Jack and His Wife: A Retelling of "Jack and the Beanstalk"
Jill raced through the giant’s kitchen, clinging to Jack’s hand. A table towered over their heads. Chair legs stood like a forest of trees. Footsteps like thunder pounded beyond the walls of the room.
Before today, Jill had thought herself fearless, but those footsteps made her quake with terror. Jack, meanwhile, had never looked so capable. Was this tower of strength the fuzzy-headed dreamer who’d left their farm this morning?
Jack helped Jill to climb inside a cupboard taller than their cottage, then dragged the door closed behind them.
“We’re safe,” he breathed, holding Jill close in the darkness. “He won’t find us here.”
Through a crack in the door, Jill saw a giant enter the room—a coarse man, taller than any tree she’d ever seen. His face was red and knobby, his hair mostly gone. He threw himself into a chair with a noise like a thunderstorm and bellowed for his wife.
Jill whispered, “What are we going to do?”
“We wait,” Jack said. “He’ll eat his lunch, then he’ll sleep, and we can leave.”
Jill looked in awe at her husband. He was so steady. So sure. Where was the incompetent fool she’d married?
“You’ve been here before,” she realized. “All those days you disappeared and came back with food.”
Jack nodded. “I had to provide for you somehow. Everything else I’ve tried has failed.”
“You told me you’d hired yourself out to some local farmers.”
“He is a local farmer—directly above our cottage. I’ve done some odd jobs for his wife.”
“You never said they were giants!”
“Would you have believed me?”
Jill blushed. She’d have thought her idiot husband had turned lunatic as well.
She’d thought Jack climbed the beanstalk out of idleness—enjoying the view rather than working the land. She had followed him today out of frustration, thinking to drag him back to earth with scoldings and nagging. Instead, she’d found Jack braving a land of giants in the clouds.
In the oversized kitchen, the giant’s wife cooked a feast for her husband—entire cattle, flocks of chickens—but she never came near their cupboard. This hiding place was dark, cluttered with buckets, and smelled faintly of vinegar, but for now, it seemed safe.
Jack made a seat in a massive pile of rags, then settled Jill into it. “Rest while you can. We’ll need to be ready to run.” After making certain Jill was comfortable, he curled up on a thin patch at the edge of the pile.
He was so considerate. He was always considerate, Jill realized, but down on the ground, it annoyed her. His small courtesies seemed like pitiful apologies for the larger ways he failed as a husband.
Jill had fallen in love with Jack’s dreaming ways. He’d been charming and convincing, overflowing with grand hopes for their future. Unfortunately, in twelve years of marriage, none of his dreams became reality. Crop after crop failed, livestock died, and Jill became bitter. Jack never did, and she hated him for it. No matter how desperate they became, he was always sure that next year’s crop would fix everything or his grand new scheme would make them rich as kings.
The beans had been his worst blunder. Jack had traded their last sickly cow for a handful of seeds guaranteed to grow a forest of vines. He’d spun visions of a bumper crop, a better life. Jill had raged and thrown the seeds out the window.
The seeds did grow massive vines practically overnight, but they were a menace. The beanstalk took up half their garden. The inedible vines showed no signs of bearing fruit. Every day, they hacked at runners and roots that threatened to destroy their cottage. Jack put a cheerful face on it; Jill had only complained.
Outside their cupboard, a shout from the giant sent shivers up Jill’s spine. “Did he just ask for ‘man-flesh’?”
Jack sat up and nodded grimly. “Fortunately, his wife objects.”
“You work for this monster?”
“I’d be his next meal if he saw me. His wife has a softer heart. She hides me from him and gives us food.”
“I’d rather starve than know you risk yourself this way.”
Jack gave Jill an astonished look that made her insides twist with shame. Had it been so long since she’d expressed concern for his well-being?
Jack stepped closer to the door. “If it were only me, I wouldn’t risk it. But we could save the whole valley. He’s been hoarding the water somehow, keeping it here in the clouds. If I could find a way to release it, it could end the drought.”
The giant slammed down an empty glass, leaned back in his chair, and called for music.
Jack said grimly, “We’re also not the only humans here.”
The giant’s wife carried a golden cage into the kitchen. Huddled in the center, looking small as a canary, sat a crying eight-year-old-girl.
“Farmer Gidding’s youngest,” Jack explained. “Sings like a nightingale. Not big enough to eat. He keeps her as a pet.”
“How horrible," Jill whispered.
As the little girl piped a tearful song, Jack said, “I had hoped I could rescue her today, but now that you’re here, plans will have to change.”
As Jack gazed through the crack, a ray of light illuminated his fearless form. Jill had thought her husband’s optimism made him a fool, but there was another word for a man who didn’t let defeat discourage him, who looked at impossible odds and dared to try anyway.
Hero.
How had she ever stopped loving him?
Jill stepped to Jack’s side. “Let me help you, my love.”
Jack looked at her with surprise. “Truly?”
Jill took his hand. “Truly.”
Jack grinned.
#
When the giant fell asleep, they moved as one.
The child came with them down the beanstalk.

NaClYoHo Day 3
Okay salty pirates, today I have a question: what’s the best product for getting mildew/mold out of bathroom tile caulk? You know, the dark stuff that grows between the tiles. Because I’ve been testing stuff today and nothing much seems to be working (CLR for Bathrooms, Grease Lightning, Barkeep’s Friend). The steam cleaner is doing the best but it’s still not even doing much.
Relatedly, do “daily shower” sprays actually do anything? The kind you just spray in the shower after you’re done and then leave it to dry?
In any case, aside from testing various chemicals, I finally got round to removing the fold-out table from the wall it’s hung on, freeing up either some space for the curio cabinet in a more well-lit area OR a place to hang my giant Vincent van Gogh poster I got from the Van Gogh exhibit. Still deciding on that one. I also sanded down the mounting holes and spackled them. I’m definitely going to have to spend a whole podcast someday paint-patching all the spackled holes I’ve made in my walls, but I also need to dig out the green paint and buy a new can of cream paint, so I might as well wait until later in the month when I know I won’t have done any more damage. :)
Now I just have to figure out what to do with the table. One hates to throw it out; I could donate it but the donation pile is getting...sizeable and I need to figure out somewhere to donate it all. For now it’s in the front hallway chillin’ out, I guess.
I didn’t actually listen to a podcast today, but instead since my audio copy of Children Of Dune finally became available from the library, I started listening to that. I’ll probably go back to podcasts for timing reasons, but I’ve only got 21 days to get through this doorstop of a book so I’m sure it’ll crop up again...

Yui: That’s the 20th catch of the day, right? It’s a big one too!
Azusa: Yuma, that’s amazing. Eve and I have yet to catch a single fish...
Yuma: Ya always reel them in way too slow. I’m sure you’d be able to catch a few if ya can get yer timin’ right.
Azusa: I see...I’ll try just a little longer then.
Yuma: Yeah, that’s the spirit!
Yui: I always reel them in too fast so they get away...
Yuma: You’ve been makin’ progress as well, so don’t beat yerself up too much.
If ya keep goin’, you’ll get the hang of it soon enough.
Yui: Yeah. Thanks, Yuma-kun.
Azusa: Eve, let’s try our best together, okay...?
Yui: Yes, let’s!
Yuma: Say, I think we’ll have better luck over here! Let’s move places!
Azusa: Sure...!
Yui: ( I don’t have much experience fishing, but thanks to Yuma-kun and Azusa-kun, it’s been a lot of fun. )
Azusa: Yuma, it’s really impressive that you’re not just good at growing crops, but can fish as well...
Yui: Yeah, I agree!
Yuma: Haah!? The fuck are ya guys sayin’!? Geez, stop blabberin’ ‘bout that shit and just focus on reelin’ in some fish instead.
If ya don’t keep a close eye on yer rod, ya won’t see it when the fish bite.
Azusa: Yeah...I knoーー Wait, uwaah...!
Yuma: Look, it’s a bite! Reel that bad boy in before it escapes!
Azusa: Y-Yeah...
Yuma: Hey, Yuma. It’s too heavy, I can’t reel it in at all...
Yui: Azusa-kun, are you okay!?
Yuma: Hold up! I’ll help out as well!
*Creaaak*
Yuma: ...Fuck, just how strong is this one!?
Yui: ( No way! Yuma-kun has joined in as well, yet they can’t seem to pull it out of the water at all! )
( The fishing line looks like it might snap soon. )
Yuma: This is nothin’ like anything I’ve caught before...! Could it be one of those legendary giant fish!?
Azusa: Eh? ...Really?
Yuma: Yeah, I’m positive! ‘Kay, this bad boy is endin’ up on our plate tonight! We gotta catch it for sure, Azusa!
Azusa: Y...Yeah...
Yuma: Then, let’s combine our strengths and go for it. Ready?
Azusa: Okay! I’ll try my best...!
Yuma: Ready, go!
*SPLASH*
Yui: ( Ah, they reeled it in! ...But. )
Azusa: Yuma, this is...
Yuma: Haah!? The fuck is this shit!?
Yui: ( This black thing covered in moss attached to the other end of the line, could it be... )
( A sunken swan boat? )
Yuma: Oi! Why did ya catch this thing!?
Azusa: You could say that it’s a rare catch, technically...
Yui: ( I didn’t think they’d reel in a swan boat...This really went beyond my imagination. )
Yuma: I thought we’d be in for a feast tonight. You’ve gotta be shittin’ me...

23, 45, and 50 with piglin hybrid Techno and tiny avian hybrid Phil? ‘v‘ you don’t gotta do all or any of these! ALSO I WANNA SAY THAT I LOVE YOUR WRING SM ❤️💕💖💕❤️
Thank you so much, I'm happy you like my writings!!!! :DD
So sorry for the late answer, but know that I appreciate your ask so much
———
• "You're going to be okay, I promise"
• "Shhh, just sleep, you're safe"
• "No one is going to hurt you again"
Piglin hybrid Techno and Tiny avian hybrid Phil
Content warning: Calling a person as "It" and language
——————
A gunfire shot echoed.
"There it is!" A shout echoed, a man pointing towards high trees. A dark green shadow— No, not leaves— floating limpingly amongst the brown of the branches and trunks.
"Is there a net?!" another shout. Another man. Panting as they chase the tiny flying figure.
"The last net has been fired two shots ago!" the first one called out
"Fuck— It's a hybrid tiny, too" A huff, a big one. Two people in arms finally stopping, holding their knees in exhaustion. "Damn it, that'll sell so well"
They stopped.
But not the tiny, though.
The occasional sharp small branch sticking out, the leaves that's positioned unfortunately fit for a papercut, and the eventual large branch finally hitting the golden haired avian hybrid tiny in his head. The injuries came together, the no-longer-shiny black wings finally gave up, and the flying figure of a tiny avian hybrid fell down. Now stopping after the hunters has stopped.
ooo
Being a piglin hybrid has its perks, Techno thinks. The piglin on the nether wouldn't go exactly after you unprovoked, you can still live in the cold (not advised, by the way, it sucks in the cold), and you can adapt to the overworld just fine— well, excluding the townspeople avoiding you, at least.
Of course, the good also comes with the bad. The piglin back at home absolutely despises you(because you look 'too human' or whatever), the nether temperature eventually became absolutely unbearable, and..
"Oooh, gold" The lingering feeling of attraction to gold. Except this time, it's not gold.
But a golden-haired tiny.
Listen, Techno's not heartless, there's no way he'll abandon another living being in help, no matter how awkward it may be— imagine waking up to a giant piglin hybrid, if that isn't awkward Techno doesn't know what it is (No, it's absolutely not fear, what do you mean) — So Techno took the tiny in.
After leaving the nether dimension, Techno tried living in a tundra biome. But it didn't work for him— he's not used to the cold— So he tried to live in the forest. It's a decent place, he figured out he can grow crops for a living— trading is also a steady source of income in the overworld. But getting back on the topic— Techno lives in a cabin in the woods, and is currently carrying a tiny home. It's a questionable situation, but hey, it's the thought that counts right? (or however the overworld saying goes)
Techno inspected the unconscious tiny— He's still breathing, fortunately. Techno doesn't know how to feel if he picked up a tiny corpse— Several cuts are visible on the tiny's skin. It doesn't look that bad— excluding the large cut on his side and the practically broken right wing— M-hm, not that bad.
Step one, Washing your hands before cleaning the injury. It's a fairly-large wound for someone so small, and fortunately, the wound has stopped bleeding, so Techno shouldn't worry about that.
Next step, applying antibiotic. Techno's certain he has a bottle of antibiotics— yeah, he has one— an almost brand-new bottle of antibiotics, he's glad he bought one yesterday.
As soon as the antibiotic made contact with the tiny's wounds, though, the tiny shot up with a hiss of "Fuck—!"
。。。
Phil woke up when Techno was washing his hands.
He had heard a stream of water and several footsteps— he thought he fell unconscious near a river. It doesn't matter, he can get up later, he's too hurt for getting up.
Until the stinging pain emerged from his side.
"Fuck-!" Phil cried out, moving away from the supposed source of pain
That fumkign hurts. Phil doesn't know what happened, it may be a bee— but bees doesn't attack unprovoked, then, what?
With each second passing Phil's head pounded even more, forcing him to focus and unfocus on his surroundings. A Wooden floor— Polished wooden floor, not the usual tree bark footing he occasionally sees— Unfamiliar surroundings— No trees or the usual greens he sees everyday, no, it's a human furniture surroundings.
As if his mind is saving the worst for last, Phil's vision finally focuses on the giant figure in front of him. The figure of a giant piglin hybrid.
Instantly, Philza's mind clicked. Human— no— hybrid furniture surroundings, him being unconscious, the stinging pain on his sides— Fuck— The piglin was going to eat him.
"Fuck no—" Phil breathed out, scooting backwards. Unfortunately, it's futile, as he quickly reached the edge of the wooden table. Phil looked at the drop, and fumk, it's a fucking high drop— his- his wings are broken
"Uh—" The piglin hybrid called out. Phil's head turned to look at him— head still pounding too hard to focus on the piglin hybrid's expression. "You're... you're hurt." The piglin hybrid gave Phil a sad excuse of an explanation. No shit, sherlock.
"S-so?" Phil glared, trying so hard to not fall off the table— or should he? Is one wing enough to shield his fall..?
"I'm... I'm trying to treat your wounds..?" the piglin hybrid said. Another look from Phil and he saw a white bottle of whatever— it's suspicious "Look, I found you unconscious on the forest floor, I'm just trying to heal you"
Phil is not listening to the guy, still scanning the things on the giant piglin hybrid's hands. A white suspicious bottle, a clump of cotton possibly doused in the suspicious bottle's content, and a wide, white, suspicious rope(..?) On the other end of the table.
"I'm not going to hurt you." the sudden voice from the piglin hybrid startles Phil. Maybe it's because of the reassuring tone of the man, suddenly, Phil's mind starts to focus more "You're going to be okay, I promise"
With that, the giant lowered the things in his hands. First, the suspicious white bottle. "Antibiotics" it reads.
"It's for cleaning your wound— it stings, that's why you woke up— but it's not a bad thing" The piglin hybrid explained, noticing Phil's confused expression (Antibiotics sounds fuckinh suspicious) "And to apply the antibiotics, I used the cotton" He lowered the cotton near the 'Antibiotics' bottle— but not too close to Phil. "see, I'm not trying to hurt you"
"...and that rope?" Phil questions. He's convinced about the antibiotics, but not the weirdly-shaped rope
"...rope?" The piglin hybrid blinked, confused.
"That!" Phil pointed at the weirdly-shaped rope "That weirdly-shaped rope!"
"You've... never seen a bandage before..?"
"...what?"
"That's- that's a bandage— it's for keeping the wound clean and preventing it from opening up again" He explained, a hint of amusement behind his confusion. Okay. "Are you satisfied now?"
Maybe it's because of embarassment, maybe it's because of finally feeling convinced, but Phil nodded to the human's word.
The consequence of agreeing fucking hurts— Fuck, it hurts.
The antibiotics really does fucking sting.
"Fuck!" another shout, and Techno— Phil had learned his name in the middle of the stinging pain (Saying Piglin hybrid man is too long and well, rude)— Techno finally finished applying the antibiotic.
"Done." Techno said, tone light like he never stung Phil. "You can rest there, I think I still have spare cloths for you to sleep on"
"Wait, sleep?" Phil spoke up, bewildered. Sure, he's exhausted after all of the things happening today, but that doesn't mean he want to sleep in a human— wait, no, Hybrid— but still, a Giant's house. That's a death flag right there.
"Ya" Techno said, Another light answer. "your body need to rest to have the energy to heal. Also, the bandage will need to be changed"
"Sleep here?"
"Ya" Techno's response is light. So light, no care for Phil's bewildered tone as he stuffed the tools he used to treat Phil back to wherever it belongs.
"And you're not going to hurt me?" Phil asked. No way. He's a fucking giant.
"That just sounds abyssmal— I've just healed you" Techno said, his tone still light as he rummages around his furnitures, looking for something.
"So then.. what are you going to do?" Phil asked, staring at Techno as he stacked several cloths together (what the fuck is he doing..?)
"Sleep, probably— I was actually going to trade new seeds since new season is coming up, but then you happened sooo" Techno trailed off, concentrating. "Done. Here— you can sleep here" Techno's figure moved away to reveal what Phil assumed was a bed— It's actually just several cloths stacked together— but it's nice.
"You made a bed for me?" Phil asked, looking at the bed Techno just made
"Yeah— do you need help getting here?" Techno gestures towards Phil's stature— small and has a broken wing
Phil looked at where Techno is gesturing. "..yeah"
"Should— Should I just.. pick you up at the back of your clothes or...?" Techno asked. He was expecting Phil to elaborate on how to pick a tiny up without being rude— but Phil's lack of elaboration speaks volume.
It ended up with Phil asking for Techno to give him his hand for platforming— Which after Techno quickly replied with a "sure", Phil became very anxious about standing on a giant's hand— Fortunately, Techno didn't try to hurt him or anything (Maybe it's Phil who scratched him— Bird claws as feet and all) and Phil reached the bed.
It's a fairly-nice bed, In Phil's opinion. Because it is practically just a ton of cloths stacked together, it became a very comfy bed. So when Phil rested his body on it, his exhaustion and thought caught up to him.
It's a first time for Phil. Being inside a giant's house, and.. being this near a giant. He's restless— he can't fucking sleep— he shouldn't sleep. The possibility of the giant hurting him, the possibility of another giant barging into this house and catching Phil... He's scared.
"Shhh, just sleep, you're safe" a sudden voice from Techno startled him. Was Techno there the whole time? More than that, did Techno realized Phil's worry? "I'm not going to hurt you— Like I said. You're going to be okay," Techno said, taking a seat beside the cabinet Phil's bed is placed.
What is it? Maybe it's because Techno sounds so.. reassuring, but Phil's heart solidified at Techno's word.
"No one is going to hurt you again" was the last thing Phil heard from Techno before Phil falling asleep.
Maybe it's trust that made Phil believe in Techno.

Laundry Day
    It had been building for weeks now. Piling up, bit by bit. Iruka ignored it for as long as he could, shoving it to the back of his mind and going about his daily business, teaching at the Academy and pulling shifts at the Mission Desk like nothing was wrong. But eventually, even he could deny it no longer. When he checked his closet and found that all he had to wear was a single ketchup-or-maybe-blood-stained crop-top, tight yoga shorts, and flip-flops, he knew it was finally time to stop putting it off. There was no other choice left.
    He had to do laundry.
    “Oh my God, who did you kill?” Anko asked as he dragged the bulging laundry bag down the hallway of his apartment complex.
    “You, if you don't back off,” Iruka snapped at her. “There's just enough room in here for a body.”
    “I sincerely doubt that,” Anko said, cocking an eyebrow at the huge bag. “Seriously, what gives? That thing must be, like, a hundred pounds. Is this some kind of new training craze?”
    “It's laundry day,” Iruka stated. Anko blinked. “I haven't done laundry in two months,” he went on impatiently. “It's kind of hard to find the time between my job teaching, my job at the Mission Desk, and my other job keeping Naruto and Sasuke from killing or kissing each other in public, and since they all count as full-time jobs with none of the benefits, I literally have nothing else to wear.”
    “Ah. That would explain the booty shorts.”
    “They're called yoga shorts, and they're comfortable.”
    “I don't care what they're called, your ass looks amazing in them.”
    “Stop ogling me!” Iruka barked, his cheeks flaming. Anko's eyes didn't move. “Am I gonna have to go have another talk with HR?” Anko paled.
    “Oh, God, please don't. Last time I had to watch a three-hour film on sexual harassment in the workplace. I had to take notes. There was a quiz after.”
