The four horses of the blogging apocalypse
Tumblr media
After experimenting with cross-posting to various platforms over the last few weeks, I thought it might not be amiss to scribble down a few thoughts about the platforms I’ve been cross-posting to, should anybody else consider doing something similar.
Tumblr
In the late 2000s, Tumblr was a mighty force — a melting pot of the “social internet”, where millions emptied their head through text, photos, quotes, GIFs, and more — a torrent of both the vital and the inconsequential.
Under David Karp’s stewardship, Tumblr was very much the anti-hero of the Web 2.0 explosion — fighting censorship and oppression at every turn.
Today, following sell-outs to first Yahoo and then Automattic, Tumblr seems a little lost, and a pale shadow of it’s former self. In and of itself it hasn’t changed — Automattic have worked hard to restore it to former glories — but much of the community that could once be found there has moved on to the innumerable social platforms that followed.
Substack
Over the last several years Substack have seemed hell-bent on disrupting the online publishing industry — creating a straight-forward runway for authors to monetise content, and offering perhaps best-in-class email subscription functionality for free.
The only problem with Substack is a similar one to Medium. They have invested heavily in paying luminaries of the writing and journalism fields to fill their platform with wonderful content — selling the dream of rubbing shoulders with the authors and columnists you’ve been reading for decades. Medium pulled the same trick several years ago.
I don’t think most authors chasing the idea of paid subscribers realise how much work is required in marketing their words in order to draw a subscription base large enough to make any sort of respectable return. Substack will not sell the existence of your writing for you.
Don’t get me wrong — Substack is brilliant. The platform is iterating quickly, and disrupting the status quo at every turn. I think perhaps the only problem is so many become disenfranchised that they are not attracting readers by the simple existence of their words on the platform. Marketing yourself is hard work.
Medium
Several years ago, Medium set out to disrupt online publishing — providing a platform through which beautiful articles could be authored, curated, and collected into publications, with an interesting revenue model where authors could pay to put their writing behind a pay-wall, and earn a slice of the subscription fees of paying readers through their interaction with said writing.
It worked wonderfully, and through the example set by a number of in-house publications, Medium seemed to have solved the problem of marketing too. I had several articles go viral, read by tens of thousands of people — some of whom became subscribers to me, rather than just the publications they had discovered me within.
Medium’s problems have been two-fold.
Similarly to Substack, Medium paid well known writers and organisations significant retainers to use the platform. While this attracted enormous interest, it also created a “them and us” dynamic between those with retainers, and those without.
Perhaps the bigger problem has been the significant number of authors that set out to game the revenue model — churning out articles like a sausage machine — relentlessly filling the platform with posts selling the dream of how “you too can make a living as an author”.
Of course along the way the venture capital that funded the integration of various tent-pole publications and their leading writers into the Medium platform has ran dry, and the platform has slowly become a huge barrel of paying fish writing articles targetted at each other — eating each other’s food.
Wordpress
While every other platform comes and goes — disrupting, promising, standing in the sun for a while, and then quietly falling into shadow —  Wordpress quietly continues.
Wordpress was here in the beginning, and it will probably be here in the end. If often-quoted statistics are correct, various versions of Wordpress support 40% or more of the “published Web”.
The one thing that differentiates Wordpress from the various disruptors is that Automattic never set out to build a platform in and of itself; they set out to build the infrastructure on which a platform could be built — and to support that infrastucture they set out a foundation to stand the test of time. Quite literally: “The Wordpress Foundation”.
Automattic has a long history of “doing the right thing” — of slowly iterating the Wordpress blogging platform, and making it available in a number of ways — among them as a PHP script to be installed on a webserver, and as a hosted service where anybody can sign up and have a blog of their own in minutes.
Back in the day I ran my own webserver with Wordpress installed. When “wordpress.com” (the hosted service) came about, I switched pretty quickly. I didn’t want to be spending my time updating web servers, or upgrading Wordpress each time a new version was launched. I just wanted to write.
The huge benefit Wordpress has over any other solution has always been that it’s a known quantity. You can buy books on Wordpress. Entire blogs and YouTube channels exist, teaching newcomers how to build out their web presence, and how best to use the tools at their disposal. For a time Automattic even dabbled with “Wordpress University”.
It’s hard to draw a line between “Wordpress”, and “the Web”, such is it’s ubiquity. It really is everywhere — and not without good reason.
My only misgiving is about wordpress.com — the hosted service. If you stand far enough away, you realise that wordpress.com is a walled garden just like any other — blogs hosted there typically only attract readers that also write on the platform. It’s the age old story about marketing again — that no platform is going to expend effort on your behalf to attract readers — it’s on you to do that.

Doctor Who: Giggle special review
Doctor Who: Giggle special review
Warning: This is a spoiler review and there are spoilers for the latest Doctor Who special along with the Netflix animated series Castlevania. You probably should not read this review unless you have already seen the episode. I am going to be writing this as a stream of consciousness so it may not be entirely coherent if you haven't watched the episode.
I just got done watching The Doctor Who episode Giggle and that was the best Doctor who episode I've seen since The Doctor Dances. It was sweet, it was hopeful. And I nearly teared up out of happiness to see David Tennant's version of The Doctor actually get a happy ending. It was like that surprise ending for Dracula and Lisa in Netflix's Castlevania. All that time, traveling, wandering through the stars and time and all that The Doctor needed was an adoptive family that loves him. That was so sweet. I like the idea of "bi-regeneration." Okay, where to start? Neil Patrick Harris plays the villain known as The Toymaker, an old Doctor Who villain, a God-like (maybe actually a God) entity that can alter reality on whim. After The Toymaker forces The Doctor to regenerate, The Doctor actually splits into two incarnations. The newest actor to play The Doctor, and David Tennant. And The TARDIS (his time and space ship) was even split in two to accommodate them). David Tennant's Doctor (The Doctor's tenth and fourteenth incarnation, if you disinclude John Hurt's War Doctor, which would actually make him number fifteen) stays in England with Donna (played by fifty-four-year-old Catherine Tate) and her family. I note her age in case a non-Doctor Who fan mistakenly thinks she's a child. This version of The Doctor has a platonic love for Donna and Donna and her family adopt him like a long-lost brother and he lives with them now in a shared house with Donna, her mother, her grandfather, and Donna's daughter. It is so damn sweet seeing him sit down to supper with them! The other Doctor, the fifteenth incarnation, goes off to travel through time and space. Their TARDIS's are identical except that his has a jukebox and is wheelchair accessible. Ncuti Gatwa plays this latest version of The Doctor. I was so worried this would be depressing but no, this was quite the opposite. This was so good and so hopeful and so warm. I hadn't felt this much of a positive emotion from a Doctor Who episode since way back in 2006 when I saw "The Doctor Dances." I love the idea of bi-regeneration. The Doctor technically just gave birth to himself, he split his own soul in two so a version of himself can have a happily ever after (at least for now) and the other can go off and have his adventures. I wonder if anyone has kept track of how many times and ways The Doctor has technically given birth to a version of himself. There was that incident with Matt Smith's Doctor and there was that time he was cloned and the clone came out female (The Doctor's daughter, who ironically became David Tennant's wife and is the real life daughter of a previous Doctor actor for Doctor Who). And there was that "human" version of David Tennant's Doctor that went off with Rose. I'm actually very satisfied by the idea that both number 14 (David Tennant) and 15 (Ncuti Gatwa) are both genuinely The Doctor. I would love to follow both their adventures. I hope the show doesn't eventually kill one of them in a way that he can't regenerate just so the show can return to the status quo. For now though I am very satisfied with that sweet, wholesome ending. It was like a warm bowl of chicken soup for the soul. Bonus points for the foreshadowing of The Master's (Classic Who villain) Return since he was locked inside the Toymaker's gold tooth.
I hope it's MIssy (Mistress). I loved the Missy incarnation of The Master. I saw that it was a woman's hand who picked up the tooth. (or at least it looked feminine with the nail polish).
My only complaints about the episode are pretty minor. 1. Neil Patrick Harris's fake German accent got annoying after a while. Especially the random Gs he kept adding to words. My second complaint is the Disney+ subtitles got lazy at the most random points. It switched to saying "Speaks German" when he said "Wunderbar." Even if you don't speak German the context makes it obvious he was saying "Wonderful!" That was just lazy. And it did the "Speaks German" subtitles again when he said something simple like "ich bin" (I am) or something else equally simple. And it's still weird seeing the Disney logo at the end of a Doctor Who episode. Those are petty complaints. I loved this episode. I'm still on a psychological high because I expected something sad and dreary to happen like a tragic regeneration (I'm so glad 14 wasn't alone for it. That was so sweet that his friends came to his sides so he wouldn't "die" alone). I half-thought Donna might get killed or a fate worse than death. No, instead that was beautiful. And when the newer version of The Doctor hugged the previous one because he understood precisely what he was feeling... I'm going to make a quick shout out to the Neil Gaiman's The Sandman fandom. You see that! You see what just happened there? THAT is why I "non-sexual" ship Daniel's version of Dream with Morpheus! THAT is what I want for him! That was just... so good...
I hope they don't screw up the Christmas episode. I don't know how they can top that.

You know, this
Is actually what makes me so angry.
I don’t think there is a skew, the fundamental problem is that the numbers are close. That among those who are likely to vote, it’s just too close to call.
And it shouldn’t be. The sheer amount, size, and publicity of Republican crimes should make this not a close race.
But what I think this really says, trying to change it from numbers to people, is that Trump was right. He COULD have shot someone on the street while on camera and it wouldn’t have made a lick of difference to his constituency. There’s literally nothing at this point that will change people’s minds. Republicans can try to overthrow the government, steal personal rights, wreck the economy, destroy fair voting, and do it all proudly without any meaningful backlash. Oh, people will hem and haw and consider but at the end of the day, if you were willing to vote for a Republican BEFORE January 6th you’re going to vote Republican now.
Which means the hope is pretty literally turn out. Republicans aren’t shifting, Democrats aren’t shifting, all of us are doubling down. It’s on the 40%+ of the populace that usually doesn’t vote in midterms. They’re the ONLY wild card.
The norm in elections is for the President’s party to lose in midterms. That’s what happens. Like clockwork. It just frustrates me that this isn’t a normal year. It shouldn’t be a normal year. Nothing about this should be normal. But it is. At least for us likely voters.
And no amount of money is going to change that. This isn’t about Republicans vs. Democrats. Not really. This is about likely vs unlikely voters.
We know what we likely voters are going to do. We’re going to hem and haw and scream and tear at our hair and then hand the government back to the people who tried and are still trying to destroy it. Because we’re the given. We’re business as usual. And if business as usual happens, yeah, it’s too close to call but that likely means Republicans win. And I just want to strangle someone for that.
What unlikely voters are going to do, we don’t know. They may be in the exact same position as us. Hemming and hawing and tearing at the hair but at the end of the day going right back to normal and not voting. Handing the government right back to the people who want to break it.
You wanna know if you can make a difference this year, it’s real easy. Did you vote four years ago. Not two, four, the last midterm. If you didn’t, you’re an unlikely voter and your vote is inherently going to be a deviation from the norm. You’re the biggest constituency in the country. You actually have the most elective power. But only if you use it. And most don’t. That’s why you’re unlikely voters.
Please, for the love of anything you value about this country, go vote. You can go vote early this weekend. The election is Tuesday. These 4 days are it.
This is literally your chance to make a difference. To tell the status quo go fuck itself. Because if Republicans don’t win this midterm, it will be only the third time since 1945 that the flip hasn’t run like clockwork. Republicans winning IS the status quo. It has been since longer than probably anyone who reads this has been alive. We’re just going to do what we always do. I can scream all I want, we know what I am going to do and it has been accounted for. What are you going to do?

Duke and Jason
The interesting thing about Duke’s relationship with Jason is that though he is a part of the family, he wasn’t really there for a lot of the divisive things that happened when Jason came back. Duke also never knew Jason beforehand or encountered the ghost of previous Jason; Dick, Babs and Bruce knew Jason before, Tim, Cass, Steph, and almost everyone else had to live with the ghost of Jason’s death haunting their moves and their relationships with Bruce, before Jason came back. Duke, meanwhile, joined after Jason’s return, and for him the status quo has always been what it is. To Jason, having someone who never thought of him as different than the Jason he is would be very important to him. Despite Duke’s knowledge of the past, sometimes distance makes the biggest difference - and Duke has the luxury of not having any emotional entanglements into who Jason was.
In addition, Duke comes at a time where Jason is able to openly admit he has brothers - and very much considers him to be one.
Tumblr media
Artemis: Honestly? It was like kissing my brother. If I had one. Jason: Thank god! I was thinking the same thing. And I have four.
On Jason’s side, he seems to have decided to take a sort of mentorship role for Duke. The main instance is in the Roll Call short story in which Jason and Duke do a fight simulation on a very high level and Jason shares his hard-won wisdom.
Tumblr media
Panel One -  Jason: Lesson number one: quips and retorts should only be used for distraction.
Panel Two- Jason: Find your own way. Because following in the Batman’s footsteps and being something that you’re not -- is the fastest way to get killed
Panel Three- Jason: No. That’s a given. Lesson number four? No matter how you feel or what you think... you’re never alone
Jason makes sure to tell Duke that no matter what, he’s never alone. Jason wants Duke to know that no matter what, he will always have his back but it means more than that. Jason had long periods of time where he thought he was abandoned, and he lashed out as a result; hurting himself and others. A lot of the advice Jason gives Duke is not only useful things, but things Jason wished that he knew when he was younger. It seems to imply that Jason might see a bit of himself in Duke, and that he sees it as his responsibility to help Duke become something better.
Tumblr media
Jason: -- How many times are you planning to die, Duke?
Roll call also has a scene that drives me insane in which Jason recreates being beaten to death by the Joker in front of Duke. It's pretty ambiguous whether or not this was on purpose. If it was on purpose, was it to show Duke what happened to him, was it to confront his fears on his own terms with his brother next to him? If it was by accident, did he brush it off to make Duke feel safe, or was he okay with Duke seeing him like that because he trusts Duke? Either way, Jason is comfortable enough around Duke to feel safe with him seeing one of his biggest traumas.
Tumblr media
Joker (standing over Jason with a crowbar): I guess it’s over your dead body
And, after they finish the simulation (and Duke of course jumps right in to help Jason), Jason's right back to joking with Duke.
Tumblr media
Jason: Heads up Narrows, more clay bastards on the horizon. Batwoman and her crew usually warm up in the mud room on a level four practive setting.
Duke continues to help save Jason, notably in the Cheer’s story arc.
Tumblr media
Jason: ... Have your back (urban legends 6)
(Although, it equally drives me insane that despite Duke helping Jason and Bruce in this arc, he’s the only member of the family to not be in both Jason and Bruce’s dream worlds which drives a lot of questions - do they not want Duke to have been a vigilante and thus part of the family? Has Duke's entrance into the family been too recent for them to add them to their fairy dream worlds? Is the author simply forgetting to mention Duke being there even though Duke is in the comic saving Jason and Bruce? My personal interpretation is because Cheer deals very much with Jason wanting the Joker dead, a dead joker means that Duke’s parents were never Jokerized, and thus Duke couldn't be a part of the family in a dream world where Joker was dead.)
Their relationship with what the Joker did to them is another huge parallel between Duke and Jason. When the Joker killed Jason, and when Duke’s parents were Jokerized mark a difference in both of their lives - now divided in the before Joker touched their lives and after. It's interesting to see how both Jason and Duke expected Batman to save them initially, and ended up needing to take their lives into their own hands, though there are huge differences in the way Jason fought for revenge, when Duke’s feelings were expended on fixing his parents and not towards the joker. Of course, the two situations are not completely comparable, but it is a similarity that impacts their lives.
Tumblr media
Duke (to Batman): I know you can save them. My parents. All of them. Just like you always do.
They also have nicknames for each other! Jason calls Duke “Narrows”, which is a pretty outspoken acknowledgment of some of their similarities, being children from Gotham.
Tumblr media
Panel One - Jason: Narrows, meet crime alley. we do things differently. Find a functional outfit.
Panel Two - Duke: Need help? Jason: No, narrows, I don’t
It is important to note that Duke and Jason’s living situation are not identical, though they are similar - the Narrows is often neglected in Gotham.
Tumblr media
Jim Gordon (about the Narrows) : Its Gotham’s poorest neighborhood. Made up of nearly a dozen diverse communities. Its been let down over and over by the mechanisms put in place in order to protect it. Under-protected. Under-represented. It’s been burned so many times you are practically feel the embers everywhere.
However, as opposed to Jason, Duke did have a stable family as a child, his mom was a social worker and his dad was a construction worker. After his parents were jokerized, Duke had to live in a series of foster homes, so both Jason and Duke (along with Dick) were impacted by the childcare system in Gotham.
In addition to Jason being comfortable sharing himself with Duke, Duke is able to get by with a lot of jokes about sensitive topics in Jason’s life.
Tumblr media
Duke (about Batman): And he’s not my boss. Or the the target of my daddy issues.
Tumblr media
Jason: you’re the latest robin. You’re supposed to... whatever. Brighten his dark side. All that crap. So he doesn’t propose to a villain and then run off and do... This! Duke: Jay, what? Dude, when you were robin you got dead then came back as a vigilante villain! And you’re telling me to “brighten his dark side”. (Batman 33 (2016))
Tumblr media
Duke: Question. Didn’t you die already?
If that had been anyone else, I don't think Jason would have brushed it aside that easily! Anyways, Duke and Jason have a super interesting relationship and I hope more people keep exploring it!

