Julance Week One: Broadsword/Youth

A broadsword. Lance stared blankly down at the weapon he held, red and white, gleaming under the harsh training deck lights. Its weight in his hands was unfamiliar, and yet, somehow felt right in a way he loathed. The sword had manifested seemingly at random-- one second, he'd been shooting at bots in the training room, satisfied with the way they dropped at his feet.

"Fuck yeah," he muttered under his breath as another clang sounded. The blue holographic screen lit up with a happy 'ding,' signifying another slain foe. He whipped around to face the next batch, no hesitation present in any of his movements as he dodged, shot, dodged, kicked out, moved faster, sharper, panting for breath.

So the sword shouldn’t have had any reason to appear! Really, it was all a misunderstanding. As the training drones closed in on him, their little propellers whirring in violent chirps, Lance had only barely conjured the idea for a split second. It wasn’t even a thing! Lance had been standing there, face flushed, sweat trickling down the back of his neck, his trigger finger aching. The idea came from an exhausted daze.

Man, he inwardly lamented, eyes focused on the drones closing in. I wish Keith was here.

Boom. Sword. Lance slashed through the clump of bots without pause until the program had run its course.

That thought had been purely utilitarian, of course. First of all, Keith was with the Blade, and was doing much better there! Obviously he couldn’t actually have Keith’s help in a stupid fucking training exercise. It was just that the robots seemed to get in too close for his weapon to be really effective, it being a rifle and all. He hadn’t expected anyone to be listening to his stupid wandering mind and its stupid wandering fixation on a stupid, wandering, mulleted asshole.

He should have known better. Everything about space had been freaky and magical, so why couldn’t his own goddamn gun have a brain?

Lance let out a small, quiet sigh, watching the way his wrist rotated the sword around in a move that he’d seen plenty of times between urgent missions. Rotate in. Rotate out. The tip of the blade formed little infinities in the air, while the flat of it reflected his lost expression back to him. His eyes were half-lidded and his teeth were gritted.

Lance McClain truly couldn’t have one goddamn thing of his own, could he? Doomed to have Keith’s leftovers for the rest of his life, Lance couldn’t help but draw up images of this exact moment happening fifty times before.

A starry-eyed kid who only got to be an attack pilot after a dropout punched a commander. A throwaway paladin who only assumed the red lion once the original pilot had left for brighter things. And now this.

Being the youngest in a large family meant he was no stranger to hand-me-downs, but Keith Kogane’s always left a bitter taste in his mouth. Like he was almost strong, almost talented, chasing after a perfect Grecian champion he’d never catch.

Keith always left him behind with some nagging reminder of his existence, of the fact that Lance could try as hard as he wanted and still never quite meet his standard.

The sword fell to the ground, transforming back into a bayard. Its clatter echoed off of sterile walls with resonating finality. Lance didn’t spare it another glance as he walked out of the training deck.

He was tired of running after an apparition.

voltron paladins and my personal takes on their diplomatic skills

Lance: Season 1 & 2 Lance? Terrible diplomatic. I feel like early show Lance just blurts out whatever he thinks is funny which...a lot of people/aliens might not. Definitely offends some planets with his jokes and flirting. However, I think Lance grows into a good diplomat.

Keith: It's a toss up. He's quiet during diplomatic events, so he doesn't have the chance to say anything offensive. However, his silence can be taken as either seriousness/attentiveness or rudeness/standoff-ish. It depends on the culture of the planet.

Pidge: She's a good diplomat on planets that respect science. Because that means they respect her and will talk to her about things she's interested in. On other planets, she's the same as Keith.

Hunk: I think he's the best diplomat so far. Hunk is a good listener and he's empathetic. He's skilled as an engineer (science), a voltron pilot (fighting), and cooking (culture), which gives him a wide base of things to discuss with others. I think his empathy would truly resonate with planets affected by the war.

