like okay I’ve been thinking about hornet for a while and it’s because

how fucking

lonely she is

like I’m the “hollow knight” ending— her half sibling will never know the truth and as her will she will protect Hallownest herself

or in the “sealed siblings”, not only we betray her during the fight and continue fighting PV instead of Radiance, but after that she becomes a dreamer and she is the only dreamer in that realm now

or in the “dream no more” ending, she passes out when ghost dream nails PV and only is awake after the fight of Radiance, the cutscene where she looks over and sees ghost’s mask shattered too 😭, and now her duty in that ending is over and she can leave Hallownest

or like in the “embrace the void” ending like BRO she’s waiting for us in the black temple, next thing she sees is the infection fading away and sees PV out of its chains and she— by herself— is prepared to fight PV

and now with Silksong? She’s alone in a entire different kingdom, yes she will make friends, foes, rivals, will get to know her past as well, etc.

But no matter what her path is lonely and I hope that in Silksong there’s this moment of reflection in her loneliness, I get that in the “Bonebottom” song that Larkin did how like there’s people living their lives but smth is underlining and there’s that loneliness in the melody

anyway yeah I love hornet a lot man and I don’t want her to be lonely 👍🏽

i really do love how idw sonic has been consistently having his principles come into question because it gives us so much insight into his character. as firmly established in issue #50, one of sonic’s Core Beliefs is that everyone deserves a chance at freedom. it is because of this belief that sonic helps others to the best of his ability, even if the person he’s protecting has tried to kill him in the past. this often lands him in some hot water

this is going to be a relatively long post so for the sake of not leaving a wall of text on the dashboard i’m putting it under a readmore

it all starts with eggman, rather, mr. tinker.

upon discovering his whereabouts, team chaotix decides to bring sonic over as they aren’t sure what to do with the knowledge that eggman seemingly has no memory of his past life. it’s important to note that sonic was initially distrustful of mr. tinker, but grew conflicted over seeing how he interacted with the villagers. that said, he was hesitant upon bringing eggman to justice as mr. tinker was completely different from the doctor.

it was only after seeing how mr. tinker trembled in fear before his own robots that sonic doubled down. when shadow arrived, also seeking to bring eggman to justice, sonic argued in eggman’s favor. he’s ultimately able to break apart shadow’s argument and convince him to spare him.

that said, i don’t think this instance fully stems from his beliefs. i mean, it’s pretty convenient that eggman had full-blown amnesia. knowing that there were other characters willing to give eggman the second chance...not quite sure it fully counts. rather, the first time we see this statement of his beliefs is with metal in issue #12.

tails was hesitant to wake up metal, but sonic insisted, confident that metal would be eager to call a truce. he tells him that he’s free. eggman’s gone, he can start a new life. however, metal refuses the truce and flies off. sonic is clearly upset by this, but abides by his principles: he gave metal a choice, and he made it. that’s that.

this exchange would later be paralleled with surge in issue #56, but i’ll get to that in a bit

of course, his decision to spare eggman immediately came back to bite him with the beginning of the metal virus arc. the quick and unexpected worldwide catastrophe turned sonic into a scapegoat. he wanted to spare eggman, so obviously this had to be his fault.

he is told this directly by both shadow in issue #19

the first time we see his beliefs challenged is with dr. eggman himself in issue #23. sonic’s desperate in his argument, wanting his decision to spare the doctor to have been worth something. why would eggman abandon his newfound freedom as mr. tinker in favor of returning to his old life as dr. eggman?

i’ve more to say on this, too, but let’s continue. the second time we see his beliefs challenged is in issue #24:

again, i’m not counting his initial defense of mr. tinker as he was originally wary himself + it’s a bit different when the person you’re defending is an amnesiac. i consider this instance as a challenge because of sonic's principles coming into play when defending his decision. “so–what? we have to assume the worst about everyone and everything? show no mercy to anyone? no second chances?” 

to issue #26.

hmm...what was it sonic said back in issue #12? oh, right! “we gave him the choice to live how he wants to. we’ve got to honor his decision.” wow, that sure looks likes “honoring his decision” if i ever did see it.

despite everything, sonic is still clinging to the idea that eggman has good in him, and that he is capable of change. i mean, can you blame him? at this point in the arc, sonic genuinely believes that the metal virus his is fault. if he stopped arguing for eggman to change, what would that mean for everyone who’s suffered? just something to think about.

we actually don’t see his beliefs come into question again until issue #44, after he and tails stopped the zeti’s attack on restoration hq.

zavok’s words hit close to home for sonic as he’s reminded of how his decisions to spare others have, indeed, come back to bite him. this does visibly bother him, too! however, sonic once again chooses to double down, surprising zavok with his confidence. don’t have much else to say on this one atm!

now, issue #50. surge enters the picture. she drags sonic to a more secluded area where they can fight 1 on 1. it is here where sonic directly explains his beliefs:

sonic values freedom, believing that everyone deserves to have a chance to be free. this is also why he refuses to kill; he would be taking away others’ chance at freedom. he then further explains that he won’t allow for her to take away others’ freedom, either.

it is at the end of this fight where we see the first parallel to his exchange with metal:

what’s different here is that he’s lamenting surge’s choice.