Another Word For Surveillance - Part Four
R&D requested a last-minute all-hands meeting the week following the Stark Foundation gala, which you’ve been dodging with some minor success.
You worked from home starting Friday, claiming you had a cold. This week, you had a kitchen sink fiasco. Water everywhere! Must unclog asap!
You haven’t seen Bucky since leaving his apartment unit last week. He texted half an hour later, wanting to know where he should meet you. You had to rush out, you explained as the shuttle dropped you off at the nearest station.
Bucky: Ok
Over dinner back home, you stared at the reply, fighting the urge to apologize for leaving abruptly. You scrolled up to look at his recent messages.
Bucky: Working on it.
Bucky: Nowhere near the candy stockpile this wk. You know who was in the ofc? Wilson.
Bucky: Ok.
Bucky: Working on it. Like I told you two days ago. Stop asking. Please.
That confusing man punctuated his texts consistently and you were convinced the missing period in his response was some sort of retaliation, his way of telling you rushing out of their apartments like you stuffed your bag with illegally procured Oreos from their pantry was not cool.
Since that evening, you’ve corresponded with each other through short, boring, work emails. You didn’t ask him how the gala went. You didn’t have to. Pictures of the Avengers in formal wear circulated every text chain you were in. Your mother sent you one of the obligatory red carpet group photos. Claire forwarded a four-photo collage of Bucky, followed by a peace sign.
Bucky stared down the camera as if it were a sniper. Alert blue eyes. Not angry but openly curious. Maybe a little intimidated by the majesty of black tie and champagne affairs.
Breathtaking images of Bucky in a classic black suit, hair pulled back, standing next to his spectacularly dressed teammates.
You might have saved a couple of candid shots showing him smiling shyly as he chatted with guests.
Still, it would have been polite to ask him how his evening went. It’s not like you were going to ask if he brought a date. He didn’t appear to have one by the way. If anything it seemed like Steve, Sam, and Bucky went together, a trio of unbelievably handsome, broad-shouldered gentlemen.
You were tempted to ask why he still couldn’t tie his hair properly though. Six year-olds could do it better. If you were on speaking terms outside of work, you might have shown him how to get his hair under control.
But you currently limited discussions to his missions and you intended to lay low for a few more days. Anything that required face-to-face meetings was successfully pawned off to Claire or someone else in the team. You needed more time for introspection because the breathing space offered by your thinking bench at the facility wasn’t enough anymore.
Steve Fucking Rogers basically dropped kicked the door you thought you’d bolted shut months ago when you convinced yourself all you wanted was for Bucky to keep stealing a reasonable number of Snickers bars from your desk drawer on a weekly basis.
The pit in your stomach begged to disagree. With all due respect.
The encounter with the super soldiers at the Grid 5 apartments alerted you to recent deviations, changes that threatened your fragile status quo.
So yeah, you needed time to reassess your plan because for the first time in months, it felt like things were getting out of hand. Your thing for Bucky, it burrowed itself in your heart; that’s where it lived now, in the same neighborhood as love.
If it’s even love.
How were you going to know for sure? You thought you’d been in love before. You were so wrong, it's not even funny.
It scared you, but you learned to live with the reality of loving alone. That’s been the case for months until Claire dropped that fact-based comment about the increasing number of times Bucky’s been around the office to bring you food.
Facts, it’s tough to argue with them.
Then Steve piled on by asking about your Friday night plans, like it was important to him.
Maybe it didn’t mean anything apart from him being genuinely curious about what mere mortals got up to during their spare time, but - and this is the silly part that reeked of hope - your first thought was maybe it meant something.
Tumblr media
If you had known about the all-hands call in advance, you would have gotten Claire to sit in for you too.
The meeting included engineers developing a short range comms device that’s supposed to be harder to detect. Steve was leading a mission in South America with Bucky and Wanda Maximoff in a couple of days, and he would only agree to test the earpieces on the field if operations signed off on it too.
Due to your “sink situation” that week, you joined the meeting over the phone. You dialled in early but kept quiet, conscious of the fact that you were the only one who was not physically present. When Steve finally asked for your input, you suggested confirming first how fast the team can retreat to the Quinjet in case the device failed.
“We have to make that call soon, Y/N,” Steve reminded you.
You didn’t have access to satellite maps from your living room but a quick Google search gave you a rough idea of the terrain. “It looks like a 5 kilometer dash from the drop-off point. Max 5.5km?”
“Is it 5 or 5.5?” Bucky asked impatiently.
The route wasn’t a straight path. It wasn’t just a matter of tracing a line from point A to B. An uphill jog would slow them down too - not by much, you’ve seen Steve and Bucky take a bajillion laps around Grids 3 and 4 before. You don’t believe the distance would be an issue but you weren’t going to be bullied into providing unverified data on the spot.
“I will get you a better estimate, I just need access to the Sat maps.” You scribbled a reminder to prioritize the task after the call. “Can you give me until tomorrow morning please, Steve?”
It was petty of you to address the request to Steve when Bucky raised the matter.
There was a pause on the line. A chair squeaked. Tell-tale gears whirred. “End of day is better,” Steve finally replied.
Determined not to be thrown off by this unscheduled meeting, and the incessant tapping on the conference table, you took a deep breath and confirmed you will provide the information that afternoon.
There was another hush, followed by murmuring around the conference room.
Steve cleared his throat. “Sorry Y/N, can you get us - get me the details within a couple of hours or so?” He sighed. “Right, meant to say two hours. Is that workable?”
That meant you had to leave the house in the next few minutes. You weren’t planning on making an appearance in the office today but you didn’t want to delay planning.
“Ok.”
“What about the sink?” Bucky’s dry delivery came through the speaker.
“Sink guy fixed it this morning,” you replied.
“Great, see you in the office then.” There wasn’t even an attempt to sound sincere.
Not to be outdone, you crossed your arms and added, “Perfect, see you in the office!”
He snorted. Snorted!
“Ok! We’ll have the data as discussed; please tell me we’re all happy about that?” Steve asked with a hint of exasperation in his voice.
“Ab-so-lute-ly,” you quipped in a sing-songy voice that sounded too extra, even for you.
“Call me fucking thrilled!” Bucky retorted without missing a beat.
His response caused you to wince. He never yelled. Not during meetings; not even when the proposed plan involved scaling skyscrapers or pretending to be Sam’s doting manservant.
Certainly never at you.
You swallowed the spike of annoyance and put yourself on mute.
“Let the records show that I am also very pleased, thank you.” Even Wanda’s good-natured response failed to get a laugh from anyone.
During a lull in the call, you excused yourself, informing Steve you’re about to head to the office.
“Thanks. Looking forward to those numbers.”
You held back a snarky remark about arriving in the office at approximately 23.5 minutes.
Tumblr media
Claire got wind of Bucky’s outburst from one of the engineers. Your best friend cornered you as you arrived in the office that afternoon.
“Did a certain brooding super soldier finally kiss you or something?” She did a double-take when you bit your lip instead of rolling your eyes at her joke. “Oh ho ho ho!” She leaned against your desk. “My guy in engineering said you and Barnes were giving off some sort of pubescent school children type of energy.”
“I was not acting like a child.” You chomp the head off a gummy bear with your teeth. “And we are not dating.” Tearing candy apart seemed to satisfy the part of you that still simmered.
You worked on the figures you hastily promised to share within the hour and sent an email to Joey, the resident math genius in your team, so he can check the numbers you arrived at.
Joey replied instantly, “I’ll get this back to you in 10.”
You looked at Bucky’s old desk, and then out the window, and decided it’s a nice day for a 10-minute confession. “Come with me.”
Claire grabbed a pack of M&Ms before walking with you to the solitary bench right across the building.
It was a picturesque afternoon, the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and yet you collapsed on the bench with an exhausted groan.
“First of all, nothing happened.”
“That’s exactly what people say when something has happened.” Claire poured a handful of M&Ms onto your palm.
“We went to his room-“
“Oh my god!” A few pieces scattered on the bench when she shrieked.
“-because he asked for help to pick a suit. For the Stark Foundation event.”
“You’ve seen photos from Friday evening right? I mean, whoa gorgeous.” Claire whistled and pretended to fan herself. “Personally, I couldn’t take my eyes off Sam’s rich burgundy three-piece. I think it was velvet. Goodness me, let it be velvet.”
It was difficult not to giggle at your friend’s antics in spite of your helplessness.
“As I was saying. Nothing happened-”
“Obviously something’s happened, but go on.” Claire picked out the red pieces first with the enthusiasm of a friend receiving hot gossip.
“Steve was there.” You relayed the strained interaction between Bucky and his best friend, including Steve’s question about your Friday night itinerary.
Your friend listened quietly but when you reached the part where you told Steve you were busy the night of the event, Claire held a hand up. “Why would you ever lie to that man?” She groaned. “You’re my favorite person in this compound and that’s saying a lot because Natasha Romanoff lives down this road, but you are a disgrace to all warm-blooded men and women on this planet as well as on Asgard and all other realms.” She threw an M&M at you for emphasis.
The round green piece bounced off your forehead and fell on your lap. “Pretty sure Rogers was only trying to annoy Bucky. You know how those two are. I wasn’t going to play along.”
“You’re disappointed Bucky didn’t ask you.”
You were prepared to act shocked and indignant but you didn’t bring Claire outside to tell more lies. “I’m not - we’re not - he didn’t want to go with me.” Having to say that out loud depleted all the energy accumulated from munching on junk food since you got to the office.
Claire crossed her arms. “How would you know? You didn’t give him a chance to tell his pal to shut up so he can ask you properly. You ran out of there like your pants were on fire.”
You told yourself you were only following the plan - to go for the path of least resistance, sparing you and Bucky any further awkward encounters. Lately it seemed like all you’ve done was ensure every interaction sat on a bed of awkwardness.
“Remember when we went to the First Resort for his send off?” You relayed the events from that night, only pausing when you received Joey’s email confirming the numbers you showed him were accurate. You shoved your phone back in your pocket and finished telling Claire about getting into the Uber, right before asking Bucky to pretend you didn’t want to date him.
She didn’t speak right away. Claire offered you more chocolate instead. “You know, lust goes away after a cold shower, but feelings stick to you like a motherfucker.” Her eyes remained on the building across the street. “I don’t want to scare you but sometimes feelings, they just never go away.”
She spoke gently, even though her words stung with the force of the truth. “Acting like something isn’t the case or pretending something never happened doesn’t make things magically disappear.”
You stretched your legs out and slid lower in your seat. You were supposed to expect nothing. That’s how you stop yourself from getting hurt. You can’t get hurt if all you expected from Bucky was for him to replace the candy he claimed not to have “borrowed” from your desk.
Unless you hoped for something more.
You bit on your inner cheek accidentally, pain shooting up the side of your face. “Ahhh fuck.” This is why hope should be banned like concealed weapons. It’s a public safety issue, you thought as you massaged your cheek.
Claire sensed you were spiraling. “Oh and don’t think I haven’t noticed that when I say Barnes likes you, my comment is ignored but when Steve Rogers jokes about you and Bucky going to this thing together suddenly you have to go into witness protection or something.”
You’ve done well to keep that door shut for over a year. “It’s easier not to talk about it.”
“Let’s just say the easy way has led you to this bench with me today.” She leaned her head against your shoulder, a soothing gesture from your friend.
You looked up at the third floor window which used to be Bucky’s corner. “Hmm, but something about the hard way makes me want to…”
“Do not say run,” Claire replied with a warning voice.
Both of you sat quietly until your phone alarm beeped. You had thirty minutes left before your deadline to get the mission information to Steve.
“We should go.” Duty called. You had a bunch of numbers to deliver and maybe a point to prove too. “Do you have any idea where Steve is?”
Tumblr media
You should have called Steve first, but you didn’t, because he asked for these figures today and you were going to make him listen to you go through measurements and quote figures up to the second decimal point.
Claire’s guy from engineering pointed you to the hangar. You suspected he might have a thing for your friend, and you’re not going to have any opinions about that because people develop a special thing for their co-workers all the time.
“Thank him for me please!” You told her as you sprinted to the elevators, clutching a tablet with the report to your chest. If you move fast enough, you can get to the hangar with time left to stick it to those super soldiers.
Everyone called it the hangar, even if it’s really three massive structures built next to each other in Grid 4. You lost a few minutes walking around the first two, asking if anyone saw a blonde man wearing a size small shirt.
You slipped into the third warehouse, where you were greeted by the deafening whine of an engine.
“Captain Rogers?” You hollered at the parked Quinjet.
“It’s Steve, remember?” He waved from the corner door. “Look who made it! With plenty of time to spare.” His smile was friendly, almost apologetic, which confirmed your suspicions about the non-urgent nature of this request.
“337.5 seconds!” The noise drowned your voice and you barely heard him earlier, but Steve didn’t seem to have any trouble hearing you. “From the primary location to the drop off site, it’ll take you - specifically - 5 minutes and 37 seconds if you run at top speed!”
You handed him the tablet showing the terrain superimposed on a field map. The engine continued to rev up, the repetitive grating sound making you feel like your brain was turning to mush. “It’s a 5.4km uphill sprint back to the Quinjet!”
“So it’s not 5 and not 5.5.” Bucky appeared from behind the aircraft, giving you a split-second view of his bare torso as he walked over while putting a shirt on.
Showoff , you bitterly thought, blood rushing to your cheeks. You’d probably walk around the place without a shirt too if you had abs like that. But that’s not the point.
Bucky wiped his hands on a grease-stained rag and tucked it in the back pocket of faded black jeans. He took the tablet from Steve, giving it a confused look and you know it’s not because he’s never seen a tablet before. “Five to six minute run?”
Unable to hear clearly over the growling machinery in the background, you leaned closer.
“What accounts for the range?” He asked with a neutral expression, like all he cared for was mathematically integrity, but it’s hard to ignore the soft dent between rigid brows.
Your hands automatically went to your hips. “Steve clocked in at 16 meters per second at his last physical!” You reached out and tapped twice on the screen to switch the window for him. “Your peak was 14.95 meters per second!” You recited the figures from memory. “That takes us to six minutes!”
“Why are you shouting? And I had a bruised rib that day!”
“Provided you lay off the waffles morning of the mission, it will be a six-minute and 2.40 seconds run exactly!” You couldn’t help yourself.
He shook the hair off his face with a defensive huff, unwilling to acknowledge Steve was the  faster runner.
You noticed the cut on his lip and the faded bruise on his cheek. He wasn’t injured the night of the gala six days ago and judging by the bruise’s yellow-greenish hue and his body’s ability to recover quickly from damage, you’d wager Bucky came from a mission only two or three days ago.
“What happened to your face?” The question came off sounding like an insult, which was unintentional. You were competing with very noisy and clearly malfunctioning equipment somewhere in the hangar, when you could have been walking around in your living room barefoot, munching on a donut.
He turned away to hide his injuries. “Why do you care?”
Well fuck if you didn’t ask yourself the same thing on a daily basis. That’s the ridiculous thing about caring for someone. You got rejected, you’re overwhelmed by the burden of your emotions, and you seriously thought you couldn’t go on like this.
And yet you did. Carrying around a flame kept alive through sheer will or naivete or dumb luck.
Unwavering even when the man you supposedly cherished asked you impossible questions like “Why do you care?”
If you were concerned about someone managing to land a punch on Bucky’s face, that sentiment evaporated quickly. “Forget it!”
“Why are you still shouting?” Narrowed piercing eyes backed you into a corner.
“Because I can’t hear myself over whatever that is!” You gestured to an invisible noise monster.
His face relaxed as realization hit him. “That’s the tractor.” Bucky sprinted around the jet and the screeching sounds stopped abruptly. “Now you can stop yelling at me.” His voice came from the other side of the state-of-the-art aircraft.
“I’m not yelling at you!” You were absolutely yelling at him even after the noise died down. “I’m trying to talk over the noise! Not everyone has super hearing powers!”
“What? Can you repeat that?” The sarcasm was hard to miss.
“Can you repeat that?” You mimicked him.
Someone laughed next to you. You’d forgotten about Steve. He moved between you and the jet. It wasn’t clear if he was shielding his friend or if he wanted to de-escalate. “Thanks again. You think your boss will sign off after she sees this?” He returned your tablet, oil-streaked from Bucky’s fingers.
“I told her you should be fine. Unless they have air support.”
Steve tilted his head. You’ve seen that look before. It’s “please do this for me as a favor” and “I outrank you anyway” in one smooth grin. “Can you find out if we should be worried about air support?”
He didn’t know how you did it, but he knew you could find him the answers he wanted.
“When do you need-” You cut yourself off when the grin widened. “I’ll get to it.”
“Hey, thanks, really.” Steve shifted his stance. “Listen. The only reason we press is, you’re one of our best and I know-” He pursed his lips. “To be clear, I know nothing so let me start again.” He paused for effect, like a seasoned public speaker. He had your full attention now. “I don’t know everything, but I do know you’re important to the team and I know you don’t let things get in the way of what we do here.” He glanced behind you. “I appreciate that.” Steve turned to you with a searching look.
His trust meant a lot and you wanted to reciprocate with the appropriate heartfelt reply. It’s not everyday you hear that from Steve Rogers. You opened your mouth, prepared to give a lengthy thank you speech. “This is-“
“Steve.”
“Buck.” The blonde Avenger nodded to his favorite person to torture.
Not this again. “Gentlemen.” You took a step back, eyes trained on the speckled charcoal gray flooring between a pair of running shoes and unlaced boots. “I need an hour, Steve,” you spoke without making contact with any blue eyes within two feet of you.
“Of course,” the former captain replied.
With a nod, you spun on your heel and made a beeline for the exit.
“Sweets. Hey.”
Bucky. You stopped walking and squeezed your eyes shut.
“There’s a secure terminal back here.”
Your about-face turn left you slightly dizzy. You blinked at him stupidly. Bucky was devastatingly handsome in a suit; this was not up for debate, but Bucky in a tattered shirt, 10-year old denim jeans, sweaty forehead, mop of hair in dire need of deep conditioning, this Bucky made you want to fling yourself at his feet.
He pointed to the room with his thumb.
“I don’t want to keep you guys from um, tractor maintenance.”
Claire was right, you’re something of a runner. Olympic caliber, judging by your track record.
Bucky shook his head. He tossed a set of keys to Steve without warning and his friend caught them without flinching. “Mind taking her back to G1?”
Her? The tractor? Nope. You bit your tongue. You were not going to melt into a puddle because he referred to inanimate objects like they were people. Nope. Probably named her something cute. Like Louise. Nope.
Steve palmed the keys and nodded. He patted his friend on the back before walking around the Quinjet.
Five long strides brought him right before you. “Tony’s team isn’t coming in until tonight. Terminal’s all yours.” He scratched his head when the tractor sputtered for a few seconds before the engine roared to life again, the uneven mechanical hum interrupting him. After a few more seconds, Steve drove out of the hangar.
“Good news, we finally found the one thing that makes more noise than your arm.”
He flipped you off with his 7 million dollar prosthetic.
“Someone needs to take her to a mechanic.”
Bucky chuckled. “I’m working on Kit. She’s the color of a Kit Kat see. I know you’re thinking about it.”
You fought to keep a straight face. “A real mechanic.”
“Ow,” he clutched his heart with a goofy smile.
You smiled back in spite of yourself.
See how easy it was to fall back to old habits? You’re supposed to be upset by the situation you were in but ten seconds alone with Bucky and you were ready to spread your legs. Metaphorically speaking.
Or not.
Things would be so easy if you didn’t like him as much as you did.
“Come on.” He pointed to where the terminal was with his chin. “We’re always hanging out where you work.” He shoved his hands in his pockets. “We can’t bring food here. Technically.”
He was trying, you supposed. Making an effort to keep everything from falling apart. You knew how that felt like, you’ve only been doing the same thing for over a year now.
This was the part where you start walking away before something terrifically awkward happens again. “I’m not in tech or engineering; I have no reason to be here.” You moved the tablet to your left hand only to switch back a second later.
“Well, this is where I hang out.” Bucky shrugged with his left shoulder. It beeped along with his movements. “So why don’t you stick around for a change? Let me grab something from the pantry and you get started in there.”
He expected you to run too, you realized. Claire definitely thought that’s what you were most likely to do.
It was still the right thing to do if you wanted things to stay the same.
He crossed his arms and waited for you to make up an excuse to return to your own desk.
“Yeah. Ok.” You replied cautiously, like you never spent any one-on-one time with him before.
His brows shot up in surprise, but he looked pleased. He pointed to the corner room with an open hand, letting you walk in front of him.
Your devil may care response shocked you. Let’s make it weird, you decided; it’s not like doing the opposite did you any good. Were things between you and Bucky always meant to be just a little delicate, just a little too tricky?
The parts of your humanity responsible for self-preservation warned you against this. Don’t touch fire! Don’t stand so close to the edge! And for god’s sake, don’t let him ruin you!
You reached for the door handle and pushed, almost bumping into the door when it refused to open. “It’s stuck,” you said after trying again.
He reached around you, placing his arm over yours. “Gotta put some muscle on it.”
That made you scoff. “Gotta put some-- whoa!” You stumbled forward as the door finally budged.
The lights automatically turned on from your graceful entry. Faceplanting was guaranteed until he grabbed your arm to stop you from falling over a workbench in the middle of the small room.
“Easy there, Sweets.” Bucky’s chuckle tickled your ear.
You gasped when an electric pulse rushed through your arm. You spun to face him, hugging your right arm, heart pounding against your chest like it wanted to escape.
He studied you with alarmed eyes. “You ok? Did I hurt you when I-”
You took a deep breath and shook your head. “No - no, I’m fine.” You leaned against the wooden desk for support and put the tablet down. “Just um, surprised, you know, when the thing, it opened and I flew-” You stopped the rambling when he continued to look worried.
The lip biting and subtle metal whirring confirmed his state of mind.
“Jesus, Bucky, I know sometimes I freak out, and yeah maybe there’s some truth to that.” You gave him a sheepish smile, wondering if he’d make the connection to the last time you saw each other. You pushed with your arms to hop onto the table, bringing you closer to his eye level. You still have to look up but every inch you gained brought his summer sky eyes into sharper focus. “I am a lot more sturdy than advertised.”
If he only knew how resilient you’ve been, how you simply refused to quit. He’d probably be the one running away from you.
He continued to stay quiet, so you gently nudged his leg with your foot, your shoe grazing thin denim.
He was close and that would normally startle you, but the proximity also allowed you to understand Bucky wasn’t lost in his thoughts - he was watching.
He was waiting.
“Bucky,” you whispered.
“Sweets.” He spoke with a low, guttural voice.
“You have to stop calling me that,” you informed him before grabbing a fistful of his shirt and tugging him to you.
He dipped his head, resting his forehead on yours. His eyes never looked as wide, taking you in, preserving the moment in his memory. His nose brushed your skin and you wondered if you imagined the tingling sensation, like every inch he touched came alive.
Before you could dive into what that could possibly mean, Bucky kissed you. Gently but with full intent. His warm lips coaxed you to open up to him. His scent - aftershave, detergent, sweat on skin - flooded your head.
You continued to grip his shirt because you needed something to hold on to and your lips followed his instinctively, moving where he wanted you to go, parting exactly when he needed more access.
He whimpered when you kissed the cut on his lip and he deepened the kiss, determined to show you how tough he was.
Just when you thought your lungs were about to give out and you didn’t even care about that as long as he continued to steal your breath with his mouth, Bucky cupped your face with both hands, pulling away slowly, his ragged breath warming your face. The way he beamed at you, he could’ve lit up the entire state.
“What?” You murmured as if waking up from a dream. You couldn’t quite hold on to a single train of thought. Everything came back to Bucky and those delicious lips.
“Gummy bears, really?” He licked his lips and laughed, kissing you a few more times to double check the flavor. He traced his arms up and down your body, leaving a trail of static that tickled and left you arching your back.
You were delirious, giggling and returning his kisses with the same enthusiasm. You remembered the pack in your pocket and reached for it absent-mindedly. “Yeah, you want some?”
His hand followed yours, slipping into your back pocket, and it stayed there longer than necessary, his grin wicked as he copped a feel. “Yeah I want some,” Bucky told you as he tossed the candy aside and pulled you back to him for another kiss.
You should make him understand you weren’t just looking for someone to have drinks with after work. Not anymore. Not after this. He should know that before this goes any further.
But these thoughts dissolved when you ran your fingers through his hair and he hummed with pleasure. Bucky stood between your legs, leaning over you on the workbench and supporting your weight with his metal hand. You felt his heart racing but he touched you with a tender, attentive hand that made you think you’ve never been held like this before.
Like he longed to keep you in his arms, not because you needed his comfort and protection, but because you could redeem him and make him yours.

