As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

I discovered I can make chatgpt hallucinate tumblr memes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is hilarious and also I have just confirmed that GPT-4 does this too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bard even adds dates and user names and timelines, as well as typical usage suggestions. Its descriptions were boring and wordy so I will summarize with a timeline:
Tumblr media
I think this one was my favorite:
Tumblr media
Finding whatever you ask for, even if it doesn't exist, isn't ideal behavior for chatbots that people are using to retrieve and summarize information. It's like weaponized confirmation bias.

Like the answers, I got more of that’s ok? If not just ignore lol
1: what voices do you hear for Bart and Thad? Like for Bart, I hear kid Simba’s voice from Lion King
2: what’s Bart and thads favorite movies?
3: what’s their favorite type of genre?
4: what type of music do they listen to? For Thad I can imagine goth to heavy metal lol
oho!
1: ouff i've been asked this before but i don't really have a definitive answer sadly!! in a perfect world they'd both have the same voice but with very different cadence/timbre/vocal quality.
i think a good general vibe of what i picture for Bart is something like Rob Lowe as Sodapop in the Outsiders. he's got an earnestness i like, and i feel like Bart should have a southern accent considering he learned english in Alabama (altho the Outsiders is set in oklahoma but like i said, general vibe)
i havent found a voice that matches with how i picture Thad sadly :( although i still think Evan Rachel Wood's performance as Old Dolio in Kajillionare is closest. not in sound but the raspy gravelly quality and her flat affect.
2-3: ach.... really not sure for these ones... im pretty sure Bart canonically likes action/adventure movies but like a lot of his canon interests id say that falls under Nonspecific Teen Boy Demographic
but if you want my personal headcanons... im also not sure! havent thought about it much. i will say Bart doesn't really seem the type to sit through slow-paced dramas or meditative arthouse stuff, probably tending towards action and comedy. Thad on the other hand i could see getting WAY too pretentious about obscure films nobody has heard of
4: music!! im attached to the idea that Thad unironically enjoys almost every genre of music regardless of quality - both bc it is funny but also he has no frame of reference for whats cool or not! he finds stuff to like about everything. i think Bart probably hops genres in a similar way, but is less adventurous in his tastes lol

Some pro-AI people have been calling anti-AI people "luddites", which some anti-AI people have taken to proudly wearing as a badge of honor. Because, as they will explain, the Luddites were right to smash the looms that were automating their work, as they were defending labor and fair wages, just like anti-AI movements are doing now.
Of course, once you've made that argument, you need to either follow it to the logical conclusion of "and therefore using AI is no worse than buying a T-shirt from Walmart, because we've all accepted that textile workers losing their jobs to automation is fine if it makes clothing cheaper for the rest of us", or you need to be really, really, really sure that every stitch of clothing you're wearing was ethically sourced and made exclusively by union workers making a living wage.

I spent five years coming up with unique ways to photograph the same group of plushies to help tell a story.
You don't need AI to help you be creative, you're just being lazy and want brain chemicals without doing any of the work or respecting the people who put time and effort into it.

thank you for your work – signed, a human copywriter who lost 2 clients because they literally told me "why pay you when we can use chatgpt for free lol"
ugh, so sorry that happened to you
so many companies seem to be treating cheap imitation humans as adequate - like settling for red-flavored corn syrup instead of strawberry jam

[ID: a three color drawing (black, white, and teal) in the style of Seth’s illustrations from the Lemony Snicket series All The Wrong Questions. Five and Viktor (both about 13) are seated at the counter of a diner, talking. Luther (in his 20s), who is a patron seated next to them, looks concerned about what he is overhearing. Grace stands behind the counted holding a coffee pot and gazing into space. A missing poster for Ben is taped to the counter. In the mirror behind the counter, a reflection Diego and Patch (both 15) are visible in a booth. End ID]
i really should leave time between art posts for them to breathe and accumulate their fair share of notes, but also i need something to do while im waiting for my onions to caramelize.
In this installment: Five and Viktor meet over breakfast to discuss business, Luther is a Concerned Citizen, Diego and Patch also meet over breakfast to discuss business but in the background, and Grace is NOT a robot and this diner is NOT fully automated no sir. Also as usual Ben's face provides some ambiance, thank you Ben.

I know there are many people out there who appreciate automated menus and they really are helpful if you just need some quick account information or business hours or have anxiety when talking to a real human. I know automated menus can be very quick and very easy. But I also know that one of the big reasons more and more places are trying to switch to more automation is so they don't have to pay their workers. There's a very specific portion of the population out there who believes government office workers are free-loaders and participating in fraud, waste, and abuse of tax payer dollars, so they are excited to see government workers fired, even though the services many of them provide make the lives of everyday people remarkably better. For example, I have a very quick, very simple question regarding the return of a form I was sent in the mail. But I want this question answered by a real human who might indicate if I missed something important, as the whole reason this form was sent to me was because I missed something when I originally submitted it. I want a human to verify that I understood the instructions. A REAL, LIVE HUMAN. I feel a little bit like the portion of the population who loves the idea of firing "lazy government workers" maybe doesn't realize that firing humans means no one is there to answer a phone call when you have a simple question. It also means that human is now unemployed and they absolutely HATE people who don't have "a real job" because the unemployed are a "drain on the good tax-paying people." But if you ask these people what a "real job" is and how people are supposed to stay employed when work keeps getting overtaken by generative predictive text algorithms ("AI"), they don't have an answer, other than continuous derogatory comments about "lazy free-loaders". And the increased automation isn't even helpful. It's circular. There's no guarantee it'll give me correct information. There's going to be no accountability if it tells me incorrect information, as someone can easily change what the robot says and there would never be proof I was given incorrect information. Anyway. Maybe I'm alone in my desire to have my tax dollars go to paying real human workers who get good benefits and answer the phone when I have a question. (And yes, in the hour I've been typing this, I'm still on hold).
