Rewatched "The Sword in the Stone" and God, Tristan and Isolde are just so.....
Aside from the rare display of balls from BBC, to completely do away with their tragic love story and make them both bicons and full criminals, damn, it's so rare for a TV het couple to be so Valid, and yet. Them. Crime-married, running a smuggling op, they get swept up into a Clusterfuck by the very king they are stealing from, and Tristan still brings the bae flowers just 'cause and straight-up says he don't give even half a fuck that he lost cargo as long as Isolde is safe. Like. Damn. Respect.
Also, Isolde is just fine, she passed out from pain, Gaius and Merlin fixed her right up, and now her and Tristan are running a Vaguely Legal Business in which now they just smuggle stuff from other kingdoms, which Arthur politely ignores in exchange for nitty-gritty details on the state of trade, like the strangest, most well-meant form of political corruption ever.
Arthur: Tristan, Isolde, good to see you both again, I trust you're staying out of trouble......and not illegally transporting those three crates of Mercian spices I see in your wagon.
Tristan: *pulls an oilcloth over the crates* Spices? I don't see any spices here, do you, Isolde?
Isolde: *holds up a sheaf of trade details from Mercia, Essetir, and Gwynedd* No, Tristan, I certainly don't.
Arthur: .........
Arthur: *takes the papers* You have got to stop doing this.
Tristan and Isolde: Doing what?
Arthur: *leaves*
(Also, no, I'm not having Crime Ring AU thoughts, pfft, no way.)
*sighs* *cracks knuckles* how dare you somehow know all of my weaknesses when it comes to headcanons
listen,
Tristan and Isolde are Arthur's unofficial spies. they created the camelot spy network. they weaved those webs like Arachne herself. the trade papers? just the beginning.
sure, sure, Tristan always tells Isolde that their business with camelot is a short one, that they'll only stay here for a little bit then get back to what they do best, that he only agreed to another month because Arthur turns a blind eye to their dirty money.
Isolde only rolls her eyes because she knows better. this is her husband we're talking about, someone she knows inside and out. Isolde has memorized his mannerisms until she could see them without even looking at him. Isolde could time how long her husband will deny ever caring about the "foolish king" and admit that he had grown fond of the young man.
Tristan as he is arranging a bouquet for his wife: "All I'm saying is that the kid needs a better system for information. He relies on us too much despite our stay being temporary."
Isolde mapping out Essetir's new trade details: "Maybe he enjoys the company."
Tristan: "He's a blue blood, darling. I highly doubt that we would be someone he'd loved to hang out with. Now, daffodils or lillies?"
also: Tristan called Arthur son once, and Arthur just about cried on the spot ("it's the DUST!"). Tristan begins to realize that he has basically adopted Arthur and realizes that he quite likes parenting the kid.

final thought and I will shut up — also deeply amused that Amis can count on his hands how many people he's killed in his 100+ years of existence, yet he ends up companion to the HoF and Inquisitor who kill so many fucking people just in a day. like, this man only fights when forced to defend himself or others, endeavors not to lethally wound his opponent, and heals them afterward. and he gets attached to two murder machines. buck wild.

"Hey, hey! It's been a while? Are things going well? We should talk over a good bite to eat! Can't be talking on an empty stomach you know!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The goddess turns her head to see the energic person near her. She hasn't had the time to really get to know Amber but seemed like a sweetheart. "Oh! It's nice to see you." She gives Amber her usual warm smile. Isolde doesn't require eating as a normal function, but she certainly loves a good meal regardless.
"Food sounds lovely." She couldn't simply turn away a good meal. "I'm doing fine as of late."

inquisitor: what is the hero of ferelden like? alistair: they sacrificed isolde guerrin to save connor. it was fine though because they gave me 24 sugar cakes to keep my mouth shut. wynne: they called knight-commander greagoir a 'fucking idiot' right in the middle of abominations attacking the circle. I wasn't even mad because they suddenly had The Rose of Orlais and gifted it to me. zevran: they didn't even hesitate punching caladrius, he was finished before we could even join in. they gave me beautiful dalish gloves. leliana: they called the revered mother in the lothering chantry a 'greedy old hag'. she got me my favourite flower, andraste's grace, immediately after, how strange :) oghren: you all got gifts???

