Sienna Laurent didn’t believe in luck.

Not after what life had done with hers.

It was somewhere between the sound of tires screaming into Turn 8 and the crowd roaring in Silverstone that she finally understood what her sister meant when she said, “The fastest way to fall in love is to stand still while the world rushes around you.”

And standing still was the only thing she could do as Lando Norris climbed out of the McLaren, helmet off, curls damp with sweat, and eyes searching like he’d been looking for her for a thousand years.

He didn’t know her yet.

Not really.

But fate didn’t seem to care about timelines.

The first time they met was not glamorous.

Sienna had been working in the McLaren comms team for two months. Just a junior. A ghost in black and papaya. She’d written her thesis on "Neuroscience and Reflex Patterns in Elite Drivers" , the kind of topic that got her hired for coffee runs and strategic data blurbs no one read.

Lando didn’t notice her the first four times she stood behind his race engineer.

But the fifth time?

It was pouring in Hungary. Track slick like glass. Lando’s car had skidded into the gravel during FP2, and he stormed back into the garage, frustrated, soaking, electric with adrenaline.

And that’s when she handed him a towel. Nothing special. Just a reflex.

But he paused.

Looked at her.

“Thanks,” he said, voice thick with rain and tension.

His eyes flickered over her badge.

My biggest screwup because of ADD!

I discontinued my study in electrical and computer system engineering in Monash University, Clayton campuse under a scholarship by government-linked company. I buried my dream to become an engineer making it as my biggest regret in life. Because of that, I got severe depression and anxiety disorder which impacted even my physical. Due to the panic attack during an electronic lab, a general physician referred me to a health and well-being centre for psychologist appointment. I received several sessions until I left Melbourne for good.

However, at that time, I am not aware about ADD and the referral letter by the GP only stated possible problems of anxiety disorder. Afterwards, I did one session with a psychologist in training and it makes me very uncomfortable as there are evaluator sit in the corner observing us. I knew that the evaluator were there to assess my psychologist but I felt like I am being judged too. I was in for anxiety and they put one of the thing that can induce panic for people like me. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Really inappropriate. So, I didn’t come to the next session. I feel guilty for that psychologist and I should have written an email explaining it. Its not her, its the evaluator. That happened in my second year of college.

In my third year, my mental health became worse. After severe depression that make me skipping class and staying at home for 2 weeks, I decided to take some action. I barely ate and spent most of my time crying. The worst part it, I faked my smile and my story every evening while having dinner with my housemates so that they do not know about my depression episode. It’s something that they will never understand and I am tired listening to bad advices everytime like ‘you shoud cheer up’ or ‘don’t think too much about it’. Seriously, if I can do that, I wouldn’t have a depression, right?

So after two weeks of mental breakdown, I forced myself to go to the health and well-being centre and make new appointment with a psychologist. Thankfully this time, I had such a great psychologist! She helped me a lot and until today, I still heed some of her advice. The best part is that, finally there is someone listen to my stories, complains and rumbling talks without judging or disrupting me. I can finally speak out my mind! Indirectly, she taught me how to be a great listener.

However, during those sessions, we only talked about that and my depression. Mostly, I focused on my problematic situations with my ex-best friend as we were having bad crisis at that time. I barely talks about my study. Well, I got panic attack during academic session so I kinda try to avoid that topic. I told her that I had a severe depression episode and proceeds telling her why it happens. Those sessions allow me to think more clearly of my current predicament and make what I think the best decision at that time - discontinue my study.

Now, if I look back at my decision, with a new awareness of ADD, I might do it differently. You see, because of my inability to focus on things that I have no interest in, I had difficulty in studying since at that time, I certainly lost most of my interest of my subjects in ecse especially electronic. I can’t focus in my class and for certain subject no matter how much effort I put in, I just can’t understand it. I always skip classes of subjects that I don’t like. I procrastinated a lot! I also spent most of my time watching movie or drama or just doing anything that doesn’t involve deep thinking. I had trouble falling asleep and had difficulty in waking up every morning which made me missed all classes that start at 8. I daydream a lot too that make me pretty much untouched with reality sometimes, maybe most of the time. The problems seem endless! Last night, I read my blog around that year and in my writing, clearly I had problems of ADD. I just don’t know about it at that time. Ignorance is certainly not a bliss for me! If only I knew about it sooner and able to go for therapy, maybe I can still complete my degree, even if its in another course.

