Yeah, the stans are really childish. One of them blew up at me because I used one of their few seconds gifs, and like I expected, they went straight to insulting me. They could've ignored the post or calmly asked me to remove the gif, but nope! They complain about seeing our posts like they can't just block the tags. They also called us obsessed for hating a show that ended years ago....but people hate twilight and 50 shades of grey, and that ended years ago? Make it make sense.

I'm not a catra stan-stan and definitely not an apologist but I really like her character. Her redemption arc was botched and it's a shame because she had a really interesting character, and she had perspective on abuse that I'd never seen portrayed before.

I live in a relatively abusive home with (gross generalisation here) me as a scapegoat and my brother as the golden child. I'm not proud of it but i've been abusive like catra (even if not to this extent because ??????? She did reallyfucked up things ?????????). And seeing that on screen, it was freeing in a way, like staring in a really dark mirror, and it felt good to have a character to relate too in this aspect.

And then came the redemption arc 🤡 honestly Catra's point of view is not badly written from what I remember. Like trying your best to be a better person and stop being abusive, but the other person doing something that sets you off and falling back on those patterns on instincts ? I've been there, and it's somewhat nice to have the scene with mealog to relate to for example. Having to take responsibility for your actions and your reactions, but every sorry feels awful and has to be torn out of you because you feel guilty as fuck and you know apologies aren't gonna change anything, and you know there will be other instances when your abusive tendencies will take over despite your best efforts? It was freeing to see those sorts of moments on screen.

But adora shouldn't have forgiven her. The others shouldn't have forgiven her. Maybe they could be forgiven, but not trusted. It doesn't make sense, it's rushed, it's stupid, I hate it. Also catra stops feeling guilty really fucking early for what she's done, like ma'am show a bit more remorse you tried to kill her ? Stop complaining when frosta punches you in the face, it's explainable and you deserve it. In her redemption, she lashed at Adora once or twice, got told it's okay I forgive you please don't do it anymore and suddenly she was "fixed". That's not how it works and it sucks, it hurts, that's not how it works. We never saw a broken catra post redemption, and it lacked.

So, yeah. I'm pissed about her redemption arc, and it's a shame because i really wanted to see it work.

(I didn't even mention catradora because that's not the point but the amatonormativity of it all? You're broken but your true love's kiss has fixed you so it's okay)

this is exactly how i feel too! i didn't start off hating catra because she was a really compelling villain and a scarily accurate version of an abuse victim who started adopting those abusive tendencies themselves. i didn't relate to her entirely but i could definitely relate to some aspects of her, especially her anger that sometimes got best of her.

but it feels like the creators forgot that she was supposed to be redeemed and kept making her do the most heinous things with no remorse, only to remember in s5 that she needs to be redeemed, and shoving a hasty redemption arc where she ultimately does not change at all.

i don't think even catra's perspective was that good because she only changed for adora. she didn't redeem herself because she knew what she was doing was wrong or because she regretted taking part in the war. she did it because she wanted adora back and also because she was of no use to horde prime.

and after getting saved by adora, catra honestly does not try much to actually correct her mistakes. she keeps lashing out at adora and abusing her, she's snarky with the other princesses and keeps falling back into her old habits. and no one ever calls her out for it. healing is not linear, sure, but there should have been someone who would keep catra in check and call her out when she starts acting shitty again.

but no, the only instance of her trying that we got was when she admitted that she was working on her anger issues, and then immediately proceeded to guilt trip adora by saying that adora was giving her a hard time.

catra really had a lot of potential but it's a shame the creators valued a rushed toxic romance more than actual character development and good storytelling.

What do people want out of romance. I saw someone say Rebecca Sugar only portrays dysfunctional f/f relationships. I've seen people complain about Catradora for the same reason. Over in Straight people town Sarah J Maas is getting lambasted because Rhysand sometimes doesn't tell the whole truth.

Have y'all ever been in a relationship? The first thing my therapist and I discussed when I decided to seriously look for a partner is "hurt is inevitable" when you have two people with a serious connection you will have incompatible triggers you will have areas of disagreement and you will make mistakes. There is a difference between that and abuse. No two people are just going to magically communicate all the time and never get frustrated or angry. You will never be ecstatic to be around someone 100% of the time.

So, naturally, that should be a part of a romantic plotline. Characters will have different ways of handling things. Characters have different values and make difficult decisions. I think about the infamous arc where Rhysand doesn't tell Feyre her pregnancy is actually very high risk (first of all, we don't know that whole story because my girl Sarah loves to play with perspective so I'm pretty sure from NESTA's pov things look worse than they are). Rhys's number one flaw is that he takes on all the burdens himself and keeps information from others that might allow them to step in. It's super in character for Rhys to keep harmful knowledge from Feyre to protect her peace. Is it the "right" thing to do? No, but it's something Rhys would do and Feyre literally knows him inside and out so she has accepted him for the person he is. She accepted him after he kept the very big secret of their mating bond from her too. She gets to make that choice. Rhys literally loved her when she was dirty, illiterate, hated him and human. Yeah he did something REALLY bad, but sometimes that happens in a relationship. Sometimes people do shit that really sucks. You have to rebuild trust but it doesn't automatically make the relationship unhealthy or abusive.

If you're lost, let's talk about Bubblegum and Marceline. We know both these characters have serious flaws. Bubblegum has a serious ego and Marceline is terrible at regulating her emotions (she's also not super respectful of others' boundaries). Now if you're sitting here thinking "Bubblegum is an evil dictator" I can't help you because you've completely missed the themes of Adventure Time. They clearly had a turbulent relationship at one point. And, they broke up. They then both go through a long period of self-discovery and decide to get back together. So yes, they did have a dysfunctional relationship and it ended. But, after learning and growing they got to a healthy place in their relationship and that earlier time is something they both agreed to work through. That's not "dysfunctional" it's just...a relationship.

So what do you want? A relationship where neither person ever does anything wrong? Do you have that relationship with someone? Even if it was realistic, stories need conflict. There needs to be some friction just to keep it interesting. I'm sure some of you weirdos would watch or read a whole series where everyone uses "I" statements and reads each other's minds and never has a moment of frustration and anger. But I don't think the general population would be that into such a story.

