Such a missed opportunity to tie Huey’s fear of the unknown & Ducktales strong themes revolving family & not using it for an arc for him
Bc like what do you mean you’re Comparing Huey to Fethry, someone who Scrooge & Donald clearly ignored & he spent like years in that deep sea laboratory alone 😭😭😭 LIKE I cannot let that go
How would that not freak a little kid out. Like here’s this family member that I’m clearly like and I’ve been compared to & what does that say about my future relationship & role in this family

Amphibia season 1 rewatch + notes :)
So I just finished rewatching the ENTIRE season 1 of Amphibia and I have some notes on the episodes that stood out to me! There are some quick notes, a couple lengthy analyses and even some headcanons sprinkled in! It's like a written stew of season 1! I'll be doing a written Amphiba stew for season 2 too!!
It's kinda long so you could just skip this or hit the keep reading button and give it a read!
S1: E2 Cane Crazy
Anne shows general disregard over other people's things
(Mimicking Hop Pop and breaking his cane, throwing all the wood carving things that Loggle made, even a coo coo clock that she even said was nice (And for him to say it took 20 years to make right after she broke it))
S1: E2 Flood, Sweat and Tears
Anne would be the WORST during sleepovers and I LOVE IT!!! My girl is just being a tween, staying up late, playing would you rather and keeping everyone else up. I think that's ADORABLE and now I'm thinking about how sleepovers might've been back home with her, Sasha and Marcy…
She also just stays up late in general?? She reads dumb magazines and eats CRUNCHY snacks. She is really just 13,,,
Tumblr media
And it looks like Sprig does it too, not as much as Anne (probably because he is younger than her) but it seems like it has to be in his terms. Before, he looked to be annoyed with it when he was trying to sleep. But, if he was awake, like in the beginning or at the end of the episode, he had no problem staying up playing would you rather!!!
S1: E3 Hop Luck
Anne: Old things are dumb!
And
Anne:* violently GRABS Sprig and shoves him against the wall* don't you DARE talk about pineapple in my pizza… Ever…
Anne:
Sprig:
Anne: Okay! Let's go get these ingredients!
HHHH ANNE!!! I love this funky little child SO MUCH!!!
Hop Pop loves these kids so much that he was willing to put aside his old, traditional family recipes in exchange for making pizza with them. My heart is gonna explode I'm-
Anne please don't make your surrogate frog brother get married just to get some pizza dough I'M BEGGING YOU-
S1: E3 Stakeout
Hop Pop: I'm a crisp 68!
Is Hop Pop actually 68 or does he mean more of 68 going on 80 68? Either way he looks great!
Anne has Blam Berry Blitz ("the drink that punches you in the face and doesn't stop") in her bag along with all the OTHER stuff we already saw (air pump, toe nail clipper, pencils, cat toys, bath bombs, etc)
Tumblr media
Anne is officially those friends that have EVERYTHING in their bag no matter what.
I really like the relationship between Anne and Hop Pop, how they both in some way yearn for what was but in different ways (Anne wanting to go home and Hop Pop's olden ways when he was a little pollywog) but are still similar in how they try to remember. They try and try and try to keep what little family/friends they have safe and protected. They love the relationships they've formed with other people (And with each other) and would go great lengths to help and protect them!
Also I MAY be looking way too into it buuuut was Boulder-Tron (that rock dude that Polly hallucinated at the end) supposed to foreshadow Frobo??
S1: E4 Taking Charge
Okay quick one, Anne nearly having a whole ass panic attack when her phone dies because she couldn't look at her photos or videos of home actually made me sad. This girl is only a CHILD and her entire home and everything is gone and she for real thought she couldn't ever get it back,,,
Hop Pop: I mean, the part where the island itself is revealed to actually be…!
Sprig: No!
Polly: Don't!
Anne: Spoilers
I dunno why and again, I MIGHT BE LOOKING TOO DEEPLY INTO THIS, but maybe this is foreshadowing something with the land of Amphibia? That maybe there is more to this crazy land than we know? Maybe even a reason it, along with all the other universes even exists???
S1: E5 Breakout Star
AHSBWJOA ONLY EPISODE 5 AND ANNE ALREADY HAS HER PHONE'S LOCK SCREEN OF THE PLANTER FAMILY I'M-
Tumblr media
S1: E7 Dating Season
Anne said that ⅔ of ALL soul mates start out as "just friends"
I'm looking at you, team Sashannarcy
S1: E7 Anne vs. Wild
Hop Pop's behavior at the end of the episode when Anne finally shows them the calamity box is awfully sus…
He doesn't say anything but "may I?" To inspect the box and then is like "Nope, never seen it" I just feel like he knows something and then adding onto it with the whole burying it to protect his family just sounds like… he definitely knows something, maybe not a lot but there is something he's not telling the others
Also, why would a book that HE has have information on the Calamity box??
Tumblr media
(I fully support the Dr. P was a Planter and also possibly the pink frog who was friends with King Andrias theory)
S1: E10 Toad Tax
At this point, Anne said that she has already been in Amphibia for over a month now.
(And damn, Sasha's been in prison for like a month,,, yikes)
Also Hop Pop teaching Anne how to pay taxes is so adorable, she really is part of this family now guys,,,
And I love how Anne was able to win over the Wartwood people by being her natural, charming and not to mention caring self. Anne, like Marcy and Sasha, can be selfish because honestly what kid, especially a 13 year old, isn't.
But what matters is that she always tries to make up for it.
Yes she did join the arguably sketchy toads into getting the taxes from everyone in order to feel somewhat included in ANYTHING, but while she was doing it, she knew it was wrong. Anne knew it was wrong and tried to give back some of the stolen stuff. Hell, even at the end she risked her safety to protect people she felt didn't even LIKE her, like, Anne literally broke her arm from them because that's just how Anne is.
S1: E10 Prison Break
I always forget how like,,, SUPER cunning Sasha is. I mean, she was able to talk FIVE toads into quitting within a WEEK as a PRISONER. Like??
Grime: That's not a bird. It's a heron, a murderous predator that happens to love the taste of flesh
Sasha: Cute
The lines in this show I'M-
So Anne was a varsity tennis player and Sasha was a cheerleader and did Tai Chi. I still can't believe they were both jocks,,,
(Well, Sasha I get but Anne? Sweet ol' lil baby with the lanky limbs Anne???)
Hey um, why the FUCK does Grime have acid spit?
Sasha: *looking at photo of her, Anne, and Marcy* Hold on for a little longer, girls. I'm coming for you. And when I find you, we're gonna get home. But first, I think we're gonna have some fun with this place
Tumblr media
Okay so this line right here. Now I may not be even remotely correct but this line, this last piece of dialogue spoken by Sasha right before the episode ends leads me to believe that she… doesn't take this world seriously.
At least not yet.
I think the 3 girls all see Amphibia differently: Anne as more of an obstacle, a wall preventing her from being home, Marcy sees it as an escape from her life with constant stimuli, and Sasha, she sees it as just really another thing to control. Everyone and their mothers know that Sasha can be a little more than controlling and we all know that she liked being lieutenant just a little too much.
This world is interesting to Sasha, not in the interesting that Anne sees it (who is interesting in the new people and the relationships she's formed) or Marcy (who is also interested in the relationships she's formed along with the thirst for knowledge and again, the constant stimuli in an environment where she isn't stifled and allowed to flourish).
No, Sasha sees Amphibia as interesting because it gives her something to control. In a world that is not your own, a world that you will leave eventually, who would actually FOLLOW the rules put in place there? Especially a 13 year old who is basically like a war commander who, even if she does do something wrong or breaks a rule or two, the only person who might even dare to stop her is Grime, and even then, he might just encourage it because it is season 1 and they aren't that close and he doesn't really care for Sasha at this point.
She also is actually very logical. Everything she does in Amphibia, all the morally questionable things she does, it is always for the same reason (or at least at first), to get her and her girls home. Wanting to sacrifice and kill Hop Pop at the end of season 1? Well The toads had promised if she helped, they'll help her find Marcy and bring the 3 of them home. She cares for Anne and Marcy SO MUCH that she is willing to go great lengths to help keep them safe.
But even though Sasha didn't really care about anyone in Amphibia besides Anne and Marcy at first, it doesn't mean she won't ever. We see countless times throughout season 2 of Sasha caring. She feels regret with her impending betrayal on Anne and Marcy, she cares enough to try and warn Anne about King Andrias' evil plans. Hell, even in the season 3 intro we see her and Grime at Wartwood and it looks like they're gonna be starting another rebellion against the king to help all the amphibians in Amphibia.
I just really like watching Sasha's appearance and knowing what will happen in the future with her character.
S1: E13 Trip to the Archives
Anne: I get this place. It's like a library from my world. Zoo books and manga, here I come!
So whenever Anne goes to the library, presumably with Sasha and Marcy, she'd go straight to books on animals and manga probably while Marcy did whatever work they needed (if Anne's dialogue in season 2 with Marcy always doing the work for their group projects was anything to go off on)
I dunno, I think that's kinda cute that Anne liked reading books on animals and probably reading all the manga that Marcy recommended.
Maybe Anne and Sasha would sit right next to each other while Marcy worked and read fun manga together and cackle with each other while Marcy tried SO HARD to concentrate and NOT infodump to them because she's read that specific manga 20 times and HAVE YOU GOTTEN TO THAT ONE PART WHERE THE MAIN CHARACTER GOES-
S1: E15 Wally and Anne
MOSS MAN!!
When Anne wakes up in the middle of the night and goes to grab Wally at town square, her hood is up and it's dark. The only thing we can make out of her face are…
Glowing blue eyes.
Glowing eyes that share an uncanny resemblance to the moss men.
Tumblr media
And Anne loves doing elaborate, silly handshakes? That's so CUTE! Too bad none of her friends liked them as much as she did :(
When they finally reached the foggy mountain place, Anne noticed glowing blue butterflies and started to follow them, which led her right to the moss man.
WAIT ANNE ALSO DID ROCK CLIMBING BACK HOME?? FUCKING JOCK!!!
S1 E20 Reunion
Okay I WAS about to say that there wasn't anything to say about this last episode that hasn't already been said before BUT
The last couple moments, when Anne is holding Sasha off the cliff and trying to pull her up with the Planters, there's a couple interesting shots that I would like to talk about.
While the Planters were holding onto Anne, they say things like "Hang on, Anne! We got you no matter what!"
And even when the stone cliff starts to chip and break, none of the frogs back off, they don't loosen their grips, they just keep holding onto Anne.
And they will never let go.
Because they love her. Because in only 3 months, Anne was able to get a surrogate frog family and dozens of other frog friends in Wortwood. Because Anne has this amazing support system both literally and metaphorically. Because Anne is Anne. And Sasha...
Isn't like Anne.
Tumblr media
Matt Bradly himself even said that both Sasha and Anne are different from Anne, Anne is the heart, the emotional connection in their logical worlds. Anne can make so many friends so easily and Sasha… Sasha became a war genral, she lost a fight against the one person who she thought would never fight back.
Sasha doesn't have what Anne has. She doesn't have the kind of skills to make such strong relationships, the kind where you risk your life for the other, in such a short amount of time.
Hell, they even play a song called "Lean on Me", Anne has people to lean on and they would lean on her just the same. She found these people, made these friends, formed amazing relationships, in only THREE months.
"Maybe you're better off without me"
And Sasha was only dragging her down.
Sasha loves Anne, she cares for her and would do anything to protect her. That's why she let go. She didn't want to drag Anne down, to hurt her more than she already has.
Sasha would do anything for Anne, even die.
Over all notes:
Season 1 is SUPER FUNNY!! The lines hit and they don't rely on toilet humor to get the audience to laugh. They use great one liners and physical humor that isn't fart or butt jokes. They do an excellent job on showing how crazy the world of Amphibia is through humor like how the animals are always eating each other.
I really like how the characters were crafted so carefully! And the storyline!!! You could notice things that get explored in season 2 and I can't WAIT to see how many bread crumbs were left to lead up to season 3!
HOW DOES ANNE KEEP SO MANY THINGS IN HER BOOK BAG???
That stuff is in her SCHOOL BAG, why would she bring it to school??? So far I've got an air pump, toe nail clippers, pencils, cat toys, bath bombs and an energy drink. WHY??? I wonder if she held on to any of Sasha or Marcy's things too or ever forgot to give them back
Also again, I'M STILL IN SHOCK OF ANNE BEING A JOCK. I don't even know why I am, I knew she played sports and stuff it's just,,, she's so lanky,,,
Her and Sasha are jock buddies and WILL shove other jocks in lockers if they ever pick on their nerd Marcy.
I also am in LOVE with Hop Pop's screams lmao
Be ready for an analysis of season 2!

A look at Adam Taurus
Now that I’ve rewatched  RWBY up until Adam’s death, I kinda want to talk about him. There’s a thought in some circles that think Adam was a wasted character, that he had no arc or personality to say much of.
I don’t quite agree. Or at least, I don’t agree that’s where his actual flaws as a character are.
Tumblr media
Adam has a demonstrably clear and comprehensive arc built up over the course of the series. As far back as the Black trailer, we could see that this guy was someone Blake respected, who was also a bit of an extreme guy given the whole “trying to kill everyone on the train” thing. Naturally Blake left him after that, and he doesn’t show up in full until pretty much the last few minutes of Volume 2. Given how disgusted Blake was by his violence against humans, you’d think Adam would take the time to think on why she might possibly disagree with hm- ha, just kidding he goes on to help destroy Beacon Academy, specifically targeting Blake for leaving him, promising to destroy everything she ever loved, a promise he made good on by cutting off Yang’s arm when she tried to step in.
His presence kick starts Blake and Yang’s arcs from Volume 4-6, where each have to recover from the scars Adam inflicted on that night. As that happened, Adam makes a couple of appearances in Volume 5; the first one he kills Sienna Khan to take control of the White Fang, planning on turning it into his cult much like in Vale; the second appearance is in the finale, which has him lose his sway over the White Fang due to Blake and her friends forcing him to run off. Volume 6 begins with him slaughtering a bunch of White Fang grunts for making fun of him. He began the show having this power over Blake and loses it through the series.
The Adam Short before Volume 6 expands on his origins, showing his rise to power in each of it’s little segments, how Adam explains the Grimm masks as a fear tactic against the humans, how Sienna unintentionally encouraged his violent behavior, how even in the past he was more than a manipulative jerk to Blake, Power and control are a constant theme with Adam, each volume peeling back a bit on him until his end, where he ditched the mask to reveal the SDC symbol on his eye. From those details, one can surmise that Adam hated weakness, so he sough to obtain strength, and on his quest for it he turned into an abuser himself, one that Blake and Yang had to stop.
So if all of that is understandable, what is my problem with Adam?
Tumblr media
Well, he’s tied heavily into the Faunus racism plot, which I hate, but I’m not gonna get into that here. For now, I’ll say that my biggest problem with Adam is that... I just don’t buy him as an effective cult leader.
Let me explain. It’s not inconceivable that Adam was able to get far in the White Fang due to his strength alone, but whether due to the acting or a lack of scenes with this, I don’t get the sense that he’s a charismatic enough man who could get a ton of people into his cause. Aside from the brief scene in his short where he hands out the masks, we don’t get a sense of Adam’s ideology, or what he’s selling to the Faunus in order to gain momentum. Sienna seems more politically savvy than Adam, but we don’t see enough of the two to get meaningful distinctions in their approaches. That’s partially due to Sienna dying in her first scene (to this day I still think that was one of RWBY’s biggest mistakes), but also that Adam’s sparse appearances make it harder to understand what he’s thinking.
His use of Grimm masks is interesting to me. What does Adam think of the Grimm? Given we never see him take his mask off until late in the series, does he see the Grimm as a symbol of strength? That seems to be the implication given the masks are used by the White Fang as a fear tactic and how he doesn’t seem to have a problem working with Grimm to destroy Beacon, but how far does that go? Speaking of working with others, why did he think that working with Cinder and Roman, a bunch of humans, was a good idea to begin with? The latter is especially odd given Roman is a huge racist against Faunus. I’m surprised Adam never tried to gut him at all. Keep in mind that this team up happened before Blake left him, it was one of the reasons she was suspicious of him in fact. Adam is not exactly known for his pragmatism so something’s up here.
Looking back on Sienna’s death, that could have been the perfect opportunity for Adam to show what he’s made of. Imagine if Adam doesn’t kill Sienna right off the bat; she makes the same accusations, but Adam picks apart her words and build a case that she’s “gotten soft,” that she doesn’t understand how destroying an establishment where humans force faunus into working for them was an essential part of protecting the future of their kind. In an ironic turn around of her scene with Ghira, Adam turns the White Fang against her by making her pragmatism seem too centrist for their liking. Maybe Ilia is there too. Maybe she agrees with Adam openly, putting Sienna on the spot. Maybe Sienna retreats while Adam is cheered on by his fellow members.
But he doesn’t take the throne for himself, no that would be too convenient, plus it might stop him form acting in the field. He gets Ilia to do it instead.
Blake and Ilia worked under Adam. It’s implied that Adam had also manipulated Ilia on some level, which he could seize upon to make his grand take over of the White Fang. Adam could be on the frontlines attacking the humans while Ilia was in his control, which would also effectively pit her further against Blake.
But that’s just a hypothetical scenario. It’s easy to think of something like that in hindsight, when the volumes have been out for years. I just think that something along those lines could have helped sell Adam as a manipulative bastard who could convincingly pull off a take over of the White Fang.
Tumblr media
I feel that Adam is a fine enough character as depicted, just that there were some specific holes that could have been used to better flesh him out. I like him primarily as a phantom that Blake and Yang must overcome together, but it would have been nice to get a bit more insight into Adam’s motives and ideology.

