GOG have added all the "Ultima" games to their new Preservation Program, and have also made a few updates to how they support some of the games.

Dragon Age: Origins is currently 75% off on GOG. This is the only version of the game that I recommend new players buy (and it's not bad for old players to have too). It's been optimised as part of their preservation program which means you don't need third-party patches to avoid crashes. It's also DRM free: the installer is yours to keep forever.
EDIT: sale is over. add it to your wishlist and look out for the next one.

For those interested, the GOG distribution of DAO recently got a patch addressing common resource allocation and stability issues! It's a part of their new program to preserve older games from the brink of technical obsolescence.

gamers! GOG is doing a games preservation program, which is super cool. the tldr on it is for an old game to be in that initiative, it has to work, as-is, no modding or changing needed to make it run on a modern pc. fallout new vegas is in there but i'm not sure how the changes actually work. if i installed fnv through it, would that totally eliminate the need to use viva new vegas? or would i have to use it anyway because fnv, at its core, is just that unstable even with the updates

If you're new to the Dragon Age games or if you just want to play the first game again but don't have it, good news: Dragon Age Origins - Ultimate Edition is $4.99 US on GOG. Even better, it's part of their "Good Old Game Preservation Program," which means they've put significant effort into making sure it still runs on modern PCs. I've been able to run it smoothly on my laptop as-is, and with mods as long as I'm using the 4GB patch. The game does absolutely look 15 years old, and fans are incredibly mixed on the combat, but the story and companions are worth it. And once you buy it on GOG, you own it and can save the installers. No app download, site login, or internet connection required.
The sale runs until January 3rd, but if you miss it this time out, it goes on sale pretty often!

A bunch of LEGO games just got DRM free versions! Hopefully we'll see more in the future but this is already a nice start. The lack of any harry potter crap also brings me joy, though I also still hope for a homophoba-free version of LEGO Batman 2 one day as well.

“The GOG Dreamlist is a way to tell us, ‘This game mattered to me,’ and to help us convince publishers to bring it back,” GOG said in a press release. “Your votes keep the fire burning, even when negotiations get tough—for the games that are worth the fight.”

LEGO IN THE GOG PRESERVATION PROGRAM
THIS IS NOT A DRILL
(tl;dr there are a bunch of lego games that gog themselves have committed to maintain to work in perpetuity on modern systems. this is independent of the publisher and therefore i think it is only for the gog versions. also its not just older ones like lego star wars, theyve got some newer ones like the ninjago movie one)