    “Then stop. STARING.” Iruka gave Anko one last glare, then continued on his way, dragging his laundry bag after him with all the dignity he could muster. Which wasn't alot, considering the bag was heavy as fuck and he'd kinda been neglecting his standard workout routine. Because, you know, three jobs or whatever.
    There were quite a few laundromats scattered about Konoha, all stocked with specialized, heavy-duty cleaning supplies for shinobi needs (to aid in the removal of blood, guts, and other icky bits picked up from slaughtering enemies and whatnot). The one Iruka usually frequented was located about ten blocks away, which normally wasn't too bad, especially if Iruka went by rooftop. However, that was quite impossible at the moment, considering his giant bag of dirty clothes was hefty and ungainly enough that it would probably squirt right out of his arms and kill an unfortunate pedestrian below. Also, it was the middle of summer and the sun had decided to be an asshole that day, blazing down like some kind of fire Jutsu and scalding every living thing in sight. To make matters worse, the laundry bag seemed to grow heavier with every step until it was like dragging Hokage mountain down the street. So by the time Iruka finally managed to heave the bag halfway across Konoha and up a flight of stairs into the laundromat itself, he was a hot, sweaty mess, his ponytail half-undone and hanging in his face, damp clothing sticking to his skin.
    Which was exactly why Hatake motherfucking Kakashi was in there, of fucking course. There was no way Iruka's silly little crush wouldn't be in the one place he'd hoped he wouldn't be.
    Iruka wanted to crawl into the nearest drier and turn it on.
    Maybe he won't see me, he thought as he quietly slipped inside.
    “Hey, Iruka!” Kotetsu shouted from across the entire laundromat. “Nice shorts!”
    Everyone immediately turned to look.
    Well I know who I'm going to kill now, Iruka thought to himself miserably as he was ogled by every shinobi in the room. He made a mental checklist and vowed to prank each one in retaliation. His body was a temple.
    “You know you could have just stuffed that in a scroll,” Genma said after peeling his gaze off Iruka's thighs, twitching his senbon at the bulging bag.
    “I'll stuff you in a fucking scroll,” Iruka hissed at him, wiping a sweaty strand of hair out of his face.
    “Ooh, baby, talk dirty to me,” Genma cooed.
    “You're disgusting,” Iruka said flatly. He glanced around, looking for a table with any inch of free space, perfectly willing to fight someone for it. There, in the back, he spotted one last table...right next to Kakashi. Because, you know, this day couldn't get any worse. Iruka debated waiting an extra ten minutes or so to see if the laundromat emptied out a bit, saw Genma wiggle his eyebrows suggestively at him, and decided anything was better than this. Steeling himself with a deep breath, he dragged his bag over to the open table beside Kakashi and started dumping clothes out.
    Kakashi, thankfully, didn't respond to his sudden arrival except for a polite grunt and nod in greeting. Iruka nodded back, then focused for the next several minutes on organizing his dirty clothes, intent on ending this humiliation as quickly as possible. As he worked, he couldn't help but sneak glances at Kakashi while he sorted his lights and darks. The man was busy folding his own laundry, bent over the table, his movements precise and methodical, done with the utmost care. Iruka almost suspected he was using the Sharingan to achieve such perfect folds. He glanced down at the clothes themselves, expecting combat fatigues or maybe a pair of well-worn sweats.
    Instead, he was surprised to discover Kakashi was folding almost two dozen miniature flak jackets with some kind of funny emblem on the back.
    “Did...did you accidentally shrink that in the drier or something?” Iruka blurted out before he could stop himself. Kakashi looked over at him, blinking lazily, then chuckled, a husky sound that made Iruka's knees weak.
    “Of course not,” he said, his voice warm with amusement. “This is my ninken's laundry.”
    Iruka had to hold in a snort. The famed Copy-Nin of Konoha, scourge of all enemies, feared by missing-nin, doing his ninken's laundry? It was ridiculous! It was absurd! It was...
    Adorable, quite frankly. Iruka's heart melted a little at the sight of him carefully piling up their little vests, careful not to crease them.
    “It's a pain,” Kakashi went on. “They're so picky. I have to use unscented detergent and dryer sheets or they complain.”
    “Too bad they don't sell a fresh cat-shit scent,” Iruka chuckled awkwardly before biting his lip.
    Kakashi, however, took no offense, throwing his head back and laughing aloud.
    “Ha! They'd like that! Maybe they have a three-day-old steak one, too.” He grinned at Iruka through his mask, one visible eye twinkling. Iruka flushed, and he quickly turned back to his laundry, realized he was holding a pair of underwear, and flung it away, his face flushing darker as he busied himself with sorting again. “You've got quite a load,” Kakashi went on after a moment, nodding at the mountainous pile in front of him.
    “Yeah, I've been putting it off for a while,” Iruka grumbled distractedly, searching for a stray sock's missing partner with no luck. “This is literally the last thing I have to wear, so I either do laundry today or go into work tomorrow naked.”
    “I knew I should have finished that mission report,” Kakashi said under his breath.
    “Very funny,” Iruka scoffed in annoyance, shoving his first few loads into the nearby washing machines.
    “Oh, I'm dead serious.”
    The annoyance turned to anger, and Iruka looked over at the other man to give him a piece of his mind, only to find him staring right back, his warm grin having grown into something much more inviting, bordering on flirtatious. Iruka's sharp comment died in his throat and he cleared it roughly, feeling hot all over. Awkwardly, he reached for change in his pockets, then froze. He looked down and swore. He didn't even fucking have pockets. Stupid booty- YOGA shorts. He'd forgotten the quarters, and he didn't dare leave his clothes unattended for fear someone like Genma would be a creep and steal a pair of underwear or something. Also, Izumo and Kotetsu had a habit of borrowing things and never returning them, and he could see them eyeing several of his favorite shirts from across the laundromat. He'd just have to pack everything up and return home. What a waste, the whole trip had been for nothing-
    The clink of coins snapped him out of his mental cursing, and he looked up in shock to see Kakashi paying for his loads.
    “Oh no,” he sputtered, “please, Kakashi, you don't have to-”
    “It's fine. You can pay next time,” Kakashi said with a wave.
    “But I...well...oh, alright, fine.” Iruka sighed, giving in. “Thank you.”
    “So it's a date then,” Kakashi said. “Which cycle do you prefer?”
    “Cotton cycle, cold water, extra rinse, please,” Iruka said automatically, then blinked. “Wait, I'm sorry, did you say-”
    “See you next week,” Kakashi was already halfway to the door, his ninken's clothes tucked under his arms and a pile of quarters left on Iruka's table for the rest of his loads. Iruka gaped after him in shock.
    Had that...really just happened? Had he really exchanged pleasantries with one of the most infamous shinobi of Konoha while folding laundry? Or had it all been merely a dream, a figment of his imagination-
    “You washing those shorts, too?” Genma asked hopefully, leering like a hungry wolf.
    Nope, he was definitely awake. Iruka threw some Tide-pods at Genma to chase him away before turning back to his loads, shaking his head in wonder.
    He'd definitely be doing his laundry more often from now on.

What do you think it was like?” Rafael asked as he hacked at the tough vegetation with his hoe, pulling the dense vines into a pile in the pathway. The soil was nitrogen poor, even when heavily fertilized, and the local flora had a fibrous root that was always threatening to choke out their transplanted species. The ground cover was too thick for the harvesters to handle, so the crops were still pulled by hand at the end of the wet season.
“Why do you always ask that?” I said, stooping down to the ground and dusting the dirt from the now exposed potatoes, gently brushing them clear like an archaeologist might some ancient, precious treasure. I pulled the tubers from the ground and put them into the cart.
“You don’t wonder?” He leaned on the handle of the hoe, brushing the sweat from his dark brow.
“I try not to.”
“Come on, Shan. If I have to have one more meeting about soil nutritiation, I’m going to kill myself. And you’re down there all the time…”
“We’re not having this conversation again.” I hadn’t come out to the fields looking for a fight, but I was always prepared for one. “Stop changing the subject.”
He frowned. “Please don’t start.”
“I’m just saying. The season’s almost over, and we’re not getting any younger.”
He put down the hoe and knelt down next to me, lifting another potato and cradling it. He looked at me plaintively. “I just… are you sure this is what you want? To spend your life toiling in the dirt? I mean, your father…”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “My father is a drunk, and he has nothing to do with this.”
“He didn’t used to be. He might snap out of it. Some of them do,” he said. “I’m just worried you’ll get bored of me, of this. It’s not a glamorous life.”
“No, but it would be our life, Rafe,” I pleaded.
“One more season. The bureau is due to review the allotments soon, and I almost have enough saved up for a down-payment on my own forty.” He kissed me gently on the forehead, then stood, and stared up toward the sky and sighed. “You honestly don’t wonder? What it was like, knowing what was happening out there?”
I stood too, matching his gaze. I put my arm around his wrist and held it gently to my chest. “Come with me. I have to check on him, and then maybe you’ll see why I’d much prefer to farm potatoes with you.”
It had been one-hundred fifty-nine years since we’d last heard from anyone outside the system. The Network had gone down July 17th, 2938, or at least that’s what the history books said. And that is only if you went by the original Earth calendar, which no one did anymore. With a twenty-eight hour day and a rotation period of six-hundred seventeen days, matching time here on New Caledonia to that on Earth was pointless. With The Network, information would take an interminable time to transit the two-hundred eighty-four light year and four relay distance between us; even then, relativity was unclear on whether there was any such thing as simultaneous events at these stellar distances anyway. For me it was irrelevant: the Earth might as well not exist, may not exist, and Sol was just a very dim star you could barely make out in the southern sky.
For us, it had been a normal Sunday, Wet Season 12, CSY 134. New Caledonia is an eccentric planet with a single landmass in its northern hemisphere surrounded by a large planetary ocean. Because of its near forty-five degree axial tilt relative to the ecliptic, the year is divided into two seasons of nearly equal length. During the Wet Season, the more direct sunlight heats the seas, driving strong currents that bring strong storms to the western coast. The moist air blows in and dumps copious rain across the western plains before climbing into the central mountain range that separates the continent, the only remnant of the clash between the two gigantic tectonic plates that formed the land we now call home. This quirk of a jetstream leaves the eastern plains beyond the mountains in a giant rain shadow, barren and dry. For this reason, all the major settlements are here in the west, and in the Dry Season, the ocean gyres cease and we hunker down for a long, cold, arid winter.
The rains were strong that Wet Season, or so the stories go. At first they though the heavy cloud cover and unstable air was interfering with communication to the satellite arrays. Minkowski Transmission provides a supraliminal link through the interstellar void, but it was still subject to the space-time warps of a heavy gravity well; we are forced to rely on more pedestrian broadcast methods to communicate with the Network Relays out in longer orbits free from gravitational interference. But they checked the dishes and the transmission center and everything was fine. Then they checked again. Then they waited until the Dry Season, and checked again. And then they waited.
We walked up the path to the main road where I’d parked my truck, and Rafe loaded the cart, only half-full of potatoes, into the rear cargo bed. “How is he doing?” he asked, hopping into the cab and pulling on his safety belt.
I pushed the ignition switch and the engine purred to life. The battery chimed a plea that it needed to be recharged soon, and I felt that deep in my soul in a way the inanimate vehicle could never understand. “He has good days and bad.”
“How much longer?”
“Too long.” I put the truck into gear and programmed the destination into the navigational system. It lurched forward, the tracks catching slightly in the soft, damp clay of the plain. “Honestly I stopped counting a long time ago.”
We made it maybe half a mile before the rain started again, at first light pricks ricocheting off the windscreen of the truck, but quickly growing to fat blobs that exploded with a violent thud. I opened the valve to the distillation unit on the roof and a slow drip of cleansed water trickled into my canteen. After a few seconds I closed the valve and took a sip; the water was cool and clear. I offered some to Rafe, but he demurred with a slight wave. “Do you think he’ll go back to his career, after?” he asked.
I shrugged. “I don’t know. At the beginning they said they’d welcome him back, but I think we all expect that was just a pleasantry. I’m… I’m not sure if he could handle it, now.”
We rode in silence for a few more minutes before he spoke again. “I’m not sure he’ll approve,” he said with subtle defeat. “Especially if he goes back to work.”
“He doesn’t get a say,” I replied. I reached across the seats and took his hand in mine. I smiled as brightly as I could in reassurance. “I’ve made my choice. This is what I want, for myself. For us. He can object if he wants, but what’s the worst that happens? It’s not like we can be further apart, not after what’s happened.”
It was several days into the Dry Season before the panic really set in. The original settlers had always known it was a one-way trip out here- four hundred years was a long time in stasis, and there was never a guarantee the planet would provide a sufficient fuel source to power the generation ship’s massive thrust engines back up. So like seeds in the wind humanity scattered itself across the stars, secure in the knowledge that the Network Relays would prevent them from ever being truly alone. Mankind might diverge physically and spacially; over time genetics and environmental factors would certainly breed out several new homo subspecies. But with the Network we could at least stay connected enough to share our stories, our art, our discoveries, and what else has humanity ever been but that?
The governor made an address and appealed for calm. New Caledonia had been self-sustaining since the beginning, she reminded everyone. They’d be fine. It was always a known possibility that this might happen, and the best everyone could do was to go on with their lives. The Network would come back, or it wouldn’t; they’d keep trying to re-establish communication.
The rumors started swirling immediately. The panel show ratings skyrocketed. We watched some of the footage in school, when I was younger; one talking head insisted it could be an alien threat, splitting us up before some pending invasion. There’s never been any sign of extraterrestrial intelligence even exists, let alone in competition for colonization, the other shouted. A third argued it was a sign from God, that humanity had outreached its grasp.
A popular conspiracy stream posited that maybe it was just New Caledonia. What if everyone else’s Network connection still works, and they’re cutting us out? The opposition party saw an opportunity and ran with it- what if the government shut down the link? On purpose! What if this was all a ploy to consolidate power and rule the planet as an oligarchy? The riots lasted three days, with violence and looting in the city streets before cooler heads prevailed. The government stayed in tact, and the opposition leaders were purged for fomenting insurrection. And thus was born the New Caledonian hermit kingdom.
“I don’t think I’d even want it to come back, at this point,” I groused. “Not after all of this.”
“How can you say that?” Rafe asked, incredulous. “You’re not the least bit curious?”
I thought for a moment. “Curious, yeah, I guess. But I don’t know that it would change all that much. It’s been so long. What if it comes back and it’s just… too different?”
“Yeah but think of what we might be missing out on,” he argued. “It might have helped with The Rot. It might have…”
“Don’t,” I warned, feeling the threat of tears welling my eyes.
For one-hundred fifty-nine orbits we’d tended our flocks and tilled our soils alone. Without a broader knowledge base, technological progress slowed. In CSY 204 a plague came, some meta-organic compound released from a pit mine dug too deep. The Rot claimed thirteen percent of the population before we could quarantine it out. When I was nine they finally found a way to inoculate against it. I remembered wincing at the shot as my father looked on, relief evident in his face that I’d be spared the fate that had claimed so many lives, including my mothers.
Maybe Rafe was right; maybe someone out beyond the stars might have helped us avoid that tragedy. And maybe someone here might know or do something that could save lives elsewhere. But in the years since the Network went down, we’d persevered, raised generations on our own. And inevitably just like Rafael they would stare up at the night sky with the same wonder as those before. And then they’d also ask about the abandoned broadcast center in the empty valley beyond the outskirts of the main settlement, grown over with the local moss-analogue from years of disuse.
The truck crested a small hill, the tracks struggling for purchase in the mud as they pulled the vehicle over the incline, and we looked down into the valley where that broadcast center sat. Every two years an adult was selected by random lot to man the station, in the increasingly unlikely event communication with the Network was re-established. The government called it “The Receiver” in an effort to present it as some important position, but everyone knew it was a joke. It came with no real benefits, just a small stipend and the obligation of a community. We all prayed at the Harvest Festival that our number would not be drawn from the bowl.
My father was a proud man, an engineer who helped manage the settlement’s geothermal power station. His luck had run out eight-hundred sixty-three days ago. He swore up and down that the lottery was rigged; that the government thought him being a technical expert instead of a field-hand, that the fact that his wife was gone and his children all grown, made him expendable. He might have been right, but that didn’t absolve him the responsibility. So he’d resigned himself, and us with him, to the doldrums of minding an interface that may never come back online.
He read a book a day, or at least he claimed, and while the library did have a fair amount of humanity’s literary efforts prior to the cutoff, their plots and concerns were divorced from life here on the frontier. He took up drinking, inevitably, as did everyone else assigned to the posting. What they don’t tell you when your name is pulled from the bowl is that the sacrifice is not yours alone- the burden is your family’s to bear. My brother’s and I took turns minding him, bringing him food and checking on his mental well-being but they all had families of their own now, and I was desperate to start mine too. We were all ready to move on, and I hoped by bringing Rafael with me he could see that I was serious about starting our life together.
We pulled up outside the comms center and dismounted from the truck.
“Hang on a second,” Rafe said. “I want to talk to him.”
I looked at him quizzically.
“Just… let me do this, okay?”
I smiled and kissed his cheek gently. He went inside while I unloaded a tote filled with fresh fruits and a sandwich I’d laced with some amphetamines to help keep him lucid. The interior of the building was dark; the lights hard burned out several months ago and no one from the government could be bothered to maintain the place on any expedited time scale. I brushed some of the local vines from the threshold of the entryway as I entered. “Dad? It’s Shan. I brought some food.”
As I passed from the mottled grey sunlight outside to the dark interior I could make out blurry figures backlit by the eerie glow of his reading lamp.. They were both standing, which was odd. Dad was usually in the chair when I visited, most of the time asleep.
Rafe emerged suddenly from the shadows and grabbed me by the shoulders. “Shan. Stop.”
“What is it?” I asked, taken aback. “Is everything okay?”
“It’s… here. Let’s go outside.” He pulled me gently but forcefully toward the door.
“What the fuck, Rafe, stop it. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“It’s your dad. He…”
I shoved Rafael out of the way and stepped forward into the comm station. My father came into clearer focus, and I could tell immediately something wasn’t right. I came closer and dropped the basket to the floor in shock. His body hung limply, his feet swaying gently five centimeters from the floor. A length of electrical cord, half-stripped from the wall behind him, was wound tightly around his neck. I grabbed his feet and lifted, crying. “No no no no no, dad, fuck.” I pushed and contorted his body, trying to free him but to no avail. Tears were streaming down my face now, hot and wet.
I pulled a short table across the concrete floor and climbed up onto it, my vision blurred with anger and fear and sobs. I yanked at the cable, trying to unwind it, to free his body. I pulled and wrenched and screamed in desperation, banging on the overhead truss that supported it until I nearly broke my hand. I collapsed onto him, my hands around his shoulders, my face against his chest. His skin was cold and pallid. I was too late to save him.
“Shan.” Rafael stood in the entryway to the station. He offered his hand I took it gingerly, climbing down from the table and following him outside. He pulled me in close as I wailed. “I’m so sorry. I don’t…”
I pulled Rafe to the ground and cried for another few minutes, my chest heaving with agony. “It’s not your fault,” I whispered finally.
“It’s not yours either. You did the best you could.”
“I know.” I pulled the sleeve of my jumper up over my hand and wiped my eyes. “I think a part of me knew it would always end like this. It has so many times before. In a way it might be… I don’t know. Better? I’d always worried about what he would be like after.”
I gulped in air as my breathing stabilized. “Come help me get him down?”
“Sure,” he said, mustering a weak smile.
We went back into the station and looked upon him once more. He looked frail, fragile in a way he hadn’t before. Being alone this long, it just did things to a person. Rafael grabbed his feet as I climbed back up on the table. With Rafe bracing his weight I was able to loosen the taught cable and slip it free, and we lowered the body gently down to the table. He went out to the truck to get a bag to cover my father, and I stood silent vigil, until in the quiet I heard a strange humming noise from across the room. I turned and saw that the Network terminal screen was activated. “That’s… weird.”
I walked across and stood in front of the terminal, suddenly alive with activity. Rafe entered back in with the bag. “What’s that?”
“I don’t know. It’s not usually… on.” I leaned in close. “It’s displaying something.”
A line of dots and dashed appeared on the interface. “I… I think it’s old morse code. Dad had to learn it. I helped him practice.”
“What’s it say?” he asked, a sudden dread in his voice I didn’t recognize. I could feel my stomach welling up in anxiety as well.
“It says.... HELP.”

Reflecting Light
Chapter One
Chapter Ten:
The rebellion base was huge.  Remus had not expected anything so massive to be the main force fighting against his former home.  He was a little surprised they weren’t more of a talked about threat.  Maybe The Light just wanted them all to think there weren’t a lot of people against them, when that was clearly the opposite of the case.