Shiro: Is a good diplomat, not because of natural traits, but because he acknowledges diplomatic missions as a part of his full time job as paladin. He's constantly clocked in at work. Everytime he's at a meeting he gets possessed by a broke student working a 9-5 who desperately doesn't want to get fired. This man will definitely hate fake pleasantries and meetings but he will suffer through them.

Allura: Has all the skills to be a good diplomat. Is generally a good diplomat. However, I feel like she'd be the most likely to get offended by a dignitary as the war is very, very personal to her. Some bozo would make a comment about Altea's downfall and she'd be fighting for her life not to deck them. She generally has restraint.

Coran: Thinks he's an extraordinary diplomat. In reality, he is simply a good diplomat. He can talk well and captivate an audience but bro has no TMI. His guests will go from "HAHAHA" to "oh..." within seconds of a story. His passion wins people over.

“See now was that so hard? ^,_,^” he says while booping Keith nose. Then he pulls out his magic storage bag and goes rummaging in it.

“So you want to hide food so no one will get um right? Well if you want to do that, you need to start being smart about it. Take it from me mullet, I have four siblings and we would fight over snacks all the time. So I learned early on how to effectively hide snacks without my siblings finding um.”

He pulled out a few plastic bags from his magic bag.

“Lesson #1. Store your snacks properly. Before you stick your snacks in a hiding place, you got to make sure they are properly sealed in a bag so that they stay fresh and don’t spoil quickly. It also keeps people from being able to smell um and find um easily. If you can’t smell um, you don’t know they’re there.”

TERRIBLE AT COMMUNICATING. We all know Keith is stubborn and easily overwhelmed with a short temper. He doesn’t really know how to talk to people without getting angry. He feels that bc he has a hard time explaining exactly what he means, people never understand him and that makes him mad.

Bro isn’t scared of anything…and that low key scares everyone else. Like…who isn’t afraid of anything? The whole team has tried sooooo hard to figure out what will get Keith to jump out of his skin and scream like a child but to no avail… Boy just doesn’t flinch, doesn’t care, couldn’t care less about bugs and rodents and clowns and heights or anything like that.

Wears his gloves in the shower sometimes. Like wtf ???

Actually very selfless and not self-centered in the slightest. Keith is very giving and helpful, despite his tough exterior, he’s very caring, observant and considerate. He’ll give the shirt off his back to someone in need. He’s always down to help others. Ugh Sweet heart ❤️‍🔥

Obvi his biggest red flag is how flirty he is. Boy will flirt with anything that breaths and that can get really annoying sometimes and affect the rest of the team.

Jealous AS FUCK. Like the petty jealous type. Lance is the kind of guy to pretend he has a partner back home just bc some alien girl he was flirting with said she had a partner already. He’s like “OH YEAH? Wow cool me too, same same, yeah….” But homie’s ego is a bit sore now…

Lies a lot. Lance just panics sometimes and tells a lie. He knows it’s wrong and he always feels guilty after lying to someone but it always just slips out. His mouth moves faster than his brain most the time.

THE BEST HUGGER/CUDDLER OMFGGGGGG. Lance is the best hugger and cuddle buddy ever, period, end of story, try to change my mind. His long arms always stretch fully around the recipient’s torso and he squeezes tight enough to make you feel warm but not smothered. Usually will rest his chin on the other person’s head if they’re short enough (so Pidge obvi).

Very aware of other’s moods/body language/tone of voice. Everyone thinks Lance is “the dumb one” but he’s actually very in tune with what’s going on in the moment, what’s going on around him. I think he can tell how others feel the second he sees them. Good intuition kinda thing. An empath for sure.

Very considerate and often remembers the little things about people. Does he remember what he learned in class just a couple days ago? Pffft heck no! Does he remember everyone’s birthday, every year and get them a very thoughtful gift? HELL YEAHH I LOVE THIS SWEET BOY OMFG 🩵

Lowkey kinda moody and can get snappy very easily. Pidge is a sweet heart and very smart and a good team player but she’s also stubborn and will yell to get her point across or make herself heard (she’s an Aries…what’d you expect?)