The Quackity Meta: a Tale of Two Absolutes
More than anything else, Quackity wants control, and to never, ever lose his own autonomy. And that is why he despises Technoblade.
But wait, how is Technoblade a threat to Quackity's autonomy? Techno is all for individual freedom! He wants to eradicate the government so that no one can be controlled!
There's the question though... How do people exercise control within the framework of a video game like m/inec/raft?
“a person exercising power or control in a cruel, unreasonable, or arbitrary way.”
Power on the Dream SMP cannot be translated one-to-one with real  life power. In real life, yes, a government had infinitely more power than an individual, for numerous reasons. But on the Dream SMP, the government's power is always directly tied to the power of the individuals who are willing to defend that power.
Technoblade is powerful. This is not debatable. How he uses this power, historically, has been a mix of generosity and self-interest*, although primarily the latter.
Generously, He gains resources and then distributes them to his allies during the Pogtopia Rebellion, gearing everyone up and giving them a fighting chance against Dream. However, in the aftermath of Tubbo's being appointed president, Techno turns on them, swiftly and mercilessly. The moment that it becomes clear** that Pogtopia's interests don't align with his own, he crushes them with the aim to prevent them from ever recovering.
( *I use self-interest as a neutral term here. Everyone on the SMP is selfish to some extent – it doesn't make them evil, and in fact has been treated as a positive at times, as well as a negative.
**I want to note that whether or not Technoblade knew of Pogtopia's goal of reinstating the government is unclear. It would seem that from Techno's POV that he didn't know, or assumed that it was a minority who wanted another government. But on the other hand, no one was actively lying to him about their intent, and people like Tommy and Quackity made their goals very clear.  Further doubt is cast on the idea that Techno had no idea when you take into account that he enchanted the Netherite armor in the vault with worthless enchants like Fire Res.
Ultimately, there's no way to know until it is confirmed by cc!Techno himself, and it doesn't pertain that much to this analysis, but I'm aware that it's a hotly debated topic so I wanted to address it.)
It can be argued that Techno's destruction of L'manberg, both the first and especially the second time, was necessary. It can also be argued that it was cruel and a disproportionate retribution against both culpable and innocent parties. Extant of these arguments however, how does it feature into control?
Well, we can’t talk about control without mentioning the most controlling force on the server and the other person on Quackity's hitlist, Dream.
Dream is a tyrant. I don't think anyone can really make an argument against that in good faith at this point. He ticks off every box, no matter how vague or esoteric. This makes the interactions that Quackity and Techno have with him very interesting.
Quackity despises Dream. He's one of the earliest adopters of the hating-Dream-train, to the point that some people have compared him to Cassandra, a priestess who was cursed with the vision of prophecies that would always be true, but never believed. And indeed, Quackity's apprehension of Dream comes in as early as Pogtopia, and grows at a steady pace after the fact.
But despite his rightfully calling out Dream's hypocrisies and his controlling tendencies, Quackity was largely ignored on this front, especially when the time came to exile Tommy and Quackity basically predicted the next arc – If they gave Dream this concession, they would never be able to get out from under his thumb. Flash forwards to the Green Festival, and the moment Tubbo hands over the discs, any illusion of nicety drops and Dream proceeds to destroy them, side by side with...
Technoblade has always had an amiable relationship with Dream. From their first proper interaction on the server being Dream giving Techno some hefty resources, to their snap team-up on Doomsday, they've had a smooth time, with some notable bumps.
Techno fought against Dream during the Pogtopia rebellion, but when it became clear that Dream was more invested in chaos than his other allies, Techno temporarily allied with him to summon the Withers and drive the nail deeper into Manberg’s coffin.
The only time Techno has really bothered to challenge Dream directly is when he came for Tommy in exile. Techno went to great lengths to protect Tommy, hiding him and distracting Dream.
He did give Dream the option to call in his favor and take Tommy, but there are arguments to be made that he did this more as a challenge – that Tommy is worth the favor. Again, we probably wont ever know.
The difference in their relationships with Dream is polarizing. It also reflects the difference in personality – Quackity is an aggressive, ambitious person, whereas Techno leans more towards passivity and caution. Quackity is looking for enemies to challenge, where Techno is avoiding them, people who actually stand a chance against him most of all.
Technoblade is an individual with extraordinary amounts of power. Others have pointed out that he is rarely challenged by other characters or the narrative, and regardless of the merits or flaws in that, it paints him as nearly untouchable. His being in the good graces of Dream only adds to this.
And like with Dream, the only way that people have been able to threaten Techno is when they work together. The Butcher Army, for all it's flaws, managed to capture Techno through numbers – with Tubbo and Fundy (barely) holding off Techno's blood rage while Quackity snuck off to take Carl hostage. And they would have gotten away with it too, if the other most powerful person on the server hadn't stepped in – both by pointing Techno to a totem of undying in the days before the attack, and by getting Punz to cause a distraction and directing Techno to the final control room, where he could escape with Carl.
So, if the most powerful person in the world can only be threatened by people working together, and the most common form of organization is by government, then what does it say about Technoblade, who wants the government destroyed?
People like Tubbo, Fundy and yes, Quackity, all benefit from organizing and working together. They all tend to be less armed, less ready to defend themselves, and completely unable to stand up to titans like Techno and Dream on their own. It's safety in numbers, but it's also control, and control is power.
Ranboo's insistence that Snowchester is a Government is interesting when viewed through this lens. Ranboo is another person who is insanely rich, and able to defend himself and his belongings consistently. Ranboo doesn't need other people to defend him – he's living with Techno and Phil not out of necessity for his survival, but out of need for connection with others.
This seems to be the main difference he finds with Snowchester, which has a more structured environment, geared to defend itself and it's people, if harm should come their way.
Which makes sense, considering it's founder, Tubbo, holds no earthly belongings, and Jack, another prominent member, has made a character trait out of losing his things every other day. The two of them have no conceivable way to defend themselves against people who are stronger than they are. But together, holding the keys to nuclear armaments, they can suddenly play on the field of gods.
The anarchist commune, despite having all members working together and being on good terms, aren't really an organization, they're individuals with common goals and interests. They don't need to live together to be strong, they're all already strong, they choose to be near each other because they want to.
Snowchester is not a government and has no ruler, but together, it's members hold power. They have sway in the world when they work as a collective, and most members have a vested interest in keeping themselves and each other defended because of this. Consequently, the “identity” of Snowchester becomes more prominent, resulting in the flag, the uniforms and the, well, identity.
(Now, the more perceptive among you might have noticed that I basically just compared Techno Phil and Ranboo to the ultra rich 1%, which. Um. Is a pretty serious comparison to make about in a block game rp?
And I wanna say that I don’t think this was necessarily intentional on the parts of either the CCs or the characters, and beyond that, it’s just one way of examining the text. This analysis is by no means the “Right” way to view the story, just a different one.
Regardless...)
Techno uses his considerable power to further his own goals, first and foremost. This is not inherently good or evil, it just is.
Contrast with New L'manberg's cabinet; Four people, pooling their limited power to further their shared goals. Not good or evil, just a way of exercising power.
But power is not static. Power is fluid and changing, moreso now on the SMP than ever before, and Quackity and Technoblade are fighting to define what Power means going forwards.
Techno is fighting for the status quo, knowingly or not. Individuals with power should lead the world, and those without should strive to emulate their betters. He destroys all forms of government, which strip away the rights of the individual in exchange for hierarchy and consolidated power within that hierarchy.
At it's best, this is a very freeing ideology, where nothing and no one can hold back the individual. The world is your oyster if you are willing to work for it.
But at it's worst? “Violence is the only universal language,” is the key phrase. Where does this ideology leave people who aren't strong? Where does it leave those who cannot fend for themselves? If Violence is the only universal language, then the weak have no means to speak.
Quackity is fighting to get a foothold for a contrary ideology – One that prioritizes words over violence and offers alternative methods of gaining and exercising control, such as through currency and conversation. Quackity has tried to varying degrees of success to implement this on the level of his own individual power, such as during the elections, but his attempts at employing this on a grand scale have all been short-lived.
At it's best, this ideology can uplift anyone, regardless of their strength. It encourages more communication, more commerce, and thrives under, you guessed it, strong government.
At it's worst however, it creates a brutally controlling environment. Where a few people gain absurd amounts of power through the complex machinations of a fiat currency, and are then able to use their sway and influence with governing forces to exercise power that they would never be able to hold on their own.
Again, neither of these ideologies are inherently good or evil. They both have flaws and benefits, and benefit no one more than perhaps Techno and Quackity respectively, while hindering the other.
Techno is benefited by anarchy because he holds incredible amounts of individual power. He is the strongest person on the server, he is rich beyond anyone's wildest dreams, and on a meta level, he's straight up good at the game. The current status quo puts him firmly at the top of the food chain, and this is most obvious on Doomsday, when he and the other two most powerful individuals (Dream and Philza) come together and crush the combined forces of New L'manberg. They are not meaningfully challenged in any way, whatsoever.
Meanwhile, Quackity is deeply hindered by the current status quo. He's not strong, he's poor, and he's vulnerable to anyone who wants to bully him with brute force. On a meta level, cc!Quackity just straight up does not play m/inecraf/t as much as some of the other people that on the server. (To be clear, I do not mention that as a criticism, just to contrast Techno. Neither of their levels of play are better or worse for content, they just add to the experience differently.)
On the other hand, in a government? Quackity “Law Student” HQ is suddenly on top. He's charismatic enough to debate with Wilbur “Can Talk His Way out of Anything” Soot during the elections, and come out of that arena smelling like roses. Back during the days of El Rapids, Quackity held his men back from conflict with Dream, and talked him into a corner of technical truths where Dream had to concede that he viewed El Rapids as an independent nation if he wanted to get involved with their conflicts.
And Techno, while he is brilliant and an English Major, suddenly loses a lot of his intimidation factor if he has to respect laws preventing brutal murder. Techno can certainly debate, but his go to conflict resolution is usually violence, and if you take that away, you take away the threat of challenging him. Because make no mistake, challenging Technoblade right now? Is suicide.
And this duality, this grey morality and clash of ideals, is why Quackity is my favorite character on the SMP. He isn't strong. The power he holds is tenuous and balanced on a knife's edge. It would make more sense for him to stay quiet, keep his head down, and if anything, try to change things from the shadows, where he'll be in the least danger.
But he isn't quiet. He doesn't just challenge authority, he challenges the authority; Dream, Wilbur, and of course, Technoblade.
And in all but one of those matches, he's come out with a concession from his enemy gripped between his teeth. He schooled Wilbur in the debates. He forced Dream to grant El Rapids Independence at a time when he hadn't done so for New L'manberg.
But he failed miserably when he challenged Technoblade. Quackity lost that fight in the final control room before it began. He lost the moment he formed the Butcher Army. He would have lost if he managed to kill Technoblade, and he lost still when he died.
He lost because he conceded that the only way to achieve his goal was through violence. He decided that the only way to establish himself and New L'manberg as powerful? Was to kill Technoblade. And he lost that fight and he always will. There was never a way that he walked out of that fight with the victory; Quackity lost the ideological battle long ago.
But not the war.
As of writing this, Quackity is in the process of introducing an economy to the Dream SMP, on Sam's initiative. There is no action I can think of that is wiser for him to take right now. Now, when Dream has been deposed and there's a vacuum in power; Now, when people are getting tired of endless violence and the loss it brings; Now, when people are looking for something new.
An economy is a direct challenge to Might Makes Right. Trading, supply and demand, politics. It offers a new way for people to obtain resources and a direct alternative to brute force; other methods to pay for slights and breaches of honor and etiquette. No more will pet wars be fought with iron swords and shields, but with money! A healthy sum of cash for the murder of Fungi!
If Quackity can get this system off the ground (and with Sam's help, he definitely can,) the stage would suddenly be tilted in the favor of not just Quackity, but the people who he has associated himself with most closely – Tommy, Fundy, even Schlatt. They're all business men, all scammers. This could be Quackity's world, and he's damn well intending for everyone to live in it.
We’ll have to see what Techno thinks of this - Quackity hasn’t made any moves to start another government, and an economy doesn’t inherently contradict anarchy. But it does hold a potential threat to Techno’s current power.
And as for Quackity? What will he do once he’s at the top? Will he finally become a true tyrant? Will he usher in a new age of equality and justice? Or will he eschew all of that in favor of personal riches. For once, the cards are in Quackity's favor, and we might get the chance to see what he does when he holds real power.

So, where do we go from here?
Camp Cretaceous Season 4 Prediction (LONG):
As much as I’ve argued that we need to stay on Isla Nublar the whole time, turning right back around after that final sendoff would be too much of a forced “Return to Status Quo” for a story that has propelled itself forward so much. The kids did it. They won. They got off the island. I feel like we've explored almost everything we needed to (what's left? The bamboo forests? The gardens?), and though we never saw Triceratops or Stygimolochs or got chased by Gallimimus, we can't just go back after everything's increased. The only Big Challenge remaining on the island is the volcano, and that's six months out.
But the story’s nowhere near done, because we have four major plot threads that need to be addressed before the show ends:
1. Most immediately, we have the dinosaur in the closet. Is it a baby Scorpios? Blue? A Monolophosaurus? A Dilophosaurus? A baby Ouranosaurus? A baby Baryonyx? Jeanie? We don’t know, but odds are that it’s going to throw a wrench into the kids’ plans to return home.
2. The state of Sammy's family and the ranch are still in flux; what will happen to them? Did they get all the money they needed from lawsuits? Does Mantah Corp have dirt on them? Are they going to try to interfere with Sammy because she Knows Too Much? They were set up as villains for a reason.
3. Darius and Kenji's strained relationship is a setup for future conflict.
4. We need to see Bumpy again. This isn't something that “needs” to come up, but the fact is that she's one of the main characters—bringing her back is essential to the story's quality, and we're not missing that thread. She either needs to get off the island, or we need to see that she lives afterwards.
Considering all of these things, I can rule out a lot of options: we're not getting chased right back by the Mosasaurus, and the creature in the ship isn't just going to wreck the engines and send them back. They're less than a hundred miles off of Costa Rica, so even if they're cruising at a cautious ten miles an hour, they should be able to see the shore within twenty-four hours, which means we're not going on an island-hopping adventure, either. You need dinosaurs, too, so nothing generic will happen.
Thus we can consider:
1: The kids are on the mainland of Costa Rica, and lost in the jungle or mountains. Just because they found their way back to mainland doesn't mean that they're going to find a port, and if their stowaway or the Mosasaurus causes problems, they can crash easily. If it's a Scorpios Rex baby, they'll have to hunt it and capture/kill it to finish their mission from this season. The problem with this option is that it just retreads the threat from the last season, which is boring; if it's a Monolophosaurus (or two), then it might not even impact things...so, I don't think the “kids in the jungle” plot is going to stick. I give this one a “D”.
2:  The kids run into a patrol vessel before landing. Isla Nublar is under quarantine. While they're on the boat, their rescuers/captors unleash the creature (which could be Scorpios!), and now there's a tight opening adventure on the boat. Thrilling, but not much of a big season if it's just a navy vessel...which leads me to:
3:  This is the only way I think we go back to Nublar, and that is if they meet up with a patrol boat, and then the creature in the hold (a small Scorpios???) rampages through the ship. They put it down, but the noise attracts the Mosasaurus, which wrecks the boat and puts them right back on Nublar—separated and with a bunch of adults alongside them. With a cast of much-more-plot-vulnerable adults to care about now (perhaps including Roxie, who joined the crew?), the stakes are higher and the kids are guides—maybe even separated at different points on the island. Not a big fan of this idea, though—again, it's retreading, and the number of excuses for “military-trained adults can't radio for help” is slim. So, I give it an “F”. But let's refine it a little further:
4: The kids get picked up by a patrol boat that is actually working for Mantah Corp—and they discover the dinosaur that has snuck aboard. Seeing an opportunity, Mantah Corp excitedly takes the kids to their secret base...on Isla Sorna. Though the dinosaurs on the island are mostly extinct and sick from disease, the abandoned island was perfect for a field laboratory. Specimens to study, buildings that already existed, a quarantine keeping prying eyes away...there's a whole organization here now. The kids escape from captivity (as they do) and find themselves wandering around a new island with new dangers: all around them are long-decayed skeletons of dinosaurs from the past, and hunting them are bizarre creations from Mantah Corp's labs. It's an island of ghosts now, and the kids need to escape...and perhaps, when they do, they find that they only have enough fuel to make it to one place: and it's the place they never thought they'd return to.
This plot covers pretty much every base—the stowaway, Mantah Corp, the relationships, and a chance to return to Bumpy—and gives them a proper, probable reason to go to Isla Sorna that isn't “Fate decided that it would be fun if they went to a different island”. I give this one “B-to-A” probability.
However...
There is one other major option:
Three. Year. Timeskip.
There are only two things holding me back from leaning into this: one is that it would deny us the sight of the kids reuniting with their families. We need that. We need some sort of triumphant return home. The other, simpler, more obvious problem is the monster in the hold; that kind of cliffhanger seems like it should come up. Obviously both of these problems can be solved via flashbacks, or a prologue, but...the need for new models and such would be an issue, because “budget” has always been a thing.
The other major problem, obviously, is the fact that the kids would need a reason to come back together. Maybe they all gather together for an anniversary and a dinosaur attacks them; maybe they're all being interviewed; but a far more interesting, compelling, and obvious motivation would be this:
Bumpy is alive and in danger.
Thus, all six kids (well...at least two would be adults now...) go running off to find and rescue Bumpy. They're bold and independent, rebellious and reckless: they each go to save their dinosaur friend, and they end up running into each other and ultimately facing Mantah Corp, who is one of the major power players in the prelude to Dominion.
This one has the ultimate story potential, in my opinon. You have Kenji and Darius meeting again with death glares because they left on poor terms. Ben has adjusted. Yaz and Sammy have had three years of yearning, notes, and problems (or maybe Sammy vanished...). And Brooklynn has had to forge a completely new life for herself, because she can't deal with internet fame anymore—everyone asking her about the island wherever she goes was just too much.
It directly sets the stage for Dominion, allowing glimpses of the world as it will be in the movie. Maybe the kids set more dinosaurs loose from Mantah Corp's (land-based in this one) laboratories as they free Bumpy. Maybe they become renegades and outlaws—forced to live in the wilds of California, Nevada, or Mexico. They're no longer looking for rescue, but for refuge. Maybe Claire has a sanctuary, a real one, that they have to get to. This would make it a full-scale adventure in a world filled with dinosaurs. Whatever they brought back with them is out there, too...and perhaps an old, scarred nemesis they never thought they would see again.
The biggest drawback to this is that the show hasn’t been running long enough for kids who started it to connect with the grown-up forms of the characters, but also...at the same time...it could work? I dunno, I give it “B” probability, A+ potential.
Other thoughts that could work in any of these:
Roxie is working for Mantah Corp. She's unemployed, combat ready, and bitter at InGen...also, she'd look great in a uniform.
Brand is involved in any mainland shenanigans.
Dodgson. Dodgson. Can we get Dodgson here?

