My Top Ships of 2022 Countdown

10. Timmy and Zeta (Love Island USA) - Okay yes, this is a real-life couple, but the point of dating shows is to ship real-life couples, and Timmy and Zeta are the best. They both came into the show with the right balance of self-awareness and optimism, and they were by FAR the most mature and likable people on the show.

9. Aaron and Bobby (Bros) - Definitely the rom-com couple of 2022! Aaron is cute, but Billy Eichner’s Bobby is definitely the reason I ship this couple so much. He’s a gifted comedian and actor, and it’s really cool to see the perpetually sarcastic Eichner playing a little earnest in this movie. The ship itself is well-developed and I particularly love their P-Town moments.

8. Aloy and Kotallo (Horizon: Forbidden West) - This is the first of several crack ships on this list. Aloy is the protagonist in the Open-world RPG Horizon: Forbidden West and Kotallo is one of her companions. I love Aloy from the first game and she continues to be awesome in the second. Kotallo’s voice acting is deep and commanding (but not loud) and he’s a great blend of competent and tortured (like a cross between Rowan from Throne of Glass and Hunt Athalar from Crescent City) and I found many great fanfics to feed my interest in them together! Full disclosure, there’s no indication of romance between the two in the game and a lot of people speculate that Aloy may be queer or asexual.

7. Rhaenyra and Alicent (HotD) - I’m sure I don’t need to expand on this too much given that House of the Dragon is a worldwide sensation. Needless to say, I think Olivia Cooke is incredible as older Alicent in the show, and there’s something incredibly tragic about the love they had for each other (platonic or romantic) being destroyed by the men around them. I do read a romantic undertone in their relationship, but I don’t know that either of them realizes it themselves.

6. Bruce and Selina (The Batman) - The Batman was probably my favorite movie of 2022 and I loved the chemistry between Selina and Bruce. I’m glad that she’s more than a love interest for him - she has a real role in the story - and there’s something pretty lovely about how she teases Bruce because he’s so awkward. It makes sense that Bruce would be awkward in romantic interactions! He’s not a stud! He’s a traumatized man who has devoted all of his time to destroying crime in Gotham, of course he doesn’t know how to flirt! But it’s just even more endearing and a cool, (relatively) un-explored take on Batman.

5. Draco and Hermione (Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Falling in Love — among others) - It would be difficult for me to not include my OTP on this list. Not just because they’re my OTP, but also because the Dramione fanfic economy is incredible! New works are published and updated everyday, many of which are better quality than a lot of published novels. Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Falling in Love was my absolute favorite - incredibly well-written, with a believable and multilayered interpretation of both Draco and Hermione’s characterization. Unfortunately the slow burn is agonizing, and the fluffy part of me wishes there was more time in the story where they’re truly together, but it’s a great story. 4. Janine and Gregory (Abbott Elementary) - Janine and Gregory are like those two friends you have that would be perfect for each other and who deserve to be a lot happier than they are. Obviously the show has to keep up a will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic— it’s practically a requirement of sitcoms like Abbott Elementary thanks to Jim and Pam from The Office — but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating to watch them dance around each other! I love the characters, the actors, and the show, and I won’t be surprised if I eventually rank them among my favorite TV sitcom couples.

3. Lidia and Ruhn (House of Sky and Breath) - HOSAB came out at the beginning of the year and so I almost forgot about this great new ship! Their couple name (NightBright) is fire, their circumstances are beautifully tragic, and Lydia is especially a fascinating new character in the series. Ruhn was already a fan-fave, so SJM probably knew she needed to DELIVER for his ship. Their relationship is particularly aesthetic and ethereal, and the cliffhanger at the end of HOSB is so incredibly heart wrenching, maybe more so than any other couple SJM has ever written. by @sncinder - INCREDIBLE

2. Leighton and Alicia (Sex Lives of College Girls) - So this might technically be more of a 2021 ship, but things DID happen for them in 2022 AND I only watched season one this year. Leighton is one of the best characters on the show and following her journey of understanding privilege through season 1 feels pretty realistic, as does her hesitance to come out of the closet and it’s affect on her relationship with Alicia, whom she loves. In Season 2 she does come out and has a whirlwind semester, only to realize in the end that she doesn’t want to be in a sorority or date someone who is close-minded and rude (RIP Leighton and Tatum). She and Alicia reunite and even in just those last two episodes she seems SO MUCH HAPPIER. I love them.

