God, mood about the post-work braincells. Also, I mean this with so much love, but it means so much to me that I managed to scare the shit out of you with that lol. He gets. Just so much worse. Let's just say everyone in my discord servers I introduce him to universally hate him with a passion. Get ready.

ALSO technically parts of Declan and Lana's backstory are giant spoilers, including what will be one of the bigger plot twists, so I can't tell you just yet. HOWEVER, what I can do is reiterate and highlight things I've already said in-story, plus what's gonna be revealed soon when I actually upload her character profile lol. All that under the cut.

So the first time you really first start hearing about Lana is in Chapter 7, where we also meet Vaughn for the first time. In that, we learn that 1. Declan and Lana are ex boyfriend and girlfriend. As in they actually used to date. 2. Lana is Declan's boss now in some capacity (and was the one to order Stan's kidnapping), and 3, Declan fkn hates Lana. So much more than he hates Vaughn.

In Chapter 8, we learn that 4. Vaughn and Lana are currently dating. That's not really too relevant, but it's really funny to me because their relationship is... something. I'm sure you can imagine. It's very mutually manipulative and they both know it, its awesome.

Anyway, then in Ch. 9, through Stan and Deeby's yelling match, you learn that Declan and Lana's relationship is complicated and he refuses to talk about it, but 5. he's kinda obligated to do whatever Lana says or face unspecified consequences.

Skip to Chapters 11 and 12, the ones with Marcus at the convenience store getting harassed, where we first meet Lana in person. We learn a lot about her, mainly that she 6. acts pretty bubbly and ditzy but is actually pretty smart, 7. is completely fine with SA, 8. is manipulative as hell, 9. feels safe enough to fuck with Declan's plans because despite how much we know Deeby to exert his will over others, he wont do shit to stop her. and 10. The big one: she was the one to give Declan his burn scars (with acid btw. everyone in the story has a weapon of choice, bc superhero lol. Lana is injectable poisons, gasses, acids, etc.). This is mostly just something you could assume, but when she gave him that burn scar, that was the turning point when Lana started manipulating Deeby.

Chapter 15, it's mostly just more of the same, Lana telling Deeby to keep Stan for longer, and Deeby can't argue back, he hates Lana but he has to do what she says, whatever.

So, to put it all together for you: Lana has Deeby under her thumb for some reason. She acts fake, she's manipulative, she's relatively smart, and she dated Declan which means she would get to know some of the more intimate details about him that she could blackmail him with. Also something happened between them where she literally burned him with acid, and now she is his boss (she's the CEO of Supramed Corp. actually, which would be revealed whenever I get around to posting her character profile lol) and makes him do bounty hunting jobs as well as basically whatever she wants. That's what we know so far.

You'll learn more about Lana as a person as well as the nature of their relationship as time goes on, and a lot of Declan's behavior has been partially shaped because of her. There's a lot more to her that hasn't been uncovered yet, although the context clues are all there in the story. I just pointed out the specific ones that relate to Deccy.

Also, one last thing to leave you with. I focus a lot on eye color in this story, it's always very important, it tells you a lot. Lana has bright blue, sky blue type eyes. Can you maybe think of another time I've described a character with eyes like that?

but pretty much soukoku as an idol group til the photographer/aspireing writer oda somehow gets in a scandle and has his parental rights to his kids taken away. before was shared custody but now is.. not.

at this point dazai was already very ready to quit being an idol. so to try and cover up the oda scandal she leaks some pictures of her kissing some people earlier in her career and some mysterious ginger lady....... she also sets up a bomb under one of the agencys cars to really blow everything over.

chuuya is not happy with this. very not happy with this.

but, now she has the freedom to do whatever she wants with her music. so she gose full pop-punk rock<3<3<3<3 and also this is where stupid animatic make their way into my plan. remember the song black sheep cover by lady in schot pilgram, this is one song chuuya makes when she hits it off on her own. she also gets really popular when she moves to pop punk rock

okay dont actually have much else planned with this- just that 2-3 years later dazai publishes a book and its a crazy best seller. talking about the inner workings of the industry and is working on her next books. mabey publishes another in like a year. i am not fully sure timeline-

the dazai leaving the agensy and car bomb really give off breaking up vibes to chuuya til a hose soaked dazai is in front of her door. not even fake rain just blondie(kunikida) got mad at her plan and desided to try soaking the prick. i dont think they immediately start dating again, but they do at some point. and is secret dating ya.

dazai just shows up to some of chuuyas shows? its a running gag that dazai will somehow get on stage and fuck with chuuya. or mess with the lights. or just anything to make a lil ruckus. the media has no clue how dazai keeps ending up at them at the right place and right time.

so! one time 4-5-6 years after dazai leaves the company and a few years of them dating again, dazai sorta.. stops coming to the shows for a little? like seems to be super busy with new book or smth.

This entry refers to the first ever event banner this game had: Ollie.

During the duration of the event, if you pulled in the gacha and got a legendary Esper, there was a 10% chance that it would be Ollie. After making 350 pulls, this chance would get increased by another 10% every 50 pulls (400 would be 20%, 450 would be 30%, 500 would be 40% and so on)

This means that you would only be guaranteed an Ollie at your 850th pull. This has, understandably, made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Luckily, the system has been changed since then into something a bit more sensible.

