I don’t know if this is just because I’ve curated my feeds to show me this, but I actually have a sliver of hope that we may stay blue because of all the kids who will be voting age in 2024 being FIRED TF UP against all the human rights violations the republicans are passing/want to pass into law and like. I don’t want the kids to save us. They shouldn’t frickin have to. But if republicans keep being such raging assholes, if they can hold onto that anger until 2024… they just frickin might. I’m genuinely terrified what will happen if they DO NOT, but I have seen so many late-teens-early-20s kids getting out and voting in local elections and doing other things* that helps that I really, really hope they bring that energy to the 2024 election even if our choices are “old white guy who is Actually Doing Okay (could be better but not Genuinely Evil)” and “Orange Incoherent Criminal” or “ Literal Fascist Wannabe Dictator that everyone else actually hates”
(Also, do I wish we had a better option than Biden? Sure. But he’s not doing nearly as bad as a lot of people INCLUDING DEMS want us to believe. Like no maybe he’s not MANY things, but what he is doing is pretty darn good and big and it’s not actual genocide so like. Can we all suck it up ONE MORE TIME PLEASE???)
(*the biggest energy I saw was with the Tennessee Three and I’m like PLEASE BRING THAT ENERGY TO THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION I AM BEGGING YOU)
I mean... like I keep saying, the Republicans aren't trying so hard to outlaw voting because they truly think their policies are popular and people legitimately want to vote for them. They have lost the popular vote in every presidential election except one (2004) since the start of this century, and yet in that time, we have still had 12 years of GOP presidents, because the Electoral College sucks anti-democratic donkey dick so hard.
Likewise, yes: if we get our act together and vote in equal or higher numbers than 2020 and 2022, we will probably-to-definitely win. A turnout of just 27% of Gen Z voters stopped the Red Wave in 2022, so if yknow, a few more of them would do so in 2024, that would be nice. Republican policies are toxically unpopular with young people, but these are often also those most susceptible to "evil Democrats/both sides bad" anti-voting propaganda, so it's not always clear how this adds up to extra points for Team Blue.
Anyway, at this point, it's still too early to know what the hell will happen between now and November 2024, how Felonies Georg's charges numbering possibly in the literal hundreds will affect the race, or any of that. As ever, however, we do know that the crazies WILL vote en masse, like they always do, and it is up to us to do our part.

DeSantis Borrows a Page from Hitler - Vows to ‘Destroy Leftists’ When Elected
Tumblr media
So, it seems Donald Trump isn't the only Republican candidate for president who spent Memorial Day vowing to crush his political enemies.  While appearing on Fox and Friends, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was asked, “Why is right now the time for Ron DeSantis to run for President?”  The Florida Governor responded by saying, “Because I will serve two terms, and I will destroy leftism in this country.”
Wait - the hateful little bigot who is currently getting his ass kicked by Mickey Mouse said what?  Now, whoa there, Miami Mussolini!  Is it just me, or does this resentful little prick have about as much broad appeal as a bowl of rotten fruit?  He should remember the rest of the country isn’t fucking Florida.  You see, unlike Ponce de Leon, Ron DeSantis isn’t interested in finding Florida’s “Fountain of Youth.”  Instead, he headed straight for the “Fountain of Hate,” and has hopes to bathe the rest of the country in its nasty waters.
I mean, what’s so concerning about a national presidential candidate basically declaring if he’s elected, he will “exterminate” the opposition?  Hell, what’s he going to do, round us all up?”  Don’t answer that!  Why can’t the guy be satisfied with boycotting Bud Light or banning rainbows in Florida?  Of course, in the interest of fair play, I’m sure our Republican friends would have no problem whatsoever if Joe Biden were to declare that after he wins the next election, his goal will be "destroy conservatism.”
Now some may ask, what’s the main difference between DeSantis and Trump?  Well, the difference is it took Trump decades to become the asshole he is today, but DeSantis took a crash course.  DeSantis is a guy so bitter and hateful that when he looks in the mirror - even his own reflection hates him.  I mean, nothing says “I will heal this fractured nation” quite like “I’m gonna destroy all of you liberal fuckers.”  Hell, Biden recently said, “There's no place for anti-Semitism in America,” and Lauren Boebert called that “an attack against conservatives."
So, perhaps GOP voters might wanna “think twice” before voting to “destroy leftism in this country” - because that would mean ending social security, medicare, decent wages, women’s rights, the five-day work week, the eight-hour day, child labor laws, any shot at affordable healthcare, environmental protections, and a host of other benefits Americans have come to rely on.  All of which are “leftist” programs.  Unfortunately, “thinking twice” has never been a top Republican voter priority.