Chapter 1: Resurrection Overture (I)
{E/N: The first section is recap, the rest is new. If you wish to skip the recap, scroll down to the &&& scene break.}
{cw: mention of miscarriage, religious homophobia}
Welcome to Nightmare Game I. A review of the story:
1. [First People's Hospital of X City]: Qi Leren, the protagonist, downloaded a computer game called the Nightmare Game on the Internet. After the first BE ending, his computer broke down. He took his laptop to repair it, but the bus he was riding was involved in a traffic accident. He and the injured passengers were taken to the First People's Hospital of X City by ambulance and he met Dr. Lu in the ambulance.
After waking up again, Qi Leren found himself in the empty People's Hospital and he had received his own task system, which asked him to survive in this hospital until dawn, and got an S/L skill card: [S/L Data] (binding skill card): the holder can set a save point at the position where his body is located. If he dies or suffers fatal injury within 10 seconds after saving, his body will automatically return to the position and state where the save point was set and will immediately trigger the second use. One save point can be used three times continuously and the cooldown time is 1 hour. Anyway, if you want to use it, you will die.
In order to survive, Qi Leren had to commit suicide frequently in this haunted hospital to save his life. He met Dr. Lu and Xue Yingying, who were also involved in this game, and learned that there was a murderer in this hospital who was killing any survivors like them. With such an unexpected factor, the task of surviving until dawn became more difficult. The three people also met another mysterious player, Su He. With his help, the four people and the murderer fought bravely and killed him and cracked the secrets of the hospital from more than 20 years ago, successfully avoiding the earthquake before daybreak and surviving until dawn.
2. [First Arrival at the Village of Dusk]: After the mission, the four people came to the players’ homebase in the main world of the Nightmare Game - the Village of Dusk. There were many ordinary people here who had the same experiences as Qi Leren. They received "survival days" by constantly going to other worlds or performing tasks in the main world, and they would die once the survival days were exhausted. In the Nightmare World, apart from a few human settlements where the status quo of peace has been maintained, other places were ruled by demons. Qi Leren was very surprised, because he found that the Nightmare World had the same story background as the Nightmare Game he had played before entering here, but no one else had played this game, so he had to keep the secret and think about whether the tasks done in the Nightmare Game could be triggered in this world. Su He, who had been very mysterious in the first mission, also confessed his identity. It turned out that he was a Game Master from the Village of Dawn who went to investigate a bug in the Novice Village. Not long after settling in the Village of Dusk, Qi Leren triggered the compulsory task "Witchcraft Sacrifice" from the dead because of a murder case on the road.
3. [Witchcraft Sacrifice]: Qi Leren had to perform the "Witchcraft Sacrifice" task, but during the task, male players were given women's appearances, because the background of the task was that a small village that sacrificed thirteen girls to a demon every three years in order to seek refuge from the Devil. These girls killed each other in the forest, and finally a winner became a witch who served the Devil. Qi Leren, who had become a girl, met an iceberg, Ning Zhou, and fell in love with her at first sight. He pursued his beloved goddess while struggling to perform his task. The goddess seemed to have a good impression of him. After a series of adventures where they shared life and death, they finally defeated the powerful enemy and completed the task. The NPC Isabel finally became the witch who served the Devil. The two players met on the steel bridge in the Village of Dusk, but unfortunately he found that his goddess was also a man, and the undying love shared between the two people in the task quickly died.
4. [Seed of Slaughter]: After his failed first love, Qi Leren suffered a great blow and unfortunately met a player who had been parasitized by a seed of slaughter while flying in an airship. This player went mad because of the seed of slaughter’s outbreak, killing innocent people on the airship, but Qi Leren was parasitized by the seed of slaughter after killing him in defense, and then was taken away by the Village of Dusk’s judicial Trials Court. In order to remove the seed of slaughter, he made a deal with the Trials Office and became an undercover member of the crazy society that worshipped the Devil of Slaughter. Chen Baiqi, a businesswoman whom Qi Leren had met in the Village of Dusk, invited him to visit a common friend's grave on the Undead Island. After every player died in the Nightmare World, a tombstone was automatically generated on the island. As a result, Qi Leren found a large number of his own tombstones on the Undead Island. He had thought that his S/L skill was simply activated in the instant before he died. He felt very scared and questioned if he had already died, or if he was just a copy with his memories. On the Undead Island, his friend Chen Baiqi told him the story of Ning Zhou. Only then did Qi Leren know that Ning Zhou was an exorcist of the Nightmare World’s Holy See, and homosexuality was forbidden in the Holy See. Therefore, Ning Zhou was very pained after learning that he was a male, and Qi Leren felt very guilty.
5. [Castle Cry]: Qi Leren and his good friend Dr. Lu activated a copy task called "Castle Cry". The background of this copy was that three couples came to the mountains in the suburbs to watch the stars in the middle of the night for the once-a-century meteor shower. There was a European-style old castle built on the mountain during the Republic of China, which was said to have been built by a German couple who came to China to do business, and was later abandoned after a fire. The local government had repeatedly tried to repair the old castle, but accidents had occurred. No one had set foot on the old castle. At midnight that night, the clear night sky suddenly covered with dark clouds, raining heavily, and the six people were trapped on the top of the mountain. The rain was getting heavier and one of them proposed to take shelter from the rain under the eaves of the castle...
After entering the castle, Qi Leren and others dug up the old castle’s story. It turned out that a noble lady with a family history of hereditary mental illness had married her sweetheart, but her sweetheart loved her maid Adeline. The noble lady poisoned Adeline because of jealousy and married her sweetheart as she wished. After marriage, they came to China to do business and built the old castle. Her husband did not want her to give birth to children who might also suffer from the hereditary mental illness, so Nina, the housemaid, was instructed to add mercury powder to her diet as a contraception. After learning the side effects of the mercury powder, Nina secretly reduced the dose. Finally, the wife became pregnant. After Nina heard that the child would be deformed, she was very afraid, worried that the wife’s mental illness would be triggered if she gave birth to the deformed fetus, and she accidentally caused her to fall down the stairs and miscarry. After the miscarriage, the wife’s mental condition deteriorated sharply and she was often paranoid, suspecting that everything was caused by the ghost of Adeline, the maid she had poisoned, and the relationship between husband and wife almost broke down. In order to save her love, she began to sacrifice to the Devil, and finally became demonized herself, killing everyone in the castle and setting fire to it.
During the mission, Qi Leren found the laptop computer with the Nightmare Game, but the computer had run out of battery. He put away the computer and prepared to bring it back to the Village of Dusk to find someone to make a transformer so he could connect the power supply and try to play the ending. During the mission Su He reappeared, saying that there were some abnormal reactions in this mission, and it was suspected that demon energy had polluted the task’s world, which led to the plot confusion and difficulty increase. This mainly manifested in the fact that the crazy lady sacrificed to the Devil and gained demonic power after her mental illness worsened. This mission should not have had such a plot. With the help of Su He, Qi Leren and Dr. Lu successfully solved the problem of the crazy lady and finished the task, then returned to the Village of Dusk, but the laptop mysteriously disappeared from Qi Leren’s item storage.
6. [Slaughter Secret Society]: After returning to the Village of Dusk, Qi Leren received a notice from the Trials Court asking him to disguise himself as the secret lover the former head of the Slaughter Secret Society (deceased), and seize the Slaughter Secret Society’s memento ring to gain the command of the Slaughter Secret Society, so that the Trials Court could catch all those crazy believers. Qi Leren approached the members of the Slaughter Secret Society as the coquettish gay "Red". During the mission, he was unfortunately attacked by Ning Zhou and both of them were shocked. During the undercover mission, Ning Zhou helped him get out of trouble several times. Both of them vaguely felt that they still liked each other. Although they were not women, they were still attracted to each other. After successfully seizing the Slaughter Secret Society’s memento ring and handing it over to the Court, Qi Leren had the seed of slaughter removed and triggered the main task "The Dream of the Holy Nun".
7. [The Dream of the Holy Nun]: The Dream of the Holy Nun was carried out in the main world, involving the past where the old Devil led the demons to invade the human world more than 20 years ago. At that time, the Holy City where the Vatican was located was unsustainable, and the Holy See evacuated urgently to Neverland. The Holy Nun Maria couldn't bear to see the people of the Holy City slaughtered by the Devil and created a powerful field, sheltering the whole Holy City in her territory. After the war, the old Devil was killed and the Holy City was left with serious destruction. After more than 20 years, the Holy City was still protected by the remnants of the Holy Nun and was shrouded in fog and inaccessible. Qi Leren got the Holy Nun Maria’s memento in the Village of Dusk, and he could enter the Holy City with it. At the same time, he also learned that Ning Zhou was the son of Maria and a player. In order to fulfill Maria's last wish—to liberate the closed and dying Holy City—Qi Leren, Ning Zhou, Dr. Lu, and Su He went to the Holy City together.
At this time, the Holy City is still peaceful, unlike the nightmare of the outside world. However, Qi Leren and his party had found an abnormality. No newborn had been born in the Holy City for more than 20 years and, from a certain year, every night of the new moon the citizens had to fall asleep before midnight and sleep until dawn, otherwise they would disappear. In order to explore the truth and fulfill Maria's last wish, the group of people began to investigate the cause of the abnormality. Finally, it was found that a surviving witch who had followed the old Devil King was accumulating strength to unlock the Holy Nun’s seal, which caused the sleeping people to change from human beings to demons because of the influence of demon energy on every lunar night, while the humans who remained awake became the targets of the demons, who hunted, brutally killed, and ate them. Qi Leren and others opened the seal on the site of the Vatican and acted separately.
When Qi Leren came to the cathedral where Holy Nun and old Devil had fought in the war, he found that his good friend, Su He, who had always been mysterious, gentle, and powerful, turned out to be a Devil. After the death of the old Devil, he gained part of the Devil’s power and had been secretly planning something. When he was in the Novice Village he had discovered Qi Leren's uniqueness, so he had been deliberately approaching him and using him, successfully following him into the Holy City protected by the Holy Nun’s power, and reached the old Devil as he wished. Su He let Qi Leren choose whether to degenerate into a demon or die. Qi Leren pretended to obey and died with Su He after saving, but failed because of the great disparity in strength and was finally killed by Su He, who was summoned by a messenger of the Devil of Power to leave the Holy City.
Because he had an item that would resurrect him in seven days, Qi Leren wrote a 7 on the ground in blood before he died, trying to tell Ning Zhou that he would be resurrected in seven days, but suddenly remembered that 7 means I love you in the Nightmare World. After Ning Zhou arrived, Su He had already left, leaving only Qi Leren’s body and a misunderstood confession. Ning Zhou realized that he was deeply in love with Qi Leren, regardless of gender, and that he loved this person's soul. So Ning Zhou returned to the Vatican in Neverland after the funeral, confessed his sin of falling in love with the same sex to the Pope, and left the Holy See.
So ends the first chapter.
&&& The story continues &&&
As the sun rises and the moon sets, the days and nights change. Seven days are fleeting.
The Garden of the Holy Tomb was wrapped in a gentle barrier.
Here, the sun was blazing, and it was also hit by an afternoon rainstorm. Countless monsters lingered outside the enchantment, showing malicious curiosity about the scent of a human inside the enchantment. But because they can't destroy the enchantment, they left disgruntled.
The breeze blew, tossing up the blue and white petals on the branches and they fell in great numbers to the ground, as well as to the hollow tree that had become a tomb. In just seven days, layer upon layer of petals had covered the man sleeping in the tree tomb, letting him be buried in this annihilated city together with the fallen flowers.
[Countdown to resurrection: 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds.]
[Easter Egg has taken effect, all skills and items are returned.]
[Player Qi Leren has completed The Dream of the Holy Nun. The task completion rate was 117%. Obtain special task clues, and reach the Purgatory deep in the Underground Ant City within 23 days for the next task to auto-trigger. If it becomes overdue, it will be regarded as giving up the task.]
[The reward is 90 survival days, and the unexpected factors interfering with the task progress have given an additional reward of 10 survival days.]
[Player Qi Leren has completed the achievement of "Deceiving the Devil of Fraud". The reward is the skill card "Secretly Observing".]
Qi Leren opened his eyes.
Stiffness, soreness, heaviness... Countless negative states superimposed on him, making him almost think he was paralyzed. The world consisted of mottled floating light and shadow, but the fresh scent of flowers and plants entered his nose.
The heart was beating again, the blood was flowing again, the lungs were filling again, and the Qi Leren was gasping for breath. The body that had been suspended in death for seven days seemed to have just been lifted out of an ice coffin. All of the organs in his body had almost forgotten how to operate, so they could only restart with difficulty as they let him change back from a dead person to a living person.
It took him a long time to remember everything, including his own name, but the next thing went smoothly. Qi Leren quickly recalled where he was and what he’d experienced—he was killed by the Devil of Fraud and the murderer had gotten the demon crystal of the old Devil before he left, but he’d concealed the fact that he would be resurrected in seven days.
Ning Zhou!
Qi Leren suddenly sat up from the tree tomb. He was dizzy because of insufficient blood pressure, and his spine made a scary "click" sound which made him almost think it was going to break. Fortunately, it held up strongly. Because of lack of oxygen in the brain, Qi Leren lay back again, staring at the blue sky and white clouds overhead.
The Dream of the Holy Nun task had been completed, that was to say, Maria's field had been solved. There was no doubt that the person who completed it was Ning Zhou, not Qi Leren who had won by lying down. Now that the task had been completed Ning Zhou had left the Holy City, but he had stayed in the Garden of the Holy Tomb because Ning Zhou had left his "corpse" here.
Thankfully, Ning Zhou didn't cremate him. Thank you customs of the Holy See!
Orthodox Vatican people usually put corpses in open coffins, covered them with cloth or other materials, and then buried them in the coffins after they decayed into bones. Because if a corpse was buried directly in the ground, the power of faith couldn’t dissipate, and the corpse often couldn’t rot for several years, so it needed to be placed in the open air to wait for the power of faith to collapse naturally. This process was also considered as the process of the soul ascending to heaven.
Although Qi Leren was not a member of the Holy See, Ning Zhou followed this custom and left him a whole corpse.
His body recovered some strength, and Qi Leren's thinking recovered from the initial delay to his usual state. He sat up and drank some water, and recalled his "death".
Death was like sleeping to the extreme. He had no longer been able to feel anything externally, but he had started "dreaming".
A looming dream that made him feel lost.
He had dreamed of Ning Zhou's mother, Maria.
She sat on a swing in the Garden of the Holy Tomb, which was on the big tree that was later broken by lightning while it was still verdant. At that time, Maria was not the famous Holy Nun. She was just a young girl, swinging on a swing in the warm afternoon, enjoying the beautiful time of youth and leisure.
Qi Leren walked towards her. Maria saw him and nodded to him with a smile. Her blue eyes seemed like the blue sky.
The sky... Qi Leren's consciousness was shocked by this deep blue. He suddenly flew, as if his soul had detached from his body, rising higher and higher, and the Garden of the Holy Tomb grew small beneath his feet. Together with the old site of the Holy See, it all became far away. The whole Holy City was brought before his eyes, and then the distant mountains and rivers... Countless demons were wandering, human beings were experiencing unprecedented suffering and struggling to survive, all of the cruelty of this world was shown to him.
He seemed to be a god overlooking the world, staring at the devastated land with compassionate eyes, but he could do nothing but grieve. This pain lashed his soul and great sadness tormented him. He desperately wanted to do something for the world, but found himself as weak as a worm.
"Look, when you stand at this height, you will find that you are even smaller and weaker than you think."
A gentle female voice came from behind, and Qi Leren "saw" Maria behind him. He understood why there was always a lingering pity and sadness in her eyes.
"But such fragile human beings have to fight against this world persistently, control their own destiny and the destiny of the world, and we never give up. Let the Devil go back to hell, let human beings dominate this human world, and let foreigners like you return to their own world—the martyrs who are gone worked hard for this, and one day, this dream will be realized."
"Ms. Maria, why did we come here from our own world?" Qi Leren asked.
Maria shook her head gently. "This is something that the will of the world decided. We suspect that it was only an accident at first. Later, it deliberately introduced more foreigners and wanted you to maintain this unbalanced world. Unfortunately, there are too many variables amongst you, and the fallen foreigners have aggravated this imbalance... It still has not given up... You have to be careful, you are already the object of observation."
The feeling of being secretly watched made him uneasy, and Qi Leren wanted to ask more questions, but he has already started to fall.
From the sky, dropping rapidly and falling to the earth!
This feeling of weightlessness was like being awakened every night by his nightmares, when he woke up in horror at the memories of his deaths, sweating profusely.
There was only Maria's gentle but regretful voice in his ear: "I can't tell you any more. Come to the church. I have something for you."
The dream of Maria had ended, and the Qi Leren who had come back from the dead recalled this strange dream. He understood that this was not an ordinary dream, but the residual power of Maria’s influence on him. It seemed that he must go to the church at the top of the former site of the Vatican again.
His body gradually recovered its strength and Qi Leren gawked at the Vatican uniform on himself, and the white roses that had already withered on him. Those thoughts about Ning Zhou that he didn’t dare to dwell on rushed back to his mind.
Love at first sight, feelings amidst danger, life and death before disaster... The beauty in these memories was deeply buried in shock when they had met again, but his death was the key to awaken everything, and the mistaken confession of that which should not be said was the straw that crushed everything.
He shouldn't have said anything, he should have died in silence.
If Qi Leren could go back in time and choose again, he would not write down the 7. He would rather swallow this overflowing love silently and would rather let Ning Zhou think he was really dead, so that he wouldn’t be forced to go down this blind alley that would only lead him to the fire-lake of hell.
He couldn't tell the person whom he loved, who maybe loved him, that he loved him.
Because this was an impermissible and sinful love.
He was not afraid to fall in love with Ning Zhou, but he was afraid that this love would bring pain to Ning Zhou. He was even afraid of himself, who was full of hope and longing in his heart—how could he expect a saint to admit his guilt over such a love?
This secret expectation was selfishness and even sin.
How was Ning Zhou now? And where was he? Would he return to the Holy See? Could he go back?
When love broke taboos, how could a devout believer face the reality that he had deviated from his faith? He was destined to give up one of them.
Qi Leren shook his hand and picked up the bunch of white roses on him.
The roses had already withered, and fragile yellow petals fell from the stems that had had their thorns shaved off, just seven.
That is Ning Zhou’s silent answer.
Qi Leren slowly showed a smile, but his eyes were wet-
On the ring finger of his left hand, there was a ring made up of grass stalks. It was so rough and humble, like a craft made by a child. If it fell to the ground, no one would look at it again.
It just so happened that it was placed on Qi Leren’s ring finger, a symbol of love, commitment, and eternity.
Therefore, its destiny was not to be a toy woven by a child, but to be the most faithful and brave answer given by a devout believer after he had tortured himself and subverted his faith.
A pair of lovers who shouldn't fall in love, at both ends of life and death, spoke their own words from the soul.
I love you.

Editor’s Notes:
Welcome back! A little bit of housekeeping to begin:
[Here] is the NovelUpdates page for part 2.
I made up a little [list of significant characters] who appear in part 1, including which skill cards they have, for anyone who would like a refresher. This is also linked at the top of part 2′s TOC page.
As was the case for most of part 1, I intend for chapter updates to be every second day. I will mention if this is ever subject to change.
Lastly, while this chapter does not have an author’s note, I wanted to include a note from part 2′s summary section since it gives some fun hints of what’s to come:
“PPPS: Inspiration comes from horror movies and games such as the Alien series, the Silent Hill series, the Resident Evil series, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, etc. There are also a number of documentaries used, specifically when it comes to time periods.”

[08:49 PM] Wack'd: Sue under Bryne has two types of character beats: "trauma" and "hair" [08:49 PM] maxwellelvis: Another year, another hairdo [08:49 PM] Umbramatic: sue's hair becomes its own entity [08:49 PM] Bocaj: Well this is almost like a character beat. [08:49 PM] Bocaj: Almost entirely but not quite unlike tea [08:50 PM] Wack'd: Trying to choose my least favorite thing here: the idea that Sue and Jen have lived together for over twenty issues and somehow never really talked, or Jan's joke about how feminism is against women thinking celebrities are hot
Tumblr media
[08:51 PM] Wack'd: (NOW is the National Organization for Women) [08:52 PM] Bocaj: Dun like. [08:52 PM] Umbramatic: ha ha ha, oh wow [08:53 PM] Wack'd: So anyway Jan, Jen, and Sue have a conversation about how Jan's hairdresser is mad famous [08:54 PM] Bocaj: In fairness Jan did once brag that she bumped I wanna say the First Lady from her reservation [08:54 PM] Wack'd: And then the Invincible Man shows up to wreak havoc [08:54 PM] Bocaj: Dammit [08:54 PM] Wack'd: If I had a nickel for every time someone decided to impersonate a Skrull impersonating Sue's dead dad, I'd have two nickels, etc etc etc [08:55 PM] Bocaj: Also rude to have someone called invincible man in a comic with an invisible girl woman [08:55 PM] Bocaj: The words are too similar [08:55 PM] Wack'd: I mean back in the 60s it was setting up a shock reveal of being Sue's dad so that mighta been intentional [08:55 PM] Bocaj: Dang [08:56 PM] maxwellelvis: If he's not even the original Invincible Man, this guy should consider renaming himself the "Last-Time-He-Was-Pretty-Vincible-After-All-But-This-Time-He's-Totally-Invincible Man" [08:56 PM] Wack'd: This is again a bold move coming from someone dressed as a key player in her dad's dramatic death
Tumblr media
[08:57 PM] maxwellelvis: Let's see if it pays off for him, Cotton [08:57 PM] Umbramatic: yeah rude [08:57 PM] Bocaj: That’s not a great costume [08:57 PM] Wack'd: Well it's gotta come out of mothballs occasionally or they lose the trademark I guess [08:58 PM] Wack'd: Anyway it turns out Doom is holding this guy's wife and kid hostage [08:58 PM] Bocaj: That sounds like something he’d do [08:58 PM] Wack'd: But is not that he mentions, like, blackmailing him into attacking the Four or anything, so this is a baffling course of action [08:59 PM] maxwellelvis: I am liking Sue's new 'do, at least. [08:59 PM] Wack'd: Probably not final, she was interrupted mid-styling [08:59 PM] Umbramatic: aw [09:00 PM] Wack'd: So it turns out in a cutaway this guy's wife and kid are not hostages [09:00 PM] Bocaj: Such twists and turns [09:01 PM] Wack'd: They've run off to their neighbor because their husband suffered some kind of psychotic break, built an Invincible Man costume and went off to menace the Fantastic Four [09:01 PM] Bocaj: Huuuuh [09:01 PM] Bocaj: I wonder how common this is in universe [09:01 PM] Wack'd: Oh! Shock twist--this is the guy Doom possessed shortly before he got blown up [09:02 PM] Bocaj: It’s like the powerpuffs next door neighbor but not played for laugh- oh [09:02 PM] Wack'd: So it's a trap, basically [09:02 PM] maxwellelvis: A multi-tiered twist. [09:02 PM] Umbramatic: oh BOY [09:02 PM] maxwellelvis: plans within plans [09:02 PM] Bocaj: This plot needs a flow chart and a sharpie labeled psyche [09:03 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Invincible leads the ladies into the Latverian embassy and helps guide them through security and also fighting robots [09:04 PM] Wack'd: Thankfully the ladies are smart and like "wait, why do you know all this, how did you even get into this mess to begin with" [09:04 PM] Bocaj: -record scratch- you may be wondering how I got into this mess. Well... [09:05 PM] Wack'd: Sue does not entirely put the pieces together but figures out Invincible Man is a bad guy [09:05 PM] Wack'd: Fights him to a standstill [09:06 PM] Wack'd: Aaaaaaaand then this happens
Tumblr media
[09:07 PM] maxwellelvis: Calamity! It's a comedy of errors! [09:08 PM] Wack'd: So basically Doom needed superheroes to bust into the Embassy so he could get to his computer console and override all his stuff so it's no longer security keyed to his old voice and whatnot [09:08 PM] Wack'd: Also Doom didn't just bodyjack a guy, he straight-up brainswapped. This lady's husband is dead. Sorry lady [09:08 PM] Phantom: wow [09:09 PM] maxwellelvis: Once again, Doom's nothing if not cautious. [09:09 PM] Phantom: the poor man and also woman [09:10 PM] Phantom: just dead [09:10 PM] Wack'd: Doom uses Sue's knocked-out signal flare to summon the rest of the Four, interrupting Johnny on a date with Alicia [09:10 PM] Wack'd: Which is where we cliffhang [09:10 PM] Wack'd: We hope you enjoyed this issue of ladies getting duped and making everything worse [09:10 PM] maxwellelvis: Hey, where'd She-Hulk and the Wasp disappear off to? Are they at the embassy? [09:11 PM] Wack'd: We will find out next issue maybe but tethercat principle dictates they're still knee-deep in shit-kicking robots [09:11 PM] Bocaj: I like to think that