1. Hannah and Fox (Hook, Line, and Sinker) - My number 1 for 2022 really just couldn’t be anything but Hannah and Fox. It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey was lovely, such a great read, especially because Piper feels a lot more fleshed out than many female romantic leads. That being said, it’s Hannah and Fox’s love story (a sequel to Piper and Brendan’s) that truly blew me out of the water. Fox’s grappling with the expectations of the people around him and the way he’s constantly over sexualized by everyone around him is heartbreaking. People expected him to be a player and so he played into their expectations because it felt better than being rejected for trying to have something real. Hannah and Fox are so completely lovely, and their ending is perfect. It’s refreshing to read a het romance where the woman is ultimately the one who feels more self-assured about who they are and the one who is positioned to do the big romantic gesture, even if she doesn’t see it as such.

Alongside her, Mulder has slipped into his investigator skin, all of his senses heightened as they search for William. It’s been so long since they played these roles that she’s nervous they’ve forgotten how. She hasn’t felt this way since the days before William’s birth when it seemed as if a threat to her unborn child lurked around every corner. But after William was born—completely normal, although no less miraculous—the shadowy forces retreated.

She taught at Quantico for a few years before leaving the Bureau altogether to practice medicine full-time. Mulder refused to grovel to Kersh for his old job after getting fired, and instead became an adjunct professor of criminal psychology, a role that left him with enough time to research the occasional cryptid. Thanks to skillful diplomacy on Skinner’s behalf, the X-Files remained open with Doggett and Reyes at the helm and Mulder and Scully serving as unofficial consultants. They’ve been living a normal life for the past 22 years. Scully didn’t expect the darkness to find them once again.

She hasn’t had a chance to bring it up to Mulder yet, but she’s terrified that someone from their past has come back to target William. She’s already berating herself for letting her guard down and failing to properly warn her son.

During William’s childhood, she and Mulder tried to straddle the line between caution and paranoia. They didn’t want their son to grow up in fear and, after several years of nothing nefarious happening, it felt easier to relax. By the time he went away to college, their worries weren’t any more extreme than any other loving parents’ concerns. When he announced that he’d been accepted into CERN’s internship program, they never questioned his safety living abroad.

It helped that he’d be going with Hannah. William claims they’re only friends, but he doesn’t talk about any of his other friends as often or with as much admiration. When Hannah came to visit them over the summer, Scully noticed how she and William could communicate with just a glance or a gesture across the dinner table. It was as if an electric charge passed between the two of them and anyone who came close enough could feel the buzz. Mulder insists to her that they must be dating but if their friendship does grow into something more, Scully knows it will have to happen on its own time.

When they reach Bellona’s office, Mulder knocks on the door and starts turning the knob before hearing an answer.

Bellona, a pale man who looks like he’s in his early 60s with dark sideburns and a balding crown, rises from his desk chair as the three of them enter the room. His office is small and drab with cinderblock walls and a small window. There's a laptop on his desk alongside messy piles of papers.

“Are you Dr. Bellona?” Mulder asks.

“Yes,” he says. “Can I help you?”

“I’m Fox Mulder and this is my wife Dr. Dana Scully. Our son, William Mulder, is missing and I believe you might have something to do with that.”

Bellona tilts his head at them but his eyes don’t give anything away. “I’m sorry to hear about your son. But I can assure you I have nothing to do with whatever might have happened to him.”

“You were the last person to see him,” Hannah chimes in. “You called him in last night to assist with a collider run.”

When a former colleague of mine from Kolkata, came to work at CERN, his mother smuggled some bael seeds into his luggage when she learned they didn’t grow in Switzerland. Once his research stint was over, the tree had gotten too big to bring back to India so he entrusted it to me.”

“So it’s likely the only one of its kind around here, right?” Mulder continues.

“I’d imagine there aren’t many. It’s a tree that typically prefers a more tropical climate, but this one is stubborn and seems to tolerate my space heater and the occasional sunlight that filters in.”