How about Viego, Hecarim and Shieda Kayn dating S/O, who is usually kind and calm, but goes feral in battle?
Oho~ for sure!
Hope it's fine!
VIEGO,HECARIM AND KAYN WITH A BATTLE FERAL S/O
Tumblr media
You reminded him a lot of Isolde;a graceful person, kind to others and mostly to him. With you he felt the happiest man he could be. He cherished you like a delicate rose;but as you know, rose has thorns as well and you had and many. When you rushed forward Viego wnated to stop you;his life with you flashing in front of him;then he heard a scream and blood splattered on the groud.  It was not yours. It was the enemy's. -ah..ahahaha magnificent my love!!-  The man ran towards you to give you a big hug;not caring about staining himself. He was mesmerized by your fierceness. Now he could breathe a bit easier; knowing you could fight for yourself.
Tumblr media
It was a contrast to see a sweet soul like you around someone like Hercarim;an entity devoted to bring death whenever he went. Yet you two were quite the pair, a protector and the soothing presence. He didn't react much when he saw you going feral on your enemies;quite the opposite actually;in his heart pride swell for you. Hecarim kept watching you till he charged in battle by your side. -I felt like you had it in you. I'm pleased.- His voice reached your ears;a smirk on your lips as you two shared this bloodbath.
Tumblr media
In the order rumors were spread about you and Kayn, a ruthless shadow assassin and a sweet nurturing soul like you. Everyone was asking how he managed to score someone like you.  Deep down you knew Kayn deserved love and appreciation. Though Kayn knew your secret. He knew how cold you were when killing your enemies. He could watch you step out the shadows and take down your target with the same sicko smile he had. -Oh, look at you~ Knew you were worthy of me- He came to your side, his lips on your bloody cheek. -Shall we play a game? The one who kills less gets to clean the room of the other for a week - His taunt made you burn with the desire to show him what you were made of. You both stepped into your shadows and started the body count.

