"The Secret of Nimh" is such a fascinating adaptation. None of the magic stuff was in the original story but it Works. Bluth and his team had 90 minutes to tell a story and needed a magic macguffin to add drama and solve the conflict in that time. So instead of Jenner's team just being a rival group that dies offscreen and draws attention to the farm, they're actively interfering and trying to get the magic amulet.
and the magic stuff is nowhere in the original book, but like. I don't think Bluth and his team would have done as well telling that story. But they can tell THIS story very well. So they told this story. and they get some really good visuals out of it.
it reminds me of tapping Peter Jackson to do LOTR. You're getting the gorefest horror comedy guy to do a giant fantasy epic? And he did! He told that story his own way. He restrained himself enormously but bits and pieces of his sensibilities are all over those movies. He told the story only he could tell well, using someone else's material as inspiration.
also the final dramatic fight against the villain is over with one stab to the gut. they don't play up the death or the final blow, just make it clear that he's fucked up and then the hero throws his sword away. it's a very light touch on including violence, it's interesting.

The book vs. movie of The Secret of NIMH is so flipping funny.
The book: "There's these rats that escaped from a laboratory. They're very smart and they can help Mrs. Frisby move her house and save her family from the plow. There's this one rebel group led by Jenner, but they disappeared before the current events and don't matter."
The movie: "Nicodemus is a straight-up sorcerer. Jenner is actively plotting an assassination attempt on him. Mrs. Brisby literally saves her own house with a magical amulet. None of this is explained."

NIMH AU: Just Say Yes!
Tumblr media
For my "Mrs. Brisby and the Bund of NIMH" AU, I used The Secret of NIMH's BLUTHLESS Sequel villain song "Just Say Yes" and made a lot of changes to connect with Jenner's character. I was listening to the song, and then "In the Dark of the Night" from the animated film Anastasia. Some bits based on Hellfire from Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame", and "Be Prepared" from "The Lion King".
Think of this song taking place Jenner seduces Elizabeth Brisby to be his. Imagine PAUL SHENAR'S rich and sonorous voice sing this XD
Let me know what you think, on the comments! Is there favorite parts of lyrics? What part stands out for Jenner's character? Any improvements needed? What scenario you have thought for this musical note?
Life was far too short,
From the very start.
Since the tortures from those imps,
I began to grow
Little did they know
I had my own plans from them
They thought I was tamed,
Fools, fallen in my little game!
Until this all became mine,
They all do as I say!
No one stands in my way,
In my way, all here will be happy
OR I have them slaughtered
I can do as I please,
I can change everything with ease
(For so fair,
Fit for power~)
I control the wind and weather!
We can rule all together
If you come with me,
You will be happy,
WE will be happy
When you come with me
Be my wife
Change my life
With all we can see
Just say yes, Elizabeth!
Truth be told,
I too grieved,
Her and me
Me and her
Her death broken us up
O, please don’t shed a tear
We have another chance, my dear
Time flies and memory falters,
We look to the sky say our prayers,
Elizabeth my dear, don’t leave me
(For so fair,
Fit for power~)
Take what you can when you can!
Join me in my grand plan
Bestow them an agony,
Farewell, Jonathan Brisby!
(For so fair,
Fit for power~)
With all became mine,
Everything will be fine
Crossing the oceans of time,
Achieved ambitions are no crime!
I’ll reduce your pain to bits,
As long as you just say yes!
You will be happy,
WE will be happy
If you just say YES
(For so fair~ for so fair~ Fitting for power~)
O, poor widow (For so fair~)
Your eyes a soul’s broken window,
Just a tragic mess (yet so fair~)
I welcome you to the greatest next life
To the brand new, hopeful life (Fitting for power~)
Let us be happy,
For eternity!
Perfect immortal bliss
Beyond measure
Purest pleasure!
If you just say yes~!
(For so fair,
Fit for power~)
It’s our chance to rule (For so fair, fitting for power~)
Don’t let it slip away,
Don’t be so scared,
I promise it won’t hurt,
You will not regret
(For so fair, for so fair, for so far~ Fit for power~!)
If you just say yes~
JUST SAY YES~!

