I hate making phone calls, but if that's what it takes...

Hello, Kris! I think I mightāve already gotten the gist of it, but itās been some time. What exactly IS Academia Mode? Are you still in school, or is this your actual job, and it just happens to be involved in the education system?
Many thanks!
hahah no worries!!! that is a good question š¤£ššš for me, academia mode is currently finishing the 5th and final year of my doctoral program and includes (but is not limited to lol):
data collection, analysis, write-ups
writing python programs to support my data cleaning, data coding, stats, and data analysis/visualizations
applying for GRANT MONEYYYY
submitting abstract proposals to conferences (and applying for MORE GRANT MONEYYYY)
reporting research findings (writing journal article manuscripts, preparing conference slides)
writing my actual dissertation manuscript lol
supporting and instructing my research assistants
sharing my research with mainstream public audiences
writing my non-fiction book based on my ongoing dissertation research
teaching classes, grading papers, holding office hours, fielding emails, writing letters of recommendation for all sorts of students' fellowships/grad admissions/grant applications, teaching students how to strategize their personal statements, grant purpose letters, and other aspects of apps, etc.
peer-reviewing others' journal manuscripts, providing feedback to colleagues (blind review or not)
assisting with my advisor's research and textbook manuscripts (proofreading, copy-editing, internet sleuthing, finding more up-to-date citations, occasionally writing rough drafts)
writing chapters for edited volumes on various topics
READING. all the time. reading new literature and research articles constantly. ALL THE TIME. writing 1-pagers and mini-annotated bibs for future lit review use, etc.
WRITING. all the time. professional-speak, academic-speak, insructor-speak.
getting paid to travel to conferences to present my research (GRANT MONEYYYYYY)

this has genuinely been the most difficult and overwhelming semester of my entire life and on top of the fact that i'm up to my fuckin eyeballs in work and grading, the fact that i've had two flop dissertation meetings and i cant even get the fuckin prospectus started because of it is killing me.
i'm on tumblr today and i'm finding other ways to waste time and i know it's all a bit of anxiety-driven self-sabotage. but every time i think to do something productive -- get my grading done, do some research -- i think about the fact that yesterday, a professor just causally told me to read 30-40 books by the time that we meet again next month like that's a perfectly normal thing to expect from a person who finished reading 94 books in six months!
and then i think about the fact that the same professor suggested i'd done no research and didn't know anything substantial about any of my proposed dissertation topics when i've been doing nothing but research every free chance i get and i do know things!! i've read five books of criticism and three novels in the one month since we last spoke! i took 10 pages of notes about my research!! and perhaps most frightening of all, she asked: what are you really contributing here in terms of something that hasn't already been said a hundred times before? and what am i supposed to say in answer to that? how do i find a new thing to say about wuthering heights or jane eyre that hasnt been said before when so much of that is developed in the process of writing and research but i can't do both until i get the okay on a proposal? all this time, i've been told not to worry about that: to trust that nobody can approach these books the way i can, that the novelty will be everything that i uniquely bring into my analysis, and besides that, when i tried to do something that hasn't been done before by proposing i do a paper on the latin american gothic, i got torn to shreds by half the people i spoke to this idea about! jesus christ! jesus fucking christ!!
#personal#vent session#i just need to get this out bc i've been swinging between these huge waves of anxiety and this overwhelming sadness since yesterday afterno#school stuff

Whats your dissertation about? (if you dont mind sharing, I love learning what people online are up to academically)
Gonna be honest, this turned into me writing out a good bit of the dis outline so I've put it under a cut, but for reference, this mindmap is all of the initial ideas research Ive done for this
So the working title rn is
'Passion, Plagiarism, and Piracy: Are Digital Spaces and Practices Having A Negative Impact on the Creative Industries and How We Engage with Them?'
which is very inspired by talks I've been having this past year with my lecturer about the design industry (in Scotland, at least) and how many studios are actively searching out people working with analogue methods rather than digital ones. I thought it was an interesting move as design specifically is heavily associated with digital methods (aka the Adobe suite), and the advancements in these technologies should be making digital design more innovative, more appealing etc etc but it's having the opposite effect.
I'm looking at how generative AI is a large contributor to this mentality, or at least potentially the catalyst for it. I've admittedly already looked at genAI A LOT for uni work, so I've got a lot to go on with this. Specifically, I'd look at the Accessibility arguments with AI and the 'i could do that' attitude people have to art and design today (this is the plagiarism section)
Id also look at digital piracy and the ethics and morals around that in today's society. Is it ever acceptable to pirate something? how much does piracy cost and impact creatives? This section is likely to be a little anecdotal but I'm also going to look at Alex Hirsch and the ULTRAKILL dev. His quote "culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it" is the entire reason I'm adding a chapter on class and how that influences all of these other factors.
Moving on from class as an influence and barrier, a dedicated section to creative passion and how acting upon that passion is, in itself, a radical act. With conservative views on the rise and intentional cuts to creative industries and cultures to aid in this, being unapologetically creative is fighting back. I believe that engaging with AI trends and devaluing art and design, being ok with artists and designers being underpaid and fighting for employment, is indicative of being complacent in the rise and normalisation of these views.
The difference in how artists/designers engage with the creative industries Vs non artists/designers (for the sake of ease, I'm going to call them consumers until I think of something better) is night and day. Consumers are likely to only care about the final product and aren't concerned with material or process, where as I'd argue for creatives, material and process are half the fun.
Social media also gives an unrealistic idea of the creative industries. Amateur artists, posting their work for fun and community, may be held to standards and expectations of a professional. A professional artist/designer may be expected to post as if that were their full time job regardless of how they work or who they're working for. Both are detrimental to the individual and industry. There's a fundamental misunderstanding of how long things take in professional contexts and people will form whole opinions and beliefs because of this misunderstanding (people really think Overwatch developed an entire game mode with new maps and character abilities in 2 months in response to marvel rivals. they did not.)
this will all come together in a cohesive conclusion that I don't have enough research to form yet.
Thank you for asking anon, I actually did need to write it all out like this as part of the proposal and was really struggling to do it and now I have!! also if anyone has any points you think I should/could explore, PLEASEEEE tell me about it, it would be awesome :]
#legitimately writing it out here has been a huge help#i am open to follow up questions also#it will only help šš#yapping#asks

