Case study and analysis of the 1992 Good Omens movie screenplay (“the shitscript”) in light of the ongoing WGA strike

As one could suspect, the topic of the 1992 Good Omens movie screenplay and its infamy has recently emerged from the depths of the fandom. In light of the ongoing WGA strike it’d be good to properly address this issue, starting with Neil Gaiman’s own recollection written in 2004:

It’s basically the same old story — of brilliant creative workers struggling under the pressure of detached studio executives and being legally forced to mutilate their work again and again for no artistic or economic reason — we’ve heard before in many different contexts.

If you’re reading this and somehow still wondering why writers are fighting for their rights at the moment, their job security hasn’t changed much since then. Please follow the WGA, SAG-AFTRA, and other unions’ official channels for detailed information and ways to help the cause.

Anyway, it took over a decade and an enormous effort to print the screenplay in a limited edition of 552 copies. It can’t be distributed otherwise due to IP law, but some fans shared its fragments online and heavily criticized them, dubbing the 1992 source material #shitscript

There’s been obviously a lot of controversies over the changes in the plot and the relationship between the main characters. And rightfully so — the number of iterations has created something very different from the beloved book and the award-winning show we can all enjoy today.

It’s… objectively not good. Wouldn’t be considered a hit back then and certainly not by today’s standards. I don’t think I would watch it in any other way than through channel surfing. However, it’s not a monstrosity some people believe it to be and not a case of low effort.

Let’s start with the world building: the setting wasn’t changed to the US. It’s still very much based in the UK, mostly London and Tadfield, although the latter lies now by the sea and seems much more ominous. Interestingly, the British Museum becomes a prominent location as well.

The main character and the designated hero is not surprisingly Crowley, this time in his 90s anti-hero glory. If you haven’t watched many movies of this era, esp. dark fantasy, this trope involves middle-age disenchantment, cynicism, as well as hefty doses of sarcasm and brooding.

90s anti-heroes are a dark, grim, and unnecessarily violent embodiment of power fantasy, matching the destructive ideology of that time. Combined with uber-masculinity and performative strength over weaker characters, nowadays they naturally evoke more cringe or worry than awe.

1992 iteration of Crowley is basically in his Furfur era. Deeply unhappy and stuck in a dead end job, all he talks about is how he hates Earth and his assignment here, considering a transfer to Alpha Centauri as his one and only possibility of career advancement. Or life, really.

The talking part is important here, because he clearly compensates by insulting everything and everyone. He hates on the whole planet at length only to confess that he’d rather stay here with Aziraphale due to “no good restaurants”, “no decent bottle of wine” in Alpha Centauri.

Yes, he’s verbally abusive in his automatic response to stress. But doesn’t hate Aziraphale. In one particular scene he calls Azi stupid twice only to assure him that they are friends and to offer to solve the problem when he sees that his words were taken seriously and hurt him.

Crowley refers to him as “my angel” and “my dear Aziraphale”, agrees to Aziraphale’s suggestion of sharing a room, praises the angel as a “miracle worker around the home”, drinks the tea he makes for him, and generally proves to be much softer towards him than he wants to admit.

Aziraphale, on the contrary, wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s the one engineering ways to spend more time together, following Crowley around, checking up on him (including miracling himself into his apartment and office when no one answers the door), offering help right away.

He’s successfully calming Crowley down through his anxiety attacks, overcomes his dislike of heights (!) for Crowley, directly challenges him and even breaks rules only to make Crowley stay with him. Crowley seems to be his main motivation in this movie, not the saving the world.

1992 Aziraphale also has the most badass scene in the whole Good Omens multiverse to date, taking a 180 degree turn from the typical guardian angel we all know and love to the real angel of wrath protecting Crowley from harm in his true form.

But there’s no Their Side in this universe. The only semblance of that concept appears in the context of Anathema not representing either of their respective bosses, but humanity. “That’s the trouble with the humans. They’re on their own side.”

This Crowley appears not as much on Hell’s side as under Satan’s heel. He’s scared of him and subservient, and needs Aziraphale to prevent his escape as a pretext to do what is right. He lets the angel stop him by pretending that he doesn’t even see him cheating during their duel.

