Day 22: Heist
Inspired once again by Wicked Thing by @imaginaryanon
•••
“Would having a Knight’s lightsaber help?” Anakin asks; his voice sounds strained even to him.
“Yes,” Jocasta says, raising an eyebrow at him. “For somebody who hasn’t actually come here to do his job, you’re rather well-informed. Yes, for ease of access to the Vault we’ve established an entry system based on the energy signature of specific lightsabers. But even if this is indeed what happened here, if somebody managed to impersonate a Jedi Knight, having their lightsaber wouldn’t be enough. It would require a great deal of effort and time spent in the company of said Knight to get to know their mind intimately enough to fool the alarm systems.”
Anakin crosses his arms on his chest, mostly to physically restrain himself from igniting his lightsaber and driving it though his own gut.
So the Sith Lord just took his saber, reached into his mind because Anakin welcomed him in, disguised himself as a Jedi, and walked in and out of the Vault like he belonged there.

JangObi soulmate mark au where all Mandalorians know/can sense when someone is marked with their Mandalor [with Jango leading Mandalore as Mandalor after Jasters abdication and no clan wars]
Tumblr media
(this is late because it turned into A Thing. and i love the Thing, but it’s still late.
i combined these ‘cause i got them within a day of each other and i thought, what’s better than an undercover meet-cute? undercover meet-cute with soulmates (ノ*´◡`) also this is a meet-ugly. anyways.
just want to touch on that this ‘verse absolutely includes poly soulmates of many forms and numbers, jangobi just happen to have a mono relationship in this based on the prompts 😌)
“Your sur'gaankar will not share your symbol, you cannot simply look for a match, kih’vod,” Arla teases, poking at Jango’s bare chest where the head of his roughly-drawn mynock leers at them from over his heart. “Marks are companions, not twins; no one soul should be more important than another, so the Ka’ra gave us two. Who knows what your sur'gaankar's is, it could be of something that hasn’t even happened to you yet.”
Seven year-old Jango wrinkles his nose down at his soulmark like it’s personally offended him. And it has. “Why the kriff do you get a beskad from your sur'gaankar and I get a bloody mynock?”
Arla bursts into laughter and hopes their parents aren’t listening.
-
  “I beg your pardon.”
The woman’s grin only widens, leaning right into Obi-Wan’s space, and he hadn’t really counted on running into any supercommandos until Sundari. “‘Haven’t seen your crest before,” the woman repeats, knocking on the painted crest on his chestplate. He had let Master Nu pick it for this assignment, he didn’t want to accidentally end up with a known clan symbol and have to explain any familial relation; she had said it hadn’t been used since before the Coruscant Temple was built, so there shouldn’t be any confusion.
“And,” she had added, tapping two fingers on the side of his neck, “it matches you rather nicely, doesn’t it?”
And he supposes it does, a crane wrapped around a spike of wheat, but he now wishes it were something perhaps a bit less memorable.
“My clan hasn’t been back to Mandalore space in a few generations,” Obi-Wan lies with his best apologetic smile, easily charming the other Mando as he tucks his helmet under his arm and tries to turn back to the ration stall he’d been restocking from. The Keldabe marketplace bustles around them, and Obi-Wan thinks it’s a miracle the woman had even spotted his armour through the crowd, with how tightly species of all sorts press together and jostle them along their way.
“I’m Kryze clan,” she announces, wriggling around an Esperion to plant herself next to Obi-Wan, giving the rations a passing glance before focusing back on her captive audience.
He holds back a sigh, pulling up his mental clan map that he had studied on the jump to Mandalore. “I’ve only been planetside for an hour,” he admits with that same smile as he pays for his box of jerky and taps a little salute to the stall owner. “I thought the Kryzes were further up towards Sundari?”
Kryze bounces along behind him, red hair catching the sunlight quite nicely; Obi-Wan can’t fathom why she’s still following him. “Most of the family is, yeah, I’m the only supercommando. Where’re you from, burc’ya? Your accent sounds funny.”
He gives a bewildered laugh at that; had she never been to the Core? Both ducking into a dimly-lit tech shop, Kryze waves at the Mon Calamari behind the counter like old friends.
“‘Family’s split between Coruscant and Odos,” Obi-Wan decides on, which would explain both his Core accent and why his Mando’a is more slurred than what’s spoken on Mandalore. “You got a first name to go with that clan?”
Kryze’s smile turns playful, not quite flirtatious, and Obi-Wan wonders if she’s already found her starmark. “Bo-Katan, but Haat’ade can call me Bo. And are you?”
He raises a brow through a shelf of droid parts. “Am I what?”
“Haat’ade,” Bo-Katan grins, staying closer to the door while Obi-Wan collects a few upgrades for his speeder. “You don’t seem like a Journeyman Protector, but you’re clearly a fighter. So. Haat Mando’ade?”
“Can I be Haat’ade if I haven’t answered my Mand’alor’s call even once?” It’s an amusing thought, to be seen as Mando enough to qualify for the ruler of Mandalore’s supercommandos; he doubts Bo-Katan would be quite so kind if she knew he wears their armour in deception. “No, burc’ya, one cannot pick and choose from the Resol’nare. I’m as good as dar’manda out here.”
Humming in thought, she skips to join him at the counter to watch him try to haggle a lower price on his goods. “To be fair, you said your clan hasn’t been around other Mando’ade in a while, ‘lek? Hells, do you even know who the current Mand’alor is?”
Obi-Wan doesn’t answer until he knows he’s not being ripped off by the Mon Calamari, and slips his new goggles around his neck. “Only his crest,” he says, and it’s only slightly a lie: the Republic has little to no sway in Mandalore space, he doubts anyone further than Concordia knows the Mand’alor’s full name. “Tell me, are you part of the recruiting committee?”
Bo-Katan throws her head back to laugh, and it’s a good laugh, bright and sincere, still a little childish at the edges. “No, but I liked the look about you,” she teases, leaning on the counter. “You seemed... warm.”
He lifts a brow again, wondering if maybe she’s Force sensitive. “I’ve never been called that before.” Which also isn’t exactly a lie.
“Mm, maybe I just liked finding another redhead.” She smiles and wrinkles her nose cutely. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed that you didn’t give your name, stranger. Secrecy will only get you so far here.”
“And if I wasn’t planning on staying?”
“Then you should still tell me your name because I asked so nicely.” Batting her eyelashes, she sets her helmet on the counter to cross her arms, the Mon Calamari grumbling but not telling them to leave just yet.
“Vhett,” Obi-Wan laughs, securing his new parts and his credit pouch in his pack so he doesn’t lose them to the sticky fingers in the marketplace. “Benyamin Vhett.”
When he looks back at his new companion, her smile has disappeared for a troubled sort of blankness, as she looks at him even more critically.
Then her surprise and glee is a flash in the Force, so bright it’s blinding as she launches back to her feet, grin returning with such a fury that Obi-Wan doesn’t even stop her from getting right back into his space.
She must find some sort of answer in his face, because she puts a hand on his cheek with her eyes positively shining. “Utreekov!” she exclaims gleefully, “How could you string me along like that?”
  “I beg your pardon?”
“It figures you’d be just as difficult as him,” she says, spinning around to snatch up her helmet before grabbing his arm and yanking him back onto the street. “You should have told him when you got here, he— Corellian Hells, is this why he’s been disappearing off into Hutt Space?”