The panic attack actually happened when I look at a circuit board. Electrical engineer that afraid of a circuit board is like a doctor that afraid of blood. It doesn’t make sense. So, I need to change my course if I want to continue my study. There is another thing that I am unaware of at that time: my sponsor flexibility in changing courses as long as its within the same school, engineering. In my contract, its stated that the scholarship is for electrical engineering. However, I can change it with a permission from my sponsor. It is possible to do so and my sponsor always lenient with us.

But I am so scared to talk to them about changing courses and even talk about my mental health. I assumed that they will never allow me to change courses and extend my study. I was so wrong and I regrets it so much! One of my friend actually extended his study up to 7 years, instead of 4 years. There are also some of scholars that change their course during their study. Urgh! I blamed myself so much for this, for my inability to speak up. All my life, I rarely make any request even as simple as asking my mom to cook what I want to eat. Often times, it was my mom that pick a signal of my desire and try to fulfill it. For instance, when I paid more attention to certain clothes when we go for shopping, she will asked me if I want it and urged me to bought it (using her money). It feel guilty every time I make a request as I feel like I burdening them. And I am scared of rejection.

It’s no use to cry over a spilled milk. There is nothing I can do now. I redeemed some of my dignity (towards myself) by getting a master degree. My path now seems better than before and I think I am better as a researcher than as an engineer. I accept that reality but that regret still haunts me sometimes, taunting me to fall into depression again. But I have a bigger problem now!

I am scared that past tragedy repeated itself again. 😭

Vicious Book Review

Vicious Book Review by V.E. Schwab (featuring  a pumpkin since it’s Halloween season)

    As mostly a fanatic of YA literature, I don’t often delve into the world of adult fiction and fantasy, however, every once in a while, I fall off the beaten path and find myself reading something different and more  “mature”. In this case, the book just so happened to be Vicious by V.E. Schwab.

I’ve never read her before, but I’ve heard amazing and prolific things about this author and her books, and especially her ties to comic books and the dramatization of writing. So, let’s get started. 

    This book was good. It was intriguing on a deeper level that I can admit that not all YA books can reach, despite their best attempts. The whole book revolves around best friends and frenemies Victor Vale and Eli Cardale which I will call him For Ever (book joke, sorry, not sorry) that start off as college roomies and then quickly dissolve into antagonistic rivals after Eli’s thesis of creating human beings with ExtraOrdinary superhuman abilities or EO’s for short takes a wrong turn after both Eli and Victor become EO’s themselves. 

    The catch? In order to become an EO and gain these special abilities, you need to die. 

And then come back to life. 

In the book, they call this a NDE-a near death experience. This was actually the most disturbing, but the most interesting part of the book to me, other than Eli and Victor’s complex relationship. In one attempt, Victor overdoses on alcohol and pills. This fails and he gets upset that he didn’t succeed in dying.

In other attempts, Eli freezes himself in a bathtub of ice and trusts Victor to bring him back to life with a series of epinephrine shots. In Victor's second attempt he has a friend electrocute him over and over again using the electrical engineering equipment at their college, which ironically results in her death instead of his. 

  These scenes were brutal to read, but also...fascinating. Harking back to Nietzche’s quote: "If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you". This saying could not be any more analogous for a book like Vicious. 

    As the characters become entrenched in this dying and resurrection process in order to gain powers, they realize that while now Eli can heal himself with impressive and incredible regenerative properties and Victor can inflict and rescind pain from himself and from others, they now lack something intrinsically and inherently human.