By finally standing up to his toxic boss (Satan is like Gabriel during the body-swapped trial, suave and cruel) and leaving Hell’s side to do good, Crowley takes an emancipated and employee-focused stance instead of fighting for his relationship with Aziraphale like shown in S1.

Which is a shame, but matches the overall tone of the screenplay and the times it was written in. The concept of free will, while simplified in a true Hollywood-style to issues like mind control and fear, is still crucial to this interpretation of the Good Omens original plot.

Especially the character of Anathema is seen fighting both of these things. There’s no Agnes Nutter with her prophecies here, only a 21-year-old witch and her will to thwart the ultimate evil versus her fear of doing it at a cost of one boy’s life, versus Satan’s brainwashing.

Madame Tracy appears slightly redesigned as a new character as well, but isn’t 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 for the most part. She’s been enjoying her youth way too much to see how fast it was fleeting, and this sudden realization left her in shock from which she denies to come back.

Unfortunately she’s also the one who took in baby Adam and now stays under his care. The level of his parentification is unnerving, much like his bullying and loneliness. He struggles to be loved and ask for love, which becomes his main quest beyond, y’know, the apocalypse thing.

Don’t worry, despite everything all ends well just like in the book. The family of two gets a chance to start again on much healthier terms and Anathema to live for herself for the first time in years. Our heroes get back in their car, Crowley tempting Aziraphale with an apple.

I wanted to read one last book to close out the year, so I shopped through my bookshelf for a small little novel I could read in a few days and ended up pulling out my copy of The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger (CITR).

I never read CITR in high school. My AP teacher had the privilege of being able to assign us non-state standard readings and took full advantage of it. And in college, professors just assume you've already been forced to read it. But, nope. Not me.

I actually bought my copy many years ago from Goodwill when I lived in [redacted city], then proceeded to forget about it until now. I only mention this because my copy is apparently the UK edition and doesn't have so much as a synopsis on the back. So beyond knowing a little bit about the misinterpreted poem scene and that everyone HATES Holden Caulfield, I had no idea what this book was even about.

And... holy fuck.

This book is AMAZING.

At first, I just thought it was funny. I was enjoying how much of a shit head Holden is, and all the ways he is such a teenager. He's insightful, but draws some of the dumbest conclusions you have ever seen. He thinks he's so suave and cool, and it's so clear that everyone thinks he's a loser. He wants so badly to be thought well of by his peers while not respecting any of them. I love how Salinger writes his narration, how he branches off into little anecdotes about barely related topics.

But at some point, I just got so sad for him. I'm not sure where exactly it hit me, but at some point you can't help but see how tragic he is. He truly is in so much pain and has no idea how to process any of it. He's traumatized and has been failed by every adult in his life. No one is helping him.

But for a character that has such a reputation for being a manipulative man, he really does seem like a child who is scared to grow up. I was surprised to find out that the titular catcher in the rye monologue was about wanting to protect the innocence of other kids. With the way people discuss this kid, you would think he was conspiring to kill, well, John Lennon.

By the end of the story, when he's with Phoebe at the carousel and he's feeling happy for once in his life, I was crying (or as Holden would say, that killed me).

I then proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes staring at the ceiling, just trying to make sense of it all.

It's such a shame that this novel has been so thoroughly marred by its controversy. I tried to talk to my sister about it afterwards, and she just got really hung up about how she always thought Holden Caulfied was a "psycho" and "one-step away from being a school shooter."

Which, no? Did we even read the same book? Are we still talking about the same kid? He's a brat, but he's not out there to hurt anyone one.

I'm not sure how I would have felt about this book had I actually read it in high school. On one hand, I had a hefty respect for classics when I was a teen and would never dare claim that any one of them is terrible or stupid (except The Great Gatsby). But on the other, I think that a teacher that tried to teach this novel as Holden being a character who has profound thoughts and sees through the veneer of polite society (like apparently how it was taught to my brother)... I mean, I would have believed it but adult me certainly doesn't agree.

This book definitely lays a blueprint for Robert Cormier's entire catalogue, and I was obsessed with his books in junior high. So I probably would have inevitably liked CITR.

I'm glad I waited until now to read it. Teenage me wouldn't have understood everything in it. Older and (hopefully) wiser me does, and she will defend Holden Caulfield with her life.