Essentially, late 2023/early 2024, Lilith has been preparing to officially launch Dislyte in China. This was a pretty big deal, and so a lot of promoting and effort went into it.

This preparation period included a bunch of artists being commissioned to make art for the game to help promote it. A lot of being rather... risque

Essentially, August 2023, an announcement was made on the game's official Discord server, discussing the possibility of including alternate versions of espers as playable characters - the first one being Lian:

From what I remember, the general reception to the idea was mostly negative - most players viewed it as a cheap, lazy way to charge players for new characters without putting in the effort of actually developing them.

Due to this reaction, the idea has been dropped and not brought up since.

On the game's subreddit, user SoLongAndGoodnight_ has become lovingly known as "that one user desperately trying to get Li Ling". They documented their pulls on the subreddit, the journey becoming a sort of inside joke within the community.

People suggested just using wish stones to get him, but a consensus of 'it's the principle of the thing' quickly took root.

After nearly two years of getting unlucky, on the 25th of March, 2024, SoLongAndGoodnight_ had finally pulled a Li Ling from the gacha - marking the end of an era and one long-ass journey. The post announcing it is now one of the most upvoted posts in the subreddit.

it's just one of those "you had to be there" moments lol

1. Mo Ran is more in love with concept of Shi Mei than Shi Mei himself

It started to dawn on me a while back but it slowly became clearer and clearer. Like, before there could be multiple explanations of his lack of interest in Shi Mei. Because their interactions in the first book were so sweet and wholesome and njgvtfninvghbjuvif but like reading how they cleaned up the house in silence was fucking painful. It’s like he tried to convince himself he was and he is in love with Shi Mei. Maybe he never really was, maybe only after he died Mo Ran began to convince himself he always did. Maybe he saw it as more than it really was because of grief. And because he is stupid. 

2. Shi Mei is a snake isnt he

I said it in my emotional post before ab ch 74, he totally pretended to be sick. I CONSULTED ALL MY FRIENDS (what i mean by that is my bestie and my boyfriend because im a loser like Chu Wanning) AND ASKED THEM TO TELL ME IF HE WAS SUS OR NOT. The verdict wasn’t clear but as i kept reading, it became super obvious. It was soooo sus when he just casually got out of bed while he was supposedly sick, just to menacingly and mysteriously stare at Mo Ran out of the window. As if it wasn’t clear enough before when he acted like a dainty lady all of the sudden. jnfjnju i love him, but omg im scared of what that little snake would do and what is his goal. Is that Taxian-jun’s dick really that fine 

@rosemary-screams i don’t know… how much longer i can take it… how much longer i can be true to my principles… to my love… its so hard… the weight of evidence seems so overwhelming…

3. i didnt realize before that Mo Ran’s grave was under the haitang tree. Maybe that wasn’t mentioned or maybe i forgot about it by the time i realized haitang tree’s significance nvgjnvgjvg NOW I KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS MEANT when you said its obvious from the beginning he loves Chu Wanning. (i mean im still not super convinced by the narrative; that doggo Mo Ran needs to try harder to connect those two lonely neurons scattered inside that thick skull of his)

4. I dont like that it was mentioned that infatuation pills exist in this universe. I dont like how they are introduced out of nowhere. That could be literally anything. Magic viagra. Or dick enlarging pills. ANYTHING. But no. It has to be infatuation pills. I dont like the fact that it seems like those are important. I really dont like that thought.

5. Shi Mei’s resemblance to Song Qiutong has been mentioned twice by now. Basically every time she appears, Mo Ran makes sure to note how she was similar to Shi Mei. And from what I understand Butterfly-Boned clan is pretty unique in their appearance? Is Shi Mei somehow… related to that clan? Like maybe only in a tiny bit tho… Or he's just THAT pretty <3

6. That person in black at the end of vol 2 is me trying to get my ship to work

But on a serious note, what an ending, what the hell is going on. Did someone else really got reborn as well? Wasn’t it supposed to be rare? tjnfgvtfbvgfnbvgjnik And like… when Mo Ran is trying to figure out who the hell has water element from the people he knows… He basically goes through everyone from the main cast aside from Shi Mei… I CHECKED TWICE. It gives me goosebumps. But Maybe Shi Mei doesn’t have any? Like, his cultivation is super lame.

And the fact that Mo Ran forgot that whole interaction... njrigvkrhiuvrfjhiukvgnh no wonder there's gonna be like 8 books or more....

Perhaps John can help. And perhaps, just perhaps, they can manage to save Sherlock and rid themselves of Mary in one fell swoop.

Junot in Eugène's correspondence of 1813

Just to add to the confusion about Junot’s sojourn in Illyria, I’ve put together a list of excerpts that I could find at first glance about Junot in volume 9 of the DuCasse edition of Eugène’s correspondence. It is quite likely that some letters are missing, DuCasse only publishing what he considered worthy of publication.

For context: Eugène was technically only viceroy of Italy but factually control center for anything connected to the Italian peninsula, Illyria and the Ionian islands, often tasked with support (and soon defense) and communication. He had, however, left for the Russian campaign in mid-1812 and only returned back to Milan on 18 May 1813 (to a complete economical breakdown and the bankrupcy of several Milanese banks due to Napoleon’s »France first!« policy, btw).

