I finally wrapped up the Triumvirate verse with a big flashy finale (and bound it, too). I started Triumvirate in 2019, which means I've spent six years on this series, and that blows my mind a little. (a lot).

Will there be more Triumvirate stories? I genuinely hope that other writers will take up the torch and write more fic for all fans of the series. I’m not sure if I’ll write any more myself. It could happen. But for now, I’m happy to let this series rest.

An Oral History of the Ewok Bikers of Endor

4,115, gen, an Uncommon Hazards fic

I pitched three story ideas to the From A Legends Point of View fic collection, and this is the concept they accepted. It takes an idea from the Uncommon Hazards series, that post-Endor, Ewoks have immigrated to Coruscant and started an illegal swoop racing industry.

As I began to write it, I realized that the fic challenge required 5k and this story wasn't much more than a 3k concept. I stretched it out to 4. I'm not sure that this story was exactly what the mods had in mind, but it was fun finding ways to bring in characters and reference different types of media.

A Smuggler’s Guide to Joining the Rebellion

14,355 words so far, gen, the sequel to The Things You Find on Tatooine.

I wanted to get this fic through all of ANH by the end of the year, but my brain didn't cooperate and I ran out of time. But Smuggler's Guide has been a fun distraction to carry through into 2025.

The Coruscant Job

3,145, gen, Fenig Nabon/Ghitsa Dogder

Who? you may ask. Why, the super obscure con artist team that appeared in three short stories in the 90s. AKA the Fenig Nabon/Ghitsa Dogder fic literally no one asked for, because no one even knows who these characters ARE. This was another idea I pitched to the FALPOV challenge, and while it wasn't selected, I wanted to write it anyway. It turns out that was a good decision, because what I wrote wouldn't have followed all of the FALPOV rules. (My idea moves their timeline forward and retcons the story “Credit for Your Thoughts.”) 

GOALS FOR 2025

Finish A Smuggler’s Guide to Joining the Rebellion (teen, Luke/Mara) The ongoing project. Progress: five chapters posted, uhhhh lots of scraps and and partial drafts in a doc.

Lando Calrissian and the Jewel of Andara (gen, Lando/Karrde, Luke/Mara) The Lando and Mara heist romcom I’ve been promising forever. Will 2025 finally be this fic's year??? at this point, I don't even know. Progress: three chapters drafted, but in need of heavy revision.

Experiments (teen? Luke/Mara) I honestly started to think this fic was dead dead, but this year I dusted off the old files and finished drafting the first two chapters. What happens next? I'm not really sure. I feel like this period/setting (Mara on Coruscant post TTT, pre Yavin) has already been well-worn by other fics recently and I don't know if there will be any interest in it. If I keep going, I'll have to come up with a outline and figure out what I want to do with the fic. Progress: two chapters drafted, but they may need to be merged into one chapter.

Sorry if I’m bothering you, but I just wanted to ask you something that was in my mind for a while, what’s your opinion about the today’s Once-ler Fandom?

I mean, the new oncelings (like me) and all the new stuff that is here, you probably think that all of this is so different in comparison with how the fandom was back in 2012!

And also… do you miss something from the fandom? :p

Something that you don’t see here anymore or not as much as it used to be?

Hiii suemooon! Today was yet another tiring work day =w= but my coworker gave me hot chocolate mix and marshmallows today as a christmas present so that was nice! I hope you're doing well too.

To compare today's onceler fandom vs 2012's onceler fandom...man I could talk forever about this haha! This is all just from my own point of view of course but I would say, yes a lot of things are different, but a lot of things are the same, too.

UHHMMM extremely long post so it's under a readmore LOL

For the differences, a lot of them are simply due to the way the internet has changed in 12 years. In 2012, most oncelings were in their early 20s, and if you were younger than 16 you were extremely rare and we would be like "WOAH?? THEY'RE 15?? I HAVE NEVER SEEN A 15 YEAR OLD ON SOCIAL MEDIA BEFORE". But today's oncelings are like, mostly teens now, I feel? I think it's because of tiktok, which didn't exist internationally until 2018, and also because of parents giving ipads to their kids at the age of 2. But yeah, to compare today to 2012 is like comparing gen z to millennials, the content and jokes were different and, due to 2012 being in the past, what was socially acceptable was different, too.

