Philosopher’s stone: the goal of turning base metals like iron into precious metals like gold or silver. It was also said to provide the elixir of life, which could cure any illness or bring longevity. It was considered the most pure and perfect of all substances.

Stibnite: an ore that is the primary source of antimony

Described in Basil Valentine's 1st Key (the image Fool's Gold is holding). This depicts purifying gold using melted stibnite.

Impure gold dissolves in melted stibnite. Metals besides gold are turned into sulfides and rise to the surface, while a white allow of antimony and gold sink to the bottom. Roasting this alloy causes the antimony to evaporate, leaving only the purified gold behind.
In the image of the First Key, stibnite is likened to a hungry wolf in the First Key due to how quickly stibnite dissolves (devours) metals.
In German, stibnite is called “spießglanz”, which means “spear shine” due to its shiny “spear” like crystals, thus why the First Key says “on account of his name, is subject to bellicose Mars”, as a spear is a weapon and all weapons are subject to Mars (the god of war).

This is like what is described by Nicholas Flamel, where silver is combined with mercury and antimony then distilled and cohobated (repeatedly distilling a liquid then pouring the distillate back onto the residue to extract more of the desired substance) to produce red power.

With Ovid, Jupiter and Mercury are disguised knocking on houses but not shown kindness until they meet Philemon and Baucis, an old, poor couple. They let them live while killing everyone else (the wicked), with the couple’s house being transformed into a temple.

With Goeth, Faust is building a city on land reclaimed from the sea and asks the devil Mephistopheles to move Philemon and Baucis, but Faust is horrified to see the demon burn their house down with the couple still inside. Faust then decides he needs to atone for his crime.
Philemon was a figure in a dream of Jung's, a wise old man that represented superior insight and wisdom. For Jung, Philemon symbolized the “artifax” or skilled alchemist, with the goal to purify and perfect materials (transform base materials into noble ones like gold).
On a spiritual level, the goal of the artifax is to purify and perfect the human soul, achieving enlightenment (becoming a higher/whole human being).
Over Jung’s gate he put the inscription: “Philemon’s Shrine – Faust’s Repentance”. This involved integrating the moral questions raised by with the spiritual goal of alchemy via the opposing figures of Philemon and Faust (so acknowledge necessity of confronting evil on the path to individuation, atoning for Faust’s crime, and affirming the goal represented by Philemon).
Azoth: Considered to be a universal cure or Elixir of Life that could be created by the philosopher’s stone.
It is also essential agent of transformation in alchemy.

Before I begin “Astra inclinant, non necessitant”. Meaning “the stars impel, they do not compel”. They urge us or drive us but they do not force us.
Each degree is linked to a zodiac sign and a planet as well. They hold influence on placements we have. I also believe they can show us the who. And can also influence behaviour as well. It’s never certain, but one thing for sure is that it’s important.
The degrees span from 0-29°. And 0° is always considered an embodiment of the sign it is in. 0° is the beginning. If you have a Mercury at let’s say 0° Aries. You embody the sign Aries when it concerns communication, thinking.
A placement is a sentence. We have the sign, planet, the house, aspect and the degree. The degree is just as important. Not only do degrees matter when we have a placement, it also matters between aspects.
Degrees create aspects and they also show how intense an aspect is in a person.

It takes about four years to come from Alpha-Centauri.
Light reaches us from :
61 Cygni, our first star to be measuredat a distance of fifty-three billions of miles away, in about seven years ;
Fom Sirius, the most brilliant star in the sky, fifty-eight billions of miles distant, in eight years.
A little over twenty-nine years in reaching us from Aldebaran, "the Bull's eye";
Forty-four years to come from the Pole star;
And over two hundred years to travel from Arcturus, the brightest star in the northern constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman.
Speaking of this enormous sun of space, Serviss says:
"Imagine the earth and other planets constituting the solar system removed to Arcturus and set revolving round it in orbits of the same forms and sizes as those in which they circle about the Sun. Poor Mercury! For that little planet it would indeed be a jump from the frying pan into the fire, because as it rushed toperihelion, the point of its orbit nearest the Sun, Mercury would plunge more than 2,500,000 miles beneath the surface of the giant star. Venus and the Earth would melt like snowflakes at the mouth a furnace. Even far-away Neptune would swelter in torrid heat."