So I thought I’d try something a little different (and slightly more fun than my usual saltiness) and do my own little personal ranking of Sanders Sides episodes!
Now I actually haven’t watched anything from the series for awhile so these rankings are going to be based purely on my own memories of each episode and how much I remember enjoying them. I’ll also be splitting the rankings up so I’ll do season one today and season two later on.
Eventually I want to go back and actually rewatch everything but I’ll probably wait until the season two finale comes out (whenever the heck that will be) but until then I think this will cover it.
Also important to note is that I will not be counting Asides in this since
1. I’m salty
 2. It’s not supposed to be Sanders Sides anyway so why include it?
and 3. I’m very salty.
Alright, let the ranking begin!
Dang, can you believe season one has seventeen episodes? Starting with My True Identity on October 19th, 2016 and ending with Accepting Anxiety on July 15th, 2017.
These episodes were a lot shorter too. The longest one, Growing Up, is only about 15 minutes long (14:39 to be exact because I already have the playlist pulled up to get all these references so I might as well use the info I have) and the shortest episode was Way Too Adult that barely makes it to the four minute mark. (Okay it’s 4:18 but that’s still closer to four)
It’s really interesting to see how much the series changed just throughout season one alone, especially once it shifts from just being a silly series of one shots to a series with more fleshed out characters and beginning to scratch the surface of dealing with heavier topics.
How did it do for me personally? Well if you made it this far I assume you actually want to know my opinion so I’ll go ahead and tell you...
For real now, let the ranking begin!
*cue drum roll*
#17 I'm in a Disney Show
Yeah this one is pretty forgettable, and it really sticks out like a sore thumb among the other episodes in this series since it’s based on something that happened in real Thomas’s life and later on they try to establish that Sanders Sides isn’t about real Thomas. Not only that there wasn’t much in this episode that stuck out as funny to me. The only bit I actually remember laughing at was when the Sides were throwing around click bait titles.
So yeah, boring episode, feels out of place, moving on.
#16 Becoming a Cartoon
Like with the last one this one is just very forgettable to me. It also features someone who turned out to be a pretty shitty person so I can’t even watch it without feeling uncomfortable.
The only thing I remember laughing at was Patton holding a potato.
#15 My True Identity
Okay I know it’s harsh putting the first episode so low on the list, especially when most of my problems with it stem from it being made before there were any intentions to make it a series, but like the first two it’s also kinda boring. I mean on it’s own it does a good job of introducing people to the basic idea of the series and gives an idea of what the characters are like, but they all basically act like the same person (yes I’m aware of the irony) with just one or two minor things to set them apart.
Can’t really hate this one like the other two since, again, this was made with no intention of plot or character development, so it’s only this low because it doesn’t really stick out to me. But hey, it did its job at getting people interested in the characters so in that aspect it did its job perfectly.
#14 Taking On Anxiety
Oh the second hand embarrassment in this episode is too much to bear. Honestly any episode that has Thomas interacting with someone from real life just feels so weird to me and takes me out of the episode. However, I do actually have a bit more positive things to say about this one. The advice they give is actually helpful, and my gosh I love pre-AA Virgil.
The snark, the sass, it’s easy to see why he became a fan favorite so fast. And fortunately for me, there’s plenty of episodes for me to love him in before I start to hate him.
#13 Way Too Adult
This is gonna sound repetitive but again, forgettable. Doesn’t give me second hand embarrassment or make me feel negative in any way so that’s why it’s higher than the others. And hey, 13 is one of my favorite numbers so that’s gotta count for something right?
The best part of this episode is Patton, I really miss the earlier version of him where he actually took on more of a fatherly figure and had more of a serious side. Not that I don’t like him now and I still think he’s one of the better written in the series (more on that in another post) but it’s kinda nice to see him being portrayed in a way that doesn’t feel like he’s being dumbed down for laughs or is just sad and confused.
#12 The Mind vs The Heart
Or as I like to call it “Selfishness vs Selflessness in Five Minutes.” This episode is way too relatable which is both fun but also I don’t need the reminder that I can’t say “no” to people, but that’s a me problem not the episode’s. I like the format of using cutaways to show examples of how Logan and Patton clash in Thomas’s day to day life and honestly I wish they’d use it more since I think they only do it in this episode and in Growing Up but I could be wrong and I’m too lazy to check.
All in all this a cute little episode (and not cute for the reason you might think) and I enjoy it.
#11 Accepting Anxiety Part One
Honestly not much to say about this one? It’s funny watching Thomas’s antics while the Sides have to try and figure out what’s going on. Which is a nice change of pace from the usual “The Sides are being goofy and zany and Thomas has to try and get them on track” that I kinda notice throughout season one and that starts to change to become the norm in season two, but I’ll get to that later.
Reason this one isn’t as high as others is just because besides that one gimmick of Thomas saying and doing silly stuff is that there isn’t much beyond that, and of course that’s just because this is the first part of a two part episode so I’ll give it grace for that. Still a great set up though and is funny on its own.
#10 The Dark Side of Disney
Alright, we’ve made it to the top 10! Here’s where things start to get interesting.
Personally, I find this episode hilarious because I do this kind of stuff to “kid’s films” all the time. Never to actual kids but to adults, it’s fun to see just how dark I’ll go.
Of course this isn’t really what the episode does, it talks more about the messages in these movies as opposed to talking about how “dark” they are. Which, now that I look back I clicked on this episode thinking that it was going to be a part of the latter and had no idea it was a Sanders Sides episode. Maybe that’s how I found the series? I always forget which episode was my first...
Back to the episode, it also establishes Virgil and Roman’s little dynamic of being rivals and I love it. They have some of the best exchanges in the series and it’s fun watching them go head to head here, and even bonding a little as well. All in all, fun episode that provides some good character moments and some laughs.
#9 A New Year of Lying to Myself... In Song!
Just the song, man. It slaps.
But am I the only one miffed that Virgil technically got a villain song (about lying no less) and Janus didn’t? Not even an evil reprise? Yeah that’s some bull spit right there.
#8 Growing Up
Aw, the first name reveal episode on this list! This episode is a lot of fun, mostly because of the scenarios they come up with and the little cutaways they add in. Seriously. Just use these more instead of going to these great lengths to show us something that can be accomplished in six seconds of footage.
It also has one of my favorite moments with Logan quietly asking Patton what they’re doing wrong after Thomas tries to force himself into the “serious adult role.” I really got a soft spot for this episode and honestly talking about it makes me wanna watch it again, but I’ll hold off for now.
And I think Patton has one of the best name reveals. Like Thomas really thought his name was Pattoncake, and Patton’s reaction is priceless. I still want to know what “Pattoncake” actually is and how it’s played, but part of me also accepts that it’s probably better if we never know.
#7 Making Some Changes
Why are Thomas’s friends so good at acting as Thomas acting as his characters? Seriously half the time when I watch this episode my brain doesn’t acknowledge that the Sides are now being played by different people until halfway through.
This episode is one of the funniest in my opinion, and one I remember coming back to a lot. Do I still want an episode where the Sides pretend to be each other? Yes. Do I know it’ll probably never happen and if it did they’d find some way to just make it full of angst? Yes, yes I do.
#6 Alone on Valentine's Day
The first episode to be officially cowritten by Joan, and it’s great. It’s hilarious, and just seeing all the varying ways each Side tries to portray their idea of romance is the cherry on top. What more can I say about this episode other than I’m curious as to what Janus and Remus would have contributed to a conversation like this, maybe they’ll do another episode like this in the future with their inclusion, but who knows what the heck they’re doing at this point.
#5 Sanders Sides Q&A
Top 5 here we go!!! This is when ranking started to get difficult because I love all of these episodes so much. Especially this one. I think I’ve watched this one more than any of them and why not? It’s just pure goofball shenanigans and seriously, Thomas, why haven’t you done another one yet? Especially with Janus and Remus?! I mean I get if you’re waiting for “all the characters” but come on man! I need more of the energy this episode gives off.
#4 My Negative Thinking
This episode made me realize just how underrated Logan and Virgil’s relationship is. It’s also the second entry in the “Logan Fights Everyone” saga. I do love how this episode has actually helped me with my own negative thinking and I just freaking love Virgil’s sass in this.
Did I mention I also love Logan and Virgil’s friendship? Ah, good times when they all more or less liked each other.
#3 Losing My Motivation
The set up of this episode is just brilliant. Having it be a “mystery” for Logan to solve with Patton as his sidekick provided a lot of laughs and one of my favorite Logan moments with his little bit he does after realizing he was the “culprit” in all of this. Ugh, I really wanna watch some of these episodes now but I’m gonna hold out.
One thing is that I feel like Logan got the short end of the stick with his name reveal. Like Patton just casually calls him by his name like it’s no big deal, yet pretty much all of the other names are revealed after some kind of emotional moment and are treated as a big deal. If Patton was comfortable enough to just call Logan by his actual name and Logan himself was fine with it then why didn’t any of them introduce themselves before? There’s not really an explanation within the series itself as to why this is or why the Sides even have names in the first place, like it makes sense why Virgil or Janus would hide their names but Logan, Roman, and Patton have been there since day one so what gives?
My personal headcanon is that the three of them had a bet going on to see how long they could go without calling each other by their names in front of Thomas and Patton lost because he forgot.
#2 Am I Original?
Look, Roman is my favorite so of course he’s up here! Not only that but this episode resonates with me a lot as a creative person, and I just love watching the Sides trying all the ideas Roman comes up with.
And his name reveal is also great, probably my favorite one, and of course it’s followed by the now infamous, “You’re my hero” line. But I’m just gonna ignore what became of that and focus on the fact that Roman was actually happy at the end of this episode.
#1 Accepting Anxiety Part Two
What can I say other than this was the perfect way to end this season? Virgil has been the outsider of the group since day one, and seeing him go from this snarky antagonist to gradually being tired with the role until he decides that it would be better if he just wasn’t around at all. This episode has some funny moments too, but what sticks out to me are the more emotional ones.
Roman’s entire speech to Virgil is just *cheff’s kiss* perfection. Their relationship has finally come full circle and when Virgil smiles at him? Ah it’s so good!!! Like the music, the acting, all of it comes together so perfectly and it makes my heart happy.
Virgil’s name reveal is also great, after being teased about it over and over again we finally get the real thing and it’s executed perfectly. Although my favorite thing about this episode is probably the end card, it’s so sweet and makes me all sentimental. Why? I dunno, I’m supposed to be heartless but I somehow find my heart melting when Patton gives Virgil the card anyway. Ah, I love Virgil’s relationships with the others by the end of this season, and honestly I would have been satisfied if this had been the end of it.
Just a neat little way to wrap up this neat little series.
Of course we all know that wasn’t the case and oh boy things certainly took a turn, but that is for another post!
And that was the first part of my ranking! Like I said this list might change once I go back and watch the series again, but I’m pretty sure things won’t change much then.
I’m actually surprised at how many happy memories I have with the season, like I seriously want to just go back and watch my favorite episodes again because I’m all up in the nostalgia but again, I’ll hold off for now.
I hope y’all enjoyed this and I’d be curious to see other people’s rankings of season one. I’m glad I was able to have fun with this and just gush about the series for awhile because oh boy I know things are gonna be very different once I get to season two...

Since rewatching the guardian drama after reading the novel has made me mad about how bad and good both of them are I am Obligated to write out a list of what I think the perfect merger btw both versions of canon are. This will be in list format otherwise I’ll end up writing like 6k words again.
TLDR: the genre stays as supernatural from the novel and not Sci fi, bc that was rlly not fleshed out well. Shen Wei is a ghost king, and all the dixingren are ghosts or demons like originally intended. The ghost race naturally exists and wasn't born from kunluns shoulder fire or anything. They just exist separate from humans. Not all ghosts are former humans, some people are just born as ghosts, like Shen Wei. Zhao Yunlan has the guardian whip and all the cool stuff that comes with the Guardian order.  Overall, i’d keep the novel’s plot and relationship progression and ending without the backstory. Instead the backstory is a merger of both canons. From the drama I’d keep the characterization and themes as well as like half the extra cases and omit the other half.
I’ll be elaborating much further on my ideal backstory and other stuff under the cut bc the rest is 1.5k and I don’t wanna clog the dash
Okay SO In my ideal backstory there are two timelines just like the drama but the mythology of the book. The god Kunlun is actually zyl that went back in time and became a god. But the one that went back isn’t the current Zhao Yunlan. There has to be an original timeline where the god Kunlun never existed. Thus the great seal nor the separation of the three realms don’t exist either. Zhao Yunlan must go back in time to become a god, meet Shen Wei in the past, and create the current timeline where the separation exists but isn’t perfect. The current timeline is the one that the majority of the series takes place in.
In the original timeline, Zhao Yunlan is just some dude living in a world where ghosts, fairies, and all other beings just live in a giant free for all and it's kinda just a mess.
Like there’s government in modern context and all and all races live with each other but there's constant tension. ZYL works at some equivalent of the SID (same staff and side characters, but novel vers. Lin Jing is a monk, CSZ a zombie, etc) to protect people and all that and their job is rather hard. One day encounters the thousands year old ghost king Wei (who isnt shen wei yet bc zyl gave him that name in the future) who works alone as like a rouge cultivator of sorts. He lives on the surface undercover as a professor still bc he’s trying to not catch Yezun’s attention but does all the stuff he normally does as Heipaoshi. The two ally together for a case and bc they both have the same goals of getting all races to live in peace. At current, there are forces working together to decimate the human race, all lead by Yezun
As they work together they become closer and all that. Shen Wei tells him about how he was unable to prevent the great war 5 thousand years ago and neither could the gods so  he’s spent the past 5 thousand years trying to make up for it. As they search for ways to stop Yezun, they gather the 4 hallows and learn how to use them to manipulate time so ZYL can go into the past and stop the great war and separate the three realms (living, dead, ghost).  Shen Wei wants to go back with him but he can’t because he was alive all those years ago so if he goes back it will create a paradox. ZYL promises he’ll find Shen Wei in the past and create a timeline where they could be together in peace (that is the current timeline)
When goes back he becomes the god kunlun because there needed to be a new god born at the time to prevent the war.  Also this time traveller looked promising to Nuwa, Fuxi, and Shennong. And I know in the guardian universe gods are usually born and ppl don’t become gods. EXCEPT this can happen when a god passes on smth from their body onto them bc that did happen in the novel with Kunlun making shen wei a demigod. And since fu you and ma gui are supposed to be gods Nu Wa and Fuxi I think that when they die, they should make ZYL a god and that's how this stuff happens.
So like ZYL explains to the gods the time he came from and how he wants to save everything and they make him a god and he works to save everything just like he did in the drama but this time with the novel plotline. During this time he meets young Shen Wei (he’s still like a hundred or so years old) and they get close and all the stuff from the backstory happens. He gives him his name, all that good stuff. The entire time doesn’t let him know that he’s from the future or that his real name is ZYL. He just poses as kunlun.
The two of them alongside the other gods (who still die at the times they do in the novel) work together to end the war and establish the great seal and set up the cycle of reincarnation, per the current timeline. Although the seal and cycle of reincarnation aren’t perfect. Gods can’t reincarnate, and ghosts still don’t have souls. And just like the novel, doing all of this kills ZYL bc it takes a lot of energy to create the seal even though it isn’t perfect.
Shen Wei of course doesn’t want ZYL to die and zyl says it's alright because he fixed the timeline so there must One day they will meet again and ZYL reveals the truth about the timeline to shen wei before he dies. This becomes the promise that Shen Wei mentions to meet again. Before he dies, ZYL gives him the shoulder fire as a memento ( i still like the candy wrapper necklace deal but i’ll take this too. Maybe both.. The pendant is still just rlly cool.. Gay ppl)
Shen Wei knows gods can’t enter the cycle of reincarnation and still makes the deal with Shennong to strip Kunlun of his godhood and let him reincarnate. This sets us into the novel timeline where isn’t allowed to meet any of zyl’s reincarnations before he becomes zyl otherwise he will die and also fuck up the timeline. The same 5 thousand years of pining still ensue bc Gay Ppl and i love making Shen Wei suffer but he doesn’t have the shrine room thing bc i think thats weird and yea.. Bad.
In the meantime Shen Wei does a lot of things mostly just protecting the great seal and working for Hell to keep the peace but still does other stuff. He still watches out for ZYL’s reincarnations but doesn’t do much besides make sure they don’t die a premature death. They meet again finally at the beginning of the series and the timeline resumes like canon. And that's my master plan that merges both drama logic and novel logic while making a much better timeline. (I hope that makes some sense)
Da Qing is still Kunlun’s pet cat and important. Novel backstory applies to him. And I already mentioned him kinda but as for Yezun (Gui Mian in the novel) his deal is similar as in the drama but just a ghost. And he is a big player in the great war, he thought Shen Wei abandoned him as a kid but they were just separated. Shen Wei doesn’t know it's him till the end of the war and couldn’t stop him in the OG timeline and vows to bring him to justice and make amends. Shen Wei continuously tries to explain things to him but he just won’t listen and is imprisoned in hell bc yk… war criminal stuff and yeah he’s the main antagonist trying to break the great seal bc he’s still made about the past. Idk. Yezun wasn’t well written in the novel OR the drama so like… honestly he just needs to be completely rewritten and I don’t care enough about that. He can just be a weak villain idk
the drama characterization stays the same for everyone else bc found family go brr. However for Lao Chu i… hmm… i think he should still be a zombie but the reason he killed someone should be related to his brother. I like that addition and then shen wei realized his sentence was unjust and exempted him. i like that storyline merger. bc the brother thing and him admiring Heipaoshi was drama only. in the novel lao chu just murdered some kid for a rlly whatever reason.
uhhh in terms of the cases… id make adjustments to most of them. i think the li qian case should be like the drama bc the novel just had her as a murderer and it was boring.
For the mountain river awl one was fine… novel version was funnier and more interesting action wise tbh… rip zyl and his exorbitant flirting. uhhh the whole reveal that shen wei was the soul reaper thing was kinda… ehh in the novel but i did love the comedy of afterwards Shen Wei pretending he went into cardiac arrest when he actually just… has no pulse bc he's a ghost.
ID KEEP THE WORTH IT SCENE AND RAIN SCENE… THOSE FUCK SO HARD… I love the drama for adding those every damn day. the novel version of zyl losing his sight sucked and was sooo boring.  Keep the drama version on that.
also id keep dr. cheng. i'm very pro dr. cheng and her friendship with shen wei it adds so much to his character imo. keep the fruit seller man and his wife for the merit brush..omg it adds SO MUCH the way the drama did it.. like the drams build up with the novels pace of that arc.. mwah. it felt like it dragged a bit in the drama but if it went faster and without the hospital ep and with sha ya (sorry sha ya) that would've been so good. tho keep novel version of da qings memory loss and lao li. that was rlly impactful.
id say keep some of the cases like the mirror one, the eyes doctor one, etc. just to like.. yk have more to fill in general.. novel pacing but drama characterization without the bs that wasn't fully realized. and novel ending ofc. And that’s it!!
I hope most of this makes some amount of sense  but it probably doesn’t. In my head it all tracks but like ik most of u don’t know anything about the novel so this sounds like gibberish. Also I know this would literally never happen but this is MY ideal merger of the two canons that I feel compelled to expand on for some reason. Anyways, as io said,, we need to rebuild guardian. Like literally let me and the mutuals write Guardian and it will be 500 times better.

