tbh if you worry about people secretly disliking or being annoyed by you despite reassurance to the contrary AND you are someone who says "no worries" or "its okay" when there are worries and it isn't okay, those two things are extremely correlated. idk enough about the human brain to claim a causal relationship but just from personal experience it is much easier to accept that other people aren't just placating you and mean what they say if you yourself stop responding to everything with platitudes you don't mean just to avoid conflict. btw the easiest way to stop doing this is not to have the awareness in the moment that's what you're doing (that will come with time and practice) but rather later when you're annoyed and justifying to yourself why they should Just Know it's not okay because of xyz subtle social cues, you have to stop yourself then. and you have to recognize that that's a deeply unfair way to treat someone. and if you aren't able, for whatever reason, to reach out to them and say "hey i know i said everything was fine but it really isn't and i would like something to change", then at the VERY LEAST you MUST be able to say "well I told them it's okay so until such time as I am ready to retract that and discuss this openly, it will have to be okay". this goes quadruple if someone's behaviour is annoying you and you're acting annoyed but when asked directly you go "haha no its fine!" like idc what cues you're using it will never be enough to counter that you directly told them that behaviour is fine with you. it is unfair and cruel to enforce boundaries you never communicated. you cannot tell people how much you love being a doormat and then get mad when they walk over you. and going back to the original point of this post, you will NEVERRR believe that others mean what they say if you never mean what you say. i know we're all just joking around but mentalities like "[throwing up blood angrier than ive ever been in my life] haha sounds good!!" are poisoning you they are ruining your relationships. conflict avoidance is so alluring but all it ever breeds is resentment. if you tell someone there's nothing to worry about, that is how they will act. and that's how they SHOULD act. if you say everything's fine when it isn't, YOU are the one in the wrong, YOU are the one who isn't communicating effectively enough, and the onus is on YOU to fix it or live with it. if you ever ever ever want to believe that people mean what they say, you have to start by meaning what YOU say.

The New York prosecution team has now filed a notice of intent to pursue the death penalty against Luigi, just one day before his scheduled appearance in federal court tomorrow and before he has even stood trial for his charges.
This is absolutely fucking revolting, unconstitutionally unjustified, and an outright perversion of justice with no regard for due process.

About 40% to 45% of eligible to vote Americans did not vote.
Less people voted now than in 2020 (~66% or eligible voters voted in 2020 compared to ~55% this year)