favorite queer retellings/interpretations of arthurian legend
hello anon!
this simple question has a complicated answer if only bc some authors seem to have created queer stories unintentionally! & i like them! i'll include quotes from my suggestions below a cut as there will be some mild spoilers but that may help you decide what stories suit your tastes as they vary a lot. you can also just go ahead & assume kay & agravaine are always queer (bc they are, not accepting crit) which makes narrowing down the list difficult for me.
TL;DR: Camelot 3000 Mike W. Barr & Brian Bolland, Exiled From Camelot/Trial of Sir Kay/Hunt for Hart Royal by Cherith Baldry, Spear Nicola Griffith, Guinevere/Morgan/Morgawse by Lavinia Collins, The Queen's Knight by Marvin Borowsky, Arthur Rex by Thomas Berger, The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf.
Camelot 3000 by Mike W. Barr & Brian Bolland: reincarnation story with transman sir tristan coming to terms with his gender & sexuality so he can accept isolde's love for him & reciprocate. it's really beautifully written imo plus the art is so 80s & my exact cup of tea. it's dated in some of its handling of the subject matter but i think it was done thoughtfully for the time.
Tumblr media
Exiled From Camelot, The Trial of Sir Kay, The Hunt for The Hart Royal by Cherith Baldry: the way baldry writes is overall my favorite ever but her kay is unparalleled he is everything to me. unequivocally disinterested in women (without misogyny, very important note). codependent on gawain if not fully in love with him the crown style. lots of hurt/comfort, kissing, holding & worrying over each other. they exchange a ring for god's sake. in exiled it says ragnelle was the only woman for gawain (based) but after she passed he's all kay's basically so this checks all my boxes. love wins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spear by Nicola Griffith: butch perceval pulling bitches chapter after chapter it's glorious. ends up settling down with nimue. bonus throuple arthur/guin/lance with a very sweet moment with lance talking to percy about them both. no homophobia (external nor internal) to be found its very enjoyable. beautiful prose. audiobook was wonderfully narrated by the author, which is how i read it, thus i've written out a quote here:
"Secrets may prove a burden. So...Lance, my mother is indeed Merlin's sister but I am not Merlin's sister's son." Lance frowned. "I don't understand..." "I am not his sister's son." His eyes stretched wide. He reassessed the line of her jaw, the size of her hands. She nodded. Then he reassessed how she and Nimue sat with one another. This time, Nimue nodded.
Guinevere, Morgan, & Morgawse by Lavinia Collins: these aren't my favorite (did gawain really dirty, deal breaker) but the fact is they have multiple explicitly queer characters including: kay, lancelot, morgawse, agravaine, isolde, dinadan, etc. plus there were several poly scenes including one with guin/lance/kay, another morgawse/lot/visiting king/queen swinging. wild all around everyone is sleeping with everyone no character is unaccounted for. be warned these books are extremely graphic in every conceivable way. queer solidarity in the face of homophobia is a theme throughout. kay punches phobic urien & agravaine "saw nothing." shh its fine urien sucks. this hilarious convo between agravaine & morgawse kills me.
Tumblr media
The Queen's Knight by Marvin Borowsky: an interesting retelling in which mordred is a grown up warlord right from the outset. he also happens to be queer. mind this came out in the 50s & contains pederasty, but mordred does later have a loving tragic relationship with fellow knight calogrenant (yay crackships<3), which others were aware of & helped conceal (kay, for example). agravaine is also queer, he only joins arthur's forces bc lancelot asks him to & continues to fixate on him for the whole book. typical.
Tumblr media
Arthur Rex by Thomas Berger: so this book is super homophobic. but it's so homophobic that it circles back around to being pretty queer bc berger saw queerness everywhere, apparently. but the green knight is purposefully queer, so the kissing game's gender-role-reversal/bisexuality....escalates. david lowery wishes. both gawain & arthur are pretty homoromantic with lancelot to the point the narrative calls attention to it & then no-homos their closeness. agravaine appears to be queer too. he's the only unmarried brother (claims to be in love with guinevere but i don't buy it), he wants lancelot so bad he gets all tongue tied & stupid around him...wrecked.
Tumblr media
The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf: what's this? agravaine again? so in this version, lancelot is named bedwyr (inspired by mary stewart's quadrilogy) but he's lance in all but name. anyway agravaine constantly beefs with guinevere for his attention...& loses. plus it's implied agravaine slept with lamorak before his mother which is hysterical. (my fave crackship is thriving<3) agravaine topples the empire for a much older straight man. it would be funny if it wasn't so sad. let's give it up for problematic jealous slutty queers.
Tumblr media
these are just the retellings i have read & liked. there are more on my retellings list but those were suggestions from others i haven't gotten to yet with the exception of dishonorable mention to the winter knight by jes battis. it has gay gawain & his bestie transgirl bi kay in that but the writing style was unbearable to me unfortunately i'm so sorry i just didn't like it. anyway thanks for the ask!

Me anytime Arthur Interacts with someone older then him: “Omg a parent figure 🙌🏽”
Queen annis even though he killed her husband, but it’s fine because she forgave him even said she’d hate to lose him?MOTHER FIGURE‼️‼️‼️
Elena’s dad because he told uther he should be proud of him? FATHER FIGURE 🔥🔥🔥
And the new development of Tristan and Isolde bc of a TikTok I saw even though they(Tristan)spent half the time hating him,but it’s okay because in the end they fought back to back? ADOPTIVE PARENTS🗣️🗣️🗣️
Hunith because everything. MOTHER.IN.LAW💥💥💥
hell even balinor for the 0.3 seconds they interacted because not only is Arthur his son in law but he healed Arthur knowing who he was(also this because he immediately recognized him even though he had to run away while Arthur was a infant) even though he hated uther and everything to do with him. FATHER IN LAW👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Anyway all this to say Arthur and his sad puppy eyes get everyone old enough to be his parents to forgive his wrongdoings and want to adopt him.