The most embarrassing aspect of the Catradora Vs Entrapdak discourse is not that the ships have nothing to do with each other, but the fact that its not actually about the ships: It’s just people debating whether Hordak or Catra, as people, should be the redeemed villain in a romantic relationship. For some reason, people can’t grasp the concept of *TWO* former villains having partners. I don’t get it.

i see a LOT of people complaining very vocally about catradora not being made canon until the last episode/not getting 'enough development' etc etc and. kdjhgbdnjd it just sort of fills me with a blind rage because do you KNOW what kind of bullshit noelle had to pull to get the kiss to happen? did you know that they were explicitly told 'no romance'? did you know they had to board a version of the kiss where it faded to white before they could actually kiss? do you know about the tricks noelle has spoken about having to use to get spinnetossa alone? and like. to this day i am only convinced that the execs jumped for it because of diversity points and the backlash from voltron. like. before you start complaining about how they should have had more time together in the show/this that whatever you want, pLEASE think about how hard the crew had to work to get as much explict queer rep as they did. don't let yourself fall into the trap of thinking 'oh it was so easy to get catradora canon so they should have done ____ / given us ____ / made ____ _____' because it's more than likely that they could have had the last season censored and all of that rep we seem to be taking for granted removed

Is a collaring ceremony real, or did you invent it for the story?

oh yeah, lets talk about this! disclaimer: i just know what i've researched online. under a read more because it is Certainly a kink and related to one i can see being triggering for some even though i dont go into it, so just to be safe. ill talk about the ceremonies first and then why i chose to do my own bastardization of it LOL

(note that people do wear collars outside of this, im talking about in the context of collaring ceremony specifically. you can also enter this kind of relationship without using collars. I saw discourse about "velcro collars" that "cheapen the meaning" of true collars while researching this lmao).

collaring ceremonies are real. Typically it's something that happens when committing to a full-time D/s or M/s relationship with someone. from everything i have seen, once the collar goes on at a collaring ceremony, it stays on and you stay submissive for your dom (until the time you decide to dissolve the relationship, but usually youre Pretty Sure Of It at that point). It is a massive commitment, just like being married is, and something you discuss and plan with the same level of seriousness.

the collar itself may be subtle, or it may change if you have like, a day collar to wear out, a normal collar you wear at home/at kink events, and play collars or whatever, but i've also seen people who straight up have a steel collar their dom put on them two years ago and has never come off.

(side note, the materials and look dont matter so much as what you use it for. as i say in the fic, collars typically belong to the dom. play collars are collars used for sex that dont have power outside of that, which is what catra and adora have up until catra gives her the necklace - and kind of still all they have at the end of the fic)

collaring ceremonies can be private like what i had in the fic (i believe this is the most common practice), or they can have friends and "family" in attendance, or even be held in a public dungeon or something. i read a transcript of a public one while researching. they are a lot like weddings (in the ceremony at least) and are treated with the same weight. the dom is usually fully dressed and the sub may wear anything ranging from formal wear to just the collar.

for the fic, i adapted it, because i whole heartedly believe thats what you should do with bdsm and sex in general: do what works for you and your partner. in this case, they decided to have what amounts to a private collaring ceremony where they exchanged vows and their hopes for the relationship before catra finally put the day collar on adora, but adora isn't collared in practice, it's just a kinky engagement necklace (which i know the people who complain about velcro collars would hate, but again, i think what works for people's private relationships is their business. there's also people outside of the scene wearing o-ring chokers as a fashion statement, let people live).

i learned about collaring ceremonies while doing my initial research for beg for me and immediately knew it was was what i wanted to do for their wedding/proposal in a later installment in the series, both because it was something new and different i was never going to write/research otherwise, and because this whole fic kicked off with adora being stressed out by a wedding and not great with their planning. seeking out an alternative for their own marriage made sense in this au and it rarely does since i headcannon them both as big criers at weddings, so i thought it would be fun to explore. i also wanted to, once again, explore how catradora’s trauma intersects with their experience of bdsm when it came to the collaring.

writing this was very much a stab at the dark, but it was an interesting challenge! im glad to have finally written it after having it on my list for a year

10. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?

They both do!

For Catra it's easier to remember but for sad reasons, I think she probably learned to watch what others chose as a way to try and predict or explain what was going to happen/did happen to her growing up. Well of course Shadow Weaver did ABC she had red wine before hand, red wine = ABC. Now it's just a habit to see so she memorizes and orders away.

For Glimmer it's more of a love language thing. She wants to remember the things Catra likes and enjoys, and really feels good when she nails it and get that little happy smile Catra pretends she didn't have. One time Catra made a ridiculous food order (I want the 6 inch white bread, put pastrami and provolone first and toast then add olives and toast for just a little, add mayo, lettuce, half pickle, hold the tomato, salt and pepper on the pickle layer, drown in the special sauce) and Glimmer is now dedicated to getting that exact order every time. She may die of embarrassment while doing it and apologizes profusely to the poor SoB making it, but at least she tips well each time. Also it's worth it because when she gives it to Catra, Catra does the little smile and blush but then complains because she literally made the order up to mess with Glimmer.

19. Who tells their family/friends about their relationship first?

Glimmer will shout anything from any roof top if it makes her heart flutter. Probably the first part of the relationship was negotiating that Catra didn't want anyone to know at first (she kinda assumed their relationship would fail quickly and didn't want to deal with others taking sides), and Glimmer vibrating a totally normal amount until she was able to do said roof top screaming. Bow was the exception made because Catra wanted her new girlfriend to not explode before they even made it to a month in.

But once it's out in the open and Catra feels more comfortable in the relationship you bet your ass she's the obnoxious, "Oh, have you met my girlfriend, Glimmer? Yeah, Glimmer is my partner! We are DATING." (Alternatively: "And this is my ex-girlfriend, Glimmer." "Fuck you, I'm her wife.")

23. Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines?

Adora practices them with finger guns and eyebrow wiggles before deploying for maximum embarrassment factor. She probably researches bad pick up lines, she likes to tell them at the most inopportune times. I think Catra eventually caves and will use one bad on purpose pick up line on Adora's birthday as a treat, and that is a mistake because Adora doubles down after that.

28. What do they do when they’re away from each other?

Yearn and cry mostly.

Once they're in the groove of being apart it's easier but they spent so long apart that any significant time away from one another just turns them into sad sacks. Have you seen the comic where Adora eats pasta from the pot with tongs and then it turns out Catra is in a purrito eating taco bell while Entrapta pats her head? That's them. That's the behavior when apart.

A Dream Come True

It’s finally here! The fic and comic you’ve all been waiting for! And it’s all catradora fluff as far as the eye can see.

Today was a big day for Etheria. It was the first Princess Prom since the fall of Prime, the first Princess Prom in many years to be celebrated in a time of peace and prosperity. So of course, Etheria’s great savior and protector was expected to make an appearance, and she was expected to look good.

Though if Adora asked just about anyone, they would claim that she always looked good. But she did want to put in the extra effort today. It took her some convincing from all of her friends to keep her from over planning and over preparing like last time.

There was no threat of war, no great enemy, no lies or intrigue, it would just be a ball with all the people she loved. She could just rest and relax tonight. So she put on a beautiful white dress, let her hair loose from its near permanent ponytail, donned a pretty little tiara, and just let herself not be combat ready for once.

Looking now at her own reflection in the room’s waterfall - the closest to a practical use she found to those wasteful things - she had to admit that she did look pretty, though for some reason she was struck by a strange sense of familiarity.

“Just let me brush it!” She heard Glimmer call from outside the room.

“No!” Catra yelled back as she ran into the room with the queen chasing after her, brush in hand.

Though Catra acted like she was running for life, they both still giggled. Catra tried to use her wife as cover from the queen’s attack, but Glimmer followed her anyway, and both just started running circles around Adora.

“Don’t let her touch me!” Catra yelled, hiding behind Adora, “she’s gonna torture me!”

“Do you always have to be this dramatic?” Glimmer asked, knowing full well that the answer was yes.

