Direct action, simply put, means cutting out the middleman: solving problems yourself rather than petitioning the authorities or relying on external institutions. Any action that sidesteps regulations and representation to accomplish goals directly is direct action—it includes everything from blockading airports to helping refugees escape to safety and organizing programs to liberate your community from reliance on capitalism. Here we present a step-by-step guide to organizing and carrying out direct action, from the first planning stages to the debrief at the end, including legal support, media strategy, and proper security.
There are countless scenarios in which you might want to employ direct action. Perhaps representatives of despicable multinational corporations are invading your town to hold a meeting, and you want to do more than simply hold a sign; perhaps they’ve been there a long time, operating franchises that exploit workers and ravage the environment, and you want to hinder their misdeeds; perhaps you want to organize a festive, community-oriented event such as a street party. Direct action can plant a public garden in an abandoned lot or defend it by paralyzing bulldozers; it can occupy empty buildings to house the homeless or shut down government offices. Whether you’re acting in secret with a trusted friend or in a mass action with thousands of people, the basic elements are the same.

Hello! Apologies for the lack of activity! I have something fun to share with you all today, sent to me by the incredible @winter-doggo!
Tumblr media
Above is a photo of promotional poster for the Japanese release of THE DOG Island. My Japanese translation skills are very poor, but as far as I can tell it says something like: "The super cute dogs from THE DOG are now an Action-Adventure game!
Nintendo Wii / Playstation 2 Simultaneous Release!!
Expected Debut Date: April 26th, 2007 price: 6800 yen (excluding tax)"
There's also a link to a website at the bottom of the poster. This site dosen't seem to be up anymore, but we can access snapshots of the site thanks to the internet archive! I'll be spending a lot of time exploring the site, so I'll be sure to update everyone if I find anything interesting.
I've also uploaded the photos Winter Doggo sent of the Japanese PS2 manual for THE DOG Island to the Drive, you can find them here!

When I was renting games during the PS1 days, it was from the guy who ran the village shop who used it as a way to build his collection. They were just the retail versions.
Generally the kids took care of the games because in a village of 500, word got around if you damaged them. The local priest, in between his morning and lunchtime drink, once gave a group of us a lecture on this topic.
Actual question, did rented NES games come with manuals? Some of them seem pretty obtuse.
Most rental shops didn't want to include manuals with the games because the manuals would just get ripped, destroyed, or lost.
This led to some business including photocopies of the instructions, which Nintendo (who hated the idea of game rentals, thinking it would cut into sales) used as justification for a lawsuit, since copying the manual is technically copyright infringement or piracy or bootleggin' or whatever.
This, in turn, led to a rise of companies who would write their own original, cheat sheet-like manuals for games, reducing the instructions down to a single sheet. That sheet would be sold to the rental shops as a sticker, which could be safely stuck to the inside of the plastic protective case that most rental games came in.
That said, usually the answer was no. I saw a few places start to use those stickers, but they didn't have them for every game and most places didn't bother.

Wonderful news for video game history preservation, especially after the internet archive got attacked by greedy copyright holders over all the books they were archiving. I hope this library will thrive. :)

You’ll need to decide what kind of time and resources it might take to motivate people to act for a particular goal. There’s some basic criteria that you can use to evaluate how much work it might take to have an impact.
HISTORY/CONTEXT:
Have there been previous fights there?
Are people involved in current or previous struggles elsewhere? Experience and confidence are infectious. (Example: Many of the people who started the Ferguson uprising were fast food workers organizing at work.)
Are people paying attention to other external struggles? (Eg Tim Hortons workers fighting to keep benefits)
You’ll get a lot of this information by talking to people.

The repair manual prescribes pathways to consumer-dom or citizenship, scripting and scoring our evolving relationship to material things.
Shannon Mattern in Places Journal. Step by Step
Thinking through and beyond the repair manual
This is the fourth article in the series “Repair Manual.”
This essay is beautifully written, but it requires some time to read and to consider it. Throughout the essay quotations from it are placed in text boxes. It only takes a few minutesto read them. They give an excellent preview to the essay.
