im thinking about making my own farm map but have never done so before, other than the modding wiki guides do you have anything that might help? or tips? (also, putting all my ideas into one coherent design is haard lol)
Hi anon! I'm glad you asked this question. This is going to be a VERY long answer so bear with me!
To me, making farm maps is a balance between one's technical skills (mastering how a map works, like map properties, location data, etc.) and aesthetic skills (your eye for design; basically how to make your map look good).
You can be good at making a map work in game but people don't find it aesthetically pleasing, or vice versa. Both have their own niches - me personally, I would never use one of those really big, empty maps, but people whose goal is to earn as much as possible would - but it's always good to be able to strike a balance.
Reading through the modding wiki will only help you so far in making maps. It will help you on the coding aspect, to load your map in game and make it function - but it won't help you on the aesthetic aspect. You have to study and practice for that. Find farm maps you consider aesthetically pleasing. Dissect them. Inspect the elements that you like to see. It could be how the cliffs are done, the shape of the rivers, etc. Download the map and open the files in Tiled, see what tiles are used to build which element.
The new 1.6 outdoor tiles (spring_outdoorsTileSheet2.png) has the 2-tile height cliff faces and water-dirt border tiles that works wonders for making natural terrain and river bends/pond shapes. I've gotten a LOT of mileage from those tiles!
(On a more personal note, I've been helpfully informed that in literally every game I play that has building elements, I become a full-time builder. Let's just say I have 'work experience' through building in Sims 4, and way before that, experimenting with parallax maps in RPG Maker VX Ace. Those are very different things in terms of technical aspects, but it definitely improved my eye for design.)
As for putting your ideas together - I find the easiest way is to start from a list. Before making my maps I think of what the basic concept for the map is, then what features I want to add, and work from there. For example, here are the earliest sketches for Blossom Crest:

You can see that I emphasized the planning mainly on terrain shape, feature elements (the suspension bridge), the gameplay elements (minecarts in), and the position of farm map features (e.g. grandpa's shrine). Only after I have determined these will I start adding terrain details, and I trust where the process takes me!
I highly recommend developing a structured workflow as well. When I worked on Meadowbrook Falls, I fucked myself over because I keep jumping from part to part on the map, and worked on all map layers on each individual section instead of one layer on the map as a whole before moving on to the next. Now, my priority after finishing the sketch is to lay down all terrain shapes on the Buildings layer, then filling in the water/dirt/grass parts, then terrain detailing (adding paths, dark grass patches, etc.), then decorating (deco bushes and trees, etc.), and finally the Paths layer (debris spawns, berry bushes, etc.).

TL;DR: Read up on the modding wiki to get you started on the technical aspects of map-making, dissect other people's creations to improve your aesthetic skills. Develop a structured workflow to make sure the creation process goes as smoothly as possible, and to minimize having to redo parts of the map in case of errors.

The Chrimer: 2016, GP3.

In 2016, Charles returns to ART Grand Prix as one of their GP3 drivers. This would be the first (and only) time he'd race under their name in single-seaters; previously, he had karted for the team in 2012 and 2013. It's a good team. By the time Charles joins the roster, they've come off of winning five teams' championships and three drivers' titles in just six seasons.
Their success isn't the only reason why this partnership is advantageous to Charles. It also puts him with some familiar faces.
ART GP was co-founded by two men that would be very integral to Charles' career: Nicholas Todt and Frederic Vasseur. Todt would be the manager that saved Charles' career in karts, and Vasseur would later be Charles' first F1 Team Principal.

In the press release, Charles says:
"I am delighted to be back with the big ART Grand Prix family after my karting seasons in 2012 and 2013. GP3 is a very competitive category and I will be in the best team in the championship. The atmosphere is good and everything everyone is working with a common goal: to win. I am excited about the car they have prepared for this season and I can't wait to start the championship. My objective is clearly to fight for the title."
GP3 would eventually be merged with the Formula 3 European Championship-- the category Charles had competed in the previous year-- to form present day F3. In 2016, however, GP3 was considered a minor step up from F3: the cars were a little faster, and the tires were a little more difficult to master.
Somehow, Charles' announcement that he would be graduating to GP3 with the top team wouldn't be his biggest press release of the week.
On March 1st, Ferrari formally announces Charles as the newest member of the Ferrari Drivers Academy. This had been rumored for months.