I believe the lack of media about the festival is a result of the negligence of his team. His profile is low at the moment and as an independent artist the media interest in his career will decrease further. Many fans here (I'm not talking about you) believe that 1D's fame will last forever but it's not true, new talent is emerging in the industry and having a good team as well as label support and high profile are important. Louis has been invisible to the gp for almost 2 years.
And just to complement my ask about his team's negligence. I think the festival is a super cool idea but it won't attract exposure from outside the fandom. He needs exposure to a new demographic and I think the festival will just keep him inside the bubble. It would be great if the "fixer of problems" could get him a big festival to perform this year. Sorry for the long ask.
Anon, not at all! Sorry for the long answer!
A result of deliberate negligence—which is sabotage—and blacklisting, in my opinion. That blogger pal of Simon Jones would have fans believe they got the exclusive about the livestream numbers because no one else wanted it. Biggest livestream concert for a male solo artist and third overall in 2020 only behind Dua Lipa and BTS… Who can seriously believe that? Yet it received no attention except by the Independent.
The thing is, Billboard knew Louis again for an article about the album anniversary a month later. And many more knew him for the round of press about the hypothetical management company. So, seems like selective interest.
Louis has created opportunities for himself—the livestream, this festival—that should, under normal circumstances, work to precisely raise his profile and create media interest in his career. But no matter what he does, it makes no difference if his team doesn't push it, or the media is better served not reporting it.
And it seems calculated, because what never gets widespread attention is what concerns Louis as a solo artist, as a singer, especially if it’s anything that will positively set him apart.
What was it got him the most press in the last year and a half? The idea of a management company, which conveniently distracted right when the fanbase was united and focused on his music with Project Defenceless. And before that Father’s Day, wasn’t it?
And one can argue about a certain inertia from the media, used to reporting in that line. But then the point is that this will not change on its own, work is needed to change it. Instead, it continues to be reinforced. Like when you have an exclusive—on the Telegraph—to announce a livestream concert after months of silence, and it introduces him as a 'fringe member of 1D who spent more time analysing contracts than singing solos, known for chain-smoking and swearing,' and dedicates a paragraph to his living arrangements with his girlfriend, model Eleanor Calder, and explaining that his son lives in LA with the mother, stylist Briana Jungwirth... it matters. What could be harmless for some other artist is only contributing to maintaining the status quo and impeding growth for someone with his history and in his position.
Regarding the reach of the festival, it is, realistically, limited. It’s a small opening to another audience, though, with the involvement of two bands and the DJ. Nonetheless, it is worth noting what anyone will encounter right now if they check him out on social media. On Twitter he is 1/4th of a dead band—agreed that interest in 1D dwindles, as it is history and that bio is nothing at this point but an erasure of him as an individual artist with a solo career. You go to his You Tube and the last update was over a year ago. Why not upload a couple of performances from the livestream? The main issue with his IG is the long periods of nothing; after the livestream—which, despite the lack of press, one might have supposed a key moment that could attract people to his page—it went four months inactive. No one is asking for daily content, but how can such long stretches of total silence while his music is not played anywhere and he is pretty much invisible, be good? And it extends to within the fandom too. To see him only on his girlfriend’s IG for weeks on end?
In my ignorance, I would think this festival would serve as a good springboard for a single/EP release, with promo in the fall, building up to some performances in the November/December festivals? But even supposing he doesn’t have new music ready, the point stands that an artist’s career doesn’t exist only during single releases or big moments, and even favoring that pattern, what about building up to these and capitalizing on them?

Growing up in California in my grandmother's house, surrounded by tías, tíos, and all my cousins, I always felt a deep connection to my Mexican-American roots. Every generation of my father's family has had incredibly different experiences that reflect much about American history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My great-grandfather on my abuela's side, Daniel Martinez, grew up in Mexico and immigrated to Los Angeles. Eventually, he saved enough money to open a neighborhood market, which is where he met my great-grandmother, Guadalupe Miranda Martinez. She had come from Mexico to Los Angeles with her mother and brother as a young teenager. They soon married and began having children. When he lost his business in the 1920s, the family turned to migrant farm work. They were forced to use segregated water fountains and bathrooms and my darker-skinned tíos and tías were sent to Mexican schools, while those with light skin and blonde or red hair were allowed to attend schools with white students.
Tumblr media
Unhappy with the segregated schools, my great-grandfather joined up with other families to open the East Barrio School for Latinos in Claremont, CA — fighting the status quo is part of my heritage! They taught reading and writing in Spanish and learned Mexican history at a time when it was hard to show pride about being Mexican.
Tumblr media
My great-grandfather on my abuelo's side, Catalino Alba, came from Mexico during the Revolution. He met my great-grandmother when he immigrated to Gallup, NM, where he helped build the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a musician and inspired my abuelo José Alba to sing, practice traditional Mexican dance, and become an accomplished classical guitarist. As a child, there was never a family party where my abuelo didn't play guitar while my abuela, tíos and tías, and cousins sang along. Perhaps this is where I got my love for the performing arts!
Tumblr media
My great-grandfather moved to San Bernardino, CA, to work on the railroad and my abuelo José Alba grew up in the barrio where he and his siblings slept head to foot. With little food at home, he often asked the neighbors for fruit from their fruit trees. He was compelled to eat dirt, which he later learned was a natural response to the lack of iron that he needed in his diet. As a kid, he wasn't allowed to swim in a public pool without a certification of vaccination. He would often get glass stuck in his shoes because the soles were so thin and worn out — he couldn't afford anything else. At one point, glass punctured his foot, and as a result he developed lockjaw, which was nearly fatal.
When he could work, he made money selling oranges and picking potatoes. He says the first thing he did when he had money was to go down to Main Street to have his shoes shined by a young boy. He told that boy that he would come every week because he knew he was trying to make his own way too.
There were 12 kids in the family and my abuelo is proud that his mom figured out a way to send them to school as soon as it was possible. She understood the value of education. Even though it was hard for them, she made it a priority.
Tumblr media
This is my abuelo and abuela's wedding above — so classic. I always thought our ancestors were Spanish, but I learned through genetic testing that they were Native American, with roots that may go back as far as the Mayan civilization. We've been here from the beginning!
Tumblr media
My parents, Mark and Catherine Louisa Alba, were so different . . . but they had the same hairstyle! I know that when my dad was growing up it was difficult for him and his parents to be Mexican-American. The hyphen wasn't an option back then.
My abuelo had only learned English when he transferred to grammar school at around 6 years old, and he was way behind as a result. Like many others of their generation, my grandparents didn't teach their children, including my dad, to speak Spanish. My abuelo says that he didn't even think about it, but I wonder if he associated it with a difficult transition in his life.
I want my girls to embrace their Latino roots, know how much we have contributed to this country, and understand that the road ahead is richer when we acknowledge and embrace our heritage. I want them to learn Spanish like their great-grandparents. I'm incredibly proud of my diverse heritage and I want my daughters to feel the same way.
Jessica Alba is something of a triple threat: She's managed to achieve major success as an actress, fashion designer, and business mogul. It's hard to imagine anyone not wanting to work with Alba, but early in her career she had a hard time getting roles because of her race.
"They couldn't figure out my ethnicity," Alba said. "I would always go out for 'exotic.' They were like, 'You're not Latin enough to play a Latina, and you're not Caucasian enough to play the leading lady, so you're going to be the "exotic" one.' Whatever that was."
Of course, Alba eventually ended up starring in hits like Fantastic Four, Into the Blue, and Good Luck Chuck. So, yeah, it's safe to say she proved those people wrong.
And not only is this actress leading by example; she's also taking steps to change the game herself. The creation of Alba's cosmetics line, Honest Beauty, which she founded as part of her brand, The Honest Company, in 2015, stemmed from her own struggles as a young girl trying to find a foundation that matched her unique complexion. "I didn't feel like, when I was younger, that there were a lot of things offered to women of color," she said.
So Alba went out and made her own. "The philosophy around starting this beauty line is about enhancing who you are instead of cover up and turn you into somebody else," she said.
Jessica Alba’s startup The Honest Company is a veritable success — approaching over $350 million in sales during a year in which many companies struggled — but venture capitalists turned up their noses to the idea at first.
In 2009, Alba had a real issue: She couldn’t find baby products for her newborn that were guaranteed to be safe and eco-friendly. After having an allergic reaction to one of the allegedly baby-safe detergents she bought, she developed her idea the same way many successful entrepreneurs get started: She pitched building the solution she herself wished was on the market.
Alba pitched serial entrepreneur Brian Lee on her idea, who reportedly passed after saying it wasn't “very promising.” The feeling that others don’t see potential in you or your business idea is a familiar frustration for budding entrepreneurs. At the time, Alba remarked that she felt nobody took her seriously as an entrepreneur, or even believed in her idea, even though she knew there would be demand.
But just five years later, The Honest Company reached unicorn status, valued at over one billion dollars. What changed in those five years that let her take her failed pitch to becoming a success story?
To perfect your pitch, experiment
Fast forward to 2012. Alba is now in Washington, lobbying for an update to reform the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act. Buoyed by her growing knowledge on the subject, she went back to Lee and pitched him again.
This time, her deck was much more concise, down to less than 30 minutes from start to finish. In a world where most entrepreneurs give up after a rejection or two, Alba instead had spent the years between their two meetings pitching her idea to friends, getting holes poked in her positioning, and answering each and every supply chain question that arose.
Another change had happened over the last three years: Venture capitalists like Lee, whom she was pitching, had all started young families. Alba’s pitch was rock solid, and as an added bonus her prospective investors wanted the product themselves.
Lee said yes to the second pitch. The first year The Honest Company was in business, it reported an astonishing $12 million in revenue, a number that has only increased each year. After facing initial rejection on her pitch, Alba’s decision to persevere has led The Honest Company to dramatic success.
At first, everyone told Alba she should start with one product, then expand once that was successful. But this didn’t gel with Alba’s vision of a complete line of baby-safe products; the founder knew parents who wanted clean products wanted a brand that could provide multiple solutions.
Ultimately, Alba ignored the conventional advice and launched with 17 products, which many people believed was too many. But because she didn’t compromise on that, either to venture capitalists or herself, the launch was a total success.

Daenerys Targaryen in A Storm of Swords vs Game of Thrones - Episode 4.1: Two Swords
Tumblr media
In this series of posts, I intend to analyze precisely how the show writers downplayed or erased several key aspects of Daenerys Targaryen’s characterization, even when they had the books to help them write her as the compelling, intelligent, compassionate, frugal, open-minded and self-critical character that GRRM created.
I want to make it clear that these posts are not primarily meant to offer a better alternative to what the show writers gave us. I understand that they had many constraints (e.g. other storylines to handle, a limited amount of time to write the scripts, budget, actors who may have asked for a certain number of lines, etc) working against them. However, considering how disrespectful the show’s ending was to Daenerys Targaryen and how the book material that they left out makes it even more ludicrous to think that she will also become a villain in A Song of Ice and Fire, I believe that these reviews are more than warranted. They are meant to dissect everything about Dany’s characterization that was lost in translation, with a lot of book evidence to corroborate my statements.
Since these reviews will dissect scene by scene, I recommend taking a look at this post because I will use its sequence to order Dany’s scenes.
This post is relevant in case you want to know which chapters were adapted in which GoT episodes (however, I didn’t make the list myself, all the information comes from the GoT Wiki, so I can’t guarantee that it’s 100% reliable).
In general, I will call the Dany from the books “Dany” and the Dany from the TV series “show!Dany”.
Scene 1
Tumblr media
While seeing show!Dany with her dragons is always enjoyable on its own, I have some problems with this moment. The first is that we'll begin season four with show!Dany worrying about her dragons' behavior here and, later, end it with her locking two of her dragons away. These scenes don't focus as much on show!Dany herself as they focus on her relationship with her dragons, which I think is quite a problem in comparison to how ASOS and ADWD (which will be the book that the writers will adapt starting from episode 4.6) begin and end:
Dany begins ASOS hopeful and happy that she's finally going to Westeros. She ends the book disillusioned because her efforts to help the former slaves didn't pay off like she expected, so she calls off her dreams of home in order to stay and fulfill (what she thinks is) her moral duty as queen.
Dany begins ADWD distraught because she's still dealing with the nobility's backlash and retaliation against her authority even now that she has tried to be conciliatory and rule in peace. She ends the book a) disabused of the notion that peace is possible and b) directing her eyes to Westeros again.
As we can see, these two books begin and end displaying Dany's multiple dilemmas: home vs duty, other people vs herself, peace vs war, conciliation vs use of force and so on.
In the show, while her last scene in the season four finale at least highlights her compassion towards her people, I'd argue it still mainly focuses on her relationship with her dragons (which is only one of many issues that Dany deals with in the books) rather than on grappling with the questions above in a way that centers primarily on show!Dany herself, like the books do with Dany.
My second problem is that having show!Dany be concerned about her dragons' behavior that much earlier than in the books poses another problem:
In ADWD, Dany ultimately failed in protecting her human children during her tenure because she chose peace with the slavers and was, therefore, detached from her dragon children, from her Targaryen heritage and from her identity as the Mother of Dragons. By meeting Drogon again, getting in touch with who she was and choosing fire and blood (war), she will be able to protect her people again and be a better mhysa. Ultimately, mother of dragons and mhysa are complementary parts of who Dany is.
In the show, however, the dragons begin to seem troublesome before we get to Meereen, before show!Dany begins to rule and before the issue of peace vs war becomes a major dilemma for her. This happened for two reasons: a) D&D are bad writers who dismiss themes as only being necessary for eighth-grade book reports (here, I imagine they probably just wanted to add more shock value to show!Dany's plotline) and b)  D&D think that peace = good (even if it privileges a status quo that normalizes slavery) and war = bad, so killing slavers = bad, dragons = bad and continuing on with an anti-slavery revolution = bad (failure to understand reason 1 of why Dany's storyline matters).
My third problem is that, in the books, it's clear that what really upsets Dany is not that the dragons are eating goats, but rather that, as they grow and become more independent, the chances of her dragons a) hurting other people or b) running away increase:
“They have been wild while you were gone, Khaleesi,” Irri told her. “Viserion clawed splinters from the door, do you see? And Drogon made to escape when the slaver men came to see them. When I grabbed his tail to hold him back, he turned and bit me.” She showed Dany the marks of his teeth on her hand.
“Did any of them try to burn their way free?” That was the thing that frightened Dany the most.
“No, Khaleesi. Drogon breathed his fire, but in the empty air. The slaver men feared to come near him.”
She kissed Irri’s hand where Drogon had bitten it. “I’m sorry he hurt you. Dragons are not meant to be locked up in a small ship’s cabin.” (ASOS Daenerys II)
~
There was no sign of Viserion, but when she went to the parapet and scanned the horizon she saw pale wings in the far distance, sweeping above the river. He is hunting. They grow bolder every day. Yet it still made her anxious when they flew too far away. One day one of them may not return, she thought. (ASOS Daenerys VI)
~
Her dragons were growing wild of late. Rhaegal had snapped at Irri, and Viserion had set Reznak’s tokar ablaze the last time the seneschal had called. I have left them too much to themselves, but where am I to find the time for them? (ADWD Daenerys I)
~
If I look back, I am doomed, Dany told herself … but how could she not look back? I should have seen it coming. Was I so blind, or did I close my eyes willfully, so I would not have to see the price of power?
[...] At Astapor the slaver's eyes had melted. On the road to Yunkai, when Daario tossed the heads of Sallor the Bald and Prendahl na Ghezn at her feet, her children made a feast of them. Dragons had no fear of men. And a dragon large enough to gorge on sheep could take a child just as easily. (ADWD Daenerys II)
Before what happened to Hazzea, she was okay with the fact that they were hunting and devouring sheep:
Viserion sensed her disquiet. [...] “You should be hunting with your brothers. Have you and Drogon been fighting again?” (ADWD Daenerys I)
~
Her dragons had grown too large to be content with rats and cats and dogs. The more they eat, the larger they will grow, Ser Barristan had warned her, and the larger they grow, the more they’ll eat. Drogon especially ranged far afield and could easily devour a sheep a day. (ADWD Daenerys I)
Basically, this is my way of saying that, if they needed to have a scene where show!Dany is uneasy about what the dragons were doing, they should've shown them almost harming one of the people in her retinue or something along those lines (rather than being shocked at seeing them hunt and eat), for that would showcase her empathy like in the books.
My fourth problem with this scene is that we see part of it from show!Jorah's point of view:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JORAH: They’re dragons, Khaleesi. They can never be tamed. Not even by their mother.
In the show, he gets the first line of show!Dany's season four storyline, he gets to be anxious about the dragons before show!Dany is (which undermines how reflective she is in the books) and he is the one who warns her of their wildness when, in the books, she is aware of it without anyone having to tell her. It's another subtle way of undermining show!Dany's agency in comparison to her book counterpart, unfortunately.
My fifth and final problem is that, well, this scene was written by the same people who thought that it was necessary to have show!Dany's dragons taken from her in season two (which never happened in ACOK) and show her going "back to being a really frightened little girl" because she is "so defined" by them. It's the opposite in the books: the dragons only turned into weapons to fight against slavery because of her choices. So, with that in mind, I don't like how they made them so important in her first and last scenes of the season when they never were in the books. And all of this conflict feels superfluous in retrospect, when one remembers that show!Dany doesn't struggle to control them in the last three seasons at all.
*
DAENERYS: Ser Barristan.
BARRISTAN: Your Grace.
DAENERYS: Where’s Daario Naharis? Where’s Grey Worm?
BARRISTAN: Gambling, Your Grace.
DAENERYS: Gambling?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have problems with how show!Barristan and show!Dany are being portrayed here because it feels like the show writers switched their characterizations when we consider what we know of them in the books.
First, why is show!Barristan holding his laughter about this situation? In the books, Barristan clearly dislikes Daario and his influence on Dany:
On the day that he returned from his latest sortie, he had tossed the head of a Yunkish lord at her feet and kissed her in the hall for all the world to see, until Barristan Selmy pulled the two of them apart. Ser Grandfather had been so wroth that Dany feared blood might be shed. (ADWD Daenerys VII)
~
“This is your gift? A scrap of writing?” Daario snatched the parchment out of the Dornishman’s hands and unrolled it, squinting at the seals and signatures. “Very pretty, all the gold and ribbons, but I do not read your Westerosi scratchings.”
“Bring it to the queen,” Ser Barristan commanded. “Now.” (ADWD Daenerys VII)
~
“...Poor Daario, her brave captain … she will never forget him, no … but better for all of us if he is dead, yes? Better for Daenerys too.”
Better for Daenerys, and for Westeros. Daenerys Targaryen loved her captain, but that was the girl in her, not the queen. [...]
Her love for Daario is poison. A slower poison than the locusts, but in the end as deadly. (ADWD The Kingbreaker)
Now, Barristan is a product of his misogynistic society and I do think he's wrong for thinking (in the last quote above) that Dany's love for Daario is a sign of immaturity, but my point here is that he wouldn't be laughing about something that Daario was doing behind Dany's back; in fact, he would've most likely informed her as soon as he learned about it because he respects her authority.
Additionally, he's known for lacking a sense of humor and not being relaxed, which makes this scene even more OOC for him:
The old knight was a good man, but sometimes very literal. It was only a jape, ser, she thought, but she sat on one of the pillows just the same. (ADWD Daenerys II)
~
“She needs a spear,” Ser Barristan said, as Barsena vaulted over the beast’s second charge. “That is no way to fight a boar.” He sounded like someone’s fussy old grandsire, just as Daario was always saying. (ADWD Daenerys IX)
Second, why is show!Dany being portrayed as the uptight one here? In the chapter that they are drawing from, there are several moments displaying her carefree side:
“Five, were there? Well, that’s a confusion. I could not give you a number, my queen. This old Plumm was a lord, though, must have been a famous fellow in his day, the talk of all the land. The thing was, begging your royal pardon, he had himself a cock six foot long.”
The three bells in Dany’s braid tinkled when she laughed. “You mean inches, I think.”
“Feet,” Brown Ben said firmly. “If it was inches, who’d want to talk about it, now? Your Grace.”
Dany giggled like a little girl. (ASOS Daenerys V)
~
He tried to spare me the sight of the dead children too. He should not have done that, but he meant it kindly. And Daario Naharis made her laugh, which Ser Jorah never did. (ASOS Daenerys V)
Besides admiring Daario's sense of humor and swagger, Dany also appreciates that she can let go of the burdens of queenship (and luxury) and be more spontaneous and frugal when she's with him:
In Meereen I was a queen in silk, nibbling on stuffed dates and honeyed lamb, she remembered. What would my noble husband think if he could see me now? Hizdahr would be horrified, no doubt. But Daario ...
Daario would laugh, carve off a hunk of horsemeat with his arakh, and squat down to eat beside her. (ADWD Daenerys X)
Unfortunately, the show never allows any of those aspects of Dany's characterization to come across onscreen because the writers wanted show!Dany to appear very stoic, which we know because Emilia's said in an interview that they wanted her to "sit up straight and don't smile, you're not funny", which is quite a shame; not only the writers would've been more faithful to the books by allowing her to smile and laugh and enjoy herself, it would've made show!Dany more endearing.
Ultimately, I think the change in these characters comes down to a) D&D not really understanding any of the characters of the books and b) their sexist assumptions that men are funnier than women and that powerful women are all ice queens.