Another thing that's different is the way young people act towards characters nowadays, but let me specify some more. I really dislike the term "content" when referring to someone's personal creations because it just sounds so corporate. And I don't know how to feel when I see some new oncelings treat an old popular askblog character as if they're public property produced by some big company, instead of as an OC that someone worked really hard on. For example, Truffula Flu Camp Entre and Thneedville High AU are like "established media" to a lot of people out there now, as if they're well-known series recognizable to the masses (no, they're not). And as a result, I've seen people headcanon whatever they want on other people's OCs and ship them however they want without even knowing if the mods are okay with those ships anymore (it's better to be real careful, if you want my advice..). I've also seen new oncelings give other people's OCs to public merch-selling sites without the mods' permission, and I've even seen new oncelings try to take inactive askblog OCs as their own. Why? :( Just make your own OCs. You can do it! Hold my hand.

New oncelings don't understand what they're stepping into when they look at our old content from over a decade ago. Our personal feelings and our private friendships from those times, whether good or bad, are precious to us and I guess it's just a new phenomenon that we have to deal with now, so I don't have the answers for this yet. But I would encourage everyone to also look at new and current OCs in the fandom - which many people do, and I love to see that!! I also love seeing people making friends with each other and having fun with each other, that's what reminds me of the better days of 2012.

Another difference is the...landscape? We have tumblr DMs now and we have discord communities so a lot of things are hidden now from public view. RPs used to be public on tumblr but now we rp on discord and only people in the server can read them, and there are pros and cons to that. Also the fandom isn't dominated by only a handful of askblogs anymore. Things are WAY more balanced and evenly distributed now compared to 2012, where Swag Once-ler was the king of the fandom with 200 asks sent to him every hour and 4000 followers accumulated in just 5 months. (And I'm not dissing on Swag, I loved Swag too. I'm just stating my observations. In fact I miss him a lot ;-;)

As for what's the same...xD The excitement and passion that a lot of new oncelings have! I find that so cute. People being creative is the same, people gushing over the onceler and fandom ocs is the same, even if internet slang has changed. People being ambitious with projects is the same, even if those projects are never finished (but this is just general human nature). And PEOPLE BEING SWEET TO EACH OTHER is the same! I was nervous during 2020 since a lot of "ironic" fans joined that year but I'm happy to have seen some genuinely sweet people around in more recent years, just like there were in 2012. 😊

I also see a lot of the same movie analysis discussions each year, which makes sense since new people keep entering the fandom, haha! "The lorax movie could've been better", "the 1972 film is better", "I wish they kept biggering", "they should've expanded the factory scenes and taken out the car chase scene", "i hate the onceler's mom", "the movie's point gets muddled because too many people think his mom's to blame", "i can't believe zac efron and taylor swift didn't sing in the movie", and on and on, those never change, and I've seen these same discussions so often that I support the antithesis of each topic now, just to be a rebel. 😇 But usually I don't engage in those anymore, I just think "haha aww! they're having fun :]" and leave them be! But like, it truly reminds me of the earlier days. It's me who has changed, in this case.

And finally, "do you miss something from the fandom? Something that you don’t see here anymore or not as much as it used to be?" I mentioned Swag already, I also miss a lot of other askblogs that belonged to my friends, and most of all I miss a lot of my friends who've drifted away, and I hope they're all doing well. I had a lot of good times with friends over the years. Some of them were rp partners and I miss our rps and I miss their characters dearly, I can't think about it too hard or else I might cry. What else...I want to say that I miss the crazy nightblogging events we used to have but I don't know if I could keep up with those anymore if they happened again haha. Same with askblogs answering asks live, almost no one does that now because people want so much to make every ask pretty with a new pretty artwork. But like, even if that comes back, again I don't know if I could keep up. So I suppose everything had its place!

Things will continue to shift and change, and you never know what the future holds so it's best to just keep going. I'm still making new friends and new good memories in the fandom each year, and I'm grateful for that.