Sometimes very conceited and braggy about how smart she is. Like yeah Pidge, we know you’re a genius and you could code in your sleep. WE GET IT. UR SMART. GEEZ 😒

Like Lance, I think Matt would be overly flirty and act like a Fuck boy sometimes. Like bro sit your nerd ass down, that person is SOOO out of your league plz chill.

Can not take anything seriously (unless it comes to his family or his or anyone else’s safety) but day to day, Matt makes so many dumb and inappropriate jokes at the worst times. Ugh 😒

guys I’m honestly happy that klance didn’t become canon because I love how as a collective group of people we utilize our right to explore what could have been and create the most smoking hot scenarios ever and yes I obviously wanted more of their friendship growing into this bond stronger than anything else in the universe especially since Voltron has teamwork and family as one of their main lessons but that’s more of a development issue all around…ok besides that there’s something about klance where it provides this PERFECT environment for shippers to inhabit and FEAST upon. With klance, there’s a solid, engaging dynamic between the two set up, which is this weird one-sided rivalry that stems from Lance’s insecurity and his need to prove himself of his worth and Keith literally being one of the best pilots for his age but since they’re flung into space and chosen to become child soldiers in this 10,000 year old intergalactic war so they have to work as a team which surprise surprise forces them to put aside their differences and work as a team which is shown a bunch when Keith needs to become a leader and Lance steps up as his right hand and and they have some kinda tender moments that won’t definitely drive shippers into a shipping craze (or worse) SO YEAH you could see why people loved it with all the classic tropes and mutual growth all that schmooze (ALSO THEY KNEW EACHOTHER BEFORE THE MAIN PLOT??? Well maybe not like friends or even acquaintances probably BUT HELLO?????? EVEN MORE SHIT TO EXPAND ON????), and they share multiple scenes that could be interpreted as romantic but there’s no explicit romance. This environment is fucking dripping drenched flash flooded cornered by 1000ft tsunamis in all directions with potential for shipping, so when people saw this relationship between two bros with this sort of homoerotic (IM JOKING. Kinda.) unresolved tension towards each other and the POTENTIAL for a good slow burn rivals to friends to lovers, it was to no one’s surprise that they went APESHIT. Klancers made countless different ways where they get together whether it be pre-Kerberos, post-gettingthefuckoutofearth, the start of the show, the end of the show, after the end of the show, right smack in the middle, anywhere, anytime, for who the fuck knows why just ANY REASON DAMN IT it doesn’t really matter because people were pumping out fanfiction or fan art or any fan media of klance faster than I spit out a raw baby carrot after chewing it for one second and now we’re all wallowing about how it should have been KICK but the thing is that if VLD did KICK all the way to Altea, the production of these beautiful stories that so many people have and still are coming up with about klance kissing in midst of a battle, helping each other with their crippling nightmares, smiling for the stars or some other sad premise, and whatever is nestled in his pulse…just like uhhh the amount of fics like these that go into great detail about Keith and Lance in these random situations that end up with them getting together being produced would go down to some degree because of the fact that if the people’s beloved sharpshooter and samurai had ended up together like we had wanted, and the majority was satisfied with the ending the creators had given, people would have shifted from writing about “How could Lance and Keith get together?” to writing about “What could Lance and Keith do now that they’re together?” And like. There’s nothing wrong with that honestly I would be HYPED if klance was ever canon but there is profound beauty in the way the community is able to create more from less and turn a show that went to shit in the last few seasons shine even brighter than it did at its prime. Like I wouldn’t trade my favorite fics 4 anything.