Ferrari goes a step farther by also announcing Charles as a Ferrari Development Driver and "on the books" of its F1 customer team Haas. The position with Ferrari would mean that Charles would be working on the Maranello simulators to test data for Vettel and Raikkonen, and the connection to Haas was rumored to be structured so that Charles could gain experience by driving in FP1 practices during the season.

At this point, Haas was the customer team closest to Ferrari; Sauber would not rebrand as Alfa Romero until late 2017.
Charles is the favorite going into the 2016 GP3 season, to the point where Motorsport.com titles their season preview "Can anyone stop Leclerc?":
“His karting record and early campaigns in single-seaters suggest Leclerc might be one of the biggest talents of his generation, but with that has come the burden of expectation. Still, early indications suggest he won't buckle and, if he doesn't, he might be unstoppable. [..] No wonder our entire panel picked him as the champion, Leclerc is the whole package - super fast, quick to adapt, consistent, strong racecraft. It might put too much pressure on him but not winning the title, which is as option in this field, would be a disappointment.”

Charles starts off his GP3 career dominant. He impresses in tests by going fastest:

Before the GP3 season starts, Charles gets his first taste of the future by testing a F1 car for the first time.

He drives a 2014-spec F14T at Fiorano with the goal of completing the 300km needed to be granted a free-practice-only super license. Charles is the first GP3 driver who tests that season.
The FIA super license is the qualification needed for a driver to compete in the F1 World Championship. In order to get a full one, a driver must (as of 2021):
Be at least 18 years old at the start of their first F1 competition
Already have an International Grade A competition license
Have a valid driving license
Pass an FIA test on the F1 sporting codes and regulations
Completed at least 80% of each of two full seasons of any of the approved single-seater Championships
Accumulated at least 40 points over the previous three seasons in those championships
Getting a full F1 super license is critical to Charles' hopes of bypassing F2 for F1 next season. He comes into this season with 17 super license points: 10 from finishing runner-up in the 2014 Formula Renault 2.0 Alps, and 7 from finishing fourth in the previous year's F3 European Championship. In GP3, 30 points are given to the winner and 20 to the runner-up; this means that anything less than first would eliminate his chance of jumping to F1 in 2017.
Charles would continue to excel through the end of the season. Unlike in F3, he would come out swinging and continue strong until the very last race. Charles wins the series opener in Barcelona; he goes from second row to leading the race by the first corner, and never looks back.

According to reports, Ferrari Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene sneaks away to see Charles' first win as a member of his FDA.
Charles finds his only rival that season in a familiar face: Alex Albon, an old karting teammate and fellow member of the ART GP team. If you want in a more in-depth look into their relationship this season, you can read Part 2 of my Chalex primer.

It is important to note that Alex and Charles trade wins and share multiple 1-2s throughout the season, like so:

In June, Haas would officially announce Charles' first Grand Prix weekend as a test driver. He'd replace Esteban Guiterrez in five practice sessions throughout the season, starting in Silverstone.

Charles does well. He says to NBC Sports:
“It’s been an amazing experience for my first time in a Formula 1 car. I was struggling quite a lot at the beginning, as Silverstone is quite a hard track with lots of high-speed corners, and I found the steering wheel quite stiff in comparison to anything I’ve driven before. However, it was a great session and lap after lap I gained confidence. The last run was on old tires, so we couldn’t show our real pace, but I think we were quite fast. We completed the program and that was the main aim, so I’m happy with that. It was probably one of the best days of my life, and to do it with Haas has been even more amazing.”
Gunther Steiner, the Haas Team Principal, agrees:
“I found it quite good how calm he was about the whole thing, and we must never forget this is an 18-year-old kid in an F1 car - the fastest racecar in the world. I wasn't surprised by him, but I was impressed by him and what he did. [...] He was very professional, he did a good job, and he showed he can do it.”

Four days later, Ferrari brings Charles back to Silverstone to test in one of their cars. He describes the difference to Autosport.com:
"It's two different things. In FP1 with Haas that was mostly for the team because they had a weekend after, and I had to work for them and do as many kilometres for them as possible. With Ferrari it was a long day so we could plan it a bit better. Unfortunately we couldn't do many laps because of a little problem on the old power unit, but both experiences have been amazing. It's still good to get experience in two different Formula 1 cars. The more cars I try, and the different ways I see of working, the more experience I get."

