drawing my Craig fan design for REAL!!!!! + stupid little doodles

earlier i made a post talking about how i was planning on making my own canon where Crarry could still feasibly exist (as well as having other story beats and whatnot) and i mentioned how i refined my Craig design a little bit from the last time i drew him. i finally got around to actually drawing a proper full-body sketch of him and what he's supposed to look like!!! i think i drew his eyes a little more far apart than i intended but. whatever.

he's my skrunkly. he's my baby. he's got perpetually bored resting face and a phd in Pocketbeasts lore. he's got messy hair and a few stray whiskers as he tends to forget his own personal hygiene, what with being a hardworking scientist who usually doesn't show his face and all. i redesigned his eye to have more of a prominent scratch on it that warps and distorts his pupil, as i felt like that'd be the most fitting for his facial scar and the type of injury he has!

and for fun i'm gonna do a general timeline of the evolution of how i've drawn this design over time, because it's actually changed quite a bit since i first drew him back in 2022!! (click for better quality)

god it is. so weird looking back at that first design. it's so..... why is he so square shaped............. lol

now, in terms of differentiating this Craig from Canon Craig, i've thought of giving him some slight personality enhancements that i've always thought would fit him. i haven't seriously thought about it yet (i am tired) but here's some basic little traits i want to make more apparent in his character:

Logical Knowledgeable Creative Naive Perfectionist Fearful and Cowardly Not a very high self-esteem; Afraid to take charge Easily exhausted Not physically strong; Makes up for it with his quick-thinking skills Easily irritated when presented with inaccurate/false information Easily embarrassed; Tends to erase memories when this happens Reliable Honest Earnest Nerdy; LOVES to infodump about any given special interest he has Focused, sometimes to a fault Detail-oriented Introverted

this will likely be expanded on and developed more, but these general personality traits are quite fitting for how i headcanon Craig to be as a person!

i love how whenever i get attached to a character or even just really like them, i always bestow my best headcanon onto them in high regard: the autism headcanon. gonna try to keep this short so i don't infodump for 12 hours but the major autism traits i like to imagine Craig displaying are issues with social skills (unaware of many cues, accidentally says things in an inappropriate way/unintended tone, takes things literally, misconstrues sarcasm as genuine statements), a speech affect (monotone affect), low empathy (doesn't feel what other people feel and has trouble reacting to and feels uncomfortable with certain emotions), has special interests (robotics and engineering, Pocketbeasts, cats, and he loves infodumping about them!!), stimming (rubbing the back of his head when uncomfortable, fidgeting with and studying a particularly intriguing object or tool very closely, doing little puzzles that make little clicky noises that are very pleasant to listen to), experiences sensory issues (joint pain, eye strain, sensitivity to loud and sudden noises, despises certain tastes and textures, often experiences shutdowns), has a strong need for a solidified routine (sudden routine changes can cause distress for him, as he needs more time to process his surroundings and has a strong need for structure in his daily life), a few motor control issues (he's quite clumsy and has issues with spatial awareness, causing him to bump into stuff. this has unfortunately resulted in him bumping his thigh on the edge of a table way too many times.) and a few other things i've probably forgotten about. a lot of these are inspired by a few of my own traits as an autistic guy myself. the dude's like a combo of Data, Barclay and Geordi mixed into one dorky nerd (apologies for any non-trekkie followers who don't know who those characters are :skull:)

Craig seems like the type of person who, once you get him started, will infodump to you about his special interests for HOURS and he still wouldn't even be done yet. just like me fr. also tiny little Craig getting his face smooshed

OC - Lark Penn

sometimes you impulsively make an oc at 2 am and then you keep turning them around in your head for the next few hours unable to sleep because theyre so skrunkly and suddenly its 6 am and you NEED to draw them. anyway this is my baby lark i love them very much

lark penn, they/them, 16 years old, from eterna city in sinnoh, so very tired. aspiring artist with a special love for sculpture. their parents are kinda busy 24/7 so they just kinda raised themselves (and they had really nice elderly neighbors who taught them how to cook and also how to do a mean right hook if anyone ever tried to hurt them).