Ok another little thing I’m going to put here: With Klance, all I wanted was for them to be great friends 😭😭😭. I tend to prefer klance becoming canon in later seasons or at the end or even an open ending with no confirmed romantic relationships because I am a sucker for character development and the idea of Keith and Lance both harboring these feelings that at first are just admiration and respect but then escalate to yearning for one another or becoming close friends at the end of the show and getting to imagine anything I want post canon is EVERYTHING if you give me S7 Garrison klance I’ll keel over and thank you like I was a second away from dying of thirst and your gift was a truck load of water

These Walls Have Ears by notverystraight

Before Lance’s friends arrive at his apartment for their weekly movie night, Keith is in Hunk’s car on the phone to Lance, trying to explain why they’re late, again. Mid conversation, Keith drops his phone under the seat. Assuming Lance has hung up, Pidge and Hunk start pestering Keith about certain feelings that he may be harboring, leading to some quite personal confessions. Little do they know, Lance has not hung up, and is listening in on every word. Shenanigans ensue.

the second best part of this fic is how sweet and funny this is. this fic is blushy and silly and dorky and so so so!!! it is just fun and garrison trio my love. the BEST part of this fic is lance knowing hes hot shit

2. That Won't Last, He's Gay and She's An Alien by notverystraight

Lance didn’t know what he’d expected to see when he came onto the Garrison’s training deck, but it definitely wasn’t this. Keith was panting with exertion, pinning someone to the ground with the edge of his training sword just brushing their neck. And by someone, Lance meant Acxa, one of Lotor’s old half-Galra generals. Or, Lance walks in on Keith and Acxa sparring. He has not-so-mixed feelings about it.

usually every jealousy trope fic i read induces the PHATTEST eye roll literally of all time but this one made me laugh lol. its just such a ridiculous concept and its fun basically. also krolia lowkey being a thot is hilarious

3. Go the Distance by orphan_account [EXPLICIT]

Keith is a sprinter, Lance runs long distance. Despite not competing against each other directly and despite the fact that they're training to bring glory to the same high school track team, the two end up becoming rivals who are wholeheartedly committed to victory. Along the way, however, they find themselves awfully sidetracked by the other's inspiring legs--er, skills. Much fluff and smut and no angst.

bro lance is SUCH a goober 😭😭 he gets himself into the most embarrassing situations and there is truly no one he can blame but himself. honestly this one is such a fun read and if the explicit warning bothers you, it's not the whole fic! you can easily skip it. the rivalry and getting together is just as fun and stupid as you'd expect from them truly

4. Haunted House Hang-Up by Creatortan

Keith runs a paranormal investigation YouTube channel with his friend, Pidge. Pidge is friends with Hunk, who is friends with Lance, who is very, very haunted. And also, very, very pretty.

Being Keith’s Older Sibling

Being Keith’s older sibling is definitely a hard feat in itself

After the death of your guys’ dad, things kinda went downhill for both of y’all

Your general mistrust and attitude towards people brushed off on little Keith, which comes to play later in his life as we’ve seen he was a more troubled kid

So while you tried your best to be a good role model for Keith growing up, it was hard to do so when all he ever saw from you was your aggression towards adults who tried separating you both

Eventually, social services do separate you guys, claiming that it would be best to allow Keith to grow without your negative influences but the damage had been done

Keith would grow up to not trust many people in his life because of your separation, always finding ways to sneak off and see you at the school they sent you to

It was times like those where you would promise to take him away from this place, from Earth, and live a life where you won't lose each other again

Because of this, Keith also developed a habit of lying to his guardians about his whereabouts because of your own attachment to him, encouraging him to continue this behavior 😭😭😭

Man none of yall knew better😭💔💔

But as you grew older, you, unfortunately, were sent away to the city to continue your studies there, cutting all contact with your little brother

Keith would then take an interest in flying and would go on to attend the Garrison to learn to become a pilot while you made plans every day to once again be reunited with him

I feel like it would take some time to leave the city and go back to your hometown because of the lack of resources available to you

So by the time you reach the Garrison after finding out he's been attending the school, it would be around the time he flunked out and disappeared

Fate is not fair to yall (crying)

So you get a job at the garrison while trying to find Keith and some time passes (YAY TIME SKIP)

After seeing it was Keith who caused the explosions, he doesn't recognize you until you all get to the cabin

This is your little brother... He's all grown up now, but in a way, he still looks the same. He's so much taller now, his hair is longer, and he would look at you with a familiar distrust you recognized

It was the same look he would give others when you guys were younger

The worst part is that he doesn't even recognize you because its been YEARS since he's last seen you

So it's a bit of a shock for him when you reveal that hey! I'm your sibling! And I've been trying so hard to get back to you for YEARS!