Not only are the stars to be found at all distances, but they vary in size, and frequently their marvelous immensity is even more overwhelming than their distance.
Thanks to the spectroscope we not only know of what the stars are made, but we are able to discern that they revolve in orbits.
"The constellation Orion preserves throughout the ages its well-known form. Similarly the Plow shines down on us to-day as it did on the kingdom of Israel and on the plains of Troy. So that for all practical purposes we are correct in speaking of the fixed stars. And yet, scientifically speaking, we are wrong. The stars are no more fixed than are the planets. Indeed, many of the stars are moving through space with a velocity far greater than the swiftest of the planets.

For example, 61 Cygni moves at the rate of thirty miles per second; while the bright star Arcturus has been calculated to have a velocity of no less than 376 miles per second. But so distant are the stars, so deep are they sunk in the depths of space, that in the course of hundreds, even thousands of years, the casual star-gazer can detect no difference in their positions."
Our own Sun, with his system of worlds, is moving along at the rate of eleven miles per second toward the constellation of Lyra, aiming apparently for the star known as Delta-Lyrse.
The spectroscope is to show us that the stars are not all moving in the same direction. For example, the brilliant star Aldebaran is speeding away from our system at the astonishing rate of thirty miles per second. Some stars share "their proper motions with others." That is they move along at the same rate as some other neighboring star or stars.
For instance, five of the seven stars which make up the familiar constellation of the Big Dipper are moving with the same velocity and in the same direction, and it is apparent that they form one star-system, even though they are separated from one another by billions of miles.
A certain German astronomer fixed upon the constellation of Perseus as the center of the stellar universe; another of his countrymen believed he had found conclusive evidence that the stars all centered around Alcyone, the chief star of the Pleiades.
Professor Garret P. Serviss, who sees the great Milky Way driving through space, "like a flat shining raft, built up of hundreds of millions of stars our little Sun being lost among them and drawing in from, either side, and from distances of hundreds of quadrillions of miles, vast stellar organisms, of a globular shape, on which it feeds and grows, while from before it, like frightened flocks of strange winged creatures, hatched in the midst of the mysterious and boundless ether, flee the spiral nebulae, speeding madly on—on–on."
Temporary stars, as they are called, rose from a violent collision between two heavenly bodies.
The spectroscope, by analyzing the flame produced, not only showed this highly improbable, but suggested what is now universally accepted as the real solution, that two stars in their journey through space happen into a nebulous region, and thus flare up by reason of friction—a theory that is further supported by the fact that temporary stars seem, nearly always to be involved with a nebulous haze.
Many instances of temporary stars are on record, one of the earliest having been seen by Hipparchus, the famous Greek astronomer, in the year 134 B. C.
One of the most notable heavenly conflagrations took place in May, 1866, when an ordinary telescopic star suddenly blazed forth with such intensity that in a few hours it increased its brilliance nearly a thousand fold.
Careful spectroscopic study of its phenomena showed that the outburst was due to an explosion of hydrogen gas, and the incident caused no little uneasiness everywhere.
An Edinburgh astronomer, thus voicing the fear of all: "Not only would all the various forms of life on Earth be utterly destroyed, but on all the members of our solar system there would be such a change effected, that if any life existed even on the remote Neptune it would at once be completely extinguished. Probably the life that existed on the whole system of worlds that circled round this distant star must have been annihilated, and as the heat and light of this star increased so very suddenly, there could have been given but short warning to the inhabitants of these worlds."
Temporary stars only blaze up once and then die down, but there is another class, called variable stars, which are quite as remarkable, and have given astronomers even more difficult hours to account for their peculiarity.
These stars get brighter and brighter up to a certain point, then wane, only to brighten again, with a regularity that can be reckoned with the utmost accuracy.
Some go through their course in three days, others take much longer, the maximum being 600 days.

