It's closing a door and telling yourself that at least the windows are unlocked.#WWX will keep up his friendliness as a way to hold LWJ at a distance. LWJ can only try to help so many times.#Speaking of tragedies of trying to help; Let's talk about the addiction metaphors in this episode.#WWX tells LWJ in fairly straightforward terms that he does not *want* do be doing ghost cultivation.#What he wants is to protect people - by any means necessary. If he had another option he would take it.#The path WWX 'chose' is one that is deeply mired in external shame and taboo. He jokes about it but it clearly doesn't feel great.#And I put 'chose' in quotes because just like many who find them selves in bad situations - the choice is an illusion.#He's adamant that this is 'his' choice. That he is in control.#Better to be villainized that endure the terrifying reality that you lack any ability to have choice anymore.#If he had the choice - truly had the choice - he would not be doing this.#You can't help those who don't want to be helped. So of course all LWJ can do is watch from the side. Offer a hand when he can.#This life was a tragedy and the countdown to it all blowing up started a long time ago...

Thinking about Krile.
Krile, who woke up one day from a coma to find that she was alone in the world. Who lost her home, her colleagues, her friends, the legacy of her grandfather, all in an instant. Who found out that the gift that she'd cursed for half her life saved her, and no one else. Who thought that maybe, at least her childhood friend and her dearest friend, both in distant Eorzea, might be safe and alive. Who received nothing but silence from either of them. And found out one day, months later, years later, that neither of them were ever coming back.
Krile, who continued on more alone in the world than ever before with nothing but a smile.
(Krile, who we didn't even get to see take a moment to hear about or process the fact that G'raha shut himself in a tower to sleep maybe forever without so much as a goodbye.)
(Krile, who learned that her dearest friend Minfilia was gone forever and simply carried on with a smile because there was work to be done. Much like Minfilia carried on with a smile when she heard her dearest friend Krile was in a coma. Because there was work to do. And to think, Minfilia never got to find out that Krile was all right.)

#dragon age the veilguard#dragon age fanart#lucanis dellamorte#andarateia cantori#viago de riva#illario dellamorte#rook de riva#rook datv#Marisol de Riva#i saw a post once upon a time that mentioned Viago was probably appalled by the mercenary rags Rook was wearing lol and kept that head cano#another scene from the fanfic i have in my head lmao#in my HC story for Marisol the recruitment missions go a little different to kind of take away the game-ified aspect#once in the lighthouse Marisol reaches out to Viago (though lol she does wait for a bit because she got kicked out so she's still upset)#Caterina has been keeping her people watching the Ossuary for any changes because she's been slowly connecting the pieces over the past yea#solas's ritual and other stuff happens and the location gets revealed and weakened etc#rook gets in contact with a letter and a candelhop for viago to use to contact her#bc that's how i'm hc'ing that they get messages in the fade lolol#Caterina approaches Viago with a coded contract packet to send to Rook and the contract is basically to breach the Ossuary#and rescue an imprisoned Crow (Rook is unaware Lucanis is “dead” since she was gone and the contract keeps it vague)#but there's the implication it's someone important since Caterina wants to stage a rescue#the packet with info on the Ossuary also ties the operations happening there with the red lyrium artifacts they've been hunting in Minratho#and the appearance of abominations that aren't like any they've encountered before#so going to the Ossuary ALSO is important to the 'stop the Old Gods' plot#BUT ANYWAY that's why this comic reads like she's just seen Viago again despite having Lucanis with her#and also Lucanis was dirty and naked etc in the Ossuary got temp armor and clothes from an inn keep once they escaped#Illario ALSO moved his plan to attack the Diamond after Zara accidentally let it slip that Lucanis was still alive#he'd been fully operating under the assumption that Lucanis was dead for the past year and was plotting to like...#try to stage things to gain favor with Caterina because she still wasn't budging#but then he overhears Zara yelling at Calivan in a magic mirror or some shit that the Ossuary is being breached and Lucanis has escaped#so Illario panicks and directs the venatori attack on the Diamond and kidnaps Caterina so he can have JSUT A LITTLE LONGER to figure it out

Let's pretend he just sported a different hair style for a brief moment.#I am not exactly great at consistency but I am trying very hard to work on that (immediately messes up again).#Absolutely *love* how Wen Ning clearly remembers and admires WWX...who does *not* recognize him.#This is the best day for Wen Ning and it means *nothing* to WWX. A painful one-sided crush made worse.#It is bittersweet to realize that we care about someone more than they care about us. Sometime we pour love into a relationship-#-with someone who just can't reciprocate. It isn't always a conscious things either. Some people just aren't aware we care.#And painfully - so painfully - You can't make them aware. No act of kindness or gift or self sacrifice will make someone care about you.#You can martyr yourself for someone and they will continue on unchanged.#I think a lot about the parallels between WN and LWJ. Not foils - just reflections. A theme repeated.#People who give so much of themselves to someone who doesn't have the capacity to give any part of themself away.#I will die on the hill of 'Wen Ning would be the love triangle romance if that trope wasn't being avoided'.#And to be honest - thank the stars above that is the case. I really hope that Spider gets to visit Neteyam, gets to see his little brother and play in the memories of the good times. the times before their bond faded. before Neteyam pulled away and became crushed beneath the wait of his parents and clans expectations.
maybe Spider is war-torn and grizzled, while his best memories of Neteyam keep him young and naive of the horrors of the world. maybe when he gets to hold his brother again, his hands calloused and skin scarred, while Neteyam's are tiny and soft.
they can play tag and hide and seek and go fishing. they could just be kids. Spider can escape war for mere moments to just. be at peace. and he'd hug him so tight the kids squeaking "I can't breath, stop!" giggling up a storm. and Neteyam doesn't question why his brother is so much bigger than he remembers, cause he makes a much comfier napping spot.
and maybe Spider gets to see his brother's face, older, but not so tired and worn. his eyes have a younger spark in them, his smile is less weighed down and tight at the corners. his shoulders stronger and held high, no longer bearing too heavy a burden. he can hug this brother freely and tell him he loves him and call him 'brother' without agonizing tension and distance. a chasm in his chest filling in slightly.
knowing his brother is free and happy in Eywa brings him peace.