🎆🇺🇸US Democratic informational post🇺🇸🎆
The sooner people stop listening to doomsday leftist neoliberals and realize they’re just as much of Hp huge ass grifters as the GOP; the more people will realize that those leftists are mad because eventually it’ll be President Harris and we know that the world hates a Black President.
Plus…I’d think that the past two would’ve woken up people to how much damage the GOP has and continues to do. Or are these anti laws ‘ not your problem’.
🩷Roe v Wade? Damn…all those judges Trump packed in the court and since people can’t take a moment to research how fucked we are. Other overturns have happened and it’s not just the federal SCOTUS who’s fucking around and having long term damage
🇺🇸 Other federal judges in various courts. Trump got to appoint over 200, while Biden is at nearly 200. Oh and for those who bitched about why doesn’t Feinstein step down? Yeah see, McConnell said he’d block her replacement on the judicial committee. Ya know, so the GOP with their leader McConnell playing games again.
🇺🇸Student Debt Forgiveness is up to the SCOTUS to either uphold or stay overturned. Biden never said everyone gets their debt completely forgiven. NO Biden can’t Executive Order this, because ya know, due to checks and balances.
👿 Judge Alieen Cannon. This is the judge who is going to preside over the Trump case in Florida. Will she actually recuse herself? It’s a Trump appointed judge ! You think she’s going to step down?
🌺I don’t need to mention the overturns and the state bans of abortion rights, 🏳️‍🌈 rights, 📚 bans due to the fact that Trump got to appoint judges while he was acting like a buffoon in the media. Which is why it’s always best to keep researching your local politicians because Biden isn’t a damn king ( thank fuck). Biden and Harris have democracy rules to follow.
So anything that you thought you hated about Biden, and Harris as well since she did not lock up a bunch of Black and brown people, then you might need to look at your social media algorithms because frankly, it’s likely screwed because too many can easily lie about Biden since the Main stream Media wants to be up the GOPs’ assholes.
And hell, this is coming from a former leftist who’s Twitter has a bunch of people I follow with receipts about US politics and the receipts on what Biden and Harris HAVE done even though it doesn’t seem like alot due to having such fucking chaos since 2015.
And all because too many yts were and are mad the US had a Black President and we will have one again in 2028.
Don’t listen to the these chaos agents of :
The Squad
Katie Porter
Ro Kanna
Marianne Williamson
Tuisi Gabbard
Bernie Sanders
Liz Warren
Nina Turner
Susan Sarandon
Jamie Lee Curtis
And the fuckhead Cornel West who’s pulling a Jill Stein
Receipts, that’s for another day or if you know my Twitter, there’s a bunch of likes there as well.
🎆🇺🇸And as always, I encourage research, research and more research. The GOP has their voters and they don’t research shit. And vote in your local elections 💙🩵 🇺🇸🎆

Keeping in mind the long list of assholes just thirsting for Benedict to fail:
Hunter & crew, including Ackland, Birkin, Maskill, Slater, and the rest of Hunter's circle of loser friends.
Lavender Mafia, both in Britain AND Hollywood. I posted the story of them a few weeks ago. Basically it's a mixture of both Gay and Straight movers and shakers, actors, directors, producers trying to control the destinies of anyone trying to make it in the business. They dabble in everything from sexual assault, trafficking, even murder.
Scientologists linked to UTA. They used to simply lure you in but it seems these days their m.o. is asking, then sabotaging your career until you say yes or need them badly enough. Look at the treatment Johnny Depp got from them. He left as soon as he could.
All of the groups control or have connections at certain publications, like Esquire UK, Vogue, Buzzfeed, Variety, etc. I figured out the Oscar Wilde aka Galega org is definitely a Lavender group. It's no coincidence these media keep focusing mainly on Benedict and his response to the Eukrainian crisis, a man who's had half his hard-earned money stolen, while most of the people behind all this bullshit sit on fortunes and are never called out. Conservative British media particularly have used him for years to deflect from their own wealth class not lifting a finger and in fact, being virulently anti-immigration, just as the GOP is in the U.S.
Don't buy into bullshit. Learn to look beneath the surface.

oh my god, sam, have you seen what happened on alton brown’s twitter recently? (i am writing this from the morning of november 10th, for the record) it’s just. so upsetting.
I don’t know everything about what Alton Brown did, he’s crammed a lot of activity into a very few days and my week hasn’t been tops either. My seething hatred of twitter makes it difficult for me to get context on what specifically you are referencing but I’m honestly spoiled for choice, which is as you say, very upsetting.
It looks like he made a super tone-deaf and tasteless tweet about the Holocaust that he’s now apologizing for, though still apparently bitching out people who objected, so not sure how much water that holds. I can’t even work out if he was saying the libs are going to put republicans in a camp because they’re holding a grudge or the GOP are going to put everyone in a camp because they can’t stop tunnelling up Trump’s ass, but either way it was a real asshole move.
