Francis Drake Main Story

This is simply a fan translation and is not intended as a replacement for the game. Expect grammatical errors.

This is just a rough translation.

One year later.

Mitsuki: "Well then, I'm off to go shopping."

Sebastian: "Okay. Take care."

Dazai: "Be careful not to trip."

Mitsuki: "Hehe, I'm not a child, you know? But thank you."

Mitsuki returned the residents' smiles and left the dining hall.

Isaac, who was eating, watched her leave with a thoughtful gaze.

Dazai: "What's wrong, Isaac? You seem concerned about Toshiko-san."

Isaac: "It's nothing. I just hope she's okay."

Isaac: "The other day, I saw her gazing at the boat on the Seine River, so I got a little worried."

Dazai & Sebastian: ".........."

The three of them thought about the person she must have been thinking about, a man who lived in the mansion for a while a year ago.

Sebastian: "It looks like she still can't forget about him."

Dazai: "Yeah. They say time heals sadness, but no one can ever truly replace someone."

Mitsuki: "Alright, I didn't forget to buy anything."

I checked the contents of the shopping bag and nodded to myself.

(I finished shopping pretty quickly, and there's not much work at the mansion today, so maybe...)

Before I could even think about it, my feet naturally moved toward a certain place.

Over the past year, I found myself visiting the places that held memories of Drake whenever I had the time.

One was the Seine River, and the other was a room with a domed ceiling and bookshelves. I removed the padlock that hung on the entrance of the building and stepped inside.

(Of course, no one's here.)

The only things present in the room were the light coming in through the window and silence.

This place was apparently his hiding place.

And at the back of the room, that door was still there.

(It still won't open, huh?)

I lightly put my hand on it and pulled, but the door remained motionless.

Over the past year, the door has never been opened. Despite that, Comte decided to manage this place to ensure that the door wouldn't be forced open or misused by someone.

I was given a special key to the building and occasionally came to check on it.

(I'm visiting this place out of nostalgia, but deep down, I'm still hoping he will come back.)

(I can't completely get rid of that faint hope.)

Even after a year, I still love him.

No matter how much I distract myself with other things, he always remains in my heart.

(There's no one else I've loved deeply or who has stirred my heart like he did.)

Whenever I recalled the days we spent together and the events that occurred between us, my feelings for him intensified, never fading.

(Even if I don't say it, everyone in the mansion seems to care.)

(I know it'd be better if I forgot about him, but...)

(I still want to hold on to these precious feelings he gave me.)

Even if someday they sink deep into the sea of my heart and become painful memories, for now, I want to embrace this love.

As if to confirm the presence of those feelings, I pressed the center of my chest tightly. Then, as I turned on my heel, a creaking sound came from behind me.

(Huh...?)

Turning around, I saw the untouched door slowly opening before my eyes.

Mitsuki: "Kyaah!?"

Then, with the sound of wings flapping, something flew out from the gap in the open door.

I followed the afterimage and saw a parrot with bright red wings.

Mitsuki: "Draco!?"

The moment I called his name, someone pulled my body backward.

???: "The woman of destiny."

(No way, it can't be.)

Hearing the whisper up close, I anxiously turned around, and my gaze met his clear, aquamarine eyes.

Drake: "Fawn."

Mitsuki: "Drake?"

There was the person I had always longed to meet.

The person I still love dearly.

Mitsuki: "Drake, Drake!"

I called out his name and embraced him with an uncontrollable impulse.

(Why is he here?)

(Ah, but that doesn't matter anymore.)

Overwhelming joy replaced my surprise and doubt.

Drake: "Mitsuki."

He called my name and wrapped his arm around my back.

Drake: "Ah, damn it. Even though I tried to act cool when we said goodbye, I still find myself longing for you."

The hand that was gently touching me gradually increased its strength and held me tightly.

Surrounded by his warmth, the overflowing, unstoppable emotions turned into tears streaming down my cheeks.

Mitsuki: "I missed you, Drake."

Mitsuki: "I thought I'd never see you again. I thought you had gone to some distant world."

Drake: "I also thought I'd never see you again."

Mitsuki: "Still, you came back."

Drake: "Yeah."

Drake: "It looks like I couldn't hide my true feelings."

He muttered with a faint, bitter smile, and I looked up at him, confused. He then narrowed his eyes and gently wiped my wet cheek with his fingertips.

Drake: "Behind the door, Galileo and I made a bet this time."

------------Flashback-----------

Galileo: "Drake, I'll go on alone from here."

As they used the door to travel through eras, Galileo suddenly stopped in front of Drake.

Galileo: "Don't follow me until you can't see me anymore."

Drake: "Ha? What the hell are you talking about?"

Galileo shrugged off Drake's question and glanced at the hallway lined with antiques.

Galileo: "The destination of this hallway responds to our desires."

Galileo: "If your wishes and mine overlap, we will meet again in one of the worlds."

Drake: "........."

Galileo: "However, if meeting that girl, the woman of destiny, has changed your wish, then the destination you will reach will also be different."

Drake: "So you want to bet on whether I'm seeking the same fate as you based on the destination of this hallway?"

Galileo: "Yeah."

Galileo let out a faint sigh. It sounded like he was already anticipating what was to come.

Galileo: "If our paths differ, then there is no need for a companion anymore."

Galileo: "You can do as you please."

---------Flashback Ends--------

Drake: "So I crossed the hallway alone and arrived here."

Drake: "To where you are."

Mitsuki: "........."

Drake: "I lost the bet. Even though I tried to avoid it to establish boundaries, in the end, I couldn't betray my own desires."

(The door led him to what he wanted.)

His eyes, looking straight at me, conveyed that I was the one.

Drake: "Mitsuki."

He took my hand and put it in the center of his chest.

Drake: "I will never betray the feelings you gave me."

Drake: "Even if we never meet again, I thought that believing in you would be enough."

Drake: "But touching you like this won't work anymore."

He tightly gripped my hand, touching his chest.

Drake: "With this hand, I want to claim you. I want you."

Drake: "I love you, Mitsuki."

Mitsuki: "Drake, me too."

My honest words of love were swallowed by his lips as we exchanged a kiss that I had been waiting for for over a year.

A few days later, in the afternoon, in the mansion's garden:

Napoleon: "It feels good to hang the laundry in a weather like this."