I love your post about Tula, I just finished the latest ep of burrows end and I am SCROUNGING for theories.
What do you think she was ‘fundamentally lying’ about?? I’ve seen a couple posts floating around:
- one was how maybe Geoffrey could’ve been a bad husband and Tula didn’t save him because of it (maybe killed him?)
- Another was, maybe the Blue (radiation?) is killing her to use it?
- Another good one, was maybe Tula isn’t their (Jaysohn and Lila’s) bio mother.
I don’t have a very good or original educational guess, but I don’t think she killed Geoffrey. I do think she knows what did, and she’s lying so her children aren’t vengeful. She doesn’t want her children chasing power, to avenge their dad, or getting caught up in what he was deeply in.
I think it’s been said before, but in some of Geoffrey’s art he has a little grass belt, and the only other stoats we’ve seen have tools/clothes, was in Last Bast. (I can see the connection there, but we’ve also seen Viola have ‘accessories’, so it could just be a red herring.)
I think maybe Tula knows more about Last Bast (or humans) than she lets on, possibly from Geoffrey (if the grass belt is a connection.) I think Geoffrey saw something, or knew something in Last Bast, and ran. Eventually, he found the red Warren, fell in love, and started a family.
Now with an invested interest to keep his family safe, he’s using what he learned in Last Bast in the Red Warren, which somehow got him killed. (By a human? Maybe? The humans that saw Thorn seemed more interested than expressing a want to kill him - maybe humans want to test the stoats for radiation sickness, or something like that?) it’s giving watership down meets Chernobyl, the natural world clashing with human disasters.
Just some thoughts! I feel like there’s so many clues and pieces on the board, but no lines connecting them. There’s an allegory that I’m not catching, and it’s driving me NUTS.
What do you make of this? :)
(sorry for the long ask! Just excited!)
omg this is my very first ask and I'm trying to be normal about it
So, it's been a few days and I've been going over this in my head and here are my conclusions to your lovely, lovely ask <3
The lie is probably something incredibly mundane.
Adults lie to children all the time. Lila is going through what every child goes through as they become a teenager--she's starting to see the cracks between reality, truth, and the fictions adults use to process an unfair world.
I think it is entirely possible that when the lie is revealed, an adult audience might go, "Oh, that's not a big a deal," while Lila overreacts with betrayal.
It's entirely possible Geoffrey is from Last Bast.
The only thing I'm basing this on, besides character art, is that Tula is based on Mrs. Brisby from Secret of NIMH and Last Bast is giving me Rats of NIMH vibes, not secret authoritarian cult vibes (which is an entirely different post that I'll probably never write). I mean, the Rats had magic and electricity.
Also, Brian might be analogous to Jenner, the power hungry Rat, the First Stoats might be like Nicodemus, just like Bennett is probably Justin.
Did I want Bennett to be a fuckable version of Justin for Tula? Yes. But that's only because my childself wanted Justin and Mrs. Brisby to end up together. Baby Banshee didn't understand why that wouldn't work. She wanted love to win.
Anyway.
Based on how much the Red Warren Family popped off against Last Bast during this episode, I don't know if there will be more Secret of NIMH elements playing out. It's possible Tula could bring up Geoffrey and get confirmation on that but I don't think it's important to our stouts anymore.
But wouldn't it be interesting if Tula knew about Last Bast before they arrived? Didn't someone say something about lies of omission?
Mrs. Brisby's character arc is about having enough courage to move her family while her son has pneumonia. She confronts an owl, a cat, and a power hungry rat who deliberately puts moving the mouse family's home in jeopardy, in order to keep her family safe.
During most of the story, her children are in the dark about what she's doing to keep them alive and protect their future.
What an amazing archetype as Tula's touchstone.
One of the great things about the d20 campaigns is not only the mashup but how the players resolve the mashup after making a mess. I might be seeing lots of NIMH being laid down, now that the Watership Down portion is somewhat resolved but I'm prepared to be totally wrong as maybe our vicious varmints take us in a new direction.
Like I said--obsessed with Tula =^_^=