Junot, as to him, according to Paul Pisani’s book about Dalmatia, reached Trieste on 25 May 1813 (not sure if this is correct, see below), coming from France where he had been since February (?), following the Russian campaign.

Eugène to Napoleon, Milan, 19 May 1813 […] The news from Illyria is that the Duke of Abrantès is touring the Dalmatian coast.

If Eugène, on the second day of his return home, already has news about Junot in Illyria, the latter must have been in the region for some time before 25 May. Maybe Pisani only meant his official entry into Trieste.

Eugène to Napoleon, Milan, 14 June 1813 [Listing up preparations and fortifications in Italy, then in the provinces not directly under his command] […] I have written to the Duke of Abrantès about the position of Zara and Raguse: I am also writing to him to form some supplies around the points of Laybach to nourish the troops due to assemble there. […] I intend to create two corps for the observation army on 1 July [...]. One of the two corps will be commanded by General Grenier, and, as I think that neither General Miollis, given his age, nor the Duc d'Abrantès, given the state of his health, are suitable for the other corps, I would ask Your Majesty for a general officer, like General Grouchy, if it is true that he is currently unemployed.

This is Eugène for the first time addressing the elephant in the room: Illyria is under command of Junot, and Junot is not fit to command an army, not even an army corps anymore.

Same date, different letter: Sire, I have the honour of reporting to Your Majesty that the latest reports from the sea announce the 4th battalion of the 4th Light Infantry, which I am sending to Dalmatia to relieve the two battalions of the 5th Light Infantry, had happily landed at Trieste. Today's telegraphs from Venice report that a ship and a corvette, a second ship and a frigate are cruising at the tip of Istria. 4 or 5 boats from the latter vessels appeared three days ago in front of Fiume, where they disembarked and caused some disorder in town. I have not yet received a report from the Duke of Abrantès, who, according to what I have just learned, is settling in Gorizia on account of his health, in other words, at one of the farthest ends of his government. I am very upset that Your Majesty has not placed someone in that country who would not cause General Bertrand to be missed as much.

General Bertrand of course being Junot’s predecessor as governor of Illyria. - This letter was the main reason why I wanted to make this post, in particular the last sentence. Eugène actually writes »Je suis faché que Votre Majesté...«., and for Eugène, that’s quite a strong wording. In fact, it’s precisely the wording Napoleon usually uses if he wants to express his strong displeasure at something (only topped by »je suis mécontent«). Eugène daring to openly critisize Napoleon’s decision is highly unusal for him.

But I get his frustration. He was left pretty much alone with everything concerning Italy, be it politics or military, and could not even rely on the governor of the most vulnerable province because Napoleon had decided to put somebody in charge there who was clearly incapable of doing his job.

Which makes me wonder why Napoleon had sent Junot to Illyria in the first place. Sure, maybe he had thought Junot would have nothing but representative duties there, maybe he really had not suspected Austria would change sides. Which would be stupid because his generals in charge of the remnants of the Grande Armée had informed him of Austria’s wavering attitude since at least March 1813, Poniatowsi probably earlier. But as soon as Napoleon realized there was a chance of Austria going to war – and he had realized by this time, hence his insistence Eugène organise the defense of Illyria – it was essential to replace Junot with somebody else.

Why didn’t he do it? Frankly, I feel like he didn’t care. Defending Italy was Eugène’s job, after all. And Napoleon needed all good generals and all good troops in Germany. Same attitude as in Spain.

But in the next letter, Junot for the first time gives a sign of life:

Eugène to Napoleon, Milan, 22 June 1813 […] The Duke of Abrantès answers me that he has taken all the measures to complete the supply of Raguse and Zara, and that he hopes that it will be done very shortly. I recommended that he take preparatory measures to ensure the subsistence of the troops who might perhaps gather towards Laybach.

And some more on the next day, in the next letter:

Eugène to Napoleon, Milan, 23 June 1813 […] I have the honour of sending to Your Majesty several reports from the Duke of Abrantès concerning the presence of the enemy in the Illyrian area and the two small landings they have made near Ragusa and in Istria.

So apparently Junot (or somebody acting for him) was still able to put together reports at this point.

Eugène to Napoleon, Milan, 27 June 1813 Sire, I had the honour of writing to Your Majesty to ask for General Grouchy for one of the lieutenancies of the army of Italy. In the event that Your Majesty does not deem it appropriate to grant me this, I will ask him for General Molitor to command the 2nd lieutenancy. I have already served with this general and I have nothing but praise for him. Your Majesty appears to be considering General Miollis and the Duc d'Abrantès; but I dare to assure you that neither of them is suitable for this command, one because of his age, the other because of his health, given the qualities necessary to train young troops and command them.

Eugène still really fearing Napoleon might put Junot in charge of an army at this point. Also, Napoleon still not having answered Eugène's request from two weeks ago, while time was pressing, shows how much interest he had in events in Italy.

Eugène to Napoleon, Milan, 29 June 1813 […] I report to Your Majesty that on the 24th of this month the enemy made a small landing in Istria near Pola, of approximately 5 to 600 men. He ransacked several houses and particularly the public administrations and took several civil servants with him. I have not yet received detailed reports of this fact from the Duke of Abrantès.