I guess he also did something appalling in a restaurant, but I can’t find out what.
And he tweeted out a bunch of stuff about being a conservative, which I honestly thought everyone knew (apparently he thought so too). He’s been born-again since before Good Eats started, and I wasn’t nuts about it but I respected the fact that he seemed to really strongly divorce his personal views from his public persona and behaviors, which, I guess that’s now at an end.
So yeah, I’m super disappointed in the anti-Semitism and confused about the restaurant thing and didn’t realize a lot of people weren’t aware he was a conservative, I thought there was just a mass silent agreement to ignore it because he didn’t bring it into the public sphere. I think you have every right to be upset over all of those things, though.
I’m not sure AB was ever a moderate conservative but I think this kind of behavior is going to become a lot more common among people that you might think of as moderate or even not be aware were conservative at all -- we’re used to the screaming cultists being screaming cultists, but a lot of people secretly wanted another four years of GOP rule and are really psychically wounded that it’s not going to happen, even people who didn’t like Trump. It’s difficult to be confronted with reality after living in a fairy story for four years. Which is not to say I have a lot of empathy for them, because I don’t, but I’m saying this because those wounds, that confusion, is causing many more people to lash out much more frequently. It’s not right but it’s a reality. So I want to warn you to brace for this bullshit, I guess. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

The point is control
Tumblr media
Whenever we think or talk about censorship, we usually conceptualize it as certain types of speech being somehow disallowed: maybe (rarely) it's made formally illegal by the government, maybe it's banned in certain venues, maybe the FCC will fine you if you broadcast it, maybe your boss will fire you if she learns of it, maybe your friends will stop talking to you if they see what you've written, etc. etc.
This understanding engenders a lot of mostly worthless discussion precisely because it's so broad. Pedants--usually arguing in favor of banning a certain work or idea--will often argue that speech protections only apply to direct, government bans. These bans, when they exist, are fairly narrow and apply only to those rare speech acts in which other people are put in danger by speech (yelling the N-word in a crowded theater, for example). This pedantry isn't correct even within its own terms, however, because plenty of people get in trouble for making threats. The FBI has an entire entrapment program dedicated to getting mentally ill muslims and rednecks to post stuff like "Death 2 the Super bowl!!" on twitter, arresting them, and the doing a press conference about how they heroically saved the world from terrorism.
Another, more recent pedant's trend is claiming that, actually, you do have freedom of speech; you just don't have freedom from the consequences of speech. This logic is eerily dictatorial and ignores the entire purpose of speech protections. Like, even in the history's most repressive regimes, people still technically had freedom of speech but not from consequences. Those leftist kids who the nazis beheaded for speaking out against the war were, by this logic, merely being held accountable.
The two conceptualizations of censorship I described above are, 99% of the time, deployed by people who are arguing in favor of a certain act of censorship but trying to exempt themselves from the moral implications of doing so. Censorship is rad when they get to do it, but they realize such a solipsism seems kinda icky so they need to explain how, actually, they're not censoring anybody, what they're doing is an act of righteous silencing that's a totally different matter. Maybe they associate censorship with groups they don't like, such as nazis or religious zealots. Maybe they have a vague dedication toward Enlightenment principles and don't want to be regarded as incurious dullards. Most typically, they're just afraid of the axe slicing both ways, and they want to make sure that the precedent they're establishing for others will not be applied to themselves.
Anyone who engages with this honestly for more than a few minutes will realize that censorship is much more complicated, especially in regards to its informal and social dimensions. We can all agree that society simply would not function if everyone said whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. You might think your boss is a moron or your wife's dress doesn't look flattering, but you realize that such tidbits are probably best kept to yourself.
Again, this is a two-way proposition that everyone is seeking to balance. Do you really want people to verbalize every time they dislike or disagree with you? I sure as hell don't. And so, as part of a social compact, we learn to self-censor. Sometimes this is to the detriment of ourselves and our communities. Most often, however, it's just a price we have to pay in order to keep things from collapsing.
But as systems, large and small, grow increasingly more insane and untenable, so do the comportment standards of speech. The disconnect between America's reality and the image Americans have of themselves has never been more plainly obvious, and so striving for situational equanimity is no longer good enough. We can't just pretend cops aren't racist and the economy isn't run by venal retards or that the government places any value on the life of its citizens. There's too much evidence that contradicts all that, and the evidence is too omnipresent. There's too many damn internet videos, and only so many of them can be cast as Russian disinformation. So, sadly, we must abandon our old ways of communicating and embrace instead systems that are even more unstable, repressive, and insane than the ones that were previously in place.