I also need to talk about how show!Dany's connection to the Dothraki, the Unsullied and the freedmen is being undermined onscreen in comparison to what we get solely from ASOS Daenerys V.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the show, the Dothraki only appear briefly in the background of this episode to never be seen again through the rest of season four and the entirety of season five.
In ASOS Daenerys V, we see how Dany's time with the Dothraki influenced her when she judges the slavers' reaction to her army or assesses the way that Oznak fights:
They are pissing on slaves, to show how little they fear us, she thought. They would never dare such a thing if it were a Dothraki khalasar outside their gates. (ASOS Daenerys V)
~
Oznak zo Pahl charged a third time, and now Dany could see plainly that he was riding past Belwas, the way a Westerosi knight might ride at an opponent in a tilt, rather than at him, like a Dothraki riding down a foe. (ASOS Daenerys V)
We also see her interacting with her khalasar and considering that her bloodriders a) are too important to send to fight against Oznak and b) aren't the most adequate men to send to Meereen's sewers:
Her bloodriders were in such a fever to go meet him that they almost came to blows. “Blood of my blood,” Dany told them, “your place is here by me. This man is a buzzing fly, no more. Ignore him, he will soon be gone.” Aggo, Jhogo, and Rakharo were brave warriors, but they were young, and too valuable to risk. They kept her khalasar together, and were her best scouts too. (ASOS Daenerys V)
~
“When cowards hide behind great walls, it is they who are defeated, Khaleesi,” Ko Jhogo said.
Her other bloodriders concurred. “Blood of my blood,” said Rakharo, “when cowards hide and burn the food and fodder, great khals must seek for braver foes. This is known.”
“It is known,” Jhiqui agreed, as she poured.
“Not to me.” (ASOS Daenerys V)
~
“These sewers do not sound promising.” Grey Worm would lead his Unsullied down the sewers if she commanded it, she knew; her bloodriders would do no less. But none of them was suited to the task. The Dothraki were horsemen, and the strength of the Unsullied was their discipline on the battlefield. Can I send men to die in the dark on such a slender hope? (ASOS Daenerys V)
So, despite not getting enough characterization to be set apart as their own individuals because of GRRM's racism, the Dothraki people's influence on Dany's decision-making is still clear. Unfortunately, this is completely absent from the show.
Tumblr media
On HBO, when show!Dany passes by the Unsullied, they are shown standing still in silent ranks for no reason while their commander show!Grey Worm is on a contest against show!Daario because the writers wanted it to happen, even though it doesn't gel with his characterization (more on that later).
In ASOS Daenerys V, when Dany passes by the Unsullied, a) they are shown separated in groups that are either training (along with Grey Worm) or bathing and b) we get information on their hygiene practices:
As they rode past the stakes and pits that surrounded the eunuch encampment, Dany could hear Grey Worm and his sergeants running one company through a series of drills with shield, shortsword, and heavy spear. Another company was bathing in the sea, clad only in white linen breechclouts. The eunuchs were very clean, she had noticed. Some of her sellswords smelled as if they had not washed or changed their clothes since her father lost the Iron Throne, but the Unsullied bathed each evening, even if they’d marched all day. When no water was available they cleansed themselves with sand, the Dothraki way. (ASOS Daenerys V)
It's lovely to see Dany returning the Unsullied's greeting, which is another example of how she (relatively speaking) sees lowborn people as equals to her:
The eunuchs knelt as she passed, raising clenched fists to their breasts. Dany returned the salute. (ASOS Daenerys V)
We also get to see the Unsullied cheer for Belwas after he won his duel:
The besiegers gave him a raucous welcome as soon as he reached the camp. Her Dothraki hooted and screamed, and the Unsullied sent up a great clangor by banging their spears against their shields. (ASOS Daenerys V)
We get to see Grey Worm openly objecting to Daario's suggestion that the Unsullied are immune to the boiling oil that the slavers would probably throw at them if they tried to storm the gates. While he and the Unsullied would still do this if Dany had given them the command, this is a subtle sign of his character development because it displays that, unlike with the slave masters, he's at least now able to speak out about the risks that he and his men would face:
“...We can storm the gates with axes, to be sure, but ...”
“Did you see them bronze heads above the gates?” asked Brown Ben Plumm. “Rows of harpy heads with open mouths? The Meereenese can squirt boiling oil out them mouths, and cook your axemen where they stand.”
Daario Naharis gave Grey Worm a smile. “Perhaps the Unsullied should wield the axes. Boiling oil feels like no more than a warm bath to you, I have heard.”
“This is false.” Grey Worm did not return the smile. “These ones do not feel burns as men do, yet such oil blinds and kills. The Unsullied do not fear to die, though. Give these ones rams, and we will batter down these gates or die in the attempt.” (ASOS Daenerys V)
And then, we see Dany deciding not to endanger the Unsullied's lives (similar to how she sought to prevent too many former slaves of Astapor from dying in the battle of Yunkai), which highlights both her compassion and her intelligence (since she shows knowledge of the Unsullied's particular strengths to conclude that they shouldn't be sent to the sewers):
Dany sighed. “I will not throw away Unsullied lives, Grey Worm. (ASOS Daenerys V)
Sadly, the show ignores all of this.
Tumblr media
On HBO, show!Dany walked past the freedmen on her way to meet show!Daario.
In ASOS Daenerys V, Dany chose to go meet the freedmen because she didn't want to spend time distracted by her feelings for Daario:
“Missandei,” she called, “have my silver saddled. Your own mount as well.”
The little scribe bowed. “As Your Grace commands. Shall I summon your bloodriders to guard you?”
“We’ll take Arstan. I do not mean to leave the camps.” She had no enemies among her children. (ASOS Daenerys V)
We learn that the fighting men were provided with weapons from the other two cities and were now being trained (though not at the particular moment that she chose to meet them):
South of the ordered realm of stakes, pits, drills, and bathing eunuchs lay the encampments of her freedmen, a far noisier and more chaotic place. Dany had armed the former slaves as best she could with weapons from Astapor and Yunkai, and Ser Jorah had organized the fighting men into four strong companies, yet she saw no one drilling here. (ASOS Daenerys V)
Besides the fighting men, we also get information on children and women:
They passed a driftwood fire where a hundred people had gathered to roast the carcass of a horse. She could smell the meat and hear the fat sizzling as the spit boys turned, but the sight only made her frown.
Children ran behind their horses, skipping and laughing. [...]
Dany had stopped to speak to a pregnant woman who wanted the Mother of Dragons to name her baby[.] (ASOS Daenerys V)
Then, there's also how the freedmen perceive and act around Dany:
Some of the freedmen greeted her as “Mother,” while others begged for boons or favors. Some prayed for strange gods to bless her, and some asked her to bless them instead. She smiled at them, turning right and left, touching their hands when they raised them, letting those who knelt reach up to touch her stirrup or her leg. Many of the freedmen believed there was good fortune in her touch. If it helps give them courage, let them touch me, she thought. There are hard trials yet ahead ... (ASOS Daenerys V)
Instead of believing that she has a "glorious destiny" (like the show writers put it), Dany's actual thoughts display that she only allows the freedmen to revere her because it helps them to feel safe; this is another sign of her empathy, not of her self-gratification or entitlement as many often think.
Finally, the chapter shows the freedmen killing a man for Dany:
Mero went sprawling, blood bubbling from his mouth as the waves washed over him. A moment later the freedmen washed over him too, knives and stones and angry fists rising and falling in a frenzy. (ASOS Daenerys V)
In the books, the former captain of the Second Sons, Mero, hid among the freedmen and bided his time to kill Dany out of revenge for having been deceived by her in Yunkai. Barristan defended her and defeated Mero with a stick, which then led to the freedmen ultimately killing him for their mhysa (and to Barristan's identity and Jorah's treason being revealed).
On HBO, because a) show!Barristan's identity was revealed right away and b) show!Mero was killed by show!Daario (who is part of the Second Sons onscreen rather than the Stormcrows onpage), this scene never happened, making this another example of Dany's connection with the freedmen being undermined from books to show.
If the writers really cared about "the people who may be suffering the repercussions of the decisions made by those heroic people" (which was their justification for leaving show!Dany out of the picture in the second half of the episode where they had her decide to kill thousands of innocents out of nowhere), they would've shown the (already limited) interactions between Dany and her khalasar, the Unsullied and the freedmen at the very least. In fact, if the writers really cared about them, they could've gone further and explored characters that GRRM himself didn't:
“Nine, the noble Reznak said. Who else?”
“Three freedmen, murdered in their homes,” the Shavepate said. “A moneylender, a cobbler, and the harpist Rylona Rhee. They cut her fingers off before they killed her.” The queen flinched. Rylona Rhee had played the harp as sweetly as the Maiden. When she had been a slave in Yunkai, she had played for every highborn family in the city. In Meereen she had become a leader amongst the Yunkish freedmen, their voice in Dany’s councils. (ADWD Daenerys II)
Rylona Rhee was a character whose existence we only learned about in ADWD, after she was already killed by the Harpy's Sons. As the quote shows, though, she represented the Yunkish freedmen's interests in Dany's court and had a lot of potential as a character that GRRM didn't tap into. The show could've easily improved this... Think about it: if Rylona was among the Yunkish freedmen, this means that she met Dany at the end of ASOS Daenerys IV (which, in the show, was episode 3.10). From that point until ADWD Daenerys II, the entirety of season four and the beginning of season five went by (this happened because the show writers reaaaallly stretched out the events of ASOS Daenerys V and VI and parts of ADWD Daenerys I and II). This span of time would've been the perfect opportunity to introduce Rylona's character, flesh her out and give us more information about the freedmen.
Now, the show writers would've never done something like this, of course; they only cared about the lowborn people's deaths and the shock value that would come with them, not about their motivations and lives in general.

DAENERYS: How long have they been at it?
MISSANDEI: Since midnight, Your Grace.
DAARIO: Ser Worm is stronger than he looks. But I can see his arms beginning to shake.
DAENERYS: What’s the prize to winning this stupid contest?
DAARIO: The honour of riding by your side on the road to Meereen.
DAENERYS: That honour goes to Ser Jorah and Ser Barristan, as neither of them kept me waiting this morning. You two will ride in the rear guard and protect the livestock. The last man holding his sword can find a new queen to fight for.
I already talked about my first issue with the scene, which is that it portrays show!Dany as rigid and strict while it ignores that her book counterpart is allowed to be playful and not take herself seriously in several moments in the books, including in this chapter (see above).
My second problem with it is that ... why would either show!Grey Worm or show!Daario think that this contest would give one of them "the honour of riding by [show!Dany's] side on the road to Meereen"? Did they forget that this choice is show!Dany's to make? Did they forget that she is their leader? By comparison, this is what Grey Worm says when Hizdahr tries to give him orders after Dany departs Meereen:
Hizdahr’s blunder with Grey Worm had cost him the Unsullied. When His Grace had tried to put them under the command of a cousin, as he had the Brazen Beasts, Grey Worm had informed the king that they were free men who took commands only from their mother. (ADWD The Queensguard)
Considering that Grey Worm only respects his queen's authority in the books, I doubt that he would've accepted to join this contest because he would know that its "prize" is worthless to begin with. Same goes for Daario. Unfortunately, this goes in line with how the (sexist) writers of this show have show!Dany's men make decisions among themselves and forget that show!Dany is their liege (another example: show!Barristan asking show!Jorah (rather than show!Dany) to take part in the battle of Yunkai), which is something that would've been fixed by simply paying more attention to the books. Unfortunately, this will only get worse as time goes on.

DAARIO: You like this girl? Must be frustrating.
GREY WORM: You are not a smart man, Daario Naharis.
DAARIO: I’d rather have no brains and two balls.
I'm fine with the show introducing a romantic relationship between show!Grey Worm and show!Missandei (which doesn't happen in the books because Missandei is 10-11), but it bothers me that the writers thought that the very first scene suggesting that show!Grey Worm has feelings for show!Missandei should feature show!Daario making an eunuch joke. Not that this would've been better if it weren't the first scene hinting at MissWorm, of course, it's needlessly offensive regardless and, while GRRM isn't immune to stuff like this either, it's true that this doesn't even happen in the books to begin with.
Scene 2
Tumblr media
DAENERYS: Have you ever been to Meereen?
MISSANDEI: Several times, Your Grace, with Master Kraznys.
DAENERYS: And?
MISSANDEI: They say a thousand slaves died building the Great Pyramid of Meereen.
DAENERYS: And now an army of former slaves is marching to her gates. You think the Great Masters are worried?
MISSANDEI: If they’re smart, Your Grace.
This detail about a thousand slaves having died while they built the Great Pyramid of Meereen is a show only invention.
Show!Missandei telling show!Dany that the Great Masters should be worried about the latter's army if they are smart is also a show only invention (which leaves a really bad taste in my mouth in retrospect, since this original bit of dialogue most likely stems from their impression that show!Dany is "becoming more and more viable as a threat" based on her campaign in Slaver's Bay, which will also inform why, six years later, they'll think that it's okay to say that show!Dany's actions in King's Landing were foreshadowed by her "willingness to go forth and conquer all [her] enemies"; failure to understand reasons 1 and 2 of why Dany's storyline matters).
It makes no sense that the writers felt the need to add original lines when we could've had what ASOS Daenerys V actually gave us:
When she looked over one shoulder, there it stood, the afternoon sun blazing off the bronze harpy atop the Great Pyramid. Inside Meereen the slavers would soon be reclining in their fringed tokars to feast on lamb and olives, unborn puppies, honeyed dormice and other such delicacies, whilst outside her children went hungry. A sudden wild anger filled her. I will bring you down, she swore. (ASOS Daenerys V)
As the quote above shows, Dany's discomfort with the Meereenese slavers' privileges and traditions stems from the fact that they only have these things to begin with because they've maintained and benefitted from the slave trade for centuries. That's why she no longer enjoys eating puppies:
“...We give each boy a puppy on the day that he is cut. At the end of the first year, he is required to strangle it. Any who cannot are killed, and fed to the surviving dogs.” (ASOS Daenerys II)
~
“Good dog in Astapor, little queen. Eat?” He offered it with a greasy grin.
“That is kind of you, Belwas, but no.” Dany had eaten dog in other places, at other times, but just now all she could think of was the Unsullied and their stupid puppies. (ASOS Daenerys II)
Or why she asked Jhogo not to use the whip inside Astapor:
He stopped before a thickset man who had the look of Lhazar about him and brought his whip up sharply, laying a line of blood across one copper cheek. The eunuch blinked, and stood there, bleeding. “Would you like another?” asked Kraznys.
“If it please your worship.” (ASOS Daenerys II)
~
“Make way for the Mother of Dragons!” But when he uncoiled the great silverhandled whip that Dany had given him, and made to crack it in the air, she leaned out and told him nay. “Not in this place, blood of my blood,” she said, in his own tongue. “These bricks have heard too much of the sound of whips.” (ASOS Daenerys II)
Or why she considered banning the tokar, though she ultimately kept it in an attempt to help to make peace with the slavers:
Walking in a tokar demanded small, mincing steps and exquisite balance, lest one tread upon those heavy trailing fringes. It was not a garment meant for any man who had to work. The tokar was a master’s garment, a sign of wealth and power.
Dany had wanted to ban the tokar when she took Meereen, but her advisors had convinced her otherwise. “The Mother of Dragons must don the tokar or be forever hated,” warned the Green Grace, Galazza Galare. “In the wools of Westeros or a gown of Myrish lace, Your Radiance shall forever remain a stranger amongst us, a grotesque outlander, a barbarian conqueror. Meereen’s queen must be a lady of Old Ghis.” Brown Ben Plumm, the captain of the Second Sons, had put it more succinctly. “Man wants to be the king o’ the rabbits, he best wear a pair o’ floppy ears.” (ADWD Daenerys I)
Or why she was intent on keeping the fighting pits closed:
“Ask her if she wishes to view our fighting pits,” Kraznys added. “Douquor’s Pit has a fine folly scheduled for the evening. A bear and three small boys. One boy will be rolled in honey, one in blood, and one in rotting fish, and she may wager on which the bear will eat first.” (ASOS Daenerys II)
~
“Why?” she demanded, when Ithoke had finished. “You are no longer slaves, doomed to die at a master’s whim. I freed you. Why should you wish to end your lives upon the scarlet sands?” (ADWD Daenerys II)
Or, finally, why she chose to replace the previous throne for an ebony bench:
Her audience chamber was on the level below, an echoing high-ceilinged room with walls of purple marble. It was a chilly place for all its grandeur. There had been a throne there, a fantastic thing of carved and gilded wood in the shape of a savage harpy. She had taken one long look and commanded it be broken up for firewood. “I will not sit in the harpy’s lap,” she told them. Instead she sat upon a simple ebony bench. It served, though she had heard the Meereenese muttering that it did not befit a queen. (ASOS Daenerys VI)
All of these examples highlight that Dany struggles to accept the Meereenese slavers' culture because of her desire to end slavery and achieve equality. The quote from ASOS Daenerys V above could've easily been added in the show during a conversation between show!Dany and show!Missandei like this one.
Now, one could argue that this couldn't have happened in this episode because show!Dany hadn't yet a) seen the one hundred and sixty-three dead children, b) arrived in Meereen, c) seen the Great Pyramid and/or d) faced the risk of her people starve during the siege, all of which increase her righteous anger and determination to move forward with her crusade and do justice. That's true, but it leads to another question: why didn't they let this episode begin with show!Dany in Meereen like how ASOS Daenerys V begins, that is, with her having to face Meereen's champion?
Meereen was as large as Astapor and Yunkai combined. Like her sister cities she was built of brick, but where Astapor had been red and Yunkai yellow, Meereen was made with bricks of many colors. Her walls were higher than Yunkai’s and in better repair, studded with bastions and anchored by great defensive towers at every angle. Behind them, huge against the sky, could be seen the top of the Great Pyramid, a monstrous thing eight hundred feet tall with a towering bronze harpy at its top.
“The harpy is a craven thing,” Daario Naharis said when he saw it. “She has a woman’s heart and a chicken’s legs. Small wonder her sons hide behind their walls.”
But the hero did not hide. He rode out the city gates, armored in scales of copper and jet and mounted upon a white charger whose striped pink-and-white barding matched the silk cloak flowing from the hero’s shoulders. The lance he bore was fourteen feet long, swirled in pink and white, and his hair was shaped and teased and lacquered into two great curling ram’s horns. Back and forth he rode beneath the walls of multicolored bricks, challenging the besiegers to send a champion forth to meet him in single combat. (ASOS Daenerys V)
That's a problem that I have with how they adapted ASOS Daenerys V. The chapter can be divided in a list of four parts, which goes like this:
How Dany deals with Meereen's champion (this happens in episode 4.3)
Discussions on how to take Meereen (this never happens in the show)
Dany's thoughts on/flashbacks with Daario and Jorah (this more or less happens in episode 4.1; some are show only inventions)
Dany a) meeting her children and Mero and b) finding out the truth about her knights (a never happens; b happens in episodes 3.1 for show!Barristan and 4.8 for show!Jorah)
Despite being a chapter jam-packed with action and drama, the show adaptation diluted its impact by 1) fragmenting it, 2) overfocusing on certain parts over others, 3) creating new (and often unnecessary) scenes and 4) displaying its events out of the intended sequence. Problems 1-3 were already present in the adaptation of Dany's first four ASOS chapters, but I'd argue problem 4 is more serious in ASOS Daenerys V.
In the case of this particular scene, again, because it takes place before show!Dany reaches Meereen (and because the show writers never understood reasons 1 and 2 of why Dany's storyline matters), we don't get to see how her problems with the Meereenese slavers' culture are tied to their practice of slavery. This, unfortunately, is another case of the show undermining Dany's characterization from page to screen.