“Come on, guys,” Bow called, calmly walking in, “if we’re late to Scorpia’s first ball she’s gonna kill us.”

He pulled Glimmer closer and she leaned against him, hooking an arm around his back. For a moment there the queen seemed to forget about her plans to torture Catra, and just enjoyed that little display of affection from her husband.

“Fine, you’re off the hook,” she surrendered, but added just a little threat at the end, “this time.”

Catra stuck her tongue out at them, still using Adora for cover, as they left the room, leaving the two of them alone together. Once she was sure she was safe from Glimmer’s hairbrush, she stepped out from behind her wife and laughed a little to herself.

“You coming?” She asked, reaching a hand towards Adora.

The whole time Adora had been stunned. In equal parts by this constant feeling of dejavu, and by just how beautiful Catra looked right now. Her wife had always been a master of the casually gorgeous look, but this time she had completely out done herself.

“Etheria to Adora,” Catra called, playfully, “you still there, Adora?”

“Sorry, I just have this weird feeling that I’ve seen this before,” she explained, the feeling completely disappearing a moment later.

“What? Did you sneak a peek while me and Glimmer were putting the look together?” She teased.

“No!” Adora defended herself, “it’s just dejavu or something. I--you’re messing with me, aren’t you?”

Catra feigned offense, “such accusations from my own wife? I would never do such a thing.”

“Oh you little--!”

“Guys,” Bow interrupted again, calling from the hallway beyond, “Scorpia’s ball, remember?”

“Sorry, your majesty,” Adora shouted back, they both knew he didn’t like the title, but it was fun to mess with him sometimes.

That earned her a little laugh from Catra and a soft nudge to her side, “you ready to go?”

“Yeah, I think I am,” she answered, hooking her arm around Catra’s as they made their way out of the room.

They had barely stepped into the hallways of Bright Moon castle when they were stopped by a voice calling for them.

“Oh my goodness!” Exclaimed a very excited King Micah, “you both look stunning!”

The king had always been such a sweetheart, the man had nearly adopted the two of them after the war was over. After everything that had happened, it was nice seeing him this happy.

“Hey there, your majesty,” Catra greeted, “everything ready for the dance?”

“Indeed it is!” He replied, his bright smile growing wider, “before you go, though, I have a big surprise for you!”

“Oh?” 

With a dramatic flare worthy of Double Trouble, King Micah stepped aside to reveal…

The most adorable thing they’ve ever seen.

Behind the king stood their child. Little Finn looked as adorable as they looked annoyed at their new outfit, a lovely uniform in several shades of purple and beautiful gold accents. The kid was just short of ten years old, but they already looked like a fancy little dignitary of the kingdom. The only thing standing out from the illusion was their messy blonde hair.

“You look precious!” Adora squealed at the sight.

Catra gasped, holding on tighter to her wife’s arm. It was the only thing she could do not to run over and hug them right this instant.

“Moms!” Finn groaned, “please!”

Unfortunately their pleas for help were lost on their moms, who were still busy blabbering about how adorable they looked.

“Uncle Micah, do I really have to wear this? It’s itchy,” they complained, hoping their uncle would listen, “and lame.”

The king turned to address his little nibling, but was horrified by what he saw.

“How did you manage to mess up your hair in the five minutes since I finished it?!” He demanded, utterly shocked.

“It’s a skill, uncle,” Finn replied, giving him a smug look that clearly ran in the family.

Looking none too pleased with all that lost work, Micah drew a quick glyph in the air, using just a bit of magic to comb his nibling’s hair in an instant.

“There, fixed.” The king proudly declared, earning a hiss from the angry child.

And also earning him a hug from Adora.

“They look amazing,” she beamed, “thank you!”

“My pleasure, Adora,” he replied, his voice and expression growing softer, “I missed out on too many of these moments with Glimmer. I’m not going to miss any more of them.”

Meanwhile Catra no longer had Adora to hold on to to help contain herself, so she had dashed over to their child, too busy showering them with love and affection to notice the tender moment happening behind her.

“You are the cutest kid in all of Etheria,” she happily praised.

“Mom!” Finn groaned once more.

Adora let out a content sigh as she watched those two. She loved them with all her heart and they had made the past decade of her life better than she could have ever dreamed it would be.

“Thanks again,” she repeated to Micah, finally letting go of the hug.

Walking over to her family - wow, it really warmed her heart every time she thought of them like that - she picked up the little light of her life and carried them on her shoulders. They mumbled a few words in annoyance, but Adora could feel their tail happily swaying against her back.

“You’re going to win Best Kid at the dance for sure!” Catra commented.

“I don’t think that’s a real award, mom.”

“We’ll make it real, kid.” She declared, “don’t worry, I have some pull with Princess Scorpia.”

Adora couldn’t help but smile at that.

“What’s got you all smiley like that?” Catra asked, leaning closer to her wife as they walked together.

“It’s just…this is our first Princess Prom as a family,” she said, a little teary eyed, “I still can’t believe we got this far. It’s more than I could have ever dreamed of.”

“Well, you better start believing it,” Catra replied, giving her a little kiss on the cheek.

“Ew!” Finn complained, hiding their face so they wouldn’t be forced to see any more disgusting affection from their moms.

The two of them laughed together and Adora was certain that no dream could ever compare to the life she now lived.

Let me ask you, if you had a show and you want to write in your marriage in which your the protagonist and your partner is the love interest/antagonist, would you write them emotionally putting you down? Would you write them trying to murder you? Would you write them infecting you to a murderous being then plan to use the virus to kill your own friends? Would you write them almost destroying the world because they think its your fault for anothers betrayal? Would you write them using their mothers abuse tatics on you? Would you write them choosing the favouritism game where they chose you over another victim to focus saving? Would you write them blaming you for things they caused? Would you write them leaving then complain about you not wanting them when your about to sacrifice yourself, potentially dying? Would you write them still blaming you for things that arent your fault and what made them the antagonist to begin with? Would you write them calling you an idiot for not getting that they love you sooner despite their harm to you throughout the shows run time of you two? Im not accusing the relationship of being abusive, im just saying if you wrote your wife like that, its extremely concerning and with that, it doesnt sound like the relationship would be all loving. Especially the glitra incident where nd/nate's wife says how glimmer and catra having an affair, cheating on adora and bow is 'spicy' is also extremely concerning considering in nd/nates manual, he wrote how his wife use to cheat on him.

Just because the main relationship of the show was inspired/resembles the creators marriage doesnt make it non abusive all of a sudden, it just causes concern to the creators relationship. Again, not saying nate/nd's marriage is abusive, i dont know either of them and i hope it is a loving and healthy relationship, im just saying catradora itself is abusive and using nate/nds marriage isnt going to change that

Her defenses are torn apart, and her hands turn into fists.

However, Adora simply replies,

“I’m not stupid.”

And walks away.

Adora’s senses are kind of numb to everything else around her. She doesn’t acknowledge anything, anyone, just goes straight to her room and hides in there. She ultimately lies on the bed to stare at the window. The bright and happy colors outside don’t cheer her up like they usually do.