Queen live at The Summit in Houston, TX, USA - December 11, 1977

This is the legendary Houston show - legendary largely because its video was the one of the most sought-after documents of Queen for decades. Bits of footage have been seen in various documentaries dating back to 1987's "The Magic Years."
The filming (pro-shot footage that was shown on the big video screens during the concert) was the result of an agreement with the venue not only for Queen, but plenty of artists who played at the Summit during this period. The footage of Aerosmith, The Eagles, and Kiss is well-known amongst collectors, and the footage of Kiss, The Who and Bruce Springsteen has been officially released. Springsteen surprised his fans in 2010 with 1978 footage that was released in a box set. Footage of Led Zeppelin is rumoured to exist as well.
The performance is fantastic overall, although it's a bit of a rough night for Brian. After flubbing his solo in Somebody To Love and the transition from Death On Two Legs into Killer Queen, he breaks a string a minute into Liar. Roger has to improvise on his hi-hat for a short while until his guitarist gets a Red Special copy. They then play a spectacular version of the debut album gem, with an extended jam in the middle where everyone shines. Brian plays great from here onward.
Freddie, after '39: "We'd like to try out something very different right now. This is from the new album, the News Of The World. Have you got it yet? The album, that is." He feels the need to distinguish the album from the British tabloid of the same name, but it actually wouldn't matter to an audience outside of the UK. "Ok, you might just about recognize this one. This is called My Melancholy Blues."
Freddie makes a very rare reference to his recurring nodule problem which was an issue at many points in his career (but not during this great period for him). "It's a real bitch of a song. It really gets to the nodules, but we're gonna do it for you tonight. This is..." (he hesitates and chuckes to himself, probably because he's surprised at himself for even mentioning it) "a song entitled White Man." He offers a great version of the song, as his voice is in superb shape tonight.
The high quality of the recording is apparent at the end of White Man, as Roger can be heard dropping his drum sticks with the knowledge that he has a 10-15 minute break ahead. The band skip the reprise of The Prophet's Song - the only time this is known to have happened on the entire tour - as Brian jumps right into Now I'm Here after his rather unique guitar solo (which starts with him fiddling with his EBow). Perhaps this was done because of time constraints (having a limited amount of film?). At the end of Now I'm Here, Roger breaks a drum stick during his brief drum break before the final fanfare.
This show was also filmed by Bob Harris' Old Grey Whistle Test crew, along with plenty of other footage (on and off stage) from the tour, originally intended for a documentary for TV in spring 1978 that ultimately never aired.
On January 14, 1978, short clips of the regular and fast versions of We Will Rock You from the beginning of the show (overdubbed with the studio version) were seen on German TV (ZDF Kultur Rockpop), possibly a combination of the in-house feed and the Bob Harris footage.

In 1989, My Melancholy Blues from this show was released on the UK 12" "The Miracle" single, and on The Miracle CD single in the UK and Austria. Also in 1989, an edited version of the song was seen on the Rare Live video release.
In November 2009, the band posted some concert videos from the 70s on their website in conjunction with the release of their "Absolute Greatest" compilation, including The Millionaire Waltz and a non-edited My Melancholy Blues from this show. The picture was brightened for the latter. In 2011, the complete and visually unaltered My Melancholy Blues was posted on iTunes.
Some of the Bob Harris footage from Houston was first seen in the 2011 Queen documentary "Days Of Our Lives" that aired on BBC Two. Rhys Thomas, producer of that documentary, has confirmed that Houston was the only complete show filmed on the tour. He added that there are bits of Houston footage from other angles as well, often filmed from backstage, with no audio, and no complete songs. Thomas stated in 2012 that the Harris documentary and the Houston concert may be released as a package in the next couple years. Only the former has come to fruition thus far, in the form of the "American Dream" documentary in the News Of The World box set released in 2017 (also broadcast as a slightly different edit on the BBC as "Rock The World" in the same year). Much of the backstage footage in the documentary is from Houston as well, including footage of Mercury speaking about the show afterward - particularly about how he tripped and fell in his entrance for Now I'm Here, about Brian's broken string in Liar, and how audience enthusiasm is "up and down" on this tour, compared to the smaller venues of the previous tour.
An overdub in the second verse of We Are The Champions in the 2017 documentary clarifies that a 24-track master of this show does indeed exist in the Queen vaults (the drums sit differently in the mix as well) - see Chinwonder's video analysis for details.
A great picture of the crown lighting rig was taken before the concert by the head of the Queen crew, Peter "Ratty" Hince, and it can be seen on his website.