None Of This Makes Sense - The Tenuous Reality Of The Markiplier Cinematic Universe (and maybe whats in the box)(big spoilers)
So i tried to make this post last night and then tumblr made a fucky-wucky all over itself and my post was lost as sacrifice to the hellsite. So I’m writing it again and saving it this time. This is gonna get really long, but I think I’m onto something here. @markiplier you aint gotta say shit but i hope you see this.
So I was watching the Wilford MOTHERLOVING Warfstache Full Breakdown last night, and Mark started saying some things about the Markiplier Cinematic Universe(MCU) that got the gears turning in my brain. He laid down some “rules” of this universe that I think are SO important to understanding Heist and the Box.
“The Viewer, in this universe... is a character. That’s something that cannot be... forgotten in anything that I do for these.”
The Viewer isn’t just a viewer, they’re a CHARACTER. These are distinctly different concepts. A viewer typically exists OUTSIDE the world of the medium. A CHARACTER, however, exists squarely within the medium, and I don’t think Mark means this like Oh Its First Person And You Make Choices And They Talk To You I think this expands to mean that the WAY we experience the videos is the way the other characters are experiencing what happens. Look at the Scientist video:
“Haven’t you two noticed time being funny lately?”
“You haven’t noticed things going unnaturally fast? Things happening out of order for one another? Strange coincidences? Bizarre memories of things you haven’t even done yet?”
Everything she mentions, we the viewer didn’t notice on our own because, to us, that’s just the way videos are. There’s time skips, edits, we have the ability to hop between videos. Without all this, videos would be unwatchable. The main thing here is that these qualities are not only experienced by us, but by all characters. We also see this in Wilford MOTHERLOVING Warfstache when the tazer transitions happen. Wilford notices a transition happened, but is so used to these weird events that he rolls with it. Noticing the edits and the confines of the story is what leads Abe to crack.
“[In SOMA] the main character thought he was human, in his mind. Reality SHAPED itself to be that thought, but on closer observation it turns out he was a machine when he looked in that mirror... What’s the truth and what’s the lie? That concept is very interesting to me.”
“Reality is not gelling, but his brain is making up why it makes sense.”
Mark likes the idea of characters battling with their perception of reality, and what reality IS. Mark says, in his explaination videos again and again, if it doesn’t happen on screen then it didn’t happen. I don’t think he’s just talking about death of the author here. I think, in his videos, this is the reality. I think this is very literal for the MCU. There is no appearence of the Detective between WKM and WMLW, and so there are no events that ACTUALLY happened.
“Its as if he was told what he needed to know, but not what it was that he knew. He knows the concept of what he needed to do, but if pressed for the details of it, it all falls apart.”
So why does this matter for Heist? Well, all of the MCU are strictly confined to whats on the screen. The expanse of the story is what is directly in front of us. We go bed in the back of the Jeep, and seconds later we wake up to Mark in an apron making us a camp breakfast. We ASSUME things happened in between, our brains roll with it and chuckle at the joke but we don’t question where any of this came from because its the nature of the medium. In the universe of the videos, though, NOTHING happened between those edits. We are told what must’ve happened, but the reality of it is there was NO time in between.
I think this starts to tell us what’s REALLY in the box, and I’ll go even further to posit that we’re told/shown whats in the box in 3 endings. Ending 6, Ending 16, and Ending 31.
In Ending 6, the Scientist identifies the box as the source of all the “anomalies” which are really just edits and the nature of the medium. Upon destroying it, we are shown, briefly, the entire map of A Heist With Markiplier, before showing up before the heist begins. Mark has no idea why we’re here, and instead of continuing into the heist again like in other time travel endings, he prompts us to go into A Date With Markiplier. Credits Roll. The Box was destroyed and the story never happens.
In Ending 16, we meet Wilford, the man himself, and he starts asking us how our adventure has been, across all the videos and endings. Wil is FULLY aware of the medium at this point, and how you play into it. He then says
“And if you need more time to think of your answer, feel free to pause time. I think your magic box is useful for something like that.”
and then the Youtube video pauses. This is more than a fun jape of “oh haha this is on a computer on the internet” cuz I don’t think Wil is referring in such knowledgeable terms about our computer/phone/tablet. I think he’s specifically referring to The Box. The Box gives us control, The Box lets us hit pause, and rewatch things, and watch multiple endings.
And finally Ending 31. Darkiplier meets us and talks to us. He acknowledges that its likely we’ve seen his monologue more times than he could know about, that Mark likes to spin stories for us. He thinks we’re trapped in the stories just like he is, so he gives us a code that leads us to the bloopers and behind the scenes. He pulls back the curtain for us, as if saying “look, this is all fake”
The Box contains A Heist With Markiplier. The Box IS the Story. THATS why it contains whatever the story needs it to. THATS why destroying it makes the heist never happen. THATS why it “gives” us control and messes with time; because it is literally all the videos, all the events that happen after stealing the box.
This is absolutely the kind of abstract concept nonsense Mark would pull, and I’m feeling confident about this. If you read all of this, please share your thoughts, i wanna flesh this out as much as possible. I feel this in my brain, but explaining it is like trying to explain the color yellow; I feel ill equipped.

Voyager Post-Show Books Read Order + Rewatch List
I’m lending my Voyager + some TNG books to my mom to read, and I sent her an email with this list that I made.  I thought it might be helpful for other people, (and also it’d be easier for me to find next time) if I posted it online somewhere.
First, it’s also a read order for the major books covering Voyager happenings plus a few TNG books that I also own for the same era.  It’s got all the major Voyager happenings in it, and a few TNG books that are optional, though most play into what’s happening with Voyager.
In reading the books, I found it was helpful to go back and rewatch certain episodes to do things like remember who the minor / guest characters were and their plots when they showed back up, or review some character arcs for the main characters, or just the overarching plots of episodes which the books referenced.
I also linked to their pages on Memory Alpha for easy referencing, but rewatching is better.
Unless otherwise marked, suggested episodes below are Voyager episodes.
Any episodes I put a * after I'd say is critical to understanding the book(s), otherwise it's just helpful.  I’m happy to add to this list if anyone has other suggestions.
Voyager - Homecoming - This book deals with the immediate aftermath of Voyager's Endgame (the series finale). This and the next book are a two-parter.  They're good but not great.  The Voyager books get much better starting with the fifth. Rewatch List - Non Sequitur (2x05) Hunters (4x15) Lineage (7x12)   Prophecy (7x14) * Author, Author (7x20) Endgame (the very last episode) *
Voyager - The Farther Shore - Part 2 of the above.
Voyager - Old Wounds - This and the next Voyager book are also a two-parter.  They are... okay.  The Voyager books get a new author after this and then they get really, really, really good. Rewatch List - Tattoo - (2x09) *  Nothing Human (5x08) TNG Journey's End (7x20) (Chakotay's people live on the planet Starfleet is trying to relocate in this TNG episode.)
Voyager - Enemy of My Enemy - Part 2 of the above.
TNG - Death in Winter -  Non-essential for Voyager.  This takes place shortly after the movie Nemesis and deals with Picard having to rebuild the crew.  This is maybe the worst of all the books I've read in this series, but one important thing does happen. Rewatch List - TNG Nemesis (the movie) * Eventually, you're going to want to rewatch the below episodes, I think it'd be useful to watch them before the following books.   TNG - The Best of Both Worlds 1 and 2 (3x26, 4x1) Voyager - The Q and The Grey (3x11) * Voyager - Scorpion Part 1  and 2 (3x26, 4x1)
TNG - Resistance - Moderately important for future Voyager stuff, skip if you want.  Most rewatch episodes were covered above.
TNG - Q&A -  Honestly, a rewatch list for Q&A would be every single episode with Q in it that hasn’t been touched on.  This is maybe my favorite of the TNG-only books on this list, but it’s not very important for the Voyager list.
Voyager - Full Circle - FIRST HALF ONLY!!! - There's a break in the middle of this book, with a timeskip in between.  ONLY READ THE FIRST HALF at this point if you’re doing an in-order read with TNG books as well.  If you don’t care about anything but explicitly Voyager books, skip down to #12 as Beyer does a good job of explaining what happens in the subsequent books between the two parts of Full Circle. This is also the book where Voyager starts becoming amazing.  The only bad thing about Kirsten Beyer's books is you'll be sad all the rest of the Star Trek books aren't as good as hers.   No watchlist as mostly the first half of the book is wrapping up the storylines from Christine Golden's first four Voyager books.
TNG - Before Dishonor - This is nearly as much a Voyager book as TNG.  This book is instrumental in understanding everything that happens afterwards.  I won’t get into my opinion about the book itself though because it’s not very flattering.  You probably want to read at least the first and last chapters, the rest is... skippable if you’re not enjoying it. If you haven't rewatched Voyager's The Q and the Grey and Endgame yet, you're really going to want to here.
TNG - Greater Than the Sum - Just started reading this one, I’ll update once I’m done. Yes, I’m reading some of these books very of out of order. :)  *edit* It was an improvement over Before Dishonor, I’d recommend reading as it does bridge into the next books.
TNG/VOY/DS9/More - Destiny Trilogy - (Gods of Night/Mere Mortals/Lost Souls - I bought them all as a collection)  This is a massive crossover event trilogy but next on my to-read list  I do know that characters from TNG, Voyager, DS9, Enterprise, plus Titan (Riker's ship) are all in it. I don't have a rewatch list but I'll make it as I get to reading it. *Edit* OK I’ve finished reading it. My opinion is that you should read this trilogy. Yes, it’s long, but also very worth it.  Probably my favorite non-Voyager books on this list.  There are only a couple of cameos of Voyager characters but they are meaningful, and Seven has a small storyline of her own, as does Tuvok (since he’s on the Titan serving under Riker.) The writing is very good, the story is great, and reading it massively increased my understanding of and investment in a major storyline throughout the rest of the Voyager books.  I also just really, really enjoyed it.  If you don’t want to read anything else not explicitly Voyager, I still rec you read this trilogy. Rewatch List Enterprise: Home (4x03)* Affliction (4x15) & Divergence (4x16)
Okay, now read the second half of Full Circle.  Cry a lot about it. Everything I talk about from here on out is just Voyager.
Unworthy -  The adventure finally re-begins! Rewatch List In The Flesh (5x04) Okay but maybe put off rewatching this episode after the climax of the books. Life Line (6x24) Homestead (7x23) TNG - Darmok (5x02)  (The new Voyager CMO is a Tamarian, though you can put off rewatching this until Acts of Contrition if you really want, the character doesn't get important til then.)
Children of the Storm - No rewatch list.
The Eternal Tide -  My FAVORITE of all the books. Rewatch List- Q2 (7x19) * The Gift (4x02) TNG True Q (6x06)
Protectors -  This and the next two books are their own trilogy, so the below episodes are for all three. Rewatch List - Twisted (2x06) Unity (3x17)   Counterpoint (5x10) Dragon's Teeth (6x07) Unimatrix Zero (6x24) and Part II (7x01) (If you haven't rewatched TNG - Darmok 5x02 yet, do that now)
Acts of Contrition
Atonement
A Pocket Full of Lies - Watch List - Year of Hell Parts 1 and 2 (4x08 and 09) * Shattered (7x11) *
Architects of Infinity - It’s been a couple of months since my first reads of these two books but I don’t recall any particular episodes jumping out as needed rewatches as I did.  Let me know if you think I’m wrong and I’ll update the list.

