Drama Accountability Pinned Post!

EDITED April 24, 2024: Hello! Thank you for landing here. This blog is devoted mostly to Asian drama and movie reviews and meta analyses, along with your random fashion post and maybe a floating meditation on parenting along the way. This pinned post will help me keep track of where my scattered brain is at with what I’m watching, what I want to watch, and what I have watched.

My major focus regarding dramas is in completing what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC), where I’m learning about the young history of Thai BLs through an expansive list of GMMTV and non-GMMTV dramas, to learn about the genre’s fumbles and improvements, as recommended by @absolutebl in their original post on the topic. I’m also inspired to learn about the development of Thai BL as an art form, complete with tropes, frameworks, and responsive commentaries, as described by @miscellar in an analysis post on Bad Buddy the Series. 

I’m also catching up in general with other classic and/or essential QLs of all other Asian countries, reviews of which you can check out on this tag. 

I tend to go down actor/actress rabbitholes when I’ve watched a drama of theirs that I have fallen in love with; I don’t always watch things chronologically; I LOVE SHOWS ABOUT FOOD AND/OR COCKTAILS, and I’m still new to Tumblr fandoms. End of 2024 spring season – part 2

Cherry Magic! 30 years of virginity can make you a wizard?!

Holy FUCK was this a surprise. Usually I go into BL with caution because there’s some *cough*Dakaichi*cough* real weird ones BUT. This is incredible?! No wonder people were so excited when this got announced. I loved it so much that I’m writing this review right after watching the finale.

Adachi gained a magic power on his 30th birthday; he can suddenly read the mind of anyone he touches. And that’s how he finds out, the most handsome guy at his office Kurosawa, has a crush on him!

Good lord. They’re the fucking cutest. That’s it, that’s the whole review. The most wholesome BL I’ve ever watched – and I’ve watched Sasaki and Miyano. I guess it’s nice to see fiction about actual adult gay people instead of teens.

The art isn’t my favourite but it follows the manga art style so I can’t be mad. The animation is mediocre at best but you know what, I’ve decided that’s part of the anime’s charm. Deal with it. Consensus is, if you like BL, or if you just wanna watch a cute romance story, this is for you. It’s so sweet, it’s gonna give you a toothache.

Solo leveling

I don't think I've mentioned this much on here before but I'm a big manhwa lover! I especially love webtoons but that's a whole different conversation (I'm obsessed with omniscient reader's viewpoint - currently in the process of reading the very. very long webnovel).

Humanity was caught at a precipice a decade ago when the first gates—portals linked with other dimensions that harbor monsters immune to conventional weaponry—emerged around the world. Humans called hunters are responsible for clearing the monsters inside the gates. E rank hunter Sung Jinwoo. While exploring a supposedly safe dungeon, he and his party encounter an unusual tunnel leading to a deeper area. Enticed by the prospect of treasure, the group presses forward, only to be confronted with horrors beyond their imagination.

This was incredible. My favourite anime of the season for sure. No words, just go watch it.

You try magic once and it sticks to you like glitter glue . . .When Johnny and his best friend, Alison, pass their summer holidays dabbling in magic, they never expect it to have consequences. Sure, it’d be great if they could banish bullies or change their lives for the better, and what harm could come from lighting a few candles and chanting a few spells? When they cause an earthquake that shakes Chicago to its core, they draw the attention of the Marduk Institute, an age-old organization dedicated to fostering the talents of young wizards.

Once there, Johnny and Alison are told they can never return to their previous lives, and must quickly adapt to a new world shimmering with monsters, fraternities, and cute boys like Hunter and Blake. But when they’re pulled into an epic, supernatural fight that could cost them both their lives, Johnny and Alison find strength they never knew they had as they battle for love, acceptance, and their own happy ending—all with the help of a little magic.

