Tumblr, Native Hawaiians need your help!

So the gist of it is the construction of the 30 meter telescope on top of Mauna Kea is starting. Its peak is 4,207.3 m above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Which is why it is deemed the perfect place for the telescope. The only thing is, Mauna Kea is sacred land, our ancestors never built on top of Mauna Kea and for good reason. Sacred land is to never be messed with. It's a burial ground for native Hawaiians' most revered ancestors, and believed to be a peak created by the gods as a place from which humans can ascend to heaven. A lot has been taken away from native Hawaiians and there is already telescopes built on Mauna Kea we do not need anymore desecration of our land. Protect Mauna Kea

Most of you must’ve heard about the events in Hawaii. I am not Hawaiian myself, but I do believe in people, in nature, in tradition and in morality. I believe in taking care of our planet, I believe in respect and in kindness. Nothing should come at the price of other people.

Today, many of us have Kalaeloa / Kahuku on the forefront of our hearts/minds. As part of our hui will be making their way out to Kalaeloa tonight to answer the kahea and stand in solidarity, I'll be praying for all who continue to put their bodies on the line because of their ancestral sukubun / kuleana to mālama 'āina  - including all the kia'i at Kalaeloa, Hūnānāniho, Kahuku, and Mauna Kea.   I also continue to hold close to my heart and in my prayers all those across the Pacific and back on Turtle Island who who are working to protect and heal our precious land and water. In my dreams last night, I saw the tears and laughter lines on the faces of some of our brave elders holding the line at Henoko. They couldn't hear me when I tried to speak to them,  but they smiled when I joined hands with the kia'i and fellow Shimanchu here on these islands and sang... On that note, the crew here at Bachman continue to hold protocol 3x daily, every day at 8am, noon, and sunset*. 

At 4pm today, some of Kumu Snowbird's haumana will be leading our weekly workshop. If you're in the area, come join us to learn/practice the hula, mele, oli, and pule used in protocol for the Mauna.

I would like to be clear about something. Hawai’i is not anti-science. We aren’t the backwards barbarians living in the past that some people would like to make us seem. . . In Hawai’i we have a profound love of nature, a deep sense of aloha ‘āina, and a long history of studying the world around us. Most of us believe that science and Hawai’ian culture can coexist, but that requires the scientific community to show us the same respect that we have for them. . . We want advancement as a cooperative effort. We want to explore the stars and learn about space, but not at the expense of our traditions and our home. . . Mauna Kea already houses 13 observatories, it does not need another. We will not be railroaded in the name of the “greater good” when that greater good is defined by Eurocentric norms that do not account for our values and history. . . We don’t need to be saved. #decolonize #Repost @riseindigenous ・・・ For over a decade the Kia’i have been actively protecting the sacred mountain of Mauna Awakea from TMT, a 1.4 billion dollar Thirty Meter Telescope project which would dig down over 7 stories into the sacred mountain & contaminate a sacred fresh water source. This type of construction is illegal in Hawai’i, but to put it on top of one of the most sacred mountains to the Kanaka Maoli, is devastating, & so the Kia’i rise once again. In the past few weeks it was stated that construction would in fact begin, so land defenders have begun to stand up to stop any construction from taking place. Beginning with a line of Kupuna or elders (33 have been arrested so far), line after line forming of Mana Wahine (women), & then Kane (men) in solidarity to protect the Mauna from construction vehicles moving equipment up the mountain. All of those at the base of the Mauna have made a vow of Kapu Aloha, & stand in peaceful non-violent solidarity & pule or prayer to protect their sacred mountain. The Governor of Hawai’i has declared a state of emergency & has brought in police from all islands & the National Guard to attempt to remove the Kanaka Maoli & their allies from the Mauna so that the TMT construction may commence. But the solidarity is strong & will not break. Now more than ever we must put our prayers & solidarity to Hawai’i, to support the Kia’i in protecting this sacred site. This is a moment that reflects the way we treat all Indigenous people & our earth. We must stand with Mauna Kea, we must support our relatives in Hawai’i, the time is now!