Bobby Hebb - Sunny
In the summer of 1966 the sun warmed the Earth, in part because Bobby Hebb’s compelling song, Sunny, was released that June by Phillips Records. An uplifting ode to celebration of  life and perseverance; it is one the most recorded and performed popular songs. In a 2000 interview with Jonathan Marx of Nashville Scene Hebb estimated that there was some 500 recorded versions of the song. Recorded in February ’66, it entered the Billboard Top 100 at the end of June and in late August peaked at No. 2 for three weeks. It was ranked No. 27 in the Top 100 for the year. It also hit No.3 on the Billboard R&B chart and was ranked No.17 for the year. In BMI’s Top 100 Songs of the Century it is at No.25. In this particular case century represented the period of time that BMI - Broadcast Music, Inc. had existed since the 1930s. The tally also represented those songwriters and publishers that were licensed through BMI, which has had a significant share of artists in rock and roll, blues, jazz, r&b, gospel, country, folk, latin and classical styles of music as opposed to their main competitor ASCAP which has been more focused on pop artists. The ensuing Sunny album was released in September. It topped out at No.17 on the Billboard R&B during a brief period on that chart, but appears to have not broken through the Billboard Top 200 chart. Another track from the album, A Satisfied Mind b/w Love Love Love, was released later in the fall and reached No.39 on the Hot 100 and No. 40 on R&B in Billboard. A non-album song, Love Me b/w Crazy Baby (which was on the album) was released in late ’66 and only reached No.84 on the Top 100.
About the time I graduated from David Starr Jordan Junior High School, and summer days were upon me, radio jocks started spinning Sunny, a beautifully written and performed song with such wonderful positive message. I wasn’t really considering buying 45s at the time and the song lead me to buying the album when it came out in late summer making it the tenth LP of my small, but growing collection. I enjoyed some of the songs on the album and listened to it quite a bit after I first got it, less so as I started getting more records that kept me busy listening to them. It appears that the album didn’t have big sales so it must be comparatively rare these days, although I don’t get a sense that it is collectively in big demand. Since there was no internet back then, and I didn’t know about trade magazines and such, I had always wondered about what happened to Bobby. I basically heard nothing about him after 1966. It turns out that within five years he was basically out of the recording business, but still did some performing, although on a more local basis in the locations where he lived. His song still brings me sunshine when I hear it.
One of the stranger things I’ve ever come upon is that a single of Bobby Hebb’s Sunny was released by a Japanese label in 1971 backed with Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer. As soon as I saw the track times I knew it was for real. I used to put both songs on cassette tapes and have the song lengths indelibly stuck in my brain. Don’t get me wrong, I love both those songs, but I don’t think I would ever play them back to back, let alone expect them to be on the same 45 record. Just to clarify, Sunny is an R&B/Pop song as opposed to Blue Cheer’s version of Summertime Blues, which is arguably one of, if not, the earliest heavy metal songs on radio or anywhere else.
Robert “Bobby” Von Hebb was born in Nashville, Tennessee, one of eight children. His parents were both blind, and they were musicians. Bobby started performing at the age of three when he was introduced to an audience by his nine-year old brother, who was tap dancing at the time. They were both members  of their gospel group Hebb’s Kitchen Cabinet Orchestra which included his siblings and parents. His brother Harold and he continued performing as a song-and-dance team, mostly in local nightclubs. Meanwhile Bobby learned to play guitar and other instruments. Being in Nashville meant that Hebb was also surrounded by “hillbilly music”, which is what later became known as country music. He was about 16 when, after playing on a local TV show hosted by record producer Owen Bradley, he was given an opportunity to perform with Roy Acuff’s Smoky Mountain Boys, playing the spoons among other instruments. He was one of the first African-Americans to play at The Grand Old Opry, performing regularly with the Acuff band, having played there before Charlie Pride.
A few years later he went to Chicago, drawn by the jazz scene, but drawn in by the blues. He ended up hanging out with Bo Diddley and is “said to have appeared on a Bo Diddley recording, Diddley Daddy…singing back-up or playing spoons, but there is no aural evidence of the latter”, according to the Richard Williams’ August 2010 Bobby Hebb obituary article in The Guardian.
By the next year he was in the U.S. Navy and assigned to the   seaplane tender USS Pine Island. He learned to play trumpet while in the band, the Pine Island Pirates. After his stint in the Navy he returned to Nashville where he performed in Nashville jazz and R&B nightclubs playing guitar and trumpet. Hebb recorded his first record, Night Train to Memphis. It was a song written by Owen Bradley and performed by Acuff’s Smoky Mountain Boys. Bobby gave this country song an R&B edge, even a bit of gospel, proving that the hillbilly/country and race/rhythm & blues styles were quite compatible. The song was released on Rich Records by owner/DJ John “R” Richbourg. A few years later Bobby went to New York after he had worked in some sessions with Dr. John and James Booker, where Richbourg got him a gig at Sylvia Robinson’s (nee Vanderpool) Blue Morocco Club. As Hebb put it, “I went for two weeks and stayed for two years.” Sylvia was one half of Mickey & Sylvia and after Mickey relocated to Paris she worked with Hebb for awhile as Bobby & Sylvia.
It was while Bobby Hebb was in New York that he wrote Sunny. It was not long after the death of his brother Harold which occurred outside a Nashville nightclub the day after President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. It has been claimed by some that he wrote the song as a response to the murder of his brother, perhaps to both men, but Hebb put it another way in his interview with Jonathan Marx: “Very few people know what I really meant when I said “Sunny.” The other things, yes, but who I was talking to, or what I was talking about when I said “Sunny”—that still remains a mystery because it can be taken in quite a few ways.” After being asked if it was written for his brother he said, “Everyone seems to think that, because of the love, I suppose. But the love is always there. Sunny is your disposition. You either have a sunny disposition or you have a lousy disposition. Either you’re screaming at someone and angry, or you say, ‘No, uh-uh, I’m not angry. Let’s discuss this thing in a nice and pleasant way.’ Well, that pleasant way is a sunny disposition. Instead of confusing, and building chaos, let’s make this day a nice day for everyone. Spread that type of news so that you can become a little more relaxed and not filled with chaos, because chaos can become a killer.” In a sense, it still was in reaction to the tragic death of his brother, even if not consciously. He wrote Sunny in 1964 and, according to Richard Williams’ obituary article, it is explained, “The song came to him one morning when he had just returned to his home in Harlem from an all-night music session and a bout of heavy drinking, the sight of a purple dawn being its immediate inspiration.”
Not long after Hebb started being represented by Buster Newman, who started shopping the song around to publishers, but kept getting turned down. It did finally get picked up and was first recorded by a Japanese singer, Mieko Hirota, and as an instrumental by vibraphonist Dave Pike. Hebb was finally persuaded by eventual producer Jerry Ross to record it in New York studio Bell Sounds and it was included in an eighteen song demo. The recording of it  was completed in the last moments in the session. Among those who were back up singers for the recording are names that eventually made their own marks in the music world: Melba Moore, and Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, soon to known simply as Ashford and Simpson. The album was released three months after the single and included two other Hebb-penned songs.
Sunny was Bobby’s only big hit, but it came at a very special moment. So special that he was offered the opportunity to be on the bill as The Beatles toured America. Some have said that he was the opener, but it was in fact a co-bill. At the time of the tour his song, Sunny, was ranked higher than The Beatles’ songs. Here is what he had to say about it in the interview with Jonathan Marx in 2000, “I went on the Beatles tour—but I did not open up for The Beatles. Barry and the Remains opened the show for The Beatles. Then you had The Ronettes. Then you had The Cyrcle—“Red Rubber Ball.” Then I came on, and The Beatles came on. I was the costar of that show.”
Bobby Hebb also recorded three other singles after Night Train to Memphis, one on the Rich label, and two more on a couple of other labels in the ‘60s. In addition to the three singles that charted in ’66-’67 five more unsuccessful ones were released in the U.S, through 1968, primarily on Phillips. Mercury Records released another single that didn’t chart in 1972. The album Love Games was released in 1970 on Epic Records with all songs written or co-written by Hebb. It failed to chart in any manner. In 1975 the last single Hebb released, on Laurie Records, was a disco-ized version his hit called Sunny ’76 which only reached No.94 on the Billboard R&B chart i 1976. After 35 years of non-recording Hebb issued an album on a German label in 2005.
Bobby Hebb wrote hundreds of songs, and as his recording days faded, in a large part due to alcoholism, he begun working with comedian/composer Sandy Baron on a musical that never made it to Broadway. Two of the  songs, A Natural Man (originally titled Natural Resource) and His Song Shall Be Sung, made their way to Lou Rawls after they had done some re-writes to the former one. A Natural Man was a big hit for Rawls in 1971, while His Song Shall Be Sung was the B-side to Rawls’ ’71 single Believe in Me.
Bobby had gotten married and has one daughter who, as of this writing is around 35 years old. He also had a son in the mid-fifties. After a move to the Boston area, where he played in a few clubs, Hebb’s liqueur issues were coming to a head, literally. Per Charles Goldsmith’s UPI article in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Nov. 2, 1987, Hebb said he "was drinking a quart a day, Green Chartreuse, 110 proof.” In 1978 he was arrested for shooting his wife in the shoulder, and served two years for assault. Hebb said, “it was “an accident, my wife and I are still friends,” In the ‘80s he was working a maintenance job with the state Public Works Department and, as a recovering alcoholic, was singing in a lounge in North Boston. He had stopped drinking in 1981. Eventually returning to Nashville, Bobby Hebb died while being treated for lung cancer.

