I’ve got some tma thoughts. I’ve seen some explorations of want vs need when it comes to how Avatars feed. Do they NEED to feed on fear or is it more like an addiction? I think that it’s a bit of both.
For example, in Jon’s case I think he NEEDS statements. They feed him. BUT I don’t think he needs LIVE statements. The paper ones feed him just fine, they just don’t “taste” as good and may not be as filling. But, he would just need more paper statements than he would live.
I think part of why he has more trouble than Daisy with control is 1) he is a fully fledged avatar who died and was reborn and 2) he didn’t have the emotional anchor(s) that she did. Daisy had Basira, who helped keep her human. In season 4, Jon was surrounded by people who didn’t like him. They weren’t friends. They blamed him for their situation. Daisy was eventually a friend to him, but she was also an avatar.
I think that Jon was losing his humanity and slipping into being a traditional avatar in season 4, but didn’t fully slip because of Martin. I think that in order to keep their morals and humanity (even when no longer human), avatars need human anchors to remind them of what they were.

Can you imagine jon/Martin finding out about tma and getting to see the fandom and how thousands of people love their tragic story and love them despite it all.
Like Jonathan sims, who ended the world. Who is so crippled with guilt and self loathing. Sees how many people love him and have written ESSAYS about how it wasn’t his fault. Jon who isn’t human anymore but clings to it with every ounce of strength, finding out that there’s an entire fandom who loves him even (especially) as a monster, who celebrate and draw him with as many eyes as possible. Jon finding out that thousands of people love him even with all his sins.
Martin, who’s been alone his entire life. Who doesn’t think he’s worth worrying over. Finding out how many people would die just to get a cuppa from him. Him finding out that the entirety of the fandom just wants to experience a Martin hug. That there’s an entire fandom of people who think he deserves so much happiness and friends and love. Martin who gets to see people realize how clever and intelligent he actually is, who credit him where credit is due and then some.
Just them finding out that thousands have heard their story and flaws and love them

Batman fun fact! Did you know that Scarecrow’s toxin doesn’t always cause fear? Sometimes it does the opposite! In Detective Comics #571, he wields a variant that completely inhibits the biochemical fear response, preventing people from feeling any concern for themselves or using basic common sense. He runs a racket administering it to star athletes, who take huge risks and get badly injured. Then they’re willing to cough up a lot for an antidote. Batman and Robin - here Jason Todd - catch on, but Bruce is dosed with the reverse fear toxin; since his intelligence is his greatest strength, being too overconfident and reckless to think twice about anything makes him his own worst enemy.
This premise was adapted in the Batman: The Animated Series episode “Never Fear”. There we see that with no fear of losing his moral integrity, Bruce becomes cold and merciless to criminals. Robin - here Tim Drake - has to catch somebody he leaves to fall off a building, tie him up to stop him endangering himself and others and give him the antidote to prevent him murdering Scarecrow.
But in the comic book, Jason is kidnapped by Scarecrow. (He gets gassed, and hallucinates Bruce dying and telling him that it was his fault.) He isn’t around to keep Bruce in check as he goes to rescue him through a series of death traps that he can’t resist cutting it as close as possible in. So how does Bruce not go off the deep end? How does he not lose sight of what’s important? Not lose himself?
Because even a drug designed to shut down stress at the most fundamental level can’t overpower his true worst fear. The Dark Knight might feel fearless…

Every letter addressed to Jonah Magnus just sounds like several men of good high standing who he’s tricked into giving him their knowledge money and affections realizing that they’ve fallen for a succubus but they can’t find it in them to hate him too hard- like do you know what I mean??? I know it’s just the old timey way of speaking but every statement just sounds like “please my evil twink, I beseech you!” Like this is why I can only imagine him as like very Dorian Gray-esque in my head. Please someone tell me I’m not crazy for thinking this that’s literally their evil bbg that’s sucked them for all they’re worth and thrown em away

It would’ve been really awkward if Jon had just kept running into former Statement givers in public. Like, imagine you’ve spent months dealing with some fucked up eye creature haunting your nightmares to feast upon your fear, but then you spot him at Tesco as he’s pulling out a calculator to figure out which loaf of bread (on sale!) offers the most bread per pound (🍞/£). How would you cope with that?