They now lack empathy, understanding, the concepts of guilt, shame, connection, or love amongst other things. Multiple times throughout the novel, both Eli, Victor, and other characters notice a distinct lack of something missing, something inside of them having been broken. 

    Eli uses this to set off on a mission that he has deemed been personally given to him by God to eradicate the remaining EO’s first in the city of Merit and then in other cities as he is the only different EO while the others are wrong and alien and evil and therefore must die. Eli is largely successful with this mission until Victor and his sidekicks, Mitchell Turner, fellow inmate, and Sydney Clarke, fellow EO, return to society and plan to track him down and end him. 

    The rest of the story is a series of intermixing layers of different timelines, perspectives, and time shifts that go back in time as far as ten years ago while Victor and Eli are in college to explain the origins as far up to 20 minutes before the showdown in order to build suspense about what is to come and who will come out the Victor (get it?). 

    While I really enjoyed this story and I found the premise intriguing, I also found the addition of Sydney and Serena Clarke as largely unwelcome as really the heart of the story revolves around Victor and Eli’s friendship turned sour and now focused on vengeance. I understand that a lot of what both Eli and Victor plan and accomplish could not have been possible without the sisters, but the interjection of their perspectives was not always welcome to me. 

In addition, at first I enjoyed Schwab’s time shift between ten years previously up to two hours before the event, but eventually I grew tired of the constant back and forth and I just wanted all the puzzle pieces to fall into a nice, linear path. I don’t doubt that it was creative and impressive to write, but as a reader it did get increasingly aggravating. 

    Lastly, while some of the topics in here were deep, they were also...skimmed over? I really felt like the nature of this book was to really analyze the vicious nature of both Eli and Victor and their subsequent ascent and descent into being more and less human after their differentiating near death experiences.

I would have liked to see them more introspective about who they had become, if they were still human, and the overall take on human nature in general-the old age question of what makes us human or monster, but I felt like it was just kind of...said and then left. Moved on from. Like I will move on from this review now. 

Recommendation: This novel was interesting and unique, and while Eli and Victor were engaging characters, I wanted more from them about who they believed they were, their friendship turned hatred, and the forthcoming take on what makes a human being a human being. As Schwab put it: “Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.”

Yining Shi on Approaching Technology Creatively, Accessible Tech and Educational Tools

This week we spoke to Yining Shi, one of our main instructors for the Bots & Machine Learning program taking place this July in Berlin. In this interview, Yining reflects on her trajectory, the importance of educational tools, <a hotpot interlude> and what we can expect this summer. 

Tell us a bit about yourself Yining, what brought you to where you are now?

Well, I did my undergrad in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and my Masters at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, where I mostly focus on creative coding and machine learning. I like building tools to craft a better learning experience for people. I like solving complicated engineering problems to enable creative outputs. I also like the idea of making complex concepts and technology more approachable for beginners. Currently, I’m an adjunct professor at NYU where I teach a class called Machine Learning for the Web. I also work at Sourcemap as a senior software engineer.

Where are you currently based?

In Brooklyn, New York City.

I see some of your works are based on data, physical computing, and fabrication. What are some of the overarching themes in your work? What intrigues you?

Even though these projects use different technology, they are mostly based on the idea of visualizing data to express ourselves in a creative way. What intrigues me is exploring millions of different media to express our ideas. I’m always curious about new technologies and new experiences.

For example, Friendship.am is an expression of my digital persona that visualizes 10,000 of my messages. Every circle represents one message, and they are arranged around a clock. The size of each circle depends on the length of the message. I also color-coded keywords in every message. For example, ‘What are you doing?’ is blue, and ‘haha’ is green. This was an abstract visual portrait of my digital communication habits and by looking at what messages I sent, when I sent them, and how they change over time, I got a lot of insights about my digital persona that I was previously unaware of. And so I also became very interested in personal data and how can I make them more meaningful in people’s everyday lives.

In Friendship.am, each circle represents one messages arranged around the clock by the time it was sent.