Sebastian: "Thank you for your help. Hanging out and doing chores with you is really a dream come true."

Sebastian savored the moment while spreading the freshly washed sheets.

Napoleon: "You're exaggerating. I don't mind this much."

Napoleon: "Mitsuki had the day off today, right? Did she go out?"

Sebastian: "Yes, she went to see that person. She plans to stay overnight."

Napoleon: "I see."

Napoleon smiled gently, thinking about Mitsuki's recent happy demeanor.

Suddenly, Sebastian muttered a few words beside him.

Sebastian: "The mansion was fun when Drake was here, though I don't think he'll come back anymore."

Napoleon: "…......"

The day Drake reappeared in this world, he visited the mansion with Mitsuki.

------------Flashback-----------

Drake: "No matter what, I can't get along with you guys."

Drake: "However, I won't lay a hand on you anymore."

Drake: "There is still a possibility that your existence will have an impact on the world. So I'll be watching your lives as a vampire, hoping for the possibility of your demise."

With that bold declaration, Drake seemed refreshingly resolute.

Napoleon: "No matter what his thoughts may be, we just have to see that Mitsuki never cries again."

With a determined gaze that wouldn't lose to Drake, Napoleon looked up at the sky.

Above his head was a blue sky as deep as the azure sea.

As the crescent moon rises in the night sky, we exchange words in a planetarium-like place with beautiful lights scattered on the ceiling.

Mitsuki: "Coming back and immediately working on the Seine River is so typical of you."

Drake: "You either earn your own food or steal it."

Drake: "So, how was it to be back on Captain Drake's luxurious cruise ship after a long time?"

Mitsuki: "It was fun, but, as always, your tour-guiding skills suck!"

Drake: "Haha, I'll work on it."

He lightly leaned against the armrest of the sofa, where I sat, and laughed openly. When I quietly sighed in relief, he seemed to notice the subtle change in my demeanor and tilted his head.

Drake: "What's up? You seem oddly relieved."

Mitsuki: "Yeah. I'm just happy that you're by my side."

Mitsuki: "Because you're the kind of person who might set sail on a ship and disappear when I'm not looking."

Drake: "........."

Drake was like a ship that crossed the sea without being fazed by the high waves of a storm.

A person who set sail and navigated through the open sea without the need for any landmarks.

Perhaps, after testing whether I would betray him and experiencing a separation once, that impression became even stronger.

(It's probably just me being anxious, but...)

I lowered my gaze, and he pulled my head gently against his chest.

Mitsuki: “Drake?”

Drake: “This time, I need to make you believe in me.”

His voice echoed gently from the spot where my cheek touched, and my heart raced with excitement.

Drake: “Hey, Fawn. I don’t get along with the folks in the mansion, and I don’t care what happens to this world.”

Drake: “I honestly thought about going through the door again to chase after Galileo since I’m the only one who can accompany him on his journey, but...”

He murmured with a hint of loneliness.

Drake: “When I met you again, I realized I couldn’t live a life I didn’t want.”

(Drake...)

Drake: “So, for me and Galileo, I decided to be the gatekeeper here.”

Mitsuki: “Gatekeeper?”

He deepened his grin like a mischievous child.

Drake: “I’ll prevent anyone who tries to use the door he created and interferes with his journey.”

Drake: “Even though we’re far apart, I could at least do this much.”

Drake: “I betrayed Galileo in the very end. Even though he said he didn’t need me anymore, I will betray his intentions for leaving me behind.”

Mitsuki: “Hehe. Is that your way of getting back at him?”

Drake: “Yeah.”

He narrowed his eyes and chuckled.

(I'm not sure what his relationship with Galileo was like, but I'm sure he was also carrying something that resonated with his despair at the world.)

I wonder if I'll ever meet him again.

Suddenly, he tilted his face and peered into my eyes.

Drake: "That's my conclusion. From now on, I'll be by your side."

Drake: "Believe me a little, little fawn."

As he looked at me, seemingly gauging my mood, a ticklish feeling welled inside me.

Mitsuki: "Yeah, I believe you. I trust you."

(He didn't even believe in himself, but now he's telling me this.)

Drake: "Thanks. I have to live up to your trust."

Returning my smile, he patted my head and climbed down from the armrest, placing his hands on the backrest and pinning me from the front.

Drake: "But be prepared, okay? Because I won't let you go anymore."

Drake: "The next time I leave, I'm taking you with me."

(I really can't compete with him.)

Just when I thought he was showing a boyish smile, he suddenly put on a serious expression, confusing me.

Gently and intensely, just like the waves, he has continued to stir my heart since the day we met.

Mitsuki: "Yeah. Take me away."

Mitsuki: "I want you to take me wherever you go."

Mitsuki: "But, you know? I might be the one to steal you away. The outcome of our bet is still uncertain."

Drake: "----!"

Drake: "Haha, you really know how to catch a pirate's heart."

Intentionally teasing me, he laughed playfully and swiftly stole a kiss from my lips.

Mitsuki: "That's so sneaky!"

Drake: "Sneaky? But that isn't enough."

He drew close to me again and pecked me two to three times.

As the kisses gradually deepened, my chest grew warm and pounded faster.

(I don’t want to be separated from him anymore. I’ll follow him wherever he goes, even to the ends of the sea, even if destruction awaits us there.)

If the world were to crumble, I would face it with Francis by my side.

If the future is filled with hope and connection, then he will be mine.

This is our never-ending gamble, a promise that will never be betrayed.

In between our kisses, he suddenly removed his cape.

Suddenly recalling something, I gently pushed his chest back.

Mitsuki: “Wait, there’s something I’ve been wanting to return to you.”

What I took out of my bag was his golden gun. I had brought it back and kept it with me all this time.

Drake: “Ah, that. It’s fine. You can keep it.”

Mitsuki: “Huh? But...”

Drake: “You’re prone to getting involved in danger, so it’s better for you to have a means to protect yourself.”

Drake: “Well, if anything happens to you, I’ll always come to your rescue.”

His reliable smile gave me an absolute sense of reassurance, making my heart skip a beat.

Mitsuki: “You’re right. I believe that you’ll always come to my rescue, no matter what.”

Mitsuki: "But you might be the most dangerous thing for me."

Drake: "Me?"

Mitsuki: "Yes. Because you're a pirate who is so destructive and could even make my heart pound so hard it could break."

