The Devil's Plan, Review (Netflix, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was curious of this show upon reading tweets about it. I'm only familiar with Ha Seok-jin as I've watched him in kdramas (and a few variety shows where he guested in).
I actually didn't expect that the games would be so well-crafted, and how it shows some of the human survival insticts in such shows. I do wish that some of the earlier main matches were individual games before it proceeds to somehow an alliance/team game by the end. I was kind of bummed that potential ace players were eliminated due to some bad lucks 🤧 and individual matches can really show each of the players possible strengths.
Overall, I enjoyed the shows as there are really mindblowing twists in it. It was kind of reminiscent of Liar Game (which I enjoyed before!!). Really looking forward if there would be news of a second season. Hoping for a much more intense strategies, alliances, and a lil bit of drama.
[SPOILER]
Congrats to Ha Seokjin!!! It was honestly well deserved after seeing how he played the game, fairly and logically. (And i dont know if it's because I was slightly bias for knowing him prior to the show, but I really did root for him hahaha)
Salute also to ORBIT, for also giving his best to all games, especially for stepping forward. His strategy may not have worked well but yea. His poker play was truly great!
To other casts also! I was on team Seokjin-Seewon-Dongjae-Guillaume who somehow ended up like an underdog team in the show.

Four Continents 2023: Men’s FS
okay i made it !!
work’s been a complete bitch this week but glad I finally got to tune in for this :^)
came in the middle of group 2 -
Sihyeong Lee (KOR)
so many rippon arms...like damn
such a good fight!! i really do like this program on him
korean skating is onward and upward man...i’m so excited for this whole team
Liam Kapeikis (USA)
ah yes moulin rouge the warhorse...it has so much of a reputation that there’s so much pressure to deliver a good program for it...
had some bobbles and bad jumps...and then started getting it back together
also kinda suffers from windmill arms...
so many falls T-T my guy, your time will come
Mikhail Shaidorov (KAZ)
literally have never watched mikhail ever, so interested to see how this goes
good technical foundation as far as i can see, nice flow on his jumps
def was struggling stamina wise at the step sequence towards the end...colorado really is unforgiving with the altitude difference
Stephen Gogolev (CAN)
i feel like i saw his spartacus program at the very beginning of the season, so curious to see how it’s evolved
not the 2S... and the other 2S... :’)
ignoring the double sals...a solid showing!! it just sucks that he literally gets no points for those :|
Koshiro Shimada (JPN)
not my fave program of his (imo nobody does chaplin like javi), but oh well
he’s really zipping around the ice today - his lines are always sooo nice
the 2a jump sequence... man that was a lofty one and he still had enough momentum to do an euler and a triple sal after???
def still waiting on him to grow his performance/presence more in the next few seasons...this wasn’t technically his best or worst performance, but adding just a bit more Energy to it makes such a difference
Jaeseok Kyeong (KOR)
first time watching him - his outfit is giving me cute stylish bookworm vibes
wish he’d extend his lines all the way through his hands - they’re really pretty and then it stops at his wrist
good recovery after the fall on the opening 3A. he’s also pretty speedy
the music shift is fun !!
i’m obsessed, this whole program was so fun, and you felt the energy in the first 20s even though he completely bombed the first jump
Maxim Naumov (USA)
i’ve also never watched maxim ever so this will be new for me
the music is called “iron, shadows, loyal” is this a fantasy soundtrack cut or have i been living under a rock
rough start with several hard falls :(
what is with the men and 2_1Eu3_ sequences tonight
i like this music cut though...(feels like he’s trying to follow in jimmy’s stylistic footsteps) but tonight’s performance was stressful
what can i say, i love men who can perform and have terrible jump consistency
Conrad Orzel (CAN)
it’s been eons since i last watched conrad...
ohhh “paint it black” ??? just wish he had a more interesting all black outfit
solid perf technically, hoping he is able to give it more oomph by the time worlds rolls around (assuming he is sent to worlds)
Shun Sato (JPN)
(oh my god i swear i typed shun’s thing and then it didn’t save smh)
his jumps are so soft and precise !! so smooth
can’t wait for him to grow a bit more in the next few seasons and become a total Show Stopper
Junhwan Cha (KOR)
junhwan pls medal PLS
that opening jump on the james bond theme...man oh man
noooo he tapped the boards when he fell
the fuckin popped 2A...chaotic
this is such a great james bond music cut, but alas this was not his best showing
Boyang Jin (CHN)
i honestly feel like i haven’t seen boyang since olys...which were a full year ago...
it’s so weird to me that nathan and shoma aren’t at this comp with him...there was an era where the three of them were everywhere
this is soft and unsnoozy music, aka perfect
not his best skate, but so good to see him out here !! can’t wait to see this program when he’s in better shape and not competing a mile high
Jimmy Ma (USA)
jimmy getting 3rd in the SP was not something i was expecting...but let’s gooo
clair de lune is a very Normal choice...and then it cuts to the EDM music we expect from him (always can rely on jimmy to bring us to the club)
there were some chaos pops (1A...lol) but he seems happy with it overall !!