“we gave him the choice to live how he wants to. we’ve got to honor his decision.” 

vs.

“that’s the real problem with giving people a choice. you can’t stop them from making the wrong ones.”

the parallel continues in issue #56 with a direct challenge from surge:

to metal: “it’s over, man. eggman is done, and you don’t owe him anything. you have a chance to live your own life now. be your own person.”

surge: “i don’t want your pity or your friendship...i want you gone!” sonic: “but why? starline’s not here to make you do anything! freedom is right there, waiting for you. just take it!”

so...what insight does this provide into his character? sonic values freedom, he wants everyone to have an opportunity to be free. but what does that mean, exactly?

well, let’s look at what surge said to him. “you don’t get it.” she’s right: he doesn’t get it! sonic didn’t understand why eggman refused to go back to the more peaceful life he led as mr. tinker. he didn’t understand why metal chose to go back to eggman. he didn’t understand why surge still wanted to kill him. sonic has such a defined sense of what freedom means to him, of what is the correct way to be free, that he has failed to consider what freedom is for another

eggman’s personal freedom lies in his schemes, in taking over the world. metal’s personal freedom lies with eggman, with becoming the real sonic. surge’s freedom lies with sonic’s death, to be free from the shadow she was created to live in. sonic has a noble goal in wanting a better life for everyone, but why does it have to be his idea of it?

with his perception on what freedom means, sonic comes across as being naive. it lowkey makes me wonder if he’s as free as he thinks he is...

this could lead to some very interesting conflicts

now, there is like No Way this is gonna happen, but i would think it’d be very interesting if there ever came a point in the comics where sonic almost goes against his principles as a result of all the struggles he’s faced via others making the “wrong” choice. we’ve seen that he has had doubts in the past, once in issue #24 in his talk with tangle and then again, although for a moment, when talking to zavok

between eggman, metal, zavok, and surge all making the “wrong” decision, i wouldn’t be surprised if he ever reaches a point where he doesn’t want to risk it, where he oversteps and makes the decision for someone else, and then has to be talked out of it by his friends, who help him regain confidence in his beliefs

again, i don’t think this would actually happen! but boy i just think it’d be neat :]

tldr; i love conflict, i love when a character’s core belief keeps being questioned, i love when a character is accidentally a bit of a hypocrite

leverage is so fucking funny. man manages to find the most mentally ill and neurodivergent group of thieves on the market + an even more mentally ill guy whose literal job description was trying to chase all of them, and forces them into a found family speed-run by trying to blow them all up. they lowkey stage a full fucking country wide coup and are like eh 🤷 just another wednesday. this might be a fun place to vacation tho i guess. sophie shows up to her own funeral twice. they're so good at convincing people of their shit that they make a guy's body start reacting to an illness he doesn't have because it isn't real. go completely out on a limb and basically hand this one guy a new password for his computer so they can get into it and he goes with it. parker and hardison have straight up just "fake it 'till you make it"d into the fbi without even attempting to cover their tracks beyond just These Two Guys. half their clients never asked to be their clients and don't know they're their clients, and the other half are random people who find them who fuckin knows how, meanwhile no government agency can track them down without selling their soul to sterling. they make a point to have a dramatic scene w a Big Bad Shadowy Government Guy who doesn't actually get caught or brought to justice or anything telling them he's going to hunt them all down, and in any other show this would probably earn at least a minor arc later on but he literally never shows up again. an entire season finale hinged on a cake and a bunch of clams. they accidentally made eliot a celebrity not once, not twice, but three times. parker blew up her foster parents' house when she was like. nine. and it's hardly a footnote. hardison is just casually an artistic prodigy but it's only ever brought up for the most background of background gags. eliot's biggest beef with parker and hardison for like two and a half seasons is that they won't stop making weird food with lasers and refuse to realize they can't make a decent beer to save their lives. sophie's immediate response to being shot is to call her shooter a wanker. there's a character who has literally killed a man with a mop and they had the audacity to only put her in one episode.

there are a lot of evil people in the world and a lot of darkness in the world and so it’s very important for me to stress that now more than ever is the time to spread kindness and compassion. combat the evil by not only not partaking in it, but actively refuting it. destroy the notion that being compassionate or generous or kind to someone is uncool or embarrassing or even scary. be the change you want to see. start a chain reaction. positivity only breeds more positivity. do an act of kindness for someone so that that person who is too afraid to do it themselves can see you, realize that they’re not alone, and perhaps sheepishly follow your example. and then the next person who is too afraid but sees that person can do the same. when bad news comes out about bad people or horrible atrocities in the world it’s such an easy impulse to despair, and obviously it’s important to feel what you need to feel. grieve. be angry. be sorrowful. be empathetic. but dust off your pants and get up and be a part of a chain reaction that, no matter how small the scale, and spread compassion and love and care. all the reasons why you might not—“it’s hard! it’s scary! people will make fun of me! it’s useless because there’s too much evil!” are all grade A arguments as to why you should. you have no idea how many people you could inspire to do the same. even if it doesn’t get you anyway far, you can at least say you have the nobility of trying. please choose love and please choose life. you are worth loving and you are worth inspiring others to love