And now the shit hits the fan:

Eugène to Napoleon, Monza, 30 June 1813 Sire, I have the honour of reporting to Your Majesty that I received this morning the two letters that I enclose here as originals. The private information I received concurs with these two reports. I think that it is becoming very urgent, for Your Majesty's service, to appoint a good general officer to fulfil the functions of Governor of Illyria. The Duc d'Abrantès is definitely no longer good for anything, and I think that Your Majesty can authorise him to return to France to look after his health. However, as it was my duty to provide for the most urgent matters, I immediately sent Adjutant Commandant Lecat to Illyria to fulfil the duties of Chief of Staff. He is a very calm and reliable officer, who is used to dealing with details and who will surely carry out the orders he receives.

So this is the point when Junot’s subordinates take the – rather extraordinary – step to write to the next guy up the line they could find, i.e. Eugène, to please please please do something. The something then being Eugène sending somebody who can do Junot’s job, without officially replacing him.

Then we have a brief and rather curious letter from Napoleon, who at this point cannot yet have received Eugène’s last one about Junot needing to be replaced:

Napoleon to Eugène, Dresden, 1st July 1813 My son, I am sending you a letter from the Duke of Abrantès. As you have command of Illyria, I assume that you are providing for the defence of this country.

I really wish there was more information to this. (Does somebody happen to have the 1813 volume of the new Correspondance Générale)? Had Junot complained to Napoleon about a lack of help coming from Italy? Or had he accidentally/on purpose sent reports he should have sent to Eugène to Napoleon directly instead? Some later remarks make me suspect that.

Eugène to Napoleon, Monza, 2 July 1813 I also have the honour of sending Your Majesty the report made to me by the colonel of the gendarmerie of Illyria on the continuing illness of the Duc d'Abrantès. I have written to the Intendant General of the Illyrian provinces asking him to give all his care to the Governor General, to have him carefully guarded at home if his state of insanity continues, and that, if this state causes the slightest scandal, he should send him to France to take care of his health.

Apparently Eugène has received additional information and realizes that it’s become necessary to lock Junot away from the public.

Eugène to Napoleon, Padua, 5 July 1813 Sire, I have the honour of sending word to Your Majesty that a secretary of the Duke of Abrantès is arriving at this moment to tell me verbally, on behalf of the Duke, that the English have landed at Fiume.

This would be the landing mentioned in Eugène’s letter of 14 June, presumably? Or a second one? In any case, sending a secretary all the way to meet Eugène in Italy instead of using the official channels is probably another sign of Junot loosing his cognitive capabilities.

In the meantime, in Germany, Napoleon gets the news:

Napoleon to Eugène, Dresden, 6 July 1813 My son, I have received your dispatch of 1 July with the letter from the consul of Trieste of 28 June. After an event like this, there is not a moment to lose in ordering the Duc d'Abrantès to go home to Burgundy. The administration will pass into the hands of the intendant. You can give this mission to one of your aides-de-camp, who will report to you on everything and submit anything important to your decision. Show this unfortunate man all the kindness his position requires; but remove him quickly from a country where he is a distressing sight.

And because on second thought it probably dawned on him that this situation was, in the end, his own fault for sending Junot to such an important post in the first place, he firmly puts the blame elsewhere one day later:

Napoleon to Eugène, Dresden, 7 July 1813 My son, I am surprised that after everything the Duc d'Abrantès has done you have not sent him back to France. I can only express my displeasure that you have not put an end to such a distressing spectacle for French people in a foreign country. Send him away without delay and, as he must not go to Paris, where he is too well known, he must be taken to his father's home near Dijon. Write to the Minister of War requesting that his wife go to meet him and take him there.

Of course Eugène is not in any position to simply remove and reinstate the highest-ranking official of a French province, an official who has been installed by the emperor. I would not want to hear what Napoleon would have had to say if Eugène actually had done that. 😋 (Just ask Soult, he knows.)

Also, I’m not really very fond of Laure Junot. But she has all my sympathy here, together with Junot’s old father. - Tell his wife and his family to take care of the living carcass we depose on their doorsteps!

The main thing Napoleon seems concerned with about Junot's situation is appearance. Junot must not embarrass the empire. I feel like that's what pains me the most.

Eugène to Napoleon, Venise, 8 July 1813 Sire, I have received the reports on the situation in Illyria which the Duke of Abrantès sent to the Minister of War, and which Your Majesty has done me the honour of returning to me. I have the honour of reporting to Your Majesty of the measures which I considered necessary to take to ensure tranquillity there: […]

This I presume to be the reply to Napoleon’s brief letter from 1st July. (That concerns you, as you’re in charge of that Illyrian stuff.) Apparently, Junot had sent those reports about the situation in Illyria all the way to Clarke in Paris, instead of to Eugène (who repeatedly remarked that he was waiting for reports), and Clarke then had nothing better to do then send it onto Napoleon, who then sent them back to Eugène. It’s not as if these are pressing matters, after all.

Eugène to Napoleon, Udine, 11 July 1813 […] I saw the Duke of Abrantès myself yesterday in Treviso; I could ascertain that he had completely lost his mind and that he badly needed treatment for his health. I took the necessary steps to ensure that two officers and two attendants would bring him back to his family with all possible care, and I arranged for the appropriate funds to be handed over to him, as he was completely destitute in this respect.

