Dollar Bin #68:
Poor, Wonderful Ira Louvin
I've never been to Nashville, nor the Country Music Hall of Fame within it.
But thanks to Hank Locklin I feel like I've been there:
youtube
Most of Locklin's songs are about 80 seconds long and are dedicated to his longing-filled lack of a love life. That makes the over three minute long Country Hall of Fame basically his Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.
I don't know quite a few of the artists he name checks in the track - I may claim Kris Kristofferson as a second cousin but I only own about a 10th of Willie Nelson's - count 'em - 100 albums and, while at a honkytonk joint the other day, I sought about the room, looking to throttle whoever was responsible for latest rhinestone cowboy horse crap being worked up today by the white men of Nashville which was clogging up the place's high-fi - but one of Locklin's lost heroes jumps out at me - and he should jump out at you - as a patron saint of the Dollar Bin and American culture itself: the late, great, and utterly doomed Ira Louvin.
Although they were born with the incredible surname of Loudermilk, Ira and his brother Charlie somehow settled on Louvin as their stage name. Ira, and the band's, Wikipedia articles are criminally short, so let me fill in a few sad, fantastic and ridiculous details for the uninitiated.
But first, let's offer you a soundtrack. Check out Ira's perfectly earnest, soaring high tenor lead, with Charlie's slightly descended replies on this, one of their many come-hither-so-that-I-may-high-five-thee-Jesus hits. (And, yes, we'll discuss it later, but that really is their album's cover... let me know if you ever find a copy of this rare and coveted record...)
youtube
Okay, so here's that quick background, all of it taken from my, likely suspect, memory:
You may already know some of The Louvin Brothers songs without realizing it. Emmylou Harris and Graham Parsons were big fans and covered many of their songs. And then there's the greatness of this early 90's cover of the band:
youtube
My buddies and I could not get enough of this song back in the day; as teens who had barely been conscious as the Soviet Union crumbled we could not imagine a world in which anyone feared nuclear weapons. Ah, for the early 90's....
Anyway, the brothers suffered through the depression era childhood in the KKK country of Alabama. One or the other of them, when interviewed years later, was asked about any other siblings in the family. "We've got a ton of sisters," Ira or Charlie replied. "Are they musician's too?" was the obvious response from the interviewer. "Oh of course; we're the worst musicians in our family." "Well then, why aren't they famous like you?" "Well, all of them were married and already raising their own kids by 13 and 14 years old. They were to busy to pursue music."
Somehow the brothers found their way to Nashville and became momentary stars. But then Elvis came along and turned white music on its head. Homely in every way and with zero dance moves, the brothers simply could not compete.
Charlie responded to this career setback by patiently laying down much of the foundation for the world's Willie Nelsons, Gordon Lightfoots and Mickey Newburys.
Ira responded by essentially inventing punk rock.
Consider:
He skillfully played a mandolin which he'd repeatedly smashed to pieces in fury while on stage. Then he repeatedly glued the whole thing back together.
He also destroyed four different marriages and died an addict at age 41.
His death came tragically at the hands of a drunk driver. But at the time of the accident Ira himself was dodging a warrant for his own arrest. The crime? Drunk driving...
Ira's third wife shot him in the chest, with a real gun, four times. I'm sure he deserved it. And yet he somehow survived and then got married all over again.
Charlie eventually got sick of his addictions and madness, ditching him a year or so before his death and then settling in for a straight-forward Nashville career. Here he is singing with Emmylou long after Ira's passing.
youtube
Sure, Kristofferson was marginally homeless for a spell, Merle Haggard spent a little time in jail, and Waylon Jennings should have. But they're all choir boys compared with Ira. He knew, all too well, exactly what he was singing about here:
youtube
I have the totally unfounded idea that much of Ira's problems are a matter of timing. Had he come of age in the 70's alongside Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, rather than in the 30's alongside his reasonable brother, I think Ira would have fit right in with punk rock's ethos and angst. But the aw shucks, vaudeville style, of his age dictated that famous musicians had to literally smile nonstop while performing. Imagine making music this good while demons slam about inside you and being forced to smile the whole time!
youtube
Nevertheless, I sense no irony in Ira's seemingly earnest Christian songs. He personally designed the brothers' now-famous-for-its-outlandishness cover for their record Satan Is Real. And just listen as he and Charlie bring the best of the gospel forth on one of the most beautiful songs I know from any era:
youtube
I'm almost certain that's Ira who offers up the song's mid-track homily. Preach Ira! Preach!
I trust the fine people at the Country Music Hall of Fame have an entire wing dedicated to the great, and doomed, Ira Louvin.