It's very clear that Jules is on Charles' mind as he tests at Ferrari. He talks extensively to the press about his mentor:
“Jules advised me really well in the past, and all his comments he gave me in the past I keep in mind and try not to make the errors he told me not to do. [...] Jules was one of the talents who would have gone [to Ferrari] if the things that happened hadn't have happened.”
Jules' memory weighs heavy on him for that entire season.

Charles continues performing at a high-level both in GP3 and as a test driver: rumors for his next season remain abundant, especially as he stays at the top of the standings. One of the largest rumors is that Charles will bypass GP2 for an F1 seat with Haas the next year.
These hopes are soon dashed. In September, Gunther announces that they will not be signing Charles for 2017. He says:
“In the position we are in, he's too inexperienced. I wouldn't say too young, as Max Verstappen does a good job. We highly respect what Leclerc is doing in FP1, he was on the gain immediately. But what we need as a team is somebody who can score points. We need to train the team, we cannot train the driver. It [taking a rookie] is not an option at the moment, it's not a thing we want to do."
The comparisons with Max continue to loom over Charles, both in F1 and GP3. An F1 junior driving ranking says in the lead up to the final race:
“In an age in which every junior driver is seemingly being measured against Max Verstappen, Leclerc is one of the few who clearly compares favorably. His Euro F3 campaign in 2015 was in my view every bit as impressive as Max Verstappen’s the year before. In 2016, Leclerc stepped up to the considerably more powerful GP3 cars and generally looked strong since winning the first race of the season. He leads the championship going into the last race weekend and most importantly leads another Ferrari junior, Antonio Fuoco, who is now in his second year of GP3. While a Formula 1 seat cannot be out of the question, I expect Ferrari will promote Leclerc to GP2 next. They may still be wary after their previous top junior, Raffaele Marciello, struggled to continue his earlier junior successes in GP2.”
The final race weekend of GP3 ends up the most important: Charles and Alex go into Abu Dhabi each with the chance of claiming the Championship.

Alex says:
"I think Charles' gap is a bit big. In a way I don't have anything to lose, there is no real pressure or anything for me. It's just about doing my job doing the best that I can and let's just hope Charles has a bad weekend."
Neither of them actually finish the feature race. Alex– who had gotten pole position that weekend– hits Jack Aiken while fighting for the lead and has to retire. Charles doesn’t make it much longer in the race; he gets run off the track by Santino Ferrucci while fighting for third.
It doesn’t matter. With the way the points are, Charles wins from the sidelines.

He says:
 “It was really strange to be champion and finish in the wall at the same time. When I heard on the radio we were already champions because Alex was out, then I took the risk. […] But it’s an amazing moment. So much dedication into this season - it’s amazing to finish on a high, on a low, but winning the championship.”
He also makes it clear that sometimes you can be a champion and still make time for drama:
“To be honest what Ferrucci did was completely stupid, I will have to go see him and talk to him. What he [Ferrucci] did already from the beginning of the race was really crazy, I already had problems [with him] this season and he kept going knowing I’m [competing for] a championship, which is really stupid.”

Charles finishes the season with 202 points to Alex’s 177. In December, it is announced that Charles will take Pierre’s-- who has just won GP2-- Prema spot.

Nekromidnite of ECL's most tech-advanced dorm, with the students being experts in tinkering with magi-tech, but also mastering lunar or dark magic. But unlike Ignihyde, who are mostly introverted and quiet, Nekromidnite uses their technological knowledges for one thing...Music, specifically rave music. They mostly are in charge of overseeing the musical atmosphere for most school events, with their housemistress being skilled at using a DJ turntable. The students in Nekromidnite are extroverted, hyperactive people who always make the room more lively regardless of any atmosphere, which can cause some annoyance for others...
"A dorm founded on the Mystic Moonweaver's spirit of insightfulness. Students in this dorm focuses on the study of dark arts, lunar magic, and the mysteries of the unknown, all the while letting them embrace the spirit of rave music motivating them."

The housemistress would wear a special ceramic mask equipped with an audio sensory panel across the mouth that can receive vocal outputs from the mouth and visually show it through sound bars whenever a special event comes up (For no particular reason but to hide her actual face-). The magic item is a unique one, with it being a geometrically-designed drone resembling an owl, with two modes to it depending on the magic output. When magic is being used, it would change forms to emit magical holograms of vinyl records, speakers extend from its shell and the mage stone core it has opens up, using music as a way to expel excess magic energies.