Drake: "Heh? Well then, you better aim for me before it breaks."

Laughing, Francis untied his hair and grabbed my wrist, pointing the gun I held at his own chest.

Drake: "I don't mind getting shot or betrayed by you."

Drake: "I love you enough to feel that way."

(Francis.)

When we first met, I wanted to trust him, so I believed.

When I said I was okay with being betrayed, he shot me with a terribly cold gaze.

But now he was saying the same thing as me.

(Love seemed to surpass the sorrow of betrayal.)

Mitsuki: "I love you too."

Mitsuki: "If I were to shoot your chest, what I'd put in there wouldn't be a bullet, but love."

Drake: "Haha! That sounds perfect!"

His eyes, clear as the sea, which embraced both joy and sorrow, reflected me.

Drake: "If I betray you again, don't hesitate to pull the trigger."

Drake: "I'll die with your bullet in my chest."

Will this love be pierced by betrayal?

I hesitated to believe and suffered from my nearly broken feelings, yet I still couldn't betray him because I ended up falling in love.

(No matter what happens, I will believe in you.)

(And...)

In the love that exists between us, a love that will never be betrayed.

A Look Into My New Guilty Pleasure: Poldark (2015 Series)

My biggest weakness is period dramas — especially period dramas with a talented cast, sweeping romance, terrific scenes (preferably set in some kind of country/provincial side), and lots and lots and lots of just sitting around and talking.

That's probably why Poldark has captured my heart. As a big fan of Outlander, it's no surprise that I fell in love with this show. Outlander and Poldark have so many similarities that I may make a lengthy post about it, but for today, let me just rant about my new guilty pleasure. I'm so obsessed with this show that I actually finished watching the entire five seasons in one week!

Poldark is based on Winston Graham's novels and adapted by Debbie Horsfield. I was so excited to start this show, with a male protagonist originally written by a man, created and written for a series by a woman. I haven't read Graham's novels (I'm going to one of these days, I swear!), so I'm not sure how well Debbie's adaption worked. I've read many Reddit threads, though, and some fans of the novel are not that impressed with how she omitted and added details to the show (will get back to this once I've read the books or at least the seven ones that were used in the show). The show has also been adapted in the 70s, so this was not the first time Graham's novels were seen onscreen!

Despite not having read the books, I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the cast! The show follows Ross Poldark returning to Cornwall after fighting in the American War in the 1780s. He looks forward to marrying his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth but, believing him to be dead, is now engaged to his cousin Francis. He then tries to resurrect his family's mining business and hires a young girl Demelza to be his kitchen maid (whom he eventually marries) while also crossing paths with the villain George Warleggan, a corrupted banker who stops at nothing to ruin Ross's prospects and personal life. As the show progresses, we also meet other characters, including Prudie and Jud, Ross's servants, Verity, Ross's cousin and Francis's sister; Ross's friend Dr. Dwight Enys and his love interest Caroline Penvenen; Sam and Drake Carne, Demelza's brothers, and Morwenna Chynoweth, Drake's love interest.

Yes, this show has a large ensemble cast, and trust me, there always comes a point when you hate or love them. Especially our protagonist Ross Poldark. Ross... is an interesting character. He's terribly, terribly flawed and many times times, I'm so infuriated with him to the point that I want him to suffer. I swear, you cannot go through this series without screaming at Ross. (When that moment came up in Season 2, I swear I had my middle finger ready every time Ross showed up on my screen from then on.)

But my favorite character in the show is Demelza, Ross's wife who started as his kitchen maid. She's the heart of the show, the voice of reason, and even though she makes questionable decisions along the way, you can't help but get on her side no matter what. She's the perfect fiery yet gentle match to Ross's stubbornness. He treats her like shit many times in this show, which makes me angry to no end, but they eventually grow to be understanding, loving partners.

And it also helps that Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson have one of the best romantic chemistries I've ever seen. They're terrific actors as well and they bring the characters to life so effortlessly. They just seem like they have the best time shooting this show. I kind of want to rewatch Loving Vincent now just because they're in that movie, even just in supporting roles.

Poldark is a roller coaster, with so many ups and downs (mostly downs, to be honest, please give Demelza a break!) My favorite season has got to be Season 1. Season 1 had the best Ross and I loved the early stages of his relationship with Demelza. It also has my favorite episode: Season 1, Episode 8. That episode broke me so much, thanks to Aidan and Eleanor's perfect performances. It's the only time I ever cried watching this show. I usually cry in period dramas (I've cried countless times in Outlander and Downton Abbey), but for some reason, I only cried once in Poldark. Most of the time, I'm annoyed and infuriated (hahaha but I still love it!)

The romance in Poldark is also quite unique, something I haven't seen before. Ross and Demelza emotionally hurt each other many times in this show, and they don't have the best communication. It's not an ideal marriage, but that's what makes it so raw and real. It hurts when Ross sleeps with his first love Elizabeth or when Demelza falls for the much-sensitive Hugh Armitage, but these are challenges people face all the time, and it's interesting to view it in characters and circumstances through 18th-century lenses. Plus, it can be very tiring to see perfect couples onscreen all the time. So watching Ross and Demelza's relationship thrive, suffer, and reconcile is very refreshing to me.

Nevertheless, Ross and Demelza are still able to work together. Seasons 2 and 3 showcase the worst moments of their marriage, from infidelities to insecurity, but the love between them still perseveres and they learn to forgive. In the end, they realize that they belong together.

And despite the unconventional marriage, Poldark is not a stranger to grand romantic gestures. Two of my favorite Ross and Demelza moments occur in Season 2:

The romance in Poldark not only ends with Ross and Demelza. We also got two really good couples in the series: Dwight and Caroline and Drake and Morwenna.

And these love stories don't just happen! They're fleshed-out characters with proper backgrounds and their own problems, especially Drake and Morwenna's relationship. Morwenna is one of my favorite characters, and she doesn't deserve all the shit thrown at her. The last season of Poldark is not the best (bordering on bad, actually, especially the last two episodes), but watching Drake and Morwenna get their happy ending is worth it.

Finishing all five seasons is bittersweet. I enjoyed most of the story and fell in love with different characters. I kind of regret watching everything in one week haha. But what can I say? As soon as I finish each episode, I'm so tempted to start another episode. I think the last time I stayed up until 5 AM the next morning to watch TV shows was Yellowjackets. Poldark's just too good to binge! It's one of my favorite TV shows now. Maybe I'll watch Sanditon next...

