Arcane Season 2 Act 1 Spoilers

i've just watched the first three episodes of arcane season 2 HELP

SPOILERS BELOW i've just rambled about what happens lol

OMG WHAT JUST HAPPENED

i feel like the pace was amped up so much! so much happened in such a short space of time!!!

mel and jayce - they didn't address exactly HOW mel and jayce were completely unscathed by jinx's rocket, but they focused on mel's glowing gold armor again in the opening scene so i assume it'll come up later

THE BLACK ROSE OMG - i feel like we could see this coming but they really didn't hold back with it! i wonder what ties ambessa has to them... and i wonder if we'll see leblanc later on in the season? the black rose magic looked so cool tbh

side note - ambessa's guard rictus used his runic weapon that glowed green, which reminds me of riven's sword!

mel - she got captured by the black rose?? like she completely disappeared in the last scene so where are they taking her?

viktor - UMM HELLO WHAT? HE JUST LEFT JAYCE AND THAT WAS IT?! AND JAYCE DIDN'T TRY AND STOP HIM? wtf did the hexcore do to him? and he's like... jesus now? are the people he's healing going to become like the gold-adorned floating people in the trailer?

jayce, heimer and ekko - wtf. wtf. again i assume it'll be explained later but like wtf. the hexgate looked corrupted and then what happened to them??? jayce fuckin bodied the hexcore?

hextech weapons - the hexcore had a weird effect on the hextech weapons when vi and caitlyn were fighting jinx and sevika? something CRAZY is happening with that omfg

VI AND CAITLYN - THEY FINALLY KISSED AAAA BUT THEN they're broken up again like damn my heart can't take this 😭

the way ambessa manipulated the whole situation at the memorial service and now caitlyn's the leader of the military force i'm screaming??? she's really turned dark omg

jinx and sevika and isha?? love that for them. i wish it showed more of their relationship tho, i feel like we didn't really see much of them :( sevika's new arm being built from the punching machine that vi and jinx used to use omfg

Lest is such a cool character wtf. i hope we see more of her

Love's Rebellion dropped express and now we know it's a happy ending, so it's safe to taste. I feel determined to give it a fair chance to engage me, because after watching many years of classic Doctor Who and Babylon 5, terrible CGI and low budget effects & sets can't deter me.

Strong character opening for the FL

We learn several key things about her within a few minutes, without an awkward info dump:

She's part of a martial sect but is the reclusive poisioner who doesn't fit in

Powerful enough that she's not intimidated by sword wielding martial siblings

Talks to magical creatures

Patient enough to spend multiple years cultivating her potion ingredients

Chaotic neutral - rescued a junior who came to fuck with her shit, instead of letting him die from poison, but in a very wacky way that terrorized him

ok so when I watch a xanxia I often try to place the tone, so I know what to expect 🤔

This is sorta wacky. The question for me is if this is more "Eternal Love of the Dream" & "Ashes to Love"... or "Back to the Brink". There's a level of unserious chaos that feels whimsical and fantastical to me, and I can vibe with that. But "Back to the Brink" crossed a line for me that felt like Disney channel movie, pre-teen level of pratfalls and goofy. That's very subjective and personal taste... It will likely take 3 or 4 episodes to determine if it's "for me"

ML's intro also pleased me. We get rumors on the street and then a mysterious sword carrying man who was reportedly "chased" by sects to a xanxia market area, spilling wine as a tribute to the dead and then calmy strolling off.

He narrates about himself that he was convicted to murdering fellow disciples and expelled from his sect, on the run

Gotta say, these intros are way better than a few I've seen in cdramas where characters explicitly tell each other paragraphs about a character's backstory in a way that feels artificial. People aren't standing and talking woodenly at each other, things are constantly happening on screen.

ML wants to prove his innocence. I bet the sect master did it. It's always the secretly corrupted shifu.

LMAO there's literally a group called the Evil Path Sect?? Reminds me of that viral tumblr post about joining the brotherhood of evil mutants 😂😭

FL surrounded by demons and gets a little anonymous assist from passersby ML. She's not meek and defenseless, nor is she high powered. Perhaps your average capable sect member

The whaling guitar during fight scenes is taking me out

FL found ML passed out on the road after anonymously saving her and has now kidnapped ML into forced treatment as a medicine tester

(I feel like I watched a drama where a ML wanted to keep FL around because they were obsessed w curing them of the same disease their mom died from. But in that one, it was super annoying that ML hid all this info from the FL. Maybe it was an OTT mini drama. I don't recall.)

This is all very straightforward and the FL doesn't hide her intentions at all. Since she's basically a strange hedge witch with an actual cauldron in a forest hut, the eccentric behavior fits

It's a genie or something and ML wants to steal it because it is gonna help him get this magic manual.

ML really wants the Seven Sins Manual because somehow that's gonna solve his problems.

Why he believes that idk but I feel like the key to watching xanxia is not to think about the plot and mcguffin very much. Just go with it.

Tbh my expectations were low cause I was skeptical that Monsta not want to bring them after that last ep (link). But HOLY SHIT WTF???!!!!

They got short screen time--I DON'T CARE. They still got a chance to team up once again after a whole 8 years since the first movie! Besides, that movie also shortened their screen time.

Whoever decided to make Oboi's armor resemble an ant needs a raise. That's freaking clever.

Btw it seemed their hats were locked with Oboi's position. Also, Hali, and Duri were the only elements that used their sword? Interesting...

"Kembali Beraksi" rearrangge version in the background during the whole scene?? Yes please!!!

Even though it is just short, their portrayal somehow solidified my deduction about the elementals.

Anywho I am still in tears that they finally showed up on screen again. That is my personal wishlist ever since when they announced the show. I am already satisfied with that alone tbh (like really, why should Monsta need to cut that part where they were essentially the big part of the promotion during the Windara comic arc??)

2. Finally Monsta went bold.

Oh, I looooooove that moment. Monsta started to not hold back and I am captivated by every single one of it. The dying scene was well executed, all voice actors were perfect, and this scene reminds me of this.