Janus was bringing them in to dock, and Virgil was standing up next to him as the rest of the crew was working down on the deck to help with that process.  Remus got another pass this time due to the child sitting on his shoulders to get a better view of what they were approaching.  Virgil and Janus both seemed amused at Remus and Thomas’ awe.
“Your home is amazing!” Thomas called, turning quickly to Virgil and Janus.
“Woah, careful kid, I don’t want to drop you,” Remus called, reaching up to steady him.
“Sorry!” Thomas called down.  “But isn’t it cool?”
“It’s very cool,” Remus agreed with a smile.  “I like the garden.”
There was in fact a huge garden out in front of the base, complete with fruit trees, long lines of crops, and some flowers that seemed to be planted either for tea or for beauty’s sake.  Remus had never seen anything like that in his home growing up.
“Yeah, it can sustain the whole base,” Virgil said.  “This isn’t all, by the way, there’s more garden’s around back.  Just the part up here would hardly sustain everyone in the rebellion and all the towns.  Though Janus and I used the garden more for the climbing trees when we were kids.”
Thomas gasped in excitement.  “Can I climb the trees?”
“As long as someone is there with you,” Janus said with a smile.
“Okay, I pick Remus!”
“Someone who will make sure you’re safe instead of deciding to climb the trees with you,” Janus amended.
“Rude,” Remus said, shooting not at all serious glare at Janus.  “I will have you know this child’s safety is my second highest priority.”
“Which is right after?”
“Having fun.”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
Thomas giggled and leaned over so he could see Remus’ face.  “I like having fun too.  That’s why you’re my favorite.”
“Hey, I’m wounded,” Janus exclaimed, as Virgil pressed a hand to his chest with a similar spirit involved.
Thomas laughed again.  “Too bad, Remus is my favorite!” he called, sticking his tongue out towards Janus and Virgil.
Virgil turned to Remus, shaking his head.  “We bring you aboard our ship, we house you, feed you, care for you, and you betray us.”
“You should have seen it coming,” Remus said, reaching up to high five Thomas, who gladly did so.  “I have not known any children since I was one myself, but I can say for a fact that they all love me.”
Virgil sighed and shook his head.  “They probably will.  It’s your crazy uncle energy.”
“Crazy uncle Remus!” Thomas called, wrapping his arms around Remus’ head, and coincidentally over his eyes, blocking Remus’ view.
“I’ve gone blind,” Remus said.
“You will never see again!” Thomas proclaimed loudly.
“Well, that’s a real shame,” Janus said casually.  “I guess he can’t supervise your tree climbing then.”
“Okay, wait, he can see again!” Thomas called, and the hands were suddenly gone from Remus’ eyes.  It was good timing too, as the ship was landing at that moment.
They’d landed alongside many other ships, and over to the side, a large set of double doors had opened and out of it walked an older man wearing a sweater vest and a pair of nice pants, along with glasses that were revealed to be a little crooked on his face as he approached.
“Welcome home, everyone!” he called as he boarded the ship.  Everyone down below smiled and waved along with friendly chatter, and Remus immediately got the impression that the man, who could only be Janus and Virgil’s father, was well liked.
He came up towards the top of the deck last, and smiled immediately at Remus and Thomas.
“Janus, Virgil, did you pick up a couple of extra people on this trip?” he asked.  Remus would have greatly disliked that question, and he figured Thomas would have too, if not for the large smile and the easygoing tone it was asked with.
“Uh, kinda, yeah,” Virgil said, rubbing the back of his neck.  “This is Remus, he snuck on as a stowaway and we just kinda… kept him.  And Thomas came from the orphanage last stop, we’re actually gonna have to talk about him.”
Now Thomas seemed uncomfortable, and ducked down behind Remus’ head.
“Hey, it’s okay, kid,” Remus said, reaching up to give Thomas a hand to squeeze.
“Oh yeah, nothing bad, I promise,” Virgil reassured.
“How could I ever think anything bad about someone as adorable as yourself, anyway?  I’m Emile,” Emile said, walking forward and holding out a hand, which Thomas tentatively shook.  “It’s lovely to meet you.  And you as well, Remus.”
“Hey,” Remus said, giving a mini-salute.  “Sorry I snuck onto your son’s ship, but I can’t promise I won’t do it again.”
Emile laughed.  “Honest, I like that,” he said, and Remus winced inwardly.  If he was going to describe himself, he had far too many secrets to count ‘honest’ as one of the words he’d use.  “We’re always happy to welcome new people, whether they’re looking to help, or just need a place to stay.”
“Dad,” Janus said, rolling his eyes.  “You don’t need to give them the slogan.”
“It’s a true slogan,” Emile said, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow at Janus.  “I can’t ask everyone who comes here to be comfortable with fighting The Light, some just got away from situations that would leave them very uncomfortable with doing so.”
Remus blinked, taking a minute to try and absorb that idea.  Back at The Light, if he ever admitted to being uncomfortable with anything, he was told to suck it up, smacked, or smacked and told to suck it up.  But he doubted that with what Emile just said that would be his main course of action.  That meant he might not have to fight Roman.  Something in Remus’ chest that had been tense since he’d run from The Light finally started to loosen.
“Yeah, yeah,” Virgil said, crossing his arms and leaning back against the railway over the main deck.  “But anyway, we’re not staying long.  I mean, Thomas and Remus can stay if they want to,” he said, although Remus could already tell he didn’t seem happy about the idea.  “But we only came because we ran out of food.  We have a few more stops to make.”
“Alright,” Emile said, although he didn’t look very happy about that either.  “But you’re staying the night, you hear?”
“Alright,” Virgil said, in the tone of voice he used when he was pretending to be very annoyed.  He turned to Remus and Thomas a second later.  “Do you guys want a tour?”
“Oh!  Oh, yes please!” Thomas called happily.  “I wanna see where you and Janus grew up!”
“Well, unfortunately,” Emile said.  “The two of them have to get the food situation handled for the rest of your trip.  But I can do that while they’re busy.”
“What?  Dad!” Virgil exclaimed.
“You can join when you’re done,” Emile said with an amused smile.
Neither Janus or Virgil looked happy about this development, but they didn’t complain as Remus and Thomas followed Emile down to the deck and off the ship.  Thomas waved to everyone as they went, who all smiled as they waved back.  Thomas had pretty quickly become everyone’s favorite person on board.  The kid lit up the space around him.
“So you saw the garden as you came in,” Emile said as they walked past the garden to the doors.  He pulled them open, and revealed a long hallway with numerous doors and a few people milling about.
“Hey Remus, let me down!” Thomas called.  Remus reached up and picked Thomas up off his shoulders, then set him down on the ground, holding on to his hand so he could be sure Thomas wouldn’t run off to talk to someone and get lost in this giant base they’d never been in before.
Thomas waved at quite a few people as they passed, and everyone once again waved back with a smile.  Emile stepped up to Remus’ other side as they walked.  “Well he seems to make friends easily, doesn’t he?” he asked.
Remus smiled a little himself and nodded.  “It’s very offensive to people like me, who cannot make friends to save their life.”
Emile laughed.  “Oh, I don’t know,” he said with a smile.  “You seem to have won over both of my sons.”
“That was different, I impressed them by sneaking onto their ship.  I intimidated them into friendship.”
“Ah, yes, you’re very intimidating,” Emile said, with an amused look that meant he definitely didn’t believe that in the slightest.  Remus was going to have to change that, but that could happen after they finished their trip.
They made their way down the long hallway as Emile introduced them to a couple of people, and turned right at the end, heading down a second hallway with significantly more people there.  They headed down that way a little as Emile showed them the cafeteria, which was much smaller than the cafeteria from The Light, but there were apparently multiple throughout the base, so that made more sense.  The cafeteria was pretty full at the moment, as it apparently usually was, and quite a few people recognized Emile as they walked through it, waving to him and then introducing themselves to Thomas and Remus.
They headed out the other side of the cafeteria into what Emile said were sleeping quarters.  Most rooms were pretty small due to the sheer number of people that were there, but unlike Remus and Roman’s room as a kid, most were decorated, and quite a few themes spilled out into the hallway, making the whole stretch a mish-mash of colors and decorations of all different kinds, many of which shouldn’t have worked together but somehow did, like the room decorated with flowers and bees right next to the one covered in bats and pumpkins.
They headed down to a couple of empty rooms at the end of the hallway, where Emile said they could have free reign to pick one out, as even if they were going to be following Janus and Virgil on trips they would likely spend a fair amount of time here.  Thomas pulled away from Remus’ hand and ran off to look in several rooms as Remus hung back a bit with Emile.
He turned to look back down the hallway again, taking in this place that he never thought he would see.  His life had changed more than slightly since he’d met Janus and Virgil.  He couldn’t be sure if he’d like it here more than back home.  The idea that no one would hurt him on purpose was… nice, though Remus still wasn’t sure how much he could trust it yet.  And he wasn’t sure how easily he could stomach the idea of fighting against Logan, Patton, and Roman, or even just staying with people who did.
He hadn’t been sure what to think about them in everything that had happened lately.  If what Virgil had said about such treatment being undeserved was true, Remus didn’t want to think about the possibility that without him there, they’d move on to someone else.  What if Roman got hurt because he’d left?  Remus wasn’t sure how he’d live with himself.
“Are you alright?” Emile asked suddenly.
Remus started and turned back to face him.  “Huh?”
“You looked bothered for a second there.  Are you alright?”
Remus swallowed.  “Fine.  I’m just… thinking.”  He turned back to face Thomas, who was still running between rooms, and tried to make a massive decision in a couple seconds.  Unsurprisingly, he didn’t get very far.
“Are you worried about Thomas?” Emile asked.  “I got the impression from Virgil introducing him that he was in trouble.  That’s the tone he always uses when he’s worried about someone.”
Remus winced.  “You should probably ask him and Janus about that.  I’m not so sure I’m… qualified to tell you.”
“Oh?” Emile asked, sounding curious.  “Why do you think that?”
Remus hesitated again and sighed.  “Thomas came from the orphanage at the last stop we made.  Virgil and I found out that the person who runs the place was hurting him, which Virgil said was super not okay.”
“Well I would hope that’s what he’d say,” Emile said, crossing his arms as his look turned more curious.  “But why exactly would you not be qualified to tell me that?”
Ah, he was running up against that giant decision again.  “…How do you feel about Light soldiers?” he blurted out suddenly.
Emile gave a small knowing nod, and Remus was definitely fucked, and not even in the good way.  “I don’t think I could tell you,” he said.  “I haven’t to my knowledge ever met a Light soldier, so I’m not sure what their life and experiences have been like.  If I happened to meet one, I can promise you I would hear them out before I made a decision.”
Remus didn’t say anything to that.  He waited long enough that Thomas stuck his head out of the room he was currently in.  “I like this one!” he called.  “Remus, you can take the one next to it, okay?”
“You got it, kid!” Remus called with a mini-salute.  Thomas nodded like that was acceptable and then disappeared back into the room.  Remus was quiet for another moment.  Finally, he turned to face Emile.
“I don’t know how I can trust you,” he said finally.
“I don’t know why I would ask you to,” Emile replied.  “Although I do have to tell you that if I get any kind of sense that you might hurt my sons, I’m not going to trust you.”
Remus didn’t say anything again.  He wasn’t sure what to say, but he also very much did not like the silence.
“Hypothetically,” he started.  “Let’s say that there was a soldier from The Light who might have gone through something kinda similar to Thomas.”
Emile nodded.  “Alright.”
“And he ran away and ended up on a random ship that completely accidentally was led by the sons of the head of the resistance.  And it really was accidental.  This soldier did not at all intend to make that ship the one he picked.  He just… wanted out.”
“Duly noted.”
“But he didn’t really think there was anything wrong with the way he was treated,” Remus muttered, looking away.  “Not until he came across Thomas and realized that wasn’t okay either.  And then he started questioning everything a little bit.  He was never really sure if The Light as a whole was something he agreed with or not, and by that point he was already very close with two leading members of the resistance anyway, and he’s pretty sure he’s not going to betray any of them.  He’s definitely not going to go back to The Light.  Would this soldier have to worry about getting killed or made a prisoner if he was found out?”
Emile smiled reassuringly.  “No, he wouldn’t,” he said.  “And I sincerely hope this hypothetical soldier can one day come to realize that the way he was treated was not okay.”
Remus wasn’t entirely sure what to say to that, just crossed his arms and looked back towards the room Thomas was still in.
He was about to head towards it when Emile spoke up again.  “Have you thought about telling Janus and Virgil about this?”
Alarm bells immediately went off in Remus’ head.  “What?” he asked, turning back to Emile.  “But— but Virgil was already pissed when he found out what happened with Thomas, if I tell them about my past they’ll hate me!  And I don’t want them to do that!”
To Remus’ surprise, Emile just laughed.  “What makes you so sure they’ll hate you?”
“What— because they—”
Remus,” Emile interrupted, shaking his head.  “I raised them better than that.”
Remus blinked, and looked down slightly as he processed the statement.  “Oh.”  He looked down.  “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
Remus thought about that another second.  “Okay,” he said finally.  “I’ll think about it.”
“Hey!”
Both Remus and Emile glanced over to see Thomas in the doorway of the room he’d picked again.  “Are you two gonna come look at my new room or what?”
“Sorry about that, Thomas,” Emile said, as they both started over.  “We were just talking.  So you like this room, huh?”
Remus didn’t end up telling Janus or Virgil that night.  They ate dinner and went to some of Virgil and Janus’ favorite places around the base instead.  Janus spent most of his time in the planning room when he was needed there, and in the library when he wasn’t.  Virgil spent his time similarly, although his free time was spent playing or writing music.  Thomas enjoyed that part very much, although Remus was pretty sure Virgil would be playing different songs if Thomas wasn’t around.
Remus hadn’t given a ton of thought to what he liked to do before, as back home he’d spent most of his time either doing something the others liked doing, or breaking the rules for fun when he thought he could get away with it.  He didn’t mind the idea of writing songs with Virgil.  He might try that sometime, as long as Thomas wasn’t around, because he would definitely be scolded if Thomas heard the kind of songs he’d enjoy writing.
They went to bed fairly early since they had to get up the next morning.  Remus stayed in the room next to Thomas like he’d planned, and slept alright considering everything that was on his mind.
Remus got up when Thomas did the next morning, which was far too early for Remus’ liking, but it’s not like he could do much about it when Thomas ran into the room and threw himself on top of his chest.
“I want breakfast!” Thomas called happily.  “Janus said they’re making pancakes!”
“What the hell is a pancake?” Remus wheezed out, moving Thomas off of his chest and onto the bed next to him.
Apparently he had said something truly horrible, because Thomas gasped like Remus had killed a puppy in front of him.  “How do you not know what a pancake is?!  Did Shane never let you have pancakes?”
“Uh, I don’t think that was unique to me,” Remus said, scratching at the hair on the back of his head.
“Shane didn’t let anyone have pancakes?”
Remus laughed a little.  “That wasn’t up to Shane, kid.  The people in charge picked the food we got to eat.”
“Oh my gosh, they’re horrible too!” Thomas exclaimed.  “You have to come eat all of the pancakes now, come on!”  He grabbed Remus’ hand and pulled them both out of the room and back towards the cafeteria before either of them had even changed out of their pajamas.
Luckily they didn’t seem to be alone in that, as most people in the cafeteria were clearly not dressed yet.  Remus found Jackson and Steven near the door of the room, and headed over to them with Thomas waving as they did so.
“Good morning!” Thomas called happily.
“Morning,” Steven said with a smile.
“You guys, you guys,” Thomas said, tugging on Jackson’s hand.  “Remus said he’s never had pancakes!”
Jackson gave him a look.  “What horrible place did you grow up in?”
“Ask your mom,” Remus replied on instinct.
Jackson stuck his tongue out at him.  “Joke’s on you, I have two dads.”
“Dammit.  How am I supposed to defend against the gays?  I can’t fight my own people, Jackson.”
Jackson laughed.  “Exactly.  You’ve trapped yourself.”
“You’ve trapped me.  It’s your own fault for having two dads.”
“Well now I have a whole ship full of parents, I win!” Thomas called, which made the other three adults there burst out laughing.
“You aren’t wrong, kid,” Remus said, ruffling Thomas’ hair.
They reached the front of the line at that point, and they were each handed a plate of three flat fluffy cake-like things.
Thomas thanked the men serving the pancakes and walked over to a nearby table, which happened to be the one that Virgil and Janus were sitting at with Emile.  Remus, Steven, and Jackson joined a second later.
“G’morning,” Remus said.
“Remus has never eaten pancakes!” Thomas announced to the table.  “Everyone watch him as he takes a bite.”
“Oh great, that’ll be fun,” Remus muttered under his breath.  He shoved a bite in his mouth before anyone could reply to or fully process Thomas’ sentence.
“Yep, it’s good, I don’t know how I’ve gone my whole life without eating this, you all truly live a luxurious life,” Remus said through a mouthful of food.
Virgil snorted.  “Dude, don’t talk with your mouth full, you’re disgusting,”
“Thank you,” Remus said, with his mouth still full.
They were supposed to be leaving after breakfast, but Remus thought that maybe they should call it off when he noticed Janus.  He’d known he wasn’t a morning person, but he didn’t normally have a library of books to stay up in all night.
“Uh, you sure you’re not gonna collapse, Jan?” he asked.
Janus moved his exhausted look over to Remus.  Remus was fairly sure he was trying to glare at him, but he was too tired for it to come across properly, and it really just resulted in Remus starting to laugh.
“Don’t worry, I’m flying the ship today,” Virgil said with a smirk.  “He’s gonna nap for another couple hours when we start flying.”
“Hey, that’s just not fair,” Steven said.  “None of the rest of us get to nap.”
“Talk to me after you can organize the cargo properly, Steven,” Virgil said.
Steven stuck his tongue out and Virgil laughed.
They gathered the food and other cargo they’d need for the rest of their trip onto the ship after breakfast, and everyone started preparing to launch as a couple people came out to wish them goodbye.
Thomas had announced very loudly that he wanted to go with Virgil and Janus again, and there was no way Remus was going to stay here without his new family, so they both planned on saying goodbye to Emile before heading back on board.
Virgil and Janus were talking to him as they walked up.
“And make sure you’re back on time this time around,” Emile said.  “I never see you two enough.”
“We’ll be back on time, don’t worry,” Janus said, giving Emile a quick hug before turning back to the ship.  “Now I’m going back to bed.”
“Enjoy you’re beauty sleep, Princess!” Virgil called.
“I will, thanks so much!”
Virgil shook his head after Janus and laughed a little as he headed for the ship too, calling a goodbye with a comment that he should get ready to fly.  Thomas ran off after him before Emile turned to Remus.
“Remus, remember what we talked about, okay?” Emile said, raising an eyebrow.  “Give it some thought?”
Remus sighed.  “Yeah, yeah,” he said, waving his hand dismissively.  “I’ll think about it.”
“Good.”
Remus waved too as he headed off to the ship and followed Thomas and Virgil up to the wheel.  They took off not long after, with Remus standing next to Thomas who wanted to lean over the side and wave to Emile as they took off.  It was only when the rebellion base was finally out of sight that they both headed over next to Virgil again.
“Alright,” Virgil said.  “We’ll be in the next town by lunch, probably.  We’ve only got a couple more places to stop at and then we’re going straight back home.  We’ve got some strategizing to do.  I think we’re actually going to make a strike somewhere soon.  You should know the area, Remus, it’s close to where we picked you up.”
Remus stilled.  Okay.  Well that made his decision for him.  “Virgil, I have to tell you guys something.  Can I talk to you and Janus after we make the drop off today?”
Virgil looked curiously at him.  “Sure.  Is everything okay?”
“It’s fine.  Just… stuff.”
Virgil’s look turned much more concerned.  “You’re sure it can wait?  You’re not in trouble, right?”
Remus shook his head.
Thomas tugged slightly on his arm, and Remus looked down.  “Promise?” he whispered, looking like he had much more of an idea what was going on.
Remus nodded.  “Promise,” he said, both to Thomas and to Virgil.
Virgil nodded a little when he looked back up.  “Okay,” he said.  “Yeah, of course we can talk.”
Remus nodded a little and looked out at the horizon.  The sun was behind a cloud at the moment and they were flying past a flock of birds that Remus let his gaze settle on.
He wasn’t going to fight the people he’d grown up with.  If they were striking the area he came from, that meant he could run into Roman.  And he wasn’t going to fight his brother, no matter what he ended up deciding about The Light.
It would be fine.  Emile said that Virgil and Janus wouldn’t hate him.  And they wouldn’t make him fight the people he grew up with.  He had evidence of that at this point.  It was going to be okay.