Eugène to Napoleon, same date, second letter, apparently somewhat later I have just received the letter which Your Majesty wrote to me concerning the Duc d'Abrantès. Your Majesty will see from the letter I had the honour of writing to Him this morning that I had already taken the measures made necessary by the Duke's health, after ascertaining his situation for myself. I am carrying out the order given to me by Your Majesty concerning Illyria, by immediately sending General d'Anthouard, the only one of my aides-de-camp of a high rank who is currently available.

Which is probably something that should not be overlooked: All this took place during frantic action, and Eugène had to take care of Junot while being overburdened with tasks from reorganizing the military situation between Piedmont and Illyria, putting together an army corps at Laibach and evacuating all mercury and other resources from the Illyrian mines so invading Austrian forces would not get them (explicit order from His Majesty dearest). So loosing his only experienced aide-de-camp was probably not all too welcome at the moment.

Eugène to Napoleon, still 11 July 1813, third letter, in the evening […] Your Majesty will have seen from my previous reports that the Duke of Abrantès is already on his way to France. He is accompanied by two officers and several ordinances. I have given orders that he be handed over to his family in Burgundy, and I have written to the Duke of Feltre so that, in accordance with Your Majesty's intentions, his wife can come and meet him.

Oh, and because Napoleon alone is not enough, now minister of War Clarke also has something to say:

Clarke to Eugène, Paris, 19 July 1813 Monseigneur, the news I have received from Gorizia and the dispatches addressed by Your Imperial Highness to the Emperor, which His Majesty has sent me, have informed me of the unfortunate state in which the Duke of Abrantès finds himself and which no longer leaves him the freedom of mind necessary to maintain the command entrusted to him. The Emperor has deigned to inform me that he is going to provide for the replacement of the General Duc d'Abrantès, and to designate another general officer for this purpose; but, while waiting for His Majesty's choice to be known, it is important that the exercise of military authority not be interrupted in the present circumstances. I have no doubt that this matter has attracted the particular attention of Your Imperial Highness. He is asked to inform me of the arrangements he has ordered to temporarily ensure the service since the departure of the Duc d'Abrantès.

I think that’s 19th century French court speak for »Ey! I’m the minister of war here and nobody tells me about Junot going crazy? What’s going on? You better make sure there’s somebody in Illyria, boy, `cause god knows when Napoleon is going to do something about the situation!«

Napoleon actually did act rather quickly, as Eugène already informs his ADC d’Anthouard five days later about Fouché being the new governor of Illyria.

I believe that’s all mentions of Junot’s deteriorating health in Eugène’s corespondence. Maybe it’s useful to somebody.

5. It's Emoyama, Continued

I'm only listing the final chapter, but the whole little arc about Emoyama is basically the 5th pick. It added a new word to my vocabulary – Emoi. I'd say that on its own warrants a place here. But that's far from the only reason. 

With Najimi tagging along for the ride, these chapters feel like old times again. Komi's got a problem communicating with a classmate, the three stooges (Komi, Tadano, and Najimi) put their heads together to reach an understanding, and goofs ensue. It's fun, it's funny, it's light, and it's sweet. And it's well set up, with Emoyama's reason for crisis (peeling the unripe fruit of Emoi) having occurred quite a while beforehand. 

Add onto that how long Emoyama has been around - she even appears as a teaser in the (current) final scene of the anime... 

...along with Lily Sukida. Now that's what I call venerable. Anytime a character like her finally gets some serious attention it's a surprise, a delight, and a treat. Komi's world is full of sleeper agents waiting for their moment. (Just btw, I super ship Sukida and Emoyama now. Maybe I should write a fic....)

Funniest Joke

Comedy is extremely subjective, so take this category with a grain of salt. But given how much I've had to say about Kawai, I doubt you'll be too surprised: 

When tf did she have time to make this??????? It's all of the buildup that makes this so memorable to me; how Kawai is so serious and intimidating until she bonds with komi. Then it's like a switch flips in her head. She's such a dork. 

The whole of 393 is one joke – Kawai made a DVD about how they'd benefit from marrying her – so I'm saying the whole chapter gets the funniest joke award and calling it day. There's no better way to explain why this one's a winner than to show you some screenshots, so enjoy:

Most Emoi Moment

This award would have gone to the kiss, but there's an underdog who I think has worked harder for it. She's captain of the track team; an aspiring restaurateur; an old friend, a bitter rival, and a true hero; and she's never won a damn thing in her life. She needs this. 

She's Makeru Yadano at the year three sports carnival!!! I bet you were surprised this chapter wasn't mentioned among my top picks; not even the honourable mentions!! That's what we in the biz call a fake out. I could never forget my girl Makeru. 

Something I noticed while writing this - Yadano probably would have won... 

...except that Komi got a head start. You can see that Yadano starts a moment behind (because her teammates are Sarutahiko and Inui, RIP). A relay race is a team effort, so can you really say that Yadano lost? Maybe I'm undermining her personal growth moment. Whoops.

Paam pa du paam!! Chapters 417 & 418 – Ogiya & Super Awesome!!!! 