Puppy lamp is another example. It’s a playful experience that allows friends to express themselves in a new way. It is a digital interaction designed to work with a physical object. People can use the app to send color and text message to their friends and light up their friends’ Puppy Lamp. It is a way to express feelings to your friends with colors, lights and environmental ambience.

Can you tell us a bit more about p5.playground, and your interest in building educational tools?

p5.playground is my thesis at ITP, NYU. It’s an interactive programming tool for designers and beginners to understand drawing functions in p5.js.

It has two modes, live coding mode (when you change the code, the sketch will be updated in real time) and the playground code, when you manipulate the shapes on the canvas like you do in photoshop or illustrator, the code will be automatically updated.

If you move and resize the shapes on the canvas, the code that generates the shapes will be automatically updated.

I remember at the first class of Intro to Computational Media(ICM) at ITP, we learned how to use Processing to draw shapes. I noticed that some people who were new to programming found it hard to draw complex shapes with code. After talking to them, I realized that it was because people might have difficulty understanding the coordinate systems: where is the origin, x,y axis.

p5 playground tries to use this WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) interface to reinforce a cognitive link between the code and the shapes on the canvas. Now, p5.playground is used as a learning tool in the ICM class at ITP to help students understand how to draw shapes with code.

I love building educational tools because I really like the idea of making complicated concepts and technology more approachable to everyone who is interested in learning it. Not everyone needs to become an engineer when they grow up, but if anyone who wants to learn about a kind of technology should be able to learn it easily without any struggle.

Technology is everywhere in our life, and problem-solving skills are important to us. I want to make the learning experience a little easier for people, especially students who don’t have access to a lot of educational resource. I also enjoy the moments when people have told me that the tool is helpful to them or they made some projects using this tool. That’s the biggest reward moment for me.

You are currently teaching Machine Learning for the Web at NYU, what are the topics which you most enjoy teaching?

Machine Learning for the Web is a class about using ml5.js and tensorflow.js to create interactive web applications. It starts with running pre-trained models and re-training models in the browser using high-level APIs from ml5.js, as well as explore the Layer APIs from TensorFlow.js to create models from scratch using custom data.

I really like teaching week 3: Build your own CNN model with tf.js. We start with using a pre-trained DoodleNet model to classify 345 doodle classes, and use transfer learning to customize our own classes, then we use tensorflow.js’s layer API to build our own model and train it in the browser. I also like teaching Style transfer and Pix2pix.

Now, a more human-oriented question! What is your all time favourite meal?

It has to be Sichuan chinese food. My favorite is a kind of dish called hotpot. This is the hotpot my mom made.

How do you express yourself creatively through code?

Most of my recent projects have been all about using Machine Learning models to make some creative and interactive applications in the browsers.

Style transfer with ml5 is an interactive demo of style transfer, where it can recast the content of one image in the style of another image. people can either use the webcam, or upload an image, and choose a style from the artwork, and it will generate a new image with the style they chose. Pix2pix Edges2Pikachu is an interactive drawing tool that automatically colors your Pikachu drawings in real time. It’s built with tensorflow.js. You can play with the live demo here.

KNN Image Classifier with ml5 is a an interactive demo that can recognize customized classes through webcam. For example, it can recognize rock, paper and scissors from your webcam.

Machine learning can be a classic example of a topic that sounds intimidating, but the ease with which beginners could do complex pattern matching and gesture recognition projects with this board demonstrated the effect accessibility has over learning.

I’m not dead

Well, I’ve been away for a long time now, haven’t I?

I finished my bachelor thesis and now am only waiting for my mark and certificate. So, good news there :) 

I also got a great job. The reason I’ve been so quite lately. My job is very demanding and the hours are something I need to get used to (7 am to 5 pm and sometimes longer if there is a lot of work). And I didn’t really have the time to do anything to post either, but I’m kind of getting used to everything so I’m going to be more active from now on (hopefully). 

I’m currently preparing for nanowrimo and I’m planning to start a new study project. Just because I’m not at university anymore doesn’t mean I need to stop learning.
