we can acknowledge that slavery has existed all over the world in different time periods and also acknowledge that race-based slavery in the US has a particular legacy that still affects society today. why is this so hard for conservatives to understand.
#they'll say 'slavery existed in africa pre-transatlantic slave trade!' ok and? that's not a gotcha#if an african country today continues to have inequality due to a legacy of e.g. one ethnic group enslaving another#then obviously that is a problem that exists in their society and that i'm sure activists in that country are trying to remedy#many places around the world have legacies of slavery (as well as currently existing slavery) that differ bc the institution of slavery#has been established in different forms

January 20th this year is MLK Day! Today we remember and honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as a Civil Rights leader and activist. On October 16, 1967, less than 6 months before his assassination, King spoke at the campus stadium at Sacramento State College (now known today as California State University, Sacramento) on the subject of inequalities in education and economic justice for the lower class in the United States in a campaign later called the âPoor Peopleâs Campaign of 1968.â About 6,000 people attended this speech.
For today, Jared discussed MLKâs speech in Sacramento and letterpress printed a quote from MLK in 1963. The quote is, âInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere... Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.â This was typeset in 30 point Caslon font. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852.

Today is my 44th birthday. I was brought to my motherâs arms as Ronald Reagan was being sworn in and then went to the airport to welcome the Iranian hostages homeâa meeting we now know was pre-arranged, as Reaganâs team negotiated to keep the hostages in captivity a little bit longer just so it could be Reagan, as opposed to Carter, who got the credit for releasing them.
Every four years my birthday falls on a US presidential inauguration. Some of those days are good; some are bad; some are terrible. Today is certainly one of the worst.
My birthday also sometimes falls on the day the US honors Martin Luther King, Jr.âor, when it doesnât, always on a day very close to it. I always spend some time on my birthday thinking of him, too. Like all of us, he wasnât perfect, but more and more what I think about regarding his legacy is how some of the things he said have been cherry-picked and stored like prize possessions in jeweled boxes for admiring every so often while the rest has been buried. MLK was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, of income inequality, and of capitalism. Of all things I remember the first time I heard anything by him about that was in college when I happened into a record store in San Francisco and heard one of his speeches (not the âI have a dreamâ speech) remixed in a song.
Often you will hear that you should focus on what you can control. This is true, when it comes to your own personal well beingâyour state of mind. I feel like there should be a balance, though. Sometimes your well being is well enough that you can spare the anguish that comes with worrying about the state of the worldâthe many injustices you canât fix, either by yourself or right away. We need that to push us to actually fix these things, either in small individual ways or collectively, through both direct and indirect action.
Each of us at different times in or livesâor on a micro level, at different times of the week or yearâgoes in and out of phases where we must focus on self-care and phases where we can look outward. Today I hope we can treat ourselves and each other with a little kindness when it comes to recognizing where it is we need to be in a given moment. Looking around on social media, it may seem that some are always onâalways fighting, always pushing for changeâand some are always offâcat memes, shipping, fandom. But thatâs nothing but a small window into a person. First, thatâs simply how that person interacts with one social media platform; itâs not their entire life. Second, it may be that this is the place they come to unwindâor, alternatively, this is the only place in their life where they can share the rage inside of them. Whoever they are, however they are, let them be, and offer them kindness. Itâs going to take all of us to fight back.