I want to write more about Poldark soon, maybe a comparison with Outlander or maybe just a post about each character. I realized I hadn't talked much about Elizabeth, Francis, and George in this post; I was too preoccupied with the love story aspects and Ross and Demelza. We'll see!

What are your thoughts on the new characters in ikevam?

Thanks for asking! I am going to put a link to the video in the comments/notes of this post if anyone hasn’t seen these new characters yet.

First thought:

I wish they looked less alike at a distance! To reveal two characters with white hair, white shirts, the same skin, and a general mirroring of hair underwhelms me. We’ve seen their combined palette before. On Mozart. Compared to the existing cast they look washed out— maybe that’s on purpose, theories next paragraph! And this lack of enthusiasm isn’t a quibble with the illustrations, they’re not ugly. Ike-ist of men/vampires. But they are visually bland, and presented together, I don’t find a lot to distinguish these characters from each other until I start looking hard. Until now the IkeVamp character designs have been a lot more visually appealing to me, even on characters that I didn’t end up liking so much. That’s why these feel like a letdown in a way.

There was a design element that definitely unifies them on purpose: the matching harnesses they’re rocking, which have me intrigued. I haven’t played any route in EN since Comte’s, maybe in Vlad’s route some secret society of existing-out-of-the-flow time managers were revealed? purebloods: GROUNDED I can’t make out much beyond shapes, at first I thought their icons were gears but having zoomed, I don’t think so any more. Their belts/cummerbund things are part of the get up, the shoulder piece comes down and attaches to the belt. I LOVE A MAN IN WEIRD UNIFORM. 💕

Identical as far as I can tell, EXCEPT:

Galileo (on the right above) has a pewter lock/safety pin end hanging from his shoulder pin. Drake’s looks to be brass, the same tone as the charm the things hang from.

I’m also not 100% on the hip icons being the same. It could just be the angle but Drake’s doesn’t appear to narrow over the top of the loop like Galileo. In historical significance I tend to think of Galileo as outranking Sir Francis Drake, that could be coloring my guess here. 😂

So, this is Parasite: Reinfected, my friends and I's tabletop game inspired by Parasyte: The Maxim, Tokyo Ghoul, the Prototype games, and Venom. I'll go down the line of our cast in order of appearance-

-Francis 'Fran' Drake (Made by Dreamer, our DM): A 25 year old expolicewoman that's got a personality to match her 6'4 foot frame. She is punk as HELL and sure knows how to RAISE hell. She's a go-getter, level-headed even under immense stress, and acts like a big sister for the group. Also, she'd be the best dancer out of everybody.

-Dane Delos Santos (Made by Me!!): A 20 year old college student, Dane is a bookish but rather scatterbrained guy with a surprisingly short fuse. He's the one in the group that says "uh, guys, I don't think this is a good idea", but inevitably caves to the rest of the group. A bit of a coward, but his heart is typically in the right place until you make him angry.

-[E-10]/Ethan (Made by Jester): A mysterious man that looks around 21. Turns out, he's an escaped lab experiment (he even has a tail!). He doesn't talk much (and when he does he's incredibly blunt), and he may look intense, but he just doesn't know how to talk to people. He's really rather nice.

-Vergil (Made by Boyo): The guitar playing, stargazing ditz that has more than meets the eye. He's fun-loving and just goes with the flow, even in high-stakes situations. He's 19, and doesn't seem to know how to drive....nor does he know what the internet is. Where did this guy come from??

And finally, Bagel (Made by Gold-Hearted Oppossum): Believe it or not, he was once a cat (and still generally takes the form of one), but brutal lab experimentation and having your body inhabited with TWO alien symbiotes can really change a kitty. Soo instead of Garfield, think of GOREfield. However, with all of his sinister power, he's a very chill creature that's warmed up to the rest of the cast, much akin to a regular cat. And just like Garfield, he's always eating to maintain his biomass...just don't let poor Dane see him munching on corpses.

Francis Drake Main Story

This is simply a fan translation and is not intended as a replacement for the game.

This is a rough translation, so expect several inaccuracies and mistakes. I'll add the screenshots later.

After that, the seasons changed, and a year had passed.

Mitsuki: "Phew, what do you think, Mozart?"

Jean: "Are you satisfied with how it turned out?"

Mozart: "Hmm."

Mozart smiled at Jean and looked around the beautifully polished music room.

Mozart: "It looks like you cleaned every detail meticulously. Not bad."

Mozart: "I appreciate your help. Thank you, Jean, Mitsuki."

Mitsuki: "Hehe, yay! It's nice to be praised by a clean freak like you, Mozart."

Mitsuki: "Well then, I'll go clean the other rooms."

Carrying the cleaning tools, Mitsuki left the music room with a smile.

Jean: "........."

Mozart: "Jean, is something wrong?"

Jean: "Mitsuki still occasionally cleans Drake's room, right? I wonder if, deep down, she's still waiting for him to return."

Mozart: "Could be."

As the two contemplated, Shakespeare appeared.

Shakespeare: "A year has passed since then. Sir Drake was quite the stormy character."

Shakespeare: "He was like the Flying Dutchman, endlessly sailing while wishing for destruction."

Shakespeare: "Forgive me for overhearing your conversation."

Jean: "What's this 'Flying Dutchman' you’re talking about?"

Mozart: "It's a ghost ship legend among sailors. There are operas based on it."

Mozart lightly recounted the story, and Jean nodded slightly, perhaps reminiscing about a year ago.

Jean: "I see. It's just like him to leave after causing a commotion."

Shakespeare: "In opera, the Dutchman sailed alone, and the maiden threw herself into the sea to show her love."

Mozart: "Shakespeare. You're not wishing for Mitsuki to have a tragic story like that, are you?"

Shakespeare: "Of course not. But it was a bit insensitive to compare them."

Shakespeare: "Will Mitsuki's story return to normal, or is there still a climax waiting ahead in the future?"

(The cleaning was finished in no time.)

The room, which will probably never be used again, was always tidy because I occasionally cleaned it.

I sat on the bed, lost in thought.

(A year has passed since then.)

My life returned to normal after Drake disappeared.

The only thing that changed was that Karen later started working in a nearby store. They hired her because they were short-staffed, even though she's just a child.