So as I am busy - or rather should be busy - drafting my dissertation, planning a research proposal for my masterās applications and writing God knows how many personal statements, Iāve of course thought it was urgent to start rewriting my fics.Ā
Anyway that one underwent significant change and is angsty (Albus & Severus):Ā
That wee oneās just in decent English now, and I need to work on the last chapter of A Small Respite but the first three chapters are also in decent English (Severus & Minerva). Update: last chapter completed. Enjoy!
#Goes to show how terribly desperate I am to procrastinate because I was terrified to look at 18yo me's English#And rightly so because it is horrendous I'm grateful for anyone who put up with it and will just swallow my shame now#As some of you have asked I'll also put my favourite tumblr stuff on there at some point#Harry Potter fanfictions#severus snape#pro snape#minerva mcgonagall#Albus Dumbledore

How To Write A Dissertation OrĀ Thesis

Writing a dissertation or thesis involves a structured process that requires careful planning and execution. Hereās a detailed discussion, covering the key steps in the dissertation writing process.
Step 1: Understand what a dissertation is.

A dissertation is a formal piece of research that follows the standard research process, involving four key steps:
Ask a specific, well-articulated research question(s): Clearly define the focus of your study.
Review existing literature: Explore what other researchers have said about your question.
Undertake your own research: Collect and analyze data in a scientifically rigorous fashion.
Answer your original question(s): Base your conclusions on your analysis findings.
Ensure that your dissertation is a formal piece of research, avoiding personal opinions or preconceived ideas.
Step 2: Find a unique, valuable researchĀ topic

Select a research topic that possesses three key attributes:
Clear: Clearly articulate what you plan to research, the questions you want to answer, and the context of your study.
Unique: Address questions that havenāt been answered before, or explore them in a specific context.
Important: Ensure that your research creates value, contributing to the field of research or industry.
Conduct thorough research to identify a topic that is both unique and valuable.
Step 3: Write a convincing researchĀ proposal

Craft a research proposal that convinces your university or committee of the worthiness of your research. Your proposal should include:
Clearly articulated, unique, and important topic: Justify why your research is significant.
Review of existing literature: Demonstrate that youāve done enough reading to identify a clear gap for original research.
Provisional plan: Outline how you will collect and analyze data (methodology).
Show that youāve done your homework and that your research is worthy of approval.
Step 4: Craft a strong introduction chapter
Use your approved proposal as the basis for your introduction chapter, which should include:
Brief background to the study: Explain the overall area of research.
Problem statement: Identify the problem with the current state of research.
Research questions: Outline the specific questions your study will seek to answer.
Significance of your study: Explain why your research is important and how its findings will be useful.
The introduction sets the scene for your research and justifies your research topic.
Step 5: Undertake an in-depth literature review

Go beyond initial literature review steps and create a comprehensive literature review chapter by:
Reading up: Deep dive into existing literature to understand the current state of research.
Writing up: Synthesize existing research, highlight a research gap, and use the literature to inform your methodology.
The literature review is the foundation on which your research is built.
Step 6: Carry out your ownĀ research

Design a research strategy and craft a methodology chapter that explains the āhowā of your research:
Design your research strategy: Decide on your research philosophy, methodology, data collection, and analysis strategy.
Execute: Collect and analyze your data based on your research design.
Ensure your research design aligns with your topic, research questions, and data.
Step 7: Present yourĀ findings

Present your findings in two chaptersāāāresults and discussion. The results chapter should present processed data, while the discussion chapter provides your interpretation of the results:
Results chapter: Present processed data without interpretation.
Discussion chapter: Explain the story the data are telling and interpret the results in relation to your research questions.
Link your discussion back to your research questions outlined in the introduction.
Step 8: Draw a conclusion and discuss the implications

In the conclusion chapter, summarize key findings and discuss their implications:
Key findings: Highlight results directly related to your research questions.
Implications: Explain what your findings mean for industry or research in your area.
Bring your research full circle by answering the āwhatā and āso what?ā questions.
Remember to check your universityās requirements for additional elements like the abstract, reference list, and appendices. Writing a dissertation is a detailed process, but by following these steps, you can craft a high-quality, well-structured document.
Wishing you all the best in writing your Dissertation, we hope this discussion will help.