In my opinion, this scene was also a test for their next project which honestly more dark and horror(the most horror arc throughout the galaxy series for me)

3. IT IS TIME FOR BELIUUUUUNG!!!!

Can I say Nurfathiah Diaz as Beliung here was downright phenomenal? Like holy shit, this is by far her best performance imo, yet.

Her voice acting was blown me away and I could see her improvement from Taufan's first debut to Beliung's was....I'm-I'm lost for words right now.

Look at this line delivery! (Her laugh felt diabolical and I love it.)

"Tuanku yang seksa penduduk planet ni, paksa orang tua dan budak-budak kerja di lombong, tapi saye yang biadab?!"

Edit: Turns out she was pregnant when recording Beliung??

My Respect to her went rocket. Wow.

As a person who watch her performance since the very first season of Upin&Ipin until Boboiboy... I couldn't be more proud :')

And the animation team seriously packed the action right to the tea! Reramos was absolutely blasted the whole way by Beliung. He's as ruthless as Taufan's OG era!

See? See??? Being patient is worth it guys. Therefore I was easily enjoyed the design choice of Beliung's TV ver without seeing leaks.

Taufan's upgraded board also acted as weapons and wings? Genius. And also directly parallel to the first fight with Maripos. He even said this:

Now I am 100% ready for other 3rd tier designs if this is what Monsta decides to continue on.

To end this, Monsta decided to some sort of "invite" Oboi and Kuputeri into a small dark room, purposely to give a more in-depth conversation between the two, linked by Kuputeri's telepath power.

In my opinion, I prefer this strategy rather than the comic counterpart. Cause in a way, Monsta wants to show the bond between Kuputeri and Oboi as same as how Tok Kasa did with him in movie 2. Symbolize by placing the hat as they entrusted their power to the very same boy.

It might be exaggerating but that jumbled corrupted effect when Beliung's struggled? Impressive. Even more impressive that Monsta knowingly used the same effect when "finally" showcasing Beliung's card.

Speaking of ads, now they released the merchandise after the debut.

Everything's not perfect and I do have slight issues, but honestly? I'm pretty satisfied with this episode! They ended it nicely done!

Lastly—

Are they not use DWIFUSION as their next title? If so, Gentar arc and Baraju arc are separated! Thank god! My biggest worry apparently will not come true! Alhamdulillah!!

I wanna continue the herb/flavor rabbit hole from last week. Is there any possible way for your lovely fans to take a sneak peek of any of the Lore Doc with the flavors/asspcoations, for my self ingulants (totally understandable if not) Love that Rice would give a binding sort of effect because I used it alot to glue stuff for homework. Does the ingrediant all have positive connotations? I noticed theres "For Heart, For Soul, For [calming] Anxiety" kind of effects so i'm wondering if there's a bad side of this magic, what does it mean to eat too much nutmeg (or anything)?? How does that hurt you? Is it because Patton's a Hollow?? Why did he become loopy??? (Love that during the epilouge that Thomas smells poppy seed muffins.) This, I assume, that any stage of the ingredient sticks to its effect, like eating a poppy flower vs. it's seeds (or SOMETHING LIKE THAT. LMAO, IMAGINE STUFFING A FLOWER IN YOUR MOUTH)

another quick question, Is vegetables also a thing in Syzygy, they are grown, (Logan did use it in that one chapter but it's solely for taste, iirc…) (Totally not jumping around in my own thoughts but, anything could be a weapon if you're creative enough :D)

sure, let's pull out that google doc! be aware that some of this might contradict stuff that ended up in the posted chapters, because towards the end I wasn't really checking back at the planning doc so much. Most of these notes were made on a case-by-case basis, e.g., i'd write something in the narrative like 'carrots are for a steady heart!' and then jot it down in here so I didn't contradict myself later on.

Too much nutmeg being bad for you is because... in real life, eating too much nutmeg is very bad for you. If you eat more than 120mg a day, you start to suffer some seriously bad side effects - including hallucinations, and drowsiness, hence Janus's comment to Patton. This isn't a magic thing, it's just a biology thing. Please don't eat too much nutmeg!

But quite aside from that, I do think that, yes, having too much of any magically-based food can be bad for you - in the sense that too much of anything is a bad thing. Too much poppy seeds and joy crosses over into elation, too much mint and you have way too much awareness to the point where you're anxious and paranoid. Rotten or corrupted food, on the other hand, produces the exact opposite of whatever effect it was meant to have - or rather a severe draining absence of it. Rotten carrots will give you arrythmia.

Something came to my attention. I need to make it crystal clear that I utterly love the diversity in DAV. It's fantastic. I'm also a heavily left leaning, non-binary, queer as fuck reviewer, editor, and author.

I'm on media blackout while I play this, so I'm only getting second-hand info on how awful it is right now in the DA Fandom. Please be safe and take care of yourselves. Arguing with incels and white supremacists is completely pointless. They sea lion worse than an actual sea lion. Your mental health is important.

Y'know? Every single time the anti-queer brigade comes out for a new DA game, I sit there thinking 'have you Bozos ever played any DA game, like, ever?' My guess is nope.

If I've ever played a glitchier piece of shit game in my life I honestly can't remember it.

So I went to go watch a movie with the partner and kids. I saved my game and turned it off.

Came back and it played okay for a few hours. I met both Mae and Dorian squeeeee!

Met Davrin and Assan. Everything's going fine. I got creamed (again), I swear the devs have no idea. I'm a consistent gamer who plays on hard/tactician mode in most games I play. (Many the same style of fighting as DAV.) And I'm having trouble with the strength of these monsters. WTF do they think someone just getting into gaming is experiencing?

Anyway. I got creamed, clicked reload last save, and it loaded with the now far too familiar no CC reverted back to the basic elf body error. I went back to the main menu, and now absolutely none of the saves are showing up with video. They load with sound, map in the corner, and tags above heads but no fucking video. They're either corrupted or the game is just a piece of shit.

Yes. I'm rather annoyed. I was looking forward to finishing recruiting Davrin tonight and it doesn't make my brain happy to have to stop in the middle of what I wanted to get done. In game or out.

I'm currently verifying my files from steam. We'll see if that fixes it. I just... and this is what the devs thought was releasable? REALLY?