a jumbled mess of my thoughts about voltron
This’ll probably be the messiest post you’ll ever read. I’m done trying to finish this and edit it into something coherent, so I’m just combining the 3 drafts I have written out into one massive post. I doubt anyone will read this whole thing, but each draft is a sort of rewrite of the last, so there’s a lot of overlap. But there’s also a lot of new thoughts too as I kept thinking about this. There’s also a lot of unfinished thoughts.
There’s mostly negativity in this btw. This fandom had/has an amazing ability in making you think that this show was utter garbage. on par with riv//erdale or s//pn, but it really wasn’t. Like many shows they had weak points, it was never perfect, but it’s much better than we’re told to remember it as.
Intro from Draft 3 because I liked the way I started it:
This is all of my thoughts about Voltron, the show itself and the fandom. I have tried to write this post out for over a year or two now, so it was originally intended to be my final thoughts about the show. Obviously, it’s evolved since then into whatever this is. There may be some things that I’ll be wrong about, because I’m not about to dig through hundreds of discourse posts and old interview videos to prove a point that I doubt anyone’s gonna care about. This will 100% be based on my thoughts, opinions, and experiences.
That said, I don’t even know how to begin to describe how much I love this show. I’m probably one of the few people who have no regrets about enjoying this show as much as I do. I’d wholeheartedly recommend watching it, because it’s genuinely a good show. Voltron did the unimaginable for me. I don’t usually enjoy sci-fi stories. I especially don’t enjoy mecha stories. Yet somehow, Voltron combined the two and made a show that I loved so much I can’t stop thinking about it even though it ended over 2 years ago.
Draft 1: thoughts about a year after it ended without rewatching any seasons since it ended
It’s been about a year since voltron ended. I never wrote my thoughts about s8/the show then so here it is now. Because I decided to wait a year I honestly don’t remember a lot of specifics. But I still have a lot to say about it. This is very long and is basically everything I have to say about this show. I love voltron. It’s been an important part of my life during college. 90% of all papers I wrote were about voltron. But as much as I love it, I won’t deny that it fell apart at the end.
Note: I tried to categorize these thoughts so I don’t get off topic and can talk about everything fully. But because they overlap so much there’s definitely some minor repeats when I connect two parts but decided to hold off talking about it all the way until the right section.
PRODUCTION
This is something I’ve expressed concern over while it was airing, but in a span of 2 and a half years, they premiered 78 episodes. That’s a lot, especially when you consider that production for s3 started after s1 premiered. There’s a lot of really good voltron review videos out there that aren’t just “oh I’m so cool I hate voltron” but there was one that talked about how the production was a mess and the writers couldn’t make up their mind for the endgame ship. And while that doesn’t sound like an important issue, it really does show when it comes to how characters are written together and (I think) the fandom war.
Summarizing what that video said because I don’t remember who made it, the writers/producers never made up their mind on which ship was supposed to be endgame (klance, sheith, allurance, kallura). And this really does show in the show itself. I don’t like klance. I especially hate it because of my experience with the fandom, but I won’t deny that they were sometimes written romantically. The same goes for sheith. And that’s the problem.
I don’t think the world building parts of the show was fully developed either. Shiro was supposed to be a teen like everyone else but then he was an adult. His and keith’s relationship was honestly vague for a good while. I don’t think anyone really knew how each characters’ relationships with each other was supposed to progress. Was allurance always supposed to be endgame? Because they didn’t really interact that much until like season 6, and then it was kinda sudden from what I remember. There was very little, if at all, parts where we were shown oh allura might like lance romantically. Keith’s relationship with the main cast didn’t exist for like 3 seasons. It was messy.
Speaking of which, keith disappeared for a good portion of the show. I assume it’s because steven yeun was busy. Which is fine but then I think about how quickly voltron came and went, I wonder why they couldn’t slow down a bit so they could still have steven voice keith during those episodes. Maybe it’s because of how much I love keith, but he honestly felt like a central character to me.
If I think about teen titans, for example, this show also had 5 main characters. Sometimes certain characters would get a spotlight for a season, but all-in-all they were fairly equally represented. It didn’t feel like robin was the main character. But that’s how I feel about voltron. Keith, and shiro to an extent are the main characters. A good portion of the plot relies on them. Shiro got kidnapped, keith leads them to the blue lion. Shiro is the leader with keith has his right-hand man and they mostly interact with each other. So when shiro “dies” and keith takes over, it starts to feel like keith is now the main character. Now he’s the leader and the arc is about him growing into becoming the black paladin and stopping lotor, who is his main enemy. But then he disappears.
Again this is most likely because of my bias towards keith, but the episodes after that felt lackluster. Lance didn’t really get his character growth to become a good second-in-command. Because that development was supposed to be based around keith. :P. A big part of lance’s growth is to learn to stop needing to feel that he’s better than keith. And him accepting keith as the black paladin was a huge part of it. But with shiro as the leader again lance loses that development. Keith’s not in the picture anymore, and the person in-charge was already in a leadership position and has nothing to learn by being there.
Before I go way too deep into my thoughts about the plot/characterization, I do want to mention the animation. The fighting scenes are amazing and one of the most beautiful 2d animation I’ve seen. That is, when it is actually animated and not just the camera panning on a still image. Here’s where my biggest concern over the time comes in. 2 years is absolutely not enough time to animate that many episodes. I was genuinely worried for the animation company because it could not have been a good experience. And yes, we got more episodes sooner, the quality definitely dropped and it’s a real shame. Who knows when we’ll get another american cartoon in this style. I love this animation style but it takes time and a lot of skills to do, so not that many companies do it. I honestly wished they took their time with the show not just to get more time to animate, but also to flesh out some of the plot.
PLOT
As hunk said in one episode, they don’t linger on dramatic events that just happened. This show is very fast paced, and that’s not a bad thing. But they never took the time they needed to really feel the weight of everything that happens. Keith’s galra heritage reveal was basically swept under the rug. So was the shiro clone, lotor’s death, zarkon’s death, naxzela, and so many more. In general, that was a big problem with how the episodes went. If it wasn’t for the sheer number of fanfics covering those topics, they were really swept under the rug. It honestly kinda felt like the writers didn’t know what to do with the aftermath of their reveals. But some of these were pretty essential to the plot of the story.
Keith’s part galra! So he doesn’t look it but there had to be obstacles with voltron forming the coalition. He’s part of the race that caused this war. I honestly think we should’ve seen that reveal become part of the plot, or what was the point of it? They could’ve just as easily wrote keith to be a regular human just like everyone else. Taking the time to add that part of his character needs to have some significance in the story. And yeah, they had krolia appear but she wasn’t really a significant character except to kinda magically fix keith’s problems. In general it felt like they forgot parts that they were foreshadowing with keith. Why could he turn purple sometimes? Did that quintessence he was hit with fix him or help him hide the galra parts? Why does he look so human? What is up with him having that quintessence sensitivity? I’m all for shows ending with some questions unanswered because sometimes it’s impossible to answer it all and let it feel natural, but this just felt like they forgot or decided it’s too much of a hassle and just ignored it.
Okay going into more specifics now, s8 was kinda meh. It especially felt bad because it came out the same day as spiderverse which had a very similar villain motivation, but objectively done better. I think honerva’s motivation came out of nowhere. We see in the flashback episode that she was so intent on getting knowledge that it literally destroyed daibazaal. So, it was established that her motivation is knowledge. Even though she lost her memory and regained it, as haggar she was still very focused on quintessence. We know she was gathering a lot of it, and maybe they said it and I forgot, but we never knew why. Family wasn’t really shown as a motivation for her. Even with lotor it didn’t seem like she wanted to be a family again, but instead was using him for her own unknown motivations. Anyways, the season felt awkward. And the new dynamic they had really needed more time. The last season should’ve expanded to be at least 2 more. It would’ve fit a lot better imo. S1-2 would have zarkon as the main villain, s3-6 would have lotor, and s7-8 would have haggar, who was also the puppeteer throughout the entire show. But she didn’t appear for s7 and her motivations didn’t really make sense in s8 so it evidently felt rushed. There were also so many major characters in s8 we needed more time to see them interact.
So the ending with allura becoming constellations. Gonna be honest that whole last part had me confused. Especially with the fact that I barely remember what happened, why are the old paladins like trapped in the lions? I could excuse the other 4 but zarkon? Especially a zarkon that’s not corrupted? It was weird and didn’t make a whole lot of sense, and that’s all I’ll say about that. I don’t even want to try to suggest an alternative because I think that whole last half of the season is so messy it can’t be fixed. But it was so obviously pandering to the fandom it hurt. Lance getting those marks was so obviously referencing when people wanted lance to be altean in response to keith’s galra heritage. The shiro/curtis kiss was very “look see he is gay and not just because we said so” while nice, was very weak (why wasn’t keith in the shot?).
Despite my complaints, I remember liking s8. I really liked the addition of the atlas, even though it didn’t feel like we were watching voltron anymore sometimes. S7 had to be one of my favorite episodes since s2. Not to say that s7 is better or worse, but I really like it because it felt like a genre shift. I usually don’t like space sci-fi or mecha stories. Voltron somehow managed to combine the two and make me love it. S7 did not feel like either of those. First, a good half of it took place on earth. And I believe two episodes didn’t even have the main cast, and when team voltron finally made it to earth, voltron wasn’t even there until the final battle. I genuinely loved it. I think it was a very well done invasion/apocalyptic story that doesn’t get told in animation that often. But if I think about s7 with the rest of the show, it was awful. It broke up the tone the show usually had and it was a very different way of storytelling that voltron didn’t have before. It wasn’t a space sci-fi mecha story, it was an apocalyptic action story. Voltron was so unimportant they sat on a moon for episodes. It stopped becoming voltron and started becoming a spin-off.
I do have to add that I absolutely loved the color themes in s7. We already had purple for the galra, but in s7 it was very obvious that alteans are themed blue and earth is themed with orange. I loved it so much and it was great. I do like that they gave shiro something to do. Honestly not killing him off in s2 made him an awkward character afterwards. But I didn’t like that they brought back sendak. There was no explanation for it and it wasn’t good imo. He didn’t really do anything besides conquer earth then die. Haggar was also absent the entire season which definitely didn’t help her storyline in s8 because we didn’t know what she was doing the entire time except abandoning everyone who was loyal to her.
I’m usually not a fan of time skips, it has the tendency to gloss over character development or create glossed over recap. Honestly I wish voltron spent more time over the blade of marmora massacre or just the bom in general. They received no rest. Literally everyone part of that group died except for kolivan. Speaking of that episode, there was no explanation for how keith was able to know where macidus was about to appear and that honestly bugs me. There’s so much about keith we don’t know. He has so many abilities we were just never told.
Again a lot of problems within team voltron is that there was never any follow up on things that happened, like keith leaving the team. He becomes the black paladin and no one bats an eye. Lance did make one comment about keith leaving but then it wasn’t ever mentioned again. I get that the writers/producers wanted the dynamic the original had, but they didn’t take the time to work up to it. Keith wasn’t a natural leader, but he suddenly is because he spent 2 years on a space whale with his mom and a space wolf. Like I mentioned earlier, voltron feels like keith is the main character but then they dropped him for a few episodes, realized that he’s important and added him back in while saying “oh he went through a time skip so he grew into the role he needs to be in now”. It feels like a cheap pay off.
I’d like to specifically talk about my thoughts on each season and work back but honestly I don’t think I can remember s3-6 separately. So they’re being chunked together.
Lotor had the potential to be a really great villain. But he had to be foiled with keith. They have a lot of similarities that I think could’ve really played off well together. Lotor isn’t really allowed to have a leadership position. Yeah he was technically in charge while zarkon was recovering, but haggar didn’t really allow him full control. But, he was a great leader. He knew how to read his enemies and form an alliance. Meanwhile, keith had a leadership position thrusted to him, and frankly he wasn’t a good leader. He tends to keep to himself so he never really has to make decisions with a team. It could’ve been great, but shiro had to still be in the story. I’m honestly conflicted about this because on the one hand, I think it really ruined character developments for the main cast, but then I loved the clone shiro plot line. I think keeping shiro prevented keith from growing. He was able to remain dependent on shiro instead of actually bonding with the rest of the paladins. And of course he had to just go awol. Also, lance didn’t really get to have as prominent of a role as I think he could’ve had with keith.
These seasons are also when the lions stopped being sentient robots that specifically choose their paladins to just really cool spaceships. We don’t get that level of bonding that was so prominent in s1 and 2. That’s also something I’m conflicted with. I think the lion swap was a great way for character developments, but it also removed a lot of it. It kinda made the bonding feel useless. The swap also changed the dynamic of the group. Instead of shiro and allura being co-leaders, and everyone else feeling like they’re on equal footing, it felt like Keith was the leader with lance being a needed right-hand man. Hunk and pidge were off doing their thing and allura was a leader but also not. Maybe if they had spent more time working with this dynamic it would’ve felt better. But they didn’t and it didn’t. Voltron also implied that allura was the only one that could control the castle ship, but then she goes to become a paladin and who’s driving the ship?
I do wish we could’ve gotten more about the altean colony and the reveal about lotor’s plans, but that got overshadowed and forgotten by the clone shiro reveal. Maybe I just missed it, but I wasn’t sure what the galra empire and lotor were collecting quintessence for. Was it just to make mechs to rival voltron? Lotor’s death was also very unclear.
The coalition was a much needed thing, but I think very badly executed. They were gathering people from malls. These people are regular civilians who probably don’t know how to fight or fly a ship. I thought it was really weird that they were just getting regular people (aliens?) to sign up like they’re applying to be part of the army. But we never see them maybe join the rebel force matt is part of to learn how exactly to help. I think about avatar and how they also had a rag tag group of people to fight against the fire nation, but these weren’t just regular people living in a village. They were either warriors or very skilled benders. The voltron coalition was just regular people. That genuinely annoyed me because the voltron show just felt like those army propaganda ads, but exciting. Not to mention it was a very hard to watch episode.
It was definitely making fun of how the fandom complains about how characters are getting reduced to a certain characteristic. But it wasn’t done in an entertaining way like the ember island players episode from atla because some of those were legit complaints (like hunk being the fat/food guy) and that stuff wasn’t resolved. Like the ember island players made fun of sokka constantly talking about meat or katara crying all the time, but the show made it very clear beforehand that these characters are much more than that. Is hunk really more than the food guy? As far as the show mentions, the only things he’s done was make the machine to help find the blue lion, and help save the balmera. All of which was in season 1. After that hunk honestly took the backseat in voltron.
I mentioned earlier, but the time skip on the space whale felt like we were cheated out of keith’s character development. I mean we got development, but we didn’t get to see it. The vlog short showed that keith believes a lot of his problems stems from not having a mom (and a dad) in his life. But instead of seeing keith learning to trust and open up to people despite having so many people in his life leaving him, we get a cute montage of him with his mom. As if it makes sense that two years with his mom would fix everything. (side note, I know a lot of people were saying how obvious it was that krolia was keith’s mom, I genuinely did not know until she said so at the end of that episode).
I’m not gonna talk about my thoughts on s1 and 2 because I’m pretty sure I live blogged those and honestly I don’t think I remember it.
CHARACTERS
Now I’m finally talking about the characters and I’m starting off with keith as if I haven’t talked about him enough already. I love keith. He’s undeniably one of my (if not the) favorite characters ever. And he’s obviously a fandom favorite if we’re considering the two biggest ships in the fandom. Or maybe he really is just the secret main character of voltron. We know so much about him, for someone who loves keith, it’s great. We basically know his entire backstory, and yet we know no one else’s (except maybe lotor but even that’s iffy).
I never rewatched a single voltron episode since it ended, and I can’t watch any of the connected shows (meaning shows that have the same ppl that worked on it or the same fans, think dragon prince and she-ra) because the fandom was the absolute worst one I’ve ever been in and parts legit trigger me. I am fascinated with fandoms. I love it. I chose my major because it was the closest I could get to just learning about them 24/7. But the voltron fandom was so incredibly toxic and over two ships? Honestly the fandom itself was a major reason why I couldn’t get super invested in the later seasons. I get afraid when it seems like a certain ship might happen. I actually hoped that certain characters just didn’t interact. (I’m not gonna get much deeper in this because I don’t want to touch this topic with a ten-foot pole, at least not now) Aside from that, I think that the plot and characterizations for voltron got really messy post s2. The lion switch was never handled well imo, and post switch the lions lost that sentient personality that was established in the first two seasons. It also didn’t make sense aside from the writers wanted everyone in the original lions. Or at least, we never got the proper character developments into those roles. Keith left right after becoming the black paladin.
I think another major problem with the show is how some decisions felt like pandering. I remember hearing that they didn’t kill off shiro because he was a fan favorite, so he had to stay for marketing and to make more money. But then keeping shiro alive would’ve derailed the original plot idea. I wish I could see how the story would’ve played out with shiro staying dead.
Draft 2: rewatched the show then started writing this
So I wrote a draft of this like a year ago, realized I don’t remember the show much, so I rewatched the whole show and started rewriting my thoughts.
Pre-rewatch thoughts: It was a good show that was poorly executed
Mid-rewatch thoughts: it’s a really good show that just has some weak points (the second half of lotor’s arc, team voltron’s importance in season 4-6 it feels like a lot of filler episodes until keith shows up again)
End-rewatch thoughts: it's actually a really good show. It has some weak points and some really strong points. Season 8 was confusing though. I went through most of it going yeah okay I guess that can happen.
Final verdict: it's a genuinely good show
What went wrong
It ended on its weakest season, which was also the most abstract and different season. While the main antagonist changed throughout the seasons, it still continued to be the galra empire. Even when lotor joined, the team was still fighting fractions of the galra empire. Meanwhile, season 8 didn’t have any conflict with the galra. The antagonists were honerva and the alteans, who are very different types of villains compared to the galra. There was also little build up to that change. Sure, we got to experience that briefly in season 3 when they went to the alternate reality, but I don’t think that was built up well. Also, the protagonists and the audience are just not prepared. We don’t know how the alteans work like the extent of their abilities, but we were given dozens of episodes to learn about the galra. As a result season 8 just wound up with me feeling confused and thinking “uhh sure I guess they can do that, that makes sense maybe?”
It could not pick who its protagonist is. Yeah the five humans plus allura (and coran?) are the main characters but most shows with multiple major characters still focus one one character as the protagonist. Like atla has aang, adventure time has finn, umbrella academy has five. Voltron just never picks someone and the group constantly changes too, so you end up having to not focus on any character for the sake of time. Of course not all shows do that. Teen Titans had each season focus on a particular member of the team, and tbh I was wondering if that was what they were planning for the show, especially when season 2 was so Keith focused but guess not.
It feels like they did not have the time to fully flesh out the story. Voltron came and went so incredibly fast. They had 8 seasons (technically 6 if you group up the halved seasons). But also the show only lasted 2 years. It honestly horrifies me to think of the time crunch everyone on the team was going through, especially the animators. You can see the drop in quality as there were very few scenes that involved actual animation for the middle bulk of the show. So then, how much time did they have to develop the story, in addition to execs telling them what they can and can’t do. There’s so many arcs that seemed to start then get forgotten, and I don’t blame the writers for that at all. Although I wish we could’ve learned more about Lance and the Altean sword and Keith with his apparent quintessence sensitivity, they probably just didn’t have the time to plot those out.
It had too much outside influence. Such as, the writers wanting to kill off shiro, but then being forced to keep him on the show because the execs said to. And honestly, the fandom. For example, the whole last episode with Lance getting the Altean marks (an obvious omage to ppl wanting Altean Lance).
What went right
There’s a reason why the show became so popular (aside from being a reboot of a popular 80′s show) and it’s because of the characters. I’m not about the whole “we become attached to characters because the writers did them wrong but we fans can see the potential and that’s why fan works are better” bs that I see going around this site all the time. The first season particularly wrote these characters so well. They’re relatable but also intriguing enough for you to care about what’s going to happen to them.
Some thoughts regarding popular fandom discussions:
It’s a plot-driven show with character-focused fans
I like to think of there being two ways to tell a story: by being character-focused or plot-driven. Plot driven shows are ones like atla, young justice, legend of korra, etc. There’s a conflict that gets introduced and the story revolves around that conflict. Character-focused shows are ones like adventure time or we bare bears, they’re less concerned about a plot line and focus more on the characters interacting with their world. Of course all stories incorporate both parts, just some focus more on one than the other. So, here’s where I think a lot of the issues about voltron and the fandom comes from. Voltron is a very obviously plot-driven show but the fandom is very character-focused. I won’t deny I loved the episodes about keith. Season 4 and 5 were hard for me to watch because I missed my boy. But that’s where the arguments come from. People get upset that their fav isn’t in the spotlight
It didn’t queerbait
I understand watching a show for representation, I really do, but voltron is not that show and that's okay. Not every show has to be revolutionary in its representation of marginalized people. I won't pretend to know the harmful tropes for marginalized people. My consumption of media is not usually diverse. But I will stand by my stance that a large part of voltron's later seasons is about the casualties of war. So of course a lot of people died. I also firmly believe that the producers had a much easier time adding diversity to their own created characters than the main voltron characters, because of rights and all that complicated nonsense. So as a result the ones who were more expendable and could die were also the same characters that they could add diversity too.
I’m gonna add the definition of queerbait here so we’re all on the same page:  Queerbait is a marketing technique for fiction and entertainment in which creators hint at, but then do not actually depict, same-sex romance or other LGBTQ representation.
But here’s the thing. We were told at comic-con or one of those cons that Shiro is gay, and he had a boyfriend. They actually gave us that. Yeah it wasn’t as explicit as She-ra got, but that’s another point for later. There was no lying about it. Shiro is canonically gay, and his boyfriend was Adam. If anything, this whole thing came out of wanting Keith in a relationship with Shiro or Lance. Yes. I will admit, there are plenty of scenes between Keith and Lance, and Keith and Shiro that can be read as romantic. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but did any of the cast members tease the possibility of Kl//ance or Sh//eith (VAs don’t count, sorry but they don’t really have a say in the story)? Because unless they did, and they did repeatedly, the fandom queerbaited themselves. So many people in the fandom were so certain that Keith would be in a relationship with one of them, there was basically an all out war. Even if there was a chance, did you really think the creators (who were pretty active in early fandom days) would continue that development? It was so so toxic they were forced to shut off any possibilities of that.
In regards to minority characters
Again, I'll admit vld is not the place to go for real, proper representation. Their characters tend to be characters that happen to be a part of a minority rather than a minority character. wtf does that mean? Well, you can swap (earth) races for just about any character and it wouldn't make too much of a difference in how they act. There's some lines that wouldn't work like Lance's "I'm just a boy from Cuba" but other than that there would be no significant change. Of course this goes down to preference. Would you want a minority character whose struggles reflect those in real life and as a result be defined by that aspect of themselves, or do you want a character that just happens to be a part of a minority group but whose life is not really affected by that?
Draft 3: months after the rewatch, mostly an attempt to reorganize the previous two drafts
I’m gonna start with the negatives just to get the ranting off my chest. Season 8 was bad. Yeah. No argument there. Although I wouldn’t say it was bad in the same way Game of Thrones and Supernatural was bad. Rather, it was an interesting and complex premise that didn’t have the build up it needed and honestly needed a few more passthroughs to iron out some parts. At worse, I felt it was confusing to the point where I just accepted whatever new worldbuilding thing they threw at me. The issue with Season 8 vs Seasons 1-7 is that Season 8 had a completely different villain, and a brand new cast dynamic. We got 7 seasons (65 episodes) developing the Galra as the villain. We got to learn who they are, their motives, how they operate, etc. Not only that, but they were pretty basic and easy to understand villains. They’re conquerors. They don’t have any sort of magic, they really just use brute force to attack and enslave the planets. In striking contrast, the Alteans in Season 8 weren’t conquerors. They didn’t care about controlling the universe. They also had magic abilities that our main characters don’t understand and didn’t explore. Season 8 had villains who could create illusions, mind control, and manipulate quintessence. The Alteans are leagues beyond the Galra in terms of complexities as an antagonist, but they didn’t get nearly enough time to be fully developed.
Also, Season 8 essentially doubled the cast size. So despite the fact that we have yet to see much of Keith-as-the-black-paladin Voltron group dynamic, now that screentime is being balanced with the MFE pilots and other Garrison characters. Essentially, there were too many characters, and too little time to flesh out the ideas of this season. A side note, Haggar’s (Honerva?) motivations were lame. I think it would’ve been much more interesting if her plans were just to continue the research she did 10,000 years ago with the rift. That would’ve also brought back the rift monsters which we never got an answer for. What even are they? Instead, her goal to have a family again is really weak. Even in the flashbacks she never showed any care for the more familial aspects of her life. It didn’t make sense for that to be her drive. It also didn’t help that Season 8 came out on like the same day as Spiderverse and the antagonists for both had the same goal, but Spiderverse did an immensely better job.
Another thing that didn’t make sense to me was Keith giving the speech to the rest of the Galra. He is not the right character to give that speech. Sure he’s Galra, but he didn’t even know for most of his life. For him to say “we” like he’s also a citizen of the Galra empire feels so weird. He never grew up with the Empire’s influence, and we never saw him experiencing Galra culture with the Blade. He learned about the Galra as an outsider, and despite the fact that he’s part Galra (he doesn’t even remotely look Galra), I don’t think that gives him the authority to say a speech like that. The speech is similar to Zuko’s at the end of ATLA, and that makes me feel like it would’ve been a lot better had Lotor said it. I think even Kolivan would’ve been a better fit than Keith.
The more I’m writing about Season 8, the more I’m remembering just how messy and confusing it was. Additionally, the last bit of Season 8 was so obviously pandering to the fandom it gives me second-hand embarrassment. Lance getting those marks was so obviously referencing when people wanted Lance to be Altean in response to Keith's galra heritage. The Shiro getting married was just to make it more obvious that he’s gay, but had no build up. (There were definitely more but I didn’t write myself a list and I’m not rewatching that season)
Second, “Voltron queerbaited”. [this was posted before here]
Speaking of which, Voltron premiered summer of 2016 and ended in winter of 2018. That’s about 2 and a half years where they aired 78 episodes. That’s stupid fast, especially for an animated series. I’m constantly worried about what the people working on that show had to endure. For sure, Season 3 with Shiro coming back wasn’t written until at least Season 1. I recalled the execs demanding that Shiro not be dead since he was a popular character. It’s honestly concerning how little time they had to work on the show, and it unfortunately showed. In the later seasons, a lot of the shots were just still frames that moved across the scene. And the plot line with Lotor could’ve used some work. Although, I think Shiro being forced in there was also a reason for it being so shaky.
I honestly hate Seasons 4 & 5. I cannot tell you what happened because my brain keeps erasing it. Obviously, the lack of Keith had a huge impact on my opinion of those seasons, but it also felt like a whole lot of filler episodes, and not the fun ones with character development. With Keith mostly out of the picture, and Lance becoming the right hand of Voltron, that should’ve been a great time to develop Lance to become a second-in-command. To have him go through an arc where he overcomes his insecurities. It would’ve also been an amazing time to develop his and Shiro’s relationship. But we didn’t get any of that.
I genuinely believe Keith was supposed to stay the black paladin and Shiro wasn’t supposed to come back. Keith would be an amazing foil to Lotor. They’re both half-Galra. They’ve both been given a new leadership role that they don’t want. The middle arc always felt so weak to me, and as I mentioned earlier, the Allura/Lotor interactions were awkward. It feels shoehorned in because someone has to interact with Lotor and I guess the writers decided Allura was the best option?
Season 3-6 felt like the epitome of what happens when showrunners are forced to do whatever the execs say and have no time to properly develop their story. I’ll forever be bitter at all the character and relationship development we lost because of that. We never got to see Keith really learn to open up to the team and start to trust others. But Keith still had to get to that point, which is why I assume they had the time jump for him. It’s so disappointing because we lost what could’ve been a great character development. It also made Keith being the Black Paladin again feel cheap. We didn’t get to see the struggle he had to be the leader Shiro saw he could be. He was just suddenly leading them and they worked like a proper team.
Voltron also had a lot of plot holes. Now, I don’t expect shows to answer every question, because it’s impossible to tie everything up and leave no questions unanswered in a natural way. But, there’s a lot of things that felt like the beginning of a plot line or honestly needed some answers. Like, Lance shifting his bayard to a sword. What was the point of that if it was never mentioned again? It felt like that was an important start to an arc for him that just got forgotten. Also, what was up with Keith’s quintessence sensitivity? How was he able to sense where that druid was. How did he know he could summon his bayard to him. I think the part that bugged me the most was that Keith was the only one who did that. Also, Keith’s eyes becoming slitted during his fight with Kuron was never addressed, and I really wish it was. It felt like such a throwaway moment that could’ve been interesting to explore more. Although I’m not too upset with that one as I think we were given enough to piece together a reason for it.

