A ctivities - What do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?

If it was up to him, then he’d go grilling with you every day. Loves teaching you how to barbecue, telling you about how hot the grill should be, what its components are, how long the meat and sausages should be on the iron, that sort of stuff. Graves also loves inviting his Shadows to a barbecue as well. That way he gets to unwind with you and them and you get to know the people he works with. Those are the small celebrations he looks forward to the most.

B eauty - What do they admire about their s/o? What do they think is beautiful about them?

On the one hand, he loves the fact that you’re independent and can go a long time without him. It’s necessary since he’s away a lot of the time. On the other hand, he does love how dependent you can be on him. Even just the small stuff gets to him, such as you having forgotten your wallet and wanting some ice cream, or you leaning into him for comfort when you’re watching a scary movie together. Yes, he loves you, but he also loves it when you need him. You’re his world, and he’s yours. He’s the big, strong man in your relationship and he’ll protect you from everything there may be.

C omfort - How would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?

I feel as though he’d try to give you some unsolicited advice. You’re more than welcome to tell him to shut up, though. But other than that, he’ll try to crack some jokes here and there to get you to smile again. Also not above cuddling you and holding you close to make you feel protected and loved. Your panic attack wouldn’t be the first one he’s experienced, in all honesty. Sometimes, he helps with calming down his Shadows. Will calmly talk to you, play some games to help you get your mind off things as well. Will breathe with you too, if you’re okay with that.

D reams - How do they picture their future with their s/o?

If it was up to him, then you’d be living on a ranch together. He grew up on one in Texas and sometimes wants to go back to that life. Just you being surrounded by cattle, sheep, horses and other kinds of animals. You’d have a nice German shepherd together and would tend to the animals together. Of course, he wouldn’t give up his PMC either, but he can dream about that sort of future. He doesn’t think it would ever become reality anyway. However, as long as he gets to spend his future with you, he’s happy.

E qual - Are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?

He leans more towards being the dominant person in your relationship, but he can be passive at times as well. Usually has his hand on you somewhere as well as an act of dominance. Loves having you sit on his lap too, sometimes even in public when there are no chairs. People should know that you’re together and that he’s the one protecting you. He’s more than happy to consider your suggestions, but it’s usually him who decides where you end up going. Especially if you’re indecisive.

F ight - Would they be easy to forgive their s/o? How are they fighting?

He’d be somewhat petty and resentful, but he wouldn’t let it out on you. He wouldn’t really let it out on anyone, he’s far too mature for that. However, you’d have to apologize to him for him to forgive you. As long as you’re being nice about it, he will. It’s rare for him to apologize unless he’s truly hurt you. When he was in the wrong about some fact he’ll usually ignore it. When he fights he gets a bit louder, his accent becomes a bit stronger, but that’s it. He won’t call you anything mean, but it will be known that he’s upset with you.

G ratitude - How grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?

He’s pretty grateful. Not as much as other people, though. He doesn’t always consider everything you’re doing for him. Not that he takes it for granted either, far from it, but he just doesn’t always think when he doesn’t need to. However, generally speaking, he is grateful for what you do for him. Will show it by either taking you on a nice date to somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, or by taking care of your home in your stead for a while. You, too, deserve to have a day off from it all, after all.

H onesty - Do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?

There are plenty of things he doesn’t tell you. Sure, it may seem like he’s very open about his job, but you’ll always get the feeling he’s not being entirely honest with you. However, aside from job related things, he’s a very honest man. While he may sugarcoat some things for you sometimes, he will tell you pretty much everything. You can ask him about any personal detail and there’s a good chance he’ll tell you about it. In fact, I encourage you to do so, Graves enjoys talking about himself to you. Ask him about his plans for you and him and he’ll get quite sappy too and won’t stop talking for an hour.

What did you think about Behlül’s relationships with Bihter and Nihal? Did he love either of them? Did either of them love him?

I think he did actually love both of them, but in his own way. He seems to have a tendency to have a great big romance that he quickly burns out and rinse and repeat with the next person he fancies.