Karen: "They treat me like family."

Mitsuki: "I'm glad you found someone you can rely on."

Mitsuki: "If you ever need help, just let me know."

Karen: "Thank you, sis. I won't do anything bad anymore. I won't lie or break promises. I'll live a proper life so that people can trust me."

She said that and smiled.

I still frequently ran into her as she moved on with her life.

While thinking of her, I suddenly look back at myself.

(The people in the mansion aren't saying anything, but I'm sure they're worried about me.)

(Karen is taking a new step forward, but I...)

I'd been standing still because I didn't want to forget my love for Drake.

(Drake still has my heart.)

In loving him, I experienced sparkling excitement, sadness, and even pain that could shatter a heart.

Through the suffering of love, I found the strength to believe.

No other love has ever hit me with such full force.

Maybe I stepped into this room to retrace those marks left by that love, but...

(This love will never start again.)

(I have to keep these feelings in my heart and live without Drake.)

In that way, I would be able to step into the future without causing worry to everyone. However, I feel like I am betraying both my feelings and Drake.

Drake: "If it's really important, even if you're apart and even if you can't meet, those feelings won't change and will remain just as strong."

Drake: "You should be proud that you have many important and irreplaceable things."

Even now, his words and smile still reach me.

I will keep my feelings for you in my heart.

Mitsuki: "I won't betray this love."

A few days later, I remembered what Drake had said when I came to the Seine River.

Drake: "I just had an idea. Why don't we throw some bottled messages in the ocean next time?"

Mitsuki: "A message in a bottle? The one where you put a letter in a bottle and throw it into the ocean?"

I smiled back at Drake in my memory and took a bottle from my bag.

(Even though this isn't the sea, this place is the most memorable one for me.)

Inside the clear bottle was a letter I wrote to Drake.

(Even if we never see each other again, I hope my unchanging love will reach you someday.)

As I was about to throw the bottle with my endless wish—

???: "Heh, a message in a bottle? I've received something similar before."

(Huh?)

Someone smoothly snatched the bottle from my hand and chuckled.

Startled by the familiar voice, I turned around in disbelief.

Drake: "Look, a palm-sized ocean given to me by a cute little fawn. Beautiful, isn't it?"

Mitsuki: "Drake!"

Drake was smiling as he held the letter and bottle I had given him.

Mitsuki: "Drake? Is that really you?"

Drake: "Haha! The one and only Captain Drake."

Drake: "Believe me, Mitsuki."

Mitsuki: ".........."

Happiness and the desire to meet again flooded over me, and I jumped into his arms.

Mitsuki: "I believe you, I believe you. It's really you!"

Mitsuki: "I've wanted to see you for so long."

Drake: "Yeah, me too, fawn."

When I raised my head, beyond my teary vision, Drake's aquamarine eyes reflected me.

The longing that had filled my chest was replaced by an overwhelming sense of happiness, and my world lit up again.

Mitsuki: "I never thought you would come back."

Drake: "Ah, about that..."

Drake: "Well, I was left behind in a stupid way."

Galileo: "It looks like you found a place to stay other than this trip."

Galileo: "I'm going on ahead alone. You can dream for a while until I destroy this world."

Galileo: "Francis Drake, the pirate who moved the world. If you want something, steal it."

After leaving through that door a year ago, Drake and Galileo seemed to have continued their journey. However, after returning to their hideout, Galileo left Drake behind and closed that heavy door.

(Galileo brought Drake back?)

Drake: "It's a bit annoying to be set up like that, but I didn't back down."

Drake: "Pirates take everything they want. That's what we do."

Drake: "That's why it wasn't like me to not lay a hand on the most wanted treasure."

Drake lightly shrugged his shoulders and cupped my face, looking at me with intense, piercing eyes.

Drake: "You're the one I want the most. I want to obtain you as much as I want to destroy the world. You're my ultimate desire."

Drake: "That’s why I came to steal you."

Mitsuki: "Drake."

Drake: "I love you, Mitsuki."

(Ah, I can't resist him anymore.)

Even though he left behind this love in me, he appeared again and stirred my heart.

I love him, even though he's cruel.

Mitsuki: "Yeah, steal me, Drake. I love you too."

(I could finally express the words I never had someone to tell.)

(To Drake...)

Drake: "Mitsuki."

His face slowly moved closer to mine, and our lips touched, overflowing with emotions beyond words.

I hugged Drake's chest again, and his arms embraced me in return with a force that felt like I might truly be taken away.

Drake: "By the way, little fawn. Who is this message in a bottle for?"

Mitsuki: "Fufu. Well, he already received it."

Mitsuki: "To my beloved pirate, the only one in the endless sea."

With my luggage in my arms, I turned around at the gate and looked at the mansion.

Parting is always bittersweet, so I decided to bid farewell at the entrance.

(I came to the mansion from the Louvre Museum in the 21st century and met everyone.)

(I'm here right now, thanks to everyone's support.)

I cannot thank each and every one of them enough for understanding my feelings and decisions.

(Okay, Mitsuki, don't cry.)

I blinked my eyes to stop the tears and put on a smile.

Mitsuki: "I'm off."

With these words, I bid farewell to the many memories I had made here and turned my back on the mansion.

Then, before I knew it, the person of my chosen destiny stood before me.

Drake: "I'm here to pick you up, Fawn."

Mitsuki: "Drake."

Drake: "Did you forget something at the mansion? Anything unfinished or left undone?"

Mitsuki: "I'm fine. I'm just feeling a little sad."

Drake: "That's understandable."

Drake: "Should I give you a hug? Don't worry, I'll take care of you in their place."

Mitsuki: "I'll pass for now."

Drake: "You sure? Well, maybe later then."

(He says such things so casually.)

I took a deep breath and quietly suppressed my racing heart.

He looked at me for a moment and then extended his hand, just like before.

Drake: "Miss, how about a boat date with me before we leave?"

Drake's boat glided gracefully along the beautiful Seine River.

I couldn't help but gaze at him as the wind mischievously tousled his tied-up hair.

Drake: "Honestly, I thought you might hesitate about betraying everyone in the mansion."

Mitsuki: "The old me might have felt that."

Drake: "But..."

(He's hesitating.)

Mitsuki: "You're concerned about leaving Galileo alone, aren't you?"