Do you have a favorite X-men comic run? 👀

HMMMM id say my all-time favourite x-men run is def Excalibur Vol. 1 (1988)! It's the perfect sweet spot of a fun, well-written story with silly parts and great character moments, and it's filled to the top with soap-opera drama that we so dearly miss in modern x-men comics. I think the team is pretty much the perfect size to give everyone room to shine, plus the art is done (for the most part) by my all-time favourite x-men artist Alan Davis who's kind enough to draw kurt in tiny shorts over and over again. truly a hero. the cast is great (kurt, kitty and rachel are all favourites of mine and i really like meggan! brian is also there) and it's just a damn good time

other than that i have terrible taste so a lot of my personal favourites are in that 2012 - 2018 dead zone where the xmen were kind of a worthless brand they were trying to kill off so they just did WHATEVER. i love wolverine and the x-men, i love all-new x-men, amazing x-men, gen x 2017, all those weird middle children that were kind of balls to the wall are really fun for me, in part because that's when i started seriously reading comics so they hold a special place in my heart, but also because i kinda prefer x-stories that aren't so grandiose and all-important and world ending, and more character focused and creative, which is why a lot of the krakoa stuff really didn't catch me.

i also (big shocker) really love everything Academy X (so New Mutants Vol 2 (2003/2004) and then New X-Men Vol 2 (2004 - 2008) and the Hellions Mini (New X-Men: Hellions) and probably some more i'm forgetting right now) though those should definitely be read with a grain of salt, and if anyone's interested i'll gladly provide content warnings because they are DEFINITELY needed.

i could go on longer bc ive read a looooot of comics in my years (i could talk for hours about the pros and cons of reading akihiro comics for example. or random solos that are really good.) but yeah these are the ones that come to mind immediately! without making the list too long lol

Desde 2018 las nuevas generaciones y incluso mi propia generación (GEN-Z) tienden a caer en esta "adicción" antes se creía que solo se veía en adultos que iban a los casinos y se gastaban todo su dinero allí dentro, ahora las empresas lograron llegar a un publico más joven y mucho más ingenuo la cual está al descubierto con tanta variedad y funciones fenomenales que les brinda juegos como Valorant, Free Fire, Fornite, etc.

Estos con su simple premisa de juegos en un campo de batalla han logrado amasar una popularidad gigante y llegar a usuarios que hacen lo imposible para tener todo lo ultimo del catalogo del juego y pasarse más horas dentro de el, tal vez probando funciones, skins, entre otros.

Sonará super trillado y de anciano, pero la digitalización en todas sus formas a hecho que el ser humano caiga en un ciclo sin fin de adicciones por videojuegos, redes sociales, etc.

La edición genética avanza a pasos agigantados. Terapias para trastornos incurables, CRISPR está redefiniendo los límites de la biotecnología y posicionándose como una herramienta clave del siglo XXI.

Según datos citados por The Economist, nueve de cada diez pacientes que necesitan un trasplante de órganos no logran obtenerlo. Además, alrededor de 240 millones de personas en el mundo padecen enfermedades genéticas raras, la mayoría sin tratamientos disponibles.

Frente a este panorama, CRISPR emerge como una esperanza concreta. Es que, con una regulación adecuada, podría ofrecer soluciones para estos y muchos otros desafíos médicos.

CRISPR: el estado del arte de la edición genética, que ya está cambiando vidas

¿Qué es CRISPR?

CRISPR (siglas en inglés de Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) es un sistema inmunológico adaptativo descubierto originalmente en bacterias, que utilizan este mecanismo para defenderse de virus invasores. A partir de este hallazgo, la herramienta CRISPR-Cas9 fue adaptada para permitir a los científicos cortar y editar secuencias específicas del ADN con una precisión sin precedentes.

Funciona como un editor molecular, capaz de corregir mutaciones dañinas o insertar variantes protectoras. En los próximos meses, comenzarán los ensayos clínicos con órganos de cerdo modificados mediante CRISPR para ser trasplantados a pacientes humanos, un hito que podría aliviar la escasez de órganos.

Una de las críticas tempranas hacia CRISPR-Cas9 apuntaba a su propensión a producir efectos no deseados, es decir, modificaciones genéticas accidentales. Para minimizar este riesgo, se han desarrollado versiones más precisas, como el “Base Editing”, que permite cambiar una sola letra del código genético sin cortar ambas cadenas de ADN.

