Searching for roleplays
I'm searching for some new rps, especially the following fandoms:
School Spirits -If we are doubling up to play each other's love intrests, Mine will be Wally though we may be able to work something out if he is your only love interest too, i do prefer our rps to take place in the same universe so i do not wish to set both sides in different time lines. if you ware just looking for oc or muse interactions do not worry about that part. with My OC i'd like to play around with the idea that she can see ghosts due to being resuscitated, her gramdmother used to say that lifted the vail between life and death
Gilmore girls -If we double up my love interest will be jess, once again just like above if you don't have another love interest we may be able to work something out, I adore rping in stars hollow so i prefer to do the Chilton years then we can move up to the yale years if you want I understand that some love interests don't come in until Yale, and I'm more then okay with altering that so that those characters can go to Chilton. if you ware just looking for oc or muse interactions do not worry about that part My OC is Rory's cousin I have watched all seasons

thinking about how people arguing about rory and jess doesn’t have a “you jump, i jump” moment but like. have you ever been 17 and a guy bought your home made basket for $90 and sat with you on a bridge by the lake, look into your eyes and told you “you know, ernest only has lovely things to say about you”? because tbh, it changes everything.

Do you ever wonder how Jess would have felt if he knew that Luke essentially chose him over Lorelai once? Jess knows Luke would do anything for her most of the time, and yet Luke basically gave Lorelai the silent treatment for an entire summer because of what she said after the car accident. And yet I don't think Jess knew that. How bowled over would he have been? I don't think he could even fathom the idea that Luke (or maybe even anyone) could care about him that much, until maybe years later.

Why do so many Gilmore girls fans like Tristan? I mean I love chad michael murray but Tristan is an awful character. He was constantly an asshole to Rory. He harassed he multiple times even after she CLEARLY told him she was not interested and continued being a dick and persuing her when she got a boyfriend. Also he was unnecessarily mean to Dean who was just protecting his girlfriend. Honestly if he was played by some non conventionally attractive actor he'd be called a creep ( which he was) but since it was Chad Micheal Murray people think it's charming. If this isn't pretty privilege then what is?.

I somehow got warped into listening to a Gilmore Girls podcast where they discussed the infamous "I know you" line with two r*gan fans and only one lit fan and of course, everyone was against it. So it got me wondering what your opinion on that line is, specifically? I never considered it bad or even "manipulative" of Jess because even if you were to argue that he "tried to guilt Rory for not being 'a perfect version of herself that he made up'", that doesn't really hold up within the narrative in season 6 when Jess pretty much leaves her alone afterwards? And many like to argue that Jess just knew "a version" of Rory about 1.5 years before seeing her again when she dropped out of Yale, but that alone isn't a) a significant amount of time that has passed, and b) doesn't negate the fact that Jess could obviously tell that Rory was just lost and aimless, not that he was angry with her because she dropped out of Yale and decided to pursue something else because obviously, Rory had not taken up any other route after the season 5 finale, she had just become aimless. So yeah, if you'd be interested about discussing this, I'd love to hear your opinion on it
i imagine the people who say they’re against it only do so because they’re biased and just… don’t understand what jess meant by it. the bottom line is, he does know her. he knows her ambitions and life goals—to become an overseas correspondent, the next christiane amanpour, to attend an ivy league school and do well there. academia has always been a passion of rory’s; you could even go so far as to identify it as a piece of her personality, so the fact that she’d dropped out of a school she fought tooth and nail to get into was definitely alarming (to everyone, not just to jess). of course he was gonna ask her what the hell was going on??? he was concerned. beyond that, everything he said was true, and you can tell from rory’s facial expressions that she knows it. also, the fact that this conversation gets her to go back to yale says everything. i don’t understand why people are so against it. like, literati aside it’s what gets rory back on track, so the fact that people resent it even as a narrative device when these are the same people who hate on rory for dropping out and “spiralling” just baffles me. anyway, i don’t at all see any part of the speech as manipulative or guilt-tripping. i see it as someone who loves rory and understands her questioning why she’s settling for a guy who drags her down and a lifestyle that doesn’t at all suit her, nor compliment her interests. there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

No literally, your tags are so right. Rory’s love for Jess is on such a different level in my opinion and I don’t mean this in a condescending way towards the other two (as much as I might dislike them, it’s not the point I’m trying to make) but their entire course and journey sets them apart for me. Like there are so many aspects of them that aren’t like Rogan or Rory and Dean that makes Literati stand out all the more, if that makes sense. Such as the fact that Rory never outright said ‘I love you’ to Jess, unlike when she blurted it out to Dean or told Logan she loved him or just the simple fact that Dean and Logan got multiple chances while Jess didn’t. There’s something so quietly significant about that to me, for some reason that I can’t put into words. Like I’m not seeing it as Rory loving him less than the others but in a way I can’t quite explain yet, it almost makes me feel like she possibly loved him the most. And it scared her. Especially taking into account s4 (peak literati angst ofc), she could care and love him all she wanted but the fact was that he wasn’t reliable, unpredictable, full of constant “changes” which was no longer something Rory wanted. But something always lingered there for her with him, no matter how many years passed. And well, ofc I don’t find this good that she did but I almost forgot to acknowledge that Jess was also the ONLY boyfriend she never cheated on. It’s just another interesting little detail to add to whatever rambling this is, I dunno what this even is but it’s been in my head for days. And I still don’t think I organized it or worded it correctly but just thought I’d leave it here b/c why not? I love hearing your thoughts anyway!
