Ok, but for context, this literally happened with the USA and Canadian border!

“Fort Blunder” began construction in 1816 by the USA, explicitly as protection against Canada (which was then very much a British territory).

The only issue is……… The agreed upon border between Canada and the USA was the 45th parallel.

And mistakes in surveying in the 1770s meant the first site of construction was three quarters of a mile (1.2km)…… inside Canada. Which they only confirmed after construction had commenced.

Construction thus stopped, and the site was abandoned.

……

Up until 1842, when in the Webster-Ashburton Treaty (which ratified multiple things between the countries) both parties agreed to honor the first, mistaken survey at that site, incorporating that extremely tiny blip into the official border.

(No clue why, since the site as said had been abandoned by thE USA, but eh, it was a mile of difference….)

Fort Montgomery was built at the site, officially on USA soil, in 1844

And do not get me started on the tiny parcel of land that borders Canada and the Great Lakes, but no USA land, and yet is part of Minnesota….