They arrived in the town they were heading for right around the time Virgil said they would.  Thomas was told to stay on the ship that time, as they were behind schedule now and couldn’t risk the delight of a child when met with a market to shop in.
They only had to deliver supplies to a couple shops before heading home, so Virgil, Remus, and Janus each took a couple of boxes and headed for one of the shops before they’d meet back at the ship.
Remus delivered to a nice woman who gave him a free meal, which Remus appreciated but which also reminded him of the conversation he was going to have with Janus and Virgil after lunchtime.  Now he had no excuse to put it off.  Dammit lady, don’t you know it’s rude to give people a free lunch?
…That sounded better in his head.
However, fortunately— unfortunately?  Why did this have to happen today— Remus stumbled across an excuse to put off the conversation the second that he stepped out of the shop.
“Remus!”
Remus froze the second he heard the voice, and then it was followed by a rough hand on his arm and Remus couldn’t breathe.  He was spun around to face someone he hadn’t thought he’d ever see again.
“Remus, what the actual hell?” Roman said, pulling Remus closer by the arm, and Remus didn’t like that at all, thanks.  He looked around the street to find it empty.  Of course it was.  Everyone must have left the moment they saw The Light soldier.
“Let go of me,” he growled, shoving Roman backwards.
“Like hell,” Roman snapped, pulling Remus closer, and before Remus could consider whether this was really a good idea he reached out and shoved Roman off of him, then turned to run.
But Roman must have been either quicker or more determined than he realized, because he’d barely made it a couple steps before Roman grabbed his arm again, and yanked him backwards.
“Hey, you’re not leaving until you answer some fucking questions!”
“Let go of me,” Remus said, not liking the way his voice suddenly sounded weaker, and taking a step backwards towards the wall.  He was trying to find it in him to listen to the voice in his head telling him this was Roman, not Shane, and Roman had never once hurt him.
Roman must have picked up on something, though, because he finally let go of Remus’ arm, though he didn’t move far enough away for Remus’ liking.
“Seriously, Remus, what the hell?  Why did you just vanish suddenly?  Are you seriously traveling with the heads of the rebellion?  Don’t tell me you’ve actually turned traitor.”
“Get away from me,” Remus said, moving along the wall.  “You can’t make me go back.  I can’t do it again.”
Roman’s gaze turned confused.  “Can’t do what again?”
“Look I know you don’t think it’s a big deal,” Remus said, squeezing his eyes shut.  “None of us thought it was a big deal, but it’s not— Virgil said it’s not okay.”
“You are traveling with Virgil?” Roman asked, taking a step closer.  “Remus, seriously, what—”
“Get away from me,” Remus snapped, still backing away, but he didn’t make it more than a couple steps before a different, also familiar arm grabbed him, and this one spun him around and slammed him into a nearby wall.
“You little piece of shit,” Shane hissed in his ear.  “You actually did run away like a cowardly traitor.”
“Shane!” Roman called in the background, sounding shocked.  Remus couldn’t imagine why.  What had he thought would happen?
“And here I thought you couldn’t possibly turn out to be any more worthless than I already thought you were,” Shane growled.  “You had to go and prove me wrong.”
Remus pushed weakly against the wall in front of him, but couldn’t really get anywhere with the way his arms were shaking.
“Oh, you’re not getting away again,” Shane snapped, pulling Remus back just enough to have force when he slammed his head into the wall again.  Remus blinked, suddenly dizzy.
“Go on then, you little pest.  Say it.  Tell me what you are.”
Remus braced himself against the wall again, trying to think past the way his chest was constricting.  “No,” he got out.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” Shane growled.  “I’m sure I didn’t hear you properly.  Say it.”
Remus winced and dropped his arms, trying to muster the will to raise them again.  “I— I— I’m—”
The presence at his back was suddenly gone, and by the time Remus spun around Shane was on the ground, a shadow being cast over him by Janus, who lifted up and slammed his foot down on Shane’s head, knocking him out.
“That,” he said.  “Is quite enough.”
Remus turned and leaned against the wall, trying to push himself up.  “Janus—”
Janus turned to face Remus, and his breath caught when he saw the anger on Janus’ face.  He cast half a glance down the street to Roman, then looked back at him, and Remus’ heart fell to his shoes.
“We’re leaving in ten minutes,” Janus said, moving to stand over the guard again.  “Be back on the ship by then.  Virgil, come help me carry this piece of shit.”
Remus looked back towards the end of the street, where Virgil was standing and staring at him, with a face more shocked than angry.  Remus tried to come up with something to say, but after a minute Virgil’s face hardened and he moved forward to help Janus pick up Shane.  They both carried him around the corner and out of sight, and Remus finally managed to push himself off of the wall.
“…Remus?”
Remus turned around, finding Roman looking shocked and a little stricken.  “Remus, what—” he started.
“You—” Remus cut him off.  He breathed in for four seconds and held it, looking back towards the direction Virgil and Janus had taken Shane.  Something in his chest snapped in half.  “You brought him here?”
“What?”
Remus turned back to Roman.  “You were going to bring me back?  With him?”
“Back?  Hang on, Remus—”
Remus spun back around and buried his hands in his hair.  “Holy fuck, Roman,” he choked out.  “Look, I know what things are like back home, but you didn’t even consider what you were doing for a second?”
“Woah, hang on.  You think I—”
“Shut up!” Remus screamed.  People must have heard him, because they started poking their heads back out of houses and around corners.  “Shut up, you—”  He took a deep breath and tried to calm down the thoughts racing through his head.  “They might just kill you if you go home empty handed,” he muttered.
“Remus—”
“Fine, come back to the ship if you want,” Remus said, starting for the edge of the street himself.  “But stay the fuck away from me, do you understand?”
He walked around the corner without looking back.

An Orcs Promise
You lived in a simple and small village in the middle of a valley not too far from a forest of fae, an ocean filled with water dwellers, a stronghold of orcs up in the mountains and a field of centaurs.
Everything was about a days trip away by horse, by foot it was typically two to three days worth of travel. It was worth it however, your village thrived with the amount of trading that was available to them. Fae providing seed and saplings already in growth, the water dwellers granting you safe travel or bountiful baskets of fish, the centaurs allowing land share for your crops and the orcs, they provided live stock and hunting goods as well as strong work hands. Doing things you humans couldn’t really do.
You lived a simple life in your simple village as a woodsmith not exactly what it’s called but you liked the title. No you couldn’t do blacksmithing it just didn’t suit you unlike it did your father and gardening/crop tending didn’t feel right like it did for your mother. So you turned to wood, of course you helped your parents but you just preferred to stick to your own, like carving or maybe the occasional building and repairing. Because of your skills you were often called ‘too manly’ and your parents were told “good luck marrying you off” however they didn’t want to do that, you’re too helpful around the shops and farm.
Your mother is a fae and your father is a human giving you some funny features and hair. Your eyes seemed like they could shift colour and you had magic freckles that disappeared with the sun. Long and wild hair that couldn’t be tamed. Your mother always made sure to call you beautiful and your father always made sure to teach you how to throw a punch. But enough of all this back story let’s talk about how three of your favourite orcs are battling in your families shop.
The twins and their older sister going full throttle displaying their strength wits and ability to strategize. It had started off as any other Saturday you were in your own shop your mother in the fields and your father in his shop. You were working on a carving to trade with one of the centaurs for a spot on their bountiful fields to grow a few trees for your upcoming project. A place of your own. You were ready to move out and start new, of course you didn’t want to leave your parents but they’ve been leaving a few hints here and there. They were ready to let you go and fly from the nest. Cheesy as that sounds that’s just how your parents are.
Heavily lost in your work until a soft moss green hand lifted your chin to face her. Ellera the eldest of the three Thundered, you always giggled at their last name but it made sense they sounded like a thunder storm when they all came roaming around.
Your face went bright red as you jumped from surprise. “Oh Ellera!!!! It’s good to see you, sorry I just got lost in my own world again.. what can I help you with?” Your voice was soft as you set your things down and put your full attention onto the orcess in front of you.
“Well my lamb you could start by getting me mother some of those boards for hackin as well as rod for the seas “ Her voice was strong and full of power with a heavy accent but it always held some softness just for you. Smiling brightly as you grabbed a few different types of cutting boards and chopping blocks for Ellera to pick from. Lastly was your prized fishing rod, carved from the finest tree you ever saw. Your best handy work.
“Take your pick! The thicker the block the more force it can handle. And this is the best of the best in my shop, just for you.” Smiling so sweet you would cause a cavity as you watched her face grow a darker shade of green. It was always your own personal mission to make Ellera blush you couldn’t help it. She was just perfect no matter what she did or how she did it.
“So you make these boards like yourself mm ??? The thicker the more you can handle~” Waltzing up beside Ellera was the older of the twins Oridan the flirtatious goof. Now it was your turn once more to blush bright in the face. Ellera on the other hand scoffed as she smacked him upside the head.
“Hasn’t mother taught ya manners you ass.” Ellera rolled her eyes but was her brother wrong? Lastly to join your conversation Killian the youngest of the family. As well as the smallest but compared to you he was still a giant. They all had tree trunk thighs, gorgeous muscles, beautifully braided and decorated hair and ears. Tribal tattoos that littered every inch of their body you wished to explore. Now now reel those thoughts back in.. “as you were saying lamb which is best for meat and which for vegetables “
Drawing you back from your thoughts you shook your head. “This one has thicker boards and the grain is going this way meaning it’ll absorb the force. Better for meats and such. This one is thinner with grain this way meaning it’s better for slicing and all” you could talk about this stuff for hours but you didn’t want to bore the siblings.
“Then we’ll get them” Ellera spoke so kindly as she took the boards under her arm and into her satchel. You knew the rest of their family would prefer to pay as one rather than separately and possibly underpaying your family. No overpaying wasn’t their issue they were happy to do so, it was possibly underpaying you that they worried about. Your family always took good care of them when they needed, the first of your village to show them such kindness and hospitality.
“Oh Ellera here I have something for you.” Gingerly taking the orcesses hand in your own you lead her to your little safe. Digging around the box for a moment you found what you were searching for. A beautiful hand crafted obsidian necklace. You knew orcish traditions you knew this was you asking Ellera to court you. “It’s obsidian, it’s too heavy of a stone for me so I thought you would like it. W-Will you accept..”
“You know what this means correct??” You were no dummy of course you knew, so you gently nodded your head. “Of course l will it’s beautiful thank you my lamb.” Ellera smiled brightly and turned to her brothers with an all knowing smirk. “ suck it losers I have won!!!!! My dearest little lamb had chosen me. Now butt out of the shop before I take both of your heads and put them on a platter. “ You couldn’t help but snicker a bit at her words, it’s just how she was with those two.
Now this leads us to where we are at the moment. Ellera taking off her satchel and her necklace before brawling it out with her brothers. You hadn’t known the twins also had an eye for you, looking around your shop there stand their parents with your own. All of them had the what the hell happened and is going on look. You could only smile sheepishly as you weaved your way through the mass of limbs colliding with one another. “So I’ve asked Ellera if we could court per orcish tradition and I didn’t even know the twins had a thing for me. And now their battling it out because the twins think Ellera had an unfair advantage and can you please stop them before they break anything in my shop??? Oh and Mrs. Thundered I had Ellera pick out some lovely cutting boards and butchers blocks for you !! “ The orc parents laughed and shook their heads at your little story. They can deal with all this after they save your shop from being ripped apart.
Mrs. Thundered grabbed Ellera with most of her might and tossed the girl over her shoulder. While Mr. Thundered grabbed the two boys and held them apart like bickering cats. “Now before you break this lovely shop why the hell are you all fighting. I swear we raised you better than to fight inside. “ Mrs. Thundered spoke sternly as she glared at all of her children. Collecting all the items they have picked out you rang them up while the parents took their kids outside and had a much different conversation than in the shop.
It took maybe twenty minutes of waiting before the orc family came back inside. The boys a flustered mess and Ellera grumpily huffing and sighing as her mother held her back. “Boys. Go. “ you laughed a bit at how large they were compared to you but yet in this moment they seemed so small. “Boys.” Her tone was much sterner maybe the sternest you had ever heard. Tilting your head up to the twins you smiled softly .
“W-Will you accept our own courting gifts.. and by the end of the courting months you can pick who wish to be with the most. “ it was Killian who spoke which surprised you he was always so shy and cautious of his words.
“I mean it’ll obviously be me.. I don’t even know why we have to wait months! Right sugar ???” Oridan made you laugh as he nudged his brother aside to hand you his gift. A simply terribly carved handle but with a beautiful dagger blade attached. You had no idea how he even managed to do such small carvings in the metal. “I know the handle isn’t pretty but I thought maybe you would help me with that.. “ now all of a sudden his loud and boisterous self was no more than just like his twin.
Killian however seemed a bit more confident with his gift a beautiful fur lined cloak. You had no idea he could sew.. “Boys these are both beautiful in their own ways.. but Ellera..?? How would it work what if I can’t choose ? What will happen then ? A fight to the death? “ Ellera nodded and pulled out her own gift she didn’t need to give it to you but she wanted to. Just to out shine her brothers once more. It was a crystal vase with preserved flowers encased inside.
“It wouldn’t be to the death just to where the other two can no longer rise to their feet. Any other orc yes to the death. “ Oridan spoke up once more, you loved all of them but you never thought the twins were interest in you Oridan maybe but, that was just you thinking he was joking. “So please.. will you accept?”
“I will, all three of us can court each other. Until then you need to work on your wood skills how did you not loose a finger and Krillian this is gorgeous I didn’t know you could sew like this. Ellera of course this is gorgeous but what if it breaks ?? What if I shatter it ???? “ The orcess simply laughed and shook her head.
“It can’t shatter I promise hun how can I promise such a thing, well me and my big man hands made it. “ Ellera smiled willy her dark oak brown eyes shining gleefully as she started down to you. Puffing out her chest showing off her muscles it was her final display of strength before her mother dragged her off to the horses.
“I look forward to this.. I haven’t always been able to sew just with the changing seasons I thought you would get cold so I took up the skill for you. “ That immediately made your heart melt. Killian took up a whole hobby just to be able to provide for you. With his Killian getting the last day of the three siblings they all went off on their way home.
Oh dear, how could you choose..

Soth: "Oh, gods, why am I on fire and why is Immigrant Song playing?" Jonni: "Take a guess." Hazlik: "Okay, so its a partridge, stuffed inside a chicken, stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey, and the whole thing is fried on a stick. Congratulations, that's the most horrible thing I have ever seen, and I once crossbred an elephant and an owl." "I give him the 'itis, and we run like we stole something." OOC: ...weirdly Curse of Strahd has stats for Strahd zombies but not Strahd Skeletons. Or Strahd's skeletal Steed. Strahd once went to a branding seminar hosted by Bane and it changed his life.
"Are we on a high enough floor that if I throw him through the window he'll be killed by the fall?" "Oh, but when I say stuff like that it’s all 'Jonni, murder is wrong.'" "When they say pick your battles they don't mean to pick all of them. That's too many battles Jonni. Put some back." OOC: He's technically already got a symbiote. OOC: They can get married. Gorbash: "I'm increasing the rent." Venom: "Can I keep the pool table?" Gorbash: "I'm not a monster." Giant Brain: "Jonni… I have summoned you here for… WHY AM I ALREADY ON FIRE! PUT ME OUT! PUT ME OUT!"
"Hello We're the party-crashers. This is Jonni, she's here to steal your women and burn your shit down. That's Nyx, she's going to repatriate certain items from the premise. Marshal over there, is here to studiously ignore our shenanigans. This is the New Guy. He seems pretty chill. I'm Gorbash... and I have been distracting you."
"Will you walk into my parlour?" said a spider to a fly. Jonni: "Hold up. Trying to sex a spider." Nyx: (throws her hands up) And then Jonni wakes up with a spider venom hangover webbed to a wall waiting to be eaten. Jonni: "Eh, I’ve had worse one night stands. I’m not a fucking blueberry." OOC 1: Hey, where does your weed elf grow [her] crops? OOC 2: She probably just grows them in the room she hasn’t paid rent on. OOC 3: Because I was also considering a circle of spores druid tortle. OOC 2: We could be partners! We could turn this into road to el dorado staring Cheech and Chong. OOC: Wait, I just realized five people are hanging out in a pirate bar, and none of us are rogues. We are gonna need someone to get thieves tools. OOC: We have a barbarian with a big stick.
"Are we Foxhound now? Blunderbuss Octopus." OOC1: You want to put the stoner in charge of food. OOC2: Eyup. OOC1: I see no way this can go wrong! OOC3: We need the four basic food groups. Beans, Bacon, Whisky, and Lard. “We pray to Almighty Darkseid! Give us a sign! Thumbs up, for the triumph of the human spirit! Thumbs down to begin the everlasting reign of darkness!” “Where did you find this guy?” “Me? I thought you hired him.” OOC: Yup, nature, arcana, history, investigation and religon at +6. MJ got baked and watched the Discovery Orb a lot. Tordek: "But we have a cleric, Jozan, over there." Strahd: *sigh* Snaps fingers, and suddenly one of Strahd's brides sucks Jozan out the window, cue screaming. "Oh look, you suddenly have an opening, how fortunate." Tordek: "We also have a druid...." Vadania: "SHUT UP, TORDEK!" Edmund: "I think the first order of business may be to discuss your Human Resources strategy..." Strahd: "I have a guy for that too."
youtube
"When someone as smart as him talks with himself, it's not crazy...They call it monologing." "I thought it was soliloquy?" "No, soliloquy is when you're talk at someone else when your talking to yourself." "Most people would run from a demon, you run towards it to study it." Professor: "THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING! A FROGHEMOTH, AND RIGHT UP CLOSE, IT WILL BE AMAZING TO SEE THIS PERFECT KILLING MACHINE IN ACTION." OOC: Also note the Professor is Lawful Good, Archie is Chaotic Good, so collectively they balance out to Neutral good. OOC: That's good. "The incinerations will continue until morale improves!" “You never incinerate the women!” “Because I’m fucking them!” “I… was not expecting you to be so honest about that…”
"You got what you wanted....but you lost what you had...." "Yes, I'm familiar with how capitalism works."
OOC: Dragons are like, “That’s Krandor the shiney. He only fucks other dragons. Weirdo.”
Gorbash: "D'awww, so tiny... perfect size... FOR PUNTING!" *boots tiny mind-flayer into the horizon*
"Dracula hasn't been spotted in almost recently. Whats he gonna do, destroy all we know and love like he definitely can?" "... my god you people are too stupid to live." "What are you doing in my house?" Gorbash: "...well Edmund has been reading your books, I've been sorting through your armory, Nyx and Irost has been going through your other shinies, Marshal has been cleaving anything monstrous that gets too close, and Jonni has been lighting things on fire to stave off boredom." Gorbash: "Okay Marshal, Jonni. Rock, paper, scissors over who gets [to kill] the bishop."
Jonni: "Did you really think this would make up for what you did?" Nima: "I… killed everyone you grew up with." Jonni: "Yeah, and I’m still not forgiving you for what you did to Eddie." Nima: "I am missing some key context here…" Nima: "Also I committed identity theft on you by having my new undead army tell everyone you are running the show." Jonni: "Oh, no. You’ve fooled the boar tribe. Who still haven’t figured out shitting in a hole." Nima: "Yeah I noticed that. I ruined two pairs of shoes attacking their camps."

My Everything - Part Seventeen
A Take it Slow Sequel
What happens with Harry and Y/N after he proposes? How will the two navigate the engaged life while also continuing to juggle their jobs, friends, and families? Let’s find out.
Warnings: fluff and angst. TW: mentions of past abuse!
Words: 6.7K
a/n: This part is a little more serious, with some fun things sprinkled in between.
Masterpost
Many things were the same with this pregnancy as they were with Jack. Harry took a picture of you every week to watch your tummy grow, and he also insisted on doing a maternity shoot. You thought it could be even more fun to have Jack involved too. Harry had set up a nice space in your bedroom. You had a robe on and did your hair and makeup nicely. Jack was coloring on the floor sitting next to Buster.
“Ready babe? Drop the robe.” Harry smiles as he finishes getting his setting on the camera just right.
You take a deep breath and let your robe fall. Harry’s eyes grow wide and he clears his throat as he blushes. If Jack wasn’t in the room he probably would have fucked you before taking the pictures.
“How were you able to shave?”
“I didn’t…um…remember when I was with the girls the other day?”
“Yeah.”
“Well…Rachel bought a home wax kit and she waxed me.”
“The three of you…are a little too close.” Harry chuckles.
“Well at least it looks pretty now!”
“It always looks pretty, hairy or not.”
Harry positions you how he looks, getting a nice side profile. He always took really tasteful photos of you. Jack wasn’t paying much attention until Harry took out some paint. You put on a nude bra and underwear set.