Well deserved!!!!!!!! Ogiya's story is heartbreaking; he was driven to become a literal man baby to escape the terrible price of popularity. Then Komi becomes the most assertive we've ever seen her as she keeps pushing him to accept her friendship. In the end, barriers are broken down!! Emoi!!!

I'm looking at this now... and Komi saying "It's alright. I'm super strong so I'll make sure you're alright" and the look on Ogiya's face.... that's making me tear up...

I love how Tadano and Ogiya are said to have been hanging out at other times before this event. It creates the feeling that these characters have lives when we aren't looking at them – very cool! It also demonstrates that Tadano attracts socially maladjusted people like a magnet. I'd say it's his gentle nature. 

My warmest thanks to everyone for their submissions.

Phew... I'm knackered. I've been typing this in a document and the word count has passed 4,000... wowzers!

hello everybody, your friendly annoying spaniard is back with more references to spanish culture in pokemon scarlet and violet! here's my previous post btw!

also i'm really thankful for how much y'all are enjoying these :) i'm thinking maybe after i finish the game i could do posts going over the names of the places and the new pokemon designs and their tie-ins into spanish culture (if there's any)!

anyways, let's start!

first of all, just as its leader, medali just looks like your average bland spanish city, that could have been inspired by a thousand different cities across the country. except... there's roman ruins in there! due to its location and general look, i would say the main inspiration for this city is mérida, which is known as the roman capital of spain. founded in 25 BC as augusta emerita, it became the capital of the lusitania province during the roman empire, and it's the best preserved roman city in the country (i went to excavate there for three weeks and loved it there, i really recommend it!). the roman ruins are a unesco world heritage site, and its most recognizable monument is actually the theatre [pic 5], where there's roman-style plays are still performed (i've seen three there and its an unreal experience). due to the look of the theatre in game, it could also be a reference to other roman theatres in the country like bilbilis [pic 6], carthago nova [pic 7], or segobriga's [pic 8].

all of mount glaseado trainers have basque names!!! i don't know if this is the same in the english version, but this is a very neat detail that prepares you for montenevera, which i'll talk about down below. before that tho, i want to redirect you to this post by the incredible blog @beautiful-basque-country where they talk in depth about all references to basque culture in the games! i'll touch on them as well but of course not as good as them :)

anyways, montenevera. just to start, in spanish the name of the town is 'hozkailu town'; 'hozkailu' is 'fridge' in basque (just as 'nevera' is fridge in spanish). the architecture of the town is also reminiscent of basque architecture, with all houses looking like baserri, the traditional houses of that area. the cold setting is also a reference to basque country, being colder than other regions in spain and mount glaseado being a reference to the pyreenees; the westernmost part of them lie in euskal herria (the basque land).

i also love the detail of the candles in honour of the deceased, i don't know how extended is this tradition or if it's practiced in other countries (i imagine it's not uncommon in catholic places???) but at least in my family on the anniversary of a family death we lit up a candle in the house in their memory :)

another fun thing referencing basque culture is that the mc in the gym (i have no idea what his name in the english version is, in the spanish one he's mc bull-a which is fun) speaks in a 'basquified' way, using basque ortography while speaking spanish (switching ch for tx or c for k for example!)

AND BETTER THAN THAT, THE GYM TRAINERS ARE REFERENCES TO SPANISH MUSIC THEMSELVES!!!! i genuinely didn't think i was gonna see amaia montero in a pokemon game, but here we are i guess. anyways, the first trainer, who's named mikel, a basque name (maybe a reference to mikel erentxun?) references the incredibly bop and cultural phenomenon that was uno más uno son siete by fran perea, which served as the opening song for one of the most beloved spanish tv shows ever (it's kinda like our f.r.i.e.n.d.s or, now that i think about it, more like how i met your mother due to the atrocious ending). he talks about 'one plus one not being two' (the song's title translates to 'one plus one is seven'), and directly quotes the song when defeated. i cannot emphazise how incredibly cool and great this is, literally the peak of pokemon. i cannot put into words what i felt when i saw it in game.

but nothing, and i repeat, NOTHING, could have prepared me for the next trainer... she's literally amaia montero, who was the singer of probably the most influencial group in spain from the 2000's (there's no group i can compare it with so you can understand the magnitude of it, maybe paramore but i'm biased cause they're both my favourite groups ever lol): la oreja de van gogh. it is jukebox musical-worthy iconic, that's the grip this band has on spanish society. i was gonna choose one song of them to show to y'all but i simply cannot link only one, so here's a post a made some years ago of my top 25 lodvg songs, please listen to at least one of them you won't be disappointed. anyways, yeah. even the model looks like amaia lol.

finally, i wanted to talk about the real lore behind the history classes for a while, but i always forget lol. i was gonna make a comment in a previous post about the paldean empire being a reference to both the roman and spanish empires but i dismissed it as being too obvious of a reference (like talking about the tauros regional form which... you know, i don't think i even have to talk about it lol). i didn't took a screenshot of it, but in one of the classes she also talks about the origin of the academy, saying that it was 805 years old, being the oldest in the region. well, the oldest university in spain, the university of salamanca, has 804 years (it was founded in 1218! also maybe this means they were planning on releasing the game next year?)

And we're finally back on track with Harcourt, babyyyy. After a month of eh from both me (with the editing) and MelS (writing the next chapter), we both managed to break through our respective blocks.