Until very, very recently, nuance and big-picture, balanced thinking were considered signs of seriousness, if not intelligence. Such considerations were always exploited by shitheads to obfuscate things that otherwise would have seemed much less ambiguous, yes, but this fact alone does not mitigate the potential value of such an approach to understanding the world--especially since the stuff that's been offered up to replace it is, by every worthwhile metric, even worse.
So let's not pretend I'm Malcolm Gladwell or some similarly slimy asshole seeking to "both sides" a clearcut moral issue. Let's pretend I am me. Flash back to about a year ago, when there was real, widespread, and sustained support for police reform. Remember that? Seems like forever ago, man, but it was just last year... anyhow, now, remember what happened? Direct, issues-focused attempts to reform policing were knocked down. Blotted out. Instead, we were told two things: 1) we had to repeat the slogan ABOLISH THE POLICE, and 2) we had to say it was actually very good and beautiful and nonviolent and valid when rioters burned down poor neighborhoods.
Now, in a relatively healthy discourse, it might have been possible for someone to say something like "while I agree that American policing is heavily violent and racist and requires substantial reforms, I worry that taking such an absolutist point of demanding abolition and cheering on the destruction of city blocks will be a political non-starter." This statement would have been, in retrospect, 100000000% correct. But could you have said it, in any worthwhile manner? If you had said something along those lines, what would the fallout had been? Would you have lost friends? Your job? Would you have suffered something more minor, like getting yelled at, told your opinion did not matter? Would your acquaintances still now--a year later, after their political project has failed beyond all dispute--would they still defame you in "whisper networks," never quite articulating your verbal sins but nonetheless informing others that you are a dangerous and bad person because one time you tried to tell them how utterly fucking self-destructive they were being? It is undeniably clear that last year's most-elevated voices were demanding not reform but catharsis. I hope they really had fun watching those immigrant-owned bodegas burn down, because that’s it, that will forever be remembered as the most palpable and consequential aspect of their shitty, selfish movement. We ain't reforming shit. Instead, we gave everyone who's already in power a blank check to fortify that power to a degree you and I cannot fully fathom.
But, oh, these people knew what they were doing. They were good little boys and girls. They have been rewarded with near-total control of the national discourse, and they are all either too guilt-ridden or too stupid to realize how badly they played into the hands of the structures they were supposedly trying to upend.
And so left-liberalism is now controlled by people whose worldview is equal parts superficial and incoherent. This was the only possible outcome that would have let the system continue to sustain itself in light of such immense evidence of its unsustainability without resulting in reform, so that's what has happened.
But... okay, let's take a step back. Let's focus on what I wanted to talk about when I started this.
I came across a post today from a young man who claimed that his high school English department head had been removed from his position and had his tenure revoked for refusing to remove three books from classrooms. This was, of course, fallout from the ongoing debate about Critical Race Theory. Two of those books were Marjane Satropi's Persepolis and, oh boy, The Diary of Anne Frank. Fuck. Jesus christ, fuck.
Now, here's the thing... When Persepolis was named, I assumed the bannors were anti-CRT. The graphic novel does not deal with racism all that much, at least not as its discussed contemporarily, but it centers an Iranian girl protagonist and maybe that upset Republican types. But Anne Frank? I'm sorry, but the most likely censors there are liberal identiarians who believe that teaching her diary amounts to centering the suffering of a white woman instead of talking about the One Real Racism, which must always be understood in an American context. The super woke cult group Black Hammer made waves recently with their #FuckAnneFrank campaign... you'd be hard pressed to find anyone associated with the GOP taking a firm stance against the diary since, oh, about 1975 or so.
So which side was it? That doesn't matter. What matters is, I cannot find out.
Now, pro-CRT people always accuse anti-CRT people of not knowing what CRT is, and then after making such accusations they always define CRT in a way that absolutely is not what CRT is. Pro-CRTers default to "they don't want  students to read about slavery or racism." This is absolutely not true, and absolutely not what actual CRT concerns itself with. Slavery and racism have been mainstays of American history curriucla since before I was born. Even people who barely paid attention in school would admit this, if there were any more desire for honesty in our discourse.
My high school history teacher was a southern "lost causer" who took the south's side in the Civil War but nonetheless provided us with the most descriptive and unapologetic understandings of slavery's brutalities I had heard up until that point. He also unambiguously referred to the nuclear attacks on Hiroshmia and Nagasaki as "genocidal." Why? Because most people's politics are idiosyncratic, and because you cannot genuinely infer a person to believe one thing based on their opinion of another, tangentially related thing. The totality of human understanding used to be something open-minded people prided themselves on being aware of, believe it or not...