Sab, my dearest, my beloved, the light of my life,
I know I'm two weeks late (and that a certain professor would be on my ass for it) but I had the wonderful idea of re-reading the whole Prof Geto series before reading part 6, thinking it would make for the best emotional impact and after doing just that I have to say... my hypothesis was correct. There wasn't a single second where I regretted my decision (except, maybe when I had to read the breakup scene again š), not a single dull word in the +90k masterpiece you wrote (isn't that the length of a novel!?), the flow of your writing is just so good, the dialogue, the internal conflict of the characters... I loved all of it, Sab. This series holds a special place in my heart and I'll probably read it time and time again in the future ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
And this chapterā god. I really have no words, it was just a whirlwind of emotions. I was giggling and kicking my feet in the hair like a teenager and I even cried at some point. I loved the beginning, the raw emotion of seeing each other again after what happened, the longing... the way Suguru and Yuta felt so conflicted about their feelings for the reader, and her getting jealous over Mei Mei... omg.
I also loved how Geto helped her with the citations of her dissertation (they were my worst nightmare during undergrad) and hated how Yuta broke up with her right after she presented it. How could he ruin such and special day like that!!! (Ofc I know it made sense to have it happen right then, but gosh šš) but anyway, regarding Yuta... I love how you've set up his part. I'll love to read it when the time comes ā¤ļøā¤ļø
Oh! And the way Yaga *knew*. Now I can't believe that the whole reader assigned as a T.A thing wasn't tampered by him in some wayā he had to play a part in that, and I bet he wasn't too fussed with them sharing a hotel room, as long as Suguru was happy hahah.
And then, the passion in his office, the reconciliation and the ending... I had to stop reading a couple of times because I was getting way too emotional, Sab. It was beautiful. I can't wait to see more of them in the extra credit fics (!!) I really hope you make a proposal one <3
I wanted to thank you for writing this series, I've loved it more than I could ever expect to and I believe it came to me in a point of my life where it just... made sense. I was stressed and unsure about continuing in academia and I believe I told you a few months back that I was applying to grad school... well, I got accepted and then hired as a research assistant at the same university!! This is as close as it gets to me living reader's life though I'll keep living vicariously through her for a while longer, I think.
Anywayā I believe I'm babbling now. I just want to thank you again for writing this wonderful series. I'm so excited for Prof Gojo and all the wonderful things you'll write in the future, Sab ā¤ļø
baby, love of my life, the sun to my earth
haha I think prof geto would more than forgive you ā especially after the diligent work you did rereading ā dare I say he would be very impressedāand I am too omg
I cannot believe you read all 90K+ thatās insane and it means so much to me šš„¹ thank you so much ā it truly means the world to me because I had so much fun writing it!! it was really a special series to me and will continue to be as I write more extra credit fics :).
ahhh I canāt believe you cried š Iām sorry but also thank you haha. itās the biggest compliment šš„¹ I really wanted to convey both yuta and suguruās conflicted emotions ā and Iām glad they came across š writing mei mei was so fun because it was very spur of the moment ā and I love jealous reader š„¹š«£
citations are truly a nightmare and when I thought of the idea to have that be readerās crisis, it was so perfect because I think so many of us in academics can relate to that š we all deserve a suguru. I canāt wait to write yuta!!! itās def gonna have stuff from prof Geto like the repercussions of his relationship with reader and it will be fun :)
hahah yaga knowing was also spur of the moment ā it just felt full circle since so many times heās also pulled them apart in some way ššš
thank you š„¹š Iām glad you enjoyed the reconciliation scene ā it was so important to me to get that so right. and I really took my time and Iām glad you think I got it right š„¹ššIām def writing the proposal!!! Donāt worry :)
aww baby thank you for reading šš„¹ Iām so glad this series could help you in any small way that it did. omg I do remember and thatās amazing!!!! Congratulations Iām so so proud of you (and professor geto is too)!!!
writing this series also came at the perfect time for me because it just was such a wonderful thing to post a new part and see everyoneās reactions ā it truly made my day. I especially loved your asks as well š„¹š
thank you for being here and sticking around. I canāt wait to start writing more of professor gojo ā I think you guys will really like it š«¶š„¹š
#sab [asks]#satorusmochis#also I love your username so much#it always makes me smile#sab series [prof suguru]#sab [praise]
