in another universe, luna stayed on her rig and spent her days in peace, unconcerned with everyone else's wars, teaching the children how to fish, raising adria and having beachside picnics with her girlfriend raven reyes as they braid each other's hair

I wonder because- look, offering luna "a choice" could always be manipulative (raven could've raised the gun again if luna had run). so I'm now thinking that maybe part of what convinced luna to stay is that raven was willing to risk luna by having her go for the drone, in opposition to everyone risking themselves and saying "luna('s blood) is the priority!!" and even nyko died shielding her. it's doing something to save lives and not just seeing her as a walking blood bag.

Moodboard // modern day luna
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
luna grew up relatively well off money wise but her father had always made it clear that her sister was his favourite. it was relatively subtle from an outsider’s viewpoint but it was always clear to luna, she hated her father for this but managed to keep herself from blaming her sister, even when she was a kid she blamed herself more than her sister. she doesn’t talk much with her father anymore and while she doesn’t hold anything against her sister they just never grew up as sisters in the way most siblings do so they don’t talk but luna’s always asking people about how she is even if she doesn’t feel like she could ask herself.
in high school luna worked part time as a life guard, now she works as a welder making good money but she wishes she had a job on the water. she’s always loved the water and even though she doesn’t work near it (yet) she spends every weekend at the beach, sometimes with people, sometimes alone but she never goes a full week without making a trip to the ocean.