they wear loose, long sleeved clothing with less saturated colors, and almost always wear a scarf. when they were younger they believed the flowy ends could be wings. theyre emotionally and socially awkward (like me :D) and cant handle people being around them very well. they always put in earbuds with music when they go grocery shopping (also me afdbfasffhhfcgfbn)

they really really like flying types. they met ven the zubat in a cave somewhere while they were stumbling along looking for cool rocks. they didnt have any pokemon at that point so ven kind of maybe poisoned them a bit (there are a lot of humans that come through the ravaged path and a good percentage of them dont do anything good. flash bright lights, break parts of the walls, litter, etc etc) and lark was like. oh. that sure happened. and theyre like "hey mx. zubat? uh. do you know the way out? i get that you poisoned me out of a sense of self defense so ill see myself out but im kinda lost also i probably need medical help" and ven is like. bestie you fr right now and shows them out of the cave where they promptly collapse and ven kinda likes this human at this point so they go get help. long story short, woah its lark's first pokemon! theyre besties!

umbra the corviknight was brought to sinnoh as a rookidee by a rich galarian trainer on vacation. sinnoh is very much colder than galar (in my hc at least) and the baby bird's wings could not handle it. consequently her battling was severely hindered, so the entitled rich trainer shoved her off to someone else (who happened to be lark. they were just at the right pokemon center at the right time) and they were having none of it. then they realized umbra would be in a much better home if they accepted her. ven proceeded to leave the rich trainer with poison and a nasty bite on the ankle. umbra has been added to the party! she adapts to the colder climate gradually and with much care from lark

lark isnt a battler but ven definitely is. ven is a fast and bitey little menace who prefers staying unevolved because they love it when people underestimate a tiny zubat and then get obliterated. also they really like being small and sleeping in lark's scarf (and they are kinda scared to become a golbat. they saw a big one being a bully back in the cave and theyre scared evolution will make them meaner. it wont and they know it, but lark doesnt mind ven napping in their scarf for as long as they want to). umbra...umbra likes battling sometimes, but she doesnt like it when its too intense. reminds her of her old trainer. not good. she doesnt mind evolving- her evolution into corvisquire was out of something like fear that she wasnt good enough as a rookidee. lark figured that out, hugged her, and told her that no matter how strong she was theyd always love her. she evolved into corviknight with more love in her heart, and she loves being big enough to fly lark around and to curl around them as they sleep.

~ Lawless and isolated beast physician ~

Name: Yobaii Age: Unknown. Looks both as if she has lived for a very long time, and as if she were born a few weeks ago. Birthday: Unknown Gender: Female? (She/Her) Species: Beast Nationality: Unknown, supposedly Chinese. Abilities: Provoking hallucinations, better regenerative abilities than humans.

Unlike what one may think, an encounter with this particular beast doesn’t necessarily mean death. If one does not pick her interests in any way, she will most likely leave. Though monstrous appearances can be deceiving at times, it is still not advised to provoke her.

Her origins remain a mystery, to both herself and everybody else. Unlike other beasts, which possess only sentience, Yobaii possesses both sentience and sapience. She is very knowledgeable in everything related to medicine, and is skilled enough to perform surgical operations in case of emergency, even though her methods are questionable, to say the least.

Yobaii does not possess a moral compass, though that does not mean she is sadistic. She is ready to do anything if it benefits her, including hurting or even killing other people, but she will not do anything unnecessary. Her greatest wish is to learn what she is and where she comes from, and a clan of half-beasts might be the perfect place for her studies.

She lives in an abandoned hospital not too far from the city of Lyon where humans rarely wander, but she does sometimes sneak into the city to get materials, tools, and food. Her first meeting with the clan of Ethuline didn’t go smoothly, but perhaps, one day, they might find common ground and become allies.

Yobaii is a beast with sapience, making her more powerful and dangerous than most of her kind. However, like Kadelio, she doesn’t have that much experience in fighting. Her strong suit is medicine only.

Yobaii has the ability to make people hallucinate, which she can use to disguise herself and others so long as the number of people she is causing to hallucinate is reasonable (around ten at most). She doesn't see a need to use this power for other reasons, but is more than capable of doing so.