DAENERYS: You were told to ride at the back of the train.
DAARIO: Yes, My Queen. But I need to speak to you about something important. A matter of strategy.
MISSANDEI: Your Grace.
DAENERYS: All right, what is this matter of strategy?
DAARIO: A dusk rose.
DAENERYS: Would you like to walk at the back of the train instead of riding?
DAARIO: And this one’s called lady’s lace.
DAENERYS: Would you like to walk without shoes?
DAARIO: You have to know a land to rule it. Its plants, its rivers, its roads, its people. Dusk rose tea eases fever. Everyone in Meereen knows that. Especially the slaves who have to make the tea. If you want them to follow you, you have to become a part of their world.
DAARIO: Strategy. Harpy’s Gold. No tea from this one. Beautiful but poisonous.
DAENERYS: You are a gambler, aren’t you?
DAARIO: Your Grace.
This exchange is adapted from this part of ASOS Daenerys V:
On the road from Yunkai, Daario had brought her a flower or a sprig of some plant every evening when he made his report ... to help her learn the land, he said. Waspwillow, dusky roses, wild mint, lady’s lace, daggerleaf, broom, prickly ben, harpy’s gold ... (ASOS Daenerys V)
I have some problems with it, though. The first is that they have show!Daario tell show!Dany that she has "to know a land to rule it". In the books, at this point in time, Dany does not have any intention to stay and rule Meereen because she thinks that abolishing slavery was enough on its own; she only changes her mind after seeing the aftermath of the sack of Meereen, hearing news of Astapor (where her council was deposed and slavery is being reinstalled by a former slave named Cleon) and Yunkai (which was rumored to be making alliances with sellswords to defeat her) and understanding that her anti-slavery measures can be easily undone if she leaves so soon. Additionally, I dislike that they chose to only adapt a (veeery brief) scene from the chapter where she's shown to lack knowledge. Why not also adapt, for example, the scene in which she chooses Belwas to fight for her against Meereen's champion and we get to see her whole line of reasoning for doing so? That they even added the detail (that isn't in the books) about how a ruler should have knowledge of the region (which show!Dany doesn't yet) only adds salt to the wound, since it subtly indicates that the show writers themselves find her ineffective as a ruler when she certainly isn't.
The second problem is that show!Dany's feelings for show!Daario are not that clear onscreen in comparison to what we get in the books:
Dany found herself stealing looks at the Tyroshi when her captains came to council, and sometimes at night she remembered the way his gold tooth glittered when he smiled. That, and his eyes. His bright blue eyes. He tried to spare me the sight of the dead children too. He should not have done that, but he meant it kindly. And Daario Naharis made her laugh, which Ser Jorah never did.
Dany tried to imagine what it would be like if she allowed Daario to kiss her, the way Jorah had kissed her on the ship. The thought was exciting and disturbing, both at once. It is too great a risk. The Tyroshi sellsword was not a good man, no one needed to tell her that. Under the smiles and the jests he was dangerous, even cruel. Sallor and Prendahl had woken one morning as his partners; that very night he’d given her their heads. Khal Drogo could be cruel as well, and there was never a man more dangerous. She had come to love him all the same. Could I love Daario? What would it mean, if I took him into my bed? Would that make him one of the heads of the dragon? Ser Jorah would be angry, she knew, but he was the one who’d said she had to take two husbands. Perhaps I should marry them both and be done with it. (ASOS Daenerys V)
As one can see, Dany's crush on Daario is significant for highlighting a) how Dany is a romantic person who associates sexual attraction with love and marriage (hence why she compares Daario with her first husband) and b) how her feelings for Daario are tied to her desire to find a home or, in this case, someone who she can rely on (hence why she remembers the prophecy of the three heads of the dragon when she thinks of him).
It was particularly important to display her crush onscreen because of what happens later in ADWD. Unlike what certain people think, Dany's dilemma between Daario and Hizdahr doesn't just represent the choices that she needs to make as a ruler (war or peace), it also illustrates the clash between her main motivations, home and duty: Daario is the former (what Dany wants for herself) and Hizdahr is the latter (what Dany thinks she must do for her people).
Unfortunately, this doesn't come across in the show. To be fair, at least we get to see show!Dany shyly smiling here, but this will be undermined later. In episode 4.7, show!Daario will say:
DAARIO: Never met a woman who didn’t like wildflowers.
In episode 5.7, this is how show!Dany will answer to show!Daario's marriage proposal:
DAENERYS: Even if I wanted to do such an inadvisable thing, I couldn’t.
Then, in episode 6.10, this is what she tells show!Tyrion after rejecting show!Daario:
DAENERYS: Do you know what frightens me? I said farewell to a man who loves me. A man I thought I cared for. And I felt nothing.
I wouldn't be surprised if the show writers made these changes because they a) are among the readers who think that Dany is unlikable/irresponsible when she expresses her romantic feelings for Daario in the books (whereas I happen to think that that makes her more relatable) and b) wanted her to appear more regal (based on their ideas of what that means, of course) in the show because she's older, but, regardless of why they did so, this is quite a problem: if show!Dany isn't in love with show!Daario, her conflict becomes much less pronounced in comparison to her book counterpart's (which, as we'll see later as the show progresses, it did).

Tumblr media
JORAH: There’s one on every mile marker between here and Meereen.
DAENERYS: How many miles are there between here and Meereen?
JORAH: One-hundred and sixty three, Your Grace.
BARRISTAN: I’ll tell our men to ride ahead and bury them. You don’t need to see this.
DAENERYS: You will do no such thing. I will see each and every one of their faces. Remove her collar before you bury her.
This is my favorite moment of the episode because it's a major example of how Dany's leadership style is defined by her desire to protect the ones who can't protect themselves (which applies to both book and show versions). Now that she wields power, she won't remain passive when she sees injustices occur, in fact, she'll want to confront them in order to remember why is it that she's fighting:
“I will see them,” she said. “I will see every one, and count them, and look upon their faces. And I will remember.”
By the time they came to Meereen sitting on the salt coast beside her river, the count stood at one hundred and sixty-three. I will have this city, Dany pledged to herself once more. (ASOS Daenerys VI)
Being a queen is not about self-gratification for Dany, it's about her responsibility and duty towards others, which is what this scene ultimately reinforces.
That being said, there are still some problems with the scene.
One, while the scene on its own does illustrate the kind of ruler (and person) that show!Dany is regardless of what the show writers were intending, I think that their primary intention was to provide shock value with the sight of the dead children (which is also the most likely reason as to why they succeeded in depicting how horrific the Unsullied's training was). If they had intended the scene to showcase show!Dany's selfless motivations like in the books, they wouldn't have later stated that her war in Slaver's Bay was defined by "that willingness to go forth and conquer all your enemies" or by how "she's not seeing the cost" (failure to understand reasons 1, 2 and 5 of why Dany's storyline matters). Unlike them, Dany knows that some wars are morally righteous because there are cases in which the status quo is not worthy of being uphold, especially not one that allows children to be murdered without their killers being punished (which also informs her views on Robert, his supporters and the Baratheon regime in general).
Two, the show leaves out the fact that, in the books, the Meereenese slavers burned their own city's lands in order to prepare for Dany's arrival:
The Great Masters of Meereen had withdrawn before Dany’s advance, harvesting all they could and burning what they could not harvest. Scorched fields and poisoned wells had greeted her at every hand. (ASOS Daenerys V)
This is important for two major reasons.
One, it raises the stakes of the conflict in the moment. If Dany continues to besiege the city for too long, her people will starve. If she gives up on conquering Meereen, on the other hand, not only slavery will remain, but her people will die of starvation on the way back to Westeros. If she wants to protect the freedmen that followed her, then, her only choice is to take Meereen.
Dany set great store by Ser Jorah’s counsel, but to leave Meereen untouched was more than she could stomach. She could not forget the children on their posts, the birds tearing at their entrails, their skinny arms pointing up the coast road. “Ser Jorah, you say we have no food left. If I march west, how can I feed my freedmen?”
“You can’t. I am sorry, Khaleesi. They must feed themselves or starve. Many and more will die along the march, yes. That will be hard, but there is no way to save them. We need to put this scorched earth well behind us.”
Dany had left a trail of corpses behind her when she crossed the red waste. It was a sight she never meant to see again. “No,” she said. “I will not march my people off to die.” My children. (ASOS Daenerys V)
~
When she looked over one shoulder, there it stood, the afternoon sun blazing off the bronze harpy atop the Great Pyramid. Inside Meereen the slavers would soon be reclining in their fringed tokars to feast on lamb and olives, unborn puppies, honeyed dormice and other such delicacies, whilst outside her children went hungry. A sudden wild anger filled her. I will bring you down, she swore. (ASOS Daenerys V)
Two, it raises the stakes of the conflict in ADWD. By scorching the fields, the slavers deprived Meereen of one of its main sources of income: olives. Now the city's economy is stagnant because it has neither olives nor slaves (because, as we know, Dany abolished slavery) to sell:
For centuries Meereen and her sister cities Yunkai and Astapor had been the linchpins of the slave trade, the place where Dothraki khals and the corsairs of the Basilisk Isles sold their captives and the rest of the world came to buy. Without slaves, Meereen had little to offer traders. Copper was plentiful in the Ghiscari hills, but the metal was not as valuable as it had been when bronze ruled the world. The cedars that had once grown tall along the coast grew no more, felled by the axes of the Old Empire or consumed by dragonfire when Ghis made war against Valyria. Once the trees had gone, the soil baked beneath the hot sun and blew away in thick red clouds. (ADWD Daenerys III)
~
“The sea provides all the salt that Qarth requires, but I would gladly take as many olives as you cared to sell me. Olive oil as well.”
“I have none to offer. The slavers burned the trees.” Olives had been grown along the shores of Slaver’s Bay for centuries; but the Meereenese had put their ancient groves to the torch as Dany’s host advanced on them, leaving her to cross a blackened wasteland. “We are replanting, but it takes seven years before an olive tree begins to bear, and thirty years before it can truly be called productive.” (ADWD Daenerys III)
However, because the show didn't bother to depict how the slavers destroyed their own city's fields, we don't get to see neither a) how it becomes harder for Dany to sustain a siege (and how conquering Meereen became her only choice if she wanted not only to free the slaves, but also to protect the freedmen that came with her) nor b) how, later, she struggles with reforming the city's economy (which is one of the many ways that the show adaptation undermined her political arc in ADWD).
*
For this review, there’s no comment of mine on any Inside the Episode because D&D’s Inside the Episode 4.1 doesn’t talk about show!Dany’s storyline. I’m not commenting on show!Dany’s clothes either because she’s wearing the same clothes from season three and I’ve talked about them before in past reviews.

Note
If it's any consolation, I'm sure that the Advisors and the rest of the MLA (Re-Destro, Trumpet, Geten) will show back up sooner than the final arc, just because we're going into Year 2 and the students would find great 1 on 1 or team opponents with the Advisors. Re-Destro and Geten are heavy hitters (and Geten could be tied to Dabi, Shoto and all that somehow) and they were locked up with Mr. Compress and Machia, but who do you want to see first from the Advisors?
Thanks, anon; I certainly do hope we'll get to see more of them.  Admittedly, my main concern is that I so liked what was going on with the Paranormal Liberation Front that even if we do see all of the MLA types again, if it's only in the context of speedbump battles for the students, that's still going to be a letdown.  Better than nothing, to be sure, but I really do want them to join back up with the League, even a League that's confused and out of sorts under All For One's hand.  I love RD's big spiritual-awakening-flavored crush on Shigaraki, the cross-organization tensions and relationships, just as much as I love the depth the MLA brings to the world outside of just what's going on with the heroes.
I'm fairly frustrated with how the MLA fared during and after the raid, largely because it's awfully hard not to conclude that, if what we have right now is all the erstwhile-MLA are ever going to come to, Shigaraki would have been significantly better off if he'd just killed them all and shacked up with Ujiko for four months.  And that would be such a waste!  The end of My Villain Academia was such an enormous triumph for Shigaraki! I want his victory to amount to something more than what we've seen, something that shows that both his strength and his mercy will pay off for him in the long-term, will be a concrete benefit to him rather than, with the benefit of hindsight, the reason everything went so wrong.
Particularly with Re-Destro, since Horikoshi saw fit to have Dark Shadow all but one-shot the man, and Edgeshot defeat him off-panel, it's really not going to mean much to me for him to have a big fight with students unconnected to anything else.  The drama's rather gone out of it at this point.  That's particularly the case since, if he's no longer connected to Shigaraki's plot, it's that much easier for him to just be off-paneled and forgotten about.  But, if Rikiya gets looped back in with the League, if his gratitude and admiration of Shigaraki mean he still has a role to play in Shigaraki's arc, that makes it much easier to get invested in any fights that role will lead him to. Ditto the MLA more broadly; it's categorically ridiculous to present that organization with the kinds of numbers, breadth of influence and legitimate grievances they have, only to try to sweep them back under the rug exactly like Shigaraki accuses heroes of doing with everyone they can't save.
To say the least, I'm pretty invested.  But I appreciate your consolations and am trying to hold out hope that we'll get some good stuff with them yet!
My anxieties aside, and to hit the other portion of your ask--who would I like to see first among the Advisors?--hit the jump:
(All nicknames and shorthand are taken from this post.)
Well, it'd be nice if they could all get at least as much to do as the Eight Bullets back during the Hassaikai arc, seeing as they got a similar splash page spread introducing all their faces.  There are considerably more than eight of them, of course, but even if they never get more attention than e.g. Galvanize or the hose-faced guy who iced Midnight did, at least then we'd have some idea of their power sets and at least one angle on their personality.
Assuming we aren’t going to get full breakdowns on every single one of them, there are still four things I'd really like to see happen with the MLA/the Advisors: the student fights we're expecting, the jailbreaks we're being told about, the reunion with the League I'm praying for, and for literally anyone in the in-world media to try and get their side of the story.
Student Fights: Seeing the guy who killed Midnight again is as sure a bet as any of these get.  Momo is an important enough character, with enough sustained arc, that she will have to get something else to do before the series is over.  Taking command of a group battle against real opponents--ones with more responsiveness and agency than Gigantomachia--would be in-line with what she's been moving towards so far.  I would, however, love it if that fight would be more challenging than a straightforward battle of tactics.
I headcanon Hose Face and Scarecrow as, respectively, an ex-con and a dude with physical disabilities--both people who have ample reason to want to change the series' status quo irt human rights abuses in prison and overly restrictive quirk use laws.  I'm not expecting the canon to validate me on what amount to wild guesses, of course, but I want those Advisors in particular to have motivations more nuanced than, "They're quirk supremacists; who cares why they're willing to put their lives on the line over this?"
A feel-good revenge match in which a bunch of teenagers lay the smack down on characters whose humanity the audience is asked neither to know nor care about would be lazy, and counterproductive to the series' current thematic concerns. Give Momo her victory, by all means, but don't give it to her easy.  A confrontation like this would be a good way for the less central Class A students to begin wrestling with the question of who, exactly, heroes "save" and what it is that people need to be saved from, exactly the way Deku and Uraraka and Shouto are now wrestling with these questions.
As far as other fights go, I'd also love to see Brand and The Question pop up again. They're probably the two I'm most curious about purely in terms of what their quirks are.  Why does The Question wear a mask, and what's he like that he wound up in Mr. Compress's chain of command?  And with Brand, what kind of quirk does he have that's powerful enough to land him a ranked position in the Guerilla Warfare Regiment but indirect enough that he fights with a sword?
Prison Breaks: I wouldn't expect this to be particularly involved, probably more of an aside than anything, but I want the Bindi Ladies to spring Hole Punch Face, thus getting us an angle on what's going on with that particular trio.  Aviator Teeth can come too because I want at least some hints about what his deal is.
I'd also love to watch Horikoshi even attempt to retroactively justify some of the logistics of the single-day capture and subsequent detention of 17,000 super-powered, combat-trained people.*  I mean, I don't think there are any feasible explanations for that, but I'd be curious to see what he'd come up with, especially if every possible answer just makes Hero Society look worse! We have only ever seen Tartarus as an example of the prison conditions in this country; I'd love to hear more, and an MLA-focused jailbreak would be a great way to show it.
PLF Reunion: Of course, my number one thing to see with a reunion is Re-Destro being just as dismayed as Spinner is over Tomura's possession.  I crave more serious attention being paid to Rikiya's profound awe over Shigaraki's freedom, and would love to see his reaction to Shigaraki apparently losing that freedom.
Aside from the obvious, though, if the PLF does start piecing itself back together, I expect to see Sanctum again, given the attention he's gotten so far, and the fact that he's now the highest-ranked member of the Tactics Regiment.  It'd be great to get some explanation for how he can possibly be "the longest-serving member of the Liberation Army," given that the Army was generations old already when Re-Destro was just a child.  (If we do get that information, I imagine my own explanation will be jossed hugely, so I would also be happy to take time with Sanctum that doesn't explain the discrepancy but also doesn't invalidate my headcanon.)
In the context of the regiments reforming, I'd also like to see Nimble and Aster, both because this manga needs more women, and because I'd like to see more of how Spinner and Toga interact with the people they were nominally commanding.
Media Attention: Trumpet's my number one hope here--the lack of any look into the state of the government in HeroAca Japan has been a total let-down since his introduction**, but I was particularly annoyed that the last time we saw him he was smiling (albeit in a fairly haggard way), giving me hope that we might next see him doing his part to portray all of this in a light that would sway public opinion.  And then literally one chapter later, we get prison guards talking about how the Hearts & Minds Party, a perfectly legitimized political party with representation on the national level, has been perfunctorily dissolved less than twelve hours from when the raid started.  How is there even an argument that the system heroes were upholding desperately needs to change?
I'm very tired of the media in BNHA only ever showing up to beg for/demand that heroes tell them what’s going on, particularly those damn press conferences. Journalists do investigative work! Newspapers employ reporters to actively seek out news!  Reporters in free countries don't just sit around waiting for the government or heads of major industries to graciously hand them press releases!  For heaven's sake, Trumpet was the head of a major political party.  People should be foaming at the mouth trying to get a statement from him!
Especially with public trust in heroes breaking down, there should absolutely be intrepid reporters out there looking to get to the bottom of any of the layered conspiracies the public's just been hit with and told to just write-off as a bump in the road on the return to normalcy.
Anyway, Trumpet's the obvious choice, but if I could be sure the manga would validate my headcanons about Nimble and Scarecrow's disabilities, I'd be happy to put them in this position, too.  Trucker Toad would be another good candidate, if there's any basis to my idea that he is or used to be a transport driver who's seen a lot of the country outside the areas e.g. the Top Ten Heroes are patrolling.  He's obviously a good candidate for getting back to that idea of anti-heteromorph bias, too.  But really, I'd take anyone who can give a cogent explanation of the MLA's position on self-determination and the various ways Hero Society has exacerbated quirk-based discrimination.
Anyway, that's about where my thoughts are on where I hope the MLA people are and what we might see of them.  Thanks for the ask!
--------------
*Or as many as 100,000 more than that, depending on how through the statement, "Their bases around the country were also attacked, and their supporters rounded up," was meant to be.  An influx of 116K people, incidentally, would triple Japan's current carceral population.
**Why! Why would you introduce a politician and then never even glance at your setting's political situation??