“Jack, wanna come be in the pictures with Mummy?”
“Yeah!” He gets up and gives you a hug.
“Alright, I want you to stick your hands in the paint, and press them gently on Mummy’s tummy, yeah?”
“Okay!”
Jack was really excited, he loved paint, and he loved when you and Harry allowed him to be a little messy. Harry lifts him up and helps him press his hands on your stomach, around your belly button. You hold onto Jack so Harry can snap some photos. The hand prints looked really cool, and Harry was able to get a candid shot of you and Jack giggling.
“Were you able to find that crop top for the family photo? I’ll get this on a timer so I can do the paint too.”
“Mhm, let me go put it on.”
You come back out in a black short sleeve crop top and black joggers. Harry dips his hand on the paint and presses them to the sides of where Jack’s hand prints were.
“There, see Jack, it took all of our love to make this baby.”
Jack beams up at his father. Harry scoops him up and they position themselves to take some family photos. You put your hands in the paint and press one hand on Jack’s stomach, and one Harry’s back, making for a very cool shot. Harry had too many tattoos on his stomach for the hand print to be prominent. You get a shot with Buster too, and you all smile as they look them over.
“Pretty, Mumma.” Jack says.
“You think so? I’d say we’re a pretty good looking family.” You look at Harry lovingly. “Thank you so much for convincing me to do this again, it’s so special.”
“Of course, honey.” He kisses your cheek. “You just look so good, it would be a crime not to document it.”
//
Time was going by way too fast. You were due soon, and you were freaking out because it was only the middle of April. Someone would have to take over your classes for the rest of the semester. You were hoping to hold on for a couple more weeks, but Jessica Rose had other plans for you. You were in the middle of one of your lectures when you felt something.
“Oh my god.” You gasp, and squat. The whole class gasps. Your water had broken and it was seeping down your pant legs. “I’m fine, everyone!”
“Did your water just break?!” One of them shouts.
“Yes.” You breathe and reach for your cell phone. “I need, shit, to call my husband.” You press your phone to your ear. “Class dismissed, uh, Kelly, can you let the admin know what’s going on?”
“Sure thing!”
A few students hang back to make sure you’re okay.
“Harry?!”
“Hi! Aren’t yeh teachin’? Do yeh miss me?” He chuckles.
“My water just broke in front of my class.”
“What?!”
“Can you get over here? My go bag is in my trunk already, so you just need to, fucking hell, get here.”
“I’m gonna take a cab, I’ll be there in ten minutes. I’ll snatch Jack from day care, just get to your car.”
“Okay.”
A couple of your students help you outside to your car. Before you know it you see Harry running towards you with Jack in his arms. He grabs you by the back of your neck to kiss you.
“Okay, uh, I’ll get him strapped in, get in the car, babe.” He says excitedly.
Harry speeds to the hospital. Jack got a little frightened once you were inside and getting wheeled away. Harry called your mom and had her come pick him up.
“Where’s Mumma!?” He sobs.
“She’s…gone to pick up baby Jessica, Jack. And Daddy needs to go help her. But you’re really lucky, you get to spend time with Mimi. I need yeh to be a big boy f’me, can yeh do that?”
“I’ll try.” He sniffles.
Harry gives him a kiss and a hug before handing him off to your mom. He sprints down to your hospital room where you were chewing on ice chips.
“Is he alright?”
“Yeah, he’ll be fine. You know how he is when he first leaves us. I think he was just scared from all the commotion. I’m sure your mum will calm him down.” Harry takes your hand and kisses it. “How are you feelin’ this time around?”
“Remember when I told you what it was like when I got my nipples pierced? The first one didn’t hurt because of the adrenaline, but the second one hurt because I knew what to expect?”
“Yeah.”
“Welp.” You burst into tears. “I suddenly remembered what it was like to push a giant head out of my vagina, and I’m probably gonna tear open again, and…” You look up at him. “Tell me again, why I wanted to do this?”
“Because you wanted to have another baby around.” He smooths some hair away from your forehead. “And we really like makin’ babies.”
“We do, we really do.”
“It’s gonna be alright, love. I’ve got way more time off from work this go around, and you have the entire summer.”
“What if Jack doesn’t like her? He used to getting all of the attention. He’s only going to be three next month, he won’t understand.”
“Well, he took a liking to those dolls we gave him. Remember how good and gentle he was with the baby? I think he’s excited. He may not like it all the time, but like everything else he’ll get used to it.”
“I can’t wait for them to drug me up soon. I read that sometimes the second kid can come a lot faster.”
“Let’s hope.” He leans in and kisses your forehead.
//
Thirty-six hours in labor. You had no idea what was going on. Your water had broken, what was the hold up? You were uncomfortable and in pain and you just wanted this baby out.
Dr. Johnson comes in to check on you.
“So…I’d like to talk to you both about a cesarean.”
“You want to cut me open?!” You look at Harry, frightened.
“It’s much less invasive than it used to be, and you’d be in really good hands.”
“I don’t want to have a giant scar across my stomach!”
“You won’t, like I said, it’s not like how it used to be. The recovery time takes a little longer, but your vagina won’t tare open.” She tries to make a joke, but right now you weren’t sure what to say. “It’s up to you, but you’ve been in this hospital for two days.”
“Would I still be able to go in with her?”
“Oh sure! We’ll numb her up, you won’t even feel a thing.”
“What do you wanna do, Y/N?”
“I think I’m ready to meet our daughter.”
“Great, we’ll get everything prepped.”
//
They let you hold Jessica skin to skin, but Harry wasn’t able to until you were back in the actual hospital room. You felt disgusting. They had to give you a bed pan. You never thought you’d miss the mesh underwear so much. You found yourself crying every few minutes from the pain that was creeping into your body, but Harry would call a nurse and she’d give you some medicine.
You breast fed Jessica just as you did Jack. She was gorgeous. Harry couldn’t stop crying either.
“I just love her so much.” He sobbed as he held her close to him.
Eventually you felt strong enough to use the bathroom, and a nurse helped you through it. After another night of rest you told your mom she could bring Jack in to see you.
“Mumma!” He exclaims as he comes into the room. “Missed you!”
“I missed you too.” You say, tiredly.
“What about me?” Harry pouts at him.
“Missed you too, Daddy.”
Harry scoops him up.
“Come on, we gotta wash your hands. How was he, Lynn?”
“Very good, we had a nice few days together.” She comes over and kisses you on the forehead. “A c-section, huh? Had four of them myself, you know?”
“It’s much different now. I need to stay here a couple extra days, but at least it doesn’t burn when I pee.” You laugh.
“Where’s little Jessica?”
“Down at the nursery. A nurse is going to bring her in soon. We were exhausted.”
A nurse comes in shortly and you take your daughter from her.
“Harry, put Jack on the bed with me.” He does as you say. Jack’s eyes grew wide as he looked at the baby in your arms. “Now, Jack, this is much different than your baby doll. You need to be even more gentle, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Meet your baby sister, Jessica Rose.”
You tilt her towards Jack so he can see her face. He gives a gentle stroke on her cheek.
“Baby.” He whispers.
“God, look at them.” Harry blubbers while he takes his phone out. He takes a picture of the three of you.
“Here, let me get one of the four of you.” Your mom says.
Harry picks up Jack and sits on the bed with you. The four of you snuggle up close. It’s a great picture.
“Once you feel up to it, we can get a real portrait done.” He tells you. “What do you think, Jack? Ready to be a big brother?”
“Yeah, she smells good.”
You laugh as you hand Jessica over to your mom.
“That’s that new baby smell, buddy.” Harry says to him.
//
You had to spend a couple days extra in the hospital to make sure you were healed up properly. Harry was a saint. You were too weak to do much other than feed Jessica when you got back home. You didn’t breast feed much. You just pumped and put everything into the fridge. It allowed harry to feed Jessica much easier.
Jack soon discovered he didn’t like the sound of the baby crying. He also didn’t like how much attention the baby got over him, especially from you.
“Put baby down, Mumma.” He would whine.
“I can’t right now, honey, I’m giving her a bath.” You were bathing her in the sink.
“Jack, I think Jessica has the right idea. Let’s go give you a tubby.” Harry says.
“No, I want Mumma.”
“You can’t fit in the sink anymore, Jack.” You giggle. “You’re gonna be three years old very soon.” You pick Jessica up and boop her nose. You wrap her in a towel and hold her close. “I’ll put her down and then we can give him a tubby together.”
“You heard her.” Harry says to his son. “I’ll get the water started.”
“Harry?”
“Yeah?”
“Why don’t you lull her to sleep? I think Jack needs some alone time with me.”
“Alright.” He kisses your cheek and goes into the baby’s room.
“Okay, baby boy, let’s get you clean.”
You and Jack play with his water toys, and then you scrub his head. Just like Harry, he loved the way your nails felt while you washed his hair.
“Daddy and I have a big surprise for your birthday.”
“Really?”
“Mhm, it’s coming in a couple of weeks.”
“What is it?”
“Can’t say.” You smirk.
“No fair.” He pouts.
“Just know, it’s going to make summers even more fun.”
You wrap him in a towel and lift him out. You get Jack in jammies and get him tucked into bed. You read him one of his favorite stories until he falls asleep. You kiss his forehead before leaving his room. You let out a tired sigh after you close his door.
You go down the stairs to see Harry making dinner. Just a simple salad. He hands you a bowl.
“Thanks, honey.” You yawn.
“Sorry he’s been so clingy lately. I try to keep him busy most of the day. Buster helps tire him out, but it’s like the second he sees you…”
“He wants his, Mumma, I get it. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t like spending so much time with you though.”
“I know.” He sighs. “How are you feeling?”
“Much better. The extra rest you gave me was much appreciated.”
“Well, you needed it.” He sets his bowl down and wraps his arms around you. You rest your head on his shoulder.
“I’m tired.” You groan.
“Wanna turn in early?”
“It’s only seven.”
“So? I’m happy to go crawl into bed if you are.” He chuckles.
“Alright, yeah. Oh! We could watch something on TV and just relax.”
“I like the sound of that.”
//
“A pool!” Jack squeals when you let him outside.
You and Harry had saved up for over a year to get an above ground pool built in the back yard. You wanted to give Jack a pool party for his third birthday.
“We’re gonna have a big party here next weekend just for you, honey.”
“Just for me?!”
“That’s right.”
“Thank you, Mumma.” He hugs your legs.
“Go thank Daddy too.”
Jack runs over to Harry who was finishing getting the pool filled. He hugs his legs too.
“When can we go in?” Harry scoops Jack up so he can see into the water.
“Not for another few days. Gotta test it and make sure it’s safe.” Harry comes over to you. You were feeding Jessica. “I picked up a heating pad too, you can lay it across the water to make the water warm, just in case it’s too cold.”
“Good thinking, babe.” You hold your daughter up and pat her back to help her burp. “Jack, would you like Daddy to take you to the store so you can pick out some pool toys and floaties?”
“Yeah! Can we, Daddy?”
“Of course. We can head out soon. We can pick out something Mumma would like too.” He winks at you.
You needed a nap. You were exhausted. Even though Harry was more than willing and able to do the night feedings, you found yourself beating him to it. You bring Jessica up to her room and get her settled into her crib. You crawl onto your bed and close your eyes. Your body was still doing a lot of healing. You had started going for walks on the treadmill in the basement. You wouldn’t be able to go for neighborhood walks with Sarah until June when her school year ended. You’d be back in shape in no time.
You woke up about twenty minutes later to the sound of your phone going off. You wondered if Harry had a question about the pool toys. When you see Dr. Mara’s name pop up, you’re slightly confused. She still prescribed you your medication, but you hadn’t had an actual visit with her in quite some time.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Y/N, it’s Dr. Mara.”
“Hi, yeah, um, is everything okay?”
“Yes, well, there’s an article I saw online today…I think you should see it, but I wanted to call first before just texting it to you.”
“What does it entail?”
“Jake…” Your eyes grow wide. It was a name you hadn’t even thought about in years. “He’s been arrested recently. I know you never came forward with anything, but sometimes…well, sometimes when more people step forward on these things, it helps. Everything is up to you, of course. I’m going to send you the article. Do with the information what you will.”
“Okay, um, thank you for letting me know.”
You hang up and she sends you the article. He had been arrested on domestic violence charges. Apparently he had been divorced, and he had attacked his ex-wife. She was pressing charges, but the article didn’t get into it.
“Oh my god.” You feel tears prick at the back of your eyes. You lose all control and start sobbing.
Jack couldn’t wait to show you the things him and Harry got at the store. He races upstairs to your bedroom.
“Jack, mummy could be sleeping, hold on.” Harry whispers and picks him up. He opens the door to your room quietly. You were sitting on the edge of the bed, shaking, eyes red and puffy. “Y/N?”
“Mumma! We got so many toys.”
“That’s, that’s great, honey.” Your voice was hoarse and just as shaky as your body.
“Um, Jack, could you go color in your room for a bit?”
“But you said we could show Mumma.” He pouts.
“We will, I just need to talk with mummy alone quick.”
He sets Jack down. He grumbles as he leaves the room. Harry sits down next to you. You flinch when he tries to put his hand on you. You hand him your phone to show him the article. He gasps when he reads it.
“How did you even come across this?”
“Dr. Mara called me.” You say quietly. “She said…if I were to come forward…it could help this woman’s case. Get him locked up.” You sigh. “It’s weird, it’s like, I almost forgot I had been through anything.” You start crying again. “If I had just pressed charges back then this poor woman he married wouldn’t be dealing with this.”
“Y/N.” Harry gently places his hand on your back. “It’s okay.”
“I still have everything. I don’t know if the DNA would even still be on there, but I kept everything in a box just in case. I could go to the police station and give my story. I have to help.”
“You’re sure this is something you want to go through? You may end up needing to testify.”
“I made a mistake by not doing this before.” You put your hand on his knee. “We have children now. If something like this ever happened to either of them…I’d, I’d lose my goddamn mind! I can go to the police station this week. I know it’s cutting it close to Jack’s party, but I should do this sooner rather than later.”
“Do you want me to go with you? We could get a babysitter.”
“No, I should go by myself. You stay home with the kids.”
“I’m so sorry this is all being brought back up. Are you gonna be okay?”
“I don’t think I will be until I know that monster is properly put away.”
//
The next morning you rummaged in the basement for the box you had kept the bags of the sheets and dress in. You sighed when you found it. You weren’t sure what it would do, but you were thankful you kept it. Harry kisses you goodbye before you go. You wanted to leave before Jack woke up.
You drive out to the police department that had arrested Jake. You take a deep breath before walking in. You walk up to a woman sitting at a desk. There were a ton of people walking around, and loud phones going off. You shake all of the background noise away.
“May I help you?”
“Um, yes, I…need to report…a few years ago…you recently arrested Jake Robinson, and he raped me a few years ago.” That was the first time you ever actually said something like that out loud.
“Oh my.” The woman says. “You’re not the first person to come in about this. One moment.” She makes a call and a few minutes later a detective come out.
“Hi, I’m Detective Ruiz.” She says to you. “Would you like to come have a chat with me? I’m working the Robinson case.”
You nod and follow her back to her desk.
“These are, um, the sheets…and what I was wearing when it happened.” You place the bags on her desk. “It happened back in 2018, so I don’t know if they’ll be helpful.”
“They definitely will be. We can send everything off to the lab. They’ll be able to tell us what’s on it.”
“The woman up front said I wasn’t the only one to come in…”
“You’re not. We arrested him last week, and three other women came forward.”
“How’s his ex-wife doing?”
“She’s making it through.” She takes a note pad out. “Can you tell me what happened?”
“Of course. We had been on about four dates. He seemed like a really nice guy. We hadn’t been too intimate, mostly just kissing. On our fourth date, I invited him up to my place. We ended up on my bed. I thought we would just get into, um, some heavy petting, but before I knew it my head was being shoved into my pillows and he was just…well, you know. I didn’t feel safe enough to say no. I thought he might do something even more forceful. I certainly didn’t consent to sex. When he left I passed out from the blood on my sheets and the blood between my legs. My best friend, Niall Horan, came and helped me afterwards.”
“Did you happen to take any pictures?”
“No…the only time I used my phone…oh, wait, um…I do have a picture of Jake and I from our date that night. We had gone for a walk and taken a selfie.” You go onto your Instagram and scroll back really far. You weren’t sure why you kept this picture, but right now you were glad you did. “See.” You show her.
“Are you able to send that to me? He may claim he’s never met you before.”
“Of course. I feel terrible. I should have come forward when it happened.”
“All of the other women said the same thing, don’t worry. The others happened before you. It can be hard to talk about these things. Coming to us doesn’t exactly help make it all go away.”
“I just want to do everything I can to help now. I have a soon to be three year old, and an infant to think about.” You think for a moment. “I went to therapy for years. I know there’s doctor patient confidentiality, but I’ll sign whatever waiver that’s needed if you need more information to support the case.”
“Thank you, we really appreciate that. May I ask who you saw?”
“Dr. Pricilla Mara.”
She nods and writes the information down.
“Alright Mrs…?”
“Um, my husband’s last name is Styles, but legally I go by Y/F/N Y/L/N…I’m a PhD as well, that’s why I kept my name.”
“Kept my own name too.” She smirks. “No need to explain that. So, the lab process will take some time. We’ll be in touch, though.”
“Alright.”
“Thank you for coming in. You’re definitely making a big difference.”
//
When you get home you find Harry on the couch with Jessica in the crook of his arm, and Jack nuzzled up close in his other side. He was reading one of his books to them. You giggle slightly and take your phone out to take a picture.
“Mumma!” Jack exclaims and gets up to run over to you. “Where were you?” He pouts.
“I had to run an errand, my doll.” You pick him up and kiss his cheek. “But I’m home now. Can I sit there, Daddy?”
“Sure thing, Mummy.” You sit down and Harry throws his arm around you. He kisses your temple. “Jack really liked the story in this book. I pretended it was about a prince and a princess.”
“Ah, well, let’s keep reading then.”
It was a nice family day. You pushed Jack on the swing outside while Harry took Jessica for a walk in the stroller with Buster. Then he grilled up some food for dinner. Once both kids were down, you told Harry about what happened at the police station.
“So, they’ll call you if they need more from you?”
“Yup.”
“You’re being really brave, I hope you know that.”
“Thanks. You had a nice morning with them?”
“It was great. Jack crawled into bed with me and we had a nice snuggle before I had to get Jessica. She was so good for me too. I made Jack pancakes for breakfast after I fed her. We had a nice chat. He misses his friends at day care, but he said he’s excited that we’ll both be home for a bit.”
“Aw, he’s so sweet. We had fun in the backyard earlier. I like that you’ll be home with me a little longer than last time.”
“Me too. Mum and Gem are excited to fly in for the party.”
“They come Friday, right?”
“Mhm.”
“I can’t wait for them to meet Jessica.” You wrap your arms around his neck, and his hands rest on your waist. “We have a nice life.”
“Wouldn’t trade it for anything else.” He kisses you gently.
“Okay, I’m letting go before you think this is an invitation.” You chuckle.
“What?!” He laughs. “I wasn’t even making a move!”
“I could feel your hands sliding down to my butt, I can read you like a book, Harry. I know your moves.”
“Well, as much as I’d love to get my hands all over you, I know we can’t yet.” He rolls his eyes. “Even though my little friend stayed intact this time.” He wraps his arms back around you and pulls you close.
“Yeah, well, my stomach is still healing up.”
“I’m well aware, angel.” He kisses you again. “Doesn’t mean I can’t kiss you does it?” He mumbles against your lips.
“I suppose that’s okay.”
He leads you over to the couch, and lays you down. He hovers over you and sucks your bottom lip into his mouth. You can’t remember the last time you simply just made out with your husband. After the morning you had this was everything you could have needed. He knew that. He always knew what to do.
He deepens the kiss by licking into your mouth, and you have absolutely no problem with it. Your tongue finds his and you just feel like you’re getting lost in each other like you used to. You’re taken out of your intoxicated state when you hear Jessica cry through the baby monitor. Harry sighs into your neck. He slowly lifts off of you.
“I’ll go check her, why don’t you go take a bath or something. You’ve had a long day.”
“Thanks, yeah, maybe I will.”
You both go upstairs. Harry changes Jessica and rocks her back to sleep. He checks on Jack quick to make sure the baby didn’t wake him. He was sound asleep. Harry goes into the bedroom and sees the bathroom door open a crack, you were just getting into the tub. He opens the door and leans against the frame.
“I’d ask you to join, but I’m still a little self-conscious.” You blush.
“S’alright, can I sit against the tub just to be near you?”
“Of course.”
