I literally am cursed with visions and sometimes wake up in a cold sweat to pace around my room thinking about this and what he must have endured to become the person he was. Like researching the Heian era has been my hobby for the past month, when I'm not writing or at work I'm researching because my degree is in anthropology and my job provides me with very little stimulation in that department, and I have an insane thirst for knowledge and have studied anatomy, in addition to working in the medical simulation field closely with med students and doctors, and enjoy all of that (held a human heart in my hand once which was super cool)

Anyways, onto my further Sukuna thoughts:

Things Heian Era Japan was cool with: Infanticide.

It was a fairly common practice to leave babies you either couldn't take care of, or who suffered from disabilities out into the woods and leave them. It was considered a mercy, and that it would release their soul back into the universe to be reincarnated.

Beauty in the Heian era was very closely linked with goodness. If you were beautiful it meant you were a good person, with the inverse also being true. In a world of superstitions where evil was thought to be the work of demons, where curses and spirits (actually are real in the jjk world) lurk around every corner, how would a child have been treated having been born with four arms, two mouths, and two faces?

There would be two schools of thought imo, one, his mother took him out into the woods and left him to die. Or, what I think is more likely, was too afraid of him to do that because what if pissing off a demon just made things worse?

Gege confirmed that Sukuna has never considered himself human despite having been born one, and I posit that started with his own mother being absolutely terrified of him. In a world of curses and demons and spirits where beautiful is seen as good, giving birth to something so deformed, how could that be human? (I also think he would have been born with teeth, it does occasionally happen and it would make sense given that he devoured his twin)

How early RCT factors into this:

His autoimmune disorder would have been attacking his body and probably stunting his growth, damaging his organs, etc.

Medical trauma - I have no doubt that at multiple times in his life, people had tried to "humanize" him in the form of amputation attempts. (I also think that's where at least one of his tattoos come into play as well as the name 'Sukuna')

His mother was starving, and the Heian era is marked with many famines and high taxes that starved out average working class people. He was likely malnourished, so on top of everything he was going through, his body probably wasn't healing itself on its own

It was quite literally a situation of: if he didn't develop RCT early, he would have died very young.

To elaborate on some of that, Sukuna should probably be even taller and/or wider than he is so that his body could accommodate his organs since his second mouth takes up like a third of his abdomen. His organs are probably failing because they can't keep up with his body and because of his autoimmune issues. This is how he knows how to essentially make his body work with cursed energy and RCT.

I am once again thinking about disabled sukuna

what's pokeymanz? I'm only really familiar with a very simplistic pokemon system made by the GM for the Unexpectables campaign (it ain't bad, but I'm down for something with potentially more to it), also like, kinda surprised kinda not at people trying to contort 5e to fit pokemon, feels like folks try to cram everything into D&D 5e

yeah! so!! pokeymanz is a very cool system which aims (and IMO succeeds) to capture the feel of the pokémon anime in a game system. it's compatible with basically any generation or concept you can think of in pokémon bc it's such an open-ended while still giving plenty of guidelines for how to handle different kinds of things that appear across the games/shows/etc. there's even rules for playing as a pokémon à la PMD or meowth.

you can download the rulebook HERE, and honestly i'd recommend checking it out if you enjoy pokémon even if you have no interest in the game - it's very funny and enjoyable to read lol. it is based on Savage Worlds and GURPS, but I am not very familiar with either system so I can't speak much on that.

also, silliness aside, of course people can do whatever they want wrt game systems - you should be aiming to do what makes you happy first and foremost. but in my personal opinion, D&D 5e has pretty in-depth mechanics that reflect the goals and even the setting they were built for on a pretty deeply fundamental level, and trying to hack a completely different system into that just seems like... such a pain...

I am pretty sure I have also seen crunchier systems for pokémon made wholesale, which imo seems preferable to hacking it into 5e, even if it might require more work. but even then, I feel like... if I wanted a really robust pokémon battle system with specific rules and complicated math for how everything works, i would simply play the video game pokémon.

i know there are other ones - like whatever they're using on "unbeatable: a kanto journey"? i only just started listening to it and i haven't been able to find any info on what system they're using, but it seems kind of similar to kids on bikes (in that stats are represented by a d4 thru d20 and they explode), but it also seems to have more specific sub-skill checks and a lot of specific rules for how moves work...? so i am not sure what's going on there. been fun so far though.

anyway, check out pokeymanz. it's great timing bc it actually just recently had its final content update and is soon to be out of beta! every so often i get really excited about it and have pipe dreams again of running a campaign lol

There’s an awful lot of smut on here involving snow or finnick and like, do whatever you want, but I can’t lie and say it doesn’t make me immensely uncomfortable. Finnick was a victim of forced prostitution as a MINOR. his conventional attractiveness was exploited, he was seen by everyone as nothing but a hot body and a womanizer when he in actuality was a fucking VICTIM. HE’S NOT A PLAYBOY HE WAS FORCED INTO SEXUAL SLAVERY OR HIS FAMILY WOULD BE KILLED. sexualizing him so much is doing exactly what the Capitol wanted, making him nothing but a plaything.

And you guys realize snow killed children. the point of tbosas was not that he was once an uwu soft boy, the fact that he was conventionally attractive isn’t supposed to be a reason to like him or excuse his actions. you do realize he was using his charm to manipulate people right? right??? his internal monologue throughout the entire book showed how prejudiced and hateful he was even when he held no power. he wasn’t suddenly “changed” to become hateful by Gaul, she manipulated him yes, but the seeds were already there. She just nurtured them. He was like that the entire time, but you don’t notice until he’s outright trying to kill Lucy gray in a selfish panic because you spend the entire book trying to root for him, even though you knew what he would become due to the simple nature of it being a prequel. the book wasn’t trying to make him into a sympathetic little hot boy
