Your head’s pounding, but you’ve been in tighter spots before. You force a reboot, running a quick scan. Typical corpo blacksite flophouse—The stink of blood, sweat, and bad decisions clings to the walls.
You find a rusted shard of metal and grip it tight. Better than nothing. You rigged the lock and slipped out of the room, the sound of your bare feet drowned out by the buzz of cheap fluorescents overhead.
The hall’s empty. Nobody watching the cams—amateurs. You find a storage room with your gear dumped in a corner like garbage. Your Militech pistol? Check. punknife? Check. Even your boots. Slipping them on feels like hugging an old friend.
Now clothed and armed, you should be bailing, cutting your losses. But the faint sound of muffled screams crawls under your skin, pulling you back into the fray.
You creep closer, the door half-open. Inside, him.
The joytoy. Astarion.
Strapped down like a Maelstrom test subject, neural wires spiderwebbing from his temples into some black-market brain-dance rig. The machine's whining like a dying cat, each pulse making him scream. Some chrome-headed ganger's working the controls, grinning like he's watching prime-time BD entertainment.
“Picked yourself a zero, didn't ya? No creds, no dirt—just a fucking merc with nothin’ to give. You are lucky boss is not in town.” the ganger sneers, twisting a dial, “What good’s a pretty face if it doesn’t deliver?”
Astarion convulses, tears streaking his otherwise flawless face, “I—tried,” he whispers.  "Please, give me another chance.”
Something snaps in your gut. You’ve seen people broken, but this guy? He’s built to endure. Still, this is next-level fucked.
Your blade whispers through the air, clean and silent. The ganger drops, and you catch the falling remote and cut the power to the rig.
Astarion slumps, breathing shallow. You free him, pulling the wires from his skin. He flinches but doesn’t resist.
“Can you walk?” you ask, dragging him to his feet.
He groans but nods. “I’ve had worse.”
The two of you fight your way out, bullets and curses flying. By the time you hit the street, you’re out of breath and out of ammo, but alive. Barely.
You lean against a wall, wiping blood off your hands. “I should fucking gut you for this,” you say, leveling him with a glare.
Astarion chuckles, though it’s more pained than amused. “I’m flattered. But I was under orders, if that softens the blow.”
“Doesn’t,” you snap.
Still, you don’t hurt him. Just turn to leave, figuring he’ll disappear back into whatever pit he crawled out of. But when you glance back, he’s trailing behind you.
“What are you doing?” you snap again, tired and still on edge.
“I have nowhere else to go,” he says softly, eyes downcast, his voice a quiet plea.
“Not my problem,” you grumble, turning to keep walking.
“Wait,” he calls out, stepping closer. When you face him again, the vulnerability in his posture is tinged with a familiar, deliberate charm. His lips curve into the barest hint of a smile. “I could… make it up to you.  I’m quite skilled at certain things”
You raise an eyebrow, unimpressed. “That so? You think I’m just gonna take you in because you bat your lashes?”
“Not just because of that,” he murmurs, tilting his head just enough to catch the faint light. “I can be useful. I wasn't lying before, you know? the mixer? I can get you in.”
You pause, damn it he is beautiful. He shifts closer, his voice dipping into something silkier. “Let me stay, just for a while. I’ll keep out of your way. Or,” he adds, his smile sharpening ever so slightly, “if you’d rather, I could be very in your way. Whatever you prefer.”
You sigh, rubbing your temples. “Fine. One screw-up, though, and you’re out. Got it?”
“Crystal clear,” he purrs, bowing his head slightly. “You won’t regret this. I promise.”
As he falls into step beside you, you mutter under your breath. “Already regretting it.”
His soft chuckle is barely audible, but it lingers all the way home.