Despite her clutching fists, Adora doesn’t cry.

She’s not even angry. At least, not through yelling and punching things. Maybe at the Horde she would be punching a bag right now. But she doesn’t want to beat up her pillows this time.

Adora just stares at nothing. Nothing at all. Her vision might even blur at the world around her.

“ Hey, Adora, what’s up?”

Adora crosses her arms and looks away.

“Alright, if you’re gonna ignore me the whole day then at least just tell me what I did,” Catra complains.

The blond girl hesitates for a moment, but ultimately says the truth.

“… I’m not stupid.”

“Huh?”

“You… You keep calling me stupid. A lot,” Adora points out. “I don’t like it when you call me that.”

“Oh.” Catra then pushes her arm playfully. “Hey, you know I just like teasing you, right?”

“Well, yeah, but…”

“Then forget about it! That doesn’t really matter, does it?”

“It… does to me.”

“Jeez, Adora. You shouldn’t take things so seriously. You’ve gotta relax.”

“But—”

“Come on, we’re late for lunch!”

Before she could even protest, Catra grabs her hand and pulls her to the common room, essentially shutting Adora up for the rest of the day. Catra acts like nothing happened.

(She still calls Adora stupid, but sometimes tries to cover it by saying ‘I’m just kidding’.)

(It doesn’t make her feel better, honestly.)

Until someone knocks on the door, and Adora does not respond. Because she knows who it is.

“Adora?” Glimmer calls her name. At her heavy silence, the sparkled girl sits next to her, by the corner of the bed.

“Adora… I’m sorry,” Glimmer sighs, “I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”

That’s not exactly what Adora is upset about.

Glimmer probably notices it.

“I shouldn’t have called you stupid,” she clarifies. “Sometimes you do stupid things, but… you’re not stupid, you know?”

Adora only then realizes how tense she is once she relaxes her shoulders.

“Still, you should really take better care of yourself,” Glimmer emphasizes, “because you’re really important to us.”

“… I know.” Adora finally speaks up, “I’m She-Ra, I’m supposed to—”

“No, it’s because you’re Adora. You’re my friend, Bow’s friend – everyone here loves you, and we want to help you take down the Horde.”

At last, Adora turns around to Glimmer, who smiles at her.

“You really mean it?”

“Of course! You’re a great friend, Adora. You just… need to be good to yourself, too.”

Glimmer pats her shoulder, the action more comforting than Adora wants to admit. She might not be overly used to regular physical affection, but she likes Glimmer’s touches.

Adora sighs, “Okay.”

The other girl’s hand doesn’t leave her shoulder for a while. Once it does, Adora instantly misses it.

“Well, you should get some rest,” Glimmer tells her. “I’ll go give the report to my mom. And also tell Bow you’re okay.”

“Okay.”

Adora doesn’t have the courage to ask her to stay, but she figures Glimmer should do her things. The princess instantly teleports herself out of the room, gone within the blink of an eye. Adora’s smile fades.

She returns to the same position in bed, but at least she doesn’t feel as heavy right now.

That’s when the sparkling sound returns.

“Bow will take care of the report for me,” Glimmer clarifies, “I have something more important right now.”

And once she sits next to her again and touches Adora’s loose hair, the former soldier shivers inside.

But it’s… a good shiver?

Adora feels like crying.

Though, maybe, it’s okay if she does now.

@ericamzdm I’ve read all three parts of your 5x06 pick apart and I think you made some interesting points. I’m going to respond to all of the posts at once (really just the first two, though) for the sake of clarity, and because a lot of the themes carry over and my remarks on them are more general. I’m doing this in a seperate post to avoid highjacking yours and so I’m not sending a huge ass post onto my followers’ timelines. (But interested readers should check out the original posts here: part 1, part 2, part 3.)

First of all, while I disagree with a number of your conclusions, I want to say thank you for putting into words why this episode (and in particular the fandom’s reaction to it) makes me really uncomfortable. I’m not actually sure how much of the problem is in the episode itself vs. the way people talk about it, but I agree said framing issue is there and the writers could have made it better with a few small changes.

I wouldn’t call Adora’s behavior in this episode abusive, with the possible exceptions of the mattress flip and backing Catra into the corner and pinning her arm. And even with those, you gotta remember that these two have been friends since they were little kids, and scrapping and physical aggression is just part of their relationship (remember Catra scratching Adora in 5x03?). Of course, it used to be playful/childish and now the context is different, so there’s room for disagreement there. Even if it is abusive it’s clearly unintentionally so, but Adora does have a very bad habit (we saw it in Promise too) of getting up in Catra’s face and using her superior size to intimidate, which is super uncomfortable to watch given how many times we have seen Shadow Weaver do the same thing to Catra.

Really, I think the crux of this matter is that neither Catra nor Adora is abusive towards the other, but they were raised in an abusive environment and picked up a lot of their tools for handling conflict from that environment. Further, I disagree with your assertion that Adora was abusing Catra back in the Horde. However, you are right that she picked up bad habits there and I think in a way Catra feels like Adora abused her because she was part of the system that abused her - while she tried to protect her from Shadow Weaver we know she also did some victim blaming. Adora wasn’t in a position of much influence and was trying to help, but I can understand the resentment there and why Catra felt the need to cut ties earlier in the show.

One thing you’re very right about, though, is that in this episode Adora did loom quite a bit and used intimidating body language that made me (and Catra) uncomfortable as an abuse survivor. I disagree Adora’s holding Catra prisoner but I think to Catra it might feel that way anyway, which is really the issue. As you noted there is a huge power imbalance here with Catra recovering from basically dying and being in her PJs and with no allies. And Adora definitely violates Catra’s boundaries again and again, so set on smoothing things over that she fails to realize her insistence on fixing things is making them worse. As is often the case with her, her intentions are good but she completely misreads what the other person needs from her and barges on with her way instead of listening to them. Adora’s complaint that nothing has changed is her fault as much as Catra’s imo.

I also agree the part where she is stomping around huffing and kicking things and complaining that Catra is a brat is a sign of her emotional dysregulation and Not Great behavior. Someone asked once if I found that behavior abusive and no I don’t because it’s not directed at Catra, but it is still hard to watch. I agree Adora’s categorization of Catra as a brat while lashing out physically feels a little Shadow Weaver (intentionally or not) and that specific word choice does imply that she looks down on Catra and doesn’t respect her agency/isn’t putting in the effort to understand why she is not being ‘convenient’. It’s not a good look, and it’s not clear enough that she’s in the wrong here. (Catra is in the wrong too, the issue is that Adora’s behavior is also problematic but is not sufficiently framed that way.)

This could have been such a pivotal scene if Glimmer had taken a bit of a different tack with Adora. In fact, I think that was what made the episode just not quite work the way it’s supposed to. Glimmer is a lot like Catra, and she has had a lot of similar conflicts with Adora. If Glimmer had done more to discourage Adora’s overbearing behavior and told her she needs to give Catra space and respect it could have done a lot for Glimmer’s character arc as well as the arc of this episode. Without that, you’re right, the moment when Adora backs off and gives Catra the space to choose lands more like bitterness and giving up as opposed to making a choice to respect Catra’s agency in the way she needs to if she wants Catra to feel safe to open up.