NO YEAH YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!! I've been trying to put this idea into words for awhile now. Rory and Jess's love was just different. Like you said, he was the only one she never cheated on (also the only one she cheated with in the original series), and he was the only one she didn't give a second chance. My thoughts are like yours, like it scared her to risk getting hurt like that again. Because Jess leaving seemed to hurt worse than any breakup with Dean or Logan. She could take getting hurt by Dean or Logan again, but getting hurt by Jess would destroy her. And she needed a stability that season 4 Jess couldn't provide, and by the time he was stable and secure enough for them to be able to work things out, she was with Logan. So despite her obviously still caring about him (because hey, she went to Philadelphia, she read The Subject, she kissed him back!) she couldn't do anything with the feelings she had for him in that moment. Then in AYITL, she relies on Jess for help and he gives her encouragement and despite it being years later, they still have a relationship that's unique to them and different than the relationships she has with Dean or Logan or even Paul at that point.
Rory's love for Jess was just... totally unlike the love she had for anyone else, and I think that's why they always come back to each other.

TREEHOUSE — JESS MARIANO
Tumblr media
masterlist
pairing: jess mariano x reader
description: you’d be lying if you said you didn’t enjoy jess’ flirty teasing. he’d be lying if he said that you didn’t make him uncharacteristically mushy.
warnings: swearing n fluff!!!, that’s all folks
author’s note: ok so i caved and started rewatching GG already — i had this idea and had to run with it! let me know what u think x
“Wow Y/N, we have got to stop bumping into each other like this!”
You looked up, rolling your eyes at the smirking boy before you as you placed down your book, “Oh yes,” you quipped sarcastically, “Such a shock to see you at your uncle’s diner that you live above and work at. Bonus points for you literally choosing to come over to my table, by the way. Usually you save our tantalising small talk for when I come to the counter for a drink.”
This only emboldened his smirk, and he glanced back to see Luke quirking his brow at his usual game — he always distracted himself from helping out by busying himself with talking to you.
In seconds he’d sat himself down in the empty chair opposite you, leaning on your closed book and staring so intently into your eyes you felt your heartbeat quicken immensely.
“What do you want, Mariano?”
“Ouch, last name?” he pouted, “And here I thought we were friends.”
Your heart was racing at how close to you he seemed to be, but his assertion of your supposed ‘friendship’ dulled this a little.
It infuriated you that he spent so much time flirting, and then every other moment acting like his having any romantic interest in you was a ridiculous suggestion.
“Friends, hm?”
In all the time he’d been loitering around, lending you books, stealing your books, making you coffee and all-round just finding any reason to be near you, Jess had never been certain his attraction to you was reciprocated either.
You’d started out shy, unsure of why the hell he seemed so struck with talking to you when he appeared so disdainful of everyone else in Stars Hollow.
And then you’d warmed to him, you’d opened up, you’d spent evenings as the only two people in Luke’s — just talking for hours on end — only to the next day seem distant again.
He’d tried to reassure himself that you did like him too, and that you were just shy, but something always stopped him from passing the boundaries of friendship beyond flirtatious remarks.
“Am I being relegated to an acquaintance?” he placed a hand over his heart and screwed up his face like he was going to cry, before relaxing it and smirking once more, “Or is your inquisitive tone your way of hinting at your undying love for me?”