This is the problem with CRT. This is is the motivation behind the majority of people who wish to ban it. It’s not because they are necessarily racist themselves. It’s because they recognize, correctly, that the now-ascendant frames for understanding social issues boils everything down to a superficial patina that denies not only the realities of the systems they seek to upend but the very humanity of the people who exist within them. There is no humanity without depth and nuance and complexities and contradictions. When you argue otherwise, people will get mad and fight back.
And this is the most bitter irony of this idiotic debate: it was never about not wanting to teach the sinful or embarrassing parts of our history. That was a different debate, one that was settled and won long ago. It is instead an immense, embarrassing overreach on behalf of people who have bullied their way to complete dominance of their spheres of influence within media and academe assuming they could do the same to everyone else. Some of its purveyors may have convinced themselves that getting students to admit complicity in privilege will prevent police shootings, sure. But I know these people. I’ve spoken to them at length. I’ve read their work. The vast, vast majority of them aren’t that stupid. The point is to exert control. The point is to make sure they stay in charge and that nothing changes. The point is failure.

I just feel fucking sick right now. I’m trapped at work when all I want to do is go home and huddle under my covers and cry.
I am deeply ashamed to share a nationality with the people who are trying to overthrow democracy in the name of a fascist, racist, narcissistic, crybully asshole who is the fucking embodiment of the “out-of-touch elite” these braindead cultists profess to hate so much.
I used to think Trump was the cause of all this hatred and division and craziness but I’ve known better for a while now. He’s a symptom of the American disease, not the disease itself. He is the culmination of decades of racism, white supremacy, anti-intellectualism, hatred of the poor (especially if they are POC or disabled), American exceptionalism, etc. I’m happy that Biden won, but I have no hopes that we’ll see actual significant change during his presidency- not only because he’s basically a moderate Republican, but because there are still tens of millions of people who voted for Trump and the cultural rot he symbolizes. Not to mention the GOP has drifted so far right they make other countries’ conservatives look like Bernie.
I don’t even know where I’m going with this except to say I feel like a Roman citizen during the collapse of the Roman Empire. And I just wanted to say, to everyone who reads this who is a part of a disenfranchised group that these terrorists and their sympathizers view as subhuman, I see you and I support you. I pray for you and will fight for your rights until you are treated the way you deserve.

From Ron Filipkowski on Twitter.
Donald Trump gave public endorsements to the GOP primary challengers of three House members and one Senator who opposed him in the impeachment proceedings early this year.
In terms of fundraising for the Third Quarter of 2021, all four of the candidates endorsed by Trump did more poorly than the members of Congress who voted for impeachment or removal.
Trump-backed challengers to Republican lawmakers lag in fundraising
Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who is widely seen in great peril of losing her seat because of her vote to impeach Trump and her vocal criticism of the former president, raised $1.7 million during the three-month period.
Her Trump-endorsed opponent, attorney Harriet Hageman, entered the race in early September and raised about $300,000, or roughly $100,000 a week, shy of Cheney's fundraising pace.
Cheney, the highest-profile lawmaker of the 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted to impeach Trump, drew donations from a number of Wall Street executives, including Blackstone Chief Investment Officer Prakash Melwani. Hageman received a donation from billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel.
Thiel is an asshole. Nobody can be surprised by him siding with fellow asshole Donald Trump.
There is a loophole in Wyoming election law which may be of interest to Democrats in the state. According to Ballotpedia:
Wyoming law stipulates that parties conduct open primaries. While voters must be affiliated with a political party in order to participate in its primary election, any voter, regardless of previous partisan affiliation, may change his or her affiliation on the day of the primary. Primary elections in Wyoming are determined by plurality vote.
We're certain that a Republican will win in November 2022 in Wyoming. So Democrats who want to make sure that at least it’s an anti-Trump Republican who wins the US House seat can temporarily change their registration to Republican when they vote in the Wyoming primary. RINOs for Cheney could be a thing next year in the state. 😎

Trudeau promises massive covid stimulus
Tumblr media
Canadian Prime Ministers have a fun gambit: when things start to go really badly for them, they "prorogue" (suspend) Parliament, which dissolves all committees, inquiries, etc, until such time as they are ready to reconvene, with a tabula rasa.
Most egregiously, the far-right asshole and climate criminal Stephen Harper prorogued Parliament in the middle of the 2008 Great Financial Crisis in order to avoid a no-confidence vote that would have triggered new elections.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008%E2%80%932009_Canadian_parliamentary_dispute
While this DID save Harper's bacon, it also left Canada without a legislature during a global crisis that threatened the nation's entire future. It was a crazed, reckless thing to do.
Canada has a safeguard to prevent this kind of gambit: as a constitutional monarchy, Canadian parliamentary manoeuvres have to receive the Crown's blessing, in the form of assent from the Governor General, the Queen's rep to Canada.