I would like your opinion on Rhaenyra's hubris and her portrayal as a godlike figure of authority. I am thinking of Shakespeare (King Lear) and ancient Greek tragedy. Any parallels?
I really do hope you see this analysis, anon from the past, because I squeezed my brain trying to get all this together 💚:
First of all, I think we have to make an important distinction between Shakespeare and ancient Greek tragedy. One can argue, of course, that Shakespeare's plays were influenced by certain elements of ancient Greek tragedy, but there are several differences; the kind of hero in question being a primary one. In ancient Greek tragedies such as Oedipus Rex, Antigone, or Medea, the hero is of noble birth and standing, and their hubris is a result of their own excessive pride combined with their ambitious attempt to challenge the gods and claim some godship for themselves.
Shakespeare's plays are a bit more ambiguous in classifying the hubris. The hero can be of noble birth, sure, but their flaw is in themselves and their defiance of tradition or society’s laws. God or the divine is not featured, challenged, contested, or attacked in any way by their morally ambiguous choices, or at least not to the extent that it is in ancient Greek tragedies. Hubris in Shakespeare's tragedies stems from the debilitating flaws a hero has, which prevent them from making wise, sound, and moral decisions, ultimately leading to their demise. Thus, their "fall" is a natural consequence of their own decisions, unrelated to any claim of godship, and not imposed on them as a punishment by some higher order, as would be the case in an ancient Greek tragedy.
Rhaenyra could be framed as a Shakespearean heroine (if someone has done a similar analysis, please link it below), but the fact that she assumes this godlike status and will soon defy all else for the sake of it screams more ancient Greek hubris than a flawed Shakespearean character to me.
(1) So, breaking her hubris apart, we find excessive pride in her teenage years: even if it becomes apparent that the realm will not concede to having a female ruler that easily, Rhaenyra's overconfidence in her heirdom, and her complete trust that her father's words alone are enough to guarantee her the throne, could be classified as excessive pride. Nevertheless, no one is too noble, and no one ever holds such an unshakable and undeniable claim to the Iron Throne. One must always be on the lookout, forge alliances, and marry into powerful houses, instead of solely relying on blood ties & prophecies.
(2) This display of excessive pride is intertwined with her personality: Rhaenyra flaunts her freedom and disregards courtly protocol, as seen by her choice of lovers. Underestimating the degree of damage her children's parentage can have on her claim, and believing that she can ride out scandal without consequence, is a kind of hubris, and that is why pious and religious Alicent almost screams "blasphemy!" and becomes absolutely deranged when Rhaenyra seems to be getting away with every. single. thing. while she plays by the book (10/10 scene, Driftmark is the gift that keeps on giving).
(3) Rhaenyra's overconfidence in herself or in whatever teenage and childhood bond she shared with Alicent is further feeding on her pride, as she remains so willfully blinded to the Greens' desires and Alicent's own political acumen and willpower.
(4) The peak display of excessive pride, however, has to be Rhaenyra's decision to send her two sons, Lucerys and Jacaerys, as envoys, believing that her reputation and her army of dragons alone will command her respect, safety, and control.
(5) Furthermore, Rhaenyra's hubris is evident in her claim of godship throughout the series as the true heir bearing "the blood of the dragon." Rhaenyra's bloodline is sacred, descended from old Valyria, and that should be enough to validate her claim to the throne, regardless of the massive political risk. Her bond with Syrax (explored in the books in greater detail) further confirms this claim of godship.
(6) Another example of her grasp of divine destiny is her unwavering belief in Aegon's Dream: Viserys' prophecy that she is the Targaryen destined to sit the Iron Throne to safeguard the realm from evil, a prophecy which she takes upon herself to fulfill, even though it isn't attributed to her at that moment or timeline.
(7) Lastly, the way she views Aegon II's crowning not only as a personal challenge but as a contention against fate, confirms both her excessive pride as well as her claim of godship: only Rhaenyra's bloodline can be sacred, and not Aegon's, and she alone can be the heir whose rule is divinely ordained and on whose figure prophecy is fulfilled.
Overall, I would say that Rhaenyra is very much an ancient Greek tragic heroine who displays hubris through her overreliance on her noble birth and godlike status, as well as her excessive pride, which inevitably blinds her to the shifting political winds. Just like any other ancient Greek tragic hero, Rhaenyra is plagued by her own divine ambition and reaps the consequences of her own actions. What I cannot be sure of at the moment is the divine punishment that should follow according to the ancient Greek tragedy model, since I would not categorize Rhaenyra's end as such as per the books.
The above analysis confirms -to me at least- that Rhaenyra is such a complex and well-written character worth studying, loving, and analyzing. I enjoyed writing this and will probably look for more hints of hubris in the future. If that's something you'd like to see, you're welcome to give me ideas. Take this analysis with a grain of salt, and if you don't agree with it, that's ok too.

Uh. So I see a post going around about why you shouldn't rely on ChatGPT for school stuff. And on the one hand, I agree that you should never rely on ChatGPT for maths. But on the other hand, I think there are times when "just use a darn calculator" is not enough.
Hence why I want to introduce a non-AI website/app I used a lot to help me in highschool maths class: Desmos.
You know how, in middle school to highschool, you learn about functions? Equations with multiple variables, where changing one variable will change the other? And then you can make lines on a grid with them? Desmos is specifically for stuff like that!
It's also helpful for trigonometry (sines, cosines, and tangents).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I typed in a few basic functions in the screenshots above. However, if you mess around with the different numbers in the functions, you can get an idea of how that changes things. And if you're more of a visual learner than a listen-to-lectures type, it can be an amazing learning tool. Highly recommend it.

