✨ a film for every year of my life ✨ | A Room With a View (1985) dir. James Ivory
He's the sort who can't know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a woman is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at, like a painting or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He doesn't want you to be real, and to think and to live. He doesn't love you. But I love you. I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms.

A Room with a View (1986). Lucy Honeychurch shares a brief romance with George Emerson in Florence. Yet as she tries to move on with her life and look for marriage elsewhere, can she truly forget the events of that summer?
A who's who of British period drama stars brought to brilliant, sensual, lush life by the wonderful, James Ivory. This just pulses with romance, not just between the couple in love, but in the script (tenderly written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala) and the scenery and the platonic relationships too. Just total magic, from start to finish. 8/10.

RIP actor Julian Sands (65). "Room with a View" (1985) is must-see cinema.
Richard Robbins' soundtrack was heavily influenced by Italian opera.

James Ivorys prächtige E. M. Forster-Verfilmung A Room with a View dient jetzt auch als später Gedenkfilm für den inzwischen auch amtlich verstorbenen Julian Sands, der mit überdurchschnittlich vielen fragwürdigen Frisuren in allerlei interessanten Filmen auftauchte (zuletzt -etwas beiläufig hier, und mindestes einen schluckt die Zensur immer, Mike Figgis' Loss of s..... Innocence hier).

Rosemary Leach, Daniel Day-Lewis, Simon Callow, Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves in A Room With a View (James Ivory, 1985) Cast: Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Julian Sands, Denholm Elliott, Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Daniel Day-Lewis, Rosemary Leach, Rupert Graves. Screenplay: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, based on a novel by E.M. Forster. Cinematography: Tony Pierce-Roberts. Production design: Brian Ackland Snow, Gianni Quaranta. Film editing: Humphrey Dixon. Music: Richard Robbins.
James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant had a collaboration that began with the formation of Merchant Ivory Productions in 1961 and lasted until Merchant's death in 2005. It usually included the screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. The trio developed a reputation for literary adaptations that were beautifully filmed with opulent sets and costumes and a gallery of celebrated stars -- most of them British. But the trouble with developing a distinctive style is that you can become a cliché: "Merchant Ivory" eventually became a label for a film that was tastefully middlebrow -- well-done and entertaining but just a tad safe. It's a pity, because their best films -- Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), and this one -- set a high standard, despite their "safeness." Few films have a better sense of place and time than A Room With a View in its depiction of Florence at the start of the 20th century. Granted, it leans a bit too heavily on the cliché about stuffy Brits losing their cool in the warmer climate of Tuscany, but that's the fault of E.M. Forster's novel -- not one of his major works -- and not of Jhabvala's Oscar-winning screenplay. Oscars also went to the art direction team and to costumers Jenny Beavan and John Bright, and it was nominated for best picture, for the supporting performances of Denholm Elliott and Maggie Smith, for Ivory's direction, and for Tony Pierce-Roberts's cinematography. The cast includes Helena Bonham Carter (in her "corset-roles" period) and Julian Sands, along with a then little-known Daniel Day-Lewis. Proof that Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors of all time is no longer needed, but it's worth contemplating that he created the character of the prissy Cecil Vyse in this film within a year of appearing as the gay street punk Johnny in My Beautiful Laundrette (Stephen Frears), and that he would follow with the sexy Tomas in The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Philip Kaufman, 1988), the paralyzed Christy Brown in My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989), and the dashing Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans (Michael Mann, 1992). Day-Lewis's Cecil Vyse verges on a caricature of the sexually repressed Brit, but he has an affecting moment near the end when, after Lucy (Bonham Carter) breaks off their engagement, he emerges as a vulnerable, three-dimensional character. Richard Robbins's fine score is memorably supplemented by Kiri Te Kanawa's recordings of two Puccini arias: "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicchi and "Chi il bel sogno di Doretta" from La Rondine.