She possesses the regular regenerative abilities of beasts. It is not as powerful as Nora’s, as she might take a month to regrow a limb. A rather peculiar aspect of her regeneration is that she will never regrow her body the same as it was before. If her arm were to be ripped off, it could regrow as two arms, just like it could regrow as a stump. It is unknown what influences the regeneration, but her theory is that it depends on how healthy her habits are during the process.

Yobaii’s arms and legs leak a strange black goo, but for some reason, it always seems to go back to her, somehow. Because of the strange forms her limbs have, Yobaii has a bit of trouble using them. She cannot run due to her feet’s structure, which is why she often uses a wheelchair when in the hospital she resides in, as it’s a faster way to move around. Her normal arms being abnormally large, she prefers using her “string limbs”.

These “string limbs” are the limbs that come from her sides. The ends can change shape and harden at will, which makes them more suited for technical tasks. They cannot be retracted. Her back arms only have three fingers, and only serve to either attack what’s behind her, grab something like a sloth would, or look behind her thanks to the eyes on the back of her hands.

By far the most fun OC to draw. I love her she's my little skrunkly <3 So far, she's the most enigmatic character of the bunch. Whenever you think you've figured her out, she'll do something that will flip upside down your vision of her, for better or worse.

here i played around with this goofy ahh design, and the fact he sounds so stuffed up.

he actually doesn't want to get surgery for his deviated septum because it doesn't really affect his breathing and he likes how unique he sounds.

just found out that those with a deviated septum can get congested, have runny noses, and suffer from post-nasal drip. i don't have a deviated septum, but i hate whenever i get post-nasal drip from my allergies.

i'm also working on "stuffy-fying" dialogue for writing characters with stuffy noses. let me know if i did well!

this one's a little harder to explain.

on the 23rd, i put some old t//erry/toons videos in the background while playing c//ookie r/un. it was really fun! i even stopped playing the game so i could watch the cartoons.

there were a few t-word and snz scenes in those toons, and i always had a good chuckle seeing them. after a couple of days, i went back to my usual background nonsense, because i needed a little more variety.

during that time, a couple of magpies caught my eye.

they were h//eckle and j//eckle. they're so silly, and yet so appealing. these two are inseparable. i love them so much. i am so sorry.

32. Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke? 

Post-resurrection/during the events of the game, not really. Obviously during this time, Rowan doesn't exactly have much life experience to draw stories from, and they're generally not a very good conversationalist. They usually rely on others to start and keep a conversation going, as they don't feel like they have much to add, plus they genuinely really enjoy listening to other people talk. That's not to say they have nothing, though; if they're comfortable enough they can usually fill small talk with retail horror stories, talk of how their apprenticeship is going, and/or a spiel about that cute dog/cat/cool bird/rodent/horse they saw earlier.

Pre-death or after their memories start coming back, though? Absolutely. There's all those times they accidentally set something on fire, or blew something up, or spontaneously combusted, among other repressed magical chaos, as a child. Or when they almost set the boat on fire on the journey to Vesuvia after they were boarded by pirates. Shenanigans they got up to with Asra and reluctantly Muriel as (pre)teens, such as the time they stole Rowan's familiar Sammi from an animal fighting ring when he was a baby, or the time that Rowan stole a bottle of poitín from his mam's bag and they all got extremely drunk on the beach. Honestly there's a lot of stories about Rowan being an absolute menace to society between the ages of 0 to 17. Around the ages of 18-19 his life suddenly became a lot more depressing and kinda kept going downhill up until he died (Muriel being forced into the Coliseum, Rowan's Auntie Gráinne dying of the Plague, their falling out with Asra, etc). He's a lot less likely to share stories from this time, unless he's feeling reflective or self-depracating.

Or drunk, if this is plague-era Rowan we're talking about.