Something in the Force tells Obi-Wan to hold his tongue, to let Bo-Katan guide him through the market as quickly as the crowds allow — some citizens even bounce out of their way once they get a good look at Bo-Katan. Obi-Wan’s been a Shadow too long to get lost even in a busy city like this, but he still has to concentrate to memorise the path she takes him, out of duracrete into clay and wood buildings that bake under the sun and whisper history far more alive than Obi-Wan is used to.
She kicks open the door to an ancient-looking cantina that Obi-Wan doesn’t have time to read the name of before Bo-Katan is dragging him bodily inside and shouting over the din, “Mand’alor! I’ve got your sur’gaankar!”
Something like terror lodges in Obi-Wan’s throat as every commando in the cantina freezes and stops talking all at once, staring at them in the sunlit doorway like the second coming of the Sith. Then all heads snap just as quickly towards a table near the back — all except one man lounging at the table who still stares at Obi-Wan with more than surprise, and this is where Obi-Wan’s entire mission falls apart. This is where every commando realises Obi-Wan isn’t whoever Bo-Katan seems to think he is, this is where they call his bluff and he blows his entire cover, and Quinlan is going to make dick jokes at his funeral.
Bo-Katan smirks and marches right for the man, pulling a shell-shocked Obi-Wan through the cantina until she releases him to lean over the man’s table— the Mand’alor’s table. Obi-Wan wonders if he can somehow make it out one of the windows before anyone grabs him.
“So, ori’vod,” Bo-Katan drawls, clearly far from meaning it affectionately, “when were you gonna tell the rest of the Haat’ade that you’d already found your soulmark, hm?”
Ohh, and there goes Obi-Wan’s breathing.
This “ori’vod” blinks, first at Bo-Katan, and then at Obi-Wan, and he just had to be attractive, didn’t he. The Force couldn’t give Obi-Wan one break and make him someone, anyone, that didn’t shine quite like he does in the low-light?
“I have never seen this man before in my life.”
Obi-Wan lets out his breath, mentally preparing himself for the whole cantina to descend on him.
But Bo-Katan just stares back at the Mand’alor and, Obi-Wan looking around at other commandos, everyone seems to be in disbelief of him, and not— not Obi-Wan. Which is just a strange cherry to top his already frankly ridiculous day, especially when Bo-Katan leans closer to her Mand’alor to squint at him.
“So he’s just some other ‘Vhett’, then?”
  Obi-Wan licks his lips. “Bo—”
“No, no, I wanna hear what excuse he tries to come up with when we can all feel it.”
Embarrassment prickles Obi-Wan’s neck, and feels even less in control than he had a moment ago; he doesn’t remember learning anything about commandos being able to feel things about their leader, but to be fair, he can’t remember much of any of his lessons right now.
A Mando in gold armour across the table from Jango takes off their helmet, revealing a Rattataki that stares him down with a meaning far deeper than Obi-Wan is privy to just then.
“Mand’alor,” they say, tapping their first knuckle over the left side of their chest, and Obi-Wan’s neck prickles again.
And then every commando in the cantina does the same, tapping the chest of their beskar’gam and nodding towards Jango, as if one entity, as if they had rehearsed it; the prickle turns to a burn, Obi-Wan darting a hand up to his throat as something shifts in the Force.
Bo-Katan finally seems to be catching on that they truly don’t know each other, but instead of angry, she perks up and yanks Obi-Wan closer to the table. “He’s from Odos, he has no idea what’s going on,” she says as Obi-Wan stumbles over his own feet. “Congrats, Mand’alor, I found your sur’gaankar for you.”
Obi-Wan winces before he allows himself to finally meet Jango’s gaze, and doesn’t know what to make of what he finds: a curious sort of trust, disbelief but acceptance, and it’s only when Jango gets to his feet that Obi-Wan realises no one had said his name. That the wheat fronds over his collarbones and around his neck have never bothered him before.
That he’s probably going to have to call Quinlan to finish the job in Sundari.
Mando’a: sur’gaankar — “soulmate”, lit. “picture heart” from sur’gaan “picture” and kar’ta “heart” kih’vod —”little sibling” (’vod’ most often used in fandom as “brother”; ‘kih’ intentionally used instead of ‘ika’) Ka’ra — an ancient Mandalorian story, ruling council of fallen kings, “stars” beskad — traditional Mandalorian curved saber made of beskar. burc’ya — friend (also used ironically or sarcastically) Haat’ade — lit. “true child of Mandalore”, True Mandalorians (slang shortened to Haat'ad/e)  Mand’alor — “Sole ruler”, contended ruler of Mandalore. Resol’nare — “Six Actions”, the six tenets guiding Mando life ‘lek — “yeah”, short for elek, or “yes” utreekov — “idiot,” “fool,” lit. “empty head” ori’vod — “big brother”, either older sibling or a special friend (used here ironically) beskar’gam — Armour made of beskar, “Mandalorian Iron” that was actually probably a steel alloy

A/N: I haven’t written a fic since I was about 13. It may take a while for my writing to even begin to resemble something a human being would say lmao.
---
Safe to say, fighting for his life had not been on Obi-Wan’s itinerary when he woke up that morning.
It was meant to be a simple recon assignment for him and his Master, figuring out how and why the people of a small but powerful planet seemed to be gathering military resources at a speed unreasonable for peacetime. Important, yes, but easy enough - in, observe, a little bit of digging if needed, and back out by day’s end.
Instead, both him and Master Qui-Gon had sensed a dark presence on the planet upon landing. Whether this was just the natural existence of the Gardinoan population was arguable, as his own Master had remarked that he had not felt such unease from the Force in a long time, and that it was unlikely that the Council would have sent the pair of them alone to a planet with such a … festering darkness. In any case, they almost immediately found themselves at the wrong end of a blaster and being guided to a prison cell by three thinly necked and heavily armoured Gardinoans.
Hours had passed since that first aggression, with his Master being dragged off to be questioned somewhere else. Qui-Gon was determined, Obi-Wan knew, not to get out of the situation using the Force if it could be avoided; ‘cooperation is the key in situations like these’, he had told his imprisoned padawan before being moved, ‘and if we can convince them to work alongside us now, they’ll be much more favourable towards us in the future.’
If Obi-Wan was being quite frank with himself, he didn’t particularly care about the future. Stuck in a dingy and cold prison cell, he was more concerned with the present - especially as it involved what he was fairly sure was a Sith, strolling into the room containing his cell alongside his jailors. At a cursory glance, the figure did not scream Sith - a cloaked individual with a half mask covering the bottom half of their face was not entirely out of place around most parts, afterall, and the force aura around them did not seem disturbed or even that different from Obi-Wan’s own. However Obi-Wan was not one for simple cursory glances when his life was at stake - given the sheathed lightsaber that could be glimpsed between the robe’s folds, and the yellow tinged eyes of a humanoid woman poking out between their half mask and hood, Obi-Wan knew this was no longer a simple recon assignment.
The woman turned to the Gardinoan escorting her, and murmured for them to leave them. The Gardinoan - after turning towards Obi-Wan as if to make sure that the padawan was still in the cell - nodded, and scuttered away from the woman, the door to the room clicking shut behind him and a heavy silence filling the space left behind.
