When Dostoevsky said, "Pain changes you, but it teaches. That is its mercy." but Kafka said, "Pain changes nothing. It just repeats itself until you forget who you were before it started."

kafka was a Jew. jews don't do original sin.
also maybe he picked an apple because they were more broadly available? i'm not super versed in the ability to transport tropical fruits to the (landlocked) czech republic in the early 1900s, but i'd be willing to bet they would've spoiled by then and "mushy banana" just isn't quite as injurious.
also it never says it was an apple! we don't fucking know! i don't even know how christians got the whole idea of an apple, but it isn't because of textual support!
there is so much wrong with that...
great now I'm pissed at your AP English lit teacher too. this is like doing a unit on huckleberry finn without once mentioning, even in passing, that mark twain was a white dude, but finding plenty of time to discuss the significance of huckleberries.
This past year and three months have been such an awakening for Jewish people, but one with a certain flair of absurdity. It feels like un-reality, like a wicked nightmare you can't wake up from. It's like the entire world has lost its mind and when you try to tell them this isn't normal, that what they're doing is wrong, they twist reality itself to say that no it is actually normal, it is you who is wrong. They dehumanize you, treat you as a symbol of evil and disgust. It's like we all woke up a year ago no longer humans, something else, something vile, like a bug, like a... oh. oh.