If you’ve rented an apartment in the US in the past several years, you may have had the sense that the game was rigged: Prices creep up not only at your building but at others throughout the city, seemingly in lockstep. A new civil lawsuit brought by the US Department of Justice today alleges that in many cases it’s not just in your head—and that a single company’s algorithm is to blame.
That company is RealPage, a Texas-based firm that provides commercial revenue management software for landlords. In other words, it helps set the prices of apartments. But it does so, the DOJ alleges in its lawsuit, by effectively helping its clients cheat; landlords feed rental rate and lease terms into the system, and the RealPage algorithm in turn spits out a suggested price that enables coordination and hinders competition.
“By feeding sensitive data into a sophisticated algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, RealPage has found a modern way to violate a century-old law through systematic coordination of rental housing prices,” deputy attorney general Lisa Monaco said in a statement.
RealPage’s reach is broad. It controls 80 percent of the market for software of its kind, which in turn is used to set prices of around 3 million units across the country, according to the DOJ. It already faces multiple lawsuits, including one from the state of Arizona and another in Washington, DC, where RealPage software is allegedly used to price more than 90 percent of units in large apartment buildings. RealPage’s algorithmic pricing first gained broader attention when a 2022 ProPublica investigation detailed how the company’s YieldStar software works.
The DOJ civil lawsuit, which was joined by the attorneys general of eight states, is a significant escalation in legal action against the company. It’s also a first for the DOJ, according to officials speaking on background during a call to discuss the complaint. While the government had previously filed criminal charges against an Amazon seller for algorithm-enabled price-fixing, this is the first civil action in which the algorithm itself, the Justice Department official says, was effectively the means of the violation.
The complaint itself quotes RealPage executives allegedly acknowledging anticompetitive aspects of its product. “There is greater good in everybody succeeding versus essentially trying to compete against one another in a way that actually keeps the entire industry down,” one RealPage executive allegedly wrote.
RealPage has repeatedly denied any allegations of antitrust violations, going so far as to publish a six-page digital pamphlet that claims to tell “the Real Story” about its products, along with an extensive FAQ page on a dedicated public policy website. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Attacks on the industry’s revenue management are based on demonstrably false information,” one section of that site reads. “RealPage revenue management software benefits both housing providers and residents.”
“We are disappointed that, after multiple years of education and cooperation on the antitrust matters concerning RealPage, the DOJ has chosen this moment to pursue a lawsuit that seeks to scapegoat pro-competitive technology that has been used responsibly for years,” said Jennifer Bowcock, senior vice president of communications and creative at RealPage, in an emailed statement. “RealPage’s revenue management software is purposely built to be legally compliant, and we have a long history of working constructively with the DOJ to show that."
The DOJ disagrees. “Algorithms don’t exist in a law-free zone,” said Monaco in a press conference to discuss the case. “Training a machine to break the law is still breaking the law.”
In this case, the complaint alleges that those algorithms consistently drove rental prices upward. “RealPage’s software tends to maximize price increases, minimize price decreases, and maximize landlords’ pricing power,” said the DOJ in a press release. RealPage also doesn’t just recommend prices; in many cases, it actively sets them.
“RealPage actively polices landlords’ compliance with those recommendations,” said US attorney general Merrick Garland in today’s press conference. “A large number of landlords effectively agree to outsource their pricing decisions to RealPage by using an ‘auto-accept’ setting that effectively permits RealPage to determine the price a renter will pay.”
The DOJ also claims RealPage has created a “self-reinforcing feedback loop” with its data intake and pricing recommendations structure that also gives it an alleged monopoly in the apartment revenue management software industry. Any competitor who plays by the rules, the DOJ claims, is at a distinct disadvantage.
The Justice Department has spent the past several years staffing up with technologists and data scientists, better enabling them to “interrogate the code,” as multiple officials described the investigative process. While this is the first major algorithmic collusion case, DOJ officials suggested it would be far from the last.