Hi, it’s quite hard to give advice about the degree itself because no two degrees will ever be the same. Each university writes their own programme so experiences really will differ depending on where you study (I’m assuming you’re in the UK!)

My general advice would be to attend everything. Get your butt to every single seminar, lecture and workshop. They’re invaluable. Go to every single event you can too - my uni would host plays, live readings, ‘audience with’ events, q&a’s with visiting authors, poets, theatre companies etc all the time, and one of my biggest regrets is not attending more of them.

Enter all the story/writing competitions they hold and take every opportunity to submit your work for feedback sessions.

Do the assigned reading. You will be asked questions about it.

Don’t leave your assignments until the last minute. Deadlines approach fast and you usually end up having several assignments due around the same time. Pulling all-nighters in the uni library isn’t as fun as it sounds. My friends and I all went literally crazy one time after a 36 hour stint and - spoiler - none of us came out with a first for that assignment. Also your tutors will notice when your work is rushed or hasn’t been proofread/edited.

Engage in discussions in class. Ask questions, answer them, put forward ideas or suggestions. The best seminars I ever attended were the ones where the room buzzed, where the students bounced off the tutor and vice versa.

Similarly, always try to give valuable feedback to your peers. Don’t just say ‘yeah it was good’ or sit there silent during workshops/feedback sessions. Be honest, be vocal, be constructive. It’s up to you guys as the students to make the most out of these sessions.

Year 8!

- Studying! -

Now that you’re in year 8 you’ll be learning more things. Aka “Building on the basics” the basics being what you learned in year 7! It helps to revise all your notes after school! Just have a read-through for 5 minutes for each subject!

(For school supplies and study methods you can have a look on TikTok,Pinterest,YouTube or Google. I have a brief list of supplies and study methods on my yr 7 post!)

Please if you haven’t already start keeping to a routine. For example (my routine):

7:30 am - wake up

7:35 am - Make bed

7:38 am - Breakfast

7:45 am - Brush teeth, skincare and hair

8:00 am - Get dressed into uniform

8:05 am - accessories

8:08 am - Check bag and pack snack

8:10 am - shoes and jacket if it’s cold

8:13 am - leave for school

8:30 am - 4:30 pm school

4:48 pm - take uniform off

4:50 pm - unpack lunchbox and rest until 5:15 pm

5:15 pm - do homework that’s assigned

5:50 pm - Revision

6:30 pm - Adding extra stuff to my notes

6:50 pm - finish studying

As you can see it’s a pretty simple 1hr 35m study routine which for me is very effective. Try and develop your own routine because it can keep you on track and really lowers the chaos level.

You can start wearing light makeup if you wish. (TikTok has great examples)

Start making your notes more descriptive, and write down anything YOU think is necessary + the required notes.

When you are taking notes stick to a colour scheme on that page, it helps if you don’t have an entire rainbow in your notebook. Also don’t highlight EVERYTHING, only what’s highlighted on the source you’re copying from and a few extra things that you feel you need for revision and exams. (Keyword :etc..)

I’ve seen this a lot when I was in year 8, people make their titles size of half the page in calligraphy. It takes up class time and is not needed. Try making a simple one or two line title with your pen or highlighter.

l'm guessing you probably wear uniform!

For girls I recommend rolling your skirt up once if you have knee length skirts. If you have a dress then try have them mid way. If you have ankle length skirts then leave them as so!

If you are allowed to wear accessories, I recommend small necklaces, simple rings and crystal or beaded bracelets. Any hair accessories which match your uniform can also help!

If you aren't allowed accessories then get cute shoes! Please make sure they fit into the description of the shoes you need! For me personally I have Mary janes! But depending on your uniform you can wear doc martins or

"ballerina" shoes! You can also have a backpack of your liking and packed lunch, they don't need to match and they don't need to have specific colours (unless your school requires you to) keep it simple and cute!

If your school requires you to have your hair up and you care about that rule then I recommend half up half down, ponytail with your hair curled, braids or anything off Pinterest/TikTok!

If you are allowed nail polish or don't care if you aren't allowed, I recommend white, blue or black! Or whichever matches your uniform or is to your liking!

Please wear deodorant and body mist/cologne, it's not flattering if vou smell like a dumpster!
