I borrowed this one from @walkawaytall who took it from @gloriousclio - thank you, this looks fun!

1. Another time

First: This briefing felt like it had been going on for hours, but Leia was doing her level best to at least appear to be paying attention.

Last: And there would definitely need to be another time.

2. The doorway to a thousand churches

First: Han felt Chewie’s soft fur against his forehead as the Wookiee patted him, Han’s body steadied with a firm arm holding him upright and clasped to Chewie’s chest.

Last: “I’m here,” she said. “I’m not going anywhere without you.”

3. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

First: Leia’s eyes blinked open, and it took her a beat to remember precisely where she was.

Last: “I love you,” she said, and kissed him.

4. If we survived the great war

First: Luke took a sip of his kaffe and made a face.

Last: “Yeah,” he said, watching her mirror his own smile as they pulled apart. “Yeah, I think we do.”

5. One Half Won’t Do

First: Carlist Rieekan’s head was still reeling. What the hell happened? When did I lose control?

Last (so far, this is a WIP): “Yeah,” Han said. “Yeah, that’ll do nicely.”

I wonder when the Noldor looked around at their dwindling numbers and realized that they were dying faster than they could ever keep up with.

#tolkien #silmarillion #I actually have a lot of feelings about this #because the noldor that come over from Valinor are pretty much all you get for the first age’s long war #birth rates are also in the basement if they exist at all #elves don’t have children during war #even if the siege of Angband is peaceful enough to relax that custom #I still don’t think you would have many children #elves have known war before - we know they did before the great journey #but it’s also got to be sobering to realize that your casualty rates are literally unsustainable #(like so #the house of finwë probably isn’t a representative sample of casualty rates #but damn the big picture still can’t be good #we have one grandchild of finwë who survives to the second age out of fifteen and that’s a very very bad rate)#what does that DO to a people group #to go from immortal and undying #to accepting that your whole clan is getting whittled down chunk by chunk #when did they start realizing that even if they beat Morgoth #they wouldn’t recognize the survivors

on the one hand I agree the "demons run when a good man goes to war" line is on the cheesy side, as Doctor Who often can be; on the other hand people who mock it tend to do so not out of an understanding of the horrors of war but rather out of a "it is preferable to lay down and let the demons eat you" mentality and like, I am genuinely sorry you feel that way but also nah man I'm killing the demons.

#like. i think it is awful and tragic if someone must go to war to survive. also though i think surviving is great and we should do it