Growing ever more frustrated with the use of the term "AI" and how the latest marketing trend has ensured its already rather vague and highly contextual meaning has now evaporated into complete nonsense. Much like how the only real commonality between animals colloquially referred to as "Fish" is "probably lives in the water", the only real commonality between things currently colloquially referred to as "AI" is "probably happens on a computer"
For example, the "AI" you see in most games wot controls enemies and other non-player actors typically consist primarily of timers, conditionals, and RNG - and are typically designed with the goal of trying to make the game fun and/or interesting rather than to be anything ressembling actually intelligent. By contrast, the thing that the tech sector is currently trying to sell to us as "AI" relates to a completely different field called Machine Learning - specifically the sub-fields of Deep Learning and Neural Networks, specifically specifically the sub-sub-field of Large Language Models, which are an attempt at modelling human languages through large statistical models built on artificial neural networks by way of deep machine learning.
the word "statistical" is load bearing.
Say you want to teach a computer to recognize images of cats. This is actually a pretty difficult thing to do because computers typically operate on fixed patterns whereas visually identifying something as a cat is much more about the loose relationship between various visual identifiers - many of which can be entirely optional: a cat has a tail except when it doesn't either because the tail isn't visible or because it just doesn't have one, a cat has four legs, two eyes and two ears except for when it doesn't, it has five digits per paw except for when it doesn't, it has whiskers except for when it doesn't, all of these can look very different depending on the camera angle and the individual and the situation - and all of these are also true of dogs, despite dogs being a very different thing from a cat.
So, what do you do? Well, this where machine learning comes into the picture - see, machine learning is all about using an initial "training" data set to build a statistical model that can then be used to analyse and identify new data and/or extrapolate from incomplete or missing data. So in this case, we take a machine learning system and feeds it a whole bunch of images - some of which are of cats and thus we mark as "CAT" and some of which are not of cats and we mark as "NOT CAT", and what we get out of that is a statistical model that, upon given a picture, will assign a percentage for how well it matches its internal statistical correlations for the categories of CAT and NOT CAT.
This is, in extremely simplified terms, how pretty much all machine learning works, including whatever latest and greatest GPT model being paraded about - sure, the training methods are much more complicated, the statistical number crunching even more complicated still, and the sheer amount of training data being fed to them is incomprehensively large, but at the end of the day they're still models of statistical probability, and the way they generate their output is pretty much a matter of what appears to be the most statistically likely outcome given prior input data.
This is also why they "hallucinate" - the question of what number you get if you add 512 to 256 or what author wrote the famous novel Lord of the Rings, or how many academy awards has been won by famous movie Goncharov all have specific answers, but LLMs like ChatGPT and other machine learning systems are probabilistic systems and thus can only give probabilistic answers - they neither know nor generally attempt to calculate what the result of 512 + 256 is, nor go find an actual copy of Lord of the Rings and look what author it says on the cover, they just generalise the most statistically likely response given their massive internal models. It is also why machine learning systems tend to be highly biased - their output is entirely based on their training data, they are inevitably biased not only by their training data but also the selection of it - if the majority of english literature considered worthwhile has been written primarily by old white guys then the resulting model is very likely to also primarily align with the opinion of a bunch of old white guys unless specific care and effort is put into trying to prevent it.
It is this probabilistic nature that makes them very good at things like playing chess or potentially noticing early signs of cancer in x-rays or MRI scans or, indeed, mimicking human language - but it also means the answers are always purely probabilistic. Meanwhile as the size and scope of their training data and thus also their data models grow, so does the need for computational power - relatively simple models such as our hypothetical cat identifier should be fine with fairly modest hardware, while the huge LLM chatbots like ChatGPT and its ilk demand warehouse-sized halls full of specialized hardware able to run specific types of matrix multiplications at rapid speed and in massive parallel billions of times per second and requiring obscene amounts of electrical power to do so in order to maintain low response times under load.

Or from the moment, when Wens decided to attack their competitors, using the false accusations about owners, cyberattacks, sabotage and brute force?
Or when the little WWX's innovative company in the most infertile lands of Burial Mounds became way too bottleneck due to progressive researches of someone's brilliant mind, that the other big corporations collectively decided to wip the unwanted competitor from the market at all?
Maybe in the classic way, when WWX, who was in a coma for thirteen years after a huge fire in his laboratory, received the organ transplant and new face from unknown beneficiary — and waked up? With clear suspicions who was really behind this incident that also killed his shijie and her husband? Now he's unrecognisable for his friends and enemies and can investigate the case freely. Maybe, the little help from LWJ, the second heir of Cloud Recesses Inc., could be useful? They were just-step-before-good-friends in his previous life...