Harry sits down on the cold tile. You drape your hand over his head and mindlessly play with his hair. Times like these you almost forgot you were a parent. When you’d be able to just sit and talk with Harry about things. He’d be home with you through the end of May and for the month of June. You decided that since Anne and Gemma were coming here, that it would be a good idea to not go to England this summer, and to just make your trip longer in January.
“Are you sure you’re okay with not being able to see your friends?”
“You know that’s not the only reason why we go there right?” He turns slightly to look at you. “I love seeing Louis and all, but we go there to see other family. I go there to get some other work done. Besides, since we’re not going we’re making more money off the flat.” He shrugs. “And traveling with Jack and Jessica right now doesn’t sound all that appealing. It would be a lot. You’re still healing too.”
“I’m just saying, if you wanted to go…”
“You’re crazy if you think I’d use the time off from work that I’m supposed to be here helping to dart off to London.” He takes your hand and kisses it. “I’d never do that.”
“I’m really happy you’re taking so much time off. I appreciate it a lot.”
“And then when I go back I’m only doing half days until you go back to work.”
“Jessica won’t be able to go to daycare until she’s six months, so she’ll need to be with you.”
“That should work fine. Can you believe that Jack only has one more year of daycare until he’s at preschool? Time’s flying.”
“I know.” You sigh. “We should probably start looking at places we want to send him. Sometimes you almost have to book your spot a year in advance.”
“I wish the university had a preschool, we’ve been spoiled.”
“I’m gonna start asking around to see where other people have sent their kids. I don’t want pick up and drop off to be annoying.”
“Well, shouldn’t we look around this area? It would be better for him to meet more of the Milton kids that he’d actually end up going to school with.”
“Good point. I’ll talk to Sarah, she probably knows what preschools are good.” You look at your hands and see they’re getting pruney. “Could you hand me my towel? Think it’s time I get out.”
Harry stands up and hands you your towel. You stand and quickly cover yourself with it.
“You know, a few scars don’t scare me.”
You give him annoyed look as you step out of the tub.
“It’s not about you though. It’s about how I barely recognize my body half the time when I look into the mirror. It was easier this time around since I knew what to expect…but…still.”
You throw on a bed shirt and some shorts, hang up your towel, and crawl into bed. Harry gets in only wearing his boxers.
“I have liked just pumping instead of breastfeeding. I’m way less sore since I don’t have a little mouth nibbling on me.”
“Do you miss the bonding at all?”
“Nah, I mean, I still rub my nipple on her face to help with the acne like I did with Jack.” You giggle and roll on your side to face him. He faces you and puts his hand on your back to rub it up and down.
“I know it’s not about what I think, but you have to know I think you look incredible.”
“You also thought the same when I was as big as a house nine months pregnant.”
“I did! You were glowing, babe. You still are.” He leans in to kiss you, and gently slots a leg between yours to get comfortable.
“I haven’t been cleared by the doctor yet. It hasn’t quite been six weeks.”
“I’m not doing anything, just getting cozy. Just wanna snuggle you.” He pulls you in closer to his chest. “You have an appointment next week, right?”
“Mhm, on Wednesday. And then I’ll probably go back a month or so later for the IUD. I’m just not ready for another invasive procedure just yet.”
“We can just use condoms if you don’t feel like having it put back in.”
“But you hate using them…”
“I know, but if it makes it easier for you, I don’t mind.”
“I love you.” You snuggle into his chest and sigh.
“I love you too.”
//
The day of Jack’s party, you pulled out all the stops. It was dinosaur themed because he was very into dinosaurs right now. You put up decorations all throughout the house and in the back yard. The pool was ready to use as well. Harry made everyone a nice big breakfast, and once it was done you both creeped into Jack’s room to wake him up. You both sit on the edge of the bed while Gemma takes her phone out to film everything. You all had gone out the night before to eat, it was nice for Jack to be so excited about his Grammy and Auntie.
“Wake up, baby.” You coo as you stroke his cheek.
“Hm.” He mumbles.
“It’s your birthday, darling.” Harry says.
Jack shoots up in his bed and look at the two of you with a big smile on his face.
“I’m three?!”
“You’re three!” You both say at the same time and tackle him with hugs and kisses. His giggles fill the room and it makes you both so incredibly happy.
“Come on, I got you a new bathing suit.” You tell him and show him the new trunks that had dinosaurs on them.
“Oh, wow!” He gazes at them.
“Gotta go potty first though, son.” Harry picks him up and brings him to the hall bath.
You go into Jessica’s room where Anne was sitting with her in the big comfy chair.
“She’s absolutely precious.”
“She really is.”
“Harry made a nice breakfast, mum, let’s head downstairs.” Gemma says. “He’s just getting Jack washed up for the day.”
You all enjoy the breakfast Harry made. There was fresh fruit, pancakes, vegan bacon, and muffins. Something for everyone.
“When’s my party, Mumma?”
“In a few hours. Mimi and Grandpa are coming, and so are your other aunties and uncles. Some friends are coming too.” You smile as his face lights up. You had invited his best friend, Ryan, and his mother Lisa. “And your cousins of course. Michael and Melissa are very excited to see you.”
“Melissa’s party was fun.”
“You remember it, baby?” Anne asks.
“Mhm, we painted.” He points to the paper with splattered paint on the fridge. “It’s Buster.”
“So it is!” She beams. “It’s nice he has a cousin so close in age.”
“I know, they’ll be great friends I think. And Michael loves being the older cousin. I can’t believe my little man is six! He’s going to into the first grade in the fall.” You shake your head.
“He’ll be over here babysitting before we know it.” Harry chuckles.
“God, don’t even say that. You know my brother lets him text me sometimes. He sends me these funny videos of him dancing or just saying hi.”
“Clearly you’re his favorite.” Gemma says. “So, Jack, how do you like being a big brother so far?”
“It’s okay.” He shrugs.
“He think she’s loud and boring.” Harry says.
“Daddy!” He whines.
“Sorry, was that supposed to stay between the two of us?” He laughs.
“You think she’s boring?” You can’t help but laugh too. You look down at the baby in your arms. “Well, I suppose she is, isn’t she?”
“She just sleeps. She can’t even play.” Jack says.
“But she’ll be able to when she gets a little older. And then you can show her how to play nice with all your toys.” You explain. “Won’t that be nice?”
“How come you had a girl and not a boy, Mumma?”
You and Harry look at each other, then to Anne and Gemma who were cracking up, and then back to Jack.
“Well, buddy, Mummy’s and Daddy’s don’t get to decide.” Harry says.
“Why not?”
“It’s just how it works.” You say. “Are you sad you don’t have a little brother?”
“No, I like having a sister.” He gets up out of his seat and crawls up on you and into your lap. “She’s pretty, just boring.” He gives his sister a kiss on the nose and everyone at the table awes.
//
Your yard was full of people. Plenty of adults keeping their eyes on the kids in the pool. Jack was having a wonderful birthday. It was the first time your extended family got to meet Jessica as well. You were happy to pass her around. Anne and Gemma were big helps in keeping the food outside stocked up.
Harry tells you to sit down with Jack at the table as he comes out with the large cake. Jack blows out the candles when everyone is done singing. It was very cute. Harry cuts the cake for everyone, while you help Jack open up his various presents.
“What do we say?” You say to your son.
“Thank you everyone!”
Jack gets up and gives hugs to his family.
“I can’t believe how big he is.” Rachel says to you as she digs into her cake.
“I know! Too big if you ask me. Wouldn’t mind if he stayed like this.”
“Oh, but it’s fun to watch them grow.” Sarah says. “I love when my students come back to visit me.”
“Mumma, come swim!” Jack says to you.
“I can’t yet, honey. Why don’t you find Uncle Niall, he’ll swim with you.”
“He’s with Daddy.” He points over to Harry and Niall who were deep in conversation.
“Alright.” You squint over at the pool and see Kyle swimming with Michael. “Uncle Kyle’s in the pool with Cousin Michael, you can go in with them.”
“Okay!” He runs off.
“No jumping!” You shake your head.
“I’m glad you guys got one of your own, but you’re still welcome to come over once my school year is over.”
“Thanks, I’m sure we’ll take you up on that. He loves when Harry jumps off the diving board with him.”
“How have you been feeling?” Rachel asks. “Does it take longer to recover after a c-section.”
“Yes and no. I was in the hospital longer. I mean, it’s a major surgery. My scars are healing up nicely though. It’s just been six weeks, I have an appointment with Dr. Johnson on Wednesday. I’m hoping she’ll be able to clear me. I’m in some major need of loving with my husband.”
“I bet.” Sarah giggles. “Niall said he’ staying home the entire month of June with you?”
“Yeah, he said he wanted to be home to help more. He’s the best. He’s going to do half days after that, and then when school starts he’ll take Jessica to work with him until she can go to daycare.”
“You’re going right back in the fall?” Rachel asks.
“Yup, it’s fine though.” You shrug. “I was sort of spoiled last time. I’ve got the hang of things now.”
“Auntie Y/N.” Michael says coming up to you. “Are there any more juice boxes. There’s none in the cooler.”
“Oh! Sure, give me one second I’ll bring some out, my love.”
“Thank you.”
“Excuse me.” You say to the girls and go inside. Your phone had been sitting on the kitchen counter charging. You check and see that Detective Ruiz had called. “Shit.” You swipe your phone to call her back. “Hi Detective, I’m sorry I missed your call…my son’s having a birthday party.”
“No problem. I just wanted to let you know we got the lab results back.”
“Already?”
“We expedited things. His DNA was on there.” You take a deep breath as she continues to speak. “Thank you for bringing that in, it really helps with the case.”
“What are the next steps?”
“We may need you to come in and testify once the case is brought to court.”
“Will I need a lawyer?”
“You’ll want one, yes, just to help you. We’re hoping to get this moving along quickly. The other women have also agreed to testify. We have a strong case against him.”
“So…he would be there…in the courtroom?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
“I know that it won’t be an easy thing to do.”
“I said I wanted to help the best that I can, and that’s what I intend to do.”

The Freedom of Expression Ep 33 - Fujikawa Kyuji's retirement, & a mystery safe, & an appeal for mystery location suggestions.
K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru starting this episode of The Freedom of Expresion. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome. Um, I've brought a copy of Tokyo Sports with me..
T: Thank you!
K: Its this page...Fujikawa Kyuji's retirement.
J: Even I understand this.
T: Yeah..How do you feel as a Tigers fan when you see this, Kaoru?
K: Well...Im wearing him on my t-shirt..
J: Yeah, thats cool.
T: Its really cool.
K: Well, I quite like him....out of all the Hanshin players.
J: If you were to explain it to a baseball novice like me, what is special about him as a pitcher?
K: His fastball, yeah his fastball.
J: He doesn't throw curveballs, right?
K: Yeh. His fastball burns through the air...well, at least it seems like it. I've never stood against it so i don't really know, but...*1
And then, even if they know a fastball is coming, they can't hit it.
J: Even when those professional batters know a fastball is coming...
K: He's gotten better and better since 2005 when they won the league.
J: What is his max throwing speed?
K: Hmm, what is his max?
T: Isn't it around 150km?...But it's not just his speed..
K: There are people who throw faster, but no-one can hit his throws.
J: Ah, rather than speed, he has the power to stop the batters.
K: Mm, even if they hit it, it never goes very far.
T: They say its like the ball grows out.*2
J: Ah, like the ball grows out from his hands?
K: He's retiring, but the season hasn't ended yet. He's in the second team at the time of this recording, but there's still a chance he might rise up and throw for the first team. I really wanna see him throw in this season. He only needs 5 more saves to get into the Golden Players Club.
J: Oh yeah right?! Wouldn't you like him to get in, right? Can he not play for another year? Is that no good?
K: No, he can't.
T: He's already worn out.
K: He's apparently been intending to retire since last year. But he did surpisingly well last year. Well, it sounds a bit wierd to say it like that, but...(haha)...he managed.
J: I see, I see.
K: But this year, it seems like his body is starting to grumble at him.
J: Ah, he feels its time to step back. How old is he again?
T: I think he's 40 this year. He's in the Matsuzaka generation. He was born in 1980.
K: In the All Star series, players like Kiyohara or Cabrera...was it Cabrera? They say 'Straight out'*3
J: Oh, before they throw?
K: Yeh, like when they are going for a fastball
J: Incedible.
K: And then they get three strikes. Its like they want a manga-style showdown. It does sometimes seem like manga, right?
J: Yeh, like 'Star of the Giants'.
K: Yeh, yeh.
J: Or 'Apache Yakyuugun'.
K: And they really do get three strikes.
J: So cool....Well, one way to look at it is, he is still a star of the baseball world.
T: Well, yeh. Every player has to retire at some point.
K: Yeh, its sad, but..
J: What will he do? Will he become a commentator? Or a coach?
K: I think he'll become a coach. He's still active at this moment though.
J: So what about Hanshin winning?
K: They will win!
J: Oh, good. Haha.
K: But the Giants are strong...they never lose.
J: Lets take it step by step.
K: I hope they do.
J: This is all we ever say, haha, hoping they do well.
K: Hmm, well, yeah. Ok, Joe, could you tell us today's topic.
J: Yes, ok well I'd like to introduce some kinda mysterious news this time 'Unsolved mystery of metal safe placed right in the middle of field.' A large safe has been discovered in the middle of a farming area in New York state, USA. By whom, when, and why the safe was put there is a complete mystery. However, the land owner  has said, 'Its best just to leave this mystery as a mystery'. A note stuck on the side of the safe bared the message, 'If you can open this safe, you can have the contents of it'. Despite the land owner saying it shoud be left as a mystery, large crowds gathered attempting to open the safe due to the note. But eventually, they were ordered to leave by the police.
K: I like this.
J: Do you?
K: Yeh, I do. I love stuff that makes no sense.
J: What is this all about? I wonder whats in the safe? What part of this story are you most interested in, Kaoru?
K: Well, I wonder what type of safe it is, first of all.
J: Yeah, it just says its big. Maybe like the size of a fridge?
K: And its in the middle of a farmer's field?
J: Yeh, someone must have carried it there.
T: Yeh, first of all someone has done that.
K: And the land owner is saying just to leave it there?
J: Yeh. I kinda got the feeling it would get in the way of the crops though.
T: Right.
K: So, the farmer didn't put it there?
J: Yeah.
T: Well, thats not written here.
Kamk: No, I bet he did.
K: Haha
J: The landowner?
Kami: Who else could have done it? Yes, he did.
K: Hahaha.
J: Is that the mystery solved then?
Kami: The mystery is him saying its fine to just leave it there. Thats stupid. He's orchestrated this himself.
J: Kami, what do you think is in the safe?
Kami: There must be some money in it at least.
J: Ahh.
Kami: Just a bit of money...
T: Do you think he's hiding his Playboy collection in there from his wife or something?
Kami: He wanted to make it into the news.
K: Ahh, well thats possible. Anyhow, its interesting.
J: Yeah.
K: This type of thing is really good.
J: Mm, its not hurting anyone, its not benfiting anyone..
K: Yeh, when the crowds gather the police will move in, right?
J: I also think this kind of thing is really interesting.
Kami: Don't you have a garden at your family home, Joe?
J: I do, but its not big enough to fit a large safe in it. A ??? *4 would fit though.
K: Would you be ok if a crowd gathered?
J: No no, that would be no good.
T: Haha
J: Its not that type of garden. It would be tough if they all turned up..everyone would be like, 'Whats going on??!' Its right on the edge of Hachouji, quite rural. Your neigbours are right there. Its different from the middle of Tokyo. The neighbours would be shocked.
Kami: I wanna do something like this on this show.
J: Yeah. A kind of unexpected happening.
K: Like what? A set-up?
J: Yeh, yeh. Not like a mean joke, but.. just something to see how the world reacts to it.
K: Ahh, I see.
T: Well, thats already happened once with us, with the sound mysteriously cutting out.
Kami: Tokyo Sports could write an article about it.
K: But even if we devised something, we wouldn't be able to say anything about it, right?
J: Yeh, we wouldn't be able to.
K: So we could only set it up..
J: But if everyone was talking about it, it would make the news.
K: And then we could make it a topic here  someday...
J: Someday...ten years later or something?
K: Noo, you wanna do that? Haha.
J: I wanna do something mystery related though.
K: Kami could set something up?
J: Oh, thats a good idea.
T: Yeah.
K: It would be fun if we tried to solve it.
J: Yeah, it would. Do you normally like reading detective novels?
K: Yeah, I do. I don't read tonnes of them though.
J: Aren't they doing that type of thing in trains and stuff recently...JR did it..
T: Oh, they did.
K: Like a detective game?
J: Yeah its like a game.
K: Our drummer is really into that kinda thing.
J: Oh, yeh yeh yeh. Shinya did say that he liked it. But I think this type of thing is pretty exciting.
K: Should we go and try that type of thing out?
J: Should we reserve it?
T: Yeah.
J: I wonder if any are on at the moment.
Kami: Lets do it!
T: Ah, but in this kind of situation (i.e. covid )...
K: Right, they might not be doing them at the moment.
T: I think I saw something going on in Shimokitazawa or somewhere before though. Like a mystery solving challenge.
Kami: Lets go to a mystery/supernaturl spot.
J: Now we've arrived at mystery spots.
T: Eventually.
J: Should we go?
T: This is our (Tokyo Sports') speciality.
K: Right? Well, I've been waiting for this too.
J: Eh? Is that ok for you?
K: Yeah, its ok.
J: Its quite scary for me.
K: Really?
J: Yeah, I get really scared.
Kami: So when I say a mystery spot I mean  something like going up a slope the wrong way or something *5, not something scary.
J: Oh, that type of thing? Kami, I want to ask you this...are ghosts real?
Kami: .......... Yes.
J: But they are different from you, right?
Kami: Yeh. I mean, to be honest, I don't really know.
J, K: Hahaha
J: Well, you might get into trouble if you were explicit about it.
T: One of our reporters apparently had a UFO experience near Chosho city, in Chiba.
J: Would that be ok though? UFOs?
K: Would it?
T: They apparently appear quite often in Choshi.
K: Really?
Kami: Aren't UFOs a bit scary?
J: They are too scary!
K: They are not scary.
J: Have you ever seen a UFO, Kami?
Kami: Um..
K: Ah! I got it! Lets appeal for ideas...Of any mysteries people know about.
T: And we can solve them.
K: Mm, and then we can go to the place.
J: Lets do it.
K: Ok, everyone, if you know any mysterious, not scary..well, a little bit scary is ok...
J: Just a little bit. No real haunted places.
K: Yeah, not like that, but any places with a bit of mystery, that make you wonder.
J, T: Yeah, thats good.
K: We can go to that type of place and try to solve the mystery.
J: Yep!
K: So please send us your ideas! I want us to go somewhere.
J: Me too.
T: Yeah, me too.
J: Its not exactly the TFoE detective club, but..
T: Ah, that sounds cool.
J: We'd be off to solve the mystery.
K: Like with one of those big cameras?
J: ???
K: ???*6
J: Yes, like that, like that. Oh, im looking forward to it.
K: Ok, well, lets end here. Please subscribe. Thank you very much.
T: Thank you.
*1, 2, 3 I know nothing about baseball, so im doing my best to interpret this.
*4 Couldn't catch.
*5 Not sure im understanding this correctly.
*6 Too fast, couldn't catch.

“take a seat, we’re gonna be here a while” with bucky barnes? please and thanks! i love your writing btw xoxo
i know this was sent ages ago but i needed to get mi creative juices flowing so im filling this prompt now! thank you for sending this and thank u so much for enjoying my work!!
~~~~~~~~~
Bucky appears in the doorway look grumpy, lumpy, and thoroughly confused. He stuffs his hands in his oversized hoodie and glares at you from the shadows, frown deepening as you catch his eye and grin.
“Good morning,” you sing-song. The stormcloud in the doorway grumbles like thunder.
“It’s two-thirty,” he says, and you just shrug.
Natasha whacks you on the side of the head which hurts like a bitch (not that you’d tell her) and says, “Stop moving.”
“What are you doing?” Bucky asks, sounding wary. He shuffles further into the room with a deeply suspicious squint, trying to see what Natasha is doing on your head. You sit cross-legged at her feet while she works - she’s already sectioned your hair so you’re sure you look a treat with the deformed buns littered over your head. Now she’s got the clippers and is carefully shaving the hair at the nape of your neck, moving up in careful strokes.
“Shaving my head,” you tell Bucky, gesturing to your hair wildly which earns you another slap from Nat. “Duh.”
“Why?” Bucky asks slowly, like you’re dumb, and maybe you are but honestly you’re just so bored. Quarantine sucks, your hair sucks, you’re sick of it getting in your face and in your mouth and being a general pain in your ass. Training is a nightmare with long hair, Steve always sits on it somehow during movie night, and Sam won’t stop bitching about it clogging the drain in the gym showers. This is what’s best for everyone.