Seraphina Nightingale, junior housemistress of Nekromidnite, is the very embodiment of mystery, discipline, and duality at Eventide Corvus Lyceum. Known across campus as a prodigious magi-tech engineer, Seraphina’s presence is like that of a sleepless sentinel—her sharp eyes always flicking across schematics, blueprints, and arcane code, whether it's for dorm enhancements, security systems, or magical research. She seemingly never rests, constantly overseeing the eerie yet efficient projects of Nekromidnite’s students, encouraging innovation, independence, and precision.
When the stars rise high and the campus grows quiet, Seraphina sheds her cold façade and becomes K3R-35 ("Keres"), a mask-wearing, neon-lit DJ goddess of the underground rave scene. In this form, she unleashes a tempest of sound and light, channeling her pent-up stress into hypnotic beats and strobe-fueled bass drops. On the dance floor, she’s a legend—a stark contrast to her daylight persona. Only a rare few even suspect her double life, and she intends to keep it that way.

In actuality, Seraphina also serves as the lead secretary of STYX, the ominous and secretive research facility on the Isle of Woe. There, she catalogues every record, every experiment, every anomaly with unwavering loyalty. Her meticulous nature makes her indispensable—a data queen who never forgets, never questions, and never fails to deliver. Her obsession with precision and record-keeping makes her an irreplaceable part of STYX’s system… but privately, she seethes beneath her composed surface.
Years of monotonous grind and being overshadowed by Idia Shroud’s haphazard genius have fueled a slow-burning resentment. Seraphina views Idia’s lack of responsibility as an insult to the structure she upholds. In her eyes, he doesn’t deserve the power he holds, and she’s determined to one day prove she’s more than capable of replacing him—as the true director of STYX. During the days of working at STYX before her enrolment into ECL, she built two companions out of parts she can salvage from unwanted scraps to assist her in proving her worth to the whole Jupiter family that she deserves a promotion for all her hard work.