“Shut up,” you shoved his arm gently, watching him feign a gasp, “You’re a pain in the ass, you know that right?”
Jess scooted his chair even closer to the table, “I totally thought that was your favourite quality of mine. My mistake!”
You didn’t reply for a moment, challenging him with eye contact and feeling your chest tighten at the way he seemed to match the intensity.
“What’re you doing tonight?”
This was new — he normally just hinted at caring what you were up to, nudged for you to give away whether you were seeing anyone, and danced around flirting just enough that he could deny it if you called him out on it.
You gestured to the book he’d made himself comfortable on, “A riveting night of draining your establishment of coffee ‘til you close, finishing this book and then probably either starting another or binging some shitty tv.”
It was only now that he looked at the book he was leaning on, clocking that it was Ham on Rye and he was the one who’d lent it to you when you’d expressed a desire to read more Bukowski.
“How’re you finding it?”
“Oh, and apparently starting the Jess and Y/N book club,” you teased, “Yeah, I’m enjoying. Thank you again for letting me borrow it.”
He smiled, “Anytime. Want me to leave you alone ‘til you’re done with it?”
You pondered his question for a moment. You didn’t want him to go anywhere, but weren’t quite sure if you should suppress your eagerness for his company.
“No, no,” you bit your lip, “Its alright. Does—,” you almost asked if Luke needed him, in the hopes that he’d say no and you could ask him if he wanted to get out of there. Almost.
“Does… what?”
“Nothing, never mind,” you shook your head, blushing crimson at how closely he watched your every move, “Its quiet in here tonight.”
He shrugged, “I was hoping you’d ask if I wanted to get out of here, because Luke definitely doesn’t need me when it’s this dead.”
You smirked, “Is this you asking me to get out of here?”
“Maybe.”
“Cool.”
“Cool?”
“Yes, Jess, cool. Let’s go somewhere else,” you grinned, pulling your book from beneath his elbow slowly and watching him roll his eyes at your teasing smile as you did so, “I was going to ask that. Didn’t want to seem too eager and boost your ego.”
He feigned insult again, “Ego? What ego?!”
He rose to his feet as you packed your book into your bag, gesturing that he was going to go and tell Luke he was leaving and quickly sauntering over to the counter, where you just about overheard Luke mumble, “Finally asked then?”
That made your stomach swarm with butterflies — this was really happening.
All this time, and things were finally progressing.
Jess briefly disappeared behind the counter, before re-emerging with his jacket and opening the door to the diner for you to lead the way out.
“Where’d ya wanna go?” you asked, your voice quiet as you suddenly felt anxious about being so close to him.
Your feelings for Jess had been growing steadily for so long now, bubbling under the surface, and now you finally had an inkling he actually liked you too you didn’t know what to do with yourself.
He shrugged again, looking down at his feet with his hands stuffed in his pockets as he ambled through Stars Hollow at your side.
“We can just walk,” you hummed, “Or we can go to mine. I’ve, uh, got a treehouse out back that my dad built when I was a kid. Or not if that’s a really fucking lame suggestion.”
He kicked a stone at his feet, “No, that sounds good. Totally lame. But good.”
That pleased you enough to elicit a small hum from your lips, and you found yourself walking a little closer to him as you led the way to your house, “Good. Follow me then.”
When you arrived at your house it was empty as ever — the reason you spent so much time at Luke’s was the rarity of company at your own home given your parents’ busy work lives.
You grabbed a few drinks from the fridge, some snacks from the cupboard, and then led the way out back to the treehouse, which was lit with fairy lights and adorned inside with band posters and shelves of books.
“I’ll give it to you, Y/N, it’s less lame than expected,” Jess nudged your side as you crawled in and slumped down on the mattress in the corner of the room, scoffing at him, “I feel honoured to have the Jess Mariano’s approval.”
“Should I feel privileged to be up here?” he licked his lips, eyes glancing over at the torn “NO BOYS ALLOWED” sign discarded at the edge of the tree house too, “Or does the sad state of the sign suggest I’m one of many exceptions?”
You rolled your eyes, “If you’re jealous that other boys may have been up here, you can just say that, Jess. But you should feel privileged because you’re the first. In fact, I can’t believe I didn’t even think twice about bringing you up here.”