Obi-Wan remained still within his cell, waiting for the cloaked woman to speak, or even act. Instead, she watched him from beneath her hood, eyes stuck to Obi-Wan’s face as if she was judging a piece of work and found it lacking. The silence stretched into the minutes, and Obi-Wan felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand - should he talk? Should he question her? If he talked first could he get the upper hand, convince her play her hand or let him out, maybe even -
“No, not what I expected at all.” The woman said, words cutting into the silence - and it wasn’t the voice of an old woman, or a monster, but of a young woman - his age, or even younger maybe. Someone that could hopefully be bested by a padawan, if needs be … although Obi-Wan was grateful for the bars that surrounded his cell, for the little protection they offered from the Sith on the other side.
Fighting the urge to reach for his lightsaber, sheathed at his own waist - it was time to stall.
“Oh really? Well, I do hate to disappoint. Who exactly were you expecting?”
A scoff, quiet and as full of humour as it was of mockery.
Yellow eyes ran quickly across his face, before the woman reached up, sweeping her hood back and pulling her half mask down in quick succession so that, Obi-Wan imagined, he could see the disappointment on her face. Which, of course, was there, but she was …. not what he expected either.
Force users were not creatures from children’s tales, he knew. Whether dark or light, a force user could come from any planet, look like any of the millions of the universe’s designs, and he had seen before the mask’s removal her eyes, and that she was shaped in a similar enough way to any of the many humanoid species that littered every space between stars, but still. He had imagined, beneath the mask - as far as he had gone to imagine her at all - a monster. Like he imagined all the Sith. Not hideous, not grotesque, but evil. Visibly evil, because if her force aura wasn’t going to mark an obvious and unbridgeable difference between them, surely something should.
But no.
She was just … an attractive woman. A very attractive woman.
(The type of woman, perhaps, in a different universe, where Obi-Wan was not good and she was not evil, or he was not beholden to the Jedi Code, or in a universe where Jedi did not exist at all - as terrible as that would be, of course - that he might ask her out for a drink. Or perhaps to a picnic underneath the stars on Naboo. Maybe they could have grown up together as children.)
Why could the day not have gone as planned?
What was she staring at now?
Oh. He hadn’t heard a word she’d just said, and by the looks of it - by how she had rolled her eyes and recovered her face, by how her back was turning and she was beginning to walk towards the shut door - she wasn’t planning on staying much longer.
Qui-Gon was going to kill him if he let a Sith walk away from him without any information. He needed something, anything, that they could tell the Council, something important -
“Can I at least get your name?”
Dammit. What was wrong with him?
The woman paused at the door, laughing quietly as she turned back to face him without taking a step closer.
“No, you cannot. What you can have, Jedi, is a secret - would you like it?”
Padawan. I am not a Jedi yet.
But Obi-Wan nodded, words kept pressed down in his throat, crawling around like snakes. The woman seemed pleased at his answer, taking a few steps closer and beckoning him to the bars that separated them - and almost subconsciously, Obi-Wan found himself at the edge of his cell, leaning against the cold metal and watching her.
“Well, Master, you’re very lucky - and please understand, I am not in the business of telling Jedi scum my secrets, but neither am I in the business of leaving Jedi unharmed after being in my presence. So, Jedi … I’m sure you’re honoured to know that I have given you the gift of being my first, and hopefully only.”
Oh.
She was leaving him alive.
(But that means she really was here to kill someone who wasn’t him, she wasn’t here for Obi-Wan at all - his master, Qui-Gon, would she go to him next? Would Obi-Wan have to stand here as she plunged her lightsaber through his chest, or across his neck - he had to get out, he had to find Qui-Gon, he needed to get them out of this place -
But the woman was already leaving, she was already back at the door, and it was already open, she was already stepping out, but Qui-Gon - )
“I can feel the fear rolling off you, Jedi. You might want to work on that.”
And with the last words spoken over her shoulder towards him, she was gone.
What was he going to do?
- - -
What he was going to do, in the end, was have what may have been a small panic attack as he remained in his cell for another hour.
His lightsaber couldn’t free him from the cell - the bars, whatever they were made of, seemed to absorb the energy.
He couldn’t persuade anyone to let him out - not a soul had graced his presence since the woman’s exit, leaving him with nothing but her ghost and the fear and the images.
(The woman, unmasked and beautiful and terrible. Qui-Gon in a cell of his own, weaponless and restricted, and her over him, and her lightsaber in hand, and would Qui-Gon be able to fight her off? Surely Qui-Gon would fight, and surely Qui-Gon would win, he always won, but what if he didn’t? What if he died there, or died trying to escape her, dead on the floor like an animal or worse, his corpse taken by the woman like a trophy back to wherever she had emerged from. Would Obi-Wan ever leave, would he ever become a Jedi, could he without Qui-Gon, and - )
Breathe. Fear is the path to the dark side. Breathe. Fear leads to anger. Breathe. Anger leads to hate. Breathe. Hate leads to suffering. Breathe.
Qui-Gon is going to be fine. She may not even be here from him, Obi-Wan reminded himself. And realistically, she can’t have been - she clearly did not recognise him as a padawan, and if she had been here for Qui-Gon and known the man was nearby, she would surely have taunted Obi-Wan with whatever her plans were, knowing that the younger man would be able to do nothing about it.
But what if -
Safe to say, it was a very long hour until his Master walked back into the room, alongside one of Gardinoan jailors from earlier, looking unharmed and only mildly annoyed.
Qui-Gon nodded towards his padawan: are you okay? Unhurt?
A smile, small and quick, back.
A sigh of relief from the older man, and a look towards the Gardinoan.
“Now that you have your answers, can my padawan be released?”
The Gardinoan - as thinly necked and heavily armed as ever, but now with a distinct look of embarrassment on his face, pale skin flushed and gaze almost constantly lowered - nodded quickly at the Jedi Master, hands quickly finding the keys to open the cell’s door and free the younger man.
(And Obi-Wan really did need to do some digging into exactly what the bars were made of, when they were free and away from the whole damn planet.)
Once free of the cell Obi-Wan walked quickly up to his mentor, and the two of them turned and left the room, leaving the Gardinoan behind them with their longer strides. With neither of them particularly looking forward to remaining amongst the people that had imprisoned them - and for no reason, at that - Obi-Wan was not surprised to see the Jedi lead him back towards the hanger in which their ship had originally landed.
“What in the world was that, Master?”
Qui-Gon sighed, resting a hand on Obi-Wan’s shoulder.
“Unbelievably, mistaken identity - apparently, the two of us resemble a pair of bounty hunters some of the locals had a fair bit of issue with a few years ago. You would think that given we are very clearly Jedi here on Jedi Council business,” he spoke louder now, with the Gardinoan that still trailed a distance behind the pair able to hear him if their now redder cheeks were any indication, “a few moments questioning would be enough to convince them that we are not two low-rate rogues, but alas. Apparently not.” Qui-Gon dropped his voice again, concern colouring his words. “How were you, young one? Nothing too unpleasant?”
Well, Master. There was, or at least I’m fairly sure there was, a Sith in the room. Her force aura was barely any different than yours, or Master Windu’s, or mine own, and she was quite beautiful, and she didn’t kill me, but a Sith nonetheless, I think. I barely listened to a word she said, and I hadn’t even thought to try and question her until she was halfway out the door, but -
No chance.
