March Book Reviews: Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson

Picked this one up on hoopla since I've heard a bit about the author around. Magic user Mio is coerced by his mafia mother into extracting secrets from victims so she can control them. After a mission goes wrong, Mio flees to a house which turns out to be the home of an extremely cursed undead werebear and his household (also cursed). As Mio himself becomes entangled in the curse, he must work to fix it before it gets them all.

This book had a bewildering array of worldbuilding. There's the love interest, who is dead but also a ghost and also a bear. There's Mio's mafia mother, who has a red glowing eye and controls minds. Not to mention Mio's gift of controlling people with song, a mysterious war that's hardly mentioned, and an extremely complex and lightly explained curse. I don't mind a bit of complication, and in fact I prefer it over the shoddy stage scenery sort of worldbuilding. But I think the worldbuilding here wasn't explained clearly enough for multiple plot twists to be supported by it. With plot twists, you're supposed to think "AHA I should have known all along," not "what just happened??"

A solid romance plotline and very original setting, but muddled execution.

I wanted to highlight some books written by colleagues of mine who are also queer authors of queer stories.

May Peterson is a trans woman and my former editor. She's an extremely talented writer who routinely puts me to shame (affectionate). Lord of the Last Heartbeat is a stunning MLM fantasy, and a first-in-series.

Don't Feed the Trolls by Erica Kudisch is a contemporary novel about being trans on the Internet, specifically in gaming circles. It's beautiful and heart-wrenching and has a satisfying ending.

March Book Reviews: The Immortal City by May Peterson

Book two of three, but not connected to the other two at all, so you could easily start here. Ari is a dove spirit, a person who died and then came back to life with powers. He lives in the immortal city of Serenity in thrall to its mafia-esque leader, and his life is in stasis because he's lost the memories of his former life and has no purpose or direction. When Ari encounters a strange mortal, Hei sends his life into turmoil and drives him to seek out answers about his past with a new urgency.

This is a very odd book. The worldbuilding here is just as chaotic and prone to throwing in new facts without warning as the first book, but I was more familiar with some of it this time around. The setting in this book has a sort of austerity that I'm not sure appeals to me-- the characters are limited to the city, which only has a bare handful of important characters and a relatively simple dynamic (run by the mafia). Interesting and novel, but not quite to my taste.