You can find hidden gems on Wattpad and fanfiction sites. For example, I loved A. V. Geiger's Follow Me Back when I read the duology several years ago, and my teenage years were spent crawling through The Hunger Games and Harry Potter fanfiction. Hence, I was excited to jump cannonball into a high-stakes magical fantasy book; however, I was quickly disappointed by Santoni's I'm a Gay Wizard. Trigger warnings: homophobia, bullying, kidnapping, assault

I don't know if a story can be 'too Wattpad' but this is. The magical aspects are not executed well nor are they explained at all. The pacing is inconsistent, in that some scenes are rushed through as quick, action-packed thrillers while others are snail-slow and leave a gooey residue everywhere. The romances feel cliche. However, I will give the book the benefit of the doubt since I did not read past 20%, so the instantaneous love possibly gets better. Also, the main character Johnny is unbelievably awkward and just so different from everyone else. Despite the age range for Johnny and his classmates to be 16-18-year-olds, the characters, except for possibly Johnny's best friend Allison, act like 12-year-olds, based on their limited communication skills and the number of times "freak" is used as an insult.

Moreover, there is also just a lot to unpack with the string of homophobic slurs and assaults targeted on the main characters, and I am not comfortable that no actions were taken to charge the assailants, particularly by the assaulted main characters or any of the bystanders at the busy mall where the assault takes place. This situation is not too realistic, especially as most events are recorded by observing phone cameras nowadays.

Last but certainly not least, the school that kidnaps Johnny and Allison also forbids good, tasty food. At least provide good food if you're kidnapping underage wizards! That should be common sense. From other reviews on Goodreads, this is a good story for some and not for others. I just am in the latter group, unfortunately.

Okay now it is time for the Endgame Analysis

ACTUAL SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM

No context spoilers first

Okay now we get actually deep.

1st off. There were some parts where my body was not ready. 

Like the jokes. Some of them were A-grade out of the park. 

We will forever Stan for America’s Worthy Ass, Thumbelina, Build a Bear, and the Magician of Bleecker Street. 

However, I will not stan for Hulk dabbing or Thor knowing how to play Fortnite. Since the joke happens in 2024 that means people are STILL playing Fortnite. I did at the Fortnite bit, but it was pretty low truthfully. 

Overall, the movie was GOOD. Some of it I did not expect, like the beginning or Nat’s death. I was expecting someone to die and I had no idea Tony was going to be the one to do it. No one did. I didn’t know until a certain SOMEONE said “I’m not telling you what happens cause you won’t do it.” This same someone who LOOKED DAMN FINE IN A SUIT AT THE END. STEPHEN DIDN’T OWN THE MOVIE, BUT WHAT HE DID THROUGH THIS ARC CHANGED EVERYTHING. 

He saw the timeline of success (unlike the Ancient One who was being all protective and such. I liked that she basically hinted at Stephen not becoming Sorcerer Supreme anytime soon or that his ascendance will be different because of what he did to save the ENTIRE UNIVERSE) and WAS THE ONLY GODDAMNED PERSON WHO KNEW THAT TONY WAS GOING TO DIE LIKE THAT. 

AND HE HAD TO CARRY THAT WEIGHT. LET THAT BE KNOWN. 

Also, that ONE LINE OF DIALOGUE BETWEEN WONG AND STEPHEN.

“Is this all of them?” 

“DID YOU WANT MORE?!” - make them married gdi Marvel

I did not expect the Bruce/Hulk thing. Like at all. It blew my mind. 

Letting Steve rewrite himself in the timeline where there was no Captain Rogers was a blessing and making him worthy was good to make that 4-year-old joke a reality. 

To get that dance... it brought a smile to my face. 

Also, Tony was staring at Steve’s ass. There was an LGBTQA character in the therapy session, but MARVEL. You sure you just didn’t make Tony bisexual? 

And by the laws of nature, Nebula should be dead since she killed her past self. Marvel what the heck. Yeah, I had SOME problems. 

Like how the means to get to the Endgame was to mind another method to time travel when it didn’t dawn on Tony’s mind that the stupid wizard he met knew how to time travel? 

I always go back to how time does not make sense in the Marvel universe. 

Endgame is like....the best example of that. 

Oh! Just saying.....fucking girl squad with Rescue and Valkyrie (sorry KING VALKYRIE) kicking ass is a MOOD. 

And Carol’s haircut I’m gay for that shit.