Wife’s Hilda Rewatch - The Midnight Giant
I hereby declare this session of my rewatch open. And I’d like to begin it with a matter of utmost importance
Tumblr media
Woff migration. How does it work? Do they go to warmer places in winter? Or maybe they have such warm fur that they go to colder places in summer? More at seven.
“Wouldn’t you like to have some other kids to talk to?” “I have myself to talk to! And Twig!” Like. Wow, Hilda is really out there being a whole mood during the quarantine. Me too, Hilda. Me too.
Can we talk about how this girl literally jumped out of her window, climbed the darn roof and jumped onto a flying woff? The heck kind of military training did Johanna give her child?! I don’t think you learn those things simply from living in the wilderness. I don’t think you should, at least. But maybe that’s just me.
Also, the Midnight Giant was so unbothered by her, it’s kind of hilarious. Like, yeah, this human just jumped from a woff onto my head, and now she’s literally whispering inside my ear, but no prob, I’ll just politely answer her questions like one does. What an icon.
Tumblr media
And today’s bi characters of the day is: the sky. The colours are bad in my picture but I swear the sky is the bi flag in this scene, which is very cool and I wanted to point it out.
Knowing Hilda I shouldn’t be surprised, but I still can’t believe that she actually fell asleep in the giant’s ear. I mean, he is an enormous creature that she has just met, and she feels safe enough to fall asleep in his ear. How many heart attacks per week do you guys think Johanna has?
Very sweet of the giant to drop Hilda off at her house, btw. He is a cool dude. A valid guy.
It will never not be funny to me how judgy Hilda is of the school’s playground. She’s so suspicious about it look at her
Tumblr media
You promised your mother you’d keep an open mind, Hilda. Don’t be like that.
Also also also, I’d like to point out Frida and David in this scene
Tumblr media
Frida is so excited about the book she’s showing David!! This is so pure!!! I wonder what it is about
The whole- the whole scene with Woodman when they arrive back at their home is gold, okay? I can’t even pick a favorite line. It’s all amazing. Johanna complaining about him, him saying he’s not part of the family, all of it. Woodman, don’t ever change.
Hey y’all, where did Woodman buy his disks? Where did he buy his books? It can’t all be from gambling with elves. Does he just go for a shopping day in Trollberg? I can’t imagine being a retail worker and then one day this little dude made of wood with a floating head and no eyes shows up wanting to buy, idk, a new couch or something.
...did he steal those things? Until I know all the facts, I will think this is a possibility.
Did anyone else think that this summoning young giants to watch over the Earth for millennia is kind of... dictatorial? Not a very nice move to order someone to sit on the top of a mountain for so long. Besides, humankind is perfectly capable of causing problems to itself without threats coming from above, thank you very much.
Tumblr media
Top ten pictures taken before disaster lol
Is it just me or Alfur freaking out when Hilda flies the woff (“what are you doing? Woffs are unpredictable! They migrate willy-nilly!” “This is why one should never fly without a permit!”) is not only super relatable, but kind of... reminds me... of someone...
Tumblr media
*General Grievous voice* General Kenobi!
Ahem. Anyway.
Are we gonna talk about the implications of a whole darn mountain just downright disappearing? I mean, people study mountains and their formations and stuff. Can you imagine a group of, idk, geology or geography students going to that valley to do a project and when they get there there’s a whole mountain that has gone missing? It would be wild, man. College students don’t have that much sanity to spare.
—————————————————-
STOP for a few seconds. This is the “let’s appreciate the Hilda colour pallete” time
Tumblr media
Thank you for your attention. Now back to the episode.
—————————————————-
Oh man, that moment when Hilda and Johanna are watching the giants leave after destroying the house? And Johanna says “they haven’t even noticed what they’ve done”? And then Hilda looks down and Johanna is stepping on an elf house? Poetic cinema. Though I felt very bad for them losing literally everything like omg that sucks.
Woodman gifting them some logs looked so sweet! I really love those characters that act all tough but actually care a lot. But then I remembered that this would be the same as you and I giving someone human flesh, and suddenly I remembered why he appears in the fandom’s sleep paralysis.
So, huh, has anyone noticed that when Woodman answers “For you” after Hilda says “that’s very comforting” he turns his head around 180 degrees? No? We’re ignoring it? Okay.
Tumblr media
Y’all, Twig helps them find the things that can be salvaged from the house. Don’t touch me, I’m weak :(
Tumblr media
And *that*, my friends, is how you do a climatic ending! I mean, “they built a wall to keep out anything interesting” followed by this scene? That’s just good writing and I won’t be taking arguments on this.
Now it’s the time foooor
Wife’s episode score!
+10 for Hilda putting herself on life threatening situations
+5 for “you’re very observant. It’s unnerving.”
+2 for Alfur tapping his little feet while he waits for Hilda at the door
+2 for that pretty elf pottery we saw in the King’s castle
+5 for Hilda being judgy of everything in Trollberg
Yep that sums up to 24! That’s what we have for today, folks!

