Today is World Hunger Day, which falls on May 28th of each year. This day was launched in 2011 by The Hunger Project to raise awareness about the global hunger crisis and encourage sustainable efforts to eradicate hunger.

This day is an opportunity to participate in hunger-fighting efforts, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness through social media. It also highlights the importance of improving maternal nutrition as a fundamental step to breaking the cycle of malnutrition that has been passed down through generations.

This is a very important day for Gaza, where hunger and severe malnutrition are omnipresent among its children. My children are among those who see a full stomach as an unattainable dream, experiencing nothing but fear, hunger, and deprivation of their most basic rights. They need your support to live a life like your children's, a life every child deserves. Don't say you can't do anything, but do what you can do here. Interact and donate to my children who have suffered from malnutrition due to the hunger that has not left them since the beginning of the war because of the high prices. Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Willem Van Gogh fue un pintor neerlandés nacido en Zundert en marzo de 1853, fue uno de los principales exponentes del post impresionismo.

 Era hijo de un austero y humilde pastor protestante llamado Theodorus y de su mujer llamada Anna Cornelia. Fue el mayor de 5 hermanos.

Durante su infancia acudió a la escuela de manera irregular pues sus padres lo enviaron a diferentes internados, dejando los estudios de manera definitiva a la edad de 15 años. Sobre su infancia Vincent comentaba “Mi juventud fue triste, fría y estéril”.

Desde muy joven mostró un carácter difícil y un temperamento fuerte, a la edad de 16 años comenzó a trabajar en una importante compañía internacional de comercio de arte de la que su tío Vincent fue socio, y cuatro años más tarde fue enviado a Londres para suministrar obras de arte, y en donde se enamora de la hija de la señora del lugar en donde se hospedó, siendo rechazado por estar comprometida.

En mayo de 1875 fue destinado a París en donde creció su amor por el arte. En 1878 fue despedido de la galería pues anteponía sus gustos personales sobre las ventas que debía realizar.

En mayo de 1877 se traslado a Amsterdam donde quiso hacerse teólogo, en donde fue rechazado por no saber latín ni griego. Pero debido a su profundo fervor fue enviado de misionero a la región de Mons, a las minas de Borinage en Bélgica realizando 22 meses de trabajo evangelizador en condiciones de extrema pobreza, después sus superiores lo enviaron a Cuesmes viviendo un año en absoluta pobreza y en contacto con mineros por quienes sentía una gran simpatía.

En 1880, por recomendación de su hermano Theo quien lo apoyaba económicamente, se inscribió en la Academia de las Bellas artes en Bruselas en donde estudió dibujo y perspectiva. Por esas fechas se hizo amigo del pintor neerlandés Anthon Van Rappard, con quien mas tarde debido a las críticas a sus pinturas rompería su amistad, debido a la sensibilidad y carácter de Van Gogh a la crítica.

Para 1886 y con el apoyo de su hermano Theo, Vincent se mudó a París, instalándose en Montmartre en donde entró en contacto con artistas de la época como Émile Bernard, Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro y Paul Cézanne entre otros, es ahi en donde comienza a utilizar los colores complementarios pintando paisajes urbanos y naturaleza muertas con colores más vivos.

En 1888, derivado de los consejos de su hermano y motivado por su interés en el color y por la captación de la naturaleza, Vincent fue inducido a trasladarse a Arlés en la soleada Provenza en donde su obra fue cada día representando sus estados de ánimo y sus propios sentimientos. Ese mismo año, el pintor Paul Gauguin se instaló junto con Vincent en la denominada “casa amarilla” en donde debido al temperamento mutuo, en el transcurso de una discusión Van Gogh llegó a atacar a Gauguin con una navaja de afeitar. Arrepentido por ese arranque y para expiar su culpa se hizo cortar el lóbulo de su oreja, haciéndola llegar a Gauguin quien lejos de perdonarlo, ya lo juzgaba como un loco peligroso.

Tras la marcha de Gauguin, Theo lo hizo ingresar en el hospital de Arles, y en mayo de 1889 ante el temor de perder su capacidad de trabajar, pidió voluntariamente se ingresado en el hospital psiquiátrico de Saint-Rémy-de-Provence donde permaneció un año.

Derivado por sus sentimientos de culpa debido a su dependencia de su hermano, y sintiéndose un fracaso como artista, Vincent cayó en una profunda depresión. En julio de 1890 muere de un disparo en el pecho sin haber cumplido los 37 años de edad y sin saberse a ciencia cierta si se trató de un suicidio o de un accidente. Su legado de más de 800 cuadros, dibujos y aguafuertes reflejan tanto sus periodos mas oscuros como los de su mayor esplendor.

La calidad de su obra fue reconocida sólo después de su muerte, en una exposición retrospectiva en 1890, y en donde actualmente es considerado como uno de los grandes maestros de la historia de la pintura.