Out-of-Context Snippets of My Story (pt13?) :
****Lexa and Luna reflect on their conclave in a moment of reconciliation. (Fleshing out Lexa’s trauma/ their childhood has been one of my favorite parts of this story besides *Clexa*)
——————————————————
"Is there anything else you need from me Commander?"
Lexa's voice is monotone, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Luna steps up right next to Lexa to stand shoulder to shoulder, hands clasped behind her, also looking straight ahead out over the balcony, also keeping her voice monotone, "Is there anything else you require of me, before I return home, to Flokru?"
Tumblr media
Lexa's eyes flick sideways, and Luna meets them, clearly straining to keep her face hardened but her dark eyes convey the reluctance of the decision.
"Is that what you want? To leave?" Lexa's head cocks slightly to the side.
The older girl bites the inside of her cheek.
"I don't need to stay if my presence only does more damage, or is only a reminder...of everything."
Lexa doesn't answer right away.  Her tongue slides back and forth along the inside of her teeth as she clenches her jaw.  As angry as she's been at the mere sight of Luna lately, the thought of her leaving the capital hits her like a punch to the stomach.
"Always with the dramatics," The commander finally sighs, "I see that's not changed since you were 14."
Luna cocks an eyebrow, "You're one to talk."
The corner of Lexa's mouth twitches, "And if I still need you here?"
"Well do you?" Asks Luna.
Lexa pulls her bottom lip between her teeth, shifting her weight between her feet, looking down shyly.  A quick burst of shame radiates through her body knowing the answer, still unable to overcome her lifetime of conditioning that it's weakness to feel it.  It was an answer she'd wanted to tell her old friend for years but never got the chance, having never known where Luna ran off to into hiding. Lexa had mourned her as if she in fact had died in their  conclave.
"I never stopped needing you." Lexa says quietly.
Luna looks at the girl next to her, without her armor, without her red sash or her warpaint, and so clearly sees the little girl she grew up with, who she snuck off to their secret spot on the bluffs with, who she made secret handshakes with, giggled with over childish things when the guards weren't around. The girl who had so much light inside of her, surrounded by men doing everything in their power to dim it, to harden her. The girl who was more fierce and resilient than anyone, always destined for greatness.
Luna leans sideways, nudging the commander's shoulder with her own.
"I'm sorry I just disappeared, and wasn't there for you all those years, Lex."
The words crash over Lexa like a tidal wave, washing the rest of her bravado out from her body. She sniffles and twitches her nose, blinking a few times to keep herself composed.
"Why was it me?" Lexa asks, keeping her eyes looking out towards the balcony.
Luna isn't sure exactly what the commander is asking, but keeps her eyes straight ahead.
"Why was what you?" Luna asks back.
"If you were going to run, why didn't you run before the conclave started? Before you had to..."  Lexa doesn't finish... they both know she's referring to Luna's brother – her actual blood brother – who she was matched up against in the first round.
"I didn't know I was going to." Luna responds, "I was just as brainwashed as you from those teachings." Luna takes a deep breath, "As soon as it  started, I knew I would win if I wanted, but I also realized I couldn't do what needed to be done to win."
"But you still..."
"I didn't have much choice Lexa!" Luna says dejectedly, her voice cracks slightly, like she was lifting off a weight she had been carrying ever since that day. "It happened so fast. As soon as the horn blew his eyes went black and he charged at me, hard.  Like it was easy.  Like he had been waiting for that moment.  And maybe he had."
Luna's brother had always been in her shadow, always trying to prove himself in training that he was just as fast, just as strong. But year after year no one could best Lexa or Luna but each other. It felt like an unspoken truth when they were all gathered to start the ritual death match, that it would be one of them two who would be the last alive by the end of the day.  Maybe it was resentment that drove him at his sister in that first round, or maybe he had accepted his fate and just wanted it over quickly. Either way, Luna's superior reflexes reacted on their own in self-defense, and it only took two swift motions of her sword before she was cradling her brother's body in her arms as he bled out.
When she was told Lexa was her match was for the second round, she broke entirely.
"What would you have done?" Luna asks after a minute of silence.
"If I were you?" Lexa questions.
"If I hadn't run." Luna says.
More silence, as Lexa fights back all the emotions entwined with her memories of their conclave and the days immediately after.  Her most haunting memory was being laid out on a table to receive her spine tattoo right after the flame was put in her neck. Her cuts on her body hadn't even fully scabbed over yet, but the elders required her to be marked to symbolize her victory.
It had felt like anything but victory. She remembers lying there, staring at a spot on the wall, hoping Titus would attribute her tears to the pain of the needle. She silently apologized, and said her goodbyes in her head with each circle she felt being drawn into her skin.
Tumblr media
"So? What would you have done, huh?" Luna repeats, shaking Lexa from her memory.
Lexa swallows thickly and throws a coy side-eye at Luna, "I guess I'd have one more circle inked onto my back."  It's a weak attempt to keep it light, to mask the horrors from that day.
"Your ego was always unmatched." Luna scoffs, rolling her eyes, "But I'm serious. Had we stood there in the second round when the horn blew, what would you have done?"
The smug grin drops from Lexa's face, "I don't know Luna, I was fucking twelve! I didn't think I had any other options!"  Her heartrate spikes at her own defensiveness, and the young faces, one after another flash through her mind - the faces of those she grew up with, trained with, laughed with, comforted. She hadn't wanted to kill any of them. But more than that she was a young girl who just didn't want to die. Truly the most basic human instinct, triggered within a body trained since infancy only to fight.
"You knew what he would have done to us if we had refused." Lexa says meekly. It wasn't uncommon to see fellow nightbloods punished in front of the rest, to be made an example of for any misconduct. But Lexa's were the ones that were dealt in secret, under the cover of darkness, usually in her own quarters. Titus' star student had a secret that even the elders did not want getting out.
Being susceptible to emotions - especially love - was too big a liability for the girl they all assumed would be commander when the time came, and they took special interest in molding her into exactly what they wanted from an early age. They needed her callous. They needed her obedient.
They needed her heartless.
She'd tried keeping the beatings secret from Luna as well, but Luna wasn't gullible like Costia. She always knew. It was unspoken between them, when Luna would go just a tad easy on her the days she could tell Lexa was trying to hide a limp, or could tell she couldn't bend or dodge quite as fast due to a bruised back.
Luna of all people knew Lexa wasn't being injured like that during training.
"I couldn't protect you, Lex." Luna utters, "I didn't know what to do, and I hated myself for it."
"It wasn't your job to protect me." Replies Lexa stiffly.
It's a different kind of phantom pain, to grow up without parents. To long for something, for someone you never actually knew to begin. To feel like some part of you is forever lost out in the world like a ghost, who you might have been.  Being abandoned - or worse, stolen - as a baby, it's a void as deep as the ocean to crave that sense of belonging, to crave that parental protection, especially enduring the things they did as kids.
"I think about them... sometimes," Lexa says indifferently, "...my parents."  She steps towards the opening to the balcony, leaning against the wall where the curtains hang and crosses her arms.
"You think they ever think about us?" She asks Luna.
"Mine are dead to me, as I'm sure I am to them." The girl responds coldly, walking up to stand next to Lexa again.
Lexa sighs, "It's okay to miss them."
"What's there to miss? I don't even know what they looked like."  Luna turns to look next to her, shaking her head, "The person I needed most taught me I didn't need anybody..." She catches a glint in the green eyes staring sadly back at her, "...except you." She adds, nudging the commander with her elbow.
"As fucked up as Titus' teachings were....you can't say it didn't make us stronger."
"We were children, Lex." Luna says sharply, "We didn't need to be stronger. We didn't need to be fearless. We needed to be safe."
Lexa nods and stares back out at the city, breathing in through her nostrils deeply.  She doesn't think she's ever truly felt safe her entire life.  Someone in her position, with her power, she doubts she ever will.
"You're really gonna make me ask, aren't you?" Says Lexa.
Luna shrugs, "I mean it would be nice to hear, so yeah."
Lexa faces Luna fully, relaxing her stance, "Don't leave me again. Please, stay." She resists the urge to reach out for Luna's hand, "Help me ensure no Natblida will ever have to go through what we did."