Didn't Wanna Feel Older in 2024? TOO LATE!
So long, 2023! You have been a weird-@$$ year to say the least. Between by having to repair old thumb drives, purchase a new printer, finding out I'm susceptible to anxiety attacks, trying out dating for the first time, getting my Discord and Steam account hacked, starting a new Discord server since said account was never unhacked, opened myself up to commissions, managed to post art for Halloween, got Covid, summoned more Kaijus to play an elaborate game of poker, and had a merry enough Christmas. Here's hoping 2024 will prove better. At the moment I have no new goals, since I just want to relax after four months of constantly being active. There's a mile of books, movies, and TV shows I need to get caught up on! My opinions on all of them will be given in future Giraffe's Eye Views, but for now let's get to what you all came here for: yet another unnecessarily long list of things celebrating major milestones this year!
You all loved it when I did this last year. In fact it got more attention that anything else I posted, including the original art I put way more effort and time into. Nah, that didn't sting at all. Seeing my sketches get ignored is so much fun. Passive-aggressive joking aside, I do still love making these lists, so let's get started with some major stuff this year.
Thanksgiving wasn't too long ago, so why not mention that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade turns 100 this year? I know, that's insane! Watching this festive event has become a seasonal staple in my house and is the only reason I've ever signed up for Peacock. Thank goodness in all those years it hasn't been smashed by a giant monster.
Godzilla turns 70 freak'n years old this year! How crazy insane is that? Here's hoping his old age won't slow him down when he teams up with King Kong this April. Even if it does, Gojira will continue being cinema's coolest character!
Contrasting with the King of the Monsters, Mary Poppins turns 60 years old this year. This movie, considered to be Walt's last masterpiece, has aged considerably well even after all this time.
Oh yeah, and Mickey Mouse enters the public domain this year. Still not entirely sure how that works, but whatever. What I do know is...

When you see this, post 5 songs you actually listen to and tag 10 of your favourite followers/mutuals!
Got tagged by @hikamaus, so now we're playing how much do I want to carefully edit my actual taste in music so I don't sound like some kind of 80 year old jukebox set to shuffle the game of ... musical ... musical chairs (?).

"Hit it."
Getting weird immediately with "Pecori Night," by Gorie with Jasmine and Joann, a Japanese cover of The Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night." Not just a cover, of course, because this has a cross-dressing guy dancing around dressed like a cheerleader... Can't find the original video for this one on YT, but maybe just listen to the audio only anyway. It's ... catchy. They also have a banger cover of "Mickey." No idea how I stumbled across these.
Song number two: "Fight Song / Amazing Grace" as covered / remixed / performed by The Piano Guys:
youtube
Great song, great performance, great video, what more can I say? Look up some other stuff by them if you like this one – "All of Me" and "Rockelbel's Canon" are good examples.
Third song goes here: I'm passing over some of the English-language Eurovision songs from the 80's that I've grabbed recently (I think I already posted them here?), and I'm choosing "The House You Live In" by Gordon Lightfoot:
youtube
He's more than just 'the Edmund Fitzgerald guy.' I can also suggest "Don Quixote," "Early Morning Rain," "Sit Down Young Stranger," "Second Cup of Coffee," and "If You Could Read My Mind" if you like this kind of melancholy, folk vibe.
Song Number Four: "Tracy" by The Cuff Links. Here's your obligatory oldies, happy pop song:
youtube
Fifth Song Goes Here: Finally, how about a lesser-appreciated 80's pop / rock song? I present to you the ballistic missile submarine Red October "Playin' With Fire" by Lita Ford:
youtube
I like her pop / rock stuff, but the majority of her work appears to be more country-sounding.
Thanks for reading / listening and you're welcome / I'm sorry.

So me and @mikeallenz have been obssessed with Disney Mirrorverse lately and we've come up with some ideas for it.
Most of the Guardians are variants of the original disney characters where their timeline diverged somehow. Like the variants in Loki. Only instead of being prunes, Mickey found them and recruited them to help protect the stellar mirror
Mickey, naturally, is the leader. He, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are the original Guardians
Belle was recruited after Adam was turned into another form by the Enchantress instead of resurrecting him. Now instead of a human, he is the staff she carries. Sometimes Belle can hear his whispers from the rose
In Rapunzel's timeline, Eugene stayed dead. Because of this she's very protective over her fellow Guardians
Ariel is the princess regent of Atlantica after her oldest sister took the throne
For Ian, the guardian gig was considered like college for him. Barley saw it as a huge opportunity in his magic career, and convinced him to take the job.
Belle and Ian are Mickey's apprentices
Mike and Sully's armor is made out of scream cannisters
Merida is now ruling Dunbroch, and is known as the Bear Queen
Maleficent is like the team wine aunt, and especially watches over Rapunzel. She's a bit wary of Maleficent at first cause she reminds her of Gothel, but calms down when Maleficient never asks to use her hair
Maleficent is actually suffering a bit thanks to her dragon curse. She's a lot more dragon than human now (hence her look in the game), and struggles transforming between the two forms
Hercules got his wings from Icarus
Elsa and Anna hate Gaston, and constantly make fun of him
Elsa is from a timeline where her Anna stayed dead and she exiled herself and found the Enchanted forest on her own. Meanwhile, Anna is from a timeline where Elsa stayed dead and she took on the mantle of the Bridge on her own.
Ariel loves Dory, cause she reminds her of Flounder
There's one fork in Tiana's kitchen/lab that is exclusively used by Ariel to brush her hair
Tiana is the team cook and medic. She's constantly making food and medicine for everyone. She may or may not use the Stellar Mirror to steal some supplies from Facilier
Mr Incredible's gauntlets and Dory's submarine was invented by Hiro and Mickey
Buzz and Anna are besties, and so are Woody and Elsa

Nickel Bin #38:
Mickey Newbury's Heaven Help the Child
I'm going to go ahead and just say it: Mickey Newbury's Heaven Help The Child (together with Gordon Lightfoot's Canadian Railroad Trilogy and, sure, Bridge Over Troubled Water) is the most epic, heartfelt, weird, cosmically vast and incredibly beautiful song offered up by a white 70's male in all of the Dollar Bin.

We are ALL building walls. They should be bridges.