“No, Master. I was left alone for the most part, anyway, aside from someone who came in to watch me for a while. I - I am just glad you are well. I was worried for you.”
At Qui-Gon’s weary smile at Obi-Wan’s barely half truth, the padawan’s heart seemed to stutter.
What in the world had he just done.

What got you into Star Wars?
I have been around for a while, but more a fan to support my daughter and to celebrate female representation in the series - Rey is awesome and it is really hard to find such a awesome kick ass female character. But what made me obsessed... when that would be Adam Driver, I cannot tell a lie.
What made you a Reylo? Lightbulb moment!
When during the first force bond scene Kylo was framed in a way that hit me as to how gosh darn attractive he is. I thought that was odd... so I went to the internet and found a whole new world of thirsting. I cannot believe how blind I was to it before then.

The Thoughts and Reflections of Someone New to Reylo and the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
This is a really, really long post and contains spoilers.
Please be polite and respectful if you choose to comment and / or reblog.
Ok, so before I get too heavy discussing my thoughts and reflections there are a few things I want to make absolutely clear.
- People can ship whoever they want.  And it is perfectly fine for people to disagree and have differing tastes and opinions.  Obviously some ships are better supported by canon than others.  And there are shipping relationships that are toxic, but people ship it anyway.  I think a great non-Star Wars example is Harley Quinn and Joker.
- I have delved deep enough into the reylo tag and other related tags to get the sense that anti-reylo are claiming a moral high ground.  “As a ship reylo is wrong and therefore anyone who ships reylo is a horrible person.”  And my simple rebuttal to this is--no, that’s not how this works.  If someone ships reylo this by itself is not sufficient evidence that someone is a horrible person.
- Based on everything I have read about TROS Ben Solo’s story arc and character development could have been so much more than what it was on screen in TROS.
- Having said that a lot of other characters were short changed by whoever was pulling the strings and making the decisions: Rose Tico, Poe Dameron, Finn and Rey and arguably Leia, Luke and Han were short changed by some of the decisions made in TROS and earlier in TLJ and TFA.
- Being part of a fandom should be fun, so can we all agree to chill out, relax and be civil?
Moving on...now that hopefully I have cleared up any preconceived assumptions.
I am relatively new to reylo and the sequel trilogies.
The first time I watched The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi was only a few weeks ago.  Some of the cable channels have been doing Star Wars marathons to get people pumped and nostalgic to pay for a movie ticket to The Rise of Skywalker.
One of the cable channels was doing yet another Star Wars marathon last night, so I again sat down to watch The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but this time I watched the films with more awareness of the various critiques, criticisms and elements that have been deemed problematic.
I also went to the trouble of jotting down some notes.
This post is kinda all over the place, but I am going to go over my notes and observations and a main topic I want to look at is:
How Rey’s relationships and interactions with Finn and Kylo Ren differ and what sort of implications does this have.
Since stepping my toe into the reylo tags and other related tags I have NOT been able to fully articulate where I stand on whether reylo is toxic, Kylo Ren / Ben Solo is abusive, whether Kylo Ren / Ben Solo is worthy of redemption and to what degree Kylo / Ben being abused and manipulated excuses his actions.
I have to confess that the more parallels and similarities I see between Kylo Ren and Anakin / Darth Vader the more uneasy I feel about shipping reylo.
Regardless of my opinion people are free to do what they want.  If shipping reylo makes you happy, who am I too badger you into doing otherwise?
Me, writing out this long post is an attempt to flush out my thoughts at the present.
Watching the movies again I was struck by how different Rey’s interactions were with Finn and Kylo Ren.  There is a sequence in The Force Awakens between Rey and Finn that reminds me of the throne room sequence between Kylo Ren and Rey when Kylo offers his hand and asks her to rule beside him.  ((Please pardon me for paraphrasing and not having all the lines of dialogue memorized.))
Rey and Finn
At Maz’s place when Han, Rey and Finn are trying to arrange transport for BB8 to the resistance and / or get another ship to avoid detection by the First Order.
Maz looks into Finn’s eyes and remarks that he looks like someone who wants to run away.  Maz tells Finn that there is a way out.  That there are some beings that will arrange transit to the outer rim and exchange for work.
Finn approaches the beings and tells them not to leave without him.
Rey is frustrated by this.  How can he just leave?  What about BB8?  What about the resistance?  I believe this is when Finn comes clean that he is not actually with the resistance.  That he is a stormtrooper and he is not going back to the First Order and wants to stay as far away from them as possible.
Finn asks Rey to come with him.  To join him.  Rey says no.  And I believe Finn tells Rey to take care of herself.
There are no hurt feelings on Finn’s part.  He doesn’t try to persuade or manipulate her to change her mind.  He simply wishes that she takes care of herself.
Here are a few other bullet point items I want to highlight.
- Kylo Ren force pushing Rey into a tree and Finn coming to her aid and kneeling beside her reminds me of Anakin choking out Padme on Mustafar and Obi-Wan Kenobi going to Padme.
- Finn’s main motivation for going to Starkiller base was to rescue Rey.
- Rey clutches & hugs an unconscious Finn who fought and lost to Kylo Ren.
- After Starkiller base is blown up and Rey, Finn and Chewbacca are in transit.  Rey plants a kiss on Finn’s forehead as he lies unconscious.
- When Finn wakes up in The Last Jedi the first thing he says is, “Where is Rey?“
- Finn’s motivation for trying to get away in an escape pod is basically keep Rey safe.  Finn thinks the fleet is doomed.  If Finn can to an escape pod and reach safety, Rey will be able to find him and she will be safe.
- I want to say that there is another time that Rey hugs Finn.  Maybe this is when Han, Finn and Rey first find each other on Starkiller?
Finn is not a perfect person.  He does lie to Rey about being part of the resistance.  In terms of being an honorable, moral and ethical person I think it is quite clear Finn is a better person than Kylo Ren / Ben Solo.
But in real life and in fiction people can be attracted to and fall in love with horrible people.  ((I suppose right here my own words are a damning statement against reylo.))
Some observations I made from watching The Last Jedi
- When Kylo Ren and Rey have their first force skype call.  Kylo’s first reaction is confusion.  And his second reaction is to reach out with the force to try to manipulate Rey to bring Luke Skywalker to him.
- When Rey pushes Kylo Ren to explain why he killed his father, Han Solo--I find it curious that Kylo deflects the question and starts talking about Rey’s parents and how they threw her away.  Given the plot twist in TROS this now makes Kylo look like a manipulator and a liar.  In the best case scenario Kylo was telling a version of the truth that is incomplete.  I suppose in a way Kylo does indirectly answer Rey’s question by saying, “Let the past die.  Kill it if you have to.  That’s the only way to become what you are meant to be.“  This could be read as manipulative and an attempt to push Rey to the dark side by killing Luke.
- I’m still not sure what to make of the 2nd force bond scene.  The connection is terminated and Kylo Ren is wiping his face with a gloved hand and we see...water?  Kylo Ren’s tears on his glove?  There is a wave of water crashing against some rocks in front of Rey just before Kylo is seen wiping his face.
- When an unconscious Kylo Ren wakes up in the throne room.  It is just Kylo Ren and Hux.  It’s quick, but it looks like Hux reaches into his coat to draw a weapon and shoot Kylo Ren.
- What did Rey tell Chewbacca to tell Finn?  I’m sure someone knows, but I just need to do some more digging online.