He seemed to like that, his eyes glimmering as they darted between your lips and your eyes repeatedly while he found the words to respond.
“I’d say that means you like me, Y/N,” his voice was barely above a whisper as he spoke, and your close proximity left you shuddering as his breath fanned over your face, “Can’t say I blame you.”
His shit-eating grin made you roll your eyes for the millionth time tonight, “Here I was about to say maybe you were right. Thanks for snapping me out of it, shithead. I don’t like you nearly as much as you like yourself, huh.”
He just stared at you for a moment, eyes still twinkling and his breathing jagged.
“Funny, except I don’t think that’s true,” his head dipped to kiss you now, capturing your lips at first tentatively and then with increasing pressure as you kissed back.
He pulled back for a second, half smirking and half dazed, “Yep, I’d say you definitely like me.”
“Says the one who initiated the kiss,” you challenged, “And has been flirting with me incessantly since, like, the moment we met.”
He raised his eyebrow, “Oh is that so?”
“Are you denying it?”
“Oh no, I’ve definitely been flirting,” he licked his lips once more, desperate to kiss you again but trying to refrain for now, “It’s just funny that you’re only calling me out on it now.”
You gently shoved him and poked out your tongue, “I can kick you out of my treehouse whenever I want, you know.”
He only leaned closer again, “But you’re not gonna, are you?”
Jesus Christ you’d not been prepared for the palpitations in your chest right now. Your heart thrummed against your rib cage, drunk on the feelings that had only gotten stronger tonight.
“It’s your lucky day.”
You kissed him again, and the arm he wasn’t propped up on scooped around your waist to pull you closer and deepen the kiss, “Yeah, I guess it is.”
You stayed like this for god knows how long, joking around in between kisses and getting more and more comfortable in each other’s company, until he sat up abruptly and furrowed his brows.
“What’s wrong? Filled your kiss quota for the night and ready to leave or something?” you smiled, tongue in cheek, and he chuckled.
“Oh no, never. Just figured as much as I’d like to just kiss you, we should probably talk,” it was unlike Jess to look as nervous as he did right now.
In the time that had passed this evening, you’d grown comfortable enough to help him out a little here.
“I really like you, Jess.”
He wasn’t expecting that — you could tell from his wide eyes and open mouth, which he swiftly shut when he realised he was slack-jawed and silent.
He reached out to take your hand in his, fingers twiddling with yours, “You do? That’s, uh, good. ‘Cause I really like you too, Y/N.”
You couldn’t help the little joyous giggle that escaped your lips, and he couldn’t help the warmth that spread through him at the sound of it, “D’you want to stay over tonight? We can sleep in here?”
He kissed your nose, relaxing back into his reclined position again, “If you’re sure… I’d like that.”
“‘Mm, c’mon then,“ you cuddled in a little closer to him, suddenly overcome with tiredness from the evenings events, “…’m sleepy.”
He smiled, a broader smile than he was sure he’d ever smiled before, happy you were finally this close to him. He dipped his head to kiss your forehead, interlocking your hands as you got comfortable on his chest.
“G’night beautiful,” he whispered, and you could hear his heart thrumming in his chest. You couldn’t believe you’d found this side of Jess Mariano. And you weren’t going to get over that joy any time soon.
“Night Jess,” you hummed, already half asleep, “You better be here when I wake up.”
“Oh I will, Y/N, I’m not going anywhere.”

Pop of Colour

Flufftober, October 9th
Female reader x Jess Mariano
Summary: Jess asks you paint his nails
Warnings: none
A/n: this is the first Gilmore Girls fic I've written, I hope it's good! Oh, and this is ooc but Jess is my sweet baby, so hush and read! ...only if you want to <3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jess is sitting on your bed, leaning against your headboard with one of your pillows in his lap. He watches as you screw the top back on your nail polish. He watched you paint your nails the whole time.
He's always been interested in painted nails and always wished he could have his colorful as well. But he knows people will point it out and they'll make fun of him, as his mom had always told him, even when she was drunk or high as a kite. All her boyfriends and husbands had made it very clear that boys should never have painted nails or wear any makeup when Jess once came back home from school after coloring his nails with markers at school.
"You okay, Jess?" You ask him, noticing his eyes trained on your hands. "Um, yeah, sorry" he looks up at your face.
After a pause he opened his mouth again, "I-I was wonderin if you could, uh, paint...my nails? please?" He knows that he's not good at asking for things or asking about stuff, but he's been trying since you guys started dating.