Drake: "..........."

Drake: "Man, you're pretty sharp."

Drake looked slightly embarrassed and sighed.

Drake: "Galileo's got his own thoughts, and he left me behind."

Drake: "Thanks to that, I reunited with you. But it's not a fair deal if I'm the only one benefiting."

He lowered his gaze for a moment before looking at me directly.

Feeling a bit nervous, I returned his gaze.

Drake: "I don't want to owe anyone anything. If someone does something to me, I'll do it back to them."

Drake: "Pirates get everything they want; that's our way of life."

(Yeah, that's who you are.)

He was the kind of person who would boldly set sail into the endless sea.

Drake: "I said I'd go with him on his journey, and now I've betrayed him."

Drake: "I'm planning to go against Galileo's intentions and chase after him through that door."

Mitsuki: "Okay."

Drake: "And you, Mitsuki. You're coming with me."

(Huh?)

I stopped thinking for a moment after hearing the exact opposite of what I was prepared to hear.

(Is he saying he won't let me go?)

I stared at him blankly, and Drake, who had a faint smile on his lips, quickly turned serious again.

Drake: "What Galileo and I are doing—our desires—might contradict the hopes you believe in, but..."

Drake: "Even if you say you don't want to, I'll still take you away."

Drake: "A year apart was enough to make me ache with longing. I don't want to let you go anymore."

Drake: "You can blame me if you want. Just think that being loved by me is the end of your luck, and let yourself be stolen."

(Drake...)

I couldn't simply be happy with the fact that he wanted me.

(If Galileo, like Drake, has time-traveled with despair in his heart, then the two of them may be plotting something that will drastically change the future of this world.)

If that happens, what will I do?

Mitsuki: "I'll go with you. I'll follow you wherever you go."

Drake: "Mitsuki."

Mitsuki: "And I'll see with my own eyes what the two of you are thinking and what you're trying to do."

Mitsuki: "I'll choose the path I believe in."

(I might end up facing Drake again at that time.)

(Still, by confronting him head-on, I will uphold my feelings for him.)

A love without lies or deception.

Drake: "Ah, as expected."

Mitsuki: "As expected?"

Drake: "You're still going to chase after me."

Drake: "I believed you would say that, Mitsuki."

(Believed me?)

Drake's word "believe" resonated in my heart as strongly as the words "I love you."

He smiled at me defiantly, almost provocatively.

Drake: "Mitsuki, shall we continue the bet from that day?"

Mitsuki: "Sure."

I nodded without hesitation anymore.

Drake: "What are you thinking, Fawn?"

Mitsuki: "Huh?"

Drake: "You were looking a bit distant."

Mitsuki: "I was just thinking about when I decided to go with you and our endless journey."

Mitsuki: "And also the outcome of our bet."

At the end of this journey, we might see countless futures of destruction, but among them, we might find even just one hopeful future.

(Even if we don't know what the outcome will be, this bet is a promise that we will be together forever.)

Holding onto the promise of no betrayal, I smiled and looked at him.

Then he squinted his eyes as if reflecting my feelings in a mirror.

Drake: "Hey, Mitsuki."

Mitsuki: "Yeah?"

Drake: "In our bet, I wish for the world to be destroyed, but..."

Drake: "I'm starting to think it wouldn't be so bad if you won."

(Does that mean...?)

Even Drake, who once wished for despair and the world's destruction, is showing a glimmer of hope.

Mitsuki: "Yeah. Even if I win, I'm sure there's a future you'll like waiting for you."

Drake: "I hope so."

In the depths of Drake's heart, there is still a dark, frozen sea.

(I will continue to shine the light by your side.)

Until the end of our never-ending journey.

Drake: "Hey, but that doesn't mean I'll give up halfway, okay?"

Mitsuki: "Hehe, I know. Both the bet and the journey are far from over."

Mitsuki: "So, will you steal me all the way to the ends of the sea, Mr. Pirate?"

Drake: "----!"

Drake: "Ah, geez, if you're going to say such cute things out of the blue, then I'll have to retaliate."

Mitsuki: "Huh? Kyaa!"

Just as I thought he was only putting a hat on me, I felt my body lift as the boat rocked.

Draco: "Captain! Heave-ho! Heave-ho!"

Draco, flying in from somewhere, chirped overhead as if cheering.

With me on his lap, Drake flashed a mischievous smile.

Drake: "Yes, Your Majesty. As you wish, I will steal you to the ends of the earth."

Drake: "You're the woman of my destiny. The greatest treasure I found while I was wandering endlessly."

Drake's eyes shone like a clear sea filled with radiance.

At this moment, there was no shadow of a despairing sailor, only eternal love.

Mitsuki: "I will follow you from now until forever. No matter what happens, I won't betray you."

Drake: "Yeah, I believe you won't betray me."

Drake: "You make me believe that."

Drake: "I love you. Even if the world falls apart someday, I want to see the future you believe in."

Mitsuki: "Hehe, isn't that contradictory?"

Drake: "Yeah."

We playfully touched noses and laughed together.

Drake: "Well then, shall we go? To the beginning of our grand voyage."

Nobody knows what lies ahead on this journey.

Still, I'll go anywhere as long as it's with you.

I tried to make it progress from Richard judging more harshly to being more understanding. Commentary below the cut! CW for some discussion of OD and suicide, motor accidents, WW2 resistance and concentration camps, and the Troubles.