B) What inspired you to create them?

honestly? being annoyed by julian.

it took julian a while to obtain blorbo status for me. he was actually my least favourite of the m6 after the prologue, believe it or not. even after playing his route and my generally negative opinion of him changed to become much more positive, i still kind of wanted to kick him in the shins. so when i started planning out who my julian route oc would be, my first thoughts were that it needed to be somebody who could wrangle this infuriating man and slap some sense into him when the need arose. and then rowan was born.

ironically though, rowan isn't really like that anymore, at least not much. he used to be meaner, snarkier, and a lot more passive-aggressive (sometimes just plain aggressive). there's some old drafted dialogue bits i still have of rowan just being an absolute bitch (mostly towards julian) that i still cringe at, because like... that's not my skrunkly. that is an imposter. a few weeks went by of him just being flatly That, then i drew up a conceptual design, and was told by mostly everyone that he actually looked really friendly. this was kinda the point where i realised that being bitchy didn't really suit him, or his relationship with julian (plus, as i grew more and more attached to julian, the less i liked the idea of having my oc be mean to him). so i started to rework his character, and slowly but surely the awkward, silly, sweet, stubborn fucker i have today started to form. about a month or two after initially creating him, i had the "what if he were autistic" lightbulb moment, and everything else just kinda clicked into place.

he's still a work in progress tbh (i will continue to work on and develop his character until i stop rotating him around in my brain, which i doubt will be anytime soon because i genuinely get so much joy just from thinking about him), but i'm really proud of how much he's grown from what he started as.

3. Favorite OC?

GAH THIS ONE IS RLY HARD LMAO I HAVE A LOT OF FAVORITES? My skrunklies just kinda. rotate around in my mind. Some days it'll be one character and the next day another...

BUT to answer this in FAIRNESS I'll probably say Diogo! I've put the most effort and care into him and he's come a long way since he was first concepted, I suppose if I were to be "known" for any oc- I'd want it to be him! I also use him in DnD with my friends (which has some REALLY funny stories) along with him being a main character in mine and my bf's shared universe and story so....the bias is real actually. Who am I kidding it's Diogo he's my favorite /lh

4. Favorite OC design?

I can say this one also changes often but I'd be lying I'm absolutely obsessed w/Opal's design. He's just very fun and vibrant and I ADORE how they look. Sea Slug :) I just rly like looking at and drawing him so GKNHKGHNK

Also he's inspired by RouxIs who's design I already love tenfold so once again Bias Is Real Actually LMAO

6. Describe your character creation process?

CHARACTER CREATION IS PRETTY WEIRD WITH ME I tend to make the "character" first before the design! I need to have some, idea where I want to go with the character so I can give them the proper personality/wardrobe whenever I work on the art.

So after chara dev THEN I usually move onto the design lol sometimes as I'm doodling a design I come up w/an idea for them and rework the sketch to better reflect it. Either way I like having SOME semblance of an idea of what I want them to do/be like before I start designing! It also helps me visualize some ideas before i just go into it- bc have problems visualizing designs and putting them to paper just out of the blue

Working on the art side of a design is. hard NGHKGNKH and I'm not immune to looking up references- esp for outfits bc those are HARD to design. Good Lird. Usually sketching the base design is the easiest for me bc I have a general good idea what I'm going for in terms of appearance, but when I move onto colors I GET REALLY PICKY LOL. I can spend like. 20 minutes trying to decide between two almost near identical colors. Colors. (derogatory)

But to get my ass to work on the art of a design I have to be in the right headspace bc I am. VERY selective with how I design characters bc a lot of times I can't properly convey whats in my head onto the character bc I can visualize them up there in the brain and through words but I can't get it down on paper. (Which is why im VERY thankful for Rob, I can explain what I'm going for in detail and he's REALLY GOOD at drawing from that and I appreciate it a lot. He helps me a lot w/the art side of designing) Art hard <3 I am a better writer <3 GNHKGHKGHGH

Character creation wild and I do not always follow this process LMAO esp when it's a character that I like, bought from someone (Like Rob's adopts or smth) then I just do the chara dev part but even then I'm picky w/which designs I get that way bc I need to make sure I CAN use them as a character and I don't just like the design and have 0 ideas for them. Bc being able to use and write about a character and talk about them is more important to me than just having something I like visually but unable to really "do" anything with them!