A Year of Animation Day 48: The Secret of NIMH
Date: February 17, 2025
Day: 48
Content Watched: The Secret of NIMH
Year: 1982
Rating: G
Run Time: 1 hour 22 minutes
Tumblr media
Ernest and Celestine gave me some serious Secret of Nimh vibes, so it felt like a good follow-up. I loved this movie as a kid. I didn't own it, but I borrowed it from the neighbor a lot, even though it scared the crap out of me, and, if I recall, I kind of had trouble following it. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, and I'm curious as to whether it holds up, of if this is going to be another Swan Princess.
Starting off, in reference to the animation, you can immediately tell this is a Don Bluth film because like Disney, Miyikazi, and Dreamworks, he has a style. If you've seen Fievel, you can recognize his mice anywhere. All this being said, Bluth did work at Disney for about twenty years before starting his own company, so if this feels at all Disney-esque to you, that's why. Furthermore, this LA Times article quotes Bluth is several places as wanting to create high quality films rather than focusing on profits. He also states his disappointment in many of the sequels to films that he made, which he was not involved in. The point is: the man wanted to created beautiful animated movies, and it shows.
According to the article, The Secret of Nimh is the first full-length animated feature Bluth's company put out. It's based on the novel Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O'Brian, and I do have to wonder what the decision was behind changing the protagnist's name from Mrs. Frisby to Mrs. Brisby. But seeing as I don't have many other issues with it, the movie holds up. It is, like the Disney films I've watched, beautifully animated. The backgrounds are gorgeous and personally, I think it puts Cinderella to shame. The characters look sharper, and though this could easily be due to Cinderella's animation being three decades older, the scenes also feel busier.
I mentioned in my review of Cinderella that the movie feels a little.... empty. The characters feel a bit like they're rattling around the big house, and the party for the prince doesn't feel particularly well attended. But scenes in The Secret of Nimh feel busy. There are usually multiple characters on camera, often three or four. And the scenes with the most characters present--the meeting of the rats and the moving of Mrs. Brisby's house--are shot in ways that show how many character's are present. I don't remember how many wide shots there were here (I didn't think to look), but at the very least, the camera cuts between different groups of rats who are obviously in different places in the set, so we get a feeling of people filling the space. Cinderella didn't do this, and I don't think Sleeping Beauty did either.
I also think the busy-ness of the movie has something to do with the plot. My husband told me that Don Bluth's goal was to permanantly scar little children, and I'd say this storyline is more intense than any of the Disney films I've seen so far including Zootopia, despite the fact that it is rated G. It seems there's an action scene about every ten minutes--Mrs. Brisby and Jeremy escaping the cat, Mrs. Brisby and Auntie Shrew taking down the tractor, Mrs. Brisby running away from the guard when she goes to visit the rats in the rosebush, the flashback in which the rats and the mice escape from the lab, Mrs. Brisby drugging the cat, Mrs. Brisby trying to get out of the cage in the farmer's house, the battle between Justin and Jenner, and the attempt to stop Mrs. Brisby's house from sinking into the mud with her children inside. In contrast, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella each have... one action scene? So the plot more naturally lends itself to a lot of things happening on screen at once.
And I know said this movie was scary for me as a kid, and that I had trouble following it, but I think that may have been what I liked about it. As we saw with A Scanner Darkly, I don't have problems with complicated plotlines, and while I'm picky about which horror stories I consume, there are plenty of scary things out there that I enjoy. I have to wonder if, even as a child, the complexity of this storyline held my attention better than the simplistic boy-meets-girl plot of Cinderella. It's also possible that I liked it more because the characters really felt like characters. Sure, Jenner is just kind of greedy and a basic evil Bad Guy, but Auntie Shrew, Mrs. Brisby, Jeremy, Justin, Mr. Ages, Nicodemus, and each of the individual kids (except maybe Timmy) all seem to have their own personalities, as opposed to the stepsisters in Cinderella who are very obviously mere caricatures (for that matter, Cinderella herself and the prince don't have much to them either.)
But let's talk for a minute about why this movie is scary. Because I think a lot of that lies in the animation. For one, it's literally darker. It uses a lot of dark colors and a lot of things are happening in shadow. But I think the other key, which I also think is the most brilliant part of this film's animation, are the lighting effects. I don't mean the lighting like I talked about in Cinderella. This movie doesn't blow me away with the way scenes are lit. But it uses light to emphasize things. Nicodemus and the Great Owl both have glowing eyes. Nicodemus's book and giant looking glass also glow. And at the end, and Mrs. Brisby activates the stone, she radiates light. The general darkness of the film makes these points of light really stand out as important and honestly, I think the contrast adds to the scariness. The glowing things look out of place, and therefore should be feared. Because as scary as Dragon, the cat is? I thought both the Great Owl and Nicodemus were scarier.
Tumblr media
Finally, I want to bring up the brief bubble animation which occurs while the Brisby kids are being tended to by Auntie Shrew, and they're doing laundry or something. It's a pretty short animation--the scene opens with the reflections of the characters in bubbles--but I noticed that Cinderella and Dumbo both had animations like this, and I found the prevelance interesting. I'm guessing it was a way for animators to do interesting things and show off their prowess, kind of like having an airbender with long hair battling multiple guys wearing capes. Also, in case you wanted to know, I looked it up. NIMH stands for National Institute of Mental Health. Just in case the movie itself wasn't enough nightmare fuel. ;)
Tommorrow, we'll begin exploring Aaron Ehasz' most recent world of elemental magic.

I like both "The Secret of NIMH" and "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" equally.
But if I could but the two together, I would make it a love story between Mrs. Brisby/ Frisby and Justin... or another character.
The main conflict of moving house is still there and probably Jenner (him leaving the group in the book was a smart thing to do) but it has more romance too.
Basically Mrs. Brisby/ Frisby learns to move on from Jonathan's death and find love again, either platonically or romantically.
Also a story that doesn't lean a little heavy on Jonathan's legacy. It always makes me sad that Mrs. Brisby only got help because she's Jonathan's widow. If she was any other mouse, her house would've been destroyed and Timothy would die.