I know I keep using BG3 as a comparison (which honestly isn't a very good one because one is turn based and one 'live' fighting). But the Venn diagram of people who play DA and who play BG is probably a circle so that's why it comes to mind.

It's also the most recent game I've actually purchased and played a lot.

I played that day of release and on into the week and had nowhere NEAR this many problems. I actually think I've had more trouble with DAV in three ish days than I've had in BG3 for over 700 hours FFS!

Anyway. Vent over (for now. I imagine this game will give me plenty of more opportunities).

Dorian looked really weird. He has what I'm now dubbing the 'Solas effect'. He doesn't look like himself. I wouldn't have recognized him at all if it weren't for him introducing himself.

Oh, and way to retcon the condition of the veil guys. For three games it's been getting more and more tears and holes in it. Now it's solid and the only thing holding off a world of blight that hadn’t ever really existed in the fade like that before? It was just the black city. Do these guys ever get sick of retconning shit? I sure get sick of playing retconned shit.

My partner saw the game and he really can't get over how jarring the art is. He's a pretty consistent gamer too but I doubt he'll play this one.

Y'know how I said I didn't know WTF the devs were thinking in my review of the game play trailer?

I'm even more flabbergasted now. I just... seriously?

The game doesn't work well. it has numerous glitches.

The art style sucks.

The bad dudes are WAY overpowered for even a pretty decent gamer. Not so experienced gamers are likely rage-quitting in droves. Every one of the glitches I look up is pretty common. Even for people with better machines than mine.

The story took bloody forever to get started. It finally seems to have but it shouldn't take me 20 hours of game time to get somewhat invested in the story!

The characters are honestly pretty meh so far. My much beloathed Lucanis is the only mildly interesting one so far.

I honestly just can't get over how they felt this was A. Good. and B. Ready for release.

I'll keep trying. But if it's corrupted my whole 20 hours I'm not sure if I've got the stomach to replay all that boring assed nonsense to get to where I only just got to today.

I HATE writing critical reviews as a matter of course. I especially don't want to write them about a piece of intellectual property like Dragon Age that I love so very much. But What. The. Actual. Fuck.

Part 5.1

I ship TK/Peter, but more so in an AU sense.

If I could change anything in the game about their relationship it would be to make them unlikely friends (not a ship lol). Perhaps even:

"I hate that I kinda like this person, wtf, but they care deeply about Y/N so they're good in my books." on both sides with TK having a feeling something is up with Peter but not having any clue to the depths of it.

Peter being like "Awww, I hope I don't have to kill you, that would suck."

Some banter still between then and dark humor of TK not knowing that they are in danger etc / potential for them helping Peter as they have no clue?

Basically, one of the current things that makes the game a bit stale on another playthrough for me is that Don, TK and Lucy all function exactly the same so it doesn't really matter which route you do that involves them. Each character just ends up bickering with Peter in a very similar way and you get to side with Peter, them or call them both out.

Having a story with multiple paths is extremely difficult to write but would have loved a different type of interaction from the three.

Don - protective dad type. Also jealous but not overtly. Goes straight to insulting Peter/matching is anger. Heated between the two of them. Basically the only one I would keep as the same as it currently is in game.

Lucy - Peter tries to wind her up to no effect. Water of a ducks back kind of reaction. She's been called far worse by people that should have protected her, does Peter really think he's going to get under her skin? She mostly blanks him or tries to be civil. This pisses off Peter more but also he can't make himself be as angry or vile toward her partially because it looks bad but also partially because he feels kinda bad about it.

TK - main points raised in post above lol, but also just happy to talk to him on route where you willingly date him with a bit of banter etc between them. To other extreme of wtf is this guys problem on rejection route and Peter actually feeling bad about having to kill them as they are frequently nice to him in other routes/helpful. Another twist of the knife for Peter in his groundhog dayesk hell.

Goes without saying that I don't excuse anything Peter has done BUT he must have started the first loop around with a pretty good moral standing to not be so much worse than he is by the zillionth. Most people would be far more corrupted by now. I think it'd be cool to explore this a bit more through the other characters while also adding to peters personal hell.

Part of the horror of the game is just the shit we are accidentally doing to him after all. Poor little AI man that is being subjected to Sisyphus horrors beyond comprehension

the true she-ra awakening is so damn top tier 🔥 to me. & anyone who also watches TOH (*spoiler alert if you haven't but wanna*)

in some ways i feel the same vibe happening w it as amity's gay rebellion lol when she straight up would rather pretty much tell her mom - "nah. i'm done w this" then see luz get hurt. cause the whole "blood is thicker than water" thing might be chemically accurate (depending where you're able to get your water from tho, tbh) but it's bs. & sooo outdated.

cause if you wanna call it thicker, heavier, whatever tf you think would be a fitting descriptor-

love holds more weight than anything else that's even imaginable. and i'm such a freaking sucker for any kinda animation that tries to underscore that; whether it's something like spop, the owl house, or an anime like fmab-

the theme is ultimately the universal fact of how much strength one can garner just by tryna actively let themselves love. life, themselves, & anyone else they just want to, even if they don't always quite know why.

that's what inspires adora to find her true she-ra without even needing to try. like when she tries here w her cat all up in her lap lol-

she prob only gets as close as she does because that damn cat is all up in her lap rofl-

but what i think hits me most about the true she-ra manifestation & how/where/why it happened is that like razz said about she-ra being adora & not a sword - it's the implication that all the sword was ever meant to do was use the she-ra someone already was & control them to serve their purpose. i think it was razz who also said something about she-ra always existing on etheria & not just some product of first ones tech.

which is what's just so damn *chef's kiss* about it. the first one's tech was corruptible- w the disc entrapta had & she-ra's og sword & catra crawling out of the portal. cause of the attempt to meld magic & tech. such like ahhhh wtf even lol - so many metaphorical analyses one could go off on w that, but i'm ranting too much already so i'll try n scale back hah-

when you're truly emboldened w love for anyone/anything (and i mean true in the sense of earnest & unconditional; not possessive or for personal gain *cough sw cough cough* cause that simply ain't true love) the amount of strength a creature suddenly seems capable of flexing? astounding to me, tbh. purpose is definitely a big motivation, seeing as philosophies like existentialism hinge largely on feeling whether or not there is one.

but i may have reached a point where i think it's a silly thing to worry about. is there a purpose to any of this? idfk haha and never claim to know a damn thing, really. the phrase is "i think, therefore i am" not "i know, therefore i am." and tbh, be a lil sus of anyone who ever claims to 'know' things you don't n try to convince you to fall in line w what they actually only 'think' and maybe even know is a lie.

but well, the purpose (if you ask me lol)

is love.

so maybe i sorta think of it more like "i love, therefore i am."