"Oh, yeah, of course, hun. Come over here" You softly smile and nod over to the other chair with a sweater draped over the back of it.
He blinks for a second, surprised that you said yes, and puts your pillow back. He climbs off the bed and sits down on the chair. You pull out your small basket with nail polish and sit on your chair, holding it out to him.
"You can choose whatever colour you want," You tell him and he takes the basket from you.
He gently rummages through the different colours and pulls a dark red one out. He hesitantly hands it to you and places the basket on your desk.
You take it from Jess and shake it for a couple seconds. "Good choice" You twist the top open. "Okay, place your left hand on the desk and keep it still," You tell him. He nods, obliging to the order. He places his left hand on the wood surface.
As you paint his nails, his eyes are focused on the strokes of the small brush. Every time you dip the brush back into the polish and start on the next nail, he feels the coolness of the strong smelling dyed chemical.
"Aaand...done" you twist the top back onto the bottle and put it with the rest of them.
Jess looks down at both of his hands. A smile perks up on his face when he sees the shiny polish on his nails.
"You like?" You ask, seeing the smile on his face. "I love 'em...thank you" He answers, still working on not being closed off with his thoughts and emotions.
"Of course, any time. Now, just for the next five minutes, keep your hands still, especially the one I just painted, to make sure nothing smudges" You put the basket away before leaning against the desk.
"But what if I wanted to kiss you?" Jess smirks, trying to put his 'bad boy' image back up. "Hmm, cute" You smirk back, knowing exactly what he's trying to do.
"You'll have to wait, for now, this'll have to suffice" You lean down and kiss his forehead.
"Oh, come on, not even a real kiss" He pouts, something that's new for him, but he makes sure to only do it in front of you. He almost slipped up in front of Luke after he had a nightmare one night, and it was a complete disaster in his mind.
"Nope, you, baby, are gonna have to wait" You playfully wink, making him groan. The only good thing out of your teasing is now he knows what it's like to have painted nails like he's always wanted without someone making fun of him (at least right now at least), And if Luke brings up how his nail colour changed, no he doesn't.
if you'd like to join any of my taglists, please lmk :D
you, rory, and lorelai stumbled into luke’s very loudly. few heads turned despite this being the norm every morning. the ruckus you all caused wasn't ignored, just accepted. “ow, mom, you stepped on my foot!” rory whined. “ooh sorry” lorelai winced.
“go order, n/n.” lorelai shoved. you stuck out your tongue as the girls sat down. you saw jess was behind the register this morning instead of luke. he was reading (obviously) and looked up once he heard you guys enter.
“ooh, ror, look at that boy at the register. doesn’t he look divine?” you swooned in a light british accent. rory nodded, chuckling. “go talk to him penelope, darling. perhaps he’s interested in you.” lorelai mimicked your accent and threw a napkin at you.
you giggled and strutted to the register where jess was smirking slightly while still reading his book. you turned your head to the side and raised a brow, waiting for him to acknowledge you. he looked up and closed his book.
“what can i get for you?” he asked, grabbing his notepad. you leaned against the counter. “i’ll need a menu sweetheart, i’m new at this joint.” you responded, pretending to look at your nails boredly. he chuckled briefly and rolled his eyes before handing you a menu.
after looking for a split second, you began to order. “i’ll have the cheese fries, but hold the cheese please.” you smiled sweetly. “so just fries.” jess said, more a statement rather than a question. “i suppose so.” you rolled your eyes dramatically. jess grinned at your antics. “anything else?”
“oh no darling, i’m on a diet. i’ve got to stay pretty for the gentlemen. you never know when the one will show up.” you winked. he leaned closer to you. “i’m sure ‘the one’ wouldn’t mind what was on your palette.” he kissed your cheek and handed the notepad to caesar.
he turned back to you. “how’s your day been penelope?” he genuinely questioned. “not bad so far. of all the men i’ve seen before, and believe me i’ve seen a lot, i think you are the prettiest.” you complimented. watching jess get all flustered and start squirming was something you loved to watch.
“come over when school’s over?” he asked, holding your hand and playing with your fingers. you shrugged. “i suppose i could clear my schedule.” he nodded, giving you a kiss to which you happily returned.
“now i sashay away.” you giggled, sashaying to your family as jess watched with hearts in his eyes. lorelai covered her mouth, pretending to be curious.