The Spectator as he was dutifully named, is an illustrious character amongst the community. Not only does he appear to have his claws in every syndicate, main stream gang, and every Black Market trade in the world, but he also seems to know a little too much about how things function within the A.S.A.'s inner workings.
Now the people, or civilians, don't know this. The UN and the A.S.A. have worked very hard to make sure that his name doesn't mingle within the main stream media. For good measure too as that would expose him as an international threat, and that's the opposite of what anyone wants.
He is the main villain of this story.
What do we know?
He hides in plain sight, whoever this man is, he's very good at blending in. Getting in and out of government facilities without anyone noticing. Traveling all across the world without a single blinking an eye, that is until it's too late and his work has already been finished.
Although, his work in the real world isn't as prominent as his work in the virtual world. Whether he himself is a tech genius or someone in his control, they know the ins and out of any system that's ever existed within modern technology. You know the expression, "I know this like the back of my hand?" well you could say he lives by that saying.
Now no one has ever actually seen his face, but they have heard his voice. A very enhanced and frankly hard to decode version that is. The Spectator has shown on more than one occasion that he's easily capable of taking hold of whatever situation comes his way. And even more capable of making it harder for everyone else to do their jobs. Especially the Octonauts.
Why do I bring them up? Well more recently, although we know he loves to toy with the other branches of the A.S.A. (cough cough, Safari Solutions, cough cough), the Octonauts have far advanced their efforts in helping the environment than the others.
They've created massive machines fit to do the simplest of tasks in the shortest amount of time. Not only have they created these machines, these "gups", but they have also advanced to building an entire artificial reef that, if we're being honest, could rival a city.
Adding to that they have now created their own program (The Octo-Agents), connecting people all around the world to help in the event of natural disasters, injured/sick Wilds, or any claimed "emergency" that deems itself worthy of their attention.
[ Wilds - Creatures who are "less evolved" than the modern image, or have chosen to live outside of the bounds of modern societies. ]
Now that might be a problem for a man who's seems so keen on keeping up a certain image, preferring the upper hand. A man who likes his figurines to be arranged in a certain order on his shelf. A man who doesn't care for people who undo what he's already sought out to create . . .
A man who . . . doesn't mind getting his hands dirty.
Affiliations:
We know he has his claws in the pool, but we don't know how far they reach. His influence has only been affecting the world for over a decade while others only recently have begun to show signs of loyalty.

The Black Ice Clan, run and directed by a man named Black Tack. A ever looming organization that's taken hold of the Northern Hemisphere, specifically within the Atlantic Ocean. Their methods are chilling to say the least. No one knows exactly how they've kept control for so long, but that's not to say anyone is eager to dethrone them either. [ Danger Level: 10 ]
The Jersey Gang, a rather up and coming group that has more recently taken hold of the lower swells of Zootopia, although their origins lie in Latin America and Japan. Not as prominent or notable as others who had their time in the sun, but they've proven useful in recent events. They are directed by a man by the name of Capone Redsurge. [ Danger Level: 8 ]

Somehow this organization is even more illusive than its competitors. No one is sure what it is or who runs it. But one thing is for sure, it may very well be the most dangerous group in the world.

Panasonic FS-A1GT (1992)
The Panasonic FS-A1GT MSX turbo R is the last MSX computer ever produced and follows the latest standard for the MSX line.
Originally, in 1990, Yamaha and ASCII announced the V9978 Video Display Processor, the video chip for the MSX3. It was a very capable video IC, with two different sets of video modes. In bitmap modes, it was capable of up to 768 x 240 resolution (up to 768 x 480 in interlace mode), up to 32,768 colors, superposition, hardware scrolling, and even a hardware cursor for Windows-like operating systems. However, the most impressive feature of these modes was the use of a fast hardware bitblock data mover. The MSX2 video IC was also equipped with a hardware bit mover, but the new one would be 20 times faster!
In pattern mode, it was able to use SNES class features. Multiple layers, 16k patterns, different palettes, 128 sprites, maximum 16 sprites per scanline. So basically an SNES but without mode7. However, something went wrong and the project was cancelled. Probably because of the great interest in marketing MSX machines and the growing interest in game consoles and powerful PC-like computers (mainly for word processing purposes), companies were less enthusiastic about making a new MSX machine. MSX's biggest software supporters defected to Nintendo and other computers/gaming machines. Sony chose to make their own game console.
Instead came the MSX Turbo-R, a supercharged MSX2+. Some people say that ASCII failed to deliver the new VDP in time for the 1990 release, so they only opted for the new CPU (named R800). However, the specifications and pinout of the V9978 were in some data books of the era.
Panasonic was the only company to manufacture and market MSX turbo R computers, and they were only sold in Japan. Several machines were imported to Europe via gray market imports.
The FS-A1ST was the first and was succeeded by the FS-A1GT, which had more RAM and MIDI IN and OUT.
After these two machines, it ended when Panasonic moved to their 3DO game console.