- Kylo Ren vs Luke Skywalker.  Near the very end of the fight Kylo Ren says, “I’ll destroy her [Rey] and you and all of it.“
- Overall I’m just surprised how often Rey is brought to tears throughout these movies.  It’s understandable because of what she is going through and what she has been through.  Someone must have counted how many times Rey cries and how many times it was with X or Y character and what they were talking about.
Rey and Kylo Ren: The Throne Room
Ok, so let’s sum up the events leading up to Kylo Ren’s proposal.
Rey is brought before Snoke who tortures her for information about Skywalker.
When Snoke gets the information he wants AND it becomes clear that Rey is a true Jedi who will not serve him, Snoke then orders Kylo Ren to kill Rey.
Kylo Ren spares Rey and kills Snoke.
Kylo Ren and Rey fight off the guards together.
Kylo gives his speech about letting old things die.  What stands out to me is Kylo does NOT specifically mention the First Order.  Snoke, Luke Skywalker, the Sith, the Jedi, the resistance all need to die, but not the First Order.
Rey pleads with Ben not to do this.  Not to go down this path.  Which is reminiscent of what Padme said to Anakin on Mustafar.
Kylo / Ben says, “You’re still holding on!  Let go!”  ((Holding onto what exactly?  The resistance?  Hope?  The Jedi path?  The light side of the force?))  And once again Kylo / Ben talks about Rey’s parentage.
“You’re nothing, but not to me.  Please.”  For a while I have interpreted this as Kylo Ren / Ben Solo being honest and blunt to a fault, but seeing and listening to this again in it’s full context this does read as Kylo Ren being manipulative. Breaking Rey down, she comes from nothing, she is nothing, she has no place in this, but hey why don’t you join me and have a seat right next to me on the winning side.
Final Thoughts:
- At the very least Kylo Ren’s conduct and behavior are red flags.  Regardless of the extent that Kylo Ren was manipulated and abused his behavior and his interactions with Rey in the TFA and TLJ are troubling to say the least.  There does come a point when someone cannot use the excuse of being abused to justify their abusive behavior.  “Ok, so you were abused and learned some bad habits and coping mechanisms, but here is the thing your actions are causing real harm to another person and that is not cool.”  It’s hard and it’s difficult to change those habits and people will slip up on the road to recovery.  I think we also need to recognize the complication that Rey and Kylo Ren are at war on opposite sides.
- I think there was descent chemistry and a connection between Rey and Finn, but I feel like that gets de-railed at the end of TLJ when Finn is tending to Rose and Rey is interacting with Leia.
- I think Rey and Finn is a lot less problematic than Rey and Kylo Ren / Ben Solo.  Just compare the throne room scene to the interaction between Finn and Rey at Maz’s place.
- Do I still ship reylo?  Here is how I will answer the question for now.  As flawed as Kylo Ren / Ben Solo is I do like him and find him to be a character I can relate to alongside Rey.  I have not seen TROS in theaters and don’t think I will waste my money going to see it.
I would have LOVED to see a happy ending for Ben Solo instead of a variant of Darth Vader’s redemption and death.  This has already been done, why not do something different?  Isn’t this ending more hopeful?  You know instead of Han, Luke, Leia dying in vain to save Ben.
I would have LOVED if the people making TROS put more careful thought and consideration into Ben’s story arc and character development.
Fitting with the theme of: finding the balance, not everything is black and white, there are a lot of grey areas / ambiguity, etc.
I would have been fine with some sort of ending where Ben faces some sort of punishment for his crimes and he is neither condemned to death or is completely pardoned without consequences.
I am very curious to know what political scientists and psychologists would say about sentencing someone like Kylo Ren / Ben Solo for war crimes.  In the comics that have been released so far it seems like Ben Solo is much younger when he is turned to the dark side and taken in by the First Order.  I think in TROS it’s revealed that Ben’s current age is 30 and he was 23 when he joined Snoke and the First Order.  At age 23 Ben Solo is considered an adult, he is not a child soldier.  “But he was being manipulated before he was even born.“  I hear you...unfortunately I don’t know how or if that would factor into Ben Solo’s being charged with war crimes.
Right now, I am in favor of ignoring the mess that is TROS and replacing it with fanfiction where Rey and Ben Solo are able to live a health and happy life.  And perhaps some day they will rebuild a new Jedi order that strives to accept and learn from the mistakes of the past.
- Is Kylo Ren / Ben Solo worthy of redemption?  I think in order to answer this question we need to ask, what does it mean to be redeemed?  What does someone have to do in order to be redeemed or atone for their wrong doing?
I think the short answer is it’s complicated and everyone has different opinions.  Some people are probably of the opinion that Kylo Ren / Ben Solo is beyond redemption.  There is nothing he can do.  He can never do enough to make up for what he has done.
I think the more complicated answer is it’s a long process and not everyone will forgive you--heck maybe no one will forgive you.
And whether you are punished or not punished is an entirely different matter.
There are things Kylo Ren / Ben Solo has done that he can never take back.  Kylo Ren cannot bring Han Solo back from the dead or any of the hundreds or thousands of people he has cut down.  The fact Kylo Ren has murdered even one person is probably reason enough in the eyes of some people for why he can never be redeemed.
Kylo Ren / Ben Solo turned toward the light and toward Rey.  In my opinion I think this action could be considered an act of repentance, but falls short of redeeming / atoning for all his past sins.  I think full redemption / atonement is a much more lengthier process.
Ultimately, I think this is a question worth pondering for ourselves.

A neutron star merger is a type of stellar collision. When two neutron stars orbit each other closely, they spiral inward as time passes due to gravitational radiation. When the two neutron stars meet, their merger leads to the formation of either a more massive neutron star, or a black hole. In the aftermath of Order 66, Anakin Skywalker's miraculous survival after his confrontation with the new Sith Apprentice Darth Vader ignites a sparkle of hope in the remaining Jedi, in the fledgling rebellion and, above all, in his former Master, who had thought he had lost everything to darkness. But darkness is generous, and it is patient. [Title changed from "This time we'll fall together"]

Quiobi, no.1 with Qui-Gon as a Sith and Obi-Wan as a Jedi?
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s world is black and white.
There is good and there is evil.
He is a Jedi and therefore he is good.
Raised as the last Padawan Learner to the venerable Grand Master of the Order, Obi-Wan has strived all his life to be the perfect Jedi, the epitome of the light. He has ruthlessly chased out fear and anger from his heart, has excised all that would tempt him down a darker path shaded in charcoal, ebony, and onyx. He knows the shades of ivory that mark the path of the truly righteous like the back of his hand.
He is an example to the Order, to those initiates who feel they will never be chosen, encouragement to those Knights who fear that perfection is out of their grasp, and a subtle reminder to masters to think twice about their preconceived notions.
If Obi-Wan Kenobi can become a paragon of light, the finest of his generation, Master Yoda’s true heir, then anything is possible.
Through the light all things are possible.
Except… that is all Obi-Wan can see.
There is no color in his world, no vibrant blues, no ruddy crimson or a delicate yellow. The world around him is as black and white as the lessons handed down to him from a grandmaster who has evolved beyond caring about the color of a flower or the particular shade of the sunset.