Al-Kimiya (from essay: Circumambulating the Alchemical Mysterium)
Etymologies
The historical purview of what came to be called alchemy includes an undeniable current of influence stemming from Pharaonic and Hellenistic Egypt on one hand, and another stemming from ancient China, medieval India and Tibet on the other―currents that appear to have cross-fertilised before converging in Arabic alchemy, whence the term proper: al-kīmiyā. Scholars have long known that the word alchemy points to an Arabic transmission (alkīmiyā becomes Spanishalquimia, Latin alchimia, French alchimie, German Alchemie, etc.) [The Arabic definite article al- points clearly to this, yet the precise origin of the lexeme kīmiyā is far from certain. Academic consensus has generally favoured Greek sources, notably those published by Marcellin Berthelot,  suggesting an origin from the term chyma(‘that which is poured out’; ‘flows, fluid’; ‘ingot, bar’; metaphorically, ‘confused mass, aggregate, crowd’; ‘materials, constituents’), whence chymeia, ‘the art of alloying metals’) named from its supposed inventor, Chymēs. As Harris observes in his 1704 Lexicon Technicum:
Chymisty, is variously defined, but the design of this Art is to separate usefully the Purer Parts of any mix’d Body from the more Gross and Impure. It seems probably to be derived from the Greek word chymos, which signifies a Juice, or the purer Substance of a mix’d Body; though some will have it to come from cheein, to melt. It is also called the Spagyrick, Hermetick, and Pyrotechnick Art, as also by some Alchymy.
The idea of fluid essences, extracts or elixirs is clearly central to the alchemical purview, and as will be seen throughout this volume, it is also inherent to the very names for alchemy in Chinese and Indo-Tibetan traditions (Chinese dao jindan, Sanskrit rasāyana, Tibetan bcud len). In addition, the Greek etymology distinctly emphasises the idea of metallic fusibility, and the idea that metals are fundamentallyfusible entities proves central to the alchemical perception. The word ‘metal’ itself (metallon, metalleion) is homophonous with—and most likely derived from—a whole series of words indicating ‘transformation’, such as metalloiōsis, which is formed from the preposition meta– (‘between, with, after; taking a different position or state’) and the substantive alloiōsis (‘alteration’ or ‘change’).
Whether derived from chyma, chymeia, Chymēs, or chymos, the term alchemy appears to come to the Latin west from late Greek sources through the same kinds of channels that preserved Platonic and Aristotelian texts, in Arabic translation, after the fall of the Greek Academy. While the lines of historical transmission are well known, matters are not quite as simple as they first appear. Egyptologists and Sinologists have both brought forward diverging evidence that the origins of alchemy lay not in Greece but in the Ancient Near or Far East.

