I have been using some dead times these past few weeks to go through/purge my latest Project Gutenberg raids, and there are two funny findings I have made:

1- Patricia Brent, Spinster (1918), by Herbert George Jenkins

In general a run-of-the-mill fake dating romance, short and innoffensive, but here's the thing, for anyone familiar with Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey

The love interest is a lieutenant-colonel Bowen (the story is set in the last year of WWI), wounded in action, D.S.O., M.C. now working at the staff

He's later revealed to be Lord Peter Bowen

He's the second son

His brother holds the title, and his mother, the dowager, is a kind, generous woman with a special link with her second son

Lord Peter has a sister too, Lady Tanagra, who helps the war effort with volunteers

Lord Peter has a man by the name of Peel on the same type as Bunter and Jeeves

Lady Tanagra is in love with a friend of Peter and hers, but nothing has come of it yet because he's of a lower class than her and not rich.

Lord Peter falls in love at first sight with Patricia, and proposes marriage to her many times

She refuses him as many times because of a sense of shameful gratitude and what his family would think

Of course the story and characters are different in several ways, and they are not as charming as Sayers', but the coincidences, the coincidences!

2- The Lonely House (1920) by Marie Belloc Lowndes (sister of Hillaire Belloc)

What I didn't know before downloading this book, is that it is subtitled A Hercules Popeau mystery. Yes, you guessed it, Poirot. But it predates Poirot for a little. The wikipedia page on Poirot puts it this way:

Poirot's name was derived from two other fictional detectives of the time: Marie Belloc Lowndes' Hercule Popeau and Frank Howel Evans' Monsieur Poiret, a retired French police officer living in London.[2] Evans' Jules Poiret "was small and rather heavyset, hardly more than five feet, but moved with his head held high. The most remarkable features of his head were the stiff military moustache. His apparel was neat to perfection, a little quaint and frankly dandified." He was accompanied by Captain Harry Haven, who had returned to London from a Colombian business venture ended by a civil war. [3]

But to say that the name was derived is to understate the situation immensely. Popeau has the physical shape, age, and way of talking and dressing of Poirot. Like Poiret, he's French (though still living in France; the plot of this story happens on a vacation he takes to Monte Carlo with... you won't guess... his friend captain Angus Stuart. A Scottish man, who, believe it or not, falls in love at first sight with our fair protagonist!).

And like, wow, we complain about fanfic with the serial numbers filed off, but if you were into reading many novels in 1920s Britain, there were THREE eccentric, short, plump, dandy-ish, French speaking, British captain adopting sleuths around. We'd have three nickels. Historians 1000 years from now would believe there was a significant number of French and Belgian sleuths traveling England and Europe during the first half of the 20th century.

Below you will mostly find information on my writing but I want you to know who you're following so I'll let you know a little about me too.

All about me

I'm a twenty-four-year-old woman living in wonderful Australia (AEST). I have had this blog for a very long time but only became active over the last three years and only started writing early last year. I'm also busy studying to get a bachelor's in a helping profession. I have a dog and a cat and I love them more than anything.

My blog

First and foremost, please don't follow me if you're under the age of 18. I don't want you here, especially considering the content of what I post. I do not make exceptions even if you coming to talk to me about something that is safe for work.

I am passionate about many social issues and will share posts about them from time to time. I have been told from knee-high that I'm opinionated and I'm very happy to share said opinions. Bigots of any shape will be blocked.

I enjoyed it, in short. Satisfying sports story, a solid message, decent humour and a serviceable cast. Emilio Estevez is fine in the role of Gordon, he’s definitely the best actor on display here. The numerous child actors are all alright, Shaun Weiss (Goldberg) is the one who stands out in my memory most. A nice little film about a local, youth ice hockey team, one for the family.

what i liked:

i really enjoyed the storytelling mode alternating between chronological order, flashbacks, forum posts from Isaiah's fans, text messages and calls between Isaiah, Eden, and their friends and family, and Eden's poems. it keeps the pacing going fast and fresh/interesting

the depiction of trauma is portrayed well, never diminishing how its effects linger long after the trauma-inducing event is "over", and dealing with its aftermath, how hard and non-linear the healing process is -- but with love and support, you don't need to be "fixed" or "saved" -- you are strong, you are loved for you, and in this way, you find the light for a pink dawn to rise on new horizons

the role and power of art in processing confusing, conflicting, heavy emotions and coming to grips with trauma, especially as chronicled through Eden's poems

Eden as such a compelling, (personally) relatable character. and holy hell this girl is unimaginably strong -- as she inspires all of Isaiah's songs, she's sure to inspire anyone who's been through trauma

the ending! it definitely made me excited for the next book about Isaiah's younger brother James and his mystery girl...👀

what i thought could be better:

through the dual POV, we get both Isaiah and Eden's feelings, though the focus is more on Isaiah and Eden's POV is mostly portrayed through texts/calls and her poems. i felt that Isaiah's POV was heavily focused entirely on Eden and their romance such that his own traumas fell a little by the wayside and at some point despite him reiterating how he isn't trying to save her, it did come off as if he had a savior complex; meanwhile, Eden's POV is heavily focused on her trauma such that the romance aspect seemed to be diminished because it felt as if her feelings for Isaiah weren't as strong as his for her. at times too the story felt a little too long for being repetitive with multiple scenes seemingly tackling the same thing. i would have liked to have seen Isaiah's own trauma and Eden's feelings about Isaiah and their romance being explored more.

The Snake Who Came in from the Cold

Doesn't work.

Nick Fury and Luke Cage team up! To retcon The Constrictor.

This story makes this bland villain more interesting. But chunks of it don't make much sense. To begin with, Frank's decision to turn to crime is stupid. Fury's decision to tell his family that he died is also stupid. And guess what? Fury and Cage offering him an unfair choice at the very end is... very stupid indeed!

I thought this series had turned a corner, but... nope! Even with a better writer, it's still an incurably dumb series. I don't get it. It could/should have been gritty gun-based action like the THE PUNISHER. Instead most of the story ideas are silly. And SHIELD always comes across as a terrible and inept organisation.
