ARC Review: A Rival Most Vial by R. K. Ashwick

I received a free copy of this book from the author (@ashen-crest) and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. However, I now have a paperback copy on order because Holy Sh-- this was so good!!

R. K. Ashwick made herself comfortable on my list of favourite authors after her debut novel, 'The Stray Spirit'. There's a freshness to her authorial voice that makes her books an utter delight to read, and time slips away from me the moment I start the first page.

With 'A Rival Most Vial' she's cemented her spot in my top ten favourite authors. I didn't anticipate buying any paperbacks this year, I've got bills and a holiday to save for, but I simply had to shuffle around some finances to add this one to my shelf.

The rivalry between Ambrose and Eli is perfectly balanced. It doesn't cross into anything groan-worthy, and I didn't get second-hand embarrassment for either of them, which is a common reason romance-rivalry's aren't commonly a favourite trope of mine.

But, as usual, Ashwick had me falling in love with all her characters. Ambrose and Eli, of course, but also all the other members of Rosemond street. Dawn is a delight, Tom's freaking adorable, Sherry's brilliant and Banneker is a laugh, but besides the main characters, Grim's quiet protectiveness might be my favourite.

I don't know what else to tell you without giving away spoilers, because this plot was so perfectly woven together that every element I want to gush about, leads to another that I want you to read and discover on your own.

All in all, I adored this read. It's my first paperback purchase of the year; potentially my only paperback purchase of the year, and another of Ashwick's wonderful stories to add to my collection.

Yeah I do think they're still together. And yeah they do spend a lot of time apart. I think people need to understand that your idea of a relationship is not everyone's idea of a relationship, if that makes sense. Harry and Louis are in a very unique situation where they've gone from working together/being together every single day to having separate careers that demand them to be in a million different places all on top of the fact that they are not publicly together. I think it probably took them quite a while after 1d to figure out what works for them and I think it's completely possible that they did take some time apart after the band. They had a lot to figure out both personally and professionally.

I think over the years they've probably worked to realize what's important to them personally as individuals, as artists, and as partners and they have probably come to terms with the fact that there may be times where the don't see each other for weeks or months at a time. And that's okay. That might not be what many view as a "normal" relationship which is why I think people tend to get worked up. But every relationship is unique and like I said their situation is also unique.

Harry's mentioned reading books such as the Course of Love by Alain de Botton which is essentially about learning and exploring how love can be maintained in long term relationships. I think making their relationship work in whatever capacity they can is extremely important to them and something they've consistently put a lot of thought and effort into.

During a show last year when Harry asked a fan "Are you kind to each other? Do you love each other? Do you look after each other? Do you protect each others solitude? Are you friends to each other? Through thick and thin?" To me, those things all seem like things Harry (and Louis) highly value in their relationship. And the thing that stuck out to me, of course, was "do you protect each other's solitude?" which I assume he gets from the Rilke quote "the highest form of love is to be the protector of another person's solitude." I think this really goes hand in hand with the fact that they do require time apart, time alone etc. for themselves career wise and personally. I also believe they are both incredibly supportive of each other's careers which means understanding and respecting everything (time, travel, publicity etc.) that they have to put into their careers.

So all of this is to say yes, I do think they're still together. And yes, you're correct, they do spend a lot of time apart and that's okay. Their relationship isn't going to look like your "average" relationship.

But part of it I feel is just.. basic manners? Right? Its heartbreaking to me that just asking to do that stuff beforehand is not the norm. I wouldn't want people do draw/use my stuff without asking, so why should I do that to others?

Even if I see on their blog someone surprised them with fanart and they were over the moon about it. I'd still ask. Its their stuff, I should ask. The answer could be no, you never know! Just be decent and ask first.

Rescue pt.2

Part one

Warm, soft light emanated from the crystals interred within the stones, and, as they walked further into the caverns, its glow grew colourful, shades, luminosity gained as if made on purpose, as if done with someone in mind, an outsider, of course, beasts need not the aid of light to move through their homes.