As of a few days ago, I sent back the edited Chapter 5 to MelS, so he could answer my comments and check the changes. I finally got to read the missing bits (and they are creepy and yucky)... Can't wait to code all of that when it is ready. We definitely need another round of MelS editing the text and me checking it, before I can add that to the file.

Until I get the file back, I'll focus on other projects.

Making a binksi (or a bitsy/bipsi) had been something on my bucket list for a while now (almost a year actually), and I finally got to make one for realsies!

Honestly, the hardest part in all of this... was making the tiles/sprites in 8x8 pixels ;-; Anyway, the code is freely available on itch and my GitHub.

Fixed some accessibility issues yesterday:

textbox not getting in focus properly

links/buttons not changing state when in focus but not hovered

added image descriptions to pictures in French/English

Also added the logos of Twine and SugarCube when the game loads. Those are clickable too.

I have worked a tad more on the UI/missing elements. But not as much as I should have.

Next week, the final update should be out.

This is what I'll be fixing this month. Officially reopened the code files, stared at it, and cried. It's so bad. It's such a mess...

I've made a completely new intro post with all of the place I'm at (if you'd rather not be on Tumblr). It was a long time coming, and now I have clear channels of where I'm posting about stuff. Just need to be consistent...

I've also started migrating old dev logs and posts to my blog, especially the longer ones where I have a lot to say. Since the search function and archive on Tumblr is eh, I get to keep the important ones (not all of them are) in a more organised place. They are still on Tumblr, btw. It's not gone, just copied. It's been nice to revisit old dev logs, and see how far I've come (it's been a long way). It's pretty humbling (especially the typos, omg... I fixed so many of those).

Ray Ray I need to tell someone about these past few weeks bc it’s has been. A Ride. It’s almost been like a fever dream Ray and I need to tell SOMEONE so that I can stop obsessing over everything in my head. I have to let it out, to document this for posterity, sorry for ranting at you.

Let me set the stage for you. It's early September and the 7th anniversary of Undertale's release, as well as the 1st anniversary of Deltarune Chapter 2, are right around the corner and the UT/DR fandoms are salivating because Toby Fox, the creator, announced that there would be an event of some kind, as there has been for the past few years.

On the 5th one we got a magnificent orchestral concert and some lore tidbits. On the 6th we got an incredibly funny and wholesome stream of Deltarune Ch. 1 starring Toby himself, as well as the release of the aforementioned Ch. 2, so hopes were high

Let's tackle the events that followed in chronological order

First thing that happened, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, was that Sans Undertale becomes the Ultimate Tumblr Sexyman and kills the Queen of England (lol). Toby Fox posts a drabble on twitter to commemorate the occasion. Much fanart ensues

2. Shortly after that, Fangamer announces the release of a highly anticipated plushie for a beloved Deltarune character. Said character is a funny psychotic trash gremlin, and is a personification of spam emails from the late 90s, so of course they're highly popular on tumblr (was even one of the contestants of the mentioned sexyman poll), so of course Fangamer somehow managed to capture their energy with the release trailer, which included: someone finding the plush in a literal garbage can, the plush apparently having a magnetized nose so that it can “sniff out” coins, and the plush being soaked in an entire gallon of milk, slurped on, and thrown against the walls??

Despite the weirdness of the trailer, it seems Toby Fox and Fangamer know their people - The fandom goes WILD

3. On September 17th, Toby Fox announces that there will be a charity event themed after the previously mentioned spam character. Initially, we all think it’s just gonna some auctions or giveaways with a quirky design, but it turns out that Toby turned the website hosting the event into a maze chock-full of hidden links, easter eggs, new lore and teasers for the upcoming chapter 3. Also, new secrets and prizes were unlocked as more money was donated. The fandom goes APESHIT. There were people on watch for the entire 24h+ of the duration of the event, fancontent galore, hundreds of analysis posts, and a group of tumblr users made a 75 page Google doc compiling all the secrets and lore as they were revealed.

Btw the prizes included the gremlin’s “dirty socks”, him “after not surviving”, a body pillow, a “wedding ring”, toilet paper themed after him, and an “ass-scented” candle

(no, I was not kidding about the candle)

I wonder who gets to explain to the kids benefiting from the charity that their lives were made better because over a million people liked this garbage man so much they donated over $320,000 for some of his backstory

4. About halfway through the charity event, we unlocked a Q&A with the gremlin, who had “taken over” Fangamer’s twitter account. Some of the tweets seem to imply the gremlin is bisexual and the ex of a character from Deltarune Ch 1?? Predictably, much fanart and fanfics ensue

5. Near the end of the event, the last item to be unlocked by donations (which wasn't in the initial list of items available and appeared out of nowhere btw) was the gremlin’s “fate”, and we were told fans had to donate either towards “Freedom” or “Silence”. There was tons of speculation as to what this meant exactly for hours before finally “Freedom” won with ~$58,000 in favor

I saw several people among the donations towards Freedom saying stuff along the lines of "noooo he can't die he just came out as bisexual!", it was so funny 😂

Fun fact: out of the ~$29,000 for Silence, apparently around $15,000 were donated by Toby Fox and Fangamer with the caption "he can't get away with this!", which is so freaking funny asfdgfngfd his own creator lmao, top 10 anime betrayals

6. After the charity event was finished, there was an announcement that there would be a commemorative stream. We all thought it would be similar to the stream that happened on last year’s anniversary, especially since the people in the thumbnail were the same ones who participated in the previous one.