genq what are the actual reasons that plagiarism is bad apart from profit and prestige?
so there are two main angles i usually think of here, which ultimately converge into some related issues in public discourse and knowledge production.
firstly, plagiarism should not just be understood as a violation one individual perpetuates against another; it has a larger role in processes of epistemological violence and suppression of certain people's arguments, ideas, and labour. consider the following three examples of plagiarism that is not at all counter to current structures of knowledge production, but rather undergirds them:
in colonial expeditions and encounters from roughly the 14th century onward, a repeated and common practice among european explorer-naturalists was to rely on indigenous people's knowledge of botany, geography, natural history, and so forth, but to then go on to publish this knowledge in their own native tongues (meaning most of the indigenous people they had learned from could not access, read, or respond to such publications), with little, vague, or no attribution to their correspondents, guides, hosts, &c. (many many examples; allison bigelow's 'mining language' discusses this in 16th and 17th century american mining, with a linguistic analysis foregrounded)
throughout the renaissance and early modern period, in contexts where european women were generally not welcome to seek university education, it was nonetheless common practice for men of science to rely on their wives, sisters, and other family members not just to keep house, but also to contribute to their scientific work as research assistants, translators, fund-raisers, &c. attribution practices varied but it is very commonly the case that when (if ever) historians revisit the biographies of famous men of science, they discover women around these men who were actively contributing to their intellectual work, to an extent previously unknown or downplayed (off the top of my head, marie-anne lavoisier; emma darwin; caroline herschel; rosalie lamarck; mileva mariÄ-einstein...)
it is standard practice today for university professors to run labs where their research assistants are grad students and postdocs; to rely on grad students, undergrads, and postdocs to contribute to book projects and papers; and so forth. again, attribution varies, but generally speaking the credit for academic work goes to the faculty member at the head of the project, maybe with a few research assistants credited secondarily, and the rest of the lab / department / project uncredited or vaguely thanked in the acknowledgments.
in all of these cases, you can see how plagiarism is perpetuated by pre-existing inequities and structures of exploitation, and in turn helps perpetuate those structures by continuing to discursively erase the existence of people made socially marginal in the process of knowledge production. so, what's at stake here is more than just the specific individuals whose work has been presented as someone else's discovery (though of course this is unjust already!); it's also the structural factors that make academic and intellectual discourse an ĂŠlite, exclusive activity that most people are barred from participating in. a critique of plagiarism therefore needs to move beyond the idea that a number of wronged individuals ought to be credited for their ideas (though again, they should be) and instead turn to the structures that create positions of epistemological authority under the aegis of capitalist entities: universities, legacy as well as new media outlets, and so forth. the issue here is the positions of prestige themselves, regardless of who holds them; they are, definitionally, not instruments of justice or open discourse.
secondly, there's the effect plagiarism has on public discourse and the dissemination of knowledge. this is an issue because plagiarism by definition obscures the circulation and origin of ideas, as well as a full understanding of the labour process that produces knowledge. you can see in the above examples how the attribution of other people's ideas as your own works to turn you into a mythologised sort of lone genius figure, whose role is now to spread your brilliance unidirectionally to the masses. as a result, the vast majority of people are now doubly shut out of any public discourse or debate, except as passive recipients of articles, posts, &c. you can't trace claims easily, you don't see the vast number of people who actually contribute to any given idea, and this all works to protect the class and professional interests of the select few who do manage to attain ĂŠlite intellectual status, by reinforcing and widening the created gap between expert and layperson (a distinction that, again, tracks heavily along lines of race, gender, and so forth).
so you can see how these two issues really are part of one and the same structural problem, which is knowledge production as a tool of power, and one that both follows from and reinforces existing class hierarchies. in truth, knowledge is usually a collaborative affair (who among us has ever had a truly original idea...) and attributions should be a way of both acknowledging our debts to other people, and creating transparency in our efforts to stake claims and develop ideas. but, as long as there are benefits, both economic and social, to be gained from presenting yourself as an originator of knowledge, people will continue to be incentivised to do this. plagiarism is not an exception or an aberration; it's at best a very predictable outcome of the operating logics of this 'knowledge economy', and at worstâas in the examples aboveâa normal part of how expert knowledge is produced, and its value protected, in a system that is by design inequitable and exclusive.

Legacy or Leverage? ⡠f1 fanfiction
⡠OPENING OF HEAVY ARE THE HANDS CARRYING THE NAME ( F1 Grid x F1 Driver! Senna! OFC )
âââââ NEXT !
in which... the news is out: senna's daughter is joining formula one. people are not happy !
NOT UNLIKE POKER, Formula One is a game where one learns to keep their hand hidden until the start of the season. As teams begin to reveal their cards one by one before the pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, Williams has gone all-in with an unexpected line-up.
While the Russell-Latifi duo remains unchanged, the teamâs âthird wheelâ has caused quite a stir. Isadora Senna, the only daughter of the three-time world champion, has been chosen as the British teamâs reserve driver.
For the first time in 45 years and Lella Lombardi, a woman will enter the F1 World Championship. With this move, will Williams take the pot or bust?Â
While several female figures across all sportsâamongst which Susie Wolffâhave hailed the decision and spoken of a âhistoric eventâ for women's rights, a wave of hostility from the most fervent motorsport fans is washing over Isadora Senna. Many are already questioning her ability to compete in the F1 championship, as well as the role nepotism played in this decision.
It is undeniable that Isadora is her fatherâs daughter, but the resemblance lies less in the iconic name than in her talent on the track. On many occasions, Sennaâs only child has proved herself to be talented behind the wheel, with a track record not unlike that of a Max Verstappen.
ââ SEE ALSO ON PADDOCK PRESS.
"I never had anything handed to me" Isadora Senna denies nepotism allegations
Will Lewis Hamilton break the record and become an eight-time world champion in 2021?
Susie Wolff speaks out against misogyny in motorsports
Becoming the 2009 Karting World Champion at only 15 years old, Isadora Senna went on to win the 2015 GP2 Championship at 21 during her first year in the competitionâafter having faced numerous entry rejections based on her gender.Â
Thus, it would not be surprising to see the prodigy succeed in the big league, just as her father did from 1984 to 1994. But will the opportunity arise ? Forâas a reserve driverâIsadora Senna may not race this season.Â
Already, several women are sceptical about this position, pointing out an only-partial progress. According to renowned feminist journalist Glenna R. Colburn, âit is a way for the FIA to pussyfoot around resolving the burning issue of gender inequality within the motorsports industry.â
âThey're going to milk everything revolving around her appointment and what it means for women, without ever putting her on the track and risking disturbing the established patriarchal order,â she asserts.
So, should we view Sennaâs new status as a real step forward in the world of motorsport or just a woke concession that will ensure both Williams and the FIA positive media attention?