As to whether he was loved, I'd say yes by both, but also in a limited way. I think he's kind of like the high school crush of a girl from a very small town, where the girl wants to date someone mostly because she thinks it's exciting at that age. And so her crush toward the guy develops more out of her daily life having a very limited pool of potential boyfriends, than out of any wow moment of attraction to that guy in particular.

For Bihter, I think she would have equally fallen for a different person who was young, handsome and charming, and consistently close at hand to observe.

But I don't know if she'd have slept with anyone who was not so casual as Behlül. His cheerful lack of morals and friendly persistence surely helped a bit to remove some mental barriers in her mind. With someone less happy-go-lucky, she'd maybe just have had lovesickness and stayed at that as a 'noble' kind of compromise between cheating and withering without experiencing real love.

There is a word I can't quite translate, 'prepustiti se' (to let yourself go, to abandon yourself to a feeling/situation, can be have positive or negative connotations), which I feel works for both Bihter and Nihal's feelings to Behlül.

They were first pursued by him and they seem to have almost purposefully convinced themselves into loving him. Both were lonely and desperate in different ways.

Bihter was in an unhappy marriage, I don't think I need to elaborate too much as she herself describes it all in a self-aware way in the novel.

As to Nihal, she was frankly somewhat neglected by her family. Yes, she's otherwise "spoiled", but they made huge decisions to remove her brother, and her governess, and her kitchen buddies, and didn't even tell her until the very moment it had already happened! Extremely frustrating and scary for such an already isolated girl. She lived from day to day not knowing who she could lose next, no wonder she got all emo.

So when the situation came that everyone was suddenly eager to marry her to a guy - one she already knew and trusted and casually bantered with - I think half of the appeal would be a young girl's physical attraction to Behlül as a man, but the other half would be the idea of finally keeping someone for herself (because her family couldn't very well decide to whoosh away her husband on a whim, lol). I can see why she'd accept the situation.

I may already have decided that we're getting a third cat, later this year or maybe next year.

I really want a kitten 😭 our two boys were already six months old when we finally got them, and I really missed that earlier time. we had a bunch of kittens when I was younger but we never had any toys for our cats or anything, so I'd like to experience that properly. and my husband never had cats before, so he's never been around kittens.

I don't know, it's probably stupid, but I don't think we'll want more cats when our boys are gone (though hopefully it'll be many years before that happens), so it would make sense to get another cat while they're still young.

Though he was reeling from...everything, it seemed (the memories rushing forth to greet his brain, the sea of emotions threatening to sweep him away, the closeness of Emily here and now, anchoring him amidst it all), Randall had enough clarity to cup her face, brushing her hair back as he breathed, "Emily...there was nothing you could've done. Had you tried to fight her...she would've killed you too."

With startling clarity did he remember his demise, and how struggling against his attacker was so futile: He tried, God knew he tried, but her grip was like iron, and so he was pinned under his hands, so much like claws, as her fangs sank into his throat to drain him dry. He fought with all of his strength, but it was not enough, and he knew it wouldn't have been any better for Emily had she tried to fight her off.

"I'm here, I'm here..." he swore gently, pressing his forehead to hers and squeezing her hands in his, trying to ground her in the moment, to prove that he was real and that he wasn't going anywhere. "Oh God, Emily...I remember...I remember so much!"

Oh, those beautiful nights! Nights were the only time they could see one another, and how they made the most of them-long walks in the moonlight, dancing in the darkened haberdashery, taking turns reading passages from their favorite books...it explained so much about how he felt when he met her-how it felt as if they'd already done so much together. It was because they did!

Currently rereading ATLOP and thinking about Percy showing Jason Avatar to help him with his air bending (do they have cable in New Rome? Would Jason have even seen it or would he still be in the woods with Lupa when it was released?) or them bonding over learning to control their element by watching Avatar (Jason relating to Aang because of them both being the only airbender/child of Jupiter and having all this responsibility placed on their shoulders from a young age because of the way they were born). Just, Jason watching Avatar.