inspired by this. diluc x reader though he's not really here.
your eldest daughter, dorothea, has had all of life's finest pleasures handed to her. a large room with tall ceilings. a four post bed that's made for her every day. tutoring from the finest governess in mondstadt. access to nearly every book in teyvat. as many canvases as she desires.
your eldest daughter, dorothea, is not the finest seamstress. even in her old age, adelinde has spent the time repairing garments when they fray or when buttons come loose. and if adelinde cannot fix it, the garment is sent to the tailor and returns, good as new, within the fortnight.
however, your eldest daughter, dorothea, is obsessed with fashion. she pours over the magazines, takes special trips to visit the tailor, watches him with rapt attention as he takes measurements and selects garments. the best she can do, however, is wear them and truly appreciate their craftsmanship.
when mother's day comes about, dorothea is nervous. she bites at her nails, though she keeps their long length, and twists her fingers together throughout all of breakfast. breakfast is nothing short of a feast of your favorite foods: waffles topped with syruped berries, thin slices of meat and freshly squeezed juices.
your middle (by two hours), isolde, excitedly tells you she "picked the berries with papa!" and drowns you in a hugs and kisses. you accept each one of them and return them in kind, always willing to give into the touchiness of your middle. dorothea was touchy once, too, but teenage angst has claimed her in the meantime.
your youngest, heiro, has presented you with a painting. the background is an artfully done landscape, probably by his eldest sister, as his three year old motor skills have only allowed for him to draw stick figures. there's you, holding hands with him, who holds hands with his twin sister isolde, who holds hand with dorothea, who holds hands with diluc. (there's a fourteen year age gap between dorothea and the twins, who had been nothing short of a blessed surprise.)
dorothea is anxious, as she presents you with a box. you accept it with grace, and undo the ribbon around it. Inside of it is a dress. a simple, white dress with fine, albeit shaky stitching in some places. there's greenery embroidered throughout, in neat, perfect stiches.
you are, without a shadow of a doubt, speechless. your fingers dance over the embroidery, mouth open in awe.
"do you like it?" dorothea asks, voice small.
you glance up at your nervous daughter. "it's stunning, dorothea. i absolutely adore it. can i give you a hug?"
dorothea nods, and comes closer, falling into your embrace.
"i love you," you remind her. "thank you."
"love you too," dorothea mumbles back. "i had augustine help."
pulling away, you smile up at her. "so that's what you've been spending so much time doing?"
dorothea nods, sheepish.
"i'll have to go put it on," you say, rising from the breakfast table. "but i'll be right back down, and how about we go on a walk?"
red brushes dorothea's cheeks, and she nods. you excuse yourself, and head upstairs to get changed.

Out of curiosity is there any story where someone sets out to bring someone back from the dead and it just goes well? It always seems to end in the person coming back wrong, a last minute failure, or realizing that actually letting go is the right move (or using their one shot at resurrection to save someone else).
I have nothing against the trope, the inevitability of death and its permanence is a very human thing and it’s great when stories address shit like that. Like, it’s generally pretty fucking narratively satisfying, and no story I’m thinking about right now would be better for the original person’s resurrection.
It’s just something I’ve noticed, and it’s prevalent enough that, like, from the moment it was introduced in the beginning of D&D Honor Among Thieves I had a pretty damn good idea of where the resurrection tablet plot was headed. Ironically, of all the places to subvert that trope, a D&D movie would have been a prime place to do it. D&D characters die and come back fine all the time (though of course the classic Revivify only works within a minute of death and so doesn’t quite fit the bill for “a quest to bring someone back”)
It’s everywhere. The Elric brothers fail to resurrect their mother and lose parts of themselves in the process. Isolde’s spirit stabs Viego through his selfish little heart and he joins her in death. The third wish with the monkey’s paw is to put their dead son to rest once more. Gilgamesh accepts his mortality, and the mortality of Enkidu. And Orpheus looks back.