The dynamic between you both is kind of a weird thing tbh

While you're still holding onto the past and the younger version of Keith you remember, Keith has since let go of what the past held, ready to start a new future with his older sibling in his life

Because you're still holding onto this past, you treat him as if he's still a child and appear somewhat coddling in a way

You're just so excited and happy to be reunited with Keith again that you forget he's since then grown up. He's learned to be independent from years spent alone

And while Keith does miss you as well, he isn't used to having this new 'guardian figure' in his life, only used to the freedom and advice given to him from others, especially Shiro

Speaking of Shiro, I think you would go to him for advice on the blockage between you both since he basically raised Keith after you had left.

He knows Keith better, as much as it hurts you to admit it

Shiro would definitely tell you to give Keith space, to give him time to adjust to the new changes in his life. He's still a teen and is still learning to deal with his emotions, so just give him space to fully digest the situation at hand

You take this advice to heart and tread carefully, which Keith appreciates A LOT

Like imagine you grow up with unrestricted freedom, being able to do whatever you want and just learning to take care of yourself, and then one day, an authoritative figure appears in your life and begins setting up these restrictions. Telling you to be careful, making small rules that break your routine entirely

That's what Keith felt when you began making your presence more known in his life since you believed that you had to keep protecting him from the world

But he's grown up

He shows you that he doesn't need you protecting him anymore

It's bittersweet for you to see him not need you and makes you sad that you missed out on basically his childhood

BUT HE'S SO SWEET IN LETTING YOU KNOW THAT YOU'LL BE THERE FOR HIM NOW AND HIS FUTURE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

AND THAT HE'LL BE THERE FOR YOURS TOO😭😭😭

There's just TOO MUCH I can say about being Keith's older sibling, like it's such a complex relationship I would love to develop more on!!!!

“Uh, I'll try to have your car ready soon,” Keith told Lance.  He seemed to press his hands more deeply into his pockets.  Lance thought he might tear right through them.  “If you've got any questions, you can just call the shop and ask for me.” “Sure,” Lance said.  “Thank you for this.  For bringing me.  And for earlier.” “Of course,” Keith said earnestly.  His dark eyes were fixed upon Lance's, unwavering and deep.  “Anytime.” Lance wanted to believe he meant that. “What if I've got a question while you're not at work?” Lance asked, deciding he might as well try. Keith blinked at him. “There's an answering machine,” he blankly replied.  “Or someone'll take a message.” “Right,” Lance said.  “But what if it's urgent?” “Urgent car questions?” Keith said, brow creasing in confusion. “Never mind,” Lance said, laughing in embarrassment.  “Right, so I'll just leave a message if something comes up.” “Sure —” Keith cut himself off and something seemed to click.  His eyes widened and he seemed to lean closer to Lance, a smile beginning to pull at the edges of his lips.  “Or, well, actually, maybe I could give you my number —” An abrupt chirp interrupted him, and Keith went still before his jaw tensed considerably and he reached into his pocket.  He pulled out his phone and frowned at it as it continued chirping.  He looked at Lance, back at his phone, and smiled tightly. “Sorry, I gotta take this,” he said.  “Excuse me.”  He stepped aside and jabbed at his phone.  Then Lance heard him hiss, “Shiro, I swear to god, someone better be dying —”  And then he grew too far to overhear. “That was painful to watch,” Hunk muttered, and Lance blushed as he turned to pout at him.  “What?” Hunk said.  “It was.  It was like watching two high schoolers fumble around with their feelings.  You just met this guy today?  How are you this smitten already?” “Hunk!” Lance gasped in betrayal.  “You're supposed to be my bro!” “And as your bro,” Hunk said, “I'm telling you that was hilariously embarrassing to watch.” Lance gasped, mortally offended. “I think it is adorable you have a crush,” Shay said, lightly teasing and patting his shoulder.  Lance turned betrayed eyes onto her as well, but did not have the heart to scold her.  Shay was so sweet and she meant every word she said with utmost love and kindness.  He just could not say a word against her. Lance sighed, and before he could say anything, Keith was rushing back to them, expression serious. “I'm sorry, I have to go,” he said as he climbed onto his bike and slapped on the helmet.  He started the engine at once, not even waiting for an answer.  “It was great meeting you all.  Sorry, again.”  And then he sped away so fast, he was a blur.  Lance was pretty sure motorcycles were not supposed to be that fast that quick.  He blinked after him, feeling at a loss. “Oh, that is a shame,” Shay said.  “Are you alright, Lance?” “I'm fine,” Lance sighed.  “Bummed out, but fine.” “What's with the jacket?” Hunk said then, and Lance looked down at himself, blinking. “Oh, he forgot his jacket!” Lance said, pulling it off and holding it out like Keith would race back for it.  He pouted when there was no sign of him. “Oh, but he will want it returned,” Shay said, a smile blossoming across her face.  “He may come back for it!” “And if not,” Hunk added as he started picking up Lance's things from the sidewalk, “you can always use it as an excuse to see him again!”  Shay walked over to take the books. “You're right,” Lance said, smiling to himself.

