I hadn’t planned on reading this today but damn, I sat and couldn’t put this down.
This is about Morino, a school girl who has a fascination with serial killers. And this town is hot bed for them. She doesn’t want to catch them, but to understand them.
This is told through a series of short stories; more like vignettes; of what this girl and her friend encounter in their town and start to seek out. This was a ride. I enjoyed the writing- translated works always have a bit of disconnect, but it works in this book’s favour. I found myself feeling uncomfortable as this went on; the situations and the characters seemed to get a bit more drastic and more in person with everything that goes on.
I feel like if you liked True Crime by Samantha Kolesnik you’d like this. It’s not as extreme but it has the same vibes. If you enjoy true crime in general really, I think you should pick this up.
TW: animal abuse; if that’s a trigger or sensitive spot don’t read. I did find it not as brutal as other books but it is a huge part of one of the chapters,
I really need to add more translated horror to my TBR.

Not done talking about #halloweenreads tbh and this series is perfect. Like Supernatural meets American Gods meets American Horror Story. An urban legend ghost (hitchhiking dead prom date from the 50s) and her adventures through small town America and its underworld layers. Creepy, unexpected, anthology-ish but trending toward a larger narrative arc (great for bite-size reading if you only have time for a chapter!) and sits nicely in that “horror aesthetic but not too scared to walk to the bathroom at night” zone for me 😂👻🎃🖤 #horrorbooks #spookyreads #seananmcguire #ghostroads https://www.instagram.com/p/CkjUzjyyMsD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Let's be completely honest here: one of the most insidious horrors of It, one of King's most famous (and infamous) novels, is, surprisingly, not the evil killer man-eating clown. Instead, is the scars that abuse, both physical and emotional, leave on children and how they stay with them until adulthood, visible or not.

“Don’t let me fade…” I plead… to her, maybe. Or maybe, it’s an appeal to the universe itself.

Book of Night is the adult debut by Holly Black. I would call this urban fantasy/horror. There is a girl, Charlie, with a past. There are people, called gloamists, who can manipulate their shadows. There are people without shadows and shadows without people. (They’re Blights and are dangerous) Charlie has to find a missing book or bad things will happen. The story and background building took a while to get into. The final act was better and there was a surprising reveal. I kept thinking of Peter Pan (Wendy sewing his shadow) but there was never any mention of that. I was also reminded of The Book of M (where everyone loses their shadow) The whole story felt weird and I had some interesting dreams. 💭 Read the acknowledgments to see some interesting comments from Black about the writing process for this book. Global Distribution Has Been Approved for The Roots Grow Into the Earth
Global distribution for The Roots Grow Into the Earth is live! Read the post to hear about the two variations of my book.
After a long formatting process with Ingramspark, the paperback format of The Roots Grow Into the Earth is now approved for global distribution! What this means is online stores should soon have the paperback format listed, and bookstores can now order physical copies from Ingram. There are a couple of cosmetic differences between the Ingram and Amazon versions of the paperback as well: the Ingram…