This is the sober, apolitical adult supervision that fans of constitutional monarchies are always banging on about, and then-Governor General Michaëlle Jean completely failed to do her fucking job, leaving Canada without a Parliament during the GFC. She literally had one job.
Proroguing Parliament didn't just save Harper from a no-confidence vote: it also dissolved all the Parliamentary inquiries underway at the time, including the "Afghan detainee transfer" affair, which was investigating Canadian forces' complicity in the torture-murder of POWs.
In many ways, Trudeau is the anti-Harper: a charismatic Liberal who tells refugees they're welcome in Canada, marches with Greta Thunberg, and appoints the first-ever First Nations person to serve as Attorney General .
Truly, there is no policy so progressive that Trudeau won't endorse it...provided he doesn't actually have to make it into policy. Because many of his policies are indistinguishable from Harperism, albeit with a better haircut.
This started before he won the election, when Trudeau (whose father once declared martial law!) whipped his MPs to vote for a human-rights-denying mass surveillance bill, C-51.
Trudeau did so while insisting that the bill was a massive overreach and totally unacceptable, but claiming that the "loyal opposition" should still back it so as not to be accused of being soft on terrorism in the coming election. He promised to repeal it after.
Of course, he didn't.
Trudeau is often compared to Obama, a young and charismatic fellow who makes compromises, sure, but comes through in the clutch.
Tell that to pipeline protesters.
After the Obama administration killed the Transmountain Pipeline - the continent-spanning tube that would make filthy, planet-destroying tar sands profitable enough to bring to market - Trudeau bailed it out, spending billions of federal dollars to keep it alive.
Then, Trudeau - who campaigned on nation-to-nation truth and reconciliation with First Nations - announced that he would shove this toxic tar-sand tube through unceded treaty lands across the breadth of the naiton.
And then he had the AUDACITY to march with Greta Thunberg at the head of a climate march, demanding a change to policies that would see billions dead in the coming century.
HIS OWN policies.
I mean, Trudeau's boosters have a point - Harper NEVER could have pulled that off.
The Harper years were a Trumpian orgy of blatant self-dealing and cronyism.
The Trudeau years, on the other hand...
One of Trudeau's major donors is SNC Lavalin, a crime syndicate masquerading as a global engineering firm (think Halliburton with less morals).
SNC Lavalin had done so much crime that it was on its final notice with the Canadian legal sysem, a probation that it must not violate on penalty of real, big boy federal criminal prosecutions.
Then it did more crimes.
Remember Trudeau's historic appointment of a First Nations woman to the Attorney General's seat? Now was AG Jody Wilson-Raybould's moment to shine.
As Wilson-Raybould began aggressively pursuing these corporate criminals, she started getting calls from Trudeau's office.
For avoidance of doubt, these were not calls of support. They were demands to drop the case and let the SNC Lavalin crime syndicate get off scot-free. Eventually the PM himself called her and demanded that she give his cronies a pass on their repeated criminal actions.
Wilson-Raybould went public, decrying political meddling in the justice system. Trudeau denied everything and began to smear her (Harper had tons of scandals like this, BTW, only the counterpart was usually a rich old white guy, not a First Nations woman).
But Wilson-Raybould had recorded the conversations, and she released the recordings, and proved that Trudeau had lied about the whole thing. Trudeau fired her and kicked her out of the party.
But at least he's not Trump, right? He's the anti-Trump! (Well, except for the pipeline and that time he announced "No country would find 173 billion barrels of oil in the ground and leave them there").
Remember the Muslim Ban? As Trump was tormenting refugees at the US border, Trudeau tweeted "To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada."
Yes, that was awesome. There is no policy so progressive that Trudeau won't endorse it...provided that he never has to do anything to make it happen.
Canada and the US have a "Safe Third Country Agreement" that says that asylum-seekers turned away from the US border can't try again in Canada. To make #WelcomeToCanada more than a hashtag, Trudeau's government would have to suspend that agreement.
Instead, Trudeau's government insisted that under Trump, "the conditions of the Safe Third Country Agreement continued to be met" and thus they would not suspend the agreement and give hearings to those turned away by Trump's border guards.
But at least Trudeau handled the pandemic better than Harper handled the Great Financial Crisis.
No, really, he did!
Mostly.
I mean, unless you were in a nursing home or on a First Nations reservation.
https://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/an-emergency-season-pandemic/
But still, Trudeau's government did a MUCH better job than the Trump government, or Boris Johnson's Tories. Neither Liberals nor Conservatives will really fight cronyism, climate change or authoritarianism, but there are still substantive differences between them.
But in some ways, they are depressingly similar.