It was when I was on my way to my car after picking up groceries. When I saw a villain heading towards me. As the villain almost got too close to me, Rumi showed up & kicked the villain and went flying. After Rumi sees the villain up in the sky, she asked me if I was alright. I told her that I'm totally okay and thank her for protecting me.

Rumi doesn't really have a sense of humor. She'd find any funny videos to make me laugh.

She shows affection to me is by giving me surprise small gifts. I thank Rumi for the small gifts she gives me, along with a hug & a kiss.

The best day I ever had with Rumi would be when she & I went hiking on a trail few weeks ago. It was a very nice out! Then during the evening, she & I went to the beach to play volleyball for a bit & watch the sunset together. Once she & I got home from the beach, we relax together on the couch while watching a movie for the night

I comfort Rumi by putting my arms around her & use my sweet words to her. Rumi comforts me by cuddling me & gives me small kisses.

Rumi & I do play video games together. Most of them are fighting video games. Our favorite video games would be Super Smash Bros. & any Dragon Ball Z video games.

I love vld fanfics but Im not a huge fan of how Hunk and Pidge are mischaracterized in some of them. In like a quarter of the fics I've read the author tends to hone on traits like Hunk's nosiness/being loose-lipped or Pidge's blunt rudeness. And that's great! But it tends to be in a way that makes them bad friends to the rest of the team. And obviously people can have negative traits and not be perfect friends, but these are characters who care so deeply about friendship and family.

Hunk is loyal to the bone and Pidge has literally travelled to the ends of the universe to search for her family. If they did anything hurtful they'd genuinely try to amend their actions and not just brush it off.

A massive example is fics where Keith tells Hunk something (maybe that he likes Lance) and Lance confronts Keith about it because Hunk told him. And Hunk is like "heehee sorry! You know I have to tell my best bro everything!" Then nothing is made of the fact that Hunk broke Keith's trust since Keith and Lance got together so everything was 'okay'.

No! That's terrible! This might be my personal bias, but a good friend would keep your secret unless it's harming you or others. I don't think canon or fanon Hunk would do this. And if he did, I think he'd try to find a way to make up for it.

In the middle of writing this I realized how passionate I acc am about this lmao maybe because I'm such a private person and value things like trust. I'm also not a huge fan of fics where the team meddles in Klance's relationships to get them together or confess something. A) they have lives they don't have time for that. And B) it makes things messy and just!! Bad friends!?!? Even if you have good intentions you shouldn't interfere in something where people's emotions are involved unless they asked you to because that could mess with them.

This is not some sort of hate train to people who have written these things or a request that people stop writing them. Please create whatever you want however you want. Everyone has a different interpretation of media, this is mine, and it's totally, very cool, if yours reflects opposite sentiments.