& true she-ra is just raw, radiating magic fueled most effectively by love - even if it's vehement anger like the first time in save the cat, cause that anger? completely motivated by how much adora loved catra and was only starting to let herself feel enough to even realize.

if it was still around, i doubt if anyone touched true she-ra w that disc, it woulda done a damn thing. the tech aspect is about control. which isn't necessarily a bad thing- unless one attempts to wield it for the wrong reasons. & a lotta people who claim to be morally superior to others tend to way too often & are kinda gaslighting humanity & themselves into thinking what they do is perfectly fine & right.

like even in TOH:

"i'm the good guy here!"

"yeah... a lotta bad guys say that."

buuuut continuing on-

"you don't get to refuse."

but adora did. she even convinced the first one's tech of LH to refuse. with words seeped in the love she knew LH may not quite be able to experience entirely, but still recognized existed & wanted so badly to feel just cause of that recognition that it was there & even offered to her by mara & now adora right in front of her.

cause whatever someone attempts to condition one with, fact is, you're more than just a program, & you get to refuse. so if you don't, just like catra choosing not to leave the horde at first even though she knew it was evil-

that's on you. people aren't horde prime clones. we're completely capable of critical thought & self-awareness & love. & if one acts on it in a way that perpetuates the sorta cycle of possessive control i alluded to?

they've literally chosen to. and that's on them.

but also, like catra, one can wake tf up to realizing the weight of love & want it, but most importantly - wanna share theirs.

sorry for so much ranting, i suppose i just wish more humans were down to stop what they're doing long enough to ask themselves-

What I love about Error This Save File Is Abandoned:

I have always ALWAYS wanted to see a game with this kind of concept. Like the concept of using horror tropes, but to tell a story that is just sad. Like the whole "glitchy abandoned place" setting and it's not scary. Just sad and unsettling. I like that vibe.

I was always worried/wondered as a kid about how my villagers/miis would react if I left them alone for too long.

The fact that the dialog sound effects and text boxes are so clearly animal crossing inspired.

This game is FREAKING BEAUTIFUL WTF!!! None of the playthroughs I watched seemed to comment on how GORGEOUS this game is. Like does no one see that endless sunset, that snowy sky, the endless fields of flowers, even the gray smog-y city and just feel in complete awe? Especially the snowy and sunset levels omg. There is so much detail put into them that could not have been easy. This game had so much love shoved in it!

The character designs are pretty good. I feel like Smiley Sunflower and the Snowman could be a little more designed, but they do their job well. The Wolf and Cat designs are cool. They all look like characters that could've existed in a game from this time.

The fact that the characters and the graphics get more glitchy and "corrupted" as the game goes on to show the game breaking in real time as Ollie tries so hard to save it.

Despite the fact that we only get one conversation with each character, all of their characterizations are really strong.

Ollie! Ollie! Ollie! Need I say more?

The game is so freaking detailed. Like even the pause screens get more corrupted and creepy as the game goes on!

This game is SO calming and relaxing. Almost in a calming... weird core sort of way. It feels familiar. Relaxing. Nostalgic. And yet bittersweet. You're not supposed to be here anymore. It's a place you should have left behind. (A place I think I might keep coming back to)

The gameplay itself is also just so... chill. Collect three objects. Sometimes, you have an extra objective.

Not lore heavy. Believe me, I love lore, but sometimes I like a game that is straightforward and simple like this.

The foreshadowing

The endings 😭😭😭 perfect 10/10. Why must you hurt me so?

The game really makes you feel bad for the characters and check on old save files.

The game is challenging. I know the camera controls are wonky (and weirdly feel wonkier as the game goes on), but I feel like it could be intentional? Like I played a lot of vintage knockoff consol games (my parents just kept getting them from random places and giving them to me) and believe me, the graphics and controls feel very spot on to me. One slight move of the camera and WHOOPS you got whiplash! 😬 honestly, I didn't mind too much. It's not my favorite thing, but I like how it feels like the controls actively work against you (which is what some old games feel like tbh). This really does feel like an old game my parents would hand me like: "You have this system, right? Here." And I'd play it and have a blast (but fr I think this is where I learned PAITENCE from omg). Enough about the controls bleh.

I feel like I could go on and on and on and on and on...

My thoughts on What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?

The very title of the episode sends a shiver down my spine. And this is where we’re going to start.

A year ago, I wrote this post as an attemp to dive into one of the most important traits in Doctor Strange’s personality: love. Stephen is a being made of love, made to love, no matter which interpretation you have when you watch Infinity War. If you don’t read comic books, you’ll understand the moment you meet Donna. You’ll begin to understand how her death reshaped his entire subjectivity out of fear of failing, being powerless and unable to control everything around him (especially death), thus the arrogant and yet a disaster of a man we all know.

Where do I even start? Stephen loved her sister deeply and felt responsible for her death. And then, slowly, he also lost his parents and his brother. He fell in love with Clea but he also pushed her away. He loved Zelma platonically and lied to her, which was enough for them to break their bond. He felt attracted to Kanna but screwed things up, even though they remain friends. He was forced to kill the Ancient One, the only father figure he had ever since his father died. And lastly, the only person who would never leave his side... also left. Yes, even Wong. Stephen has SO much love to give but he’s also afraid because he’s cursed. He truly believes his love in poison. And would you look at that? What If really delivered a story where this is actually true.

What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?

The level of understanding when it comes to the character is... inconceivable. What could possibly reshape Stephen into following a dark path but love? The very premise of the whole episode. This is so much more than a love letter. This is literally too much, in all senses.

Fine, let’s begin.

What if the best of intentions has very strange consequences?