3rd in the sp to 11th in the fs to 7th overall...yup the chaos of the men’s event
Keegan Messing (CAN)
the world’s favorite, father of two - i’m emo over him giving jimmy a hug as they pass each other on the ice
i’ve seen this program so much this year, and it’s a packaging that would be cheesy for anyone else, but it works SO well for him
two clean 4Ts and 3As?? he’s on FIRE
that’s it, 4CC is over, give him the gold (i’m sorry kao, it literally doesn’t matter how well you do. keegan deserves first in my heart)
Kao Miura (JPN)
kao literally wasn’t on my radar until i saw him this season during the grand prix series...and MAN oh MAN when he’s on, he’s ON
when he ups his performance energy, it will be the end of me
his jumps rotate so evenly (idt that makes sense, but it makes sense to me)
really milking the chorus of this song...hell yeah !!
wow. what an event !!

Here are my thoughts on each contestant so far (spoilers up to ep. 9). These are just my impressions of their roles in the limited context of the show, not as actual people.
- Lee Si-Won: The mad scientist! My favorite, though not necessarily my favorite to win. Sharp, strong-willed but loyal, and most of all, persistent. She and Seok-jin have incredible synergy. If the competition comes down to the two of them, though, I feel like she wouldn't have the heart to beat him...
- Ha Seok-jin: ...while he would have no such qualms. Crafty, independent, and observant, a real genius when it comes to scheming to an almost scary extent. He's definitely most at home in a "villain" role where he doesn't have to protect anyone. He and Si-Won give me the vibes of a natural talent and a hard worker teaming up instead of fighting over their differences.
- Seungkwan: Actually pretty interesting. Whether he intended to or not, he's the only one who has managed to strike a balance between being a threatening contestant and an exploitable one. He leans more towards the latter, but not to the extent that people are targeting him. In fact, everyone likes him a lot. That's an idol for you.
- Guillaume: Just smart in general. It was especially sly of him to play dumb throughout the first game. Seemed like an all-rounder. It wasn't his or really anyone's fault he got eliminated. His team just had to decide on a strategy early on that they weren't able to change later.
- Kim Dong-Jae: Very similar to Seok-jin. Schemers, the two of them. The main difference is that while Seok-jin is fine with keeping a tight circle or even flying solo, Dong-jae wanted to build trust with others. His fatal mistake during Secret Number was not committing to either closing ranks or cutting off contact with Seok-jin and Si-Woo. I'm very interested in what the writing test for this show was like, for him to be one of the two to get a perfect score.
- Lee Hye-sung: She didn't get to do much. I like that she trusted Dong-jae, but she was too trusting. I think she should've stood her ground and compared numbers with Yu-min first, then leveraged that information to ensure Dong-jae's loyalty. That might have helped Yu-min feel secure enough to not betray them later.
- Seo Yu-min: Way too dependent on others, though she seems to have taken the results of Secret Number to heart. She has the right idea about taking advantage of other people's sympathy for her, but the helpless act only works in the long term if it's just an act and not, you know, real. Also, Seungkwan has already filled the niche she wants. She should make more use of her greatest asset: Joon-bin, who clearly still feels guilty about Secret Number.
- Park Kyeong-rim: She's so sweet. If I had to choose, she's the one I'd want to meet in real life the most. But in the show, she's way too much of an open book and bleeding heart. I like that she's more cautious of Yu-min after Laying Grass, though that just means she'll divert more of her attention to helping Seungkwan.
- Kwak Joon-bin: He's funny because he talks a big game about wanting to turn traitor and cause chaos, but he's a huge softie who refuses to exploit weaker contestants. I don't think he's crafty enough to take down stronger opponents either. He's proven himself as an active participant in the games, which is really all it takes to not be marked as exploitable even if your most of his ideas go unused. But people don't trust him because of his big ol' mouth.
- Seo Dong-joo: Also smart in general, bold. The Si-won to Orbit's Seok-jin, kind of. She's more of Orbit's second-in-command than his partner, though that's only because Orbit is that much of a force of nature while she's content to play a supporting role. She's pretty loyal to Orbit, but she doesn't care that much about the others and only helps them because he does. Even then, she's been having doubts about him since Zoo. I think she could go head to head with Orbit if it comes down to the two of them.
- Orbit: Love him or hate him (looking at you, Si-won), he's incredibly influential. He's so much of a leader that it's kind of stifling. Extremely smart in a technical way, the best at coming up with group strategies based on actual game theory. This complements his "protect the weak" ideology, though that has been breaking down. He can't save everyone, even at the expense of the other team. I think he first realized that after Zoo and then truly accepted it during Laying Grass.