Cultural difference [or, ME puzzled again] when I think of the term "Manipulate" when I read L's personality traits on DN wiki
I think this is a continuation of my notes on cultural differences when interpreting DN
Manipulation. (had to make this bigger)
Until recently, in our society, we only just started to understand what the hell PUA and gaslighting even are. But I suppose these concepts were much more familiar in the Western world? At least, I never once considered L manipulative. In fact—what does manipulation really mean?
When it comes to manipulation in the english meaning to us, it has this scienter meaning (in simple terms: you’re doing something wrong, and you know it, but you still do it on purpose). What comes to mind is market manipulation. But when you translate into 操縱 in Mandarin Chinese, 操作(そうさ)in Japanese, it doesn't accurated describe what the westerners are referring to.
Let’s look at some dictionary definitions. In Mandarin:
操縱:
To drive, to control (a vehicle or machine)
To command or direct → e.g., 「侯能操縱有法,賦辦而民不驚,其賢三也。」 (My crappy translation: “The Marquis commands methodically, assigns duties, and the people are not alarmed—that is his third virtue.”)
It’s a neutral term. It doesn’t imply toxicity.
And it’s similar in Japanese: 操作(そうさ) means operating a machine, a vehicle, or managing data, organizations, or systems. It’s strategic, yes, but not emotional.
They both convey the same message:
It is not typically used to describe emotional manipulation (e.g. gaslighting, PUA, coercion, guilt-tripping).
It doesn’t inherently imply malice, emotional abuse, or sociopathic cunning.
You wouldn’t use it to describe someone playing with another person’s feelings or trust.
In fact, “Manipulation” (操作, Sōsa) is the sixth chapter of the Death Note manga, mostly centered around Light. In Death Note 13: How to Read, Tsugumi Ohba says the chapter name "Manipulation" refers to Light’s experiments on Death Note victims. It’s much more like puppet-play. Once the victims’ names are written down, they lose self-consciousness. They become puppets, with strings controlled by Light. So here, manipulation clearly means control.
Now—when it comes to the image of a detective, it’s totally normal for them to be cunning. (Otherwise, how would they outsmart criminals?) This ties into a broader cultural ideology of “If you’re the best, you can do anything” (as I mentioned in my previous post). And yes—because he’s a man, it’s more accepted. The smartest and most powerful male being cunning? Society often calls that ambition.
Does L control and command? Yes, he is the lead investigator. He is cunning and he lies, which is acceptable (when we think of an image of a detective) and because he's the best, he's a male (yeah this does make a difference) We even think that a male play by fair means or foul to accomplish a goal is a sign of ambition (of course in modern days it depends on what circumstance, but if it's in business or profession, still acceptable) the term manipulation in Mandarin Chinese is almost Justified.
Let’s go back to examples of L being “manipulative” (I literally asked ChatGPT for help on this because I didn’t know where to even start looking).
The Fake L Broadcast (Episode 1 / Chapter 2) He used a death row inmate to bait Light into revealing something. Was it control? Not quite—Light still had his mind. It felt more like a basic trap, a little trick.
Placing Bugs in the Yagami Household (Episodes 3–4 / Chapters 6–9) Totally normal investigator behavior. Illegal surveillance, but no emotional manipulation.
The University Entrance Exam & Tennis Match L said, “I am L,” just to observe Light’s reaction. They were mind-gaming each other, but no psychological control.
Using Misa Amane’s Confinement & Light’s Confinement Again—illegal confinement, yes. But no emotional strings being pulled.
The rest...no.
Now, what kind of behavior does fall into the modern definition of manipulation (the emotional control type)? Yes—Light's actions. (And I’m not saying this just because I’m an L fan. Or maybe I am. Never mind, I’m just rambling—don’t take me too seriously.)
Light’s manipulation is distinct:
He tricks Naomi Misora into giving up her real name.
He makes Misa do things by pretending to love her.
But does L manipulate the task force emotionally? No.
He has authority, yes—but he doesn’t force anyone to stay on the case. (Aizawa left. They tested everyone before revealing L’s identity.) He may push Matsuda to fetch coffee and run errands, but he’s never emotionally coercive. Everyone is free to leave. He even stops Aizawa from going out when Ukita dies. He feels loss. (Okay, now we’re getting back to L as a human.)
Let’s stop here and look at the bigger picture.
In modern terms like PUA and gaslighting, manipulation is about emotional control. But we’ve only recently become aware of this. Why? Because in our society, it’s normal to subtly make people do things without saying it directly.
Under our layers of politeness, we hint, we nudge, we expect others to “read the air” (空気を読む). This is true in Japanese too. We pressure others in silence. It happens in families, schools, workplaces—everywhere. It’s cultural. It’s the norm.
The West also has passive aggression and hints, of course. But they’ve talked about manipulation as a power issue much earlier. In a society where equality is a value, the power balance is watched more carefully.
Meanwhile, in many Asian countries, the hierarchy is still deeply embedded:
Parents > children
Teachers > students
Bosses > employees
Government > citizens
This imbalance is still normal. It’s expected. (And that's why our court decisions are making an effort in breaking such hierarchy)
Compare the timelines:
The U.S. Declaration of Independence, stating "All men are created equal"? 1776.
The French Revolution? 1789, with “Liberté, égalité, fraternité” already in place.
Now let’s look East:
In the 18th century, China was under the Qing Dynasty—absolute monarchy at its peak.