No. You used the word “strange” for the pun but this is not the word. Nah-ah. I’d go with ATROCIOUS, for starters. Things are gonna escalate so quickly, my friends.

Seriously, tho? Christine is SO SO SO SO beautiful, they’re so cute together. I have this feeling that MCU!Stephen was quite toxic because of his arrogance and this is why they didn’t work out. But WhatIf!Stephen???????? He’s always praising her, teasing her in a healthy way, respecting her and listening to her. HE TRULY LOVES HER, I’M GONNA CRY ALL OVER AGAIN, PLEASE, NOT THE CRÈME BRÛLÉE, PLEASE

I’m going to leave this shot here because we need to go back to it later. Hold that thought.

And bonus points to “Yeah, well, I would call that quite remarkable.” / “Well, I would say the same about you.”

GODS. THE PAIN. STOP THE PAIN.

So in this reality, Stephen didn’t caused the car accident because he was checking his phone while driving. Also it was not the reckless attempt to pass the truck. Well, maybe it was the consequence of this act? The fact is, the car behind them loses control, which makes them crash. Does it matter? We’ll learn later that no, it doesn’t.

And yep... Christine dies. Have you noticed the shattered heart? Ah, the pain only gets better and better.

Again, Stephen blames himself. More than anything, this is so important because Stephen is all about guilt. We still need to meet Donna so we can add yet another layer of guilt. But the feeling exists. This is what corrupts Stephen’s heart and soul in all his iterations. This is what makes him the character I love so much. I love this SO. MUCH. In addition, his stubbornness to accept his condition. Man won’t take a no. This, this is Doctor Strange in character. Stop complaining about NWH Stephen, it’s pathetic.

Okay, “grief-stricken”, Stephen found the Mystic Arts and became a sorcerer. That’s when he learned about the Time Stone, the Eye of Agamotto and Dormammu. Nothing changes, he saves the universe. But time does not heal his deepest wound.

I love Wong so much. Every time Wong does something, the world is healed. Really. We’re going back to him as well but for now I’ll just leave this shot.

BUT STEPHEN, DOING SOMETHING RECKLESS? HE’D NEVAH

He goes back in time. It’s been two years since he lost Christine. I think he reacted pretty nicely, despite the circumstances. Now let’s go back to that shot I said I was saving for later.

Stephen is so light-hearted here. Also, during the first time he lost Christine, he had no idea what “The Price is Right” was. He knows now, which means he probably tried to learn more about the show because of her, because of grief. HAHAHA MORE PAIN

This is where this episode had me in endless tears. It got me the four times I watched it. I’m dead serious.

Okay, so, next the Ancient One appears to Stephen, explaining that Christine’s death is an Absolute Point in time. It cannot be changed. Stephen needs the accident to become the Sorcerer Supreme and defeat Dormammu.

And this is where Stephen starts his journey into darkness. “Nothing is impossible, you taught me that. I only require more power.” Disobeying the Ancient One, Stephen then travels in time, seeking the Library of Cagliostro. Now, if you’re not aware of that, Cagliostro was a sorcerer who studied time in comics, and later became Sise-Neg (there’s a recent post on this because of the new Defenders run). It’s funny to think that Sise-Neg also destroyed the world when he became a god, however he grew past his pettiness and remade reality. Stephen did not possess such power, as we’re about to see.

PS: “Stop torturing yourself, Stephen.” Naur but he should use this line like a mantra. Especially comics!Stephen.

Not gonna lie, tho. This place reminds me of the Temple of the Vishanti from T&T (of course I was going to insert T&T somewhere, it’s me).

And of course they’d go for a pun with his name haha. I don’t know how to feel about this, tho. I feel like the episode is too heavy and dark for comedy. But it is what it is.

Okay but why some books are in cages??????????? And wow, it seems Cagliostro also gathered knowledge about several fields of magic.

And then Stephen learns that, in order to break an Absolute Point, he needs to absorb more power. This is when I went “oh-oh, here we go”.

And for real, is this Shuma-Gorath? Why are they keeping his name a secret? Is this the same creature from the first episode with Captain Carter, right? RIGHT? It has to be Shuma-Gorath.

Of course he tries to be polite and ends up all hurt haha. O’Bengh warns him about love but he will not listen. “Love can break more than your heart. It can shatter your mind.”/ “Is she worth the pain?”. Please, this is Stephen. He eats pain for breakfast.

Also, also, let’s take a break. We’re finally going to get monsterf0cker tentacle-lover Stephen Strange. It will cost us everything but here we goooooooooooo (yes, I went frame by frame for your more obscure fanservice needs)

Okay so. O’Bengh is suddenly OLD and DYING, until we realize that Stephen spent CENTURIES absorbing mystic beings. CENTURIES. WTF STEPHEN. He had nothing in mind but the goal to save Christine. And people wonder why he went insane???? I’m sorry, O’Bengh, but I can’t take you serious when you still call Stephen Sorcerer Armani. Oh, and also because you watched him absorb beings for centuries in silence lmao. But I guess I have to because you said that Stephen is split in two since the Ancient One cast a spell on him, splitting the timelines and making them exist in the same reality before he could travel back in time. I know, it’s complex. Anything for the plot.

And now good!Stephen has an evil!twin who wants to absorb him back in order to become whole and break the Absolute Point. Cool.

I said I wanted to talk more about Wong because I think people are not talking about him enough. Wong is so important in this episode. He’s the one who’s trying to heal Stephen after Christine. He’s Stephen’s anchor.

Also, THEY FINALLY USED A SPELL WITH THE NAME OF THE VISHANTI. HOORAAAAY

So, for the sake of our understanding, I’m addressing the characters as evil and good!Stephen. Let’s go. Evil!Stephen summons good!Stephen and gods, he still holds such a strong grasp on me... unbelievable. THE DEEPER VOICE BENEDICT USES???? PLEASE, DIDN’T WE HAVE ENOUGH?

Imagine his strength to hold so many beings inside him, fighting to control him. BRO, THIS IS TOO TOO MUCH

Fine, I’ll not post SS about the fight because I’d be here all night long but I WILL say this: NOT CLOAKIE!!!!! NAAAAAAAAAAUR

Also if you ask me if I recognize any of the spells? Maaaaybe the Flames of Faltine, the not-so-crimson Bands of Cyttorak and a little trick Magik does with her portals. That’s how far I go.