They only put her in because of her fatherâs name. Thatâs a great play on Williams' part but letâs see how long it takes for them to realize sheâs just not cut out for it.

F1 is slowly turning into a joke. Wokeness is destroying everything.
Anonymous 1 hour ago
Great, now theyâll probably start giving her handouts just because sheâs Daddyâs girl. Just wait until sheâs up against real competition. She won't stand a chance.
Anonymous 4 hour ago
Iâd rather see a fresh face in the sport than someone riding off their fatherâs coattails.Â

Writing Prompt: The grave of a 4000-year-old merchant is discovered and once his DNA is analyzed the researchers discover he has a living descendant living in the same city and working as a grocery store owner.
Taking advantage of the situation, the descendant envokes an ancient tablet granting his ancestor "and all of his children and descendants until the end of time" tax exempt status in the city. When the city rejects his petition, he sues them.
The case garners international attention and brings up questions not just of taxation, but also of legacy, history, genetics, economic inequality, and national identity.

I think Werewolf is an inherently queer medium
This is all part of a longer term project
Read our intro comic here
Coming soon:
Book 1: Cliath
In 1992, White Wolf Publishing released the first edition of Werewolf: the Apocalypse to the public. Throughout the 1990s, it rapidly grew to become one of the most played role-playing games of all time, and this persisted well into the noughties when the series concluded with the Revised (3rd) edition.
Its a game that speaks to the core fears many of us hold about the uncertainty of the future. Of corporations harming the world to meet their profit margins, of everyday people whose homes and lives are destroyed by disasters caused by those corporations or by storms that wouldn't have been so severe even a decade before. Of politicians who sell agencies to those who pay them the most to make the most vulnerable groups in society even more vulnerable. Of people who don't even have that. It looks you all in the eyes and asks you to be enraged. It asks you to care while handing you the tools to do something about it. Then, you get to work. You don't just blow up the factories; you empower the little guy, heal communities, and confront the stagnant society that you've become a part of, and you have to be responsible custodians of the greater world around you while not trying to be consumed by the very darkness you fight against. It was as intense as it was touching, heartbreaking, and entertaining. At times its just as absurd (and nuanced) as real life.
It was revolutionary at the time for the space it held at the tabletop. Werewolf was the first tabletop roleplaying game ever made that defaulted to using feminine pronouns in all Player and Storyteller interactions, as well as the default pronouns of the Garou in its first three editions. For its many flaws, it saw itself as the first tabletop roleplaying game that held any space for Indigenous groups. It made activism a core theme of the game itself, and would conclude its books with a list of related real-world demonstrations where the players can get involved in protecting the world around them, just like the werewolves they represent at the tabletop.
The Garou have intricate and multi-layered cultures from their written language to their oral histories, the way they dress, and the ways they manifest across editions were presented with very little overlap when it comes to the multiple facets across their society, leading to a rich history and complex societies for Storytellers to weave chronicles together for their troupes.
Dark Surrealism Awaits
The World of Darkness is implied to exist just beneath a facade that all others take for granted as simply being a world gone wrong. Can you feel it? In a world of burning forests, flash floods, social inequality and seemingly worse things emerging day after day â a world where everything feels wrong and nothing in the world feels right â you are not alone.
The universe is itself a living organism, thrashing like a panicked animal at the biting darkness, and we, the Gaians, are those who join the fight to protect it. You are one of Gaiaâs chosen warriors, about to experience your First Change, and become swept into a world of ancient warriors and sacred purpose.
We monsters ask nothing of youâother than to join us.

It still shocks me that there's apparently a Shou hatedom out there because he was halfway to carrying that show on his goddamn back. He's got wacky little jokes and cute animation. He's got a fraught but compelling dynamic with Jaden (their obvious closeness but also a built-in inequality and insecurity about how Sho needs Jaden a lot more than vice versa). He's got a firm internally-driven character motivation (live up to his brother's legacy) and a want/need internal conflict (what he actually needs, and is slowly working towards, is better self-esteem).
Meanwhile Chazz's arc screeches to halt after season two, Kenzan is flat, Asuka spends half the series brainwashed, and Bastion is so out of focus they made it a plot point. Jaden is better written but frankly very reactive and a little aimless. By comparison Shou Marufuji is literally the best-written and most compelling character in GX! What do you want from him!
#he has agency! he has consistent character traits as well as growth! he's got turmoil!#and therefore is running laps around everyone else!