I went to my first fiber festival this past weekend! Hoosier Hills Fiber Festival; if I'm still in this state come June next year, I'll probably be back and would love to meet anybody else there. Socializing/hanging out/talking to people without feeling like I was obstructing Real Customers was the one thing I missed, though I didn't really get to any of the free lectures so maybe that's where I could've met some people. Since it was an unknown situation with a lot of people and nearly an hour drive each way, I strategized to make sure I'd go:
First day, I signed up for a couple volunteer shifts. Absolutely a recommended strategy.
Got to be helpful!
They happened to have goodie bags, to help me justify the gas and time (I now have a nice tape measure to replace the one that's been vacationing with a missing sewing kit for a couple years and a lasercut wood two-inch gauge window that might help me with consistency versus my suboptimal practice of just trying to knit perfect squares when swatching in pattern)
I got to learn things about the layout and schedule I wouldn't know to ask when answering questions and acting as a gofer -- especially true working two different locations
And of course, some people were pretty much guaranteed to be happy to see me!
Second day, I signed up for a workshop in the morning so I'd be there and able to shop for anything I needed at the end. Ombre yarn dyeing was the class! It's acid dyes, something I'm several years off from wanting to get into enough to commit to dedicated cookware, full pots of dye powder, etc. The room with the workshop was a barn that had plenty of outlets--but they did not represent plenty of breakers. So there weren't quite enough functional heating elements for the class to have sufficiently cooked our yarn before leaving, and I did need to risk a giant stock pot at home for three batches of four jars, almost-simmering in a water bath for thirty minutes each, of the yarn that hadn't proven it was done (all but the two palest greens). I was a little worried the delay/drawn out heat situation would affect the results but if it did it wasn't much; I got pretty much exactly what I was hoping for with my two color gradient and the single is great too!
The single dye gradient is the color Moss, which did some interesting things with the red portion separating out once they were heated. Every skein has redder blotches, so I'm not bothered about any inconsistency -- if anything it'll help my finished product camouflage stains. Though it was definitely a surprise for me and the other Moss user in the class when our first yarn to have exhausted the dye was the complementary color to what it went in as.
The two color gradient used Rhodamine Red on one end, which was one end of one of our instructor's samples where she chose a cool-green for the other end to show how multi-component dyes mix less predictably than most paint. (It was kinda like shading with markers where you can still see washes of the pink and green in what you squint at and call a grey-brown.) The other end was Cantaloupe, which was one of the maybe three colors she didn't have a sample cut of yarn for. But she described it as the flesh of a perfect ripe cantaloupe and obviously I had to see that, and it sounded like it would be fairly guaranteed to combine nicely with the magenta while being just enough around a bend in the color wheel to be interesting--warm orange versus cool pink. As I said, it turned out pretty much exactly as I was picturing. Not anticipated was how much the jars looked like they were full of some delicious dragonfruit-mango beverage. Were I still a barista I'd be trying to recreate this for my shift drink.
Image descriptions under the cut.
[ID: Five images following fourteen small skeins of sock yarn dyed in individual glass jars, in two gradients. One gradient is six skeins from a medium forest green through a pale creamy pink, the other is eight skeins from a vibrant yellow orange through an even more vibrant magenta. The first photo is inside under fluorescent lights, showing the 32oz glass canning jars with metal lids and rings, full of dye and yarn on a table at the end of the class in which they were filled and heated for a short time.
The next two images are animated gifs. The first gif is two frames showing the finished dye jars sitting in grass, with their yarn and with it removed. The green gradient left only transparent blue color in its jars, and most of the pink to orange gradient's water looks more orange without its yarn, aside from the third and fourth jars from the orange end, which shade toward a neon lilac with the peachy pink yarn removed. The second gif is a view of the inside of the bright green wash bucket, with just the pink-orange yarn in it, then all of them mixed up, all as they were after a soak with the rust-brown water, in the first rinse, and that rinse water alone showing its transparent but still brown tint.
The last two photos show the gradients lined up along a weathered wooden bench on the side of a deck. The first photo has the wet piles of yarn bundled in front of each of their respective jars with remaining dye. The final photo has the clean, dry yarn wound into center-pull balls and still vibrant in the direct sunlight. End ID]

If desire should absolutely align with reason at some point then we will reason and not want, essentially because it will be impossible, really, for example, in preserving reason, to want the nonsensical and therefore knowingly to go against reason and to want to do ourselves harm. And since all desire and reason can be calculated, because at some point they will discover laws for our so-called free will, then, therefore, and this isn’t a joke, it will be possible to make up some kind of table, so that we will actually want according to this table.

Am I the only one wondering why someone would use ChatGPT as a calculator instead of using an actual calculator for a simple math problem. Like do you need to borrow one of my 8 calculators? Or maybe just use the one on Google or on the phone in your pocket. Like are we really so far gone that not only can we not do simple math in our head, but we can’t even push some buttons and need to ask ai instead…

In case anyone else was wondering, I did the math and, to reach a speed of 5000 mph by going up in a plane and jumping out or something, you would have to free fall from a height of approximately 160 miles, which is in the thermosphere (not breathable air) and doesn't leave you with enough distance to decelerate safely so it's not really a viable method. Yes I took a break from the action movie show to do physics don't worry about it