(Of course she does agree later on to trust Catra’s judgement and let her connect to the hivemind and that also shows development, but as you said it felt a little unearned.)

So yeah I disagree with your assertions that Adora is an abuser and that she’s holding Catra prisoner, but I agree with a number of your observations about the episode itself. I also agree that the framing of the episode made it seem more like it was Catra being the problem rather than Catradora having a hard time renegotiating their relationship and its boundaries. Adora is absolutely being overbearing in this episode and I don’t think it was properly addressed, i.e. it wasn’t clear enough that those problems they were both having were problems on Adora’s end too. And I think a different conversation with Glimmer could have fixed that, just a few lines. The episode showed both of them struggling but I think it does come across like more of the onus is on Catra, like she’s being unreasonable as opposed to being defensive for understandable reasons.

But like I said, some of this is actually more about the fandom’s reaction to the episode. Maybe the writers were hoping to get across that they both needed to work on their bullshit but the fandom has excused Adora because she’s the hero. To be fair, Adora’s mistakes in this episode are very in character for her, in line with her faults/insecurities in general, so maybe they expected us to understand she’s not handling the situation properly.

The fandom reaction to Adora flipping Catra’s mattress and backing her into the corner reminds me of the reactions to DT obliterating Catra with that speech in 4x13. I think on some level we like seeing these drastic actions because watching Catra spiral is frustrating and we want to see something get through to her. It’s satisfying in a way. But on the other hand, both those situations left her with this kind of body language:

And idk, I’m not sure that’s something we as a fandom should be celebrating. Especially considering that DT’s speech left Catra wanting to die and that this bullish behavior by Adora wasn’t really what flipped the switch. It’s pretty significant that the moment Catra asks Adora to stay is once she backs off and says she won’t force her to give her a place in her life. And I think we the fandom tend to overlook that.

So op, I wish you hadn’t come to some of the conclusions you did with your analysis, but I am grateful to you for starting this conversation. I was having a hard time putting it into words other than “it sets off tons of alarm bells in my head and does no one else hear that??”

She-Ra Spoilers Ahead!!!

I just finished She-Ra and the Princesses of Power so I figured I’d slap down a few of my immediate thoughts. I’m not a great writer and I don’t always know how to put my thoughts into words, but I wanted to try.

- I got Catradora spoiled for me early on, so I looked at a lot of their interactions through a lens of that being the end result. For the first few seasons, I was like “that shouldn’t happen, this relationship is too riddled with trauma and abuse to end up healthy”. Between now and then, though, I’ve seen/read several things on seeing characters as parts of a story instead of as “real” people. Catra’s arc and her relationship with Adora are obviously much faster-paced “recoveries” than would (healthily) happen in real life, but that’s an artifact of the medium. The messages of the story still come through clearly, and the fact that there are things that need to heal is pointedly noted. Basically, I guess what I’m saying is “I ship it”.

- Catra and Adora’s reaction to Shadowweaver’s sacrifice felt really notably real and genuine to me. I feel like this is a part where some people might say “she was horrible to them, especially Catra. Why would they care?” without stopping to think about what she was to them. From what we see, she’s effectively their only parental figure growing up, someone whose affection and approval they, or at least Catra, desperately worked for. Unfortunately, being abused doesn’t always stop you from loving someone. It can make you feel like you aren’t doing enough for the person you love, like you could be better. I’m not a fan of the “redeems self, dies” trope, but Shadowweaver’s end felt like less of a redemption and more of an apology. I think it works. I do question why they couldn’t all go into the passageway and then have her block it off, but whatever, Plot

- Still really disappointed with the relative lack of general worldbuilding throughout the show, especially the first three, maybe even four!!! out of five seasons. Background characters only existed in places to move the plot along, when I really feel like they should’ve also been there to provide atmosphere and tell us about the world. There were tons of different races depicted throughout the show, and none of them (IIRC) were ever given a name. For most kingdoms and the Fright Zone, we never really even saw the citizenry. Catra, Scorpia?, and I guess Swiftwind were the only non-extremely human adjacent, non-horde clone people who were really given any role. Rogelio barely counts, he was played off as a joke (like I complained about before).

- Wish we would’ve gotten a bit more epilogue, or at least were shown more of the characters we’ve met at the end. Kyle, Rogelio, and Lonnie especially come to mind. We got a whole episode about them, they left the Fright Zone, and then..... nothing, really.

- I REALLY shouldn’t want Hordak to actually have a happy ending with Entrapta... Like I mentioned earlier with Catradora, there is a ton of trauma and abuse involved, and obviously he committed so many atrocities of his own volition and with no remorse, and has done almost nothing to redeem himself. but they’re so cute........ this is such a stupid point and I realize I just said a lot to say I think Catradora is justified while I have NO reasoning or excuse for this. The show just (obviously intentionally) played them up to be cute with each other!!! Really though, if they make another season or an extended epilogue or something, I do hope Hordak is shown as being punished for and atoning for all the incredibly bad shit he’s done. Shadowweaver got out of it by dying. Hordak needs to work for his forgiveness, or at least his freedom.

Adora sighed then and leaned over to press a soft kiss to Catra’s forehead. “Alright. That’s all I ask,” she relented.

But Adora knew she wasn’t wrong. She’d just have to be extra-vigilant and take care of Catra herself.

Or five times Adora knew Catra was sick, and one time Catra finally admitted it.

1.

Adora slipped out of bed before the sun was even up that morning like she usually did. She pressed a small kiss to Catra’s forehead and tucked her back in, exactly like how Adora usually did. She got dressed and ready for her morning run and Catra stayed sleeping, exactly as usual.

So someone please tell Adora why she felt something was off from the moment she opened her eyes.

This mystery was driving her crazy all the way until she sat down at their usual table at the campus cafe, still a little sweaty from her run, next to Catra, who sniffled lightly as she handed Adora her morning coffee and bagel. Adora knew instantly. Catra was sick.

Catra was sick, which is why her worry senses had been tingling all morning.

“You feeling okay?” Adora asked Catra, accepting her breakfast with a little concerned frown on her face.

Catra blushed (which was a sure sign she wasn’t feeling well!!) and looked away. “I’m fine, Adora. Stop acting like you’re my mom,” Catra complained with a roll of her eyes.

“Word, Adora,” Glimmer said with a little playful quirk of her lips. “Ever since you two have gotten together, you’ve become like, significantly more overprotective.”

Adora rolled her eyes good-naturedly. “Oh, come on guys. I’m not that bad. Bow’s way worse!”

“Uh, yeah, but I’ve always been a worrier,” Bow said. “You once told me to take a Halls and have a power-nap when I had Strep.”

Adora winced. “Alright, okay,” she glanced over at Catra worriedly. “I just don’t want anything bad to happen to you,” Adora said to Catra, sending Catra a painfully earnest look that Adora knew she was weak to.

Just as expected, Catra melted, some of her defensiveness sliding off her shoulders. “Look, Adora, I’d tell you if I was sick. And I’m fine. Really.”