KRY-57 [Krystall] (???) - A highly advanced combat android designed by Seraphina Nightingale during her early tenure at STYX and assigned as vice housemistress of Nekromidnite. She is capable of storing immense quantities of magic from spells, curses, or enchanted weaponry. What begins as a defense mechanism quickly turns into an energy reservoir, allowing Krystall to convert offensive magic into raw fuel for devastating counterattacks or emergency shielding. Over time, Krystall developed a quiet yet fiercely loyal temperament, resembling a protective older sister with a blank stare and a surprisingly tender side when interacting with Seraphina. (Twisted off Hecate's giant crystalline monster)
MIM-05 [Mimos] (???) - The second of Seraphina Nightingale’s personal protector units created during her tenure at STYX. Mimos’s most dangerous trait is her adaptive learning algorithm, which not only allows her to imitate Unique Magics and weapon techniques after brief exposure but also to evolve counter-strategies in real time. Though programmed initially for loyalty and obedience to Seraphina, Mimos is slowly developing her own form of individuality, exhibiting quirks like tilted-head curiosity, mockery of foes using their own voice patterns, and brief flashes of humor, often unsettlingly delivered in deadpan tone. The Vital Art
When the human species began to master the molecular machinery that underlay its own existence, the first applications were thoroughly practical. It eventually became simple to engineer viruses that, injected into one's bloodstream, would go hunting on their own for pathogens and cancerous cells, and destroy them instance by instance with a thoroughness and ruthlessness that would make an inquisitor shudder. It was not unheard, of course, that some of these viruses would escape control and become pathogens of their own, as any selfish mutant would necessarily enjoy an immense evolutionary advantage over its obedient brethren. But other waves of nano-cleaners would come to chastise the first, and it would be rare for more than one to rebel.
Bacteria and other such microbes would be tailor-made for all sorts of industrial applications. The cunning alchemies devised by four billion years of seething mutation and merciless selection could be gathered and placed together by the foresight of intelligence. Some would be sprayed over landfills and polluted rivers to break down plastic polymers, encase radioactive waste in glassy foam, strip polluting organochlorides of their flesh-warping powers. Others would swarm on metal structures and use the energy of sunlight to reverse the oxidation slowly eroding their beams; or sifted through mining waste to concentrate and purify metals. It was possible to translate any message into a sequence of nucleotides, and to store them safely in bacterial spores, packing terabytes of data in a droplet of water. All had been carefully crafted so that they could never survive within animal bodies.
Thence it was hardly a leap to cultivate animal and vegetal cells in aquaria and petri dishes. It became trivial to grow any tissue from a single cell; and soon later, authentic giant panda meat was no more expensive than chicken breast. The basest mixture of organic matter, down to dead leaves raked from a yard, could be liquefied into nutrient broth, and sown with the seeds of a feast worthy of royal courts. Rumors were heard of wealthy eccentrics dining on their own projected and multiplied flesh. (Conveniently enough, large swathes of humanity agreed that raising animals for meat was a moral outrage only a few years after synthetic meat had become cheap and satisfactory; though not large enough to prevent meat breeds from surviving as pampered status symbols in isolated regions of the planet.)
Bio-artists managed to grow whole functional organs out of stem cells; and then linked them with artificial nerves and guts and blood vessels, giving life to minimal creatures, networks of interconnected glands lying in a collection of petri dishes. These could turn food into colored secretions or pleasant scents, baring every step of the process to the gawkers. Miniaturized versions were later enclosed in a smooth carapace and sold as decorations, such as living lanterns that could produce a warm firefly light for a few drops of nutritive solution. Designing self-sustaining systems that could perform such functions on a spoonful of sugar became a common assignment for schoolchildren.
Some bioart companies released all-purpose "basic creatures" into which decorative organs could be plugged and exchanged at will, so that the same pulsing fleshsac could nourish a cluster of multi-colored lights one day, musk glands with the scent of lavander and pine resin the next, then a chitinous carillon or a battery-recharging orifice. Subcultures made a game out of the collection of functional organs. This resulted, for a while, in unpleasant exchanges of pathogens; and many owners found expensive organs swollen and oozing with infections. Specialized antibiotic vials became very quickly an indispensable accessory.
All the arts of the animal and vegetal kingdoms were repurposed for human enjoyment. Cephalopod skins were grafted onto the manufactured creatures, and stimulated electrically so that pigmented cells would expand or contract as commanded, serving as biological pixels to display pictures and videos. Swarms of fabricated insects danced in the sky in evanescent shrouds, painting streaks of light with the glow of their own bodies. Worm-like ribbons were wrapped around Christmas trees, or around columns and lampposts during public holidays, to fill the air with the colors of their photophores, or festive stridulations; artificial syringes and gular sacs modeled after tree frogs and siamangs to produce songs of staggering beauty and complexity, with an organic, animal quality that no mechanical instrument nor human voice could have produced.
Synthetic pets came into demand, offering more flattery of human biophilic instincts in lieu of the cleanliness and efficiency of pet robots. They were built at first in imitation of slugs and shrimps (without unpleasant secretions, and built to withstand the manipulation of impatient children), then of birds and mammals. Soft textures, pleasant sounds and smells, endearing features were agreed upon in bioaesthetic committees, endlessly simulated in virtual ontogenesis, and finally translated into proprietary genetic code and packed into a convenient egg. Clean and sexless they were made for families that would feed them daily with patented formulas; and others were made in less innocent places for less innocent purposes.
Brain-designing teams became accustomed to threading a very fine needle, creating minds that were developed enough to avoid most frustrations of pet-owning, without crossing the threshold that would grant them the same personhood and self-ownership granted in extremis to the last gorillas and elephants. Years of poring over the daedalus of neurons with the resources of industry and its hunger for results uncovered many secrets that would feed the next waves of the vital arts.
The following wonder was of course the return of recently extinct species, the delicate-hued passenger pigeon, the reptile-jawed Tasmanian wolf, the purple-cheeked orangutan. Century-old plans were fulfilled as ruddy herds of mammoths wandered once again the pale tundra, although they had to be relocated to a thawing Antarctica. Much clamor was raised by the announce of restored dinosaurs, which were later revealed to have been manufactured out of modified emus and hoazins. Presumably, when the War came some three decades later, the resurrected orangutans fell for the second time into the chasm of extinction.
In the later phase, mammalian and even human brains were produced, some apparently capable of nervous activity. There were many ways to expose it to the world: in some cases it was translated into a musical codex; in others, the outer cortex was made translucent, and the flow of neurotransmitters could be seen as a warm-colored glow. A Museum of Qualia was briefly opened in a northern city, where one could experience the colors of distant longing, the textures of sexual rapture, the notes of filial love, and the taste of divine inspiration. It became simple, then, to induce the same sensations in natural brains, and make everyone into a poète maudit and a prophet of God.
Most synthetic brains were mercifully awash in endorphins for all their existence. But in one infamous case, a particularly mad artist had their farmed brain glow with neuronal activity in ways consistent with excruciating pain. The debates were fierce, on questions both of fact and moral, and after a few months the damned creature, if such it was, was disconnected from support and incinerated. Its luckier brethren followed it soon. The natural-born brains that had been stored and preserved in view of a future reanimation, which for the time trauma or decay had made impossible, were kept in storage as long as dutiful heirs or charitable organizations funded it, and not one minute longer.
This one scandal marked the zenith of popularity of the vital art, and from there it swiftly withdrew from public exaltation into the pockets of practicality -- food production, medicine, waste treatment -- where it could not be abandoned, and where people had long accepted it as normal and natural. People would still dine on vat-grown meat -- who but a savage would prefer another kind? -- and saved their loved ones from death with any necessary mean. But year after year, the breathing infrastructures were quietly dismantled or fell into disrepair, and the synthetic companions lost much of their appeal.
Many countries of the world banned the applications of the art that were not essential, and some of those that were. Quickly the wealth of volumes written on the manipulation of life became little more than a catalogue of past curiosities, a glimpse into the alien thoughts and values that so recently were the rule.
In the last few years before the War, new developments of the vital art only occurred in secret, in the laboratories of tyrants and revolutionaries, meant not for unscrupulous creation, but for exceedingly scrupulous destruction.