It was thoughtful, Other Hero thought, before procuring the rest of the way to be clean of such thoughts.

The entrances had little privacy to them, then again, in a place of rocks, crystals and stones, commodities wood brought, as doors were rare, rather opting for curtains, wool certainly stole from the merchants who dared pass too close to their caves.

Long was the way before the monster stopped. Opening with one arm the green bed sheets hanging by the rock on the edge, a wide, luminous room presented themselves behind it.

Something resembled a bed right in the middle of the room, nest-like with furs and cushions inside a hole made in the ground, around it decorations seemed carefully planned, a mirror and a table, clothes hung at one of the edges of the room, books piled up against two walls, and, with a panfñute between their hands…

“Hero!” Other Hero shouted, leaping forward to embrace the other the moment they crossed the threshold, arms tight and heart pounding.

They were so relieved.

Hero hugged them back, pressing their cheek in the other’s chest and breathing in.

“Hero, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know where you were,” Other Hero was quickly to apologise, tongue fast as they spoke, little effort to breathe “no one told me anything when I returned, I came as soon as I blackmailed it out of Teammate, I swear, I’m so sorry.”

The hug was tightened by the other, a reassurance, a promise of forgiveness both thought.

Other Hero could almost forget, in the comfort they found in the other’s presence, how the golden eyes of the monster were set right over both.

“I’m very happy you came for me, Other Hero,” Hero answered, finally pulling away from the hug “I’m sure you must be tired.”

They could not deny it, and still, whatever offer could come along with such observation, Other Hero felt hesitant to accept.

But Hero placed their hand in their face, soft and understanding, ignoring the sweat and the grime covering them, wiping away the dust in their cheek, and Other Hero melted.

“Allow us to host you for the night,” they said “allow me to repay your kindness.”

And without second complaint, Other Hero was lowered under the furs by the gentle hands of Hero, under the watchful eye of The King.

The moment to flee would come, they assured themselves, Hero was smart, they were resourceful, they planned ahead. Other Hero would play along if Hero thought that was the path to escaping.

Hero served the soup from the pot into three wooden bowls, one bigger than the other two, and set them on a silver tray.

“I do want to keep them,” they said, eyes fixed on the fire.

The monster, the King, Villain, hugged them from behind as they both watched the put bubble.

“They will not like that.”

“I know,” Hero answered, easily, “but you’ll help me, won’t you? Ease them, help them adapt.”

“I will if such you ask, my light.”

Villain nuzzled into Hero’s neck.

Fed and bathed Other Hero felt dazed in the softness of the nest, only half noticing the other figure slipping in beside them.

Soft hands pulled them close.

“Hero,” they called, almost nothing more than a breath.

“Yes, love?”

“I’ll get us out of here,” Other Hero said, promised “I’ll take you away and we can…”

Their thoughts slipped, came and went as the crackling fire and the humming Hero lulled them to sleep.

A kiss was placed on their forehead, and from the door, Villain smiled at both.

Mort's love for feet is so extreme that, while sleeping, he can rip down a tree to get to them (BRO WHAT????)

Mort is protected by a "force field" of ignorance and can't feel pain, but he still hates drowning, as seen in "Assault and Batteries." (WHAT THE FUCK IS A FORCE FIELD OF IGNORANCE WHY CAN’T HE FEEL PAIN AND WHEN IN TEH WORLD DID HE DROWN???)

it is revealed that Mort is of a species that can absorb other Morts in the multiverse or, MORTiverse. However, Smart Mort, and later “Groovy 60's cult leader” Mort, also known as Hippie Mort, are two alternate versions of Mort, created by him due to the effects of both coffee, and tea- also known as Brown Julien, and Golden Julien- in both One More Cup and it's sequel episode. Smart Mort is an intelligent character, while “Groovy 60's cult leader”/Hippie Mort is a peaceful character. It is also revealed that Mort absorbed his own grandmother, and now she lives inside his mind. Also, it is seen in some episodes that Mort has versions of him inside his mind that he can talk to when he needs something. Mort is also portrayed to have some traces of Jewish heritage, as seen in Karl-Mageddon, after his grandfather shows up and a flashback appears of Mort as a child getting a present on Hanukkah from Grandpa Mort. He did mention that he got a pencil. (THERE IS SO MCUH TO UNPACK HERE??? HE ABSORBED HIS GRANDMA AND SHE LIVES IN HIS MIND???? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY MORTS AND HOW IN THE FUCK DID HE ABSORB THEM??)