After 800 years of shades of grey, Yoda needs no gaudy, saturated rainbow to tell him that sunlight dappled through the leaves of a sweet oak in the Room of a Thousand Fountains is beautiful. He simply accepts the world that he sees as it is. He does not need color nor does he want it.
“A Jedi craves not these things, Obi-Wan,” Yoda tells him and Obi-Wan does his best to listen to his master’s wisdom, to tell himself that there is beauty in the shift from radiant white to ecru to charcoal and the inky wash of night time.
It works for the most part.
There are stories on the holonet, simple minded vapid tales of nonsense about soulmates and the gift of colors and Obi-Wan would pay them no mind if his friends didn't find them so hilarious. Luminara giggles at the florid language, while Quinlan cackles and makes bad jokes about rutting.
Even Padme, a younger Padawan Obi-Wan mentored in his final years as a Senior Padawan, enjoys watching them, her eyes lighting up as the soulmates, now united, take their first view of the world around them. They are exported to another plane and the show inevitably ends on a long and lingering kiss.
Obi-Wan thinks that's all a bunch of nonsense and would tell his friends so if he didn't know it would hurt their feelings.
“There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel loved,” Quinlan explains to Obi-Wan one night on a mission assigned to the two of them. “I know that old troll has your brains scrambled so that all you can do is eat, sleep and breathe the Code but I think he's wrong. We all want to feel loved, to feel like we’re a part of something bigger than ourselves.”
“What is bigger than the Order?” Obi-Wan asks gazing up at the distant stars, sparkling bits of light in the depth of a black void. “What is bigger than the Force?”
Quinlan shrugs. “I don't know. Love? Maybe that's all the Force is. Love. And when you meet the right person it can help you experience the Force in a whole new way.”
“I do not need a romantic partner to be complete, Quinlan,” Obi-Wan sniffs and Quinlan lets the subject drop and when Quinlan’s world explodes in color six months later, he does not mention it to Obi-Wan. But he does mourn the fact that his friend will never know that his eyes are blue, with hints of grey, that his hair has strands of copper mixed with honeyed wheat.
Time passes and the light becomes harder to find and Obi-Wan tries to shine brighter, to be better, to hold up a candle against the encroaching darkness. There is more now than ever before. Ink washes of ash and soot where there should only be pure, pristine white. The fog of war rises with rumors of darksiders, of actual Sith, drifting through the gauzy, hazy peace of the Jedi Temple.
Obi-Wan has never met them but his world is black and white, good and evil.
They are Sith and so they are evil.
The first hints are missions that go awry, ones where knights don’t come back, or come back grievously injured, their blood staining dove-grey robes black. There are reports of beings dressed in black with gleaming, horrible stars for eyes. Two of them, they say, a master and an apprentice.
The galaxy teeters on the edge of something, struggling to stay upright, to stay in the light, to resist the pull of the dark.
And then something snaps: an assassination attempt, an illegal seizure of territory, a starship blown up in “neutral” territory. It doesn’t matter what the exact act is.
It never does.
War sweeps through the galaxy and the Jedi are called to defend civilization, to defend democracy and to defend the light, and Obi-Wan Kenobi is on the front line.
His men tell him their color is yellow, like a life-giving sun. The other brigades and legions are a rainbow of colors that are lost on him.
What do the colors matter if those brave souls all end up the same, dead on the battlefield?
It doesn’t matter that fire is red-gold and white hot or that Padme’s 501st is painted blue like the Naboo sky at high noon.
What does any of it matter when there are Sith out there and the darkness is growing stronger?
And then one day, Padme finds Obi-Wan meditating in his room, and she is crying.
“I saw him! I saw him on the field!” she sobs into Obi-Wan, into the safe haven of her brother Jedi’s arms. “I saw him and… and… his eyes… I couldn’t look away.”
Obi-Wan nods, quiet, caring and listening. He has heard the Sith have arresting eyes, that it is like looking into the heart of a dying star. He has heard they are conventionally attractive but he has yet to meet either Master or Apprentice.
“Which one? The older or the younger?” he asks, his voice soft in the pale grey of the early morning light. Padme hurried to him as soon as her ship docked back in the orbital shipyards.
She manages to stammer out that she saw the younger, that he was tall and wild and that he looked straight at her.
“And… Obi-Wan, I… I… Oh I don’t know how to say it!” Padme curses, tears spilling anew. “His eyes! I saw them! And they… they… they were gold.”
For a moment, Obi-Wan is struck dumb, his mouth works but his mind reels, trying to make sense of this, trying to fit this very dark shade of grey into his black-and-white world.
Padme is good. Padme is a Jedi.
Padme is made of pure light.
She would never have a Sith for a soulmate.
And yet, she does.
“His hair is brown and their robes are black, like soot or scoring, and his blade is red and I know what red is and I don’t know what to do!” Padme sobs and Obi-Wan holds her in place, promises her it will all be alright and that they will find a way through this. He is her elder brother, her friend and confidant. He won’t tell a soul.
Who would believe him?
But as worried as he is for Padme, there is a part of him that is jealous, that silently burns with spite. She now knows that her eyes are brown, her lips are pink and her robe is the soft fawn of spring trees. Padme knows that there is another out there, one whose existence gives her life meaning and fills up an empty hole within her.
She finds out later that his name is Vader, well, Anakin and he loves her, has become obsessed with her. Padme loves him too, is just as obsessed, and they chase each other across the galaxy, fighting to win, to capture and to tame the other.
But the hole in Obi-Wan stays empty and his world stays black and white.
“Proud of you, am I,” Yoda confesses to Obi-Wan, late one night. “Difficult this war is, but shine like a beacon you do. The best of us, you have become, my Padawan.”
“Thank you, Master,” Obi-Wan replies but the words feel like ash in his mouth.
The world grows darker with each engagement, with battles lost and won. Padme vows that next time she will catch Vader and bring him to justice and Vader gives him messages for Padme that next time he won’t let her go.
Obi-Wan wonders if the two are incapable of working a comm but he dutifully delivers the messages.
He tells himself he is not jealous, that he is not lonely.
He is a Jedi and he is good.
He is wreathed in light.
Then comes Geonosis and battle to destroy the droid-making abilities of the Geonosians. Obi-Wan leads his 212th attack battalion from the ground, supported by the 501st and others. They make their way through seemingly endless waves of droids to come upon the target, a tall, organic spire carved from sandstone by the insect creatures. It is a hive and a bunker.
And they will hit it with everything they’ve got.
Obi-Wan leads a company in with him, Luminara leads the artillery bombardment from behind and Padme and her squads try to out-fly Vader in the sky. It is a dangerous battle, pitched between the light and the dark.
Obi-Wan can feel the galaxy hold its breath.
And then he sees him, the Master, the tall imposing figure he has somehow not seen until this day.
At first Obi-Wan thinks there’s something wrong with his eyes because the man cutting through Master Mundi’s troops is not dark so much as his aura is tinged with red. Obi-Wan shakes his head and scrubs at his eyes, assuming that his mind is playing tricks on him, that he cannot possibly be seeing red.
He doesn’t know what red is.
But the Sith moves with surprising speed and grace through the battle, mowing down clones and droids alike as they get in his path. His skin is flushed and his hair is warmer than grey but not black, what Obi-Wan suddenly realizes is brown.
And his eyes.
His eyes are gold rimmed in red.