Terapias en humanos

Uno de los hitos más importantes ocurrió en 2023, cuando la FDA aprobó el primer tratamiento basado en CRISPR: exa-cel, una terapia para la anemia falciforme y la beta-talasemia. Mediante la reactivación de un gen clave para la producción de hemoglobina fetal, la terapia ha demostrado tasas de éxito significativas, liberando a muchos pacientes de transfusiones y episodios dolorosos.

Actualmente, múltiples ensayos clínicos exploran el uso de CRISPR para tratar cánceres, distrofias musculares y trastornos oculares. También hay investigaciones que buscan potenciar el sistema inmunológico para enfrentar infecciones crónicas como el VIH.

Desafíos éticos y regulatorios

Sin embargo, la tecnología no está exenta de controversias. El caso más notorio fue el del científico chino He Jiankui, quien en 2018 editó embriones humanos para hacerlos resistentes al VIH, provocando una condena global y reavivando el debate sobre los límites éticos de la edición genética. Las modificaciones en células reproductivas, que podrían heredarse, enfrentan fuertes restricciones legales en la mayoría de los países.

La comunidad científica adopta una postura prudente: mientras la edición de células no reproductivas avanza rápidamente, la aplicación en embriones humanos permanece bajo estricta vigilancia. También persisten desafíos relacionados con la equidad en el acceso a estas terapias y los altos costos que seguramente profundizarán desigualdades.

El futuro

El estado actual de CRISPR muestra una tecnología madura, más precisa y con aplicaciones tangibles que ya están cambiando vidas. Pero su futuro no depende solo de avances técnicos. También requiere marcos éticos y normativos sólidos que permitan aprovechar todo su potencial sin sacrificar principios fundamentales.

Lo que es innegable es que CRISPR ha dejado de ser una promesa lejana. Hoy es una de las herramientas más poderosas de la biotecnología moderna, con el potencial de transformar la salud, la alimentación y la industria en las próximas décadas.

Negli ultimi anni, complice anche la pandemia, si è assistito a un processo di reinvenzione comunicativa su larga scala da parte delle grandi aziende che ha portato al centro temi sociali come uguaglianza, inclusione, sostenibilità e giustizia sociale. Ne sono conseguiti cambiamenti sia nell’organizzazione interna delle imprese, con la creazione di figure dedicate (diversity manager e sustainability manager) e programmi D&I per l’assunzione e la formazione; sia nella “facciata” esterna, con campagne pubblicitarie e di marketing incentrate su questi temi (Ft+). Per descrivere questo fenomeno, che in realtà non è nuovo, è diventato popolare il termine “woke capitalism”, coniato nel 2018 da Ross Douthat in un editoriale sul Nyt.

Unione di convenienza Il fenomeno ha generato un certo entusiasmo e c’è chi era certo che i cambiamenti fossero qui per restare, anche grazie all’ingresso nel mondo del lavoro delle giovani generazioni, soprattutto la Gen Z, molto più sensibili a queste tematiche (Guardian). Ma non sono mancate le voci contrarie e le critiche di ipocrisia. In molti hanno avvertito che quello tra le aziende e le cause sociali era un matrimonio di convenienza, per evitare campagne di boicottaggio e attirare i consumatori più sensibili, e non dettato da vere convinzioni. In effetti, negli anni non sono mancati episodi che hanno mostrato più di qualche crepa sulla facciata “woke” delle società (Nyt).

Cambia il vento Ora che il vento politico è cambiato negli Stati Uniti, i critici sembrano aver avuto ragione. Molte grandi società hanno già fatto un passo indietro: Meta, Amazon, McDonald’s e altre hanno eliminato i programmi D&I; BlackRock e le principali banche Usa si sono ritirate dalle alleanze per il clima (Guardian). Il riposizionamento delle imprese nell’abbandonare gli ideali e rimettere al centro i profitti, così repentino e diffuso, mostra che non è l’impresa che si deve occupare della società, ma i governi, scrive il manifesto citando Milton Friedman.