Instead, we got an unhinged, extremely cursed video where some guy wearing a costume of the spam character announced the winners of each item and narrated several poems praising the spam character, all in an old glitchy TV style.

It included: the guy putting whole blue eggs in his mouth, infomercials for a fake product which was later said to explode, the assistant eating pasta with a vacant expression on his face, and several segments where they seemed to pray?? as if the gremlin was their god or something.

Near the end of the stream, the people in the thumbnail appeared and said that someone had illegally hijacked their stream and that the FBI were on their way to apprehend him. The guy in the costume then ran away saying that he was not actually the gremlin, and had just been hired to play the part BY the gremlin. Y'know, despite how crazy it was, I'm really glad I was there for all of it. It really Avengers Assembled the community too, we were all making theories about the new lore, documenting new findings, making art and writing fics shipping the gremlin with his ex 😂

I really do hope you play one or both of the games someday Ray, because even setting aside the fantastic storytelling, music, and characters, if you're careful and find your little niche of creators then the community is fantastic.

btw, do you already dislike Xander? I'm kinda hoping you're going to start writing rants about how much he sucks lmao, but tbf his worst moments are yet to come. I also hope you'll end up hating another male character that most people love, much to my chagrin.

Alright! No more letting this ask sit. Anon, I hope you're around and doing well because we're finally gonna talk about Xander Harris.

I wanted to answer this at different points during my Buffy journey and now, towards the end of season 5, I have to say that... Xander's fine. I totally get where your hope comes from, my notorious Finn posts and all and though I'll get into aspects of Xander I dislike in a moment, I'm afraid I can't be the manhater you need on this occasion. From what I've seen though he's not that well-loved? In my limited experience anyway. So the Finn Hudson effect doesn't apply in that sense, either.

Where I would be frustrated with Xander in similar ways I am about Finn's ch is that sometimes he is framed in an annoying way. He never gets even just called out for lying to Buffy at the end of season 2 or acting like a major asshole in 3x02. All the Scoobies are coming at Buffy there, sure, but none with such vehemence and in such a self-righteous way. Self-righteous hypocrites really piss me off. Had I answered this at the start of season 3 I probably would have been much harsher on Xander than I'm gonna be now. His Angel hatred was so irrational and not worthy of an "I told you so" upon Angelus' turn and it's irritating how entitled he is to Buffy's decisions. Not to mention, I don't care if him sulking about Buffy's rejection is realistic teen boy behaviour, it's tedious and embarrassing. She made it clear that she was not interested and Xander was such an ass about it. His crush on Buffy was a pain to get through and frankly, I don't think Xander deserved either of the girls he's been with since. Cordelia most definitely not and I think Anya deserves better, too, because she's genuinely devoted whereas it really feels like Xander's with her just because it's convenient for him.

His latest really, really annoying moment was his Riley speech to Buffy but honestly I'm just so glad Riley's gone so I'm gonna swiftly move past that. Whatever, Xander tried helping Buffy and luckily she was too late to act on his advice. What stupid advice, anyway, as if Riley was one in a million. Hon, he was literally the 999,999 in a million.

And I said I wouldn't go hard on the guy, huh? Lmao well that was pretty much the list of my grievances. In general? Xander's... fine. He's not gonna be my favourite Scooby in any scenario, no way, but I think since mid-season 3 he's been a lot more tolerable and even enjoyable on occasion. He does feel sort of useless at times but that's acknowledged and a part of his journey so I appreciate that. I don't fully buy into him being the Heart of the group as that position is something that I hold precious, see Katara in ATLA. And no way Xander can even touch what someone like Katara represents within her group dynamic. But I also see that being the Heart is mostly about courage here, loyalty, and as much as he makes mistakes I gotta give Xander that.

Even in that interpretation I struggle with the guy because a) he does have these icky sexist moments that are just not funny and they're meant to be and b) he's not... that full of heart. I just think pettiness gets in the way too often and, compared to someone like Willow's flaws his are more annoying and in general, more. He's not quite the Nice Guy syndrome because he is general a genuinely good friend to Buffy and the others but I wish he wasn't such a teen boy. Or, if he was, cause ya know they unfortunately do exist, that he was framed just a little more critically. I get that that's too much to ask of Whedon's late 90s feminism but it would make Xander an easier character to vibe with. I mean, I'm guessing there must be a reason I had zero idea about his existence prior to watching the show but had a vague idea of most other Scoobies. I knew so many things about Willow and was aware of chs like Oz, Cordy and Tara, but I was half-expecting Xander to only last a season or two. Because surely, if he was there for the whole show I would have heard people talk about him already.

So, yeah, it might not sound like it because I more so talked about the negatives than positives but I don't hate Xander by any means. He's not frustrating enough to be loathed or ranted about but he's also not nearly engaging enough to be on the level of the other Scoobies. He has his moments, though, and more often than not I find myself enjoying Xander-centric episodes. Soooo... is that anything? I hope I don't disappoint but now that I'm at the end of season 5 maybe you can share more about your Xander thoughts, I'd be happy to listen.