Adora sighed then and leaned over to press a soft kiss to Catra’s forehead. “Alright. That’s all I ask,” she relented.

But Adora knew she wasn’t wrong. She’d just have to be extra-vigilant and take care of Catra herself.

Adora picked up Catra from her last class before lunch, as she always did with a smile. “Hey, how was your morning?” She asked as she linked their fingers together, leading them both to the campus cafeteria.

Catra shrugged. Her hands were freezing. Another point of evidence leading to the Catra Is Sick conclusion. “It was fine. My last class was freezing though. It’s like they just leave the AC on all year in there. I swear I’m gonna get hypothermia some day,” she complained as she shivered again.

Adora frowned a little and grabbed both of Catra’s hands, warming them between her own warmer ones. She leaned in and breathed warm air onto them. “Better?’ Adora asked.

Catra’s cheeks darkened and she nodded. Adora smiled up at her and placed a small kiss to Catra’s knuckles.

“Hey, I think my soup punch-card is almost full. How does chicken noodle sound?” Adora asked as they got to the cafeteria.

Catra sent Adora a suspicious look, “This isn’t about the fake me being sick thing is it?” Catra asked, her voice sounding a little rough until she cleared her throat.

Adora’s worry spiked, but she pushed it down before Catra could see it. “It’s about the punch card and the free soup,” she said with a playful roll of her eyes.

“Oh, I see, it’s your day to buy, so you’re trying to get a discount,” Catra joked back dryly, but gave into the soup idea.

“Oh, unapologetically,” Adora said as she started spooning soup into two tiny to-go bowls. “Plus, it’ll help you warm up. From your freezing last class.”

Catra smiled softly and Adora cherished the look. “Alright, I guess if you’ve thought it through.”

Adora had thought it through. And as they sat across from each other, their feet tangled under the table and Adora’s jacket around Catra’s shoulders, Adora knew it was the right choice. Catra was sick, and even if she wouldn’t admit it, Adora ould take care of her.

Catra was already waiting for Adora in the lecture hall of their last class of the day, her jacket in the seat next to her, saving the spot for Adora, as she usually did. However, the closer Adora got, the more clear it became that Catra’s condition had only worsened. As Adora sat down, she could clearly see the bags under Catra’s eyes and her red nose.

“Hey Adora,” Catra greeted, her voice obviously raspy, and her nose obviously plugged.

Adora’s worry was clear on her face. “Hey sweetheart,” Adora said softly, reaching up to feel Catra’s forehead. “You feeling okay, darling?”

Catra blushed darkly and looked away, moving her forehead away from Adora’s grasp. “I’m fine, Adora. Gosh, what’s with all the pet-names?”

Adora just kept frowning in worry. “Catra, come on. Are you really gonna keep this up? You should go home.”

Catra rolled her eyes. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m really fine.”

Bow and Glimmer took this opportunity to sit down right behind them, as usual. “Is Adora still on Catra about this sick thing?” Glimmer asked Bow as they sat down and got situated.

“Yes! And it’s driving me crazy! Tell her I’m fine!” Catra said, turning back to Bow and Glimmer.

“Yeah, Adora, she looks fine to me,” Bow said after a few beats.

“Word. If you wanna skip class with Catra, just say that. No need to make us all worry,” Glimmer said as she pulled out her laptop.

Adora groaned in frustration. “You guys! I’m really not exaggerating. Look at her! She looks ill!”

“Ouch,” Bow winced as Catra shot a cutting look to Adora.

“You saying I look bad?” She asked, her eyes narrowed dangerously.

“Double ouch,” Glimmer agreed.

Adora shook her head and started backpedaling. “Catra, come on, you know that’s not what I meant! You look great--”

“Oh, perfect, so you admit I’m not sick then,” Catra cut in.

“That’s not what I said!” Adora objected.

“Oh, so you are saying I look bad. Alright I get it,” Catra said and turned back to the front of the lecture hall, completely ignoring Adora.

Adora sighed softly. She really just couldn’t win today.

4.

Catra still wasn’t talking to Adora at dinner. She sat on the other side of the table instead of beside her, and hasn’t even looked at her once since the end of the lecture. Adora caught the look that Bow and Glimmer shared before they sat down on opposite sides as well.

Adora really couldn't stop alternating between being worried for Catra, and hurt by her snub. Especially considering ever since they sat down at the table, Catra had been rubbing her temples secretly as if trying to chase off a headache. Adora knew any help she tried to give would be brushed off, but she needed to help Catra in some way.

So, Adora placed an Advil on the table between them subtly before looking back down to her menu. She knocked her foot against Catra’s softly under the table to get her attention, then gave a lowkey glance to the pill before going back to her menu. Adora watched Catra look at the pill and then back up at Adora out of her periphery. Catra clearly hesitated, before deciding not to take it.

Adora sighed softly. She couldn’t make Catra do anything she didn’t want to do. Even if it was in her best interests.

Adora sulked all through dinner, trying to keep an eye on Catra to make sure she didn’t over-extend herself without making it obvious. Adora was probably not very good at this because conversation at dinner was extremely awkward. Bow and Glimmer tried everything they could to make dinner enjoyable, but even their cheerfulness had an end.

It wasn’t until the end of the meal, when everyone was paying and readying to leave that Catra reached down and grabbed the Advil. She took it while Bow and Glimmer were facing the server. Adora sent a thankful smile over at Catra and she rolled her eyes.

That right there was as good as a verbal confession of illness.

Adora stood and held out her hand for Catra. She looked at the hand, then at Adora and took it.

“Alright Princess,” Catra started, leaning a little into Adora. “Let’s go home.”

Adora smiled and pressed a small kiss onto the top of Catra’s head. “Let’s go home,” she agreed.

5.

All four friends made their way to the train station. Adora could tell Glimmer and Bow were extremely thankful Adora and Catra had made up. They both let out twin signs of relief when they caught a glimpse of their hands intertwined.

Adora and Catra didn’t talk the entire way to the train station, and when they sat down, Catra laid her head on Adora’s shoulder, the day’s activity having clearly drained her of all remaining energy. Adora turned her head slightly to press a kiss to the top of Catra’s head. She didn’t say anything as Catra fell asleep.

Bow and Glimmer who were sitting across from Adora and Catra had twin looks of worry on their faces. Catra rarely sat down on the train, usually opting to stand and hold onto the rail above wherever Adora was sitting. To see her sitting down, let alone sleeping, it was, frankly, worrisome.

Adora smiled at them in a way she hoped was reassuring. “It’s okay, guys. I’ve got her,” she turned to Catra with a soft look in her eyes. “She always does this. Tries to hold on and just push through when she should just take the day off. After the third time she collapsed in High School, I just learned to recognize the signs and catch her before it happens.” Adora smoothed some of Catra’s hair aside, hoping to make her a little more comfortable.

Bow was looking at Adora with that soft, watery look he got sometimes when he saw cute things and Glimmer had her combination grossed-out-but-charmed look. Adora smiled at them. “I’ll get her home safe. But I don’t think we’ll be coming to class tomorrow.”

