actually i love it when the characters are all lying. i love it when they all have secrets and none of them trust each other. i love being given clues that solve puzzles i haven't even been presented with yet. i also love it when i get chills watching a scene without even knowing what it means, and when i do know what it means, i get even more chills. i love theorizing and thinking and solving and coming up with possibilities of where a story might be going. i love it and i will do it for free, for fun, for no real reason.

i think the best thing about american psycho is actually how pathetic patrick bateman is actively characterized as and portrayed. he’s insecure, none of the other characters take him seriously, he has to kill people to compensate, he gets visibly triggered over every tiny inconvenience, he’s perceived as a sniveling spineless prick. the psycho in american psycho, who we’re not sure actually exists, is the intimidating sigma male patrick wants to be but is just not. and it’s been thirty years since incels have been misunderstanding and misappropriating this aspect of his character, which adds another layer of humor and harrowing concern to the debacle.

something about gothic deaths… sickness that lasts for weeks and ends with blood stained sheets, days and days of being shut away from everyone that loves you. drowning (perhaps even by choice) in the waters you played in as a child. heartbreak so deep, so sudden, so chilling that it stops the blood flowing in your veins long enough to begin cardiac arrest. mysteriously found stabbed in a haystack. impaled on the spiral tower of a mansion you found on a foreign moor. hypothermia in the woods in the middle of winter, starvation in the streets of an English ghosttown, cut to death on the thorns of a hedge maze, struck down by a monster of your own making. idk. i just think they’re neat

When I was young, I was told that because I liked to read horror novels I didn't read "proper books". Because I liked to write horror, I was told I didn't write "proper stories". An English teacher told me the books I read were Escapism. And I thought: Isn't that the point? Why read Great Expectations if you don't want to be transported to the moors, smuggling food to an escaped convict? Why read Macbeth if you don't want to witness a Scottish noble murder his way into royalty? Why read Moby Dick if you don't want to find out how dull being on a whaling ship would be?

What makes literature acceptable?

There is such snobbishness surrounding fiction. You are reading literature or you are reading trash.

Fuck that. You like reading romance? Wuthering Heights, any Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, Romeo and Juliet, are all considered classics. Science Fiction has Frankenstein, horror has Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Dracula.

The lists are endless. Read what the fuck you want. It's all escapism. That's the point.