Supernatural 15x13, Destiny’s Child -- Review
I know what you all are thinking. What is going on? Blue, this episode came out like back in April or something. How are you just now getting to it? Well, because I am super smart and just a wonderful goddess in general, when this episode originally came out, I thought to myself, “After this episode, there’s going to be an extremely long hiatus, why not sit on this episode until right before the return of the rest of the season and then watch it then? That way, the hellatus won’t feel quite so hellish like it would be to you all wonderful common folk who watched it when it premiered.” -- Or, at least, that’s what I’d like to say...but the truth is, when this episode originally aired, I just didn’t care enough to watch it. I love Supernatural so much, but ultimately, this season and the past couple of seasons really, have been boring to me. Sure, every couple of episodes, they’ll do some things I find interesting but it’s not something that they’re consistent with. When I hunker down to watch a SPN episode, I’m not getting giddy with excitement like I used to or actively trying to avoid spoilers before I’ve had a chance to watch the latest episode. I’m just like, “eh, I could watch an episode.” And my reviews for SPN have become a little bit far and between because the episodes just aren’t leaving me with any kind of motivation to talk about them. And it saddens me that I’ve become like this. But who knows, maybe after season 15 finishes and the show is done, I’ll rewatch the show from the beginning and maybe I’ll appreciate the past few seasons a little more.
But let’s talk about this episode. If you’re new here, welcome. I like to review show I watch. I hope you enjoy this and be warned my reviews are not always spoiler free. I’m never sure how in-depth I’m going to get into these reviews when I write them but just know there’s probably going to be some modicum of spoilers in it. So if you haven’t seen this episode yet but are planning to, maybe read this at your own risk.
So right off the bat, in the recap of all things, I immediately get hit with the Megstiel feels. I just love that when making the recap they felt the need to mention the Pizzaman and the Babysitter gag. And I really appreciated it. They didn’t have to be that extra in regards to Rachel’s appearance in this episode. Just a quick scene of Meg talking about Cas being her unicorn would probably have been sufficient. But the fact that they basically went into the very crux of their relationship using the Pizzaman and the Babysitter in the recap was just very wonderful and very extra and I loved it.
We got some angel vs demon kind of ideologies and what they stand for being subverted here. In this case, we found that Ruby the demon that tricked Sam was more trustworthy than Jo, an angel who heals people for money. And I suppose that’s probably the real crux of the subversion. We like to think of angels as pure and noble but in this case, Jo isn’t exactly that. And as far as demons, we expect them to be ruthless and evil. But Jo and Ruby kind of switched that up and really it makes kind of perfect sense. These two have always been go-getters, eager to take what they want and I can see how they might become frienemies. But the difference being that Jo is cold and meticulous but in her own way Ruby is very emotional and passionate. So of course Ruby would basically beg Cas to find a way to get her out of the Empty because someone who is emotional and passionate, being forced to stew in all your regrets forever in the Empty would be something terrible for her to endure. And even though she tricked Sam to get what she wanted, it doesn’t change the fact that she was able to do those things because of her emotions and her passions. That about her was never a lie and I could just keep going on and on about Ruby because she’s just such an interesting villain to me.
Cas encounters “Meg” in the Empty and I just loved for that split second when he sees her before he realizes she’s the Empty, there’s this tiny smile he gives, he’s genuinely happy to see and I want more of that, please. It was so sweet. And then how heartbroken he was when he realized she was actually the Empty, it broke my heart too. Obviously, I knew that it wasn’t really Meg but I was living in the moment and I was just so happy on Cas’s behalf.
And Jack visits the Garden and somehow gets his soul back. I’m not really sure how that works because didn’’t he burn it away until there was nothing left? But I”ll just wave it off as, “it’s magic, don’t think about it too much.” However, I did feel like the writing of him in the moments after he got his soul back was a little clunky and maybe didn’t really work for me. In the beginning of the episode, he tells Cas that he understands what he did to Mary as bad but he doesn’t feel it and wonders if Dean will ever forgive him. In which case, Cas gives Jack some hope regarding that saying that maybe Dean will. “He feels so acutely” after all. Which again, sounds like someone justifying abuse but whatever. I’m not going to get into all that here. Most people who hang around my blog know my feelings on Dean Winchester. But after Jack gets his soul and his really feeling things and now has the emotions to back up his understanding of the Mary incident, he begs Dean for forgiveness and this just doesn’t sit right with me. I mean, I get it, it’s supposed to call back to the beginning of the episode where Jack wants to be forgiven but without having any emotional understanding of forgiveness. But Jack has just gone through this great ordeal, he’s feeling everything right now, and the first thing he wants is for Dean to forgive him? I mean, if I were feeling the weight of what I did to Mary for the first time, I think my initial thought process would be, “How could I possibly want Dean to forgive me, what I did was unforgiveable, I don’t deserve it”. So to me, it just felt like Jack wanting forgiveness from Dean in that moment at the end of the episode, it just felt kind of clunky and manufactured for the sake of drama.
I will say this about this episode, while there were many parts I actively enjoyed, I felt like it was trying to do too much in 42 minutes. And the really weird part about this season and last season too is that while it feels like its trying to do too much, the season also feels like it’s moving at a snail’s pace. While this episode had some fun parts, I think I’d probably give it a B-. Enjoyable but could’ve been better if things were fleshed out a little more.

spn rewatch | wendigo
Tumblr media
I’m gonna be real upfront right now. This episode scared the piss out of me when I first saw it. I’m sorry but a crazy fast, perfect hunter who can move faster than you can blink and eats human flesh to survive and can mimic a person’s voice to lure you to them?! I WAS TERRIFIED! It didn’t help that I had just moved into our new house, which is on five acres of land with about four of those acres being nothing but woods. But, for real, I know some of the effects aren’t as good as they could be by today’s standards but I actually loved and was terrified of this episode the first time I saw it, which kind of amped up the scary factor from the pilot for me.
Okay, here we go.
So as if we needed to further cement that this is taking place in glorious 2005, you’ve got two guys playing games on their Nintendo DS’s (RIP pre-Glee Cory Monteith, the only person who could’ve competed with Jared vertically) and then Tommy recording a video on his Blackberry, somehow magically having it perfectly level with his face despite not being able to see the screen as he records. Like seriously that’s the supernatural activity they should be investigating.
Tumblr media
Okay but so some of the wendio effects later in the episode are not so great but in this first scene, I think they made some pretty solid choices of just relying on the whole concept of “less is more” and giving mostly scary sounds and rustling trees and making you more afraid of what could be in the forest than creating a scary visual to throw at you right off the bat. Solid scary intro scene.
The cemetery scene. Totally classic shoutout to Carrie. I had just gotten into Stephen King when I started watching Supernatural (honestly I was delving into all kinds of horror themed things at the time) and I’d seen Carrie for the first time not too long before this. Which means not only was I super scared by the jump scare (because I’m still jumpy as fuck to this day), I was also SUPER proud of myself for knowing what they were trying to reference there. I definitely thought I was cool for getting that one. Now, not so much. But the scene still makes me jump.
I really do like the ways they’re kind of trying to establish how the brothers care for each other. Like you know right off the bat in the pilot that their relationship is rough at best and that there’s some pretty obvious toxic masculinity on Dean’s part at least but like you can still see that Dean’s concerned. He’s got his own way of showing it but he’s worried about his little brother.
Side note: just remember that they both had a seriously messed up childhood and the fact that either of them are as close to normal as they are is impressive. Like I think all things considered, they’re pretty well adjusted. Kind of.
This episode is kind of outside the norm compared to future episodes with how Sam and Dean both handle the case when they first get to town. The fact that Sam just wants to go straight to the coordinates John left them while Dean’s the one saying “maybe we should do a little research first” is bizarro. But it also kind of helps show just where Sam’s mind is at at this point. He’s not coming to this as a hunter taking on a case, he’s a man with a vendetta and the next step he needs to take is finding John. He’s fueled by anger and grief and guilt and that kind of reflects when he seems less concerned about what’s going on in the woods and more interested in just getting out there ASAP.
Okay, just like they couldn’t pass as US Marshals, the guys seriously do not look like park rangers at all. Like you guys aren’t even trying come on. And good on Haley for being suspicious even if she did seem to buy into their story for a bit.
BABY HAN SOLO!
Tumblr media
I totally did not realize that was Alden Ehrenreich playing Ben until I saw his name on screen at the beginning of the episode. He looks so so so young in this ohmygod. Also think I’ll need to keep a list of like all the crazy celeb cameos of people who got famous after being on the show. Or were already famous but I totally forgot popped up.
For our next super underrated guest star scene of the series, Shaw - the old man who’s parents were taken by a “grizzly” back when he was a kiddo in 1959.
Tumblr media
Like seriously, it’s one scene but Donnelly Rhodes (RIP) does an amazing job with the scene and like it kind of leaves me with chills whenever he says that whatever it was didn’t break down the door but unlocked it. Like that’s still hella spooky to me. Also, I still don’t totally understand why the wendigo left him behind. Like you’d think for a monster that is going to have a big ass meal before hibernation would want as much meat as possible. Like yeah a little kid wouldn’t much but he’d be something right?
Also that’s a gnarly scar like how did he survive that.
So Dean talks about it being possibly a skinwalker or a black dog but like looking into what those both actually are I honestly don’t understand why he would think that based on what they know about the attacks. Like black dogs are death omens and skinwalkers wouldn’t be able to do the kind of damage that’s being done considering everyone’s just like “oh it’s a grizzly”. So like I dunno, I guess this might’ve been the writers tossing out references to other creatures to make it sound like Dean knows a bunch but like neither of those would be my first guesses for this case.
Kind of just like “early installment weirdness” but whatever. It’s not a big deal, just me nitpicking.
Okay so Roy is kind of a jackass but like he knows what he’s doing for the most part and he totally doesn’t buy the guys story about beng park rangers for one minute. So like I can respect that. And like if it would’ve been an actual animal attacking people, he might’ve survived but oh well.
I do like that Haley just goes ahead and calls bullshit on the park rangers story before they even go on their adventure but Dean’s whole “it's probably the most honest I've ever been with a woman...ever.” is just kind of cringey.
Tumblr media
So all the traipsing through the woods and the “I’m smarter than you” staredown between Roy and Sam is not super interesting but I do like that 1 - we get to see Sam being angry and being emotional in a more volatile way because that’s not often the case as the show goes on - and 2 - we get our iconic line of “saving people, hunting things, the family business” and the whole idea that they’re not supposed to meet up with John but do the jobs he doesn’t have time for while he’s hunting for the demon that killed Mary.
I don’t think I really realized why John would leave them coordinates and the journal when he didn’t plan on actually meeting up with them when I watched this as a kid. I just kind of shrugged it off as like a necessary plot device for the show to progress, didn’t really see it as anything with a deeper meaning. And I think it’s fair that you can’t read too much into after an episode and a half because there’s so much that we don’t know yet about the boys and John and their story and all of that. But like looking at it with the knowledge of their lives and everything, it’s a lot heavier moment to me. Maybe I’m just reading too much into it.
Okay so the rest of the episode is just encounter monster, piss off monster, get kidnapped by monster, track monster, kill monster. Kind of standard, not super exciting like there’s not a lot to talk about. Dean with his molotov cocktails is kind of fantastic.
Tumblr media
The trail of M&Ms is fun and yes better than breadcrumbs. Sam immediately becoming invested in killing the monster once Dean’s been taken gives me all kinds of feels because I love when these two go into protective brother mode. And Dean all banged up with bruises and cuts and dirt is a look I probably shouldn’t like as much as I do but that’s a conversation for another day.
The wendigo does look a little cheesy when you get better glimpses of it because early 00s special effects so it’s definitely for the best they keep things pretty shadowy for the end of the episode. Not the worst looking monster of season one and still scary enough, to me at least.
So this is the episode that seems to start the trend that if there’s a girl involved and her life gets saved by the Winchesters, one of them is going to flirt with her and get some kind of physical affection before they leave town. It doesn’t happen every episode but it happens enough that 26 year old me is rolling my eyes. 14 year old me had no issues with Sam and Dean getting smooches because look at them. But now I’m kind of like this seems a little unnecessary but whatever. It’s not the worst instance and all in all, I actually really liked Haley. I liked the whole Collins family. They were some solid guest characters and I feel like the scenes where Sam and Dean are interacting with them individually does a good job of kind of fleshing out their characters a bit more. It gives a chance for some necessary exposition without feeling too forced.
All in all, solid episode. Scary monster, intensified my fear of the woods, gave some good scenes, iconic lines. Does it have some cheesy moments? Yes. Is it the best episode of the series? No. Does it still scare me when I watch it? 100%.
BODY COUNT: 3 humans (Brad, Gary, Roy); 1 wendigo (our first corporeal monster - also like I’m curious about who the wendigo was before it changed, like how long has it been in the wilderness, how did it wind up at Blackwater Ridge, how it wound up this far west)
RATING: 7.5/10 - yep, I’ll say it. I think this episode is better than the pilot. Not by much but the characters feel a little closer to who they become throughout season one and I feel like you get a better feel for them than we did in the pilot. Also the wendigo scares me more than Sarah Shahi in a sexy nightgown I’m just saying.

Max, Helen and Predictions for Their Relationship in Season 2
Tumblr media
Gif credit @chihirours
Hey guys, I’m so sorry that my meta is late as usual! Lol! Before I dive into this I just want to quickly say that I can’t believe that tomorrow is the season finale of New Amsterdam! What am I going to do without the show?!😩 It has genuinely become my favorite show on tv right now and I’m so glad I discovered it. With that being said, here’s a quick recap of Tuesday’s episode as it relates to Sharpwin:
Panthaki, Panthaki, Panthaki... Like clockwork he has finally fulfilled his role on the show. Like I said in my very first meta about Sharpwin, it was obvious that Dr. Panthaki was going to take issue with Helen’s relationship with Max. In Sharpe and Panthaki’s first encounter, he was already questioning why Helen was treating her boss and he was the first one who addressed Max and Helen’s obvious bond. All of this was leading to this conclusion where ultimately Helen would choose Max over her relationship. There was never a chance for Panthaki and Sharpe because Panthaki’s role was always a romantic false lead. His presence was literally there to give way to the true endgame couple on the show. I highly doubt that we will see Panthaki again next season. Their scene seemed final to me and this is purposeful for what it means for Helen and Max next season.
Moving on, let’s talk about the big moment in the episode where Helen decides be to Max’s doctor again! I have so many mixed feelings about this guys because this one action has so many implications. First of all, before this decision I genuinely wasn’t sure about Georgia’s fate on the finale. Despite the spoilers, (I won’t mention them here because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone) I still felt that Georgia’s fate would be up in the air and that she could possibly live. Now with Helen becoming Max’s doctor again, I’m 99.9% positive that Georgia will die in the season finale. Now don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a cop out for the show. Max and Helen was planned and intentional from the very beginning!! I want to make that clear. The romantic tv tropes were there from their very first scene. But we have to look at what Helen’s decision means from a narrative perspective.
First, we need to remind ourselves that Helen stopped being Max’s doctor for a reason! The subtext is incredibly clear with them and she needed to set boundaries knowing that Max wouldn’t because he couldn’t choose. She triaged their relationship because she couldn’t be Max’s all of the above. Now that Helen is Max’s doctor again, narratively speaking, it’s not possible for Georgia to still be in the picture. Helen in that moment chose to be Max’s All of the Above regardless of the “subtext” in their relationship and how that decision ultimately will affect their lives outside of each other. This isn’t the story where Max gets to have his cake and eat it too! It’s so much deeper than that and I’m convinced that fate wouldn’t let it happen that way. That’s why it makes perfect sense that Panthaki walked out on Helen. He knew that Helen had made her choice and would never choose him over Max. Also it’s not by coincidence that the moment Helen became Max’s doctor again, it seems like the universe is making Max’s choice for him with Georgia. As heart-wrenching as that is, all of this lays the beautiful and redemptive groundwork of Max and Helen’s story together.
Tumblr media

Secondly, this makes me think about what Max and Helen’s relationship will be like in season 2. With Georgia gone (I could be wrong but I doubt it), there is no doubt in my mind that Helen will be there to help with baby Luna. But the question is, how in the world is Helen going to manage being Max’s everything! She is literally going to be his doctor, his deputy, his friend, confidant and so much more! That is way too much for anyone to take on and I honestly don’t know how the story is going to flesh out for Helen without her being totally and completely overwhelmed. Before Helen decided to be Max’s doctor again, I believe she would continue to be Max’s deputy and friend and through her friendship would Max, it would give her the space to be there for him more on a personal level with Luna. Now that she’s Max doctor again this is where I see her arc playing out.
The main benefit that I see in Helen’s choice in being Max’s doctor again is that it’s going to challenge her as a doctor. All of her conventional belief systems of medicine is about to change and for the first time she’s going to take “medical risks” when it comes to paitient care. I can easily see her doing extensive research and running her own clinical trials. Rewatching the series this would make sense for one of Helen’s character arcs. I would love for her to partner up with someone (not panthanki) who is well versed in clinical trials and they can lead it together. I think this scenario would help alleviate some of the pressure/burden Helen has put on herself to save Max’s life. She loves him and I think for that reason alone it might not have been the best decision for her to take him back on. I can potentially see this leading to some sort of conflict. With that being said, I’m really excited to see this arc for Helen if that’s what they have planned for her! She is already a phenomenal doctor but it would be awesome to see her break new ground in cancer research.
Regardless of my personal feelings of Helen potentially taking too much on, I still believe that Max and Helen’s relationship will flourish. For Max, Luna is going to be his driving force for him to fight for his life and Helen is going to play a big part in that as well. I would love for Iggy to walk him through his grief and I think the show is subtly settting this up. I was going to write another meta about Iggy recognizing the affect that Helen has on Max in terms of his treatment, but I’ll go ahead an address it here. Iggy pointing that out was incredibly significant. I had this inkling that Iggy was going to be the first one to call out their relationship and that’s exactly what happened. This moment can easily fall under the Everyone Can See it trope and tells me that if Iggy has taken notice maybe others on the staff have too. If this happens in the show, I hope we get insight into Max’s past and I also hope these sessions will help Max address his feelings for Helen.
The last point I want to make is about Max, Helen and Luna. I think this dynamic will be so natural for the three of them but also complicated/angsty. I can totally see Max going through a guilt stage where he feels bad about having Helen around helping with the baby. The guilt wouldn’t necessarily come from her presence but more so for the feelings he has for her and I can see that leading to some angst. The same thing with Helen. She might feel awkward/guilty for essentially fulfilling a role meant for Georgia, but either way the potential for angst is there.
Could Max and Helen be a full blown couple by the end of season 2? Maybe, but I’m still holding out for season 3 or 4. I still believe this is a slow burn that needs to be fleshed out but I’m excited to see the journey!
What are your thoughts for the next season for Max and Helen?! Let me know in the comments!