Take corruption.
Long before the plague struck, Canadaland was publishing damning reports on We Charity, a massive, beloved Canadian charitable institution nominally devoted to ending child slavery.
Canadaland's initial reporting on the charity focused on its partnerships with companies that were using child slaves to make their products, but the investigations mushroomed after the charity sent dire legal threats to the news organisation over its coverage.
And then Canadaland founder Jesse Brown found himself smeared by a US dirty-tricks organization that got its start working for GOP politicians, who got a contract to plant editorials criticizing Canadaland's We coverage in small-town US newspapers.
Private eyes started following Brown around, even keeping tabs on his small children. Rather than being intimidated, Brown kept up the pressure on We, which prompted whistleblowers to leak him even more details about the charity's activities.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/08/03/turnkey-authoritarianism/#we-charity
These included massive, mysterious real-estate holdings, hard-to-excuse criminal investigations of its Kenyan activities, and (here's where I've been going with this all along) GIANT CASH PAYMENTS to Trudeau's family, as well as valuable gifts to his Finance Minister.
And, as with the Wilson-Reybould affair, Trudeau's initial response to this was to simply deny it, calling his accusers liars. But then the scandal kept unspooling, his Finance Minister quit in disgrace, the charity (sort of) folded up and shut down, and Trudeau...
Well, Trudeau prorogued Parliament, shutting down Canada's government in the midst of a crisis that was - unimaginably - even worse than the 2008 crisis that Harper had left the nation rudderless through to avoid his own scandal.
(Again, for constitutional monarchy fans, that's two entirely political proroguings in the midsts of global crises, signed off on by the Queen's supposedly apolitical and sober check on reckless activity)
Shutting down Parliament seems to have rescued Trudeau's government from snap elections, which may well have been won by the Tories, who have resolved their longstanding racist and plutocratic tensions with a new ghoulish nightmare leader:
https://jacobinmag.com/2020/09/canada-erin-otoole-conservative-party-cpc/
And, as Trudeau has reconvened Parliament, he's promised something genuinely amazing: a massive, national stimulus package meant to keep families, workers and small businesses afloat through the looming second pandemic wave.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-canada-economy/canada-bets-the-farm-on-big-spending-as-second-wave-threatens-economic-recovery-idUSKCN26F1NF
This is something Canada - and the US, for that matter - desperately needs. Canada is monetarily sovereign: it issues its own currency and its debt is in the same currency, meaning it can never run out of money (no more than Apple could ever run out of Itunes gift cards).
The Canadian DOES face constraints on its spending, but they're just not MONETARY constraints - they're RESOURCE constraints. If the Canadian government creates money to buy the same things the private sector is shopping for, there'll be a bidding war, AKA inflation.
But as a new wave of lockdowns and mass illness looms over the country, there's going to be a hell of a lot of things the private sector isn't trying to buy - notably, the labour of the Canadian workforce, millions of whom will be locked indoors through the winter.
An analyst warns that Trudeau's proposal is likely to add CAD30B to the deficit, which is a completely irrelevant fact unless that new money is going to be chasing the same goods that Canadian business and citizens are seeking to buy.
Trudeau has promised to create a national prescription drug plan (a longstanding hole in Canada's national health care system), as well as universal childcare, and he's denounced austerity as a response to the crisis.
There's a part of me that is very glad to see this. My family and friends are in Canada, after all, and if Trudeau lives up to his promise, he will shield them from the collapse we're seeing in the USA.
But that is a BIG if. Trudeau isn't Harper. He's more charismatic, he's got better hair, and he says much, much better things than Harper.
However, when the chips are down, Trudeau out-Harpers Harper.
Mass surveillance legislation. Corruption scandals. Lying about corruption scandals. Bailing out the pipeline. "No country would find 173 billion barrels of oil in the ground and leave them there." Abandoning asylum-seekers to Trump's lawless regime.
"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action." It would be pretty naive to assume that merely because Trudeau has promised to do the right thing, that he will do the right thing.
Indeed, if history is any indicator, the best way to predict what Trudeau will do is to assume that it will be the OPPOSITE of whatever he promises.
I won't lie. I felt a spark of hope when I read Trudeau's words.
But hope is all I've got - and it's a far cry from confidence.
Or relief.

Another anti-mask shithead screws up everyone else’s week on the Hill
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has tested positive for coronavirus after refusing to wear a mask while in the Capitol.
The lawmaker was set to travel with President Donald Trump to Texas Wednesday, but his positive result was caught in the pre-screening process. Gohmert said last month that he would not wear a mask around the Capitol because he was being regularly tested for the virus.
“[I]f I get it,” he told CNN in June, “you’ll never see me without a mask.”