“That’s strange, though,” Hannah says, “because we found some very similar leaves around the Shiva statue on campus. I remember noticing them because they looked out of place. Any idea how they could have gotten there?”

Scully’s impressed by Hannah’s questioning. She’s giving enough for Bellona to know they’re on to him without showing all their cards. It’s a technique she used on cases before and it worked more than a handful of times.

But Bellona doesn’t bite. “No reason I can think of. Anything else I can help you folks with?”

Scully wishes she still had her badge and gun. As an FBI agent, she had the power to make people talk. Now she feels helpless. Glancing over at Mulder, she sees his gaze locked on Bellona. They both know this man is responsible for their son’s disappearance but they don’t have the authority to detain him. Instead, they have to accept his lies and leave his office empty-handed.

Without any other leads to go on, they decide to let Hannah get some rest. They walk back to the apartment with her to pick up their luggage, and then leave to go check into their hotel and try looking into Bellona’s background.

Scully finally lets herself break down when they make it to their room. Sitting at the foot of the bed, she rests her head in her hands and starts to cry.

“Oh, Scully,” Mulder says gently, coming to sit next to her and taking her into his arms. “It’s going to be okay. We’re going to find him.”

“You don’t know that,” she says between sobs. “We don’t know what happened.”

Mulder rubs her back and she tucks the crown of her head under his chin. No matter what calamity they find themselves in, she always feels safe in his embrace.

“What if this is our fault?” she asks. “What if someone is trying to get to us through him?”

“Why now after so many years?”

She shrugs against his chest and he kisses the top of her head.

“We’re going to find him,” he repeats. “I promise.”

His words shouldn’t soothe her, but they do. Mulder promised she wouldn’t die of cancer and that their son would be born safe and healthy. He makes these vows based on nothing but the power of his beliefs and he hasn’t been wrong yet. This is the man who went to Antarctica to save her life. If William is out there, she trusts the two of them will do everything they can to find him.

“I did some more research on the bael tree on the ride over here,” he says. “Offering bael leaves to Shiva in worship is traditionally considered very auspicious. The three-pronged leaf represents Shiva’s three functions—creation, preservation, and destruction. So it makes sense that Bellona would be scattering them around the statue”

The leaf is still in Scully’s jacket pocket from when Hannah handed it over to her near the statue. She leans away from Mulder to retrieve it, tracing its edges with her fingers.

“But why would he lie about it?” She asks. “There’s nothing wrong with making a religious offering."

“I don’t think that’s all he’s hiding, Scully. He knows what happened last night and I have a feeling it has to do with whatever he was doing by that statue. I think William saw something he wasn’t supposed to see.”

“By that logic, wouldn’t it mean,” Scully hesitates. “That Bellona would try to get rid of William?”

“We can’t think like that. There’s no evidence he’s been hurt in any way.”

There’s no body. She knows that’s what he means. She’s thinking the same thing. The old statistics on missing persons race through her mind. The more time goes by, the less likely they are to find him alive. She leans into Mulder’s chest and lets him wrap his arms around her again.

“What’s our next move?” she asks, her words muffled against his shirt. “Should we involve local law enforcement? Even if we were still with the FBI, we’d have no jurisdiction here.”

“I want to find out more about Bellona. He’s obviously lying. But I want to know why.” She can feel his larynx moving against her forehead as he speaks, and she can hear the wheels of his mind turning.

Her phone vibrates in her pocket, startling her. Mulder lets her go so she can answer. Hannah’s name is on the screen. They’d exchanged numbers before parting ways at the apartment.

“Hannah?”

“Dana,” Hannah’s strained voice utters on the other end. Scully can tell in the short time they’ve been apart she hadn’t gotten any rest. “I think I found something.”

“What did you find?” She asks. Mulder gives her a concerned look. “Wait, Hannah, I’m putting you on speaker so William’s dad can hear you, too.”

“Okay, so,” Hannah continues, “I started Googling Bellona and apparently he had a wife, a Dr. Samita Shah, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances thirty years ago. She was a physicist, too, and she was working at a military lab in the U.S. in 1993 when she suddenly went missing.”