Venom: Let There Be Carnage – The Comics History of the Symbiote Rivalry
https://ift.tt/3APMTrk
Something that impresses me with a superhero movie like Venom is when it doesn’t rush directly into the expected villain. When there are four different Fantastic Four movies, and they’re all about emphasizing Dr. Doom, it’s a breath of fresh air when, say, Man of Steel only makes an Easter egg reference to Lex Luthor instead of going directly for that confrontation. The MCU Spider-Man has yet to meet an Osborn, guys like Thanos and Darkseid started out as ominous benefactors, and the existence of Heath Ledger Joker was merely a cliffhanger tease in Batman Begins.
Much like how the Justice League movie decided to take its time by giving us Steppenwolf of all people, the first Venom movie had Carlton Drake (who hasn’t appeared in the comics since the early 9’0s) and Riot (the most forgettable of all of Venom’s comic children). By letting Venom build himself up on his own, flanked by some rather mundane villains, it gave more meaning to Cletus Kasady showing up in the post-credits. Carnage, Venom’s main villain, gets more fanfare by appearing in the sequel where our hero is fully formed.
Since Carnage’s first appearance in 1992, the idea has always been to make a darker, scarier Venom. Venom was a villain at the time, sure, but he was also on the border of becoming more. Outside of his personal delusions and anger issues, he still claimed that he wanted to help the innocent and punish the guilty. Even when he was able to accept that Spider-Man was good, they couldn’t co-exist due to their different natures as vigilantes. Carnage was simpler because he was full-on evil and had no potential for redemption. He was something so sinister and malevolent that both Spider-Man and Venom knew it was worth it to put aside their differences and take this creep down.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage has hyped Carnage up as being out of Venom’s league and that was the initial push of the character. Over time, the two became roughly equals as Carnage became the go-to bad guy for Venom to punch.
So let’s take a look at the history of Venom vs. Carnage. For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to define “Venom” and “Carnage” as characters wearing their respective symbiotes (excluding Peter Parker), or the symbiotes themselves. I’m not going to count Eddie Brock as Toxin, or Flash Thompson as Agent Anti-Venom or whatever.
Carnage’s Debut
Not counting cameos and build-up, Carnage’s first major appearance was in Amazing Spider-Man #361, starting off a three-parter. Spider-Man came to realize that he wasn’t enough to stop Carnage and he was going to need help. Specifically, he was going to need Venom. This was an awkward decision as Venom was at the time living his best life on an empty island, thinking that he had succeeded in killing Spider-Man.
Once Venom fully understood the situation, he accepted the temporary alliance. In the very first Venom vs. Carnage confrontation, Venom and Spider-Man tackled Carnage, got slammed into each other, then thrown into opposite walls. Carnage then caused a distraction by putting a baby in danger so he could escape. While he was dominant in that very brief scuffle, he still needed to run off, so I’m calling this a draw.
The handicap match continued into the last issue of the arc at a rock concert. In one-on-one exchanges, Carnage had Venom’s number, but Spider-Man was always there for the save. Spider-Man was able to use the sonics from the amplifiers to take out both of them. Technically a draw again, but it’s also a situation where Carnage regularly kicked the shit out of Venom and Venom only survived because he had help.
Maxium Carnage
Insert your Green Jelly cassettes and press play because it’s time for Carnage’s big ’90s crossover story. After the previous story’s popularity, Marvel decided to add more heroes, more villains, and make the whole thing a whopping 14 issues!
As Venom was a San Francisco vigilante at the time, he flew to New York to stop Carnage’s reign of terror. The first fight wasn’t even shown, as after the reveal that Carnage had Shriek and Doppelganger on his side, it cut away. A brutalized Venom was later found passing out while knocking on Peter and MJ’s door.
As Maximum Carnage was filled with so much filler and extra characters, there were various fight scenes of a group of heroes brawling with a group of villains. Venom and Carnage talked smack a lot, but nothing much ever really happened in terms of fighting. The story finally kicked into gear when Venom used a stolen sonic gun and blasted Carnage while Firestar assisted with her microwave blasts. This would have done the job, but Spider-Man got in the way and Shriek simply cut Cletus’ face open, causing his symbiote to respawn and bring him back to 100 percent health. Carnage and Shriek overwhelmed Venom and carried him off, along with the sonic gun.
Venom spent several issues being tortured until coming up with the plan to sneak some of the symbiote into the sonic gun so that Carnage would splatter Venom with more Venom. He punched Carnage down and escaped with gusto, hiding the fact that he was in no condition to fight.
It isn’t until the last issue that we FINALLY got a real Venom vs. Carnage fight. Venom was physically busted a bit, but Carnage was mentally busted. The heroes hit him with some MaGuffin device that caused him to be haunted by those who screwed him up in life. Venom pretty much just kicked Carnage’s ass around the city while Carnage tried in vain to escape. Every now and then, Spider-Man would appear and go, “B-b-but Eddie! Killing is wrong!” for the sake of giving Carnage a second wind.
Eventually, Venom punched Carnage so hard that Carnage’s brain ghosts went away. Knowing Carnage was more of a threat this way, Venom tackled him into a transformer. After the explosion, Cletus was knocked out and Venom got to weakly sneak away. Hey, good for him!
Venom: Carnage Unleashed
Venom was so popular that we got Carnage. Carnage’s initial storyline was so popular that we got Maximum Carnage. Maximum Carnage was so popular that we got a Maximum Carnage video game. Then we got Venom: Carnage Unleashed, a comic based on the popularity of the Maximum Carnage video game. It…wasn’t all too popular.
Still, it did give us the rarely used plot device that symbiotes can travel through phone lines and the internet! Symbiotes really are like pre-Crisis Superman where you can give them whatever power and people will just go with it no matter how ridiculous. As Carnage escaped from Ravencroft and commandeered a security tank, Venom eventually caught up with him and they had a fight on a runaway vehicle through traffic. Carnage eventually won when Venom got slammed by an oncoming train.
Their final battle here is a big pile of “That’s not how any of this works!” The two characters send symbiote tendrils into the internet, which were rendered on the Times Square big screen as the two brawled in cyberspace. Venom destroyed a nearby heatsink, which blasted both and knocked them out of the internet.
Carnage was ready for another go, but his kidnapped psychiatrist set him on fire and caused him to fall out a window. Venom reached through the phone lines and out the window to catch the falling Cletus because dying is WHAT HE WANTS. Which… no, that’s not true at all. Hell, even in Maximum Carnage, Cletus was freaked out about the possibility of dying.
Venom: On Trial
So there was a big Spider-Man/Scarlet Spider/Venom team-up called Planet of the Symbiotes that culminated in a 40-foot-tall Carnage, but there was never a specific Venom vs. Carnage moment, so I won’t go into it. Venom’s ’90s antihero run did have a storyline where Eddie was arrested and put on trial for all of his many crimes. Cletus Kasady was brought in as a star witness, which was an invitation for him to freak out and go on a killing rampage. I mean, seriously, guys. Come on. You should know better.
This story went all-in on Venom wrecking Carnage. Again, Spider-Man would interrupt and give Carnage a chance to turn things around. This time though, Venom decided to ride the wave by sneaking away while Spider-Man and Daredevil took on Carnage. Realizing that the two didn’t have a chance, Venom picked up a couple syringes filled with dopamine blocker and sprung into action. He smacked Carnage around, injected the blocker into his neck, and watched as the symbiote retracted into Cletus’ body.
Venom Triumphant
Howard Mackie wrote Spider-Man comics for a long while and he had an annoying tendency when it came to storytelling. He would come up with an interesting, if nonsensical, idea that would shake up the status quo, but instead of following up on that and using it to tell an actual story, he would just forget about it and move to the next idea that popped into his head. He was one of the main reasons why the Spider-Man Clone Saga was such a mess.
In the 10th issue of Peter Parker, Spider-Man, Venom broke into the prison where Carnage was being held. Despite the legion of heavily armed guards with flamethrowers and sonic guns, Venom killed them all so quickly that the artist didn’t even show it. Cletus, for some reason, figured Venom was trying to break him out of prison, but instead Venom was there to absorb the Carnage symbiote. Carnage barely put up a fight. Pieces of the symbiote were on him, but he didn’t fully transform or try to defend himself. Venom simply pulled the symbiote off of him and ate it, becoming stronger.
After this issue, there was barely any follow-up to this.
Venom vs. Carnage
This miniseries came out at a really weird time for those involved. Carnage was just a couple months away from being torn in half by the Sentry and being written out of comics for years. Venom was appearing in Marvel Knights Spider-Man where Eddie Brock got rid of the symbiote and it bounced around to different hosts until landing on Mac Gargan. Meanwhile there was a Venom ongoing that was more about a symbiote clone where Eddie Brock only appeared for a couple late issues.
In other words, in the Venom vs. Carnage miniseries by Peter Milligan and Clayton Crain, even the creative team had no idea who Venom’s host was supposed to be. Luckily, the story wasn’t about Venom or Carnage, but a new character who would quickly fall into obscurity anyway.
Venom and Carnage swung around New York City, giving the exposition. The Carnage symbiote was pregnant and Venom was explaining that there was nothing to do to stop the creature from going into labor. Venom was all about protecting the new spawn while Carnage wanted to destroy it, immediately. Carnage got the better of Venom by flinging him into the distance. Regardless, the explosive birth wore out Carnage so much that he could only plant the baby onto a nearby cop and escape to rest up.
When the two had a rematch, Venom was there to save the baby symbiote (Toxin) and its host (Pat Mulligan). As if getting revenge for that Carnage Unleashed story, Venom brought the fight to the subway and pushed Carnage into an oncoming train.
And… that’s really all the Venom vs. Carnage we get in Venom vs. Carnage! Once Venom sees that Toxin is a good guy and capable of kicking Carnage’s ass, he gets afraid of Toxin befriending Spider-Man and decides to team up with Carnage for once.
Carnage, USA
Carnage returned from his maiming at the hands of the Sentry, albeit without a bottom half. By then, a lot had happened with Venom. The symbiote was removed from Mac Gargan and joined with war hero Flash Thompson. Agent Venom went on to join the Secret Avengers.
Carnage, USA told the story of Cletus expanding his symbiote to overtake an entire town in the middle of nowhere. When various heroes went to oppose him, the Carnage symbiote ended up taking over Captain America, Wolverine, Hawkeye, and the Thing. When gaining a moment of clarity, Cap called in Agent Venom for help.

Comics
Venom: Who is Carnage?
By Gavin Jasper
In their first meeting, Agent Venom easily took down Carnage with some explosive projectiles that came with sonic shrapnel. Then when getting ready for the kill – say it with me everyone – Spider-Man got in his face and went, “No! Don’t kill!” Carnage recovered, and overwhelmed Venom with his army of Carnage’d heroes. Then another obscure symbiote hero, Scorn, popped in to run Venom and Carnage over with a bulldozer and bring them into a facility that would blast their symbiotes off the hosts.
While Cletus and Flash had a fight based around the novelty that both were legless, the Venom symbiote latched onto a gorilla and ran for its life against an entire zoo full of animals with the Carnage symbiote. After almost being taken down by a Carnage lion (Spider-Man with the save), the gorilla returned to Flash and gave him the power to bring Cletus into custody.
As for the town-wide Carnage symbiote, most of it was taken out by an airstrike.
Minimum Carnage
Following up on Agent Venom, he had his own team-up arc with Scarlet Spider (Kaine) with the fun dynamic of a Venom who doesn’t want to kill and a Spider-Man who does. The two chased Carnage into the Microverse, where Carnage was able to create an army of symbiote clones. While Agent Venom was able to decapitate Carnage, the villain had attained some level of power where his body is more overall fluid and animated. In this case, Carnage could just reattach his head with no problem.
Although Flash had sedated his own symbiote and lacked the monstrous advantage, he was able to wipe out a bunch of the clones by amplifying his own inner sorrow outward through the Venom symbiote. Strangely, that’s not the first time Venom was able to do that. What’s left of Carnage slinked away, cackling.
Carnage and the clones returned to Earth and Voltron’d themselves into a giant Carnage. As Carnage tried to devour Agent Venom, Venom shoved a sonic grenade down Carnage’s throat and let the blast do the rest, taking out the enlarged Carnage symbiote almost completely. In the aftermath, Scarlet Spider jabbed one of his claws through Cletus’ eye and lobotomized him.
Venomverse
Venomverse is about a series of Venom hosts from different realities coming together to fight beings called Poisons. Under normal circumstances, Poisons are harmless. If one of them makes physical contact with a symbiote and its host, it transforms them into a nigh-unbeatable crystal-like creature with the Poison in control. By this point, Eddie Brock was Venom again and joined with all sorts of random symbiote heroes to the point that he came off as just a regular dude.
With their back against the wall, Eddie came up with an idea. They brought in Carnage from an alternate universe as a ringer. At first, Carnage fought against the Venoms, but they were reluctant to fight back. Once he saw the Poisons and understood that the Venoms wanted him to kill an army of twisted superheroes, he gladly joined their ranks. He just let them know that once he was done with the Poisons, he’d kill them next.
He ended up being a huge help, especially since the Poisons had a hard time bonding to the Carnage symbiote. Carnage died in an explosion fighting Poisons alongside Poison Deadpool (who was able to bypass his Poison’s mental control).
There was a sequel to this called Venomized where the Poisons returned and tried to invade Earth. They kidnapped Cletus, forced him to bond to an alternate universe Venom, and then bonded that to a Poison. While he was referred to as “Carnage” at times, the Carnage symbiote was never involved, so I’m going to skip this one.
But where was the Carnage symbiote during all of this?
The Red Goblin
At one point, Norman Osborn became the host for Carnage to give us a climactic villain to finish off Dan Slott’s lengthy run on Amazing Spider-Man. Knowing that Spider-Man was out of his league, J. Jonah Jameson decided to fight fire with fire by calling up Eddie Brock and blackmailing him into aiding Spider-Man. This led to a brief fight of Spider-Man, Venom, and repulsor-wielding Mary Jane against the Red Goblin.
Venom and Red Goblin brawled for a bit, but Red Goblin appeared to be immune to the usual symbiote weaknesses, so only Venom took damage. While he got some hits in, Eddie was too exhausted to continue. Instead he offered the symbiote to Spider-Man to give him the extra boost. This brief team-up allowed the two vigilante enemies to finally bury their lengthy rivalry.
Absolute Carnage
Now we get to Donny Cates’ bonkers run on Venom. Cletus had been resurrected and turned back into Carnage via a bunch of cultists who worshipped Knull, God of Symbiotes. Carnage then started going around eating the spines of those who were once host to a symbiote, getting stronger by the meal. Dark Carnage first fought Venom in a subway and easily overpowered him. Still, Venom got the win by grabbing onto the third rail while holding onto Dark Carnage. It was enough to knock Carnage loopy while Venom could get away and seek out help.
Venom and Spider-Man sought out Norman Osborn (who believed himself to be Cletus Kasady after the Red Goblin episode) and were ambushed by an army of inmates possessed by Carnage symbiotes. Overwhelmed, the two heroes broke through a wall and swung off into the night.
Venom got involved in another big fight against an army of Carnages and could have killed Osborn, but instead chose to save a wounded Mac Gargan nearby and brought him to safety. The Venom symbiote wasn’t happy with this and later left Eddie for Bruce Banner, giving us a fight between Venom Hulk and Dark Carnage. This turned out to be a dire choice, as Dark Carnage tore into Hulk’s brain, caused him to shrink back to Banner, then ate his spine. Carnage was stronger than ever.
Meanwhile, mad scientist the Maker had a machine that took the “symbiote codex” stuff Carnage was looking for out of former hosts without the nasty “tearing out their spinal column” part. Eddie unleashed the codex collection onto himself, turning him into a more powerful version of Venom. As he took on Cletus one last time, Carnage made note that Venom was screwed no matter what. Either Carnage killed and ate Eddie’s son Dylan or Eddie killed Carnage, which would wake up Knull and drive him to Earth.
Venom summoned the Necrosword to cut through Carnage, destroying him once and for all. For a time, at least.
Prelude to Knull
Wouldn’t you know it, killing Dark Carnage caused Eddie to absorb the Carnage symbiote into himself. Soon he was separated from Venom and stuck on an island while being bonded against his will to the Carnage symbiote. Dylan was able to remotely control the Venom symbiote and transformed it into a giant Venom T-rex. Like it wasn’t even bonding onto a dinosaur or anything. It was just the size and shape of a tyrannosaurus just because.
Eddie and Dylan had a dreamlike meeting in their minds while Carnage Eddie chopped down at the Venom dino. Eventually, the power of familial love was enough to overpower the Carnage symbiote and blow it up. Eddie rejoined with the Venom symbiote, and a little piece of Carnage latched onto a nearby shark to swim off and fight another day.
Okay, then! Phew! Going by every Venom vs. Carnage fight, I’ve judged them so that there have been six draws, eight victories for Carnage, and nine victories for Venom.
Congratulations, black ooze. Here’s hoping your red offspring doesn’t turn the tide at the box office.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be released in theaters on Oct. 1.

11 - Van Halen...
Hi there one and all.
Can I first start by saying farewell to Cozy. I've known him for about fifteen years and would not say he was a close friend or anything, but whenever we caught up with each other there was always time for a beer and chat. He was an A1 guy and will be greatly missed as a person and as a brilliant drummer. When John Bonham died he left the crown for the best rock drummer to Cozy, and I can't think of anyone worthy enough to take over. When Bonzo died we were doing a show at Madison Square Gardens, and as they were going into Champions Fred said, "This one's for John Bonham." The place erupted. If that's Bonzo's song, then I think Cozy should inherit We Will Rock You, because he was THE best rock drummer.
My social life has been quite hectic again. Caught up with Status Quo when they played here recently, they're always good fun to chat with, and they still put on a decent show. Next Sunday I'm gonna see Matchbox 20. Have a listen to their album, it's really good. Last night was the all new Van Halen, and thanks to my mate Nick I had one of those wonderful VIP passes hanging round my neck. I, along with the rest of the world was curious to know what Gary Cherone was going to be like. Brilliant. This has to be the best VH line up yet. The show was being filmed by MTV, so if you see it and the camera pans around to the sound desk, just look for the best looking guy in the building and that'll be me, standing next to him.
Anyway, back to VH. They are still a great rock band, a great live act and great musicians, and I still hate drum solo's. But back to Mr Cherone. We all know what he did at the Tribute, and we all know he's a huge Queen fan, and he's the closest singer to Freddie I've ever seen. His outfit, black satin shirt and flared black satin pants. I seem to remember FM wearing that around 75/76. His mic stand is the FM 'wand', except it's a lot longer. His movements are very theatrical, and dare I say camp at times, with lots of twists and turns, very Freddie. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not knocking him at all, he is an amazing showman and doesn't stop all night, even jumping into the crowd and running up the steps to the top of the arena, and then tumbling down like a stuntman. It's good rock 'n roll, so try and check them out, I don't think you'll regret it. (I've become concert reviewer all of a sudden) At times he even sounds like another singer, but I won't keep on, I'll leave it to somebody else. On the rock station, Triple M, one of the jocks this afternoon said, "He's been watching to many videos of our dear departed friend Freddie Mercury. His movements were exactly like his."
The first time I ever saw Van Halen was at a place called the Circus Krona(!) in good old Munich. I went along to see them with the curly one, and when we got there I had to instantly phone the studio and try and get Rog to come along because it was the biggest PA system I had ever seen in a place that size. When they started the intro tape it was so loud I thought my chest was gonna cave in, the bass just pinned you to your seat. Needless to say Brian was like a pig in shit. Before I tell you my little Queen story, I have to tell you about what I consider to be the best onstage patter I think I've ever heard. David Lee Roth was talking to the crowd between numbers and somebody in the crowd chucked a paper cup or something at him, he stopped talking, looked round in the general direction and said, "Hey man, you can throw what you like at me. Because tonight I'm going to f**k your chick." 20,000 people loved it, and so did I cause I still remember him saying it.
OK. We were touring the States, probably around 81/82, and we were flying to Portland. The band entourage were traveling on a wonderful private plane, and as the crew would have been in the bus for about 24 hrs we took as many as we could with us. The date was Sept.1, I remember because thats my birthday, and when we boarded the plane there was a huge cake with 'Happy Birthday Crystal' on it, and even more booze than we normally had. (Somebody must have expected something) One of the nice things about private planes is that you can make detours and the pilot flew around Mt St Helens a few times so we could see right into the crater, and it was still steaming, an amazing sight. Back to my birthday and a few of us needed some privacy, so Jim 'Mary' Devenney, Jimmy ' Idiot Boy' Barnett, Peter 'Feebie' Freestone, Roger '*******' Taylor and myself stocked up with a couple of drinks and retired to the Master Bedroom for a discussion on world politics. When the plane landed we were still a few thousand feet up in the air, legless is the best way to describe us. Hey, it was my birthday after all. We fell into the limo's and headed to the hotel, and the crew went on to theirs.
On arrival I found out that Van Halen were staying there, and they were playing that night, so I secured a few million passes and went looking for somebody to go partying with. After all it was 4pm and if I went to sleep I'd wake up feeling awful so I had to continue. RT said he was gonna crash, but Feebie and Terry were ready to go, so we said we would go to the first bar we came to. As it turned out it was a topless joint, and needless to say I was shocked and stunned, but a deals a deal. We were drinking shots of peppermint schnapps with vodka and orange chasers, very intelligent. At about 8pm we all shot off to watch VH, and they were great. After the show both bands arrange to meet in the bar at the hotel, but the bar is one of those stupid ones in the middle of the lobby. So there we are, the four Queenies, Feebie, Wally, Tunbrige, Terry and me, and the four Van Halens, all sitting around having a slurp, and VH's minders running around like headless chickens in the CIA. Outside the main doors were hundreds of fans, with a VH gorilla keeping them out, even to the point of stopping Ratty coming in. I had to argue with this moron to let one of our crew in, and he said, "If he goes anywhere near David or Eddie I'll throw him out." I could only answer with that wonderful two worded phrase starting and ending in F. Because it was like being in a fish bowl we decided to leave the bar, and everyone wandered off to various rooms to continue, the biggest bash being in Rogers suite.
At some unknown hour whilst I'm having a very pleasant conversation with a charming lady who called herself 'Naughty Nancy,' Jobby says to me, "I've been looking for you, Tunbridge wants you to call him now, it's urgent, Brians had an accident." Jobby was very drunk and I didn't know if he was serious or joking, so I phoned Tunbridges room and there was no reply. What do I do now? If Brians asleep and I wake him I'm in trouble, and if he has hurt himself and I don't call I'm still in trouble. What do I care? I'm drunk and fearless, so I phone and Tunbridge asks me to get there asap.
When I go in, Brians lying on the bed on his side, with the waste paper bin close at hand, and Tunbrige is grinning and mopping his brow with a damp cloth. Brian was mumbling stuff like "Don't let me die." (I'm sure most of us have been there at sometime or another) I probably shouldn't say this, but I had to grin, I thought it highly amusing. I got an explanation and told Tunbridge not to let him sleep on his back, and call me if there were anymore problems. I then returned to NN.
It turned out that when we all left the bar, Brian had gone to Eddie's room where they consumed huge quantities of Jack Daniels, and Brian not being a bourbon drinker, went to the toilet to worship the porcelain god, and threw up with such gusto he hit his head on the cistern, split his head open and nearly knocked himself out. The following night we played the same place VH did, and Mr May with band aid on head, played a blinder. A couple of years later, in the Rainbow in LA, I met Alex Van Halens estranged wife, and that, as they say, is another story all together.