I always really liked, in Death Note, that when they introduces M and N as L's two competing protégée, they just took a list of L's traits and quirks and split them down the middle: L was both logical and intuitive, passionate about justice and personally enraptured by solving puzzles, sat like a child, played with his food, and had an insatiable sweet tooth? Mellow gets the passion, the justice bordering on vengeance, the intuition, and the sweet tooth. Near gets the childlike demeanor, the play habits, the cold logic, and personal investment in puzzles for puzzles sake. And together they make one functional L.

I want that for the Batfam. Bruce has his giant obnoxious hyper competent repertoire, but instead of every Batkid being just a mini version of Bruce, give them each a SUPER distinct specialty. Something actually discernably different from their peers, rather than just slapping the same onesize fit all batbrand competency on all of them. The martial arts expert, the ace parkour/acrobat, the detective, the gadgeteer, the batcomputer data analyst, the criminal profiler, the vigilante, the master of disguise, the urban legend, the avenger, the ninja/assassin, etc... Obviously theyre each well rounded and versed in all these archetypes, but each one ought to have a specialized category where if it ever really came down to its, they could beat Bruce in a contest of that one set of skills. (Except Damian. Damian should just be a tiny Bruce with maybe a bit of an ethics problem, and the promise of being better than Bruce at EVERYTHING, just given a bit of time to grow into it while Bruce loses a bit of edge to old age)
(and frankly i really just want this for a bunch of hero families -the WWfam could have different fields of specialty from diplomacy to archeology and magic artifacts, to mythological beast tamer, to proper soldier and commander, etc...; the Flashfam could have radically different approaches to what elements of how they approach processing at superhuman speed and their atomic level of finite control; the Arrowfam could have a whole spread of survivalist vs hunter/tracker vs sport archer vs esoteric historical martial arts, etc skills to set one another apart.- but that's several whole other cans of worms...)