It is indicated in Revenge of the Prom that Mort was abused by Grammy Mort, leading to her consumption. (Damn.)

He creates a romantic relationship with Zora in the All Hail King Julien: Exiled and marries her in The Day Before Tomorrow. However, in King Julien is Watching You, Zora leaves Mort and decides to live with Uncle King Julien. But Mort doesn't really seem to mind that. (He got married???)

At the end, he smiles when all the fur of King Julien gets lost since he had a bath his own 'love' potion. (what does that mean- WHAT DOES THAT MEAN)

After the penguins left, King Julien says to Mort that he expected a "little more pizzazz". Then, Mort eats King Julien in one gulp and amazes King Julien since it is 'pizzazz". (PLEASE- WHAT THE FUCK)

Mort shoots cobwebs from his palms in Night Creatures. (spiderman confirmed?)

Mort also tries to keep and preserve King Julien’s body multiple times when he believes he is dead, going so far as to create a display box for his severed feet in Phantom of Club Moist. He also tried to preserve Julien’s body in Pineapple Of My Eye and Julien 2.0. (WHAT WHY????)

He can turn his head 180 degrees anticlockwise in The Good Book. (That tracks yeah.)

Smart Mort who is seen after Mort consumes coffee Political Mort (Political Mort lmao) “Groovy 60's cult leader” Mort from One More Cup, Part 2 when he drinks tea An unnamed violent version of Mort who is never seen in control, but who often poses aggressive ideas to the other Morts inside Mort's head (Seen in Pineapple Of My Eye and The Strife Aquatic). Mort says to his grandpa in Karl-Mageddon that this Mort accuses him of doing crimes that he can't remember committing. (What???????) Cool Mort who is seen in Who Arted?, when he goes to meet King Julien for dinner.

There are 111 days left and ur on around 148 books whcih leaves u with approx 2 days per book for the rest of the year and if u read 200-300 pages a day that sounds very doable. aside from cliff's biography, i've not been reading much this year, i love it but the books i like/want to like aren't near, i don't think the only library near me works anymore (gotta love being lonely as fuck and living in an industrial city), and i think it's somewhat of a waste of money to buy a translation when i can read it directly from eng, i reread some poe lovecraft stuff i read last year and i think i'm gonna re-reread lovecraft this year. anyways, i'm gonna leave it at cliff's biography to live is to die. i don't like counting it since it's a way too light read, at least to me. i've tried reading pdf but i just don't adapt to it.

i think fennel likes to tuck little flowers behind marisols ear . marisols always got a nice little flower that fennel found outside and it makes her really happy (: if fennels REALLY feeling fancy and has free time theyll make her a whole little flower crown or a daisy chain and things like that 

i think marisol and soren become friends over this idk where this thought came from but its based to me . idk i just think itd be cute if marisol starts spending more time around her girlfreinds weird friend and they actually get along . marisol can keep up with sorens long rambles about necromancy theyre BUDDIES . they set up fennels birthday party together (:

Finding something that I enjoy doing, and others can enjoy the results of, is really what it's all about!!

The FE7 novels haven't had a whole lot of original content or as many supports in them as I thought they might, and a lot of details had to be left out to cram the entire story into 2 books. Just Lyn's story alone is over half of book 1.

But there are so many little details sprinkled throughout that really further enhances the experience in my opinion!! Also great timing that I'm translating it as the Switch Online version releases!! ^^