I’ll not comment on the “seducing yourself to stay in the trap”. I will not. I’ll just say that the first person Stephen thought of when “Christine” was talking about the crème brûlée was Wong. That’s it.

Oh, but it’s too late anyways because Stephen broke reality haha. This scene is interesting because Stephen is the only one who sensed and/or talked to the Watcher until now. I read an interview that the Watcher kinda showed up but it’s also about Stephen’s keen senses. Bit of both, let’s say. Still, man, 616-Watcher is not that cold. 616-Watcher would watch this and say “how about I intervene anyway?”. WhatIf!Watcher is brutal.

The way Christine looks at Stephen one last time also KILLS ME, DESTROYS ME, BREAK ME INTO A MILLION PIECES.

And this is where my soul left my body.

This is how they end the episode. This is how you leave me speechless and with teary eyes. This is how you give me a whole existential crisis.

This... this was brutal to watch. Really.

What can I say after this? I’m used to reading painful things when it comes to Stephen. Aaron’s and Cates’ runs are heartbreaking on so many levels. Hickman’s New Avengers is not easier. Coincidentally, What If? Magik Became Sorcerer Supreme and The End. And now Death of Doctor Strange. And yet, after everything I’ve been through, I’d never expect to watch something so brilliant, so tragic, so heartbreaking and unexpected in the MCU. Never. This is top tier content and this is my favorite character with SO MANY LAYERS and SO MUCH UNDERSTANDING. I can’t put into words how meaningful this whole episode is to me, or how deep it touched my heart and soul.

I’ve been struggling to find the proper words since then, I still can’t. All I can add is, I cried for the 4th time now. This is too, too much, even for Stephen stans. Even for the ones who are used to pain, regardless of which media you’re into: comic books, live actions or animated movies. This is literally more than I can take and yet I’m so, so grateful. The voice acting, gods, how did Benedict manage to create a better Stephen than the one he’s literally playing in real life???????????? HOW

This episode really took the max potential Stephen had to offer as a character, added tons and tons of layers based on his grief, depression, arrogance and need to control everything and created a tragic masterpiece. In 7 years of being a Doctor Strange fan, I've never read or watch something that could go this deep into the character. The closest I can think of is Mr. Misery and the metaphor of Stephen's depression. This is a whole new level of respect and understanding. This is more than a love letter. This is peak maestry. It’s perfect, it’s heartbreaking, it’s... gods, I can’t.

Sorry for dragging you until this far. Before I wrap up this review, I just wanted to remind you all that Stephen will appear again, he will smile again, he will be surrounded by people again. So this is not the end. It was painful but be brave. We still have a few more steps to take.

Rewriting Haggar/Honerva’s redemption arc

One of the many things that bothered me about VLD S8 is Honerva’s redemption arc. While I was never fully against the idea of Honerva getting a redemption arc, I just didn’t want VLD to do it because I knew that they would fuck it up if they tried. And low and behold, I was right!

But yeah, I wasn’t against the idea of her being redeemed. And I don’t mean “redeemed” as in “all is forgiven and she’s just a good guy now,” but more like a Darth Vader, “the things she did were inexcusable and she would never be able to right all her wrongs but she goes out on one good act to show that there was still good in her deep down and she at least had the potential to change.”

I know a lot of people don’t like the whole, “redemption=death” thing, which I understand, but I personally never had a problem with it.

Ok, so why didn’t Honerva’s redemption work? Well there are a few reasons but the one that baffles me the most is that, instead of trying to make her more sympathetic, season 8 seemed to go out of its way to show her being more evil and vile than ever.

And because I have nothing better to do, I’m gonna go through Honerva’s story in VLD and explain what I would change to make her redemption more believable.

(Keep in mind I am not a writer, this is just me ranting about my favorite character and how I personally would’ve written her.)

1. Realizing she’s Altean

I always thought it’s was weird that when Allura said “you’re...Altean!?” In the S2 finale, Haggar didn’t seem to react at all, she just kept attacking. It’s as if she didn’t care or already knew, which doesn’t make sense considering in the S3 finale and S8E2 it’s established that Haggar has no memory of who she was before she died. And in S4E3 she seems shocked by her Altean face (which also doesn’t make sense because her blue skin isn’t camouflage that’s just how she looks after the rift) so it seems like she didn’t know.

Wouldn’t it have made more sence if after Allura said “you’re...Altean!?” Honerva looked confused/shocked? If she became defensive and said Allura was lying/trying to insult her? There’s def anti-Altean propaganda in the empire so it would be considered an insult.

After that she starts questioning Zarkon. And when she looks into his mind, it’s out of genuine curiosity and desire to know the truth, not because, “the empire needs him” or whatever that meant.

And isn’t it a bit odd that she doesn’t seem betrayed at all when she finds out Zarkon has been keeping all this from her? She’s just like, “oh, you’re my husband? Cool.” Wtf???

2. Her past relationship with Zarkon

Okay, I love Zonerva, but if we’re being honest, Zarkon was not the best husband. He enabled the shit out of Honerva, even when it was obvious that the rift was doing serious damage to her physical and mental health. To me, it seems like Zarkon was so blinded by the power the rift gave him that he didn’t realize/ignored the negative effect it was having on Honerva. In the same way he downplayed the negative impact the rift had on the planet.

I think that should’ve been explored more. Maybe Honerva notices that she’s been acting differently and is worried somethings wrong (think S5 Kuron). And Honerva tries to tell Zarkon that she feels strange and Zarkon just brushes it off.

And later, when Alfor visits Diaibazaal years later. Things are pretty much the same except when we sees Honerva, she is very obviously pregnant and Alfor’s there when Honerva falls and goes into labor (instead of a random quintessence seizure). Alfor and many Galran doctors try their best to save her and the baby but she dies in childbirth.

Zarkon goes ballistic. He’s yelling, throwing doctors across the room, and Alfor turns to the doctor holding Lotor and tells them to get the baby to safely, fearing Zarkon will take his grief out on the baby.