Rewatching Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Tumblr media
...I honestly have no idea how I’ll feel. Older fans consider this the weakest of the original trilogy, but it's still some people’s favorite. I guess time will tell.
This is the first Star Wars movie to really on Star Wars nostalgia. They even mirrored the iconic shot. What with the second Death Star. I’m not faulting it for that, though.
The Emperor creates a sense of dread with even his mention. It’s pretty difficult to power creep Darth Vader, but I think this movie does a good job.
There’s a ton of great aliens in this movie. I know the same is true for the original, but here if feels like the budget has really increased since the beginning.
...You know, this universe could use a story with a more in-depth look at the need for droid rights. The activist droid from Solo touched upon it a little, but she was a bit too silly to be taken seriously.
Lucas obviously had ideas for the show that’s put on for Jabba that he couldn’t implement at the time, but it’s pretty jarring to see it added in with CGI
...between the Twili and Leia, this movie has a bit more fanservice than the others. Eh, Ben Swolo will bring balance to the fansevice someday.
People have said that the plan to rescue Han Solo only makes sense if you assume every character had their own separate plan they didn’t tell the others about. Now I can’t help but to see surprise whenever one character sees another, as if they honestly didn’t know they’d be there. C-3PO definitely didn’t. Although Luke and R2-D2 seems to know everything somehow. Maybe it was a Plan A, B, C , etc, situation
Leia got to rescue Han. That’s so sweet. That and the revisiting of “I love you” “I know” really helps cement their relationship, and play with the troupes used in the first movie.
Luke has a dark appearance in this movie, and even force chokes like Darth Vader does. It show that he’s grown powerful, but that power might corrupt.
...This trio has such good chemistry.
Boda Fett’s death is lamer then I remember it. Han killed him by accident.
Leia was put in the infamous slave outfit, but she used her chain to kill Jabba. Doesn’t that sum up her character. A damsel in distress at first glance, but she proves to be a very capable fighter who can take care of herself.
Nobody talks about Jabba’s Imp when talking about weird toyetic Star Wars creatures.
Although people may question the logic, the Jabba’s palace arc is pretty dang cool.
Luke was mostly self-taught, seeing how he never finished Yoda’s training.
...Luke’s been the last Jedi since this movie. I never noticed.
Rest in Peace Yoda. I’m glad it wasn’t the end for you.
Leia being Luke’s sister (and thus having the force) was kind of pointless until the Sequel trilogy.
I like how they explained why Obi-Wan lied. Although this movie implies training Anakin was his idea. I still love Qui-Gon, but his inclusion was kind of a mistake.
The masters got it wrong, Darth Vader really could be stopped without Luke killing him.
The Rebellion is a bit more fleshed out in this movie.
I love how the knowlege that they’ve father and son completely changed Vader and Luke’s relationship. It’s a very fascinating dynamic.
Han’s kind of slapsticky in this movie. Kind of a step down from his deuteragonist role last time
People are a bit critical of the forest chase scene, but I think its pretty cool.
The Ewoks. The oldest hated Star Wars creature. I have no strong feelings one way or the other about them. Although C-3PO being mistaken for a god is a bit too silly for me.
There’s a baby Ewok. But it has nothing on baby Yoda
C3PO recapped Star Wars in Ewok. How odd.
“She died when I was very young.” Very, Very young.
I love how Luke’s speech about his family appeared in the Force Awakens trailer.
“It is too late for me, son.” I feel as if Vader has regrets.
Every scene with Luke, Vader and Palpatine is utterly fantastic, some of the greatest scenes of all time.
I think this is the movie where Stormtroopers started to become a joke.
Luke was going to sacrifice himself. I didn’t remember that.
I love how much of a chess-master the Emperor is. He’s so fun to watch.
“It’s a Trap” What a classic
Palpatine was willing to die. Hmm....maybe this will be expanded upon in Rise of Skywalker
The Ewoks are very capable fighters, but it’s a bit weird how important they were for the Empire’s final battle. Although they can be taken very seriously when the situation calls for it.
I love just how hopeless the Emperor made Luke and the Rebellion.
...Chewbacca has had mascots has his copilot since this movie too.
The final battle between Luke and Vader is utterly fantastic. One of my favorite scenes in the entire series. The idea that Vader will go after Leia causes Luke to suddenly drop his optimistic nature and go for the attack. And for the first time, he beats Vader is a LIghtsaber fight. But when Luke realizes he did to Vader what Vader did to him, he stops.
A moment actually enhanced by the prequels. After both is inaction and his action killed off his loved ones, Anakin finally has had enough, and saves the life of his son, and finally stands up to Palpatine.
Vader’s death in redemption is utterly fantastic. A fantastic end to the character. Unless he guest stars in Rise of Skywalker, maybe?
...Huh. So Last Jedi wasn’t the first movie to destroy a ship with another ship. Why does it not happen more often? Because the movies would be too short.
I love the ending music in the modern version. It’s fantastic. Although it is a bit odd Anakin’s force ghost is so young.
And Peace is brought to the galaxy. But Peace doesn’t last forever, and shown in the sequel trilogy.
Overall, this is an excellent movie, with very high hights, but also a couple of lows. I’ll put it in the middle of my original trilogy ranking.

(based on your previous ask) do you mind if I ask how you feel about lok? is there a general consensus if it's good or bad? youre really insightful and just wanted to know if there were any major issues you had with it
yeah sure, i’ll do my best. if you want a quick answer to your question, here is a link to some of my other korra posts where i say pretty much the same thing as i do here, just in fewer words. cause this post will be mostly an unhappy summary of my experience watching the show. this post will contain spoilers, and disclaimer, i am a really biased, disappointed asshole, so i’ll just admit that now.
short answer: i liked the concept of lok more than the product we got. a lot of that is because you had a physically buff brown wlw protagonist written mostly by cishet white men and, as you can imagine, it wasn’t handled great. when i think of lok now i tend to fluctuate between bittersweet nostalgia and quiet, simmering rage.
if you don’t care about the show summary, skip at the middle paragraph break down to my tldr.
so for those who don’t know, LOK was really my first “big” fandom on tumblr. when it was announced, a bunch of ATLA purists were already hating on it because 1) brown woman, 2) it was unrealistic to go from ATLA’s technology to streampunk in 70 years, and 3) it wasn’t ATLA, basically. it was my first big interest that i got to participate in as it was airing, and i was really excited about it. i defended it, i wrote meta, i liveblogged, i wrote tons of fic and spammed theories/wants before the damn show even had a release date. all that is to say, i was Invested, and i believed in it before i even saw it. people called me a bnf, i’m not sure if that’s true, but i did gain a lot my followers in my first few years on tumblr by posting korra stuff. a lot of them – hello – i think are still around today (i’m not certain how all the video games hasn’t scared them off yet)
i should say at this point that my opinion of LOK the show has been really wrapped up in the ugly stain left by the fanbase. korra the character has been the subject of tons of racist, misogynistic criticism since the moment we saw her back; when she showed up on screen as a proud young woman who fought with authority and stood up for herself, that was the nail in the coffin for her reputation. i agreed that she had a bit of growing up to do, because ATLA/LOK have always been stories about coming of age and maturing, but i disagreed strongly with this notion that she deserved to be “humbled,” which is what a lot of fans were looking for.
the overall consensus on if it’s “good” depends on who you ask. most people agree that ATLA is better overall: it was better plotted because it benefited from more writers in the room and more episodes to flesh out the world. opinions on LOK specifically range based a lot on their opinions of the K/orra/sami pairing, if they were involved in or what side they were on in any of the fandom wank, and also just complete random chance.
i’ll go more in depth into my ‘history’ with the show below, but i just wanted to mention that all the while the show was airing, korra was being hit with waves of criticism by so-called fans for basically being a confident brown woman who were calling for her to learn her place, respect her elders, etc. another common theme was fandom’s brilliant fucking idea that asami, a light-skinned feminine non-bending woman who was more polite and reserved than korra, would’ve made a better avatar. because you know why. (korra was often described as brutal, rough, unsophisticated, next to pretty, perfect asami. and asami is a fine character, to be clear, but that’s what she was – fine. nothing really stands out about her, which is a fault of the writing, because she had a lot of potential too.) so anyway all of this did sour my mood toward engaging with other fans outside my friend circle.
it was around maybe the middle of book 1 that i realized the writing for the show was simpler than what i was expecting – not that it was childish, which it was (because it was written for children, i understood that), but i felt like the plot meandered and the twists came out of nowhere. it felt like they were making it up as they were going, and it opened threads it didn’t answer. one of the biggest threads was the equalist revolution, which was a very sensitive topic that got jettisoned when the leader was revealed to be a fraud, and that devalued the entire movement in an instant. really disappointing, because i was looking forward to seeing that addressed. for a lot of people, this was a dealbreaker, and they started walking. i stuck with it, but loosely.
book 2 aired, focusing on the spiritual world and some really cool history. it still suffered a lot from awkward b-plots and loose threads it didn’t know how to tackle. korra lost her memory and then regained it 2 episodes later with no consequences, mako flip-flopped between korra and asami because bryke don’t know how to write teenage romances without making it a love triangle, and at some point bolin kissed a girl against her will and they didnt acknowledge that at all? i honestly don’t remember. anyway at the end of book 2, even though korra saves the day and prevents the world from descending into darkness for ten thousand years, due to events beyond her control, korra loses the spiritual connection that ties her to all of the previous avatars – aang, roku, kyoshi, wan, everyone. and people hit the fucking ceiling. “korra’s not a real avatar if she lost her connection to the old ones! that’s the entire point of the cycle! this show is bullshit, it’s not canon anymore!” (the entire point that finale demonstrated that korra’s power alone was enough to save the world and she didn’t need anyone else. but people found that ~unrealistic~ i guess). as you can imagine, being a fan of LOK is starting to get a little tiring by now.
books 3-4 is where the korra haters got to love the show again, because they were both straight-up torture porn. after everything she did saving the world, this is the arc where korra got beat down, tortured, dragged into the dirt, swallowed and spat back out. book 3 is a lot of people’s favorites because it was the first book that felt fully plotted out before it was put on air, which is why i enjoyed it too. but for me it was difficult to see a girl, whose identity revolved around being the avatar after being raised and sheltered to think it was all she was good for, effectively abandon her life and even her name by the beginning of book 4 because the events of book 3 were that traumatizing for her. somehow this was character development. we were encouraged to stick with it because we hoped korra would find herself again. and she did, sorta.
but it makes me furious that people who had quit in books 1-2 came back during 3 because they heard these books were better – aka book 3, the book that featured korra the least, and books 3-4 in which korra got her ass handed to her in some of the hardest fights vs some of the cruelest villains of the series. (nevermind that the book 3 villains suffer from the anime villain curse: they quickly went from “cool character design” to “wait, how does this rando group of villains show up with powers literally no one in the universe has ever heard before?” – questions no one ever answers)
anyway book 4 is a mish-mash of… i’m not sure. i’ve rewatched all the books but i don’t know if i’ll ever touch this one again. the culturally appropriating airbender wannabe, zaheer (a complete rando who somehow masters airbending enough to fly, which was a huge middle finger to airbending masters aang and tenzin for no reason) a guy who literally tortured korra one season before and put her in a wheelchair, is the one who the writers send korra to for her spiritual awakening that lets her save the day. not tenzin or jinora, her spiritual teachers with whom she has positive, healthy relationships – they send her back to her abuser who terrifies and degrades her a bit more before deciding to help. this was a pattern: the writers made both korra and asami face their abusers (in asami’s case, her father) for catharsis instead of gaining peace over their trauma another, healthier way because. i’m not sure why. there is no reason why. and then there’s the guilt tripping nonsense of asami feeling as if she had to forgive her father, who tried to kill her, because he said he was sorry and sacrificed himself for her in the finale. it’s angst galore, if you like that kind of thing, which i normally do, except this is less angst and more just the writers trying to hammer in torture porn, grimdark, and poor attempts at morally gray nonsense into their finale season.
anyway at the end of her journey, korra, our buff brown woc, learns that she had to suffer to learn how to be compassionate and relate to her enemy. i’m not exaggerating, she literally says that. which is lovely.
tldr: i wasted a lot of emotional time and energy into this show and was extremely disappointed when some of the ending’s notes were “you had to suffer to become a better person” and “forgive your abusers/villains because aren’t we all the same in the end?”
but also on a strictly narrative level, LOK also bit off way more than it could chew both emotionally and thematically. it had an amazing premise, but it was not committed to
utilizing the steampunk genre to its best potential in the bending world (after the creativity in the rest of the worldbuilding, the LOK series finale was literally fighting a giant robot – seriously?)
giving its hero the respect and character arc she deserved. and i don’t say that because i think korra had no growing up to do in b1, she did, but she didn’t deserve for it to happen like that.
so basically i realized that a lot of the writers that made ATLA great weren’t brought back for LOK, and it showed. i realized that the LOK writers, when they listened to fans, were listening to the fans that whined the loudest, or (more likely, since they plan seasons years before we see them) they thought from the beginning that it was a good idea for korra to go through years’ worth of pain just to be spat out a humbler, “better” person
the reason i told you all that about me defending LOK in the beginning is because i need you to understand that i believed in LOK longer than i probably should’ve. i wanted it to be everything i was expecting in a diverse children’s show with an unorthodox female protaganist. but just because they had a brown wlw heroine doesn’t mean that they deserved to be praised for it when they treated her like garbage.
and korra and asami walk into a beam of light together in the last second of the show and i’m supposed to applaud the writers for their bravery or something

