What is up with A24’s treatment of Queer? Why did they sabotage their own product?

it's baffling to me. it's very interesting having watched from an adjacent perspective because it's like. at the beginning of A24 fame they seemed very selective about their acquisitions and branded themselves more as a production company than a distributor. and that was what made them so (and i say this like. in terms of their success not my personal feeling) good. like people bought into it. they were in a lot of real ways different from other film distributors. which made them "blow up" and be able to acquire more. and right now it seems like they're in a really flaky era of not knowing what to do with themselves now that they've expanded. they most likely don't have the manpower for that expansion and that's probably the main reason for the queer flop. like they're having to choose to prioritize other movies and it seems mainly (?) they prioritized babygirl as it was like. i saw four million articles talking about it but nobody actually liked the movie 😭 or cared really. but like to quote mean girls. they were REALLY trying to make babygirl happen.

like of course i don't know what exactly went into the division between A24 getting US distribution and MUBI getting international distribution (though A24 is as is proved by their merch etc a US centric company anyway). also don't know what went into deciding what movies to promote more than queer or wtv. it's strange to me that luca's movies haven't really been nominated (with the sort of exception of challengers) since cmbyn like? like i just don't get that in any way. i'd have chosen other movies over cmbyn for awards season hype in the first place so i can't even begin to untangle that.

i also can't express how confusing i find this for my circles and even slightly beyond but i also do think it's unfortunately that queer isn't a story for the mainstream. like i think even when it comes to burroughs work people don't fully know what to do with queer because compared to his usual it's just so raw and personal. so then you're taking like. a famous but more gritty writer's most emotional work about a perceived one-sided love story and adapting that into a movie. and when you think about a mainstream audience that already finds queer love stories hard to comprehend this one is just going to be more difficult.

idk it's really hard for me because on one hand like. i think one of the most annoying parts of the cmbyn wave were people interpreting it as this wholesome love simon esque love story when it just. isnt. and if queer had hit the mainstream i'd be fighting for my life trying to get people to understand it's fucked up and awesome instead of like. uwu tenderqueer stuff. rather than fighting for my life getting people to watch and engage with it. and i almost prefer the current reality even if i wish everybody in the world had seen this movie. but IDKKKKK. i guess what i think is that A24 should award me and 5 other people a dinner at luca guadagnino's house just so we can say thank you and kiss his cheeks for his service to filmmaking etc. and fuck A24 until they send me my queer zine at which point thank youuuuuuu A24. and release a bluray and vinyl and script book for queer at which point thank youuuuu. A24.

All and all: excellent manga, overall very good final act, too rushed final 2-3 chapters but weak and honestly mediocre epilogue, which makes the high of the ending kind of leave a bitter taste. I think Noda had a good steed and suddenly he had to finish and had to rush all. So the ending in the sense of the final arc was good but the ending proper (final couple chapters) + epilogue......... Not so much

another thing i also love is when rigid systems are also intricate and arcane and very confusing so like, all the different types of magic intermingle and cross over and people keep inventing new sub-specialties mixing different ones together. there are a certain number of primal elements (space, time, light, gravity, being some) but then these develop not only into things like lightning and fire, but further into really specific ones with family trees that can get Very complicated.

you have hedgewitches which are like, double-descendants of life magic focusing in on what are usually considered really mild spells with some bonus space and time influences depending on the individual (arezu is one of these), or geomancers like lian, who use a combination of predominantly-sinister space and earth to focus in on nondisruptive traversal. then you've also got schools that are almost more of a job title than a course list. cyllene is an ex-draconid swordguard, meaning she was trained in a very eclectic combination of schools to be used dexter and channeled through her blade. laventon is a mage of the library, using magic almost as an accessory, with minor gravity/eye spells used mostly to help with lab work.

other thing i'm still thinking about is pre-hisui ingo's role. like if this is a fantasy type world there's probably nothing too similar to the subway, and if he's such a diehard light mage and that's a domain so focused on truth/ideals/healing/harming, it would be sort of weird for him to be doing public transit anyway. don't quote me on this but ingo and emmet have always sort of felt mailmancore. like they would be postal workers if they weren't doing the battle subway. so maybe it's that. maybe this world has a REALLY intense mail delivery system

Are we allowed to submit albums from movies? I submitted Sing Street, a new-wave style album from the movie Sing Street (2016).

The movie revolves around a group of Irish secondary school boys in 1985 who create a band that is influenced by the music of that era and rebellion against their strict Christian School.

I submitted this because it is not technically a movie soundtrack only, it is made up of songs that the in-movie band Sing Street creates (8 original songs). I just wanted to double check that it is allowed.

Regardless, Sing Street is a very charming movie with great music/characters, I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it <3

Yep, as long as it's an officially released* compilation of 4+** songs, you're good to go!

*Officially released does not have an exact definition, so use your discretion. If there's clear evidence of physical or digital distribution that should be fine.

**If there's like some prog metal band who's released a 3-song album where each song is made up of three parts, and the whole thing is like 30 minutes, that's also fine. Again, it's what would make sense for this blog. A two-song single release, especially one in anticipation for a release of the full album fits less so, for instance.

But yeah movie related albums very much fall under the category of what's acceptable. You see a lot of vinyl pressings of them too, so to me it falls pretty firmly in the range of what can be considered an album, even in the traditional sense!

man i dont wanna be that guy, but the skyblock wars thing on the legundo community server is so just. incredibly frustrating to play rn

like, disregarding my own wifi issues entirely, bc theyre a seperate ongoing problem, lapis is mostly composed of younger players and people with actual jobs and stuff, and then redstone has. every moderator except 1, and two of the best pvpers who literally like never log off.

im not gonna accuse mods of using mod perms to cheat, because i gen dont think they are, but speraking as someone who has experience on several servers being mod/build staff, it is functionally impossible to be without bias as a mob in a competitive setting, especially when its, yknow, every single mod except one versus a team mostly composed of 12 year olds. hell, one of our players is literally 8.

and. i mean it sucks. its not enjoyable to play anymore when the other team is making fun of us for things out of our control and the mods arent really doing anything about it bc its their teammates doing it. and then theres stuff like the cobble challenge, where their entire island was basically already stone brick from the start. im not saying its cause the mods knew that was gonna be the challenge, but i am saying im not ruling it out. and then we know the mods fly around occasionally, and yeah they tell us that its for actual mod purposes, and i believe them, but i also believe that if they were to notice some new builds or farms or whatever while they were they theyd 100% mention it to their team.

and again, even disregarding that, even if im just off my rocker and everything ive noticed as unfair and upsetting is just in my own brain, theres the fact that the other team is gonna listen and respect the members of the mod staff more bc they have a real, tangible power over them, where as random children just arent gonna listen to syl even if they were the one voted in to be the leader. they gonna listen to a mod, but not another player. thats a real, tangible advantage they have.

i dont wanna say the mods cant also play the game and have fun, because they can! its totally possible to do smth like this and still let them play! but they need to be split up evenly between the teams or is gonna cause the issues we're currently having. no one on lapis is having fun or wants to play anymore really. poor syl has cried on call. i dont really care how many times people say its just a game. youre saying that because your team is winning, your team is tacked, your team has all the good pvpers and moderators. if lapis was in the lead youd be upset and i know it, because wth this new base quest that just finished you went and whined to ecr because hyper used an existing base on your island to win the quest. he asked ecr and got an explicit yes, and dino and justin ran to ecr about it and now we each got half a point, basically voiding the quest.