“does he like you?”
“hmph, i think so. i believe he’s just a little shy.”
I just had a random thought that I think is so cute 🥰 could you do Jess messing with the reader by pulling on her belt loops as a way of flirting. Like he’d do it when she’s not expecting it and she tries to not show how much she likes it but Jess already knows 🤭
pairings! jess mariano x fem reader
warnings! so. much. fluff. jess being a dork.
word count! literally so short. not even 500😭
JESS MARIANO had always been a bit of a flirt with girls that were worth his while. There was a never ending obsession with making these girls flustered. He was practically addicted to the attention of girls nearly waving their underwear  at him — whether he liked it or not. Yet with his girlfriend, he had a special move that never failed to make her heart race. Whenever they were together, he would sneak up behind her and pull on the belt loops of her jeans, giving her a playful tug.
At first, his girlfriend would try to ignore it, pretending that it didn't bother her. But secretly, she loved the way he flirted with her. She loved the way his hands felt on her hips and the way his touch sent shivers down her spine. Jess had a severe lack of interest in any PDA before he met her… but his hands were always fumbling with her belt loops.
One day, they were walking through Stars Hollow, and Jess snuck up behind her, giving her belt loops a gentle tug. She turned around, a smile spreading across her face, and he grinned back at her.
"I know you like it," he said, giving her another tug as if it was nothing. She laughed, leaning into him. "Maybe I do," she admitted. "But you're lucky I love you, or I might have to punch you for that."
Jess chuckled, pulling her closer to him. "I think you secretly love it," he teased, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
His girlfriend rolled her eyes, but she couldn't hide the smile on her face. "You're such a dork," she said, wrapping her arms around him.
Jess grinned, pulling her in for a kiss. As they walked through town, hand in hand, he couldn't help but feel grateful for this girl who loved him, quirks and all.
And as for the belt loop trick, well, he knew he'd never stop using it. It was just one of the many little ways he showed his love for her.
cw: angsty, unexpected pregnancy, but otherwise fluff??
↳ masterlist  ↳ ship exchange ↳ taglist
Tumblr media
When you got pregnant, it was…unexpected—not planned whatsoever. You were only sixteen, not ready to raise a kid, of all things. But you couldn’t find it in yourself to give it up. And when your daughter was born, it made all the pain worth it. She was ethereal.
She was three years old now, full of personality, a lover of all things squishy. She preferred to hide behind you in the grocery store than talk to people, but she smiled at every book she saw and pet every dog you passed. Even with all of that, she didn’t have her Dad.
It wasn’t surprising that Jess got freaked out and ran when she was firstborn. You guys were just friends who hooked up, and suddenly you were pregnant. With the way his life went, it didn’t surprise you. But it hurt; it made you so angry you wanted to scream. You endured, though; you had to.
That’s why it was unexpected when an unknown number called you in the middle of the day.
“Hello?” You answered, shoving the phone between your shoulder and head as you finished cutting some carrot sticks for a snack. There was breathing at the other end of the line, and for a second, you worried something nefarious was at play. “I will call the cops—“
“Don’t,” the voice said, the familiar baritone New York accent you had spent years learning. The intonations, the snark—you knew it like the back of your hand.
“Jess?” You guessed, setting down the kitchen knife and holding the phone tightly.
“I, uh….fuck,” you heard him swear on the other line. You didn’t say anything; just let him work out whatever he wanted as you tried your best to control your breath. “Hi.”
“Hi.”
“How are you?”
“Really,” you deadpanned. “Three years, and that’s all you got?”
“I don’t know what to say to you,” Jess sighed. “I thought I did, but, fuck, hearing your voice…” He didn’t elaborate, but he didn’t have to. You knew all too well. You were experiencing that same feeling right now. “I’m sorry.”
“I…appreciate that,” you coughed.
“I want to see you and…”
“Her, Maria,” you responded. It occurred to you that Jess never learned your kid's name. He wasn’t around long enough for that.
“Maria,” he said, feeling the name around his tongue. I want to try.”
You laughed at that, some of that bubbling anger surfacing in a way you hadn’t felt.
“Why now?” You inquired, your fingers tapping on your cutting board.
“I’m ready now,” Jess said, and you could hear that familiar snark you used to love so much.
“I wasn’t ready; I just had to deal with it,” you seethed, and it took a deep breath to help you not start yelling. “I didn’t get that choice.”
