it’s kind of wonderful to watch Jeremy handle Jean’s trauma because the foxes are so used to each other being fucked up and problematic that when blood spills out of Neil’s locker and he says that he doesn’t want to talk about it they go okay fucked up but sure. Jeremy is so insistent with Jean’s issues and thinks that he just needs to talk about it and pushes and pushes and just begs him to tell him what’s going on. Because that’s the world of trauma he’s used to. He’s used to a problem shared is a problem halfed and being a shoulder to cry on that when Jean says “I’m traumatised” he thinks, “talking about it will make you feel better.”

He handles Jeans trauma with this messy heavy hand and he means so well but his version of trauma, his perspective on trauma is so far removed from the trauma the foxes or the ravens are used to. Every single minute detail Jean reveals is shocking and insane and fucked up and he’s barely scraping the surface. How do you tell someone who thinks you can talk through your problems that you’re afraid of water because you were waterboarded, or that you are so used to your body being used that it’s no longer that Jean feels as if he deserves his abuse, it’s no longer that he thinks his punishments were normal. They are facts. They are core unmoving beliefs so ingrained in him they are set into his skin like the tattoo on his cheek. They’re going nowhere. Jeremy will never understand that, and every thing Jean tells him disturbs him more than the last. He’s so empathetic and compassionate - I think if Jean told him the truth, it would destroy him. It would destroy his spirit, his belief in others, his faith in kindness. It would make him angry. It would make it impossible not to annihilate the Ravens for what they did in the dirtiest, meanest way possible.

And I cannot wait to watch that all happen.

Why is no one talking about the fact that Jean's brain short circuited when he saw Jeremy with his hair dyed and instead of finishing his sentence he just went "blonde" like the sucker he is. Because that is one of the next to best scenes in the whole book everyone can fight me it was hilarious.

Fucking… if there was ever a reason for him to stop drinking, it would be the reveal that he was unfaithful while drunk. (Name) has a right to be angry, but damn, does she have to yell at him?! He made a dumb mistake ― it’s not like he doesn’t still love her! Even though he knows there’s no defending what he did, he tries, telling her it’s never going to happen again and saying he drank too much the night it happened, like that’s an excuse. He’s mad at himself, and this is one of the few times he raises his voice to his S/O. When she leaves, he immediately follows her in an attempt to salvage things. Of course… she’s moving too fast to see the horses, and the driver of the carriage can’t stop them in time, and Ronald isn’t quick enough to jump in front of her.

He’s knelt next to her the whole time, trying to save her… although he knows there’s no hope once William shows up. He pleads with his boss to let (Name) live, because he loves her, but… William’s already reviewed the case and taken every consideration, and he has to reap her soul. Despite how precious her life is, unfortunately, this time, there’s no way around what has to happen. Ronald stays there for a long while, crumpled on the sidewalk, just holding her body and crying and saying he’s sorry. Eventually he has to get up, go talk to her family and let them know what happened… and get back to work.

Only he doesn’t. He takes personal day after personal day, and is unable to even bring himself to go to the funeral, and everyone who knows him can see it’s the beginning of him going downhill, especially when he starts to drink more heavily. If someone doesn’t intervene, he’s going to drink himself into a second death, and he thinks he would deserve it.