“My hair, my choice,” you say, and Nat hums in agreement. “I wanna see what my skull looks like. Don’t you ever wonder that? What if I’ve had a weird shaped head this whole time and never knew.”
“You do have a weird shaped head,” Bucky says, “Don’t need to shave it to figure that out.”
“Rude,” you huff. Under you breath, like an actual child, you mutter, “Your mum’s got a weird shaped head.”
“My mum’s dead,” Bucky says, deadpan. Nat snorts and you grab a chunk of your hair to throw at Bucky, but it just falls uselessly at his feet.
A few beats of silence pass, save for the low buzz of Nat’s clippers. It feels really nice, like every stroke is ten pounds off your shoulders (or scalp, you suppose) and you can’t wait for Nat to be done. She moves onto the next section, kneeling in a ring of your hair on the ground, while Bucky just stands in front of you shuffling from foot to foot like an idiot.
“Take a seat,” you say, gesturing to the floor space in front of you. “We’re gonna be here a while.”
Bucky hesitates for a second. You can hear his metal hand whirring in the pocket of his hoodie like he’s wringing his hands together, but eventually he folds himself down to sit cross-legged in front of you. You smile at him, and he smiles back but it morphs into more of a laugh. His face scrunches up all cute as he looks at you and you can’t help but poke your tongue out at him.
“You look funny,” he says, gesturing to the weird buns Nat’s put your hair in to hold it out of her way.
“That’s rich,” you say, gesturing to his face. He rolls his eyes but he’s still smiling, so you know he’s not really offended. But you’re looking at him now and he does look funny - dark circles under his eyes, red rimmed like he’s been crying or up all night or maybe both. He must’ve been wandering around the compound at two in the morning for a reason, and unless it was to shave his head as well, it probably wasn’t a good one.
He seems happy enough now, sitting on your bedroom floor with you and Nat and the soft hum of the clippers. She’s done one side of your head now, and it feels weird to not have the familiar curtain of hair tucked behind your ear. You reach up to move it only to find nothing there, your fingers brushing against fresh, cropped stubble instead. It feels so different - soft but rough at the same time, scratchy under your fingertips but so good on your scalp. You feel your eyes grow wide as you run your fingers over your new hair again, ignoring Nat’s annoyed huff at your movements.
“You like it?” Bucky asks, smiling at you stupid. A rush of giddy excitement shoots through your chest, spurring you to reach out and grab Bucky’s arm without thinking.
“Feel it,” you say, tugging his arm until his hand leaves his pocket. He looks wildly uncomfortable for a moment before he relents, letting you manoeuvre his flesh hand onto the side of your head.
“Do you want me to cut you?” Nat asks, but she doesn’t sound pissed. In fact, she sounds amused, and that’s never a good sign for you. But you can’t really focus on that when Bucky is now entranced with the feeling of your buzzed head under his fingertips.
He stares wide-eyed as he rubs the side of your head, and you let your eyes flutter closed at the feeling. It’s nice, alright? Bucky’s touch tingles all over your scalp and down your spine, little lightning bolts to follow his moody thunder from before. All trace of his bad mood is gone as he scratches at your buzz, now, making you shiver.
That seems to be the final straw for Natasha, who finishes off the last chunk and clicks the clippers off. The silence startles Bucky and he lets his hand drop, looking up almost guiltily at Nat as she says, “I’m done, I’m going to bed. Have fun, idiots.”
“Thanks Tash,” you say, but you don’t even look at her as she leaves the room. You’re too busy looking at Bucky.
“How’s it look?” you ask, all quiet in your now silent bedroom. Bucky snaps his gaze back from the empty space Nat once took up to you, eyes widening as he takes in the full picture of your middle-of-the-night-breakdown decision.
He swallows, but his voice still sounds hoarse when he says, “Um, good. Looks neat.”
“Neat, huh?” you say, and run your hand over your head. That’s different, for sure. Gone is the length and weight around your shoulders, and when you shake your head like a wet dog you’ve never felt so unencumbered. Bucky laughs at your antics and you grin back, almost breathless, so enamoured with the cool waft of the aircon on your nearly exposed scalp and the absolute lack of anything to get in your way. You say, “Yeah, pretty fucking neat.”
“I liked your long hair,” Bucky says, and you almost frown until he adds, “But I like this, too. Maybe more. It feels nice.”
“Like a tennis ball,” you say, nodding solemnly.
“You’re so fucking stupid,” Bucky says with an eyeroll, but you just grin. You rise onto your knees, crawling into Bucky’s lap before he can say anything and rubbing your head in his face like a deranged cat. He squawks and tries to lean away from you without also toppling over onto his back, and you just laugh. He grips your waist to stabilise you both and you settle a bit, letting your legs loop around his hips and your hands to rest on his shoulders.
“You think it feels nice,” you say, teasing lightly. Bucky makes to shove you off but you clench your thighs and hold on tight, all two-hundred pounds of Bucky no match for your stubborn idiot-streak. “You like it.”
“Said that, didn’t I? Turn your ears on,” Bucky says, but he’s blushing so you know you’ve won.
“You like me,” you say, and you grin, because you finally push Bucky over the line you always love to toe. Teasing Bucky is a sport and you’re the Olympic champion, the Usain Bolt - you win every time. Bucky growls and snaps a hand up to grip the back of your skull. You’re delighted to find his giant hand spans the entirety of the back of your scalp as he holds you in place. He scritches into the short hairs and you’re even more delighted at the feeling that zings down your spine to your cunt almost instantaneously.
“And you like that,” Bucky grins, all sharp teeth and dark eyes because he’s a devil and teasing you just so happens to be his Olympic gold as well. You make a sound almost like a groan, kind of like a purr, and nudge your head back into his hand some more so he keeps touching you like that.
“Don’t like you, though,” you say, breathless now so it doesn’t quite have the same impact. Bucky rocks you backwards, lying you flat so he can crawl on top of you despite the absolute carnage of your old hair littering the carpet and now, probably, all of your clothes. Good thing you won’t be needing those much longer.
“We’ll see about that,” Bucky says, and see about that you most definitely do.
Summary: Is this not the closest I’ve ever been to living?  The Kurosaki Family invites Rukia along with them to the Opera. Ichiruki/Rukia-centric one-shot inspired by the opera scene in Moonstruck. Set a little bit after FB arc.
PS: It’s a pretty famous song but if you haven’t heard Flower Duet  before, I highly rec you give this rendition a listen, it’s breathtaking! : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9NK-EbUAao
“ICHIGOOOOOOO! RUKI-CHAAAAAN!”
SMACK!
A day in the Kurosaki household was not complete without at least one collision between Isshin’s face and either Ichigo’s foot or fist.
“I don't know how many times I have to tell you, old man: QUIT DOING THAT!” Ichigo roared, swiftly kicking his father back to the other side of the living room.
Rukia waited patiently for Isshin to complete this strange ritual, a fond smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. “Oh, Masaki!” Isshin sobbed, throwing himself upon his poster. “H-how cruel, how unloving our son has become! And Rukia at his side, so pure and lovely! W-we truly have here a beauty and the beast!”
“SHUT IT!”
 The dark-haired shinigami watched them butt heads and felt a vague sense of nostalgia swirl inside her. I didn’t realize how much I…missed this, she silently admitted to herself. Seventeen months had passed and Rukia kept herself busy with work--very busy. Too busy to stop and realize just how much she missed life in Karakura. But now that she was back, the realization was sudden and overwhelming; she missed late night hollow-hunting, the bustling hallways at Karakura High, she missed Keigo, Mizuiro, Tatsuki, she missed indulging in her schoolgirl act, pretending that she was human and truly one of them. But most of all, she missed him. That was a realization that had set Rukia very much on edge. Ichigo was a comrade, a partner, a friend. A friend she found herself pining for in those seventeen months. She recalled a saying she learned in the human world, something along the lines of “absence makes the heart grow fonder”.
Absence had only made Rukia’s heart confused as hell.
Though almost two years had passed, her relationship with Ichigo picked up almost right where they left off. They bickered, laughed, they understood each other without need for words. But…now there was something new. No, not new; it had always been there. But now....now it was loud. And hard to ignore. It was something that Rukia couldn’t quite name, but its presence was undeniable. It wasn’t uncomfortable...but… but it was there.
“What do you say, Rukia-chan? Oh, please say you’ll be joining us?”
Isshin’s question snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Eh? I-I’m sorry?” she asked, startled.
“THE OPERA! An old buddy and colleague of mine has season tickets to the opera house here in Karakura. He’s away on a business trip so he gave me tickets to tomorrow’s show. We haven’t seen you in so long, the girls would just love if you came! SAY YOU’LL JOIN US!”
“Don’t push her, Dad!” Ichigo said irritably. He turned to Rukia but didn’t meet her gaze. “Seriously, y-you don’t have to go. It’s really boring, the last time I went I wanted to die-”
“OH, BUT THAT’S NOT TRUE,” Isshin cut off gleefully, shoving Ichigo out of the way and putting an arm around Rukia. “The last time we went, Ichigo was but a boy. Though only eight at the time, he was so moved by the performance that he wept and blubbered all night long--”
“HEY! N-NO I DIDN’T!”
“Yes, you did!” Karin called boredly from the kitchen.
Ichigo hunched up his shoulders and scowled, his ears and cheeks an angry shade of red.
“I’d be delighted to attend this...this ‘op-ohr-a’, Mr. Kurosaki!” Rukia declared, a cheerful and sparkly smile on her face. “Excellent! Come tomorrow evening at 7, and dress your very best, my dear! The opera is a most formal event,” Isshin beamed.
“Whatever. And get your arm off her!” Ichigo grumbled, yanking Rukia away from his father and up the stairs to his room.
“Ah, young love,” Isshin sighed after them.  “Eager to get her to your bedroom, I see? Yes, yes, I’m sure you have a lot of catching up to do, if you catch my drift--”
“SHUT UP!” Ichigo screamed over his shoulder. He hurried Rukia inside his room and slammed the door shut.
“Nice to see the family dynamic hasn’t changed,” Rukia said, a sly smile on her face. She crossed her arms and leaned against the wall alongside his bed.
“1000 Yen says my dad’s got an ear pressed up to the door right now,” Ichigo replied. He sounded annoyed but there was a humorous glint in his eye. He looked up and met her gaze. They both dissolved into a quiet, gentle chuckle.
“Feel free to sit, you know,” Ichigo said, gesturing towards the bed. “I know it’s been a while but time’s never stopped you from acting like you own this place.”
“No, that’s okay. I’m fine here,” Rukia responded, cursing herself for answering him a little too vehemently. Ichigo looked at her questioningly, and Rukia could have sworn she saw a very, very faint blush creep on his cheeks. A moment of silence passed.
Tension. That’s what it was.
“So what is this opera thing, anyway? I just realized I agreed to something I know nothing about,” Rukia asked, eager to change the subject and genuinely curious about this “most formal event” that moved a young Ichigo to tears.
“It’s, uh, like a play. But with only singing. Really loud, annoying singing. And fancy costumes. And they usually end in tragedy.” Ichigo said, scratching the back of his head.
Her amusement at his fumbling explanation made Rukia forget her discomfort earlier. She smirked and flopped onto his bed. “Sounds like fun. So this loud, annoying play moved you to tears, eh?”
“IT DID NOT-Hmph, *ahem*, It did not move me to tears, I told you already that I found it boring. And I SAID YOU COULD SIT ON MY BED, NOT LIE ON IT!”
“Oh, Daddy, th-they’re on his bed already! They certainly are fast, aren’t they?” a muffled voice that sounded suspiciously like Yuzu’s could be heard saying from the other side of the door.
Ichigo’s left eye twitched.
He swung the door open and Isshin and Yuzu tumbled onto the floor. “SCRAM!” He roared, shaking his fist as they hurriedly fled the scene.
_____
Giant, crystal chandeliers hung over the U-shaped hall, twinkling prettily in the warm, golden light. The house was packed with many well-dressed and well-to-do people. The euphony of various conversations and chatter rang pleasantly in the air. If Ichigo had been moved to tears by the place alone, Rukia would understand; it was truly, truly beautiful. She tilted her head back, taking in the glittering chandeliers and intricate paintings of flowers and stars on the ceiling. She must have looked visibly awestruck, for she turned to her side to find Ichigo looking back at her, an odd, almost tender smile on his face. She gave him a sharp elbow in the ribs. “What? What’s with that dumb look?” She snapped.
“AGH! What the hell, Rukia?” He glared, letting out a sharp exhale before putting on another smile, this one more teasing. “N-nothing, I was just thinking...the last time I was here as a kid, I remember looking up at the paintings on the ceiling and counting all the stars as a way to pass the time. I guess I was just wondering if you were doing the same.”
Rukia blinked. It was rare for Ichigo to divulge….well, really anything about his past and his memories. To share this random little anecdote felt oddly intimate. She felt her cheeks warm slightly and turned away. “Heh, no I wasn’t counting, I was just...admiring. She looked back up and couldn’t help but laugh. “Ichigo, there are hundreds of stars, up there! Did you really count them all?” He looked up too and smiled wryly, shaking his head. “Nah, the show always started and the lights would go off before I ever finished. But...I like that I don’t know. It’s this weird, unfinished mystery that just...stays up there on the ceiling, y’know?”
His amber eyes and fiery-orange hair glowed in the warm light of the hall. He glowed. Does he even know how handsome he looks in that stupid tux? Rukia thought, torn between feeling endeared and annoyed. And spewing out weird, lovely musings like that, too. What an idiot.
She looked down at the program in her lap. In intricate, gold cursive, the words Lakmé: Opera en 3 Actes shone smack dab in the middle. “Is...is this in French?” she asked. “Yeah, but it’s okay; you see those black screens above the curtains up there? They’ll have translations…”
The lights began to dim.
Quickly, stealthily, Ichigo stole one last look at Rukia in full light. She was already a beautiful woman but tonight she practically glowed. With the help of Yuzu and Karin, she had parted her cropped hair to one side and teased it into elegant waves. She had reluctantly let them put makeup on her, too, and Ichigo had a hard time keeping his eyes away from her lips, soft and painted red like a pomegranate. She was wearing a dress that Ishida had surprised her with a few weeks ago, a wine-colored sleeveless piece that gently hugged her form and flowed past her knees. Yeah. She glowed. It was annoying.
Y’know, I bet she knows exactly how good she looks and is only pretending to be oblivious. He thought. What an idiot.
The red velvet curtains pulled back to reveal what looked like a stone courtyard on stage, adorned with all sorts of plants and exotic flowers. But the set was nothing compared to the music that emanated from the pit in front of the stage. She’d never heard anything like this. Not on the streets of Rukongai, nor in the banquets and gatherings in Seireitei. What was it Ichigo had called them? An orchestra. An orchestra, an orchestra, an orchestra. She had to remember that word. How so many voices, so many different strange and wonderful-looking instruments, could come together and create a sound so unified and sweet amazed her.
A procession of people dressed in long, unstitched garments came onto the stage, singing words Rukia could not understand. A big man, clad in a costume beard and yellow robe, opened his mouth and began to sing a solo.
Rukia froze.
It was obvious what he was doing required much skill, but….he sounded...funny? Rukia narrowed her eyes and fought a smile, trying to reason with this deep voice that shook with such a fervent vibrato.
She heard a snicker two chairs away from her, and turned to see Karin in the dim light, her face contorted humorously. Rukia was about to join her before Isshin turned to his daughter with a glare so scary and dangerous that any humor at all in both Karin and Rukia was effectively vanquished.
So entranced was she by the costumes and lights and flutes and cellos that the dark-haired shinigami found herself forgetting to glance up at the translations above the stage. She looked just enough times to gather that this was set in a temple in which rites were being performed. The ritual ended, and as smoothly as they glided in, the singers drifted back off the stage, leaving behind two women.
The women, arm in arm, walked down to the “river” on stage to gather flowers. The one dressed in red turned to her companion and began to sing:
Viens, Mallika, les lianes en fleurs
Jettent déjà leur ombre
Sur le ruisseau sacré
qui coule, calme et sombre,
Eveillé par le chant des oiseaux tapageurs.
Rukia froze once more. This time, there was no urge to laugh. Goosebumps rose on her arms. Her ears tingled. What, Rukia thought shakily. What is this?
The other, dressed in a simpler, sun-colored dress answered her friend in a voice just as haunting and sweet:
Oh! maîtresse, c'est l'heure
où je te vois sourire,
L'heure bénie où je puis lire
Dans le coeur toujours fermé
De Lakmé!
 Rukia clenched her teeth, maintaining a stone-cold Kuchiki expression while her soul inside shook and quaked.
What is this?
                                                 Dôme épais le jasmin
                        Sous le dôme épais où le blanc jasmin
Like flowers landing on the surface of a pond, their voices floated, glided, rippled through the hall, lighter than air.
                                                    À la rose s'assemble
                                        À la rose s'assemble
The melody seemed to follow some invisible wave that drifted down, then up, then down, and down again. It was elegantly unpredictable, like the path a feather takes on the way to the ground.
Rukia’s throat caught. The swelling in her chest bewildered and almost angered her. This...this beauty was almost cruel. Her eyes felt hot. Her face remained expressionless.
                                                 Rive en fleurs, frais matin,
                             Sur la rive en fleurs, riant au matin,
I never did get the chance to understand what it is to live, Rukia thought. She had, in fact, died when she was only a baby.
I....could see traces of what life was in the youth and excitement of Ichigo and his friends...the sound of their laughter, their chatter about the future.
                                                 Nous appellent ensemble.
                                       Viens, descendons ensemble.
With each rise and fall of their voices, Rukia felt as though her soul was expanding. The singers’ figures became blurry behind the tears that began to well in her eyes.
But this…this swelling in my chest, and the goosebumps on my skin. My throat...feels tight.
A tear broke free and began to trickle down her cheek.
Is this not the closest I’ve ever been to living?
Ichigo gazed steadily at the stage, letting himself float and drift with the melody. It was no wonder the Flower Duet was such a famous song, even to those unfamiliar with opera. He cleared his throat as quietly as he could and turned to check on Rukia. His jaw clenched.
                                               Ah! glissons en suivant
                           Doucement glissons; De son flot charmant
She stood absolutely still, upright, her small, pale hands clenched into fists on her lap. She did not look at him. He watched with well-hidden astonishment as a single tear rolled down her cheek. She stared solemnly at the women on stage, blinking slowly. Her amethyst eyes glistened with the water and salt that filled them.
                                                         Le courant fuyant
                                  Suivons le courant fuyant
A lump began to form in Ichigo’s throat. He turned away, back to the stage. He couldn’t put into words what she was feeling, but he felt he understood it. He didn’t want to intrude on her moment, but he also wanted to let her know that she was not alone. Even when they were worlds apart, he’d find a way to reach her. Slowly, his hand moved towards hers.
His fingertips lightly brushed her wrist, and traveled up towards the back of her hand.
Rukia kept her eyes fixed on the singers. She gave no indication that she even noticed his hand on hers. A twinge of disappointment and embarrassment stung him. I...probably ruined her moment. I shouldn’t have-
His heart stopped. Silently, suddenly, the slender, cold hand seized his own. She intertwined her fingers with his and squeezed lightly. She did not look at him.
                                                     Dans l'onde frémissante,
                                      Dans l’onde frémissante
To this day Ichigo couldn’t say what the hell compelled him to do what he did next. Maybe it was the nearly two years of separation, or the swelling music and stupid, glittering, chandeliers messing with his head, or the way she gripped his fingers with such a quiet and loving intensity, or a mix of all of those things. Slowly, he raised her hand up, off her lap.
                                                   D'une main nonchalante,
                                      D’une main nonchalante,
Rukia stirred, tilting her head slightly towards him. He brought her hand up to his face and slowly, gently, firmly, pressed his lips against her knuckles. Rukia’s eyes flashed wide open, and now she turned to look at him. Another tear rolled silently down her otherwise stoic face. Ichigo opened his eyes and looked back at her.
                                            Dôme épais, blanc jasmin,
                             Sous le dôme épais, Sous le blanc jasmin,
Nothing was said, but a thousand words were exchanged between them. Ichigo lowered her hand but did not let go. They held their gaze for a moment longer, then turned their heads back towards the stage.
                                                      Nous appellent ensemble!
                                    Ah! descendons ensemble!
Hunter Hearst Helmsley x Fem Reader- "You're Beautiful"
During the 1980's, most professional wrestlers, especially ones in the World Wrestling Federation, weren't exactly Shawn Michaels-esque pretty boys.
There were a few that were pretty handsome and even were very over with females, but in the 80's, most professional wrestlers were quite ugly to look at.
And you were not attracted to them.