“I know, god, I’m…sorry.”
You don’t remember the last time Jess ever really apologized for anything.
“You can’t choose to show back up because it’s convenient.”
“Y/N…” his sigh was evident on the other line. “Please, let me be better.”
You were silent for a few moments, contemplating everything—whether it was worth it, whether you wanted to try. You rubbed your eyes as if it would clear your head.
“Lunch,” you sighed. “You get a lunch with us. And only if Maria wants to. It’s her choice whether she wants you in her life or not. Alright?”
“Alright,” the relief was evident in his voice, and you tampered down any softness that might undermine your frustration.
“Alright.”
Lunch happened at Lou’s, a deli you frequented with your daughter. It was public, safe, but neutral territory that helped you see Jess again after so many years. You almost didn’t recognize him when he came in, even though he looked exactly the same. He just seemed…older. You guess you were, too.
Maria was quiet during lunch, picking at her sandwich and sending shy glances towards her father. You didn’t realize that they had the same eyes, the same suspicious furrow of their brow that showed how intelligent they were. You convinced yourself she had none of him at all.
One lunch became two, then three. Then it was routine to get lunch. At some point, it became dinners. Eventually, you let Jess take Maria out, just the two of them. She’d come home with a smile and some book he bought her. He introduced her to the Ramones (you thought she was a little young, but it wasn’t terrible, so you let it pass). She sometimes would mumble the words “Judy is a Punk” to herself while she read.
Jess became such a staple of your life that you allowed yourself to open up to him again. He was writing, getting his GED, and working on opening a publishing press with some friends. He was excited to hear you were still in college and hadn’t given up. He said the saddest thing that could’ve become of you was never realizing your potential. You had to hide your flush when he said it.
One night, when Maria was asleep, and the two of you were picking up toys in the living room, he asked you to move in with him.
“Can you even support that many people?” You scoffed, piling her books on one of the side counters.
“Yes.”
“Why?” you inquired, standing with your hands on your hips. Why was the question that haunted you throughout this entire experience. Why did he call? Why does he care? Why did he leave? Your life was dominated by the second-to-last letter of the alphabet—why?
“You guys are my family,” Jess breathed, fingers twiddling from nerves. You raised a brow, wanting more of an answer. “I had a revelation, after spending time with my Uncle…that I was terrible. I want to be better.”
You took a breath before answering. “Where do you live?”
“Stars Hollow.”
“Where’s that?”
“Connecticut.”
Your eyes bulged from your head, and if you had a drink, you would’ve spit it out.
“Jess!” You exclaimed. “That’s three hours away!”
“I’m aware since I’m the one who travels it,” Jess said, his hands in his pockets, indicating obvious discomfort. You were wrapping your brain around the fact that Jess traveled three hours every week just to get lunch with you—with your daughter—and he had never brought it up. Something shifted in your mind about that. “Look…”
“Jess–”
“I want to try again.”
“Another baby?” you exclaimed, and Jess put a hand up to his face and groaned.
“No, Jesus Christ,” he swore. He cut you off before you could say anything else. “I was a complete idiot for leaving you, for leaving Maria. I don’t deserve half the kindness you’ve given me, but, fuck, I want to try this…family thing. I want to try with you.” Jess shoved his hands in his pockets, reminding you so much of his teenage self that it was almost painful. “I want to try with us.”
It took you a second to decipher what he was saying, and you felt your eyes widen. You were never actually in a relationship with Jess, just two friends who had drank too much one night. But you always cared. You loved everything in his nature up until he left. With him back, you remembered why you felt so much in the first place.
“Okay,” you stammer, watching Jess’ eyes widen with disbelief. “Let’s try. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen?”
“We hate each other?”
“I’m looking forward to it,” you chuckle, and that coaxes a similar laugh out of Jess. You both end up dissolving into laughter, something raw and so unlike the layer of the past that has haunted you guys for the past months. It felt like a dam opening up, everything crashing down but resolving into something tangible.
A few weeks later, you move to Stars Hollow, your meager items in matching luggage. The college agreed to let you finish your degree online, and you find work at the Dragonfly Inn. The town is much more colorful and friendly than the New York you are used to. Still, you find yourself loving it—just as you find yourself loving Jess, how he responds to your daughter, and the apparent way he’s grown up.
Yes, it was unexpected. But not unwanted.