Dick is far and apart the best in the air, fastest maneuvering both around obstacles and on the run, in and out of the fray, sheer 0 to 60 from ground to air on a grappling line, fastest all around reaction time, and contender for most well honed raw athleticism right next to Cass.
Babs has the information network, the batcomputer sciences, and organizational and tactical perspective that comes uniquely from not just being a bat kid but from being so closely acquainted with GCPD's structures and systems. When it comes to cross referencing and pinpointing precise information, Babs is unmatched by a substantial margin.
Jason has the I Am Vengeance, I Am The Night down. The raw passion for crime fighting, and indeed the fixation on crime specifically. He and Steph are the most personally acquainted and invested in Gotham's underworld and the actual humans working, living, struggling and thriving in it.
Ill be honest I m actually never quite sure where the hell either Helena fits into this structure... Bertinelli feels like she should fit a niche almost too similar to Jason's, but lacking in the fanfavorite melodrama of being a dead robin. And Wayne ought rightly to fit a role not dissimilar to Damian or just Bruce himself... Consider this one unresolved...
Tim is of course is everyones favorite ace boy detective. I feel like theres always a temptation to make him Babs' equal in the tech department but outside of the laughable 90s hackerkid aesthetic I just dont see it. He's great at trivia and detective's intuition, and of course his near shamanic level of insight into Gotham itself.... He does strike me as one of the family's top gadgeteers; not a full blown engineer like Luke, but quick to pick up and make unconventional use of existing tech and hardware, matched and even surpassed in that respect only by...
Steph, who as Cluemaster's kid and one time potential protégée has had a thorough talent for tinkering and sabotage from and early age. Maybe she cant tap into the same depth of trivia or strictest logical deductions that some of the more thorough bred bats can, but no one can pinpoint the most vital areas, or dismantle a deathtrap more quickly than Steph, both by way of knowing the mechanics, but also by way of intimating a super villain's psychology and behavior. Where someone like Tim or even Bruce might fixate on knowing the exact layout or schematics or logistics of a hideout, a machine, or a plan before taking action to dismantle it, Steph knows at a glance where the most volatile parts of a machine or a plan are so that even if she doesn't have the time or the specific knowledge to work out every detail of what it does and how, she can figure out how to break a mechanism or topple a plan at its most central pillar(s) of support. I've always wanted her to be essentially the family's espionage expert, right next to Catwoman's breaking and entering expertise.(Ric Grayson eat your dman heartout)
Then there's Cass, and obviously, at her peak she's the family's (and frankly the world's) top martial artist. But even with her first language of combat fluency stripped down/away she's more than a match for anyone else in the family.
Luke kind of predictably taking his dads role as engineer, utilizing the full extent of the high end bat arsenal unlike really anyone else. People joke about comparing batman and Ironman but really if anyone should have a shtick comparable to Ironman it's Batwing. The rest of the bat fam can operate and maybe maintain the vehicles and hardware fine, but no one can design, upgrade, and see through the actual fabrication process of the tech better than Luke...
...Runner up in this same category is Harper, who is lacking in the straight up manufacturing department but built her whole vigilante arsenal by juryrigging salvaged battech.
Ill be honest, a bit like Huntress, I dont fully known what to make of Kate. Her background is unique among the batfamily as having been strictly military. She has a penchant for the noirsy side of the detective shtick, but thats more of a genre thing than a skill set; what does it really mean for her shtick inworld? I dont really have an answer...
Duke is a bit of a weird case in that the obvious answers are all baked right into his existing profile: he's the meta, he works in the light, he's supposedly more above board and less broody. And that all feels fine, but it also feels like he doesn't actually fit into the whole schema of batskills at all as a result. I would like to see him use his experience with We Are Robin to create a kind of PR or outreach branch of the bat fam. Like, a bat that Gotham can actually sort of get to know and learn to trust, beyond believing in a boogeyman or not. Like, i dunno, give him some airtime with Vicky Vale or Jack Ryder...
And I already mention Damian is just small Bruce waiting to grow into his dad's shoes. The whole benefit of being ras' heir is that he's the one kid who doesnt need Batman to train him. He can fight and think and ostensibly even gadget without Bruce, what Bruce gives him is what Ras and Talia cant: A moral compass. Plus it's a fun change of pace for Bruce to have a protégé where he isn't filling the time with teaching combat and shit to, so that he really has no choice but to learn to connect with Damian emotionally, for both Damian's sake and his own.
I'm not touching Gotham Girl with a 20ft pole...
Did I forget anyone??
People like Owlman, and Ghostmaker are all just the same shtick... Bruce's same character build stats but without the ethics. The Talons are cool but skillswise still just sort of amount to Nightwing knockoffs, ala the whole Owlman origins of the Court of Owls plot in the first place. Similarly the Batman Inc crew are just discount batmen; same basic skill tree but lower point values, so to speak. Not really worth investigating. (unrelated but has Catman fought Green Arrow before? I feel like they could have a really cool survivalist rivalry thing going on)
Not counting people like Clown hunter, or Harley, or Scarlet, or Raptor as parts of the family...
OH! Jace! Boy what a weird case. I wish we got more of an actual motive from him. It honestly doesn't feel like he has a particularly good reason to even be a vigilante, least of all a direct successor to Batman of all things. And I wish they hadn't just shipped him off to NYC... Other than that his shtick feels super weird in the scope of the general bat repertoire. Like Kate, it's weird that his background is really just (para)military rather than the more eclectic spread that Bruce has made the standard bat regimen.