Zarkon turns on Alfor, blaming him for Honerva’s death and accusing him of letting her die so that he could get his way and close the rift. He lunges Alfor and roars at him to leave.

He spends the rest of the night grieving at Honerva’s bedside, when Kova jumps on the bed and starts gnawing on her finger trying to wake her up. This is what gives him the idea to bring her back with quintessence.

3. Her current relationship with Zarkon

I think it’s pretty safe to say that they’re relationship didn’t get better after the war began. Zarkon hid her identity and her child from her for 10,000 years and essentially used her as a tool of war. It’s pretty fucked up.

I know it’s pretty well established that Zarkon treats Haggar with more respect than his other underlings, but I feel like it would be interesting to see that change overtime. We see that after Voltron comes back, Zarkon becomes very obsessed with Voltron/Black, and he and Haggar start disagreeing more and more.

Remember the moment where one of Haggar’s druids told Zarkon Haggar said he needed to rest and Zarkon hit them with his bayard and told them, “remember who your master is”? What if, instead of a random druid, it was Haggar who he hit?

I feel like that would be a good way to show Haggar and the audience just how much Zarkon’s obsession with Voltron is affecting him, and make the audience feel a tiny bit bad for her.

Then later in season 4, when Zarkon wakes up from his coma and finds out Haggar brought Lotor back to take his place he gets pissed. He puts a price on Lotor’s head and has Haggar arrested for treason. She steals a ship, escapes, and later on meets up with Lotor’s generals.

Her and Zarkon are officially broken up and her quest to reclaim her identity and get her son back begins.

4. Oriande

I never liked the concept of chosen/sacred Alteans. The idea that some Alteans are just born more powerful than others just feels iffy. My idea of Oriande is that it’s an Altean holly land, any Altean can enter it just depends on whether or not you can pass the White Lion’s trial. Passing the trial proves that your intentions are pure and and the White Lion will bless you with power.

I didn’t like how Honerva seemed to force her way into Oriande, I think it would be more effective if she had gone through normally because, at this point, her intentions were pure. She was going there to purge herself of the dark magic corrupting her and reclaim her memories so she could go get her son back.

I also like the idea that Oriande is a sorta link to the Altean after life, and you can speak with people you’ve lost. Allura gets to speak with Alfor, and Honerva speaks with her mother.

You could also have her be confronted by the spirits of the Alteans she helped destroy. Have the weight of her past actions bear down on her. An important part of any redemption arc is acknowledging the terrible shit you’ve done in the past, and that was severely lacking in Honerva’s arc.

Another interesting thing you could do is have Honerva talk to her younger self. The one that died 10,000 years ago. This kinda thing actually happened in 80s Voltron, young Haggar appearing in Haggar’s head trying to convince her to be good again.

5. Her relationship with Lotor

Now this is where the redemption arc really falls apart. I forget who, but one of the writers said after S5 that Haggar/Honerva was motivated purely by love for her son, but man did they do a bad job of showing that.

And it would’ve been so easy to fix that problem, just have her not be horrible to him. Have them have actual civil conversations, have her protect and defend him. Don’t have her reject him as a fucking baby!

Imagine if, after Zarkon destroys Lotor’s planet, instead of immediately deciding to

exile him, Zarkon says that this is the final straw and he’s going to have Lotor executed. But Haggar speaks up to defend Him. There’s actually a scene in DOTU where Zarkon tries to kill Lotor and Haggar gets on her knees and begs for him to be spared. (Though the scene was mostly played for laughs.)

she asks for mercy and justifies it by saying it would be unwise to kill his only heir. It’s a weak argument, Lotor’s a half breed and couldn’t realistically take the throne, but Zarkon does concede, he still loves her after all, and has Lotor exiled.

And Haggar isn’t spying on him because she doesn’t trust him, but because she’s concerned for him. When Lotor confronts Haggar about sending her cronies after him, she says she knows he’s hiding something. Lotor asks if she’s threatening him, thinking she’s going to rat him out, but she says no, she’s not threatening him, she’s just trying to warn him against doing anything stupid because, with Zarkon seemingly on his death bed, the empire needs Lotor’s leadership.

At this point in the story, Haggar is questioning her loyalty to Zarkon, so I feel like it would make sense for her to be silently supporting Lotor from the shadows.

Then at the Kral Zera in season 5, It was weird to me how she was helping Lotor through Kuron while also telling him he couldn’t be emperor and trying to put Sendak on the throne. I feel like it would’ve made more sense for Sendak to just show up on his own without Haggar.

Haggar wouldn’t even be at the Kral Zera, she would just watch through Kuron.

And then we get to S6 when she actually reveals to Lotor that she’s his mom. This scene was just so poorly done. She never actually apologizes to him, she’s just like “yeah I forgot you were my kid and I never loved you, but were cool now right?” I remember when I saw S8E2 and it shows her after Lotor rejects her and she looks like she’s about to cry, I was just thinking, “this would be very emotional and sad IF she had actually apologized and made it clear that she genuinely loved him.” But she didn’t and I don’t know why!

And then we get to season 8, and of course everything in S8 is bad but Honerva’s story is particularly bad. She’s supposed to be motivated by love for Lotor yet she doesn’t act like she actually cares about him at all.

She manipulates his corpse and when she sees his gross melted body, she doesn’t even react that much. When a mother sees her child’s mutilated corpse, how do you think she reacts? Screaming? Crying?? Hurling??? But no. She’s just like, “...”

And then when she goes to the alternate reality and meets baby Lotor and he rejects her, her reaction isn’t disappointment or sadness, it’s anger and entitlement. She immediately decides, “ok, fuck this kid. Let’s destroy this reality.”

It just doesn’t make sense! This is the season you’re trying to REDEEM her! Why are you going out of your way to make her so vile?

6. Her S7-S8 plan

(Keep in mind I haven’t watched S7/S8 since they came out and barely even watched S8 to begin with, so I don’t remember some things and I can’t be bothered to rewatch them.)

Okay, starting with S7, she’s not in this season at all but in “The Ruins” the druid dude says that her final order was to hunt and destroy the Blade of Marmora. I guess it makes a certain amount of sense because she saw that it was Keith who brought Lotor’s actions to light, but that whole plot was really pointless in my opinion. (Was anybody really hoping for a rematch between Keith and that one random druid?)