Pride 2024 - Day 27
Tumblr media
Movie: Maurice
Made in: 1987 – Set in: 1909 – 1913
Starring: James Wilby, Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves, Ben Kingsley, Mark Tandy, Denholm Elliott, Helena Michell, Billie Whitelaw, Judy Parfitt, Phoebe Nicholls
Rated R for: brief language, nudity (buns and willy)
Based on the book by E.M. Forster, it follows Maurice Hall as he enters Cambridge and befriends fellow student, Clive Durham. Their friendship soon blooms into love, but the scrutiny against homosexuality keeps the two from going too far in their relationship. After the arrest of a fellow student for homosexuality, Clive ends their romance and marries a young girl named Anne while still trying to keep a friendship with Maurice.
It’s a character driven romantic drama that shows the hardships of being homosexual during the early 1900s and showcases two types of people: one who values happiness and love over reputation and security and the other who is willing to ignore his true self to keep his place in society.
Spoilers under Keep Reading Line
No one dies in the end and Maurice and Alec get together.
I liked this movie pretty well, even more so with Maurice and Alec getting together in the end. I half expected it to end unhappy just going by the time it is set and when it was made, but was happy to see that didn’t happen. I can understand why Clive breaks up with Maurice, as it’s really easy to lose everything if someone saw them together. But it was clear he wasn’t completely happy in his marriage with Anne but it was his choice to marry her, so I guess he just had to lay in the bed he made. Maurice didn’t seem to even really consider what would happen if they were caught as he didn’t try all that hard to hide it. I think he was a better fit for Alec and though I would have liked to see what they did with their life after getting together, I like the ending with Clive. It really shows a moment of him wondering what could have been and perhaps feeling regret that he wasn’t able to take that chance with Maurice. It was a little dickish that he invited Maurice to his wedding, though. I had only seen Rupert Graves in newer things so it was a bit of a surprise to see him so young and baby-faced XD
Mom’s Thoughts: This film could be considered a historical, since it takes place during the early twentieth century (most of it takes place around 1910-1913). At the time being a homosexual was illegal and one could be arrested, flogged and sent to prison to do hard labor for even a minor thing as a man kissing another man on the mouth. Clive learns this happens to one of his former classmates and is scared to continue a love relationship with Maurice telling him they will now be platonic friends. Clive goes on to marry Anne and live as a heterosexual. Maurice is heartbroken but finds a new partner with Alec Scudder, the gamekeeper at Clive’s country estate. It’s an interesting story that has no real violence and no one is killed during the movie. The movie ends with Maurice still with Alec. I wouldn’t mind watching it again sometime.

Merchant-Ivory’s lush adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel of romantic struggle against Edwardian repression is the best possible version of those PBS dramas your mom likes to watch—better, even, because this one has full frontal male nudity.
Starring Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, and Simon Callow. Written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and directed by James Ivory.

Just a little DOD Rewrite Idea
I think it would have been so cool if Helena was Marcus Brody's daughter. It would make her whole "haha I take priceless artifact and sell it to the highest bidder" even more of a slap in the face to Indy because of how dedicated Marcus was to the protection of antiquities AND give them a cooler history together. Hell, they could even keep the adorable dorky "wombat" nickname! They could have even kept the whole bit about Helena's father (Basil in the movie, Brody in my rewrite idea) being obsessed with the Dial. I could totally see Brody researching and reading tirelessly about the Dial in his last days as a sort of Museum Curator's last hurrah and Indy being disturbed by his fascination with it, just as he was with Basil. I think they could have found a way to respectfully depict the incredible late Denholm Elliot's likeness without going full on CGI (cough cough, the first 15 minutes of DOD). He would only need to be seen in the flashback with little Helena when Indy and her father argue over the Dial, and hell, there are a million creative ways to frame a lookalike actor from behind/the side that trick the brain into going dang that really does look like Denholm Elliot! This has been one heck of a ramble but all of this to say I think having Helena be Marcus Brody's daughter would make the whole story much more emotionally compelling, and would make Indy's disgust with and eventual love and admiration for Helena that much more satisfying. AND AT THE END WHEN EVERYBODY REUNITES IT WOULD BE LIKE MARCUS IS THERE WITH THEM IN A WAY BECAUSE HIS LOVE FOR INDY, MARION, AND SALLAH LIVES ON THROUGH HIS DAUGHTER WHO IS NOW AN UNOFFICIAL MEMBER OF THE FAMILY AND oh my goodness I just realized THEY COULD EVEN HAVE HER RECITE THE LITTLE DORKY COLLEGE POEM THAT HENRY JONES SR. AND MARCUS DO IN TLC AT SOME POINT IT WOULD BE SO CUTE. PHEW! Apologies! Hope you liked my hot take, I sure raised my own blood pressure writing it. XD

A Room with a View (1985)
“A Room with a View is a sensitive and perceptive romantic feature that isn’t just a high point for Merchant-Ivory, but also for the genre as a whole. It is not to be missed.”