- Cho Yeon-woo: She was too passive, exploitable. But while Seungkwan is loveable and Yu-min is pitiable, she never found an approach that would make someone hesitate about targeting her. I wish she got the chance to show her strengths, but Seok-jin's robbery was frankly a brilliant move so I'm not that mad. I think she should've cozied up to Si-won more, especially by telling her about the safe. Seok-jin would've disapproved but Si-won would've stood up for her.

Exploring the Chilling World of Sweet Home
Korean dramas have taken the world by storm with their innovative storytelling, and Sweet Home is a standout example of this trend. Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, this series delves into a gripping blend of horror, thriller, and human drama, creating a truly unique viewing experience.
Tumblr media
youtube
Sweet Home is set in a dystopian world where humanity is on the brink of extinction due to a mysterious phenomenon that turns people into monstrous creatures based on their innermost desires. The story follows Cha Hyun-soo (played by Song Kang), a reclusive teenager who moves into a run-down apartment complex after a family tragedy. As the world outside collapses, the residents of the apartment complex must band together to survive the nightmarish creatures and uncover the truth behind the apocalypse.
Tumblr media
Characters
Cha Hyun-soo (Song Kang): The protagonist, a reclusive teenager who struggles with his inner demons and guilt over his family's death. His journey is central to the series, as he grapples with his transformation into a monster and his desire to protect others.
Pyeon Sang-wook (Lee Jin-wook): A mysterious man with a violent past who becomes a crucial ally to Hyun-soo. His tough exterior hides a deep sense of justice and a desire to atone for his past sins.
Seo Yi-kyeong (Lee Si-young): A former firefighter with exceptional combat skills. She emerges as a leader among the survivors, using her skills to protect the group and maintain order.
Lee Eun-hyuk (Lee Do-hyun): A medical student with a cold and calculating demeanor. He takes on the role of the group's strategist, making difficult decisions for the greater good.
Tumblr media
Themes
Sweet Home explores several profound themes:
Survival and Humanity: The series delves into what it means to be human in the face of monstrous transformations. It questions whether the monsters are the true villains or if the real danger lies within the hearts of the survivors.
Isolation and Connection: Hyun-soo's journey from isolation to finding a sense of community among the survivors highlights the importance of human connection, even in the darkest times.
Redemption and Sacrifice: Many characters seek redemption for past mistakes, often making significant sacrifices to protect others. These themes add emotional depth to the horror and action elements.
Season Highlights
Season 1: The inaugural season of Sweet Home introduces viewers to a compelling mix of horror and psychological drama. The diverse cast of characters, each with their own struggles and secrets, adds depth to the storyline. The series excels in creating tension and fear, often through claustrophobic settings and startling monster designs. The balance between character development and intense action scenes keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
youtube
Season 2: Building on the foundation of the first season, Season 2 expands the world of Sweet Home with more intricate plots and deeper character arcs. The stakes are higher, and the monsters are more terrifying. The season explores themes of hope, redemption, and the human will to survive, adding emotional weight to the horror elements. The character dynamics evolve, and new alliances and conflicts arise, making for a thrilling continuation of the story.
youtube
Season 3: Anticipation for Season 3 is high, with fans eager to see how the story unfolds. Early teasers suggest an even darker and more intense season, with new monstrous threats and deeper explorations into the characters' backstories. The survivors will face moral dilemmas and unexpected alliances as they continue their fight for survival. The themes of humanity and monstrosity will be further explored, pushing characters to their limits and challenging their perceptions of good and evil.
Official Soundtrack
The soundtrack of Sweet Home enhances the eerie atmosphere of the series with a mix of haunting and dramatic scores. Key tracks include:
"Sweet Home" by Yoon Mi-rae: The title track perfectly captures the essence of the series, blending a haunting melody with powerful lyrics that reflect the show's themes.
"Lullaby" by Dean: This track adds a layer of melancholy to the series, emphasizing the emotional struggles of the characters.
"Chaos" by Epik High: A high-energy song that underscores the intense action scenes and the chaotic world the characters inhabit.
Tumblr media
Sweet Home stands out as a prime example of how Korean dramas can successfully blend different genres to create something truly captivating. With its intriguing storyline, well-developed characters, and impressive production values, it’s a must-watch for fans of horror and thriller genres. The series not only delivers scares but also explores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable horror.
Whether you're drawn to its chilling atmosphere or its deep character studies, Sweet Home offers a fresh take on the apocalyptic genre, making it a standout addition to the world of Korean dramas. With the promise of an even more intense Season 3, now is the perfect time to dive into this thrilling series.
Honest Comment: If I'm gonna say something is about the visuals and acting of Song Kang when I saw the characters and aura of the series I never doubt to watch it and it is a great series having some thrill vibes is a must for me. I recommend this series you'll love it!!

2023 (59th) BaekSang Arts Awards - April 28, 2023
Best Actor (Lee Sung-Min)