I think they do have cable in New Rome, and any rules about internet in canon and monsters is fake here, we don’t stan that, fuck that.

i am having so many thoughts, gonna try to break them into different posts in a way that makes sense.

first, the bonfire moment during the b.each episode.  

is it completely realistic that m.ai’s comment to ty l.ee about needing “10 boyfriends” a byproduct of poor writing trying to set her apart as “smart” compared to ty l.ee?  quite possibly given the shell moment  &  m.ai’s “maybe stupid girls [would like the shell]” before immediately cutting to ty l.ee saying it’s pretty.  i tend to think of it as antiquated writing, but it’s equally possible/probable that it’s something that’s seeped into her worldview  &  she has the ‘not like other girls’ syndrome for awhile.  which, tbf, she’s not, but neither is ty l.ee, so?  but it could just be another thing for her to unlearn.  but!  not that this reading makes it any better, but from the mai.lee angle, i can see it as also being influenced by bitterness/jealousy.  like, it’s not entirely wrong the why of it, but the phrasing of it, esp at first, is unnecessarily antagonistic.  anyways yeah i think about this moment a lot and what to do with it.

anyone notice how when m.ai snaps  &  has her “leave me alone!” moment, it’s 100% directed at a.zula?  z.uko’s been there trying to goad her into an emotion  &  she could’ve just as easily directed it at him, or at the both of them, but it’s all at a.zula.  poetic cinema.

also, love how it’s a.zula that ends up getting under m.ai’s skin during this scene.  yes, m.ai knew exactly where to hit a.zula during the b.oiling r.ock for maximum damage,  &  the surprise (and ty l.ee, which was even more surprising) was half the hurt of it, i think, but a.zula knows things about them too, even despite her  &  ty l.ee trying to hide it.  you aren’t (forced to be) close for that long without picking up on things.

lastly, just about the whole episode, i know people don’t like it, but i love it.  it’s messy, and it should be.  z.uko’s still wrestling with his decision  &  isn’t really able to talk about it before then with anyone lest they think he’s a traitor, m.ai  &  ty l.ee are still in a situation where they have to follow a.zula’s whims to some extent, like the way she has them play hand ball or in earlier episodes when she uses a lazy excuse to get m.ai to leave z.uko, (which she does while sparing a very meaningful look at a.zula to show us that it’s a calculated thing, that she’s doing it to not rock the boat but she doesn’t at all like it).  so they’re not exactly in the best place, either,  &  in some ways, i can see how all of them being together without being on the chase for something would feel even more chafing, bc there’s nothing to do  &  no real buffer?  also if you think about it, they were probably told to come to the trip too.  z.uko didn’t want to go or be there, but it was z.uko  &  a.zula who had to go so o.zai could meet with his advisers alone.  m.ai  &  ty l.ee could’ve been doing whatever, but were probably dragged along too.  m.ai being m.ai doesn’t see the point to complain like z.uko does, though on the boat she’s got her arms crossed  &  isn’t exactly into it either,  &  ty l.ee’s making the best out of the situation (& probably does like the beach, so it’s not 100% horrible).  then, a.zula, of course, lied to her father about the a.vatar  &  later realises due to z.uko’s poor lying that he might be alive. &  then there at the island coming face to face with some of her memories about her mom again.  so she’s got some of her own things going on too. all of this to say, literally none of them were doing great,  &  it makes sense that it sometimes got messy  &  wasn’t always sunshine  &  rainbows.  i like that the show had some good moments in s3 but it also showed that it was complicated  &  that being back home  &  everything being picture perfect for all of them wasn’t always exactly that.  &  i do think that catharsis probably helped them all foster some understanding, but i also think that, without change, they’d get back to that point  &  be stepping on each other’s toes.  i love the possibility of their dynamic but without hitting the reset button  &  allowing them to build it back up, all of them, on their own terms (and if they want to), it was just too dysfunctional.  ty l.ee  &  m.ai have to want to be friends with a.zula  &  also figure out what that means without falling into old patterns of doing what she wants.  they, too, also have to learn how to communicate more now that they can  &  don’t have to watch what they say at all times.  & z.uko, of course, would not have been happy if he had to sell out his uncle  &  his values to be there  &  accepted  &  have the life he had.  post war gives them all such a great starting point to heal  &  begin rebuilding the relationships they want to have  &  begin by negotiating the terms better.  i guess? point being, i love the b.each  and i’m so sorry to anyone who hates the episode.