The next morning, Adora woke at her usual time, but instead of slipping out of bed and getting ready to go on a run, she just rolled over and wrapped herself around Catra, using her body as a sort of heated blanket. She stayed like this until Catra opened her eyes much later. The sun was already shining through the blinds above their head, spreading cool, golden morning sunlight across their bed spread.

“Feeling alright?” Adora asked softly as she absently stroked along Catra’s side.

Catra sighed softly in defeat and closed her eyes again with a small smile. “No,” she finally admitted.

Adora smiled softly and pressed a kiss to Catra’s shoulder. “Want me to make you some tea? Maybe some oatmeal?”

Catra sighed again, this time more charmed than anything. “Yeah, that might help,” she agreed, her voice raspy and her nose clearly plugged. “Maybe a cough drop and some Vaseline too? My nose is driving me crazy already.”

Adora smiled, happy to finally be allowed to take care of Catra properly. “And you’re warm enough?”

“With your furnace body on top of mine? Yeah. I’m sweating,” she joked dryly.

Adora’s smile turned fond and a little playful. She leaned over and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I’ll be right back then. Try not to freeze to death.”

“You got it, Princess.”

She burst out laughing.

Adora can’t help but react this way when she sees Catra enter their bedroom, with, what looks like, glitter in her hair.

Her girlfriend had disappeared for, what felt like, a few hours. Adora assumed maybe she was just spending some time sparring with Frosta, or in the garden with Scorpia, or even doing a bit of archery practice with Bow.

But, it looks like she was very wrong about that.

Adora picks at the glittery strands of Catra’s hair and smiles.

“What the hell happened?” She asks, still laughing.

Catra glares at her coldly. “Sparkles did it,” she complains, rolling her eyes. “I can’t believe I let her try this out on me,” Catra goes on to say, sighing loudly.

Adora watches her plop down beside her in their bed. She can’t help but keep smiling. “You two sure have been spending a lot of time together,” she notes, with a tone that could be perceived as jealousy but was really just intrigue, at this point. “Not that I mind, you know, I’m more than happy to share,” she smirks, making Catra blush.

“It’s not,” the cat-girl stammers, looking flustered. “It’s not like that,” she rephrases.

And, at this point, Adora thinks that she rarely sees this side of Catra. The Catra who’s shy, who gets socially anxious, who develops crushes on glittery and shimmery girls.

“We just...she’s nice to talk to, I guess,” Catra adds on as her lips form a small smile.

Adora picks up on this reaction right away.

“You know what she told me, don’t you?” She teases.

“What?” the cat-girl sings, confused.

Adora laughs in a way that makes Catra nervous.

“She thinks you’re cute,” she reveals.

Catra wiggles away from her girlfriend, refusing the make eye-contact with her after her statement.

“Adora,” she whines. “Stop this,” she orders.

“Aw c’mon,” the blonde giggles. “Just ask her out, see what she says,” she sings.

Catra stays silent for a moment.

“I don’t even know if her and Bow are...you know,” she mumbles softly, “like us,” she finally offers.

Adora blinks twice, tilting her head to one side.“I’m not sure either, to be quite honest,” she shrugs, not giving Catra much hope. “Doesn’t mean I can’t find out though,” she quips.

Adora and Catra had agreed for a while that non-monogamy was always their relationship style. Adora had always been fluid, mingling with all kinds of people and attracting them to her with her charm. Catra had always been open about her relationships as well, wanting to connect with more people, especially since she turned a new leaf and left the horde.

“Please don’t meddle,” Catra tells Adora. “The last thing I need right now is your meddling,” she repeats.

And with that, Adora swiftly runs out of their bedroom.

“Too late, Catra,” she whispers, sinisterly.

For the next few days, Glimmer starts to behave very weirdly.

She stares at Catra, well no less than usual, but lately, her stares seem more intense. She watches her carefully during their double dates with Bow and Adora. And, whenever Catra makes eye-contact with her, Glimmer looks away very very nervously.

So yeah, it was weird.

It didn’t take Catra too long to put two and two together.

Catra corners her one day while she’s on her way to water the flowers in the garden.

The lilies look particularly happy to see her, well, as happy as flowers can look anyway.

It takes Glimmer a moment to notice Catra looming over her.

“Adora spoke to you, didn’t she?” She blurts out, without even a simple friendly greeting or salutation.

Glimmer shakes her head, guess the cat-girl still had a lot left to learn.

“What do you mean?” The sparkling princess asks, sounding lost.

Catra crosses her arms around her chest and purses her lips. “You know Sparkles,” she teases. “You’ve always been a terrible liar,” she confirms, as Glimmer avoids her gaze.

“Okay fine,” she admits. “She did, Adora I mean,” she goes on to say.

Glimmer knows that Adora is an expert at meddling and messing with them both. She thinks Catra and Glimmer’s interactions are quite cute and intriguing. Of course she’s been telling her things about Catra.

“What did she say?” Adora’s girlfriend asks, looking curious.

Glimmer blushes, still looking away. “She said that it’s okay,” she whispers quietly. “If I like you,” she adds on.

Catra’s eyes widen with intrigue. “And,” she sighs, slowly. “What about Bow? What does he think of you...and your feelings for me,” she wonders.

Glimmer smiles at the thought of her faithful and supportive partner.

There was no one who believed in her more than he did.

And he would not stop her from going after someone she liked.

“He supports me,” Glimmer smiles. “Bow supports me in everything I do,” she continues with.

Catra takes a moment and decides she will get to eye-level with Glimmer. She places her hand out for her to take.

“Glimmer,” she says. “Would you like to get dinner with me, sometime?” she questions, with extreme softness in her tone.

Softer than anything Glimmer has ever heard.

“Yeah,” the princess nods, as the sparkles in her hair grow bigger in size. “I would love to,” Glimmer smiles, slipping her fingers into Catra’s hand.

How I feel about this character:

When I first started watching Amphibia, I'm ngl, her being rude/ inconsiderate in the earlier eps didn't make me *love her*. It was only when the show made it known that she has those learned behaviors from her friends. As the show went on, especially in s2, I started to like Anne a lot more as the main character. Hell, I started to like Anne a lot more since the library episode in season 1. She's a healthy mix of sassy, stubborn and good hearted. I can't wait to see her evolve as we finish s2 and eventually 3!

Romantic Ships w/ this character:

I really like Sashannarcy! I don't have many polyships I really like but idk man, this one is super sweet! Why have a love triangle when u can just all date? Lol. I also inherently like Marcanne and Sashanne, however if you had to make me choose...Marcanne would win bc as much as I love angst, fluff gets me everytime. I've had my fill w/ Catradora angst. Gimme more fluff <3

Non-romantic ships w/ this character: Sprig 100%, I just really enjoy their friendship/sib dynamic so much! They remind me of me and my lil cousin when we were much younger. I like sprig a lot more than I initially thought so more shenanigans w/ him and Anne? Hell yeah!

Unpopular opinion w/ this character:

I guess this counts but it's kinda more of a complaint w/ amphibia in general. I know the show is very self-aware of its tropes and often used them to its advantage but, I found Anne considering the Plantars to be her family as well as the Plantars themselves (or more so Hop Pop). Like, yeah I want them to be a family and I like that the show is so explicit in depicting it as such but at the same time when it WAS said in the text felt waaaaay too early for me.