1) Kate Bush - Mother Stands for Comfort Richard thinking of Sybilla's devotion to Francis even after all he's done: Mother stands for comfort / Mother will hide the murderer / Mother hides the madman / Mother will stay mum... 2) Fairport Convention - Reynardine All of Richard's worst fears about Francis: a 'sly, bold' rake, out to lead women astray under the guise of protecting his own dubious lifestyle: Her hair was black, her eyes / Were blue, her lips as red as wine / And he smiled to gaze upon her / Did that sly, bold Reynardine. 3) Nick Drake - Fruit Tree Richard's a bit of an ass, sure, but he's not going to miss parallels between his little brother and Nick Drake, framed as a suicidal genius who died of an overdose of anti-depressants partly in the belief that his music would only be discovered after his death (which is both reading a lot into this one song, and also the kind of self-fulfilling prophecy the music industry loves but it's all bullshit lads and Nick's friends and family have given different interpretations): Safe in the womb / Of an everlasting night / You'll find the darkness can / Give the brightest light / Safe in your place deep in the earth / That’s when they’ll know what you were really worth. 4) Yusuf/Cat Stevens - Father & Son Ignoring the title, the words 'father' and 'son' aren't actually used at all in the lyrics. Shiftin' on his mind / Is like drinking funky wine / By the river / Chippin' on his mind / Is like drinking funky wine / By the river 6) Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer I think this may just be a song I apply to a lot of my blorbos, but it really did give me Francis feels off the scale. Anyway I want Richard to hear this on the radio after he's punched Francis in RC and to FEEL BAD. In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade / And he carries the reminders / Of every glove that laid him down or cut him / 'Til he cried out in his anger and his shame / "I am leaving, I am leaving", but the fighter still remains 7) The Clash - Death or Glory An older man again looking back at what he considers the folly of youth, bitter about the industry and the way it markets people and encourages fatalistic behaviour: In every gimmick hungry yob diggin' gold from rock 'n' roll / Grabs the mic and tell us he'll die before he's sold / But I believe in this and it's been tested by research / He who fucks nuns will later join the church / Death or glory becomes just another story... 8) U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday Genuinely annoyed by how GOOD this is, I've spent my life hating U2 lads, what to do, what to do! Anyway, Richard likes it because it's an Irish voice calling for peace and moderation in the context of the Troubles (yes, he's side-eyeing Francis and those old rumours). He's not above seeing its applicability to his own family, either: And the battle's just begun / There's many lost, but tell me, who has won? / The trench is dug within our hearts / And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart... 9) The Proclaimers - What Do You Do BIG Richard album this one, largely for him and Mariotta, but this one's for his political side and probably for straw man arguments he has in his head with Francis, assuming Francis would rather go for direct action than democracy: What do you do / When democracy fails you / What do you do / When the rest can't see its true? / Pat votes the Scots way / Just like her mother / But South always takes all / Just like her brother... 10) Bruce Springsteen - Highway Patrolman Brothers sticking by brothers despite one being a cop and the other committing a crime. :') Recognising that his brother Frankie has maybe been a bit messed up by his experiences and finding he doesn't have it in him to be the arbiter of justice: Me and Frankie laughing and drinking / Nothing feels better than blood on blood / Taking turns dancing with Maria / As the band played "Night of the Johnstown Flood" / I catch him when he's straying / Like any brother would / A man turns his back on his family / Well, he just ain't no good. 11) David Bowie - Space Oddity Richard's memories of watching the moon landing with his siblings, the fact it's impossible not to associate his brother with Bowie (his idol), and watching him soar away while knowing there's nothing much Richard can do for him anymore... This is Ground Control to Major Tom / You've really made the grade / And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear / Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare / This is Major Tom to Ground Control / I'm stepping through the door / And I'm floating in a most peculiar way / And the stars look very different today... 12) Fairport Convention - Percy's Song Dylan but better because it's not Dylan take one: this is a much-covered song about a man jailed for life for being at the wheel during a road accident that killed four people. I think even in CM Richard's view of Francis' 'crimes' is tempered by the idea that family should get to judge him first and foremost. And the moral tangle of this one - there's a sentence to be served, but not like that, not that long! - is something I think would get to Richard, despite his worst assumptions. But, I knew him as good as I'm knowing myself / Turn, turn, turn again / And he wouldn't harm a life that belonged to someone else / Turn, turn to the rain and the wind... 13) Joan Baez - The Altar Boy and the Thief Ah yes, now we're really getting into later CM where Richard is worried and sad rather than just overtly judgey and angry. He's trying to understand Francis, and probably starting to see (through the Tories campaigning for Section 28) that a lot of the public charges levelled against Francis come from a place of bigotry and hate, not justice. Richard is probably not sure of band AU Francis’ actual sexuality (bi) until right at the end, either. At night in the safety of shadows and numbers Seeking some turf on which nothing encumbers The buying and selling of casual looks Stuff that gets printed in x-rated books Your mother might have tried to understand When you were hardly your daddy's little man And you gave up saluting the chief To find yourself some relief

Finely plucked eyebrows and skin of satin Smiling seductive and endlessly Latin Olympic body on dancing feet Perfume thickening the air like heat A transient star of gay bar fame You quit your job and changed your name And you're nearly beyond belief As you hunt down a little relief 14)  Christine Sevres - Robert le Diable The song is titled after a medieval epic poem in which a woman who can't conceive with her husband and whom god won't help has sex with the devil instead, and the son is the cursed Robert le Diable - he's accomplished but clearly a wrong'un until he discovers religious asceticism, and lives as a dog/madman in the Holy Roman Emperor's household. He eventually goes to war against the heathen for the princess (iirc), gets stabbed in the junk and is sanctified (iirc??). The song isn't about him though! The song is actually a poem by Louis Aragon about his fellow poet Robert Desnos. Desnos was a surrealist and a member of the resistance in WW2, and he was captured and imprisoned in concentration camps, where he died of typhoid. People told stories of his whimsy and imagination saving lives - in the AU he's a link to the Crawfords' French background and to Sybilla and FRC's time in the resistance. This is just about Richard learning to see Francis in a clearer light by the end of CM: You have always been so good to me / And though you didn't always talk to me / There wasn't much my loving eyes could not see / And I don't believe you need all your misery. 16) Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure I think the brothers would get a lot from singing this one together :') Generally acknowledging the pressure in both their lives that has gotten in the way of mutual understanding: It's the terror of knowing what this world is about / Watching some good friends screaming, "Let me out!" / Pray tomorrow gets me higher / Pressure on people, people on streets... 17) Joan Baez - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue @stripedroseandsketchpads is a star for recommending I shift from looking for inspiration from Dylan to looking to Joan instead <3 This is another Dylan song that I don't want to hear him sing. Apparently the theory is that Dylan wrote it about himself and connected it with his turn away from acoustic folk music to plugged-in guitar music. Was wondering what you think are the most egregious departures from the book that the series made, not including S5, because that entire thing was egregious. Thanks!

Hi there,

I understand that there is creative licence for adaptions. I do enjoy the television show on this basis. However in terms of the most egregious deviations from the original story I would list 4 main ones to me as follows.