A passing thought that needs to be fleshed out follows:
I was watching a video on the philosophy of Bo Burnham. It was interesting, but then Youtube suggested this video which becomes pertinent starting at 15:45
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRfIoqkkIsM&t=15m45s
The author posits that the Chipotle part of “Can’t Handle This (Kanye Rant)” from Make Happy is all metaphor.
Lay aside the Kanye connections for now. Can everything in the joke half of the song be read as metaphor? A few clues can be found in the song itself, the title of the special, and the song that follows it “Are You Happy?”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCp3n95qSZg
Here are my notes because I will probably not get around to rewatching the whole special and fleshing this out. Maybe you can help me decode it.
Running commentary amidst the transcribed lyrics.
Can I say my shit? New York! Can I say my shit? I've got lots of shit to say I've got lots of shit to say
Can he voice his inner turmoil: his shit. Shit is an important word here to be linked later.
I can't fit my hand inside a Pringle can I have a huge amount of trouble Fitting my hand inside of a Pringle can I can get my hand like four inches into the can But then I have to tilt the can into my mouth But by that point a bunch of crumbs have accumulated at the bottom of the can So they all go spilling onto my face
Pringles can is a metaphor for happiness? He can approach happiness, but when he tries to reach for what he wants, he cannot achieve it and only gets crumbs of it.
What I'm trying to say is that the diameter Of Pringle cans is way too small I'll say it again The diameter of Pringle cans is way too small Two radiuses of a Pringle can is way too small If you feel me, put your hands up Come on! If you feel me, put your hands up Look at all these hands that are way too big to fit inside a Pringle can Your hands are too big to fit inside a Pringle can Your hands are too big to fit inside a Pringle can You think you can, I know you can You think you can- Pringles! Listen to the people, I am sure ninety percent of the complaint letters you get Are about the width of your cans Just make 'em wider I've overdone the Pringles thing Sorry
No one in the audience is able to achieve happiness. The hands are too big. Everyone is too old. Happiness has an achieve by date or happiness is too difficult to ever grasp.
I want to have a daughter I want to have a daughter So I can finally have someone around the house who can fit their hands Into Pringle cans Yes, I'm still on the Pringle cans thing! Yeah! I'll move on, alright? But that is priority numero uno
He either wants to return to when he thought happiness was attainable and was happy along the path to a perceived goal happiness at the bottom of a can/end of the tunnel, or it is a vicarious longing for happiness that comes from the naïveté of youth.
I don't go to the gym Because I'm selfconscious about my body But I'm selfconscious about my body because I don't go to the gym Irony can be so painful That's a Catch-22 Let's do this!
Similar look at happiness, probably illuminated by material preceding this. Also a back and forth play reminiscent of the title. Make Happy has a lack of pronoun. Is he making the audience happy or himself happy, and is one predicated on the other?
I went to Chipotle I went to Chipotle Got myself a chicken burrito I went down the line, I got like all these ingredients And then at the end of the line The guy tried to wrap the burrito But half of the shit inside the burrito spilled out And he still wrapped it I was like, dude, you should have warned me! You're a burrito expert You should have told me halfway through! "Hey, man. You might be reaching maximum burrito capacity here." Do you think I want a messy burrito? No one wants a messy burrito The whole appeal of the burrito is that all of the ingredients are contained Within the confines of the tortilla I wouldn't have gotten half the shit if I knew it wasn't gonna fit in the burrito! Alright? Look!
Chipotle is a location for mass production of a facsimile, non-authentic product. This hearkens back to his previous specials’ content about mass produced celebrities. In his own mass production, he got too much in his burrito and it would not fit. Too much made him unhappy. Trying to be too much made him unhappy? The burrito experts did not warn him. Celebrity looked appealing. He would not have gotten half the shit. Tying shit back to the shit or turmoil he is speaking about from the beginning. The whole appeal of the happiness of celebrity burrito is that you are self contained/self fulfilled? Make [self] happy. But again who is the pronoun in Make Happy? And who makes whom happy? [self] Make [self] happy is not working and will be explored later in the song.
I wouldn'ta got the lettuce if I knew it wouldn't fit Wouldn'ta got the cheese if I knew it wouldn't fit Wouldn'ta  got the peppers if I knew they wouldn't fit I wouldn'ta got half of it I'm okay with small mistakes If you've got no more chicken, I'll take pork But I'll blow my dad before I eat a burrito with a fork Wouldn'ta got the lettuce if I knew it wouldn't Wouldn'ta got the cheese if I knew it wouldn't Wouldn'ta got the peppers if I knew they wouldn't I wouldn'ta got half of it like Half of it like Half of it like Half of it right now I think it's time I think it's time that we break it down
Lettuce, cheese, and peppers are stand-ins for something known personally, maybe alluded to in the earlier parts of the special. One thing of note is the choice of peppers forcing the pronoun from it to they. Also if you are familiar with Chipotle, he is going through the line backwards. Lettuce comes last, then cheese and salsa, then peppers, meat, and beans or rice. The first choice you make is to have a burrito or bowl. The stand out part of this is blowing his dad before eating a burrito with a fork. In the next song “Are You Happy” he says “Panic every time I'm unhappy like/ I'm owed some life/ Where I'm always, like, happy/ Which is stupid 'cause I wouldn't even want it if I got it/ Wait, oh god, my dad was right” and this sheds light on why he brings up his dad here. His dad has said some phrase to the above effect, which he is just now realizing, and he won’t eat the overstuffed burrito with a fork, nor will he accept an overstuffed, facsimile of happiness/ of life. The phrase coming up later “I don’t think that I can handle this.” will hearken back to this where he has created a burrito that he cannot hold. It also reminds us that his hands are too big for Pringle cans. Too big for one thing, the other thing too messy to hold. He cannot handle this burrito to enjoy this life, he must eat it with a fork, a facsimile of a happy life that goes against his dad’s advice. Dad’s advice needs fleshing out perhaps by previous material or further inspection.
I can sit here and pretend Like my biggest problems are Pringle cans And burritos The truth is, my biggest problem's you I want to please you But I want to stay true to myself I want to give you the night out that you deserve But I want to say what I think And not care what you think about it Part of me loves you Part of me hates you Part of me needs you Part of me fears you And I don't think that I can handle this right now Handle this right now I don't think that I can handle this right now
See above. Further exploration of catch-22 and the title Make [pronoun] Happy.
I don't think that I can handle this right- [x3]
He stops saying “right now” and starts saying “right,” meaning correctly.
Look at them, they're just staring at me Like come and watch the skinny kid With a steadily declining mental health And laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself
Some pronouns are suggested for the title.
Think that I can handle this right- I don't think that I can handle this right- But they don't even know the half of this right- But they don't even know the half of it But I know I'm not a doctor I'm a pussy I put on a silly show I should probably just shut up and do my job So here I go
“Half” here ties back to the burrito where he would not have gotten half of the shit if he had been warned. He cannot handle his life overfilled with things that do not produce happiness or false happiness things leading to a facsimile of life. The audience does not understand. They are not hearing his metaphor. They only understand half of it right: the joke half, not the meaning half.
Wouldn'ta got the lettuce if I knew it wouldn't fit Wouldn'ta got the cheese if I knew it wouldn't- Wouldn'ta got the peppers if I knew they wouldn't- Wouldn'ta got half You can tell them anything if You just make it funny Make it rhyme And if they still don't understand you Then you Run it one more time
Admitting that the Chipotle and Pringle can parts and maybe the whole special are all deeply personal admissions of self, wrapped in a funny, rhyming joke. Listen one more time to understand the other half and discern the meaning.
Think that I can handle this right- Ho! Handle this right- Ho! Handle this right- But you don't even know the half of this right now Right now- Ho! Now Handle this right Handle this right Handle this right now
Thank you, good night. I hope you're happy.
Following the pattern set above, he drops a word from his repeated lines and now says he can handle it. He handles it correctly and right now by ending the show, by walking off the stage, and taking a break. As he said earlier in the special, living his life without an audience. The last line is either a sincere hope for the audience, a sarcastic condemnation of what they have done to him, or both.

Top 10 Movies of 2017
Another year is behind us, so that means it’s time for everyone’s ‘my favorite ________ of 2017’ lists. This year, I’m folding to peer pressure and changing the ‘top 8’ favorite movies to ‘top 10’ because honestly, there were too many awesome movies and I originally only did it because that’s how Tarantino narrowed his picks and I wanted to seem cool or something. (On a quick related note, I can’t believe this is my 8th year of doing one of these dumb things. Crazy.) On a personal level, 2017 has been a wild year for me. I got married to my best friend, started a much better and satisfying job, and found out we’re going to be parents this year. It’s going to be an incredibly busy and life-changing 2018, and I can’t wait for it.
In terms of the past year in cinema, it’s been amazing as well. I wanted to see as many movies as I could before finalizing my favorites, and was pretty successful, with a few exceptions. I wasn’t able to see Phantom Thread, The Post, The Florida Project, The Emoji Movie or Coco, to name a few (not seeing the new PTA and Spielberg movies before writing this KILLS me). A lot of the choices on my list might be predictable, especially if you follow me on Twitter, or read movie sites/blogs. Twitter has kind of taken over my actually writing posts for this blog anymore, and maybe one day I’ll get better at coming back here and putting thoughts down (probably not though). Like I’ve said in previous years, these really don’t have a ranking, unless I specify it’s my ‘favorite’ over the others. This is a 100% subjective list, based on an incomplete sampling. The movies listed below either moved me in a huge way, were a complete blast, and/or stayed with me long after I saw them. That’s enough preamble though, let’s get to my favorites of 2017!
Tumblr media
In my eyes, this whole reboot-prequel-whatever trilogy is a cinematic miracle. This series, on it’s surface is a very campy, B-movie concept. What Rupert Wyatt and now Matt Reeves have done here is a staggering directorial achievement. This entry further fleshes out the already relatable and complex characters, and continues to add emotional depth that the originals could never even touch. In my eyes, this is what makes this the best movie trilogy since The Lord of the Rings. War Apes (what I find to be the best shorthand for this entry) is the ‘Return of the King’ equivalent of this trilogy. It takes Caesar’s story in darker, more unexpected places, and in a perfect world, would net Andy Serkis an Oscar nomination for best actor. If you’ve slept on this series because it seemed silly, or not really your jam, definitely take the time to catch up with it, it’s most definitely worth it.
Tumblr media
This was one of the last movies I saw before making this post, and having just seen it a few days ago, it’s the movie I’ve been thinking about most. In a year that I think a lot of people would call ‘complete awful garbage’, (or something similar), Guillermo Del Toro’s love story of the ‘others’ in society; the forgotten and the disenfranchised, hits home. I’m still working through my thoughts on all of it, but it’s up there with my favorites of his filmography. I don’t think GDT has ever made a movie so unapologetically ‘him’. A sequence near the end of the movie is one of my favorite things I’ve seen all year, and I thought to myself during it that nobody other than this one enigmatic, creative and strange man could make something so unique and beautiful. This one definitely isn’t for everyone, but if you like GDT’s movies, I have a feeling you’ll be on board with this one as well.
Tumblr media
From this point forward, if Taylor Sheridan has a new movie coming out, I’ll be there to see it. The previous writer of such films as Sicario and Hell or High Water makes his directorial debut with Wind River. It follows a standard neo-western trend of his previous films, but this time moving the story to snowy Wyoming. Setting the location on an American Indian reservation allows Sheridan to bring up timely themes as well, such as the incredibly high rate at which Native American women disappear on reservations, and how few are ever actually found. It’s an incredibly moving and intense story that plays out after the initial murder/mystery is established, going to some of the most intense places thematically that I’ve seen in a movie this year. The cast all around is stellar, and Jeremy Renner specifically has never been better than he is in this movie. If you’re a fan of neo-westerns or Sheridan’s other movies, Wind River is absolutely worth checking out.
Tumblr media
I had been anticipating this movie since I heard about it, having been a huge fan of ‘The Indoor Kids’ podcast, hosted by Emily Gordon and her husband Kumail Nanjiani. It’s a video game podcast that they ended a few years back, but every now and then, they would hint at how they met. This movie is how their eventual marriage came to be, and it’s a beautiful love story, which just so happens to fit the mold of one of the best romantic comedies ever made. Not only is it a great comedy, but also dramatically complex due to Emily’s time spent in a coma at the beginning of their relationship and Kumail’s meeting of her two parents. Everyone in this movie gives it their all, with Ray Romano and Holly Hunter standing out as Emily’s parents. The movie also tackles what it’s like to be the child of an immigrant in America, and that perspective was fresh and eye-opening for a big Hollywood movie. This is definitely one to watch with the family.
Tumblr media
*potential spoilers for mother!*
If you read my post I wrote about ‘Noah’, you’ll probably understand why I love this movie so much. This is the second film by Darren Aranofsky that explores the morality of not only God, but of the entire bible this time around. Something about that intent clicks with me. Maybe it’s being raised in church until my late teens or the religious cynic inside me, but I love when he tackles these issues. The fact that this religious interpretation is only one of many possible ways to read this movie is what makes it fascinating. Is it about climate change and how we’re destroying the earth? Is it a dramatization of the Bible and God’s relationship with humanity? Or is it about the relationship between artists, the things they create, and the audience? On top of these questions, Mother! Is beautifully shot, acted and constructed. I was pretty much in shock for the entire last third of the movie and that’s more than I can say for almost any movie I’ve seen this year.
Tumblr media
Y’all probably knew this was coming, right? I’m so in the bag for Star Wars movies that any objectivity is completely out the window at this point. I also understand that many people REALLY do not like this movie, and I’ve been grappling with that and processing it since I saw the movie a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to see the movie a second time, so this is based entirely off my first time seeing The Last Jedi. This movie was everything I wanted and more. It absolutely has faults worth talking about, but to me, the highs of TLJ far outweigh the lows. There were moments in this movie that I yelled in joy, smiled ear to ear and also cried on numerous occasions. For the first time since watching the original trilogy as a kid, I felt like I was watching a true Star Wars movie, with the original series characters, and the great new ones established in VII as well. The prequels have their moments, and Rogue One and Force Awakens were fun diversions in fan fiction, but to me, this movie felt true to what I love about Star Wars. I can’t wait to watch it again.
Tumblr media
Sometimes I just think to myself, “it’s really damn cool that I’m around at the same time as Christopher Nolan.” The guy will go down as an all-time great director, and I love that with Dunkirk he proved that he doesn’t need a high concept idea and a ton of exposition to sell it. All you need to tell a gripping story is a camera and a story with baked-in drama, like the evacuation of Dunkirk. The movie is almost a silent film with how little dialogue there is, relying solely on Hoyte van Hoytema’s beautiful cinematography and Nolan’s adherence to old-school film techniques, with as little CG as possible. Dunkirk makes for the most intense theater going experience I’ve probably had all year, and I fear that seeing it at home can never reach the levels of seeing it on the big screen. Regardless, Dunkirk is possibly Nolan’s best film yet, an exciting evolution of his directorial skill, and one of the best war films of all time.
Tumblr media
In my opinion, there was no greater surprise at the theater this year than Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’. A social horror film in the vein of such classics as ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Step-ford Wives’, and on the same level of quality as well. I’d also have to say that Get Out epitomizes the state of our country the best of any other movie I’ve seen this year, perfectly nailing racial tensions much more nuanced than your typical racist-redneck-murder-family horror movies ever could. I rewatched the movie again over Christmas (this and the Witch make great Christmas movies btw) and it reaffirmed how tightly written, acted and directed it truly is. Every setup has a fulfilling payoff, every character a great/exciting/terrifying moment, and it has one of the most subversive, ingenious endings I’ve seen of this, or any year.  Get out is a certified horror classic, and easily one of the best movies of the year.
Tumblr media
Coming-of-age stories are very often ‘my jam’, as I’m sure you could surmise from any number of posts on here from the past. What I loved so much about Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Call me by Your Name’ is the sincerity and honesty in every one of the characters in the movie. The two leads (played by Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer) wear their hearts on their sleeves, and soon find themselves in a summer love affair. What this movie captures so well is that feeling of young ‘love’, or at least infatuation with amazingly believable ease. It also features a moment between Timothée Chalamet’s character and his father (played by the always great Michael Stuhlbarg) that crushed me. It hit me right in the nexus of all my dad baggage, past and present, and turned me into a weeping mess. I aspire to be the kind of loving, understanding and wise father that Timothée Chalamet’s character is blessed with in this movie.
Tumblr media
Alright guys, time for my favorite movie of the year, and it’s easily Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction masterpiece: Blade Runner 2049. No movie transported me completely like this film did. The entire run time of the movie was almost like an out of body experience. It was surely aided by seeing it on the massive downtown IMAX screen, but when myself and a couple friends walked out of this movie, we were practically in shock. I’m sure I sound hyperbolic right now, but in my eyes this movie is a top-to-bottom cinematic masterpiece. It expands and even improves on themes and ideas that the first film only flirted with. It deepens the philosophy of the world in interesting ways, and does all this with a far more emotional core than the first ever had as well. I’d be remiss not talking about how beautiful this movie is as well. If Roger Deakins doesn’t win his first Cinematography Oscar for this film, somebody should get 25 to life. The second this movie ended, I knew it was my movie of the year, regardless of what else I saw in 2017. It’s a sequel for the ages, and a science fiction film that people decades from now will look back on with intrigue and wonder.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Thor Ragnarok
Brigsby Bear
Brawl in Cell Block 99
Okja
Baby Driver
Your Name
Logan
John Wick: Chapter 2
Spider-Man: Homecoming
I, Tonya
That’s going to do it for my top films of 2017, thanks so much for reading! If you have thoughts or opinions on my list, hit me up on Twitter or Facebook and let’s talk about them (unless it’s a bad Last Jedi take, those won’t do). It was incredibly hard to cut out some of the honorable mentions but overall I’m extremely happy with my list and all of the movies I was lucky enough to see this year (and lucky enough to have an awesome wife who understands and accepts my movie-going addiction!) Share this post with your friends if you’d like, and I hope you have a great 2018!