By the 1990's, before the Attitude era, you didn't care about professional wrestling, in fact, hardly anyone cared about pro wrestling before the late 90's Attitude era.
The WWF nearly went out of business during the 90's, after a decade when they made major pro wrestling draws like Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Macho Man Randy Savage and even Rowdy Roddy Piper household names and popular enough to cross over into pop culture.
Even some of the men you dated during the 90's didn't watch wrestling before the rise of NWO and the Attitude era, because they felt like they were too old to be watching it, and it was so silly, childish, corny and lame.
Though, when they thought of wrestling, they thought of the World Wrestling Federation and hadn't heard of ECW.
However, on a Monday night near the end of 1995, which is considered to be one of the worst years of professional wrestling ever, you were sitting on your couch in front of the television in your living room, flipping through the channels trying to find something good to watch.
You usually love whatever is playing on MTV, BET, occasionally Vh1, A&E, TBS, Comedy Central, and other TV channels, those were your go-to TV channels growing up, and you even did watch a bit of those channels that night since those channels you usually watch.
You even sometimes watched Cartoon Network if they were playing a cartoon from your childhood, during the majority of the 90's, Cartoon Network was a channel that played cartoons from throughout the 20th century so adults could either see cartoons from their childhood again and kids of the 90's could watch cartoons their parents or even grandparents grew up watching.
You should've had a spare TV Guide with you to see what's playing on television, but you couldn't really turn to the TV Guide channel since they scroll down so slowly of what's playing on television.
However, when you were flipping through the channels, you stopped at the USA Network that aired the newest episode of "Monday Night Raw", the match displayed on television was a match featuring Hunter Hearst Helmsley, a rich, elegant, classy 1800's Jane Austin/Charles Dickens blueblood aristocratic gentleman (that's a mouthful!).
When you had seen Hunter, your eyes were glued to him and didn't switch the channel.
He didn't look anything like the wrestlers you knew from the 80's like Hulk Hogan, Macho Man and Andre the Giant.
Hunter Hearst Helmsley looked like he should be on the covers of those cheesy paperback romance novels with Fabio on the cover, not wrestling.
You weren't in love with Hunter for his wrestling talent, but for his looks.
You started to watch "Monday Night Raw" just for him, even if "Monday Night Raw" was so damn cheesy and corny during this time (though was slightly improving a bit), and you eventually fell in lust with other pro wrestlers on "Monday Night Raw", like Razor Ramon (one of the few wrestlers of the New Generation era that was over and a fan favorite), Bret Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Marty Jannetty, and of course, the Heartbreak Kid and sex symbol of the WWF throughout the 1990's: Shawn Michaels.
'Tis a shame that Lex Luger was in WCW by the end of 1995, because he's pretty hot too.
You felt embarrassed and like you had lost some brain cells watching "Monday Night Raw" in late 1995, but there were a few hotties in that wrestling company.
You knew that rock stars, rappers, professional athletes and even serial killers have groupies, and of course, professional wrestlers have groupies as well, they're called "ringrats".
You had seriously thought of being a ringrat for Hunter Hearst Helmsley as well as other pro wrestlers in the WWF like Razor Ramon and Bret Hart, and after fighting the temptation, you did one night go to a "Monday Night Raw" show to sleep with Hunter as well as other pro wrestlers.
You had thought carefully what to wear to "Monday Night Raw".
You are going to be a ringrat, and groupies usually always wear slutty, skin revealing outfits for men to lust at them.
Kayfabe is a word commonly used in professional wrestling to describe something as real, be it anything from Razor Ramon being Hispanic, Hulk Hogan lifting up Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3, and Mankind being a psychopath.
Hunter Hearst Helmsley's character was a rich, classy 1800's gentleman who scoffed at cads that were beneath him, would he turn you down if you were dressed half naked and showed a lot of skin?
Though, you don't just wanna fuck Hunter, plus, wrestlers are playing characters and even back in the 1990's anyone with an IQ above their shoe size should know that wrestling is fake.
Not to mention, while watching "Monday Night Raw", you notice there are prepubescent little children in the audience watching this, and you're afraid some little kids will see you in a pretty skimpy outfit.
It isn't an outfit too revealing, like being dressed in a thong and nipple pasties, but it isn't something you'd want your teenage daughter wearing.
You had thought long and hard on what to wear, if Hunter will like you in your outfit, and if you don't do it with Hunter, you can always move to Razor Ramon, a major ladies man, or Shawn Michaels.
You decided to dress in some tiny acid wash denim short shorts and a makeshift crop top that tied at your breasts, but you prayed and hoped that Hunter would still bang you even if you're not dressed elegantly.
Thankfully, the WWF rolled to a town that was close to you, and you had arrived to that "Monday Night Raw" taping dressed in that aforementioned outfit.
You had butterflies in your stomach and felt like a giddy, overexcited schoolgirl when you saw Hunter, Razor Ramon, Bret Hart, Davey Boy Smith, and other wrestlers you fancied, tears of happiness weld in your eyes seeing them, and thank God you wore waterproof mascara.
You waited in line with some other ringrats, you felt like a hyper kid on sugar deep down inside, you were so excited to meet Hunter as well as other pro wrestlers, but you wanted to meet Hunter first.
You had never had sex with a professional wrestler before or even anyone famous before, though you did do it with a few guys on the wrestling team in high school.
As you waited in line, you chatted with other ringrats about how this is the first wrestling show you've ever been to and you've never done it with a professional wrestler before, they couldn't believe you.
Then, eventually, it was your turn, and you could nearly wet yourself in meeting Hunter Hearst Helmsley in more ways than one.
You smiled from ear to ear when you approached him, and as you walked up to him, his breath was nearly taken away by you.
No, he wasn't just playing his Hunter Hearst Helmsley character, he really did find you absolutely beautiful.
Like you when you first saw Hunter on television, his eyes were glued to you and looking you up and down.
"Hi" you said as you walked up to him, waving one of your hands to him.
"Hello" he greeted, "What is your name?"
He still talked in a phony, terrible British accent.
"Y/n" you confessed.
"Pleasure to meet you, y/n" he welcomed, taking one of your hands as you got closer to him and kissed the top of it like the gentleman he played on "Monday Night Raw", keeping kayfabe alive.
You could nearly faint when he kissed your hand, your entire body could turn red from bottom to top like in cartoons when a character gets kissed, and you smiled so much.
"You are absolutely beautiful" he gushed, getting up and putting both of his hands on the sides of your face, his eyes observing your face and body up and down.
You stared at him with an ear-to-ear smile and felt like a giddy schoolgirl inside as he touched you, you were trying to contain your excitement inside.
You legit feel like you're at Disneyland meeting Cinderella or Mickey Mouse or whatever, meeting people playing fictitious characters and keeping their characters alive, making you feel like you really are meeting them.
"Thanks" you said "Believe it or not, I've actually never actually done it with a professional wrestler before"
"Well, let me be your first" he purred, grinning as he said that.
"I actually started watching the WWF because of you" you confessed. "I never cared for pro wrestling until I saw you on a Monday night and was flipping through the channels, I changed the channel and found you having a match and couldn't keep my eyes off of you"
"I'm so proud of you" he gushed. "You chose me instead of those other cads"
He really is trying to keep kayfabe alive, even though you aren't buying that he's an English gentleman.
Even his British accent is terrible.
"Awwww, thanks" you said, smiling at him and looking like AJ Lee when she looks in someone's eyes and smiles at them. "Most other pro wrestlers aren't all that handsome, but you are"
"Precisely" he boasted, grinning.
"Do you like my outfit?" you asked, pointing at your outfit. "I was trying to decide what to wear, and I was scared you wouldn't like what I'm wearing right now since you play a classy, rich gentleman that scoffs at people beneath you"
"You look perfectly fine" he admitted.
"Oh, thank God!" you thanked to him, breathing a sigh of relief.
"You're welcome" he replied, smirking. "You are such a beautiful woman"
One of his hands stroked the side of your face, his thumb tracing down your jawline down to your chin.
"I'm thinking of having valets, women that escort wrestlers to the ring, wrapped right next to me as I walk to the ring" he confessed "Would you like to my valet?"
Oh. My God.
Your face and body completely froze, you didn't know what to think.
This is what he had in store for you that you didn't know about.
It's one thing to be a ringrat, it's another to be a ringrat turned valet.
Does that mean you're going to be signed to the World Wrestling Federation and be his valet?
"I-I don't know" you admitted, stuttering. "Am I going to be signed to the WWF and be your valet escorting you to the ring?"
"Yes you are" he admitted, nodding your head.
"It isn't just me being a valet for you once?" you asked.
"Well, it's your decision" he suggested.
He is giving you that decision, but you don't know what to decide.
He's so handsome and so are other wrestlers in the WWF, that means you get to travel with him and fuck them.
But...you'll give up your dreams, and you're in something that's a little bit corny and embarrassing that hopefully won't get any worse.
"I don't know what to do" you admitted. "I'll think about it, maybe I can be a valet for you onetime"
Even Hunter thought you can be a valet for him just once, he doesn't know what kind of trouble you'll get yourself into since you're a ringrat.
"I came here to fuck you" you admitted. "Pardon my language"
"It's alright" he understood, nodding his head.
You didn't want to say how you also wanted to fuck some other wrestlers as well: Razor Ramon, Bret Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Shawn Michaels and even Marty Jannetty.
Hopefully his feelings won't be hurt if you go off to sleep with them.
You're not sure if you want to confess that you want to sleep with other wrestlers tonight, because you're afraid you'll upset him.
Maybe he might even show you off to those other wrestlers and how beautiful you are, and they'll wanna fuck you and it'll turn into an all out gangbang.
"Do you mind if I say this?" you asked him.
"What is it?" he asked.
You took a deep breath, preparing what to say.
"It isn't just you I want to fuck tonight" you admitted "But also Razor Ramon, Bret Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty"
His eyes grew wide hearing that you wanna fuck all of those people.
"I hope you aren't upset by it" you said. "Although, having promiscuous sex leads to AIDS and HIV, amongst other STDS"
"Exactly" he admitted. "I'm not upset"
Hunter's character is very possessive of his valets, as evident by next year when he was furious over Wildman Marc Mero stealing Sable from him or when Mr. Perfect/Curt Hennig stole one of Hunter's valets.
Even Hunter admitted his women are his toys.
Hunter shouldn't be getting way too into kayfabe and taking it so seriously, he isn't really a rich 1800's Jane Austen-like gentleman, especially since those kinds of gentlemen carrying canes didn't exist anymore in the 1990's except in movies and TV shows.
That's the problem with pro wrestling: some people take their characters so seriously, they still play them when the cameras aren't filming, and sometimes, when you play a character on any wrestling show, sometimes you have to play that character all the time if you appear on other television shows.
That can be fine, but what if you're playing a nymphomaniac and you have to appear on Regis Philbin and Kathy Lee's talk show, you don't really wanna fuck Regis.
You're basically signing and selling your soul to the devil.
Though, again, wrestling is not real, and anyone who isn't a prepubescent youth should know that.
Hunter would even like to show you off to the other wrestlers, about how he's thought of turning you into a valet.
There have been ringrats he's slept with who are beautiful women, but not as beautiful as you are, much to the dismay of them.
In fact, many women ended up becoming ringrats and sleeping with other pro wrestlers in hopes that they can become a valet and eventual WWF superstar thanks to you.
Basically the Sable effect: Sable joined the WWF because she thought it would be her ticket to Hollywood, and the Bella Twins and Eva Marie followed suit, many other women have been like that as well.
And there has been controversy over "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" on MTV because of allegedly teenage girls getting pregnant just so they can be on those shows.
Later on that night, you made love with Hunter, and he even showed you off to other pro wrestlers who were in lust with you as well, especially Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty.
Did you get to fuck them? Oh yeah.
And you continued to fuck Shawn and Marty next year, but sadly, not Razor, who had left the WWF to go to WCW.
When you had went home, you thought long and hard whether or not to join the WWF or not.
You eventually decided to join the WWF, which was both wonderful and horrible.
When you eventually became Hunter's ringrat, men would cheer for you, but not for Hunter, and you eventually started sharing your own ideas with the WWF's creative staff.
Eventually, you blew up in popularity in the WWF and became the most popular woman in the company, and the most controversial person in the WWF.
Some people knew about your story, how you were a ringrat for Hunter, he got a boner for you and turned you into his valet, and there were many ringrats sending angry emails and letters to you, saying that they're ringrats who've slept with whatever pro wrestler and they didn't get turned into a valet.
Many people also thought you slept your way to the top, you're a gold digger, and you're basically a wrestling Monica Lewinsky, Courtney Love or Lil' Kim.
It's really Hunter's fault because it was his idea to turn you into a valet.
The alarm blared some terrible pop-punk abomination with too many synthesizers as Blitzo groaned, fumbling around some fuzzy thing to slam his fist into the clock and feeling more than hearing it crack. Damned cheap plastic. He stretched with a yawn, smacking his lips before realizing that there was a feather stuck to his tongue.
“Gah!” He jolted back upon realizing that Stolas was laying on his bed, eyes open and the edges of his beak curled in a bemused expression.
“Good morning.”
“Nearly gave me a-” Blitzo cleared his throat before taking a deep breath. “Right. Why are you still here?”
“You called me over, remember?” Stolas lazily reached over to the bedside table, plucking up his phone and waving it. “You wanted help sleeping, and I helped. You were snoozing like a baby when I woke up a bit ago, all snuggled against me like a little stuffed toy…”
Blitzo’s tail curled idly around the pillow, lifting it up so he could pick fluff out of the tear in the side. “Right. Well, whatever it was, it worked. I at least stayed asleep until the alarm went off- aaaaaand you’re touching me again.”
Stolas’s hands had found their way to Blitzo’s gut, fingers pressing the fabric down so it contoured more obviously around the baby bump. “It’s just… oh, I’m so excited! It will be wonderful getting to see another child grow up, and seeing you playing with them! You seem fond of treating your hellhound above her station, aren’t you? You’ll do well with a normal child too!”
“‘Uh… huh.” Blitzo said, only half-listening and trying not to drift off again as Stolas massaged his fingers over the sensitive skin. Stolas didn’t seem to notice the pause, and Blitzo’s middle glowed red and warm as he started using magic. “Hey, don’t mutate them in there, I’m counting on them not ripping straight out from under my abs.”
“I’m just checking on them… I can’t tell any specifics, but they seem to be healthy enough, and I think I can sense a long tail. No telling what kind it would be, though, so that doesn’t tell us much considering we both have one, does it?” He gave a little hooty laugh before glancing over at the now-cracked clock. “I must be going, there’s plenty to do- Stella is going on a vacation soon, and we need to have things settled back at the mansion before she does.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Blitzo waved a hand, brushing feathers off his shirt. “Go ahead, do whatever boring rich-boy shit you normally do when you aren’t calling me up.”
“I’ll be seeing you soon,” Stolas said, pecking a kiss on Blitzo’s forehead before he pulled his shirt off.
“Uh, you leaving typically means you’ll be getting less naked, not more,” Blitzo pointed out. Stolas simply hummed as he rummaged around in his duffel bag, extracting a neatly-folded collared shirt that looked far fancier than the one he’d slept over in.
“Those were my casual clothes, silly. I didn’t want to get anything important dirty. Shouldn’t you be getting dressed as well? I assume you have things to do yourself.”
“Of course I do!” Blitzo hurried over to his closet, pulling his own shirt over his head. Stolas whistled as the now-bare muscles flexed, and Blitzo rummaged through his closet. “While you’re here, I need some cash for new clothes. You saw how I ran out of shit the other day, and I can’t work when everything’s suddenly a crop top. I mean, I could rock it if I did some crafting to make them look like that on purpose, but you get my drift.”
“I might have some in here, I wasn’t sure if I would need any on the ride home,” Stolas replied, unzipping one side and pulling out a seed packet and a small book. A second pocket contained a condom and a pair of scissors, but the third had a small wad of cash. “Would this be enough?”
“Probably. I haven’t outgrown all of my pants yet, I mostly need shirts,” Blitzo said as Stolas set the money down on the bedside table after extracting a few bills. “Do you just carry around giant hunks of dough like that?”
“I’ve needed it a few times, and it pays to be prepared.” Stolas shrugged. “Anyway, I must be off. Good luck at work.”
“You too,” Blitzo said, resigning himself to just sitting back behind his desk for the briefing and picking something that matched his skin so it wouldn’t be as obvious. M&M wouldn't make jokes if they knew what was good for them.
By the time he turned around, Stolas had disappeared along with his duffel bag, but he’d left his shirt behind. Maybe he was just used to servants picking up after him, ugh. Well, Blitzo wasn’t going to deal with that right now. It looked soft, though, and he idly rubbed his fingers over the fabric, wishing he had something similar in his size. It felt just as nice as it had last night. Smelled nice too- waitwhatwhywashesmellingit?
The imp only realized he was sniffing the shirt when it was pressed up against his face. He balled it up and chucked it across the room, groaning as he pressed his legs together to hide a rising problem. Fuck. This was a problem for later-Blitzo, he had to be at work in half an hour. He could just jerk off when he got there. The chair was a better angle for it anyway.
The TV was on when Blitzo made his way to the kitchen- some commercial about a new erotica store down the street. Loona was on her phone and halfway through a cup of coffee, and Blitzo glared at her for daring to be able to consume as much caffeine as she wanted before filling a cup with cold water and splashing it directly on his face.
“Have fun?”
“We just fell asleep. He didn’t try any shit, at least,” Blitzo said, grabbing a toaster pastry and popping it into the toaster.
“Huh.” She shrugged, going back to her phone, and Blitzo resisted the urge to grind his thighs together.
It was going to be a very long day.
“And then, and then Tommy got into a fight with Anna, and I couldn’t let that stand-”
Geez, the bitch never shut up, did she? Blitzo’s fingertips drummed on his desk as he watched the client pace around in circles. Her head looked like a megaphone, and satan, her voice was blaring out like one. The story probably would have been entertaining any other day- it had involved cooking meth and moonshine, a police raid, two trips to the psych ward, and the CPS getting involved- but her voice was a lot more annoying in person than it had been over texts. It had a deep accent, but he couldn’t tell exactly where it was from.
(Plus she’d already been waiting when he arrived, so he hadn’t been able to rub one out, and it was warm as fuck in there because the A/C must have broken again, sweat dripping down his back and making his underwear stick directly to his ass.)
“Anyway, I need you to take out Tommy, Kate, and Elodie Jenkins, and then Alex, Alex Jr, Sloth, and Amy Brigby. Do not kill the kids, but if little Joey in particular gets caught in the crossfire I can’t say I’ll be up crying about it.” She turned and Blitzo jolted back to attention- his elbows had settled on the desk, chin in his hands. “Hey, were you even listening to me?”
“What? Sure, sure, you want us knocking off Tommy and Katie and Ellie and the Alexes and… Sluth? The hell kind of name is that?”
Her hands curled into fists, and she stomped her foot hard enough to rattle the bobbleheads on his desk. “Sloth! It was a nickname- are you gonna take the job or not?”
“We’ll take it, just write them down with descriptions. When there’s multiple targets, especially when they’re close to each other, we want to make sure we don’t take the wrong ones,” Blitzo said, tossing over a notepad and pen. She narrowed her eyes at him before scribbling them down.
“There.”
“Works for me. We’ll get right on it, then.”
She stuck out her hand to shake, and Blitzo rolled his eyes before standing up to lean over the desk. Her eyes darted down and he reached for her, squeezing the fingers hard enough to hear a crack.
“Ow! What the fuck, asshole?”
“I said, we’ll get right on it.”
“Are you- you’re a skinny bitch, what’s with the gut? You an alcoholic or something?”
Blitzo had to resist the urge to see if the button on her neck could actually switch her voice off. “Is that any of your goddamn business?” He shot back.
“It is if it keeps you from carrying out the hit for me!” She snapped her hand away, and Blitzo snarled.
“It won’t. We can still all perform our jobs just fine, and we’ll bring back their heads on a pike if you want, got it?” His lip curled up. “And I’m not fat!”
“No need to be so moody about it. I’ve got the cash, just tell me they’re dead. I wanna sock Sloth a good one when he ends up down here.”
“I’m not moody either.”
“Just do the fucking job and you'll get your money, I didn't think this would be so hard." She rubbed her hand on the way out and gave a growl that doubled over on itself with static-y feedback. When the door clicked shut, Blitzo collapsed back into his chair, scrubbing at his warm cheeks.
He needed a drink, but was going to have to satisfy himself with a leftover doughnut stuffed in his horse-toy drawer. Joy. At least he’d have fifteen minutes to jerk off before his other employees got here- right now, he'd take what he could get as a feather fluttered down from his shirt when he stuffed a hand down his pants.