The storyline suggestive of Elizabeth being coerced or heavily influenced to marry Francis by her mother. I think this because it provided a false footing and foundation for the whole story which changes the essence of the real story quite significantly. The decision to do this made the television story one of a potentially (true?) love story of star crossed lovers denied the chance to live out their love. Not through their own choice (or just Elizabeth’s) but because of external circumstances. That is actually a story that belongs to Morwenna and Cuby in respect of Drake and Jeremy in the later books. Those were women who were truly denied their own choice due to the very explicit opposition of family as written into the story clearly by Winston Graham. It was the sole reason for the resistance by both women in giving themselves to their suitors initially. The false narrative for Elizabeth rejecting Ross builds in an unfairness, not just to Ross but also to Elizabeth. It is my view that in the original story Elizabeth made the decision to marry Francis because she did not love Ross at all or enough, while feeling that she loved Francis (better) as the man he was when they began a courtship and still when Ross had returned. The reader of the books can and should then assess Elizabeth as a person who made that decision with her own agency and only later came to ‘change her mind' back to Ross. However the television show makes her a victim of someone else's choice for her so that she too was robbed like Ross was of being with the one that she truly wanted to marry at the time had she not been explicitly prevented. It creates an even sadder story for her and an untold love story for her and Ross because it was then her mother and then Demelza that got in the way of their love rather than this being self inflicted. It also suggests that Ross and Demelza only became a great love by default rather than because Elizabeth blocked it as her love was not true or strong enough.

The night of 9th May 1793 with Ross and Elizabeth being made so overtly and immediately a consensual affair. As well as their interactions in the aftermath. The morning after scene gave the impression of a romantic loving night which contradicts Ross's post incident guilty thoughts in the original book story that he treated her badly that night. It also contradicts Elizabeth's book thoughts which are predominantly negative of her being treated violently and dishonourably by Ross. That is along with her accusation to him that he was a 'bully' to her that night. Obviously this is significant because it was a major incident in the story and the scripters decision to go beyond what Winston Graham showed and put what happened in the unwritten part of the book for that night clearly on one side of a fence rather than 'on the fence', changes how we viewers understand their relationship going forward. It can also minimise what was probably a more serious incident by turning it to pent up and unleashed sex between two consenting old flames and Ross consciously and wilfully cheating on Demelza, instead of a serious act by Ross when he was quite out of his mind and so out of character to the extent that even he later thought it was 'unexplainable'. As I see it that is as it was in the original story.

The fractured relationship between Ross and Demelza from the start of Season 3. Just like Season 1 starting with the false foundation of Elizabeth not wanting to marry Francis this narrative is another one which starts in very wrong footing. It covers Black moon which is the opener to the second set of books and which documents the wonderful rebirth of the Ross and Demelza's relationship. That reflected that the 9th May incident was really a defining moment which thankfully ended up dispensing with the spectre of Elizabeth in their relationship as a romantic threat and instead brought Ross to a newer more reinforced understanding that as Winston Graham said 'it was his wife he really loved'. Graham wrote in the opening pages of that book that 'The warmth of their reconciliation had been full of passion, had brought them closer in some ways than they had ever been before, all defences down.' Instead for the television show and for so many episodes Ross and Demelza were agitated and unromantic with each other. Viewers were denied seeing the passionate re-setting of their relationship as the positive after effect of 9th May and also that this period of even greater love was supposed to be a stark contrast to the out of the blue estrangement they went through after Demelza's affair with Hugh. Their happiness in the year and half beforehand had actually added to Ross's shock and hurt. As a result the show therefore created a new narrative that almost justified Demelza's affair for differing reasons than the book gave. Such a revenge against an inattentive husband.

The ongoing friendship with Ross and Elizabeth post that May night and Ross's interest and connection with Valentine which was built on in season 5. Season 4 did have scenes between Ross and Elizabeth that Elizabeth in the book who feared and lived on a knife edge over George's suspicions about Valentine would have resolutely avoided. They did not resume a warm supportive friendship in the original story yet in the series she dared to visit Ross alone in his London residence in order to seek counsel about Geoffrey Charles's reckless behaviour and he visited her at Trenwith while George was out (just missing his return). Ross also spoke briefly with Valentine, looking and saluting at him almost affectionately and as if embracing that he was or might be his father. I believe the scripter was trying to build a narrative of their connection as father and son and Ross being okay with this. Again these cosy scenes supported the idea that Valentine was conceived that May night in a less hostile scenario of consensual affectionate lovemaking, rather than in a more disagreeable, brutish and uninviting manner. Also the narrative for the last set of books was that Ross was very cagey and reluctant about his connection with Valentine. He did not want to acknowledge it. It was a new shadow on his life connected to Elizabeth that he tried to ignore and he certainly did not wish to develop a father son relationship until he was coerced into something near to this in the penultimate book. This was only because Valentine was out of control and this had unearthed Ross's guilty feelings and a desire to take some accountability. Again starting to build a warm connection between Ross and Valentine at this season 4 stage counters a very important narrative with runs through the later set of books of Ross not facing the consequences of his actions until he has to face what he had turned his back on for years, but almost by force. This of course is partly out of respect for Demelza and so the cosy scenes and feelings towards his illegitimate son so soon after his unfaithfulness also undermine his relationship and reconciliation with Demelza compared against the original story where he avoided Elizabeth for years and wanted to ‘forget’ about her and George.

Hector: His shenanigans in Okeanos were great and I love his brief scene passing the torch to Mandricardo, but I have to admit his dialogue where he's trolling Achilles by throwing shit at him and running is the funniest fucking thing they could possibly do.

Drake: Her speech at the end of Okeanos for sure, but also her just chugging rum out of a holy grail is legendary behavior. Also her bullying the fuck out of Shinji in Extra.

Enkidu: LISTEN THE FACT THEY YEETED A PIECE OF GUGALANNA AT ISHTAR'S FACE IS THE BEST SHIT I HAVE EVER HEARD. But also, their battle with Gil in FSF is so incredible, and their telling Gil's story to Hakuno in CCC as well.

Drake: She and my Fujimaru absolutely fucked at least once. FWB relationship. They're party buddies. There's no romantic strings attached whatsoever but Drake thinks she's sweet and will comfort Fujimaru if she needs it.

Enkidu: They like vibing with the nature spirits in Chaldea, it's nice. I saw a comic about Enkidu using their transformation skill to be bigger than Gil just to bully him, and yes I love that.