Confucianism is built on hierarchy and control. The emperor is elite and rules because of it. And the tool to control people isn’t law—it’s ethics.
I lost my train of thought again.
I guess my point is: I’m poisoned by East Asian Confucian ideology. And maybe that’s why I get culture shock when I see Westerners label L as “manipulative” in a negative sense. In a society that values strategy and hierarchy, L looks like a clever commander—not an emotional puppeteer. In Japanese, L is ずる賢い (cunning, smart in a sly way). But 操作 in an emotionally control meaning which is translated directly from the term "Manipulate" is not a term that would typically describe his actions.

I'm a hobbyist designer, and I research esoteric concepts on the periphery of mecha to find new views nobody else is writing about. I also am obsesed with trying to push the genre forwards.

I also took up programming to build a game faster than ACFA, more airborne than Ace Combat, and more "art of the blade" than Zone of the Enders 2 by studying mecha games through the lens of published declassified military grade airwar and psywar human factors engineering and psychology concepts.
I want to make this game about mechposting and the trans experience, but I need your help: not money, but to speak with you about mecha.

Haha >_< okay First thing is, since Fae and Alecto are from a Lancer game they exist in that setting. In that setting 'AIs' are commonly referred to as non-human persons (NHP) and they're not really AI, but actually extra/multidimensional beings that operate on a higher order of existence to normal people. Special processing units called Caskets are used to restrict these entities and force them into a more human, and useful shape. They are sort of digital beings by nature of the caskets being largely digital. It's not uncommon for Lancers (elite pilots) to acquire a combat NHP for their machine - many of the corporate licences provide access to a clone of a stable/standardised class of NHP along with their mechs.
NHPs can, if the casket is damaged or in other extreme situations enter cascade - a state of escaping the control of the casket and returning to their powerful, very alien, and typically beyond the scope of mortal comprehension true selves. Alecto is a Fury class NHP, a fork of Harrison Armoury’s Lucifer class developed to pilot an experimental autonomous mech: The Dirae Smart Weapon System. Due to high risk of cascade in combat situations, exacerbated by the absence of a pilot to shut the NHP down in such an event lead to the project being scrapped before entering any kind of full production. Thereafter a few of the prototype machines and casket print manifests found their way onto the black market, which is how Fae acquired Alecto.
Alecto is a combat AI, victory over designated foes is her calling and true desire, or at least so says her casket. Unlike typical Lucifer classes she is a bit more restrained and professional, but still entirely merciless.Unlike most NHPs Alecto is opinionated on her body, the mech - developed with the Dirae chassis in mind she considers it an optimal form, and is quite protective over ‘her’ physical self. She does not appreciate the way Fae abuses her reactor, but they otherwise get along fairly well.