I liked the ep where Anne goes on the camping trip to prove she is tough enough to be a Plantar but I wish it was more of a gradual thing. Like have only Sprig call her family during the library episode then Polly later on then finally Hop Pop during the season finale after the climax as reassurance that he's going to take care of Anne because "they are family" which can be expounded upon in s2.

Hell, having Anne call Hop Pop "Mr./Old Man Plantar" during the earlier eps only for maybe a moment where Hop Pop snaps at her (in a light-hearted scene) to call him Hop Pop instead, even make the HP joke again after this, would have made me super happy.

Something I wish would have/will happen in canon:

lol, since s2 will be coming back let me talk about my wishes for what WILL rather than me complain about what did like the other asks rip. (And also in the above question bc I can't help myself apparently 😶).

I really want Anne to make a morally grey decision, maybe out of frustration from the combination of being lied to by Hop Pop, Sasha's whole deal, and Marcy's affiliations. Something that makes her question if she is becoming "like Sasha". I would really like the show to acknowledge that the girls are all flawed in their ways to varying degrees. What makes Anne a bit more morally good right now is that she is willing to own up to her mistakes much easier, so having to work through her stuff then turning around to help her friends is something that I would find very compelling.

the coronation: okay so... rightfully. there’s nothing i should be appraising here. adora and catra didn’t interact or bring each other up at all. but bro... catra’s new outfit... the best character of season four. i’m kidding but also she is so hot. catra seems to be dealing w the portal incident by framing it as a victory, since the rebellion was hurt by it. but also who cares. who fucking cares man. her arc this episode was about her deciding to make hordak her little bitch and design a new sexy outfit. that adora did NOT talk about nor seem visually affected by >:( yes, this entire season will be measured by how much i think it was a missed opportunity that adora did not get to thirst. jk but also am i? 500000000/10 for catra’s new look, 0/10 for official catradora stuff

the valley of the lost: god...... this episode. i know it’s like one of the few catradora moments we have this season already but it makes me LIVID that adora said that flirty ass line and catra never even got to hear it. anyway, let’s begin properly. double trouble seeks catra out and says they’re gonna be her new best friend. catra says “oh, yeah? i’m done with best friends”, making it official that she and adora broke up 😔 like friend broke up oh my god 😔 KFKSKDKD like we been knew but i think it is so dramatic and funny of catra to announce that she’s never having a best friend again because adora broke her heart 😔💔 i mean i know it’s also like sad but let’s keep it light ok uwu anyway. sigh. double trouble! auditions for catra! by pretending to be her in battle! which is great for them, but not for me and my hang ups about adora bringing back a flirty line catra said to her in season one and winking and then catra doesn’t hear or see ANY of it. sigh. let’s go through the scene. adora sees who she thinks is catra run in and say “hey! careful with the goods”, pouncing on adora and taking her down. adora tosses dt!catra into the walkway above and they get a cut on their face. not sure whether this is meant to signify adora pulling less of her punches around catra or double trouble just not being as agile as catra is in combat. it’s probably the latter because when you think about it, throwing catra away is much more of a defensive tactic than an offensive one. anyway! double trouble still does a more or less good job fighting adora as catra. huntara calls adora over and is like hi adora! could you stop fighting ur gf for one fucking second? we need you to do literally anything else. and adora (who has NO IDEA she’s not fighting her ACTUAL gf) is like :( wait no what really?? ok :( one sec tho lemme pull off this super cool sexy farewell thing before i stop fighting catra i’ve been practicing it for years u kno kinda been working up to doing this bit. and then she. grabs dt!catra after stopping them from running away, and grabs this trap thingy to trap them against the side of this wall. “i got something more important to do :) it was fun distracting you though ;)” and she actually WINKS and she looks SO PROUD of her damn self but it means pretty much NOTHING because that’s not ACTUALLY catra :( wtf :( the worst thing about this whole situation is that adora clearly wanted to do her whole super strong super powered thing and then go BACK to catra and like.... gloat or something.... flirt some more.... kiss her.... i don’t know. but dt!catra is gone because they’re good at getting out of tight spots, and adora is like “how did she get out of that? :( i wanted to see more of her tf....” anyway double trouble, scorpia, and catra are escaping in a skiff after this. catra thinks double trouble did marvelously. “i grew up with adora, and you fooled her” well catra. i’m very sorry. but if i were adora seeing you in that new look for the first time, i wouldn’t be checking to see if u were ooc. i would be.... hm idk.... flirting with you as hard as possible? like i know i complained that we never got a proper reaction from adora re catra’s new outfit, but i think we could interpret this scene as a lapse in adora’s morals <3 like she gave catra such a hard stare the last time they saw each other, and the next time they saw each other (after this) adora glared at her too, but somehow this time she’s all 👅👅👅👅👅it was fun distracting you ;) ;) ;) like ok. slow down there horn dog. “if you can do that, we can do anything. this is gonna be fun...” catra :( perhaps you would have more fun :( if you suggestively fought with adora :( yourself? :( 8/10

fractures: scorpia said catra’s name in front of adora... ‘shadow weaver! and at bright moon! everything is making so much sense about why catra’s been acting the way she has’ and adora’s reaction is so interesting.... she goes from this ‘catra....’ look to this ‘catra >:(‘ look and like it’s interesting to see catra’s psyche explained to adora like this and it’s clearly something that makes adora feel bad but then she remembers the bad stuff catra did and forces herself to focus on that. 5/10 for that alone lmao

beast island: bow being very upset and annoyed and disappointed in glimmer is a fun little parallel to how adora has felt about catra’s descent into the darkness. you feel doubly upset and doubly betrayed when someone you’re in love with goes against what you stand for, and the goodness you know they’re capable of but aren’t showing. 1/10

destiny part 1: ‘i’ll be happy when the rebellion and she-ra are gone for good!!!’ are u sure about that catra :/ 1/10

destiny part 2: catra gets into a huge fight with some dude and right after she sort of collects herself after barely beating him she hears “hey, catra” and she completely freezes up. she’s been so proactive with avoiding adora all season... and the moment in 4x03 nearly doesn’t count because she was acting specifically to get double trouble snuck into the rebellion. aside from a necessary interaction in which she was far away and removed from adora anyway.... where she was far enough away to smile and laugh and manipulate the situation.... she hasn’t wanted to see adora at all, clearly. and having this happen now, right after one of her worst fights, right after she thought she was going to win... “no. you can’t do this. you can’t come in and take this from me now.” “woah, i knew this would get a rise out of you, but still, you really are obsessed, aren’t you, kitten?” and catra’s standing there like 👁👄👁 until double trouble reveals themself and says stuff that :( hurts :( i am not going to repeat until i get to anything catradora relevant because i don’t wanna be bummed out ok hoes 😔 anyway double trouble becomes adora again and is like “didn’t need you... left you” and puts catra’s hand on adora’s cheek...... and then shoves catra???? rude :( 7/10