Obi-Wan’s mind whirls as the world around him explodes in color, as blue practically assaults his senses from above and the sudden onslaught of yellow demands to be noticed, to be seen. The sandstone hive-bunker is a rusty, ruddy umber and the blade of his saber is azure.
And the Sith’s eyes are golden and his hair is brown with streaks of grey and he is looking straight at Obi-Wan.
There are only a few meters between them and in the chaos of battle, no one stops the Sith who storms over to Obi-Wan, his predator eyes narrowed and the line of his jaw hard in spite of the beard that fails to soften it.
“And who are you, Jedi?” the taller man asks, looking over Obi-Wan’s face as if looking for a key to unlock the mystery that has just been presented to him. “I’ve not seen you before.”
And to his credit, Obi-Wan attacks because he is a Jedi and he is good.
But his soulmate is a Sith.
One day Obi-Wan will learn his true name, whisper it in a moment of abandon and passion when he cannot fight it any longer, when their colors are too much, too much gold and blue, the red of soft lips and warmth of an indigo-edged night.
His name is Qui-Gon Jinn, and now Obi-Wan Kenobi’s world is full of color.

I'm so late but I sure hope you're still doing that ask meme because if you are I'm giving you Hannibal and Star Wars. Because I know you too well and I know you'd be waiting ;D - tattlecrimc
YESSSSSSS EDEN BLESS U (i’m assuming you mean this one bc that’s the only one i’ve reblogged recently)
i will ramble horribly on the hannibal one and i’m very sorry about it so i’ll leave that for last so i can put it under a read more
i should probably warn u that the only movie fresh in my memory is the force awakens so all of this is gonna be answered through a v tfa-heavy lens but ok
star wars
three favourite male characters: poe dameron, kylo ren & general hux (DON’T KILL ME i know kylo & hux are awful, the fandom paired w/ my pre-existing love for domhnall gleeson did this to me and i am v ashamed). finn, han solo, bodhi rook, cassian andor, chirrut imwe & luke skywalker are also v dear to me. listen i just have a lot of love to givethree favourite female characters: jessika pava (i’d better see So Much of her in ep8), phasma & padme amidala. & also rey! ‘Needs More Girls’ is my opinion on most franchises but especially star warsfavourite pairing(s): finn/poe, kylo/hux, rey/jessika & han/luke! i also like obi-wan/anakin in the sense that i don’t actively go looking for stuff abt it but when i do see it on my dash my heart does a lil “!!”notp(s): r*ylo is like one of the only ships on my blacklist so that probably tells u something. i’m also p Ew about rey with any of the villains, so that also rules out rey/hux & rey/kylo/hux which i see way too often all over the place. also you wouldn’t think snoke/kylo would be a thing but i’ve seen fics & i’ve seen art and i’ve like cried every single time, experiencing that was my tragic backstory and now i’m a jaded & cynical anti-hero who’s seen Too Much™least favourite character: snoke who’s like me: i’ll hesitantly say padme amidala? i saw the prequels when i was too young to be properly interested in them and i haven’t rewatched them yet so 99% of my knowledge is secondhand, but from what i’ve seen she’s the most relatable most attractive: jessika pava tbh, yet another reason behind me hoping she’s around a lot in the next movie, i am Absolutely in love alreadyfavourite moment/scene: THAT’S MY JACKET(also lowkey the whole starkiller/hosnian system scene, that was shot so impressively w/ the whole ~greatcoat blowing dramatically in wind~ and the brief reaction shot of the people on hosnian prime and the lights shooting across the sky and damn)favourite quote(s): LOTS
“so this is how liberty dies. with thunderous applause.” - padme
“if you live long enough, you see the same eyes in different people.” - maz
“mm. lost a planet, master obi-wan has. how embarrassing.” - yoda
“are you kidding me? i’m blind!” - chirrut
“there’s a problem on the horizon. …there is no horizon.” - k2-so
“so you’re with the resistance?”“obviously. yes, i am. i am with the resistance, yeah. i’m with the resistance.”“i’ve never met a resistance fighter before.”“well, this is what we look like. some of us. others look different.” - rey & finn
“lieutenant, get back to your station!”“just look! we won’t survive. even hux is gone!” - rodinon
“through the ages, i’ve seen evil take many forms: the sith. the empire. today, it is the first order.” - maz
“where is my boyfriend? […] i like that wookiee.” - maz
ok right. now for my favourite thing in the world. the show i don’t shut up about. the universe to which my heart belongs
hannibal
three favourite male characters: will graham, hannibal lecter & anthony dimmondthree favourite female characters: chiyoh, molly graham & reba mcclane (also beverly katz. and freddie lounds. and abigail hobbs. and literally every other girl)favourite pairing(s): hannibal/will, margot/alana, reba/molly, abigail/marissa & jimmy/brian are the ones i pay most attention to, but i’m honestly also down for literally any other f/f ship u can imagine from this shownotp(s): there isn’t anything i would specifically call a notp, but i’m not a huge fan of will/alana or hannibal/alana i guess? just bc as much as i love will & hannibal, alana deserves 1000x better and i lovelovelove her with margot. i also dislike mason with literally anyone for what i would hope are obvious reasons. i also tend to be kinda cringey about abigail with will or hannibal in a romantic/sexual sense bc it’s made very clear that their relationship with her is parent/child and that she’s a teenager so it feels v creepy to meleast favourite character: i like them enough as characters but i’ll say francis dolarhyde & mason verger. bc everything mason does ever makes me feel vaguely ill and my first impression of francis dolarhyde was him stretching and grunting @ his mirror in briefs w/ Glistening Muscles and i was done with That and ready to move on in under 0.00002 seconds but it just….. kept happeningwho’s most like me: peter bernardone, abigail hobbs & s1!will graham most attractive: chiyoh! i was literally Gone from the second we saw her through will’s goddamn binoculars favourite moment/scene: literally every second of dark!will i am so here for that. every moment from when he attacked freddie in the barn and then. u know. ate randall tier with hannibal, the whole ~i’ve given up good & evil for behaviourism~ conversation and the knife exchange in the kitchen. also him bringing randall’s body to hannibal in the middle of the night like some dog looking for approval wtf. and obviously him & hannibal double-teaming & killing francis in the season finale and running the fuck away together and then coming back to eat bedelia like I JUST REALLY LOVE DARK!WILLfavourite quote(s): i have SO MANY. some of them i just think are gorgeous and thought-provoking, some i like for shippy reasons or bc they were super chilling or Ominous on a rewatch/paired with later context, and some i just find straight-up hilarious
hannibal: “i’ve always found the idea of death comforting. the thought that my life could end at any moment frees me to fully appreciate the beauty and art and horror of everything this world has to offer.”
hannibal: “the essence of the worst in the human spirit is not found in the crazy sons-of-bitches. ugliness is found in the faces of the crowd.”
jack: “you remember when you decided to call hannibal?”will: “i wasn’t decided when i called him. i just called him. i deliberated while the phone rang… i decided when i heard his voice.”jack: “you told him we knew.” will: “i told him to leave, because i wanted him to run.”jack: “why?”will: “because… because he was my friend. and because i wanted to run away with him.”
hannibal: “you cannot control with respect to whom you fall in love.”
will: “i’ve never known myself as well as i know myself… when i’m with him.”
hannibal: “when the fox hears the rabbit scream, he comes a-running. but not to help. when you hear jack scream, why will you come running?”