“Did they ever find her?” Scully asks, her voice full of desperation.

“It doesn’t look like it. It seems that she was presumed dead,” Hananh says. “Oh god, what if he did the same thing to her that he did to William?”

“Where was the lab?” Mulder asks.

“Um, it was out on Long Island. In Montauk.”

Mulder twitches with alertness, like a bloodhound who’s caught a whiff of its prey. “Camp Hero?” he asks. Scully’s never heard of the place.

“Yeah,” says Hannah. “How did you know?”

“Hannah, Scully and I are going to go back and ask Dr. Bellona some more questions. We’ll call you as soon as we’re done.”

“No,” the voice on the other end says. “I’m coming with you.”

They agree to pick her up before returning to Bellona’s office and Scully hangs up the phone. “What’s Camp Hero, Mulder?”

“Come on,” he says, standing up from the bed. “I’ll explain on the way.”

Okay so 👀 what is the “What The Fuck Hannah” WIP?

YEAH this one was actually from 2020 and I resurrected it AND posted it a couple days ago.

It's an X-Files fic about Mulder and Scully being internet rivals... told from the perspective of a Fanlore article written 30 years after the fact lol. It plays a bit with html/css, so it looks better on desktop, but it should also be mobile friendly!

Introduction:

This AU seems to follow the initial RWBY storyline, but immediately steers off course because I’ll be trying to smash DSMP discourse and RWBY logic together.

While most of the settings and scenarios are the same, there won’t be any direct parallel counterparts for characters roles.

The names of the schools and most of the locations remain the same, with some differences such as the kingdoms:

one of the three tulle-salvatore children to grace the earth with beauty and that salvatore essences. she's a siphoner, and is deeply afraid to become a heretic due to the ripper gene from her father, not that it's an 100% chance she'll get the gene but she's hyperaware of the possibility. and that's quite terrifying the idea of losing oneself to bloodlust.

she had such a charmed life with her family. but in her teenage years she fell victim to anorexia, not from a fault of her own rather she would forget to eat - bypass eating for doing whatever hobby was on her mind at the time.

she went to rehab twice before it rubbed off on her, she learned techniques and time management skills to really assist in her everyday life. mainly that of a timer on her phone when to eat. and to listen to her own body.

danny has come leaps and bounds from then to now, almost a completely different young woman. she's gone through her healing journey and emerged from the other end.

tragically the old bird died last year leaving danny to be the head librarian due to being the only one with enough experience compared to the other trainees.

from time to time she sells or gives away her painting which is always pastel in colour, show that even darkness can be seen in the brightest of places. a beautiful contrast. it is a rarety when she does paint but many buyers come forward.

she journals every day, usually, it becomes a delusion poem rather then just the run of the mill how her day went. obviously gets that from her father's side.

but just like her mother she has a passion for fashion even if it is a little out-dated or not even in date to begin with.

always will her coffee order be some sort of strong tea if it is in the wee morning hours, usually something herbal in the afternoon. and always will it be black if milk isn't required by the tea instructions.

first ever ship: Hmm... I don't actually know. Mostly likely Mudler & Scully, watching X-Files growing up, shipping them and not even knowing thats what it was 😂

last song: Weirdly enough, my Spotify just shuffled Hannah's 3 songs from But I'm A Cheerleader! one right after the other. But the one currently playing is 'One Step At A Time'

last movie: Had to really think about this because I don't know! haha Feel like I haven't watched a film in ages!! Oh! I kinda of watched Fantastic Mr. Fox with Ted at the weekend whilst we did puzzles haha

currently reading: Reading loads of fic, as always. But I have started The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo like 4 times this year. I should set myself a goal to actually finish it before the end of the year!

currently watching: Watched all of season 4 of Sex Education yesterday. Think I have 1 or 2 episodes left of the newest season of Virgin River to watch. I seem to always be watching All Creatures Great & Small on a loop. And if it counts, I fall asleep to Bob's Burgers every night haha

currently consuming: Always drinking orange & peach flavoured water. Not long ago ate a cinnamon roll

currently craving: Nothing because I just ate and actually feel kind of sick. But yesterday all day I was craving Ritz crackers with sour cream & chive spread on top 🤤