The Egyptian Etymology
In addition to the Greek etymology, the root kīmiyā has also been traced to the Egyptian name for Egypt, km.t (Coptic keme, kēmi), which Plutarch gives as chēmia,‘the blackest earth’ (malista melangeion).  The implications of this etymology are explored in detail elsewhere in this volume. Suffice it to say for now that a wealth of theological and cosmological significations deeply pertinent to alchemy emerge from Plutarch’s identification of the name of Egypt with not only the blackness of the soil, but also with the blackness of the pupil of the eye. On a basic, symbolic level, this coheres with the fact that the Nilotic black earth, which literally (and geographically) defined Egypt, was fertile soil—the perfect receptor of life-giving seed; in the same way, the transparent openness that forms the pupil of the eye is the perfect receptor of light.
As will be seen, these significations directly tie the early conception of alchemy to genuine Egyptian theological conceptions on one hand, and to the Greek Hermetic corpus on the other, a point that has already been articulated in some detail by Erik Iversen with regard to the Memphite cosmology of the Shabaka stone and its clear recapitulation in the Corpus Hermeticum itself.  Furthermore, as the late Algis Uždavinys makes abundantly clear, this current of alchemy cannot be divorced from the numerous morphological continuities that exist between Egyptian mortuary cult on one hand, and Homeric, Orphic, Pythagorean, Platonic and hieratic Neoplatonic traditions on the other.  And as scholars such as Peter Kingsley have shown, these morphological connections are not merely apparent: they are deeply rooted in a fine web of mutual historical and geographical interactions between the initiatic traditions not only of Egypt itself, but those of southern Italy and Sicily (whence the Pythagorean current that would retain such a strong presence in the Hermetic tradition down through the centuries, from Bolus of Mendes to the Turba Philosophorum).

