Closing his eyes did nothing to block out the grunts and strangled cries coming from across the hall, but Jae Chan did it anyway. He curled more tightly around Hong Joo and concentrated on staving off tears.

He had finally gotten her to sleep a little. She twitched fitfully in nightmares, and made little pain sounds when her movements aggravated her own wounds. But she needed the rest, meager though it was. The least he could do was not fuck it up by sobbing and waking her.

Their captors hadn't touched him.

He wasn't religious, particularly, but he still prayed over and over to anyone who would listen that they would take him instead. He would rather tear his own heart out than keep watching his girlfriend and boyfriend go through this.

And it was his fault.

Woo Tak's vocalizations were becoming more frantic and pained. Jae Chan squeezed his eyes shut more firmly. The screams were going to start again soon. He knew Woo Tak was resisting for Hong Joo's and his sakes, and that he couldn't hold out forever.

"You're so useless," the guard outside their cell taunted. "You think if you can't see it, that makes it better? You know how to make it better. Just talk to us about the witnesses. You can protect these guys anytime you choose to."

Woo Tak started screaming.

Hong Joo jerked awake and burrowed deeper into his arms.

"I'm going to murder every single one of them," she mumbled into his chest. "You won't tell, right?”

He stroked her hair. "I won't tell." He didn't think she would actually go on a murder spree, however justified. But if it helped her to fantasize, he was not going to be a useless dork prosecutor about it. Not now.

"I dreamt about what they're going to do to me next. It's so unfair. I know there's gonna be more torture when I wake up. It would've been nice to-to–"

Woo Tak went silent.

They huddled together, suddenly stiff and alert and barely breathing.

They hadn't. They wouldn't. He was of no use to them if they–

But they had Hong Joo too. What if they’d lost patience and decided to apply more pressure?

Jae Chan strained to catch every creak of chain and click of lock. He heard someone start dragging something heavy and wet. A body.

The door into their room opened. He and Hong Joo flung themselves against the bars of their cell, clamoring “What did you do?” “Bastards, don’t you dare–” “Please, please leave them alone, you can’t–”

Woo Tak was bleeding from his temple, his nose, his stomach and hands. He hung listless between two thugs, jaw slack and eyes closed.

But he was breathing. Jae Chan grabbed Hong Joo’s hand and squeezed it. He was alive.

Jae Chan tried to shove Hong Joo behind him into the relative shelter of the corner.

“We talked about this,” she protested furiously, resisting. “You can't stop them. There’s no reason for you to get hurt too."

A taser buzzed, but it… didn’t hit Jae Chan? How–

Woo Tak made a terrible, high-pitched sound.

"We're not coming in there this time," explained their guard calmly. "Prosecutor Jung, sit down against the wall. Miss Nam, to the door if you please."

Hong Joo lunged forward to catch Jae Chan up in a swift, fierce kiss. “Stay strong,” she whispered. “He needs you. I’ll be okay.”

Jae Chan sat down and watched her go. He sat and watched them heave Woo Tak into the cell and lock the door. Then he hurried over to assess the damage.

Woo Tak twitched and flinched under his hands. Jae Chan made reassuring shushing sounds. The man’s eyes fluttered open a fraction, and his face split into a smile.

“‘Iss you,” he slurred. “They didn’t–you?”

“I’m fine. I’m–I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, this is–”

“No.” Woo Tak grabbed his wrist. “Protect them. Don’t tell.” His eyes drifted shut again. “Do the right thing,” he murmured.

Jae Chan wanted to rage and scream and–and ask for advice, because Woo Tak was good at doing the right thing and he wasn’t even sure anymore what that meant. But his boyfriend had slipped from consciousness.

Alone (except for the fucking guard, he was always there), Jae Chan allowed himself to cry.

Mini-review:

I loved Twinkling Watermelon so so much. This drama made my Mondays and Tuesdays for eight weeks. The story might not be groundbreaking, but it's incredibly well-written and fun. I was afraid the plot would be too simple to make it through 16 one-hour episodes, but it never dragged at all. There was always something to look forward to, and many of the twists caught me by surprise. On top of that, the writer gave us two fantastic love stories. Seriously, both of them are among the best I've seen in a K-drama. But the real focus of the show is the friendship between all the main characters, and its portrayal of youth was really heartwarming and nostalgic. And the whole cast was incredible too, they absolutely delivered at every turn. The only flaw I can point out is that the representation wasn't perfect, and they should've hired at least some deaf actors. Besides that, I don't have any complaints. I might go as far as saying this is one of my favorite dramas of all time, and I'm gonna miss it so much.

I had watched What Is Love on a movie YT channel, unsubbed and commented, in 5 parts to 1 hour. I had watched that while staying up the night and I really really enjoyed it.

The channel has now reuploaded it in one full video of almost 6 hours... sadly all the parts and all the comments under it are gone TT. But you can at least watch it now.

It's eye-opening and funny, touching and very emotionally involving all at the same time. Just too damn addictive. It is such a simple and realistic setting you get to believe every damn thing about the characters and just forget the actors are acting. Too damn real for it to be a drama, but there's the 90s for you

a/n : the ending was noooooot it ! so i made my own.

her brothers meant everything to her. even after being adopted by a chaebol and moving to another country, she provided for them, cared for them, and loved them. so who in their right mind would mess with her siblings, especially in-han?

chae was more than devastated when ha delivered the news of their brother being killed and the cover-up by the higher-ups. she was torn apart and would do anything to get revenge.

she started with jae-i. meeting her was accidental, but it felt like fate was on her side. chae discovered she was carrying a child and collected enough proof for future use. she befriended the girl after her miscarriage.

she didn't feel any pity at all. after all, this person was one of the reasons her brother died. an eye for an eye. a life for a life.

but that wasn't enough at all.

although it took chae a long time to fully gain jae-i's trust, it eventually happened. now, they're returning to korea.

"you sure you're ready to face him again?" chae asked with fake concern. "yeah, you know my plans already," jae-i responded, looking out the window.

'about time, now i can finally proceed to my other plans,' chae thought.

"what, you're falling for that girl now?! after everything in-han went through! you're falling for the girl who played a part in destroying our brother's life! ha, he didn't even get to live his life!" chae yelled miserably as tears overflowed her eyes, but outrage took over.

"if you're gonna ensure that girl, then stay the fuck out of my plans"

choi yun-seok. he was exceptionally simple to break. it took chae to just drug him with his own drugs and let a few young lady make out with the fellow. nothing past the line happened but chae sending the photo to his adored sweetheart causing them to break up.

baek chan-min. oh how she loved her adoptive parents connection. his parents were unemployed and his scholarship on the line in just a blink of an eye.

jung jae hyeok. a nauseating human being who seeks for his father's attention. chae drove his father away even more and spread his wrong doings.

lee woojin. a not so victim of pedophilia. it was exceptionally simple to gather prove of his taboo relationship with a teacher.

yoon hera. a cherished daughter. chae is the reason behind her father's bankcrupcy.

kim ri-an. his reaction was the finest after chae send a photo of his and jae-i's dead child. as well as haunting his life with his doings.

and now, the killer. han ji-su. she took time in ruining this person's life. starting with woojin to her career and to her life.

but that didn't end with just that. she released all the recordings, photographs, proofs, and scandals she had collected for a long time. ruining the family of each. destroying the student themselves. ruining the school itself. 

did she get caught? yes. but did they do anything? no, they cannot. all they could do is scream, cry, and be miserable just like her when she lost her brother.