chiyoh: “you have a taste for it now.”will: “for what?”chiyoh: “harm.”will: “do you?”chiyoh: “i was violent when it was the right thing to do. but i think you like it. […] if you don’t kill him, you’re afraid you’re going to become him.”will: “yes.”
freddie: “i’ve interviewed enough serial killers to know one when i see one. […] a very specific brand of hostility. i see it every time i look at will graham.”
gray: “there is no god.”hannibal: “well, not with that attitude.”
hannibal: “hello! i love your work.” (YOU NEED CONTEXT FOR THIS ONE BUT I LOVE IT)
guest: “it smells divine!”hannibal: “it is! i say that without ego. i don’t require conventional reinforcement.”
hannibal: “that may have been impulsive.”
hannibal: “a paradox.”alana: “freddie lounds thinks the two of you are a paradox. she sees something no one else sees.”will: “and what’s that?”alana: “that neither of you is the killer she’s writing about… but together you might be.”
will: “i’d pack my bags if i were you, bedelia. meat’s back on the menu. […] ready or not, here he comes.”
freddie: “what will understands is that if you can’t beat hannibal lecter… join him.”
hannibal: “what’s the meat? veal? pork?”will: “she was a slim and delicate pig.”hannibal: “i’ll make you lomo soltado. we’ll make it together. …you slice the ginger.” […]hannibal: “this meat is not pork.”will: “it’s long pig.” (RIDICULOUS. now they’re both making puns while eating people)
will: “is hannibal in love with me?”bedelia: “could he daily feel a stab of hunger for you and find nourishment at the very sight of you? yes. but do you ache for him?”

Star Wars EU Reviews: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Tumblr media
While I must insist on making it abundantly clear that I love all of the Star Wars films, including this one, I have to admit that Attack of the Clones is my least favourite out of all of them.
Episode II shares the same weaknesses as Episode I, but also has the added problem of lacking memorable dialogue and relying too heavily on CGI, blue screen, and digital filmmaking which all combine into making Attack of the Clones a very banal and bland piece. For instance, the new planets, Kamino and Geonosis, lack the invigorating sense of novelty that previous new planets had. Kamino is a colourless, sterile, and boring environment and Geonosis is virtually identical to Tatooine with the exception of having more rocks and having only one sun. Much of the visual effects and action sequences are stale and lifeless and betray the fact that the actors were performing in front of a blue screen with little reference to add any reality to their acting abilities. One of the worst looking scenes is where Threepio gets tossed about the Geonosian droid factory as the heavy use of CGI has become extremely dated and is hideous to look at. And honestly I can say that about a dozen other scenes in the movie. Much of the visuals in this movie are either hideous or so banal and uninteresting that they are barely memorable.
But visual gripes aside Attack of the Clones’ biggest issue is its story and characters. Anakin and Padme have absolutely no chemistry whatsoever and everything they say and do in this film feels forced, phoned in, and fake. There is not a single realistic precedent for the two of them to ever fall in love. None. She outclasses him in every way and is way out of his league. After ten years of separation in which the last time she saw him he was a 9 year old with a crush she is now an idealistic and ambitious senator while he is now little more than a monk serving the Jedi Order. When they become reacquainted she is a mature adult working her way upward in her political career and he is an immature, precocious, adolescent whiner. When Anakin is assigned to protect Padme on Naboo he is supposed to just do his job in accordance to his station as a Jedi Knight. Instead he whines to her about all his feelings about his master and how “unfairly” the Jedi treat him. It seems so inappropriate to me for Anakin to get so vocal with Padme about his personal problems when his lower station and their ten years of separation have left them with little common ground. It’s equivalent to walking into a restaurant and the waiter starts whining to you about how his dad talks to him at home. Padme has no real personal reason to care. The inappropriateness comes to a head when he suddenly tells his supposed protective charge that he needs to leave Naboo for Tatooine to find his mother. Who does he think he is anyway? George Lucas tries so hard to convince us that there is some deep connection between the two of them, but there simply isn’t. The circumstances and environment they are in just isn’t right for such a connection to take place. The reason why Han and Leia’s romance worked so well is because they spent years together building it up with subtle flirtations, rebuffs, charm, and even fights. It’s a way more realistic look at a budding romance than having Anakin pop in virtually out of no where, behave like a spoiled child with temper tantrums and constant complaining, and say really stupid lines like “I’m in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you- I can’t breath. I’m haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating… hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me…” Give me a freaking break! And don’t get me started on how Padme seems to think Anakin’s slaughtering Tusken women and children is OK. Most women would balk at that, but apparently Padme only thinks it makes Anakin a dark, mysterious, attractive bad boy. Attractive bad boys are supposed to wear black leather jackets, ride motorbikes, and say “ehhhhhh!!!” They don’t hack kids to death with a lightsaber! What is wrong with Padme??? And her confessing her love for him at the end equally comes out of nowhere and with no realistic precedent. The only people who could possibly buy this as a real romance are 8 year olds, the socially inept, and George Lucas.
What I can say positive about Episode II is that when it does get action scenes right it does a passable job. The fight between Jango Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the asteroid field is really cool and I love the use of sound effects when Jango launches the seismic charges. It is one of the few scenes in Star Wars where the music is momentarily put aside to emphasise the sound and it works effectively. The music itself is passable, but I cannot claim it as one of John Williams’ best works. This and his score for The Force Awakens are probably the blandest soundtracks I have heard for Star Wars, but that is a purely comparative statement and when it comes to Williams his lesser work is still fantastic compared to the average compositions of other maestros. There are some other improvements and good points to be made about some of the characters as well. Ian McDiarmid’s performance as Senator Palpatine is still as great as always and Ewan McGregor provides a much better performance as Obi-Wan than he did in The Phantom Menace. He is beginning to sound more like Alec Guinness: a trend that he takes further in Episode III. We also get much less Jar Jar Binks which is a plus. And while I do not regard Count Dooku as the most interesting villain to come out of Star Wars I do have to give credit to the late Christopher Lee who puts his best in everything he does. You can’t get cooler than Christopher Lee and his presence alone is what turns Attack of the Clones from a mediocre movie to an OK one.
Aside from the issues with the love story most of the other things that bug me about Episode II are minor complaints. I can live with the film’s overall blandness, and I can forgive the bad Threepio puns in the arena, and I can even let go of the absolutely ridiculous and farcical Yoda vs Count Dooku fight which everyone seems to like except me. At the end of the day; and after all my complaints are spoken and my grievances heard, Episode II is still Star Wars. It has lightsabers, the Force, epic space battles, Jedi Knights, Ben Burtt’s sound design, and John Williams’ music. It may be the weakest Star Wars movie, but it is still a Star Wars movie. I may not think of it as highly as some do and my tone may seem to convince people that I hate the film at times, but I can honestly say I do like it. I have problems with it and no amount of mindless brand loyalty will convince me to ignore those problems. Despite my criticism I am actually one of the biggest Prequel defenders in my social circle. Attack of the Clones is like one of those brothers or cousins that few people outside of your family like and you admittedly know that they have good reasons to dislike them. But being family you defend them anyway and you accept their flaws. Attack of the Clones is as much as part of the Star Wars family as A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back, black sheep or not. Besides, it’s not as bad as The Holiday Special. You have to admit that.
Check tomorrow for a review of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and may the Force be with you.