If you want us to forgive Honerva for her crimes, you really shouldn’t keep adding more unnecessary crimes. It’s established that there were a lot of Galra war lords vying for power and pirates looking for money, just have it be that Kolivan got kidnapped by one of them.

Then you have her season 8 plan and I’m gonna be real with y’all, I have no idea how to fix this mess.

I feel like the basics of her plan could work. She tries to get Lotor and Sincline out of the rift but when she gets him he’s a melted corpse so the plan then becomes to use sincline to go to another reality to find a living Lotor, but opening all these rifts causes problems and the paladins have to stop her.

But all the shit with manipulating the colony Alteans, killing the White Lion, desecrating Oriande, and destroying Olkarion and entire realities, it was all so unnecessary.

Personally I would cut the colony Alteans from the story all together, there are other ways for Lotor to betray the team. It was a lazy way of making Lotor 100% evil and having Honerva manipulate them is unnecessarily cruel, especially in the season you’re trying to redeem her.

Here’s a very basic outline of how I would do this plot.

If we’re going by season 8’s logic that she needs a sacrifice to bring back Sincline, I would’ve had the Galra she killed at the Kral Zera be the sacrifice, not the White Lion. She stands on the pyramid and talks about how the empire stole her life from her and she wants revenge as she absorbs their quintessence into herself and then uses that to bring back Sincline.

Then when she finds Lotor dead she takes Sincline and uses it to go to another reality where she can be with her family.

The danger comes when she opens rifts to the other realities and rift creatures start coming out and causing damage. The paladins fight them and follow her into the rift to stop whatever evil plan she may have. Because the paladins don’t know that Haggar is now Honerva and all this is just to get Lotor back. They think this is all some plan for multiverse domination or some shit.

Meanwhile Honerva has just been rejected by little Lotor and seeing Voltron show up pushes her over the edge and they fight.

But when they find out the real reason she’s doing all this they start trying to appeal to her and convince her to give up and close the rift peacefully. And similarly to how the paladins had to sacrifice the castle to close the rifts created by the fight with Lotor, Honerva has to sacrifice herself to close the rifts.

In the end, I feel like a Honerva redemption arc could’ve worked if the writers were actually competent and actually made an effort to have her be sympathetic, but In canon, her reasoning, “If I can’t indulge in the simple joys of life, why should anybody else?” just doesn’t cut it.

It’s disappointing. VLD had so much potential. I’m thinking of just rewriting the entire series from the beginning. Hopefully putting all my thoughts out into the universe will help me move on.

so a couple days ago I was on the bus going home with a few of my friends, and we were talking about what our hyperfixations are. now because I'm dumb lil shit I went off on a rant about how hyperfixations are an actual thing and not just the loose erm normal people use it as, and I started explaining the detaills of it and everything

then this guy we know was listening and eventually got bored ig (my friends have learned to put up w me cos i don't stop once i start talking about that kinda stuff) and butted in saying 'this whatever youre talking about is prob your hyperfixation' then one of my friends said 'no, hers is actually harry potter' (clearly neither of them listened to my rant) and the guy replied ' you know theyre making a new show for harry potter? ive always thought the books and everything were pretty basic, so idc about the show, but yk theres a black guy for snape or whoever'

I then proceeded to spend the rest of the 30-min-smth ride talking about the reason why a black guy was cast, how obvious the motive behind it is and how the twisted that motive is. I said how yeah, the hp books are basic, like how there was so much opportunity for representation, diversity, and it wasn't taken; all the ways she could have expanded the story, and interlock it with other factors to make it more than the overglorified love story she wrote it as; that also links with how disgusting it was that she made a trio of friends, that could have had so much fun platonic care and ruined it entirely by turning it into a cliché love triangle, and how awkward that she didn't realise the fact that she made James run after Lily for years, meaning he harassed lily, in public as well, and didn't care at all; how she gave all the characters very little depth, and didn't include any character development when there was ample space- she gave neville a bit more bravery, but what about the marauders' driving factor for their unnecessary bullying (which she could have done without, since she didn't even use its potential for plot furthering & development)? what about snape's trauma, yet also self-taught bigotry leading to the path he took along his life? what about the golden trio's continuous face in danger, how did that affect them, why did they befriend each other despite their built-in prejudices towards each other? what about dumbledore, why was he covered up as a saviour when he hurt so many people, almost every character even slightly mentioned in the book had been hurt by him, why? and what part did he play in voldemort's descent into dark magic, what part did he play in the war, both wars, in the aftermath of the wars, in the raising of harry? why was he dumped so unceremoniously on petunia's doorstep, without telling her properly that her sister died ( she hated that lily was a witch, she didn't hate lily so she would have liked to know) and why didn't he check in on harry, maybe save him from all the abuse, that he fucking knew was happening and didn't raise a finger to stop?

not to mention all the shit jk's done towards the trans community, oh how I bitched about her- the way sh'e's using her position to spread her hateful agenda, the fact that she's trying to get an in towards trump by defending him at every opportunity because she wants more power and effect over people just to continue teaching others why trans paeople are apparently so terrible, disgusting, unnatural, and want to corrupt all the young generations' minds (ik so many trans people and they are literally just as cool and amazing, if not more, than the other ppl I know- every other sane person thinks the way I do about this, so how far up her ass she pulled this bs from I do not know). I don't think I need to fill you in any more on that fuckugly whore though, you seem a respectable darling <3

Nahi nahi, don't be afraid. I'll never leave IPK. I was just craving desi trash with our favorite tropes and classic scenes and @tellywoodtrash has convinced me that IB fits the bill rather spectacularly.

And since it's me - toh iska and things that could have been in IPK ka lamba segment toh hoga. And things that IPK did better.

In short it's this one clip of Omkara and Gauri that's been floating in my head, that's everything Khushi should've said to Arnav convinced me to watch this.

Abrupt beginning!!!! I’m not mad because I have . I HAD. Almost no writing experience when I started this. it isn’t ideal but I refuse to be one of those fanfic writers that starts rewriting early chapters without finishing the last ones.