The Chinese Origin of the Chem- Etymon
Joseph Needham, in the alchemical volumes of his magisterial Science and Civilisation in China, makes a very plausible case for the Greek and Arabic borrowing of the Chinese term jin (‘gold’) or jin i (‘gold juice, gold ferment’), terms explicitly linked to aurifaction, aurifiction and elixirs for perfecting bodies, all of which appears to place kīmiyā in an original context not only of Taoist metallurgical practices, but also of traditions of physical immortality (macrobiotics).  After one of the most lucid and thorough surveys of the existing etymological evidence for alchemy, Needham, concludes:
If some have found an influence of jin (kiem) on chēmeia (chimeia, chymeia) difficult to accept, there has been less desire to question its influence on al-kīmiyā. No Arabic etymologist ever produced a plausible derivation of the word from Semitic roots, and there is the further point that both jin i and kīmiyā could and did mean an actual substance or elixir as well as the art of making elixirs, while chēmeia does not seem to have been used as a concrete noun of that kind. We are left with the possibility that the name of the Chinese ‘gold art’, crystallised in the syllable jin(kiem), spread over the length and breadth of the Old World, evoking first the Greek terms for chemistry and then, indirectly or directly, the Arabic one.
Needham makes it saliently clear that alchemy is not simply a product of Hellenistic culture. Although it is difficult to accept an exclusively Chinese origin for alchemy, the copious evidence adduced by Needham and his collaborators over four large volumes irrevocably transforms (and complicates) the overall picture of the genesis of alchemy. In short, not only must one come to terms with the Ancient Near Eastern influence upon Hellenistic and Islamicate alchemical traditions, one must also contend with the Ancient Far Eastern influences upon the intellectual and technical history of alchemy. This is especially pertinent given the attested lines of cultural exchange between the Asian, European and African landmasses along the Silk Road, which were established during the Han Dynasty (206 bce – 220 ce).
The most important Chinese term for alchemy was jindan, or ‘golden elixir’, which was conceived in both an external sense (as a macrobiogen) and an internal sense (as a spiritual embryo).  Jindan also referred especially to cinnabar, the red salt of sulphur and mercury, and the raw ingredient from which mercury was refined. As such, cinnabar points to one of the most ancient and pervasive mineral theophanies of the world’s alchemical traditions: the marriage of mineral sulphur and metallic mercury to form a red crystalline stone (mercuric sulphide). Around this naturally occurring substance, multiple layers of historical, cultural and mythological meaning would accrue not only in Chinese and Indo-Tibetan but also in Islamicate and European alchemical traditions.
With regard to our previous remarks on metal as a quintessentially fluid substance, it may also be added here that in ancient Chinese cosmology, metal (for which jin was also a generic term) was regarded as one of the five elements (wu xing); not only was it regarded as the ‘mother’ of the water element, the metal element itself was defined precisely by its double capacity to melt and to solidify into new form (as in a mould). This ability to revert from a solid form to an amorphous or liquid state, and back again, is a very important principle. In the western alchemical canon it would inhere in the formula: solve et coagula, ‘dissolve and coagulate’, a formula that possesses deep symbolic value in regards to ontologies of ‘flux’ and ‘permanence’ (pointing to a more paradoxical ontology embracing both ‘permanence in flux’ and ‘flux in permanence’). It also underscores the universal value almost unanimously given to mercury as the ‘essence’ of metals. For next to gold and cinnabar, mercury figures as the most universal of all alchemical substances in eastern and western traditions alike. When alchemically refined, moreover, it came to be regarded less as a ‘substance’ per se, as more as the underlying principle of pure sublimity—of absolute volatility—with the unique power to penetrate and transform all things, especially minerals and metals (the most dense things).