Gohmert, who was in attendance at Tuesday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing with Attorney General William Barr, is the seventh representative to contract the virus. He was spotted without a mask on Tuesday speaking with Barr within an arm’s length prior to the hearing. Barr will be tested today for coronavirus following Gohmert’s positive result.
Following his positive test result, Gohmert didn’t immediately isolate and self-quarantine, as health experts advise. He reportedly returned to his office, saying he wanted to inform his staffers of the test result in person rather than having them learn from news reports. Several staffers were already in the process of leaving by the time he arrived.[...]
He is one of a cluster of Republican members of Congress who have refused to wear masks, despite party leaders including Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) wearing them around the Capitol. Several Republican representatives were chastised during the Barr hearing Tuesday for not wearing masks in the hearing room.
Okay, my turn:
According to Fox News, Gohmert (who they very gingerly state “has been prone not to wear a mask around Capitol Hill “, and not the more accurate “has been prone to be a belligerent asshole when questioned on the topic”) was scheduled to be on Air Force One today with President Trump for another campaign fundraising fund.
At 66, Gohmert is inside the red-alert age bracket where the mortality rate has always been a little bit higher. He’s also a Texas Republican, a group which helped found the GOP Death Cult that has openly suggested more of us should be willing to die so that others can start making money again.
When the House Democrats proposed proxy voting in May to cut down on the infection risk among members, Gohmert’s bellicose response from the House floor was a mix of Constitutional originalism and “come on, don’t be a pussy” chest thumping, invoking (of course) the pandemic economy while doing so. So on that level, you can say that he literally asked for this.
And then there’s the Trump-led “magical thinking” wing of the party, the idea that wishing can just make all of this go away overnight. Gohmert definitely earned his stripes as an early member of that movement during a live TV interview in April where he plugged a “magic powder” he claimed was being used in Germany, one which allegedly killed the coronavirus on contact and keeps killing it for up to 14 days. You walk through a tent misted in this stuff and boom, invincibility!
There were a few problems with this story, the first being that when PolitiFact pressed Gohmert for even the most basic details about what the hell he was talking about, he didn’t answer their calls.
The second was that this “Germany” place he said it came from? Turns out it’s a real country with people who can confirm or deny bullshit fairy tales.  Dr. Jörn Wegner, a spokesman for Deutsche Krankenhausgesellschaft, or the German Hospital Association, didn’t waste words: "What your congressman said is absolute nonsense. There are no such tents and there’s no powder or magical cure." But you know how it is. Anything is possible in your imagination. Just don’t try to requisition a fantasy from a medical supply company.
In spite of all of the above, here’s hoping that Gohmert makes it through this. And here’s hoping that he gets sent home at the end of his current term so the folks back home can give him shit about what type of magic powder he was on when he came up with that yarn.
Also added to the infected column in the past week: Trump national security adviser Robert O’Brien. Trump claimed on Monday to have not seen him lately, which, all things considered, is one of the few things he’s ever said that I can believe without hesitation.

An Intervention To Save Lindsey's Soul Uphold the law Lindsey. Honor your Oath for once. Convict that Orange Traitor. Don't be a fool. Whatever Trump has on you will leak out eventually. You can bet he's run his mouth to a lot of people willing to make a quick buck. Most people think he's blackmailing you and others think you are simply a traitorous weasel. Even if you are able to weasel out of some of it, it's still gonna suck for you. You don't need the stress. You can live like royalty as a ex-pat. The press will leave you alone and the law will look more at Cruz and Hawley. The idiots at Q-Anon are still cooking up stuff and that could get ugly. They make Alex Jones look sane. You got rich serving the donor class so take the money and run. There are whole lot of countries that don't have extradition treaties with the US. If you have even a shred of moral and honor consider this. Trump sent his mob into the capitol to hang Mike Pense. Like you Lindsey, Pense faithfully licked Trump's balls for 4 years and look how Trump repaid him. You can't trust him not to turn on you like the snake that he is. When it comes to snakes, Trump is way out of your league. Is it worth your soul? Do you think you are already destined for hell? Do you think you are beyond redemption? I don't. That video of you praising Biden and that video of you telling the truth about the depravity of Trump the anti-Christ tells me there may be some good in you. Do you think something bad that you did cannot be forgiven? Do you think hell is a bunch of BS? Maybe it is but are you willing roll the dice? You are at a crossroads Lindsey and time's a wasting. Confess and amend your life. It may save your very blemished soul. Here's another thing. Most of the Republican base is going to hell for their loyalty to the Anti-Christ. Sure the GOP base dumber than dirt but they knew what Trump and Cruz are and so do you. Do you really want to spend eternity with those assholes? Do something moral, courageous and magnanimous and then get out of Dodge.