Yesterday T. J. Leonard received judgment against John Breckner, in the county court, for $100, for damages received from a dog bite.
The Colorado made another rise yesterday, and, from the color of the water, it was coming down from the neighborhood of the Red Fork.
The new building for Washington steam fire engine company No. 1, is nearing completion. It will be a handsome and convenient structure..
Yesterday the grand jury ordered Mary Preston (col.) released from the county jail, where she has been confined for several weeks charged with grand larceny.
If all the streets in Austin, and more especially the Avenue and Pecan, were to be graveled as the lower part of the Avenue now is, it would prove of infinite good during the winter months. Why can’t it be done?
The game of base ball which was played yesterday afternoon on the graded school grounds, between the high school club and the club from Prof. Bickler’s school, resulted in favor of the high school. Score-nine to eleven.
BADLY CUT
Last night about 10 o’clock Ed Sheehan struck Tom Bruckman, the young man who keeps the lunch stand at the Union depot, in the face with a stone. According to Mr. Bruckman’s statement, a number of men during train time stand around his lunch counter and occasionally help themselves to fruit or anything else from the counter that they see fit to take.  
Sheehan has been among this number, and some time ago he and Bruckman quarreled about the matter, but nothing more was thought of it until last night about 10 o’clock, when Bruckman, who was standing on the corner of Fourth and Lavaca streets, was approached by Sheehan and struck in the face with a heavy stone, which cut a large hole through the cheek and knocked out several teeth. Sheehan then threw again, this time striking Bruckman on the same side of the head, cutting another gash higher up and close to the ear.
Bruckman ran down the railroad to where Officer Follwell was standing, and informed him of the occurrence. The officer found Sheehan shortly afterward and arrested him. Bruckman went and armed himself after notifying the officer, and started out to look for Sheehan, and he was also arrested by Officer Follwell for carrying a pistol.
THE FIRST GERMAN. GOOD MUSIC, MERRY DANCING AND A GOOD TIME GENERALLY
The Austin German club, inaugurated the season of 1886-87, last evening in fine style at Washington fire company’s hall. To delightful music, furnished by Prof. Herzog’s orchestra, the company danced with feet that knew no weariness. Some of the boys donned their claw-hammer coast for the first time, but they were scarcely more than bashful at first and that even wore off and they appeared as easy and graceful as, and really more good looking than, their more inured rivals.
A few of the gentler fair made their debut in costumes en train, which they handled with a grace that practice alone can produce. The company was further graced and honored by the presence of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Daniel, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Drake, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner Ruggles, Mr. Geo. A. Brush and Miss Laura Brush. Among those who took part in the dancing were Miss Sallie Sea right, who glided over the floor arrayed in a rich costume of pink surah silk en train, beaded tulle front and ribbon streamers, basque, cut decollate, with lace. She was accompanied by Mr. David Harrell.
Miss Carothers wore a magnificent suit of ashes of rose satin, with train of pink embossed plush; pink ribbons and point applique lace. Accompanied by Mr. Will Anderson.
Miss Pope led the german with Mr. Morris. She was dressed in light blue satin, lace front and silk brocade sash.
Miss Eva Saylor (escorted by Mr. Jeff Brown) wore pink satin with Oriental lace; sleeveless basque.
Miss Adele Steiner wore a petticoat of blue crepe, with basque and demitrain of crimson brocaded silk. Irish point lace. She was accompanied by Mr. Geo. Mc Carty.
Miss Maggie Bowers, was becoming, arrayed in white French nainsook, Swiss flouncing and embroidery with pink ribbon. Escorted by Mr. Peyton Brown.
Miss Alice Denton and Mr. Weeks. Miss Denton wore pink Bengaline, Oriental lace and pink ribbons.
Mrs. Ruggles wore a train dress of muil with Oriental lace trimming.
Miss Ellen Sneed wore a suit of blue, with Oriental lace basque and overskirt. Escorted by Mr. Shepard.
Mr. Armstrong was happy in the company of Miss Derle Smith; she was dressed in white silk and duchess lace with ruby ornaments.
Miss Bessie Smith looked a duchess, in a costume of cardinal crepe du chene, Oriental lace and diamonds. Mr. Patrick being the fortunate escort.
Miss Howard wore white cashmere with Oriental lace, and corsage bouquet of poppies. She was accompanied by Mr. Williams.
Miss Tullie Folts (escorted by Mr. Childers) wore blue satin and beaded lace, and was pretty as a picture.
Miss Lily Bremond was escorted by Dr. Steiner. She wore white crepe du chene with valenclenes lace and flouncings, diamond ornaments.
Miss Boardman wore cream satin entrain, hand embroidered front with oriental lace. Escorted by Mr. Maxey.
Miss Miller was becomingly dressed in a pretty costume of pearl brocaded silk with valenclenes lace. Accompanied by Mr. Parker.
The first german was in every way a great success, and the season bids fair to be one of the brightest ever spent in Austin society circles.
